Economy seating

Design how you want to fly with our range of seating options.

Whether you want to assign the seats you prefer or grab some extra inches to stretch out in with our Economy Delight and exit row options, you can tailor your flight as much or as little as you like in Economy. Take a look at our seat maps for each aircraft to get an idea of which seating options are best for you.

Choosing your seat

Economy light , 1 of 6.

You can choose your seat for free within 24 hours of departure, by using online check in .

However, if you'd like to choose your seats in advance, you can do this online from 331 days before your flight for a fee*. To select your seats, you'll need to log in to My booking.

* The cost to assign a seat starts from £30 per person per flight (£60 per round trip) on Virgin Atlantic long haul flights. Terms and conditions apply .

Economy Classic , 2 of 6

If you're travelling in Economy Classic you can choose your seats for free at any time.

But if you'd like a little more room then you can purchase an exit row seat from only £50/$70 one way. You can relax in a sumptuous amount of room as there is no seat directly in front of you. And if you're a Flying Club Gold member, you can choose an exit row seat for yourself, free of charge.

Just so you know...

There may be a bit more bustle around you as the exit rows are often near to the galleys and/or toilets, but you will have masses of extra space to stretch out in.

To sit in our exit row seats, there are a few things you need to be aware of:

  • The passenger must be at least 16 years old on the day of travel, and they cannot be travelling with infants.
  • They must also be fit and able bodied as in an emergency situation they will need to be able to open the exit door unaided.

On some aircraft the additional legroom in the exit window seat can be less when compared to those adjacent, however all exit seats offer additional legroom when compared to our standard Economy Classic seating.

You can book exit row seats by logging in to My booking. You can also book at the airport*, ask for availability when you check in. However, early booking is strongly recommended, especially on longer flights as the seats are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

*Prices at the airport may vary from choosing the seats online in advance. Terms and conditions apply

Economy Delight , 3 of 6

If you're travelling in Economy Delight you can choose your seats for free at any time.

Our 31" seats are designed to be more than comfortable, but an extra three inches of space in our Economy Delight seat will make your trip feel even more luxurious. It can also be useful if you're travelling with small children, giving them a bit of wiggle room.

You can choose your Economy Delight seat for free at any time by logging in to My booking.

Flying Club members , 4 of 6

Red members : You'll get free seat assignment for Economy Classic or Delight as part of your ticket. For Economy Light, the standard seating charges will apply.

Silver members : Will be entitled to any time free seat assignment in Economy Light for Silver Flying Club members only. If you’re travelling in a group, any non Silver or Gold members will need to pay the standard fees for Economy Light seat assignment.

Gold members : Will be entitled to any time free seat assignment in Economy Light for their whole booking party. Gold members will also be entitled to free exit row seat assignment when they are travelling on an Economy Classic ticket for the member only.*

You'll be able to choose your seats for your flights in My booking.

*Subject to availability.

Travelling in a group , 5 of 6

We’ll always try and seat families with children under 12 years old together. If we can't seat all your family together, we'll make sure each child under 12 years old is seated with an adult from your group. However if you want to make sure all your family are sitting together in your preferred choice of seats, we would recommend choosing Economy Classic, where you can choose your seats for free at point of booking or any time after.

With Economy Light, as your seat is allocated at check in, your options to sit with companions (including family and groups), may be limited.

We do also have an interactive chat service onboard, so if you'd rather have your own space during your flight, you’ll still be able to stay in touch.

Please note: We'll always do our best to grant your seating wishes to make your Virgin Atlantic experience as enjoyable as possible (although we do need to make sure they are in line with any applicable regulatory requirements). Unfortunately, seat numbers can’t be guaranteed due to operational, safety or security requirements.

Special requirements , 6 of 6

If you require any special assistance or would like to learn more about additional support we can offer onboard, take a look at our dedicated page for lots more information.

Stretch out and relax in our luxurious leather seats. With 38 fabulous inches of pitchroom, you’re sure to be travelling in comfort. You’ll also be able to select your seat from 331 days before your flight, for free.

Upper Class

When it comes to making your flight just perfect, we reckon we've thought of everything. Plus, you can choose your seat as soon as you book, totally free of charge. Prepare to be spoilt rotten.

Virgin Atlantic Route Map

Flying Club is Virgin Atlantic’s loyalty program that rewards members with points when they fly with Virgin Atlantic and on other partner airlines including Delta, Air France-KLM, and Singapore Airlines.

These Virgin points can be redeemed for award flights or used to pay for part of a flight (starting from 3,000 points). As well as flying, there are a variety of ways to earn Virgin points, from spending on the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard ® to shopping at specific retails through the Virgin Atlantic retail portal.

When you fly, you earn tier points that can help you move up the Flying Club’s membership tier statuses of Red, Silver, and Gold — the Red tier being the lowest tier and Gold being the highest with each tier offering its own benefits.

There are great incentives to achieving Gold tier with Gold members not only earning a bonus on flights, but also receiving priority for check-in, access to the Virgin Clubhouses, and an extra luggage allowance.

Better yet, as of September 1, 2020, Flying Club members will earn elite-qualifying Tier Points on all bookings with Virgin Atlantic – including award tickets!

You’ll earn Tier Points based on the fare class of your ticket. But award tickets will earn tier points at 50% of the rate of cash tickets. All one-way Upper Class redemptions will earn 100 Tier Points, Premium one-way redemptions will earn 50 Tier Points, and economy one-way redemptions will earn 25 Tier Points.

Hot Tip: Read more about Virgin Atlantic’s loyalty program in our article about the best ways to earn lots of Virgin Points and you’ll be jetting off on a reward flight soon!

Virgin Atlantic Customer Satisfaction

Virgin Atlantic has its fair share of devoted customers that won’t fly any other airline when possible.

Well known for its friendly service both in the air and on the ground, Virgin Atlantic seems to have a real emphasis on hiring the right people to do the job well and with a smile on their face.

Complaints of delays or cancellations are scarcely reported on the likes of Tripadvisor or Virgin Atlantic’s social media, so it seems to run a tight ship. Although comments regarding price hikes have become more prominent recently, with customers comparing Virgin Atlantic fares to its long-standing rival British Airways .

Since creating an alliance with Delta, Virgin Atlantic has discontinued some of its routes much to customer disappointment. The London to Cape Town, London to Tokyo, and Hong Kong to Sydney routes were lost over the years in favor of more profitable transatlantic routes.

Founder Richard Branson is the face of Virgin Atlantic and his passion and drive to create the world’s sexiest and most exciting airline seems to have paid off through some pretty crazy and daring PR stunts. Customers have stated on social media that flying on Virgin Atlantic means the holiday starts when you step onto the plane rather than when you reach your destination.

Final Thoughts

Virgin Atlantic’s customer service is at the heart of its business, so if you like your coffee served with a smile, Virgin Atlantic  could be the airline for you.

It brings a touch of glamour to air travel, especially if you’re flying in Upper Class with its cabin bar — perfect for mingling with other passengers — or its stylish airport clubhouses.

Virgin Atlantic has been busy refurbishing its premium cabins onboard select A330-200s and will be taking delivery of 12 new A350 aircraft through 2021. Along with improved seating across all cabins, these new aircraft will have larger panoramic windows, improved storage, and quieter engines.

Richard Branson is a prominent voice on climate change, so it’s also great to see an airline that is as concerned about its impact on the planet as well as its profitability.
