Struktur essay

Dalam mempelajari essay, penting diketahui mengenai struktur tulisannya. Essay dikatakan baik dan benar jika mengikuti tiga struktur utama, di antaranya yaitu sebagai berikut. 

1. Pendahuluan 

Pendahuluan merupakan bagian yang akan mengantarkan pembaca pada topik yang akan dibahas. Bagian ini sangat dibutuhkan karena berguna untuk memudahkan pembaca dalam memahami isi essay. 

Pada bagian ini, penulis mengungkapkan topik apa yang diangkat kerta latar belakang mengapa penulis memilih topik tersebut. Biasanya penulis akan menambahkan pendapat mengenai topik tersebut secara umum dan menerangkan penjelasan lebih lanjut dalam bagian selanjutnya. 

2. Pembahasan  

Bagian pembahasan merupakan bagian inti essay. Hal ini karena bagian pembahasan menjelaskan isi essay secara terperinci. Penulis akan menjelaskan sudut pandangnya terhadap topik yang dipilih, beserta analisis dan interpretasi penulis terhadap topik tersebut. 

Penulis akan memaparkan dengan detail opini serta argumennya secara kronologis sehingga membuat essay bersifat koheren. Tidak hanya opini, pada bagian ini penulis juga akan memberikan teori, data, dan fakta untuk meyakinkan pembaca mengenai opini yang sudah dituliskannya dalam essay.

Cara membuat essay

Jika dibandingkan dengan sistem pendidikan negeri lain menurut saya Indonesia masih memiliki banyak kekurangan walaupun ada pula kelebihannya sistem pendidikan Indonesia masih harus direvisi agar meningkatnya sumber daya manusia yang bermanfaat dan berkualitas agar dapat bersaing dengan SDM negeri lain. Selain itu akan terjadi permasalahan saat pindah ke sekolah dengan kurikulum yang berbeda yaitu berubahnya materi yang dipelajari contohnya seorang siswa SMP yang menggunakan kurikulum 2006 pindah ke SMA dengan kurikulum 2013 maka siswa tersebut akan bingung karena beberapa materi tidak pernah dijelaskan saat SMP danakan tertinggal pelajarannya jika ia tidak bisa mengejarnya. Salah satu kelebihan pada pendidikan Indonesia adalah kedisiplinan yang dihasilkan saat sekolah namun tidak semua sekolah di Indonesia menerapkan peraturan dengan tegas sehingga siswa tidak disiplin, karena dengan adanya peraturan di sekolah bisamembangun karakter pada siswa seperti tidak telat, tepat waktu mengerjakan tugas. Jika peraturan ini tidak dilakukan dengan tegas maka akan sulit untuk membangunkarakter siswa.

Permasalahan yang ada pada peserta didik adalah kurangnya minat untuk belajar walaupun tidak sepenuhnya permasalahan ini ada pada peserta didik namun juga guru pengajar. Sehingga untuk meraih pendidikan yang baik dan berkualitas diperlukan kerja sama antar peserta didik dan pengajar. Pengajar harus bisa melakukan pengajaran dengan kreatif dan tidak hanya terpaku pada fakta yang ada di buku tapi juga membuat siswa ikut berpikir pada hal yang berkaitan dengan pelajaran sehingga siswa tidak menjadi siswa yang pasif namun aktif. Saya menyelesaikan studi Sarjana jurusan Sastra Inggris di Universitas Jenderal Soedirman tahun 2013 dengan predikat cum laude, yang menjadi lulusan terbaik universitas.

Selama di kuliah, saya aktif dalam organisasi Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa Penalaran dan Riset (UKMPR) menjabat sebagai Kepala Bidang Kajian Ilmiah. Keaktifan di organisasi ini mengasah kemampuan saya dalam kepemimpinan dan membangun inisiatif-inisiatif dalam mengambil tindakan nyata dalam merespon permasalahan sosial dan pendidikan di tingkat lokal, provinsi, serta nasional.

Satu prestasi yang berhasil saya raih yaitu terpilih sebagai Duta Muda Indonesia untuk Pertukaran Pemuda Indonesia - Kanada (PPIK). Program tersebut menitik-beratkan pada aktivitas kegiatan sukarelawan sekaligus pengembangan masyarakat yang bertujuan untuk mempererat persahabatan antara kedua negara.

Program ini terdiri dari dua fase yaitu Kanada dan Indonesia. Di Kanada, saya bersama duta muda yang lain juga aktif berkontribusi memperkenalkan Indonesia dalam bentuk pentas seni budaya kepada masyarakat kota Amherst, Nova Scotia.

Kami juga membantu beberapa kegiatan yang diadakan masyarakat setempat, seperti mengumpulkan donasi makanan dan acara penggalangan dana bekerja sama dengan Palang Merah Kanada untuk kegiatan amal dan penyaluran bantuan korban gempa Bali dan Lombok pada 2018.

Saat ini hingga akhir tahun nanti, saya menjadi salah satu dari 47 pengajar muda angkatan ke 3 program Indonesia Mengajar. Program itu menempatkan saya selama satu tahun di Dusun Rura, Kabupaten Majene sebagai seorang guru sekolah dasar (SD).

Selama di sana, saya mendorong guru- guru supaya lebih kreatif dalam mengajar dengan berbagi bahan pengajaran yang telah saya dapatkan semasa pelatihan.

Kemudian, untuk meningkatkan kesadaran orang tua agar lebih peduli terhadap pendidikan, saya juga berkolaborasi dengan pemuda pemudi lokal dengan mengadakan perlombaan bulan Ramadhan seperti lomba azan, hafalan surat pendek, hingga lomba ceramah.

Saya dan teman-teman pengajar muda lain juga mendorong perangkat pemerintah setempat untuk membuat kegiatan forum diskusi untuk kepala sekolah tingkat SD se-kabupaten sebagai tempat untuk saling bertukar ide maupun pengalaman.

Apabila saya berkesempatan mendapatkan beasiswa ini, saya ingin mengambil peran sebagai spesialis di bidang pendidikan serta mengembangkan pengajaran berbasis riset.

Saya juga ingin menjadi peneliti dan spesialis, di institusi pemerintah sehingga bisa menjadi bagian dalam merumuskan kebijakan pendidikan di Indonesia serta menyelesaikan isu-isu, hingga masalah yang terjadi di bidang pendidikan.

Membahas sukses berarti bicara ukuran. Sebuah ukuran yang akan digunakan untuk mengukur sukses itu sudah tercapai atau belum. Ukuran ini akan berbeda-beda tiap orangnya. Seorang karyawan mungkin mematok ukuran suksesnya melalui pencapaian karir.

Seorang mahasiswa mungkin menentukan ukuran suksesnya dengan perolehan IPK-nya. Seorang pengusaha merasa sukses ketika omzet penjualannya mencapai angka tertentu, dan lain-lain.

Dengan demikian, sukses itu bisa dibilang subjektif. Lain orang, lain pula ukurannya. Bagi saya, sukses dalam hidup itu bersifat diskrit, yakni terdiri dari elemen-elemen berbeda dan kadang tidak berhubungan.

Dengan demikian, seseorang sebenarnya telah, sedang, dan akan terus mengalami banyak kesuksesan dalam hidupnya. Tinggal bagaimana persepsi seseorang, dalam menilai setiap peristiwa dalam hidupnya, apakah dinilai sebagai sebuah kesuksesan atau sebaliknya.

Masalahnya, sering kali ukuran sukses itu adalah sesuatu yang terlalu mainstream. Harta, jabatan, karir, dan status sosial seringnya menjadi ukuran utama kesuksesan seseorang.

Padahal, seseorang bisa saja membuat ukuran sukses yang sederhana. Contohnya bagi mahasiswa, tidak menyontek dalam ujian adalah kesuksesan. Bagi seorang karyawan, mampu menyelesaikan setiap tugasnya dengan baik juga merupakan kesuksesan.

Jika dalam kehidupan seseorang itu berisi kesuksesan-kesuksesan sederhana yang berbeda-beda. Maka, pertanyaan tentang "sukses terbesar dalam kehidupan" akan menjadi pertanyaan yang cukup menantang. Mana yang menjadi sukses terbesar? Tidak menyontek saat ujian kah? Memiliki karir yang baguskah? Atau yang mana? Lagi-lagi suatu hal yang subjektif.

Saya teringat dengan sabda Nabi Muhammad SAW yang mengatakan, "Sebaik-baik manusia adalah yang bermanfaat bagi orang lain". Kalimat ringkas serta indah itu menginspirasi saya dalam menentukan mana yang menjadi kesuksesan terbesar dalam hidup.

Bagi saya, sukses terbesar yaitu ketika saya bisa bermanfaat bagi orang lain. Terdengar klise memang, tetapi tidak jika dipahami lebih dalam. Bagi saya, ukuran sukses yang cenderung mainstream tidaklah masalah. Tapi, semata-mata menjadi sukses dengan ukuran mainstream saja rasanya ada yang kurang. Ibarat sayur kurang garam, kurang sedap dirasa.

Oleh sebab itu, menambahkan bumbu "bermanfaat bagi orang lain" akan menambah sedap kesuksesan tersebut. Menjadikan asas kebermanfaatan bagi orang lain sebagai pondasi kesuksesan akan menambah kokoh kesuksesan itu sendiri. Sebaliknya, menafikannya akan membuat bangunan kesuksesan itu berpotensi runtuh sewaktu-waktu. Saya merasakan betul hal ini ketika berstatus sebagai mahasiswa.

Menjadi mahasiswa, apalagi di jurusan dan perguruan tinggi negeri yang bisa dibilang favorit, merupakan sebuah kesuksesan tersendiri bagi saya. Hal ini ditambah kenyataan bahwa kesempatan untuk berkuliah adalah sesuatu yang agak langka bagi sebagian orang di negeri ini.

Pada saat itulah, nilai sesungguhnya dari kesuksesan itu diuji. Seberapa bermanfaatkah saya ketika menjadi mahasiswa? Apalagi, menjadi mahasiswa adalah momentum yang sangat tepat dalam melatih diri untuk menjadi bermanfaat bagi sesama.

Selanjutnya, bagian terpenting dari sebuah kesuksesan yang bermanfaat, menurut saya, adalah usaha seseorang dalam menjadikan kesuksesan itu bermanfaat, bukan hasilnya. Dalam hal ini, seberapa terasa manfaat dari sebuah kesuksesan bagi sesama itu penting, namun usaha dan proses menuju ke arah itu justru lebih penting.

Sebagaimana petuah yang sering disampaikan, "yang penting itu prosesnya, bukan hasilnya", maka begitu pula berlaku dalam hal ini. Dengan demikian, sejauh mana usaha saya untuk menjadikan kesuksesan yang telah diraih bisa dinikmati pula oleh sesama merupakan bagian yang saya anggap paling penting. Adapun masalah hasil dari usaha itu, biarlah orang lain yang menilai.

Menyadari hal ini, saya termotivasi untuk selalu berbuat yang terbaik tanpa sibuk memikirkan hasilnya. Saya tidak mengatakan bahwa hasil itu tidaklah penting.

Hasil itu penting, karena hal itulah yang biasanya kasat mata dan bisa dinikmati oleh orang lain. Akan tetapi, saya berkeyakinan bahwa hasil terbaik akan lahir dari usaha yang terbaik pula. Dengan melakukan yang terbaik, maka hasil yang terbaik tinggal masalah waktu.

Oleh karena itu, lakukanlah yang terbaik dalam upaya menjadikan kesuksesan kita bermanfaat bagi sesama, maka manfaat terbaik dari kesuksesan kita itu akan benar-benar bisa dirasakan oleh sesama.

Sebagai penutup tulisan singkat ini, saya mengajukan sebuah definisi tentang sukses. Menurut saya, sukses adalah ketika Anda bisa bermanfaat bagi orang lain. Kata "ketika" yang merupakan preposisi waktu, menandakan bahwa sukses bisa terjadi kapan saja, tidak ada batasan waktu tertentu.

Satu-satunya yang menjadi tolok ukur adalah "bermanfaat bagi orang lain". Jadi, setiap kali kamu bisa bermanfaat bagi orang lain, setiap kali itu pula kamu telah sukses. Demikianlah, kalimat ringkas tersebut selain mampu mendefinisikan kata "sukses" itu sendiri, sekaligus mampu menjawab pertanyaan: apakah yang menjadi sukses terbesar dalam hidupmu?

Membangun Sinergi untuk Mewujudkan Kehidupan Sehat Mental

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) menjadi salah satu tujuan yang ingin dicapai bersama di tahun 2030 oleh berbagai macam negara di dunia. Konsep SDGs yang berisi 17 tujuan dan 169 target berlaku untuk 15 tahun dihitung dari 2016-2030, untuk semua negara tanpa terkecuali.

Kesehatan menjadi salah satu aspek yang menjadi fokus perhatian konsep SDGs ini.Tema "Mengubah Dunia Kita: Agenda 2030 untuk Pembangunan Berkelanjutan", tujuan ke 3 SDGs menyebutkan bahwa tujuan yang ingin dicapai yaitu kehidupan yang sehat pada semua usia.

Harapannya, di tahun 2030 mendatang permasalahan mengenai kesehatan dapat diatasi secara adil dan merata. Kehidupan yang sehat mulai dari kesehatan fisik juga mental. Kesehatan mental tentu sama pentingnya dengan kesehatan fisik, keduanya perlu diperhatikan secara serius.

Sering kita dengar "Men Sana In Corpore Sano" jika diterjemahkan adalah dalam tubuh yang sehat terdapat jiwa yang sehat. Tubuh dapat dikatakan sehat apabila mental dan fisiknya sehat. Fisik yang sehat adalah ketika fungsi anggota tubuh berfungsi dengan baik dan dalam keadaan normal.

Sementara, kesehatan mental yang baik yaitu ketika kondisi batin berada dalam keadaan tenteram dan tenang, sehingga memungkinkan untuk menikmati kehidupan sehari-hari.

Apabila kesehatan mental seseorang terganggu, ia akan mengalami gangguan suasana hati, kemampuan berpikir, serta kendali emosi yang dapat mengarah pada perilaku buruk. Sekarang ini kondisi kesehatan mental tak lagi bisa dianggap remeh.

Pada Senin, 9 September 2019 tepatnya satu hari sebelum Hari Pencegahan Bunuh Diri Sedunia, WHO menerbitkan laporan terbaru bahwa setiap 40 detik ada satu orang di dunia meninggal karena bunuh diri. Kematian yang disebabkan karena bunuh diri meningkat di seluruh dunia.

Di Indonesia, diketahui data bahwa bunuh diri menjadi penyebab utama kedua pada usia produktif 15-29 tahun. Meski demikian, perilaku bunuh diri tidak hanya muncul pada kelompok remaja maupun orang yang berusia muda, namun dapat terjadi pada semua kelompok usia.

Fakta ini membuktikan bahwa kesehatan mental masih jauh dari kata sehat. Setiap orang harus menyadari kondisi kesehatan mental dirinya masing masing. Karena kondisi mental seseorang akan mempengaruhi bagaimana ia menjalani kehidupannya.

Keputusasaan, tidak percaya bisa melakukan suatu hal menandakan orang tersebut mental nya sedang tidak baik, keadaan ini bisa berpengaruh ke aspek lain seperti pendidikan, sosial. Hal ini berhubungan dengan keberlangsungan tujuan SDGs lainnya.

Jika sumberdaya manusia mengalami masalah ini. Berbeda dengan orang yang sehat mental, memiliki semangat untuk selalu bergerak menuju perubahan yang lebih baik.

Saat ini penanganan masalah terkait kesehatan mental masih terpinggirkan, khususnya Indonesia, data sejalan dengan data profil kesehatan Indonesia 2017 dari Kementerian Kesehatan, jumlah tenaga psikologi yang sangat minim hanya 1400 jika dibandingkan dengan jumlah tenaga medis sebanyak 1.143.494 jiwa.

Jumlah tenaga medis yang mencapai angka satu juta itu saja masih dianggap minim jika dibandingkan dengan jumlah penduduk Indonesia secara keseluruhan, apalagi jumlah tenaga psikologi.

Di sisi lain, mental illness masih dianggap suatu hal yang tabu oleh masyarakat. penderita gangguan kesehatan mental dianggap sebagai orang yang kurang ibadah, tidak ingat Tuhan.

Label yang diciptakan masyarakat ini membuat kebanyakan orang yang mengidap gangguan kesehatan mental tidak berani menunjukkan bahwa dirinya sedang tidak baik baik saja. Mereka enggan menceritakan tentang masalah psikologis nya ke orang orang sekitarnya. Selain itu, biaya ke psikolog yang tergolong tidak murah membuat mereka yang sedang sakit mental semakin menutup masalah nya sendiri.

Penanganan masalah ini memerlukan partisipasi dari semua pihak, negara, masyarakat dan penderita. Ketika ketiga elemen ini bersinergi penurunan angka kematian karena bunuh diri sangat mungkin terjadi.

Pemerintah sebagai penyedia fasilitas, masyarakat mendukung pentingnya kesehatan mental sehingga timbul rasa peduli dan tidak ada lagi judgmental (penilaian) yang meresahkan dan penderita itu sendiri yang memiliki kesadaran tinggi untuk menjaga kesehatan mental nya.

Negara sangat berperan dalam penyediaan fasilitas untuk penyembuhan seperti meningkatkan jumlah tenaga psikologi yang berkualitas, menciptakan program program sosialisasi mengenai kesehatan mental yang bertujuan mematahkan stigma buruk mengenai kesehatan mental yang ada di masyarakat.

Program bisa berupa pendekatan ke sekolah, tempat kerja dan tiap desa. Memberikan pelatihan kepada guru Bimbingan Konseling karena di lapangan, ketika siswa dipanggil oleh guru BK pasti dianggap siswa tersebut bermasalah. Guru BK belum dianggap sebagai tempat berkeluh kesah oleh siswa.

Pelatihan kepada guru BK ini bertujuan supaya guru BK di tiap sekolah bisa membuat program sesuai karakter siswa nya disana. Program yang dibuat bisa mendekatkan siswa dan guru BK di sekolah tersebut. Untuk sasaran masyarakat di desa, khususnya para orang tua bisa diberikan program pengenalan mengenai kesehatan mental.

Program yang dibuat bertujuan supaya para orang tua mengenali bagaimana menjaga kesehatan mental untuk diri nya sendiri dan dikenalkan masalah mengenai gangguan kesehatan mental yang bisa terjadi kepada anak.

Selain itu juga bisa diadakan pemeriksaan mental ke setiap rumah oleh tenaga psikologi sehingga harapannya masyarakat mendapat solusi atas masalahnya.

Masyarakat berperan penting dalam mendukung orang orang di sekitarnya. Sekarang ini banyak yang belum paham mengenai pentingnya kesehatan mental. Banyak nya penilaian buruk kepada penderita datang dari masyarakat sekitar.

Dengan adanya program pemerintah yang sudah dijabarkan akan menyadarkan masyarakat sehingga penilaian buruk yang sering dilontarkan akan berkurang. Lebih bagus lagi ketika mereka bisa menjadi orang orang yang mendukung penderita.

Sekarang ini mulai semarak komunitas komunitas yang mendukung dan memberikan semangat untuk para penderita gangguan mental. Sudah ada kepedulian seperti membuat konseling secara online. Mereka memanfaatkan media sosial untuk menyuarakan pentingnya mental health.

Tidak kalah penting bagi penderita gangguan kesehatan mental untuk mencari pertolongan di sekitar, serta mau belajar untuk mencintai diri sendiri, belajar menyadari pentingnya kesehatan mental.

Bukan hanya karena masalah terganggunya keindahan tempat tinggal yang kita diami, atau seringnya sampah menyumbat saluran air, melainkan kerapnya berbagai macam penyakit menyerang manusia yang diakibatkan dari lemahnya penanganan sampah itu sendiri.

Sampah selama ini sering menjadi sosok menakutkan atau bahkan bisa dikatakan musuh bagi kelangsungan hidup manusia. Karena itu sampah ingin dijauhkan, sejauh mungkin dari kehidupan kita. Padahal yang menciptakan sampah itu sendiri adalah manusia. Namun, kenyataannya memang seperti itu. Hasil dari proses kehidupan manusia menghasilkan apa yang dinamakan dengan sampah.

Jadi, dapat ditarik sebuah kesimpulan bahwa sampah merupakan bagian yang tak dapat dipisahkan dari kehidupan manusia. Masalahnya adalah manusia kerap dibuat kebingungan mengatasi sampah yang semakin menumpuk, ditambah lagi terbatasnya lahan tempat pembuangan sampah di tempat mereka tinggal.

Sekarang ini telah banyak teknologi untuk mengelola bahkan memusnahkan sampah. Namun, sudah tidak jamannya lagi sampah dimusnahkan atau dijauhkan dari kehidupan manusia. Sampah dapat kita sulap menjadi sesuatu yang bernilai ekonomis dan bernilai estetis. Salah satunya adalah dengan adanya "Bank Sampah".

Saat ini, pengelolaan sampah di SMP Muslimin masih menjadi masalah utama yang harus ditangani. Maka sebuah penelitian saya lakukan untuk menguji cobakan pemanfaatan sampah menjadi sebuah bentuk kerajinan dan apakah BANK Sampah yang telah ada mampu mengatasi sampah di SMP Muslimin Cililin?

Jenis-jenis Sampah

Sampah terbagi menjadi beberapa jenis, di antaranya:

1. Sampah Organik

Sampah organik adalah sampah yang dapat diurai dan juga sampah yang dapat membusuk secara alami. Sampah ini termasuk jenis sampah basah yang dapat diolah menjadi pupuk kompos. Contoh sampah organik adalah sisa makanan, sayuran, dedaunan dan sebagainya.

Sampah jenis ini dapat terurai secara alami. Melalui berbagai proses penguraian kemudian akan kembali menyatu dengan tanah. Namun jika diolah menjadi kompos maka akan lebih berguna.

2. Sampah Anorganik

Sampah ini berbeda dengan sampah organik. Sampah ini adalah sampah yang tidak dapat terurai dengan cepat, diperlukan waktu beribu-ribu tahun agar sampah jenis ini bisa terurai. Bahan jenis ini terbuat dari bahan kering seperti plastik, besi, karet dan sebagainya.

Sampah jenis ini dapat diolah menjadi barang yang dapat digunakan kembali. Bahkan, jika dikelola atau dengan cara daur ulang akan memberi keuntungan secara materil pada pengelolanya. Adapun barang hasil dari daur ulang sampah anorganik seperti alat-alat rumah tangga, hiasan dinding, dan berbagai macam kerajinan lainnya.

3. Sampah Berbahaya

Sampah berbahaya adalah sampah yang beracun atau limbah dari bahan-bahan berbahaya seperti limbah rumah sakit, limbah pabrik dan lain-lain.

Manfaat Sampah:

Dalam merubah sampah supaya bisa bermanfaat, diperlukan cara untuk mengelolanya dengan baik. cara-cara yang bisa dilakukan adalah sebagai berikut.

1. Mengurangi (Reduce)

Cara ini adalah meminimalisir barang-barang yang kita gunakan, agar sampah yang kita hasilkan juga berkurang. Contohnya meminimalisir penggunaan kantong plastik untuk membawa barang belanjaan.

2. Menggunakan kembali (Reuse)

Salah satu cara dalam meminimalkan sampah yaitu memilih barang-barang yang sekiranya dapat atau masih bisa digunakan kembali.

3. Mendaur Ulang (Recycle)

Untuk meminimalkan sampah, maka gunakanlah barang-barang yang dapat didaur ulang. Misalkan plastik-plastik bekas dapat kita daur menjadi hiasan, vas bunga, dan kerajinan lainnya.

4. Mengganti (Replace)

Untuk meminimalkan sampah maka kita harus mengganti barang-barang yang tidak ramah lingkungan atau hanya sekali pakai menjadi barang-barang yang lebih tahan lama dan juga ramah lingkungan.

Program Bank Sampah

Untuk dapat memanfaatkan sampah sesuai dengan tujuan yang ingin dicapai, tentunya kita harus mengumpulkan sampah terlebih dahulu. Setelah terkumpul kita pilah berbagai jenis sampah tersebut ke dalam jenisnya. Untuk itu diperlukan sebuah program yang mampu melakukan hal tersebut. Salah satunya adalah Program Bank Sampah.

Bank Sampah adalah sebuah program yang mampu mengumpulkan sampah dan mampu memberi keuntungan secara materil dari kedua belah pihak, baik dari pihak penyetor maupun pengelola itu sendiri.

Di SMP Muslimin, Bank Sampah dikelola oleh OSIS. Di sana, setiap kelas yang menyetorkan sampahnya dihitung per kilo berdasarkan jenisnya dan ditukar dengan nilai rupiah yang nantinya dijadikan uang kas.

Adanya semua jenis sampah terkumpul di Bank Sampah, maka mudah untuk memilih sampah mana yang akan dimanfaatkan sesuai dengan tujuan. Kita pilih sampah mana yang akan dijadikan sebagai bahan dasar dari kerajinan yang akan kita buat.

Pada penelitian ini, akan saya jelaskan memanfaatkan sampah bekas minuman sachet menjadi sebuah kerajinan taplak meja.

A. Alat dan Bahan

- Gunting - Kemasan bekas minuman sachet

B. Cara membuat

• Kemasan dilap dengan kain basah lalu keringkan. Kemudian, potong kemasan dengan ukuran lebar 5,1 cm dan panjang 6,8 cm (hanya menggunting bagian bawah dan atas kemasan)
• Siapkan kemasan dengan gambar yang sama sejumlah 200 lembar untuk ukuran taplak meja sedang. Lalu, bersihkan dan gunting dengan ukuran yang sama
• Jika sudah, lipatlah kemasan tersebut dengan lebar 1,7 cm atau sisi 5,1 cm tadi dilipat sebanyak tiga lipatan sehingga bahan akan menjadi ukuran 1,7 cm dan panjang 6,8 cm.
• Langkah awal, siapkan empat bahan yang sudah dilipat tadi, kemudian dikaitkan satu sama lain sehingga mengikat.
• Setelah ke empat bahan tadi mengikat tambahkan bahan yang sama di tiap sisinya, mengikat kembali.
• Sambungkan terus bahan dari tiap sisinya dan bentuklah sesuai keinginan.

Itulah salah satu kerajinan dengan menggunakan bahan dasar sampah anorganik yang telah dibuat di SMP Muslimin Cililin.

Kesimpulan dari esai ini yaitu sampah bukan lagi barang yang harus kita jauhkan dan kita buang begitu saja. Sampah dapat kita olah dengan baik sehingga menjadi barang yang memberi manfaat bagi kita, baik yang bernilai seni ataupun bernilai materi.

Perkembangan zaman merupakan salah satu fenomena yang tidak terelakkan. Hal ini sangat terlihat semenjak adanya Renaissance (abad pencerahan) di Eropa. Mulai dari abad pencerahan inilah perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan khususnya teknologi tidak terelakan.

Hampir setiap detiknya teknologi di bumi ini selalu mengalami perkembangan yang cukup signifikan. Tentunya hal tersebut tidak terlepas dari adanya peran para tokoh-tokoh peneliti dunia itu sendiri.

Renaissance atau lebih kita kenal abad pencerahan di Eropa ini berawal dari abad ke-14 ketika adanya perkembangan IPTEK. Semenjak adanya perkembangan IPTEK inilah, berbagai perkembangan teknologi tidak terelakan. Seperti yang dirasakan pada revolusi 4.0 saat ini.

Inti dari adanya revolusi 4.0 adalah adanya pengembangan teknologi digital. Hal inilah yang menyebabkan adanya kemunculan dampak dari revolusi 4.0 yang menyebabkan beberapa industri besar dan ternama gulung tikar, misalnya saja Nokia. Dampak inilah yang nantinya dikenal dengan era disrupsi.

Disrupsi itu sendiri menurut Reynald Kasali (2017: 120) diperkenalkan oleh Clayton M. Christensen sejak 1997. Inti dari adanya disrupsi itu sendiri adalah kemunculan berbagai teknologi yang membantu kehidupan manusia dengan 3 sifat dominan, yakni praktis, inovatif dan ekonomis. Dari pengertian inilah muncul berbagai teknologi kehidupan manusia yang berlandaskan dengan adanya penggunaan serba online.

Penggunaan serba online dalam berbagai bidang kehidupan inilah yang nantinya memunculkan banyak dampak buruk bagi manusia. Salah satunya adalah yaitu memudarnya Nasionalisme dan Patriotisme pada kalangan muda. Hal ini disebabkan oleh budaya yang masuk dari Negara asing dan diterima oleh pemuda kita tanpa adanya pemisahan dan penyaringan budaya tersebut.

Mereka berpandangan bahwa budaya asing adalah budaya yang modern dan jauh lebih maju daripada budaya bangsanya sendiri. Hal ini berakibat pada lunturnya nilai-nilai luhur bangsa pada generasi muda.

Kelunturan nilai luhur tersebut terlihat dari memudarnya rasa Nasionalisme, banyak pemuda yang mengalami disorientasi, dislokasi dan menjadi seorang merkantilis atau menguntukan diri pribadinya saja. Sebagai salah satu solusinya generasi muda harus lebih memahami mengenai dasar negara, Pancasila.

Di era disrupsi ini peran Pancasila tentulah sangat penting untuk tetap menjaga eksistensi kepribadian bangsa Indonesia Hal ini dikarenakan adanya kecanggihan teknologi internet ini, batasan-batasan diantara negara seakan tak terlihat.

Kedudukan Pancasila sebagai pilar bangsa yang mengandung nilai-nilai bermasyarakat, berbangsa, dan bernegara kini sudah tidak begitu penting lagi bagi beberapa kalangan generasi muda. Padahal apabila dasar negara kita terus-menerus mengalami ketergerusan seperti ini, kegoncangan dalam kehidupan di Indonesia tidak akan bisa terelakan.

Hal inilah yang melatarbelakangi penyusun untuk menyusun esai dengan judul "Implementasi Nilai Pancasila pada Pembelajaran Sejarah sebagai Jawaban untuk Tantangan Revolusi 4.0".

Pembahasan Untuk menjawab tantangan revolusi 4.0., patutlah kita sebagai generasi muda bisa memperkuat dan mempertajam nilai-nilai Pancasila dalam kehidupan. Adapun beberapa implementasi Pancasila yang dikembangkan pada revolusi 4.0 ini adalah sebagai berikut :

A. Mengenalkan Pancasila Lewat Pendidikan Sejarah

Pendidikan sejarah adalah salah satu solusi untuk kembali menghidupkan nilai Pancasila yang mati di tengah globalisasi. Karena dengan sejarah kita dapat mengenalkan bagaimana proses perumusan Pancasila, mengingat kembali bagaimana para pahlawan dulu memperjuangkan Pancasila dan bagaimana generasi saat ini seharusnya bersikap terhadap dasar negara itu.

Sebagai suatu contoh, pada tanggal 30 September 1965 terjadi pemberontakan besar besaran oleh partai komunis Indonesia atau lebih sering kita dengar dengan nama G30S/PKI atau hari kesaktian Pancasila.

Pada saat itu kita tahu bahwa tujuh perwira tinggi militer Indonesia dan beberapa orang lain tewas dalam mempertahankan ideologi Pancasila yang akan diubah menjadi ideologi Komunisme.

Dengan adanya kejadian tersebut, maka kita dapat mengajarkan pada generasi muda bahwa Pancasila tidak terlahir dari arus yang tenang tetapi pernah melewati ombak yang memukul-mukul hingga harus berkorban darah dalam menjaga keutuhannya. Oleh sebab itulah jika kita memperbanyak mempelajari sejarahnya, maka pemuda akan tergerak untuk mempelajari kembali isi Pancasila.

Jika mereka sudah kembali mau untuk mempelajari Pancasila maka kita akan mudah untuk menggerakkan mereka untuk kembali ke rel bangsanya, menumbuhkan rasa cinta kepada ideologi bangsanya dan sejarah bangsanya.

Dengan tumbuhnya rasa cinta ini maka akan mudah bagi pendidik untuk mengajak mereka mengimplementasikan nilai Pancasila dalam kehidupan mereka sehari-hari (SP, wawancara, 13 September 2019).

Menurut Tsabit Azinar Ahmad dalam jurnalnya (2015: 2) berkata bahwa Pendidikan sejarah memiliki peran penting terhadap pembangunan karakter masyarakat. Hal ini tercermin dalam tujuan mata pelajaran sejarah dalam Permendiknas Nomor 22 tahun 2006 yang berisikan sebagai berikut:

Mengandung nilai-nilai kepahlawanan, keteladanan, kepeloporan, patriotisme, nasionalisme, dan semangat pantang menyerah yang mendasari proses pembentukan watak dan kepribadian peserta didik.

Peran penting ini didukung dengan materi-materi yang mengandung nilai-nilai penting bagi peserta didik. Melalui mata pelajaran sejarah, pendidikan karakter dapat diintegrasikan dalam materi-materi pelajaran dan proses pembelajarannya.

B. Alternatif Lain

Adapun upaya lain yang dapat kita kembangkan adalah sebagai berikut.

1. Membuka Lembaran Sejarah Bangsa

Pada tahap ini anak diajak untuk berpikir kembali ke belakang untuk melihat sejarah bangsanya dalam mendirikan bangsa yang berdaulat. Penyusun harap pada tahap ini usia anak berada di usia 8-10 tahun atau kita anggap usia Sekolah Dasar. Karena saat usia itu anak akan mudah menangkap apa yang diajarkan orang.

Dengan begitu, guru di sekolah dapat dengan mudah menerapkan nila- nilai sejarah bangsa kepada anak didiknya. Di tahap ini juga alangkah baiknya jika kita mulai menanamkan sila pertama yaitu Ketuhanan Yang Maha Esa. Diharapkan melalui sila pertama ini mereka dapat belajar untuk hidup berdasarkan hukum agamanya dan tidak lupa mengingat sejarah bangsanya.

2. Penanaman Bela Negara

Pada Tahap ini akan melibatkan anak usia kelas 6 Sekolah Dasar hingga usia kelas Sekolah Menengah Pertama. Pemilihan taraf usia ini dikarenakan pada saat usia tersebut, anak mulai mengetahui dunia luar dan mereka sedang dalam proses mencari jati diri mereka.

Di dalam proses ini memang kita tidak boleh melibatkan peranan guru saja tetapi peran orang tua juga sangat dibutuhkan. Dalam tahapan umur ini, kita berfokus pada sila ke dua dan tiga serta pada penanaman karakter. Adanya kegiatan pramuka juga menjadi salah satu solusi untuk mewujudkan pendidikan bela negara.

Selain itu tahapan umur ini, juga harus sudah mulai dikenalkan dengan literasi. Selain dengan menggunakan kegiatan pramuka dan pengenalan literasi, pendidikan karakter juga dapat diwujudkan melalui pelajaran agama, pendidikan kewarganegaraan, dan norma di masyarakat.

3. Tahap Kesiapan

Tahap ini menjadi waktu yang tepat untuk penyempurnaan setelah melewati tahapan-tahapan sebelumnya. Pada tahapan ini anak yang dilibatkan adalah anak usia Sekolah Menengah Atas. Diperkirakan bahwa pada usia ini mereka telah terbuka pandangannya tentang dunia yang lebih luas.

Di sinilah waktunya anak diajarkan bagaimana pelaksanaan pemerintahan di Indonesia atau lebih spesifiknya adalah mereka diajarkan untuk mempelajari Pancasila dengan ruang lingkup yang lebih luas. Mereka juga harus diajarkan untuk melihat kondisi masyarakat Indonesia yang sebenarnya saat ini.

Kesimpulannya yaitu dengan perkembangan zaman yang ada mengakibatkan adanya suatu perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi yang canggih dan praktis. Dengan kepraktisan pengaksesan berbagai media sosial banyak anak-anak yang salah menggunakannya, sehingga mereka mengembangkan perilaku buruk.

Oleh sebab itulah, secara tidak langsung penerapan Pancasila memburuk. Banyaknya tindakan menyimpang, kriminalitas, asusila, berbagai macam tindakan kekerasan yang mirisnya banyak terjadi di kalangan generasi muda. Rendahnya tingkat religi yang diharapkan bahwa agama mampu mengatasi permasalahan yang ada. Oleh karena itu, penerapan nilai-nilai Pancasila adalah solusi etis untuk menghadapi era revolusi 4.0.

6. Contoh Esai tentang Diri Sendiri

Diri Sendiri Oleh: Afifah Bintang Umarizka Azzahra,

Nama saya Afifah Bintang Umarizka Azzahra, lahir di Pangkal Pinang pada tanggal 22 Juni 1998. Tepatnya setelah kerusuhan '98 di tanah jawa berakhir, akibat kericuhan itu banyak penduduk jawa berdarah cina mengungsi ke Pulau Bangka Belitung.

Saya bukanlah penduduk tulen Bangka Belitung, namun tuntutan pekerjaan orang tua yang menyebabkan saya numpang lahir di pulau ujung Indonesia ini. Saya dibesarkan di kota Cirebon.

Saya anak ketiga dari empat bersaudara. Kakak saya Azhar Fathurrahman Wijaya dan Izhar Fathurrochim Wijaya adalah sepasang kembar tidak identik, mereka kini menjadi mahasiswa semester 6 di universitas berbeda. Adik saya Ahmad Dzakki saat ini adalah siswa kelas 3 di SDIT Assunnah Cirebon.

Jarak usia antara saya dan adik saya memang cukup karena ayah kami berbeda. Tepatnya pada usia 5 tahun saya harus menyaksikan perpisahan antara ibu dan ayah saya.

Sekitar 3 tahun setelah perpisahan ayah dan ibu saya, ibu saya akhirnya melabuhkan hati pada seseorang pengganti ayah. Hasil pernikahan mereka adalah si bungsu Dzakki. Pada usia 15 tahun, jarak antara saya dan ayah saya semakin jauh, bukan lagi dipisahkan oleh jarak antara kota Cirebon dan Bandung tapi kini harus dipisahkan jarak dua alam yang berbeda.

Hubungan antara anak dan ayah yang kami jalin memang tidak seerat keluarga pada umumnya, karena kesempatan kami untuk bersama sangat singkat. Namun itu tidak membuat berkurangnya rasa penyesalan saya karena telah menyia-nyiakan waktu untuk berbakti kepadanya.

Saya memulai pendidikan di TK Islam Al-Azhar 07 Cirebon pada usia 5 tahun. Pada tingkat pendidikan awal ini, saya dapat menemukan bakat di bidang seni terutama menggambar.

Awalnya saya hanya mengikuti kegiatan ekstrakurikuler menggambar di sekolah, kemudian guru menggambar yang kerap saya panggil Kak Yos seperti terus membantu saya mengembangkan kemampuan menggambar yang saya miliki. Hingga akhirnya banyak perlombaan yang saya ikuti dan saya menangkan.

Prestasi terbaik saya di tingkat TK saat itu adalah mendapatkan juara 3 pada perlombaan menggambar tingkat provinsi, saat itu para kompetitor bukan hanya dari tingkat TK namun tingkat SD. Perlombaan itu diselenggarakan di Kota Bandung, dan ketika itu kedua orang tua saya sedang melaksanakan ibadah haji sehingga saya hanya ditemani oleh Kak Yos, Paman, dan Bibi.

Di tengah perlombaan, saya sempat menangis karena rindu dengan orang tua, hal itu sepertinya membuat seorang juri berperawakan besar kesal mendengar tangisan saya. Ia pun menyuruh saya berhenti menggambar dan segera menelpon orang tua saya, hal itu bukannya membuat saya tenang tetapi malah membuat tangisan saya menjadi-jadi.

Akhirnya juri mengizinkan Kak Yos untuk masuk ke dalam ruangan dan menenangkan saya dari belakang garis area perlombaan, untunglah saya dapat menyelesaikan gambar tepat waktu. Setelah pengumuman pemenang, Kak Yos memberikan saya sebuah hadiah berupa boneka koki kecil, yang hingga kini masih saya simpan.

Awalnya saya berharap untuk menjadi Juara I agar dapat melanjutkan perlombaan tingkat nasional, namun karena gejolak emosi yang saya alami rasanya sulit untuk berkonsentrasi. Selepas saya lulus dari TK Islam Al-Azhar 07, saya melanjutkan pendidikan di SD Islam Al-Azhar 03 Cirebon.

Di Tingkat SD, kemampuan saya dalam menggambar seperti tidak terusik lagi, saya lebih terfokus pada kemampuan akademis. Setiap tahunnya selalu diadakan seleksi olimpiade berbagai mata pelajaran untuk diikutsertakan pada perlombaan antar SDI Al-Azhar di Indonesia.

Ketika saya berada di kelas 4 saya mengikuti seleksi olimpiade di mata pelajaran Pendidikan Kewarganegaraan dan Pengetahuan Sosial. Akhirnya saya lolos pada tahap seleksi, beberapa bulan sebelum perlombaan wali kelas saya yang juga merupakan Pembina olimpiade PKPS membimbing saya untuk mempersiapkan segala hal. Hingga akhirnya saya dapat meraih juara 2 lomba cerdas cermat PKPS se-SD Islam Al-Azhar Indonesia.

Saat itu perlombaan diadakan di Al-Azhar Bekasi, saya bersama teman-teman lainnya berangkat bersama guru-guru pendamping dan beberapa orang tua murid. Seperti biasanya orangtua saya tidak menemani saya ke perlombaan, hal ini membuat saya terbiasa menghadapi lomba tanpa orang tua.

Kebiasaan ini yang justru membuat saya hilang konsentrasi ketika orang tua saya tiba-tiba hadir di tengah-tengah perlombaan. Sejak itu saya selalu berpesan agar orang tua saya tidak datang saat saya berlomba, tapi mereka hanya saya izinkan datang ketika pengumuman hasil lomba.

Pertemanan di bangku sekolah dasar merupakan pertemanan yang memiliki ikatan terkuat, walaupun sudah berpisah di berbagai kota berbeda pertemanan yang terbentuk di sekolah dasar tetap abadi bahkan semakin erat.

Setelah kelulusan saya melanjutkan studi di SMP Negeri 1 Kota Cirebon, di sinilah saya memulai mengenal organisasi walaupun sangatlah awam. Saya bergabung di organisasi Majelis Permusyawaratan Kelas atau biasa disebut MPK. Disini saya belajar membuat acara atau proyek, proyek pertama saya dan OSIS MPK adalah pentas seni dengan nama Spectrum (Spensa Creatrix Artes Festum) 2012 yang kini menjadi acara tahunan di SMP Negeri 1 Kota Cirebon.

Saya merasa bangga karena menjadi pelopor adanya acara pentas seni sekaligus pencetus nama Spectrum. Selain berorganisasi saya juga tak lupa akan kewajiban sebagai pelajar yaitu belajar menuntut ilmu, akhirnya saya mendapatkan nilai ujian nasional yang cukup memuaskan yaitu 37,2.

Bermodalkan NEM 37,2 saya mendaftarkan diri ke SMAN 2 Cirebon yang merupakan almamater dari ayah dan kakak saya Izhar. Saya cukup terkagum pada kedisiplinan sekolah ini, dan tingginya angka siswa yang diterima di perguruan tinggi negeri. Walaupun pernah berorganisasi di tingkat SMP saya tetap mengikuti organisasi OSIS di sekolah ini.

Tidak mudah untuk menjadi anggota organisasi OSIS, kegiatan semi militer pun dilakukan demi jabatan yang diinginkan. Bidang yang saya pilih sangat sesuai dengan minat saya di bidang seni, dan saya pun kembali mengadakan acara pensi yang dinamakan Supreme (Smanda Ultimate Performance) pada tahun 2015.

Selain acara Pensi, saya juga ikut serta dalam acara pelepasan kelas XII tahun ajaran 2014-2015. Saat ini saya duduk dibangku kelas XII IPA 9 yang sudah merupakan ujung dari waktu saya di SMA ini. Banyak kejadian terjadi yang mengarahkan saya ke arah kedewasaan, karena di tahap ini saya lebih banyak belajar dari kesalahan yang saya perbuat. Indahnya persahabatan dan kisah cinta klasik juga saya temui saat masa SMA.

Peranku bagi Indonesia: Pendidikan, Fondasi Kemajuan Bangsa Oleh: Ahmad Nashruddin

Sejak kecil, Ibu saya telah sering menyampaikan pentingnya pendidikan, baik secara lisan maupun melalui sikap-sikap beliau dalam mendidik kami, putra-putrinya. Saya mengenal pendidikan sebagai sebuah proses panjang yang bertujuan untuk menanamkan nilai-nilai yang harus dipegang dalam hidup. Proses tersebut membutuhkan semangat dan ketelatenan luar biasa.

Beranjak sedikit lebih dewasa, di jenjang Sekolah Dasar saya memperoleh informasi mengenai perbedaan antara mengajar dan mendidik. Mengajar hanya terbatas pada penyampaian ilmu pengetahuan, sementara mendidik adalah proses pembentukan karakter yang baik.

Jadi, seorang guru sebagai orang tua anak didik di sekolah memegang peran bukan hanya sebagai pengajar, namun juga harus menjadi pendidik. Mengapa hal ini penting bagi saya? Karena menjadi pengajar adalah cita-cita saya.

Sejak kecil, saya sangat senang mengamati profil guru saya, dan memproyeksikan bahwa saya akan menjadi seperti beliau kelak. Sewaktu bersekolah di TK, saya bercita-cita menjadi guru TK. Selepas TK, 6 tahun bersekolah di SD, cita-cita saya bergeser, ingin menjadi guru SD.

Ketika masuk SMP, saya bercita-cita untuk dapat bersekolah hingga ke jenjang perguruan tinggi dan beraktivitas menjadi dosen kelak. Inilah peran yang ingin saya ambil bagi Indonesia: menjadi pengajar dan pendidik, baik secara formal sebagai pekerjaan maupun secara nonformal di keluarga dan masyarakat. Sehingga, dalam prosesnya, saya mensinkronisasi minat dan cita-cita saya tersebut dengan aktivitas saya sehari-hari.

Salah satu langkah utama yang diperlukan untuk dapat menjadi dosen adalah dengan bersekolah hingga ke jenjang pendidikan yang sesuai. Selepas SMA, saya melanjutkan studi di bidang terapan yang saya minati, yaitu Fakultas Farmasi.

Untuk mengembangkan kemampuan baik akademik maupun soft skill, saya aktif terlibat dalam organisasi Badan Eksekutif Mahasiswa tingkat Fakultas, serta menjadi staf riset junior di Cancer Chemoprevention Research Center (CCRC), disesuaikan dengan beban kerja saya sebagai seorang mahasiswa Fakultas Farmasi.

Selain itu, saya juga bekerja sebagai asisten praktikum dengan tugas membimbing praktikan dalam menjalankan praktikum. Di samping itu, saya juga aktif mengikuti maupun mengelola berbagai kegiatan ilmiah, baik berupa seminar maupun workshop untuk mengasah kemampuan berinteraksi dan berkomunikasi secara efektif dengan orang lain.

Setelah lulus dari Program Studi Profesi Apoteker, sembari menunggu kesempatan untuk dapat melanjutkan studi ke jenjang magister (yang menjadi syarat utama untuk menjadi dosen) saya bergabung menjadi asisten dosen di Program Studi Farmasi Fakultas Kedokteran dan Ilmu Kesehatan Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, serta menjadi asisten praktikum di Program Studi Keperawatan Stikes 'Aisyiyah Yogyakarta.

Di bidang penelitian, saya bergabung sebagai staf riset di CCRC kembali. Di luar kegiatan formal tersebut, saya menjadi tutor lepas adik-adik di lingkungan rumah, mulai dari jenjang SD hingga SMA. Seluruh kegiatan tersebut, selain sejalan dengan minat saya, saya harapkan dapat mendukung langkah menuju cita-cita saya untuk dapat berperan bagi Indonesia di bidang pendidikan.

Dengan menjadi pendidik yang sesuai dengan minat saya, saya berharap untuk dapat memberikan sumbangsih kepada Indonesia, sekaligus menikmati prosesnya.

Peran sebagai pengajar dan pendidik bersifat luas, bukan hanya di ranah formal dalam sebuah institusi pendidikan, namun juga di tengah keluarga dan masyarakat. Hal tersebut harus dilaksanakan secara kontinyu dan konsisten. Sebab, pendidikan adalah salah satu aspek fundamental bagi majunya sebuah bangsa.

Secara intelegensi, masyarakat Indonesia telah diakui memiliki level yang tinggi. Dengan didukung pengembangan mental yang baik, semoga Indonesia dapat berjalan menuju ke arah yang lebih baik.

• Membuat kerangka dan kata kunci dari masing-masing bagian yang ingin dibuat pada esai
• Usahakan untuk menggunakan model mixed opinion daripada strong opinion
• Rajin membaca serta peka dengan isu-isu yang ada
• Asah dan terus tingkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis, ketangkasan, hingga grammar (jika menulis menggunakan Bahasa Inggris.

What Is a Short Essay?

A short essay is any literary essay piece with the objective of either presenting an idea, exposing a topic, or persuading a reader. It is called short essay in the sense that the way that a certain topic is presented is congested but still focuses on the goal of making the audience understand the whole point of the essay.

Short essays still follow the pattern of having the introduction, the body, and the conclusion are parts of an essay although compared to a normal formal essay , it is shortened. The body of a short essay could be limited to a paragraph but should contain the whole presentation of the topic.

1. Write the introduction.

Need to defend your opinion on an issue? Argumentative essays are one of the most popular types of essays you’ll write in school. They combine persuasive arguments with fact-based research, and, when done well, can be powerful tools for making someone agree with your point of view. If you’re struggling to write an argumentative essay or just want to learn more about them, seeing examples can be a big help.

After giving an overview of this type of essay, we provide three argumentative essay examples. After each essay, we explain in-depth how the essay was structured, what worked, and where the essay could be improved. We end with tips for making your own argumentative essay as strong as possible.

What Is an Argumentative Essay?

An argumentative essay is an essay that uses evidence and facts to support the claim it’s making. Its purpose is to persuade the reader to agree with the argument being made.

A good argumentative essay will use facts and evidence to support the argument, rather than just the author’s thoughts and opinions. For example, say you wanted to write an argumentative essay stating that Charleston, SC is a great destination for families. You couldn’t just say that it’s a great place because you took your family there and enjoyed it. For it to be an argumentative essay, you need to have facts and data to support your argument, such as the number of child-friendly attractions in Charleston, special deals you can get with kids, and surveys of people who visited Charleston as a family and enjoyed it. The first argument is based entirely on feelings, whereas the second is based on evidence that can be proven.

The standard five paragraph format is common, but not required, for argumentative essays. These essays typically follow one of two formats: the Toulmin model or the Rogerian model.

• The Toulmin model is the most common. It begins with an introduction, follows with a thesis/claim, and gives data and evidence to support that claim. This style of essay also includes rebuttals of counterarguments.
• The Rogerian model analyzes two sides of an argument and reaches a conclusion after weighing the strengths and weaknesses of each.

3 Good Argumentative Essay Examples + Analysis

Below are three examples of argumentative essays, written by yours truly in my school days, as well as analysis of what each did well and where it could be improved.

Argumentative Essay Example 1

Proponents of this idea state that it will save local cities and towns money because libraries are expensive to maintain. They also believe it will encourage more people to read because they won’t have to travel to a library to get a book; they can simply click on what they want to read and read it from wherever they are. They could also access more materials because libraries won’t have to buy physical copies of books; they can simply rent out as many digital copies as they need.

However, it would be a serious mistake to replace libraries with tablets. First, digital books and resources are associated with less learning and more problems than print resources. A study done on tablet vs book reading found that people read 20-30% slower on tablets, retain 20% less information, and understand 10% less of what they read compared to people who read the same information in print. Additionally, staring too long at a screen has been shown to cause numerous health problems, including blurred vision, dizziness, dry eyes, headaches, and eye strain, at much higher instances than reading print does. People who use tablets and mobile devices excessively also have a higher incidence of more serious health issues such as fibromyalgia, shoulder and back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and muscle strain. I know that whenever I read from my e-reader for too long, my eyes begin to feel tired and my neck hurts. We should not add to these problems by giving people, especially young people, more reasons to look at screens.

Second, it is incredibly narrow-minded to assume that the only service libraries offer is book lending. Libraries have a multitude of benefits, and many are only available if the library has a physical location. Some of these benefits include acting as a quiet study space, giving people a way to converse with their neighbors, holding classes on a variety of topics, providing jobs, answering patron questions, and keeping the community connected. One neighborhood found that, after a local library instituted community events such as play times for toddlers and parents, job fairs for teenagers, and meeting spaces for senior citizens, over a third of residents reported feeling more connected to their community. Similarly, a Pew survey conducted in 2015 found that nearly two-thirds of American adults feel that closing their local library would have a major impact on their community. People see libraries as a way to connect with others and get their questions answered, benefits tablets can’t offer nearly as well or as easily.

While replacing libraries with tablets may seem like a simple solution, it would encourage people to spend even more time looking at digital screens, despite the myriad issues surrounding them. It would also end access to many of the benefits of libraries that people have come to rely on. In many areas, libraries are such an important part of the community network that they could never be replaced by a simple object.

The author begins by giving an overview of the counter-argument, then the thesis appears as the first sentence in the third paragraph. The essay then spends the rest of the paper dismantling the counter argument and showing why readers should believe the other side.

What this essay does well:

• Although it’s a bit unusual to have the thesis appear fairly far into the essay, it works because, once the thesis is stated, the rest of the essay focuses on supporting it since the counter-argument has already been discussed earlier in the paper.
• This essay includes numerous facts and cites studies to support its case. By having specific data to rely on, the author’s argument is stronger and readers will be more inclined to agree with it.
• For every argument the other side makes, the author makes sure to refute it and follow up with why her opinion is the stronger one. In order to make a strong argument, it’s important to dismantle the other side, which this essay does this by making the author's view appear stronger.
• This is a shorter paper, and if it needed to be expanded to meet length requirements, it could include more examples and go more into depth with them, such as by explaining specific cases where people benefited from local libraries.
• Additionally, while the paper uses lots of data, the author also mentions their own experience with using tablets. This should be removed since argumentative essays focus on facts and data to support an argument, not the author’s own opinion or experiences. Replacing that with more data on health issues associated with screen time would strengthen the essay.
• Some of the points made aren't completely accurate , particularly the one about digital books being cheaper. It actually often costs a library more money to rent out numerous digital copies of a book compared to buying a single physical copy. Make sure in your own essay you thoroughly research each of the points and rebuttals you make, otherwise you'll look like you don't know the issue that well.

Argumentative Essay Example 2

There are multiple drugs available to treat malaria, and many of them work well and save lives, but malaria eradication programs that focus too much on them and not enough on prevention haven’t seen long-term success in Sub-Saharan Africa. A major program to combat malaria was WHO’s Global Malaria Eradication Programme. Started in 1955, it had a goal of eliminating malaria in Africa within the next ten years. Based upon previously successful programs in Brazil and the United States, the program focused mainly on vector control. This included widely distributing chloroquine and spraying large amounts of DDT. More than one billion dollars was spent trying to abolish malaria. However, the program suffered from many problems and in 1969, WHO was forced to admit that the program had not succeeded in eradicating malaria. The number of people in Sub-Saharan Africa who contracted malaria as well as the number of malaria deaths had actually increased over 10% during the time the program was active.

One of the major reasons for the failure of the project was that it set uniform strategies and policies. By failing to consider variations between governments, geography, and infrastructure, the program was not nearly as successful as it could have been. Sub-Saharan Africa has neither the money nor the infrastructure to support such an elaborate program, and it couldn’t be run the way it was meant to. Most African countries don't have the resources to send all their people to doctors and get shots, nor can they afford to clear wetlands or other malaria prone areas. The continent’s spending per person for eradicating malaria was just a quarter of what Brazil spent. Sub-Saharan Africa simply can’t rely on a plan that requires more money, infrastructure, and expertise than they have to spare.

Additionally, the widespread use of chloroquine has created drug resistant parasites which are now plaguing Sub-Saharan Africa. Because chloroquine was used widely but inconsistently, mosquitoes developed resistance, and chloroquine is now nearly completely ineffective in Sub-Saharan Africa, with over 95% of mosquitoes resistant to it. As a result, newer, more expensive drugs need to be used to prevent and treat malaria, which further drives up the cost of malaria treatment for a region that can ill afford it.

Instead of developing plans to treat malaria after the infection has incurred, programs should focus on preventing infection from occurring in the first place. Not only is this plan cheaper and more effective, reducing the number of people who contract malaria also reduces loss of work/school days which can further bring down the productivity of the region.

One of the cheapest and most effective ways of preventing malaria is to implement insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs).  These nets provide a protective barrier around the person or people using them. While untreated bed nets are still helpful, those treated with insecticides are much more useful because they stop mosquitoes from biting people through the nets, and they help reduce mosquito populations in a community, thus helping people who don’t even own bed nets.  Bed nets are also very effective because most mosquito bites occur while the person is sleeping, so bed nets would be able to drastically reduce the number of transmissions during the night. In fact, transmission of malaria can be reduced by as much as 90% in areas where the use of ITNs is widespread. Because money is so scarce in Sub-Saharan Africa, the low cost is a great benefit and a major reason why the program is so successful. Bed nets cost roughly 2 USD to make, last several years, and can protect two adults. Studies have shown that, for every 100-1000 more nets are being used, one less child dies of malaria. With an estimated 300 million people in Africa not being protected by mosquito nets, there’s the potential to save three million lives by spending just a few dollars per person.

Reducing the number of people who contract malaria would also reduce poverty levels in Africa significantly, thus improving other aspects of society like education levels and the economy. Vector control is more effective than treatment strategies because it means fewer people are getting sick. When fewer people get sick, the working population is stronger as a whole because people are not put out of work from malaria, nor are they caring for sick relatives. Malaria-afflicted families can typically only harvest 40% of the crops that healthy families can harvest. Additionally, a family with members who have malaria spends roughly a quarter of its income treatment, not including the loss of work they also must deal with due to the illness. It’s estimated that malaria costs Africa 12 billion USD in lost income every year. A strong working population creates a stronger economy, which Sub-Saharan Africa is in desperate need of.  

This essay begins with an introduction, which ends with the thesis (that malaria eradication plans in Sub-Saharan Africa should focus on prevention rather than treatment). The first part of the essay lays out why the counter argument (treatment rather than prevention) is not as effective, and the second part of the essay focuses on why prevention of malaria is the better path to take.

• The thesis appears early, is stated clearly, and is supported throughout the rest of the essay. This makes the argument clear for readers to understand and follow throughout the essay.
• There’s lots of solid research in this essay, including specific programs that were conducted and how successful they were, as well as specific data mentioned throughout. This evidence helps strengthen the author’s argument.
• The author makes a case for using expanding bed net use over waiting until malaria occurs and beginning treatment, but not much of a plan is given for how the bed nets would be distributed or how to ensure they’re being used properly. By going more into detail of what she believes should be done, the author would be making a stronger argument.
• The introduction of the essay does a good job of laying out the seriousness of the problem, but the conclusion is short and abrupt. Expanding it into its own paragraph would give the author a final way to convince readers of her side of the argument.

Argumentative Essay Example 3

There are many ways payments could work. They could be in the form of a free-market approach, where athletes are able to earn whatever the market is willing to pay them, it could be a set amount of money per athlete, or student athletes could earn income from endorsements, autographs, and control of their likeness, similar to the way top Olympians earn money.

Proponents of the idea believe that, because college athletes are the ones who are training, participating in games, and bringing in audiences, they should receive some sort of compensation for their work. If there were no college athletes, the NCAA wouldn’t exist, college coaches wouldn’t receive there (sometimes very high) salaries, and brands like Nike couldn’t profit from college sports. In fact, the NCAA brings in roughly $1 billion in revenue a year, but college athletes don’t receive any of that money in the form of a paycheck. Additionally, people who believe college athletes should be paid state that paying college athletes will actually encourage them to remain in college longer and not turn pro as quickly, either by giving them a way to begin earning money in college or requiring them to sign a contract stating they’ll stay at the university for a certain number of years while making an agreed-upon salary.  

Supporters of this idea point to Zion Williamson, the Duke basketball superstar, who, during his freshman year, sustained a serious knee injury. Many argued that, even if he enjoyed playing for Duke, it wasn’t worth risking another injury and ending his professional career before it even began for a program that wasn’t paying him. Williamson seems to have agreed with them and declared his eligibility for the NCAA draft later that year. If he was being paid, he may have stayed at Duke longer. In fact, roughly a third of student athletes surveyed stated that receiving a salary while in college would make them “strongly consider” remaining collegiate athletes longer before turning pro.

Paying athletes could also stop the recruitment scandals that have plagued the NCAA. In 2018, the NCAA stripped the University of Louisville's men's basketball team of its 2013 national championship title because it was discovered coaches were using sex workers to entice recruits to join the team. There have been dozens of other recruitment scandals where college athletes and recruits have been bribed with anything from having their grades changed, to getting free cars, to being straight out bribed. By paying college athletes and putting their salaries out in the open, the NCAA could end the illegal and underhanded ways some schools and coaches try to entice athletes to join.

People who argue against the idea of paying college athletes believe the practice could be disastrous for college sports. By paying athletes, they argue, they’d turn college sports into a bidding war, where only the richest schools could afford top athletes, and the majority of schools would be shut out from developing a talented team (though some argue this already happens because the best players often go to the most established college sports programs, who typically pay their coaches millions of dollars per year). It could also ruin the tight camaraderie of many college teams if players become jealous that certain teammates are making more money than they are.

They also argue that paying college athletes actually means only a small fraction would make significant money. Out of the 350 Division I athletic departments, fewer than a dozen earn any money. Nearly all the money the NCAA makes comes from men’s football and basketball, so paying college athletes would make a small group of men--who likely will be signed to pro teams and begin making millions immediately out of college--rich at the expense of other players.

Those against paying college athletes also believe that the athletes are receiving enough benefits already. The top athletes already receive scholarships that are worth tens of thousands per year, they receive free food/housing/textbooks, have access to top medical care if they are injured, receive top coaching, get travel perks and free gear, and can use their time in college as a way to capture the attention of professional recruiters. No other college students receive anywhere near as much from their schools.

People on this side also point out that, while the NCAA brings in a massive amount of money each year, it is still a non-profit organization. How? Because over 95% of those profits are redistributed to its members’ institutions in the form of scholarships, grants, conferences, support for Division II and Division III teams, and educational programs. Taking away a significant part of that revenue would hurt smaller programs that rely on that money to keep running.

While both sides have good points, it’s clear that the negatives of paying college athletes far outweigh the positives. College athletes spend a significant amount of time and energy playing for their school, but they are compensated for it by the scholarships and perks they receive. Adding a salary to that would result in a college athletic system where only a small handful of athletes (those likely to become millionaires in the professional leagues) are paid by a handful of schools who enter bidding wars to recruit them, while the majority of student athletics and college athletic programs suffer or even shut down for lack of money. Continuing to offer the current level of benefits to student athletes makes it possible for as many people to benefit from and enjoy college sports as possible.

This argumentative essay follows the Rogerian model. It discusses each side, first laying out multiple reasons people believe student athletes should be paid, then discussing reasons why the athletes shouldn’t be paid. It ends by stating that college athletes shouldn’t be paid by arguing that paying them would destroy college athletics programs and cause them to have many of the issues professional sports leagues have.

• Both sides of the argument are well developed, with multiple reasons why people agree with each side. It allows readers to get a full view of the argument and its nuances.
• Certain statements on both sides are directly rebuffed in order to show where the strengths and weaknesses of each side lie and give a more complete and sophisticated look at the argument.
• Using the Rogerian model can be tricky because oftentimes you don’t explicitly state your argument until the end of the paper. Here, the thesis doesn’t appear until the first sentence of the final paragraph. That doesn’t give readers a lot of time to be convinced that your argument is the right one, compared to a paper where the thesis is stated in the beginning and then supported throughout the paper. This paper could be strengthened if the final paragraph was expanded to more fully explain why the author supports the view, or if the paper had made it clearer that paying athletes was the weaker argument throughout.

3 Tips for Writing a Good Argumentative Essay

Now that you’ve seen examples of what good argumentative essay samples look like, follow these three tips when crafting your own essay.

#1: Make Your Thesis Crystal Clear

The thesis is the key to your argumentative essay; if it isn’t clear or readers can’t find it easily, your entire essay will be weak as a result. Always make sure that your thesis statement is easy to find. The typical spot for it is the final sentence of the introduction paragraph, but if it doesn’t fit in that spot for your essay, try to at least put it as the first or last sentence of a different paragraph so it stands out more.

Also make sure that your thesis makes clear what side of the argument you’re on. After you’ve written it, it’s a great idea to show your thesis to a couple different people--classmates are great for this. Just by reading your thesis they should be able to understand what point you’ll be trying to make with the rest of your essay.

#2: Show Why the Other Side Is Weak

When writing your essay, you may be tempted to ignore the other side of the argument and just focus on your side, but don’t do this. The best argumentative essays really tear apart the other side to show why readers shouldn’t believe it. Before you begin writing your essay, research what the other side believes, and what their strongest points are. Then, in your essay, be sure to mention each of these and use evidence to explain why they’re incorrect/weak arguments. That’ll make your essay much more effective than if you only focused on your side of the argument.

#3: Use Evidence to Support Your Side

Remember, an essay can’t be an argumentative essay if it doesn’t support its argument with evidence. For every point you make, make sure you have facts to back it up. Some examples are previous studies done on the topic, surveys of large groups of people, data points, etc. There should be lots of numbers in your argumentative essay that support your side of the argument. This will make your essay much stronger compared to only relying on your own opinions to support your argument.

This paper presents strategic management as an important business management concept. It defines strategy and explains the key concepts in strategic management; strategic vision, objectives, strategy formulation, strategy implementation, evaluation and initiating corrective action. The research also focuses on the corporate governance aspect of strategic management; role of the board of directors in crafting and executing strategy. The different levels of pitching strategy are also discussed in this paper; corporate, business, functional and operational. All these concepts are examined with a view to highlight their importance in the effective and efficient management of business organizations. In an operating environment that is dynamic and highly competitive, business organizations need to appreciate the importance of crafting and effectively executing strategies that can help them create sustainable competitive advantage.

Strategic management is one of the primary areas. This study shows the results of matching the extent of strategy management in a major business policy game and the performance (results) of this effort. The general the objective of this paper is to exanimate effect of strategic management practices on firm performance in telecommunication companies in Mogadishu, Somalia. The target population of this study was top managers, middle managers and normal employee of some telecommunication companies in Mogadishu. There are more than five telecommunication companies Mogadishu but our study will focus on three Telecommunication Companies in Mogadishu. The target population of this study will be 62. Therefore Since the study population (N) is 110. Error of tolerance will be 0.05. Thus the sample size is 54 respondents. The study collected primary data which was analyzed using descriptive statistics including frequencies tables, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation. Data collected from questionnaires will code and keyed into a computer. Quantitative data will analyze using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Descriptive statistics including the means and standard deviations were used to analyze quantitative data and capture the characteristics of the variables under study. A regression model will be applied to determine the relationship between Strategy Formulation, Strategy implementation and Strategy control and evaluation as the independent variables and firm performance of telecommunication companies in Mogadishu as the dependent variable. Pearson's product moment correlation analysis is also used and it's a powerful technique for determine the relationship among variables. Correlation coefficient will be used to analyze the strength of the relations between variable.

SMEs in Bangladesh contributes a significant part in country?s total GDP and largest sector in employment, overall economic development and infrastructural development, so the performance of these SMEs is very crucial for the country. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the relationship between strategic management practices and the performance of SMEs operating in Bangladesh. Three variables (strategy formulation, strategy implementation, and strategy evaluation) were developed from the existing literature. Hypotheses were tested by using statistical software (SPSS). Correlation and regression analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between variables. Result indicated all three variables (strategy formulation, strategy implementation, strategy evaluation) and overall strategic management practices are statistically significant with the performance of SMEs in Bangladesh. Policy recommendation, practical application were discussed and future implication of the research direction were recommended.

1. Oksidasi

Oksidasi adalah proses kehilangan elektron oleh suatu atom, ion, atau molekul. Dalam proses ini, bilangan oksidasi zat yang mengalami oksidasi meningkat.

Zat yang kehilangan elektron atau mengalami oksidasi disebut sebagai agen reduktor (karena ia menyumbangkan elektron dan menyebabkan zat lain direduksi).

Reduksi adalah proses penerimaan elektron oleh suatu atom, ion, atau molekul. Dalam proses ini, bilangan oksidasi zat yang mengalami reduksi menurun.

Zat yang menerima elektron atau mengalami reduksi disebut sebagai agen oksidator (karena ia mengambil elektron dan menyebabkan zat lain dioksidasi).

Contoh reaksi redoks adalah reaksi antara seng metalik dan larutan tembaga(II) sulfat:

Zn (s)+CuSO4(aq)→ZnSO4(aq)+Cu (s).

Dalam reaksi ini, seng (Zn) kehilangan dua elektron (dioksidasi) dan tembaga(II) menerima dua elektron (direduksi).

Seng bertindak sebagai agen reduktor dan tembaga(II) sulfat bertindak sebagai agen oksidator.

How Pew Research Center will report on generations moving forward

Journalists, researchers and the public often look at society through the lens of generation, using terms like Millennial or Gen Z to describe groups of similarly aged people. This approach can help readers see themselves in the data and assess where we are and where we’re headed as a country.

Pew Research Center has been at the forefront of generational research over the years, telling the story of Millennials as they came of age politically and as they moved more firmly into adult life . In recent years, we’ve also been eager to learn about Gen Z as the leading edge of this generation moves into adulthood.

But generational research has become a crowded arena. The field has been flooded with content that’s often sold as research but is more like clickbait or marketing mythology. There’s also been a growing chorus of criticism about generational research and generational labels in particular.

Recently, as we were preparing to embark on a major research project related to Gen Z, we decided to take a step back and consider how we can study generations in a way that aligns with our values of accuracy, rigor and providing a foundation of facts that enriches the public dialogue.

A typical generation spans 15 to 18 years. As many critics of generational research point out, there is great diversity of thought, experience and behavior within generations.

We set out on a yearlong process of assessing the landscape of generational research. We spoke with experts from outside Pew Research Center, including those who have been publicly critical of our generational analysis, to get their take on the pros and cons of this type of work. We invested in methodological testing to determine whether we could compare findings from our earlier telephone surveys to the online ones we’re conducting now. And we experimented with higher-level statistical analyses that would allow us to isolate the effect of generation.

What emerged from this process was a set of clear guidelines that will help frame our approach going forward. Many of these are principles we’ve always adhered to , but others will require us to change the way we’ve been doing things in recent years.

Here’s a short overview of how we’ll approach generational research in the future:

We’ll only do generational analysis when we have historical data that allows us to compare generations at similar stages of life. When comparing generations, it’s crucial to control for age. In other words, researchers need to look at each generation or age cohort at a similar point in the life cycle. (“Age cohort” is a fancy way of referring to a group of people who were born around the same time.)

When doing this kind of research, the question isn’t whether young adults today are different from middle-aged or older adults today. The question is whether young adults today are different from young adults at some specific point in the past.

To answer this question, it’s necessary to have data that’s been collected over a considerable amount of time – think decades. Standard surveys don’t allow for this type of analysis. We can look at differences across age groups, but we can’t compare age groups over time.

Another complication is that the surveys we conducted 20 or 30 years ago aren’t usually comparable enough to the surveys we’re doing today. Our earlier surveys were done over the phone, and we’ve since transitioned to our nationally representative online survey panel , the American Trends Panel . Our internal testing showed that on many topics, respondents answer questions differently depending on the way they’re being interviewed. So we can’t use most of our surveys from the late 1980s and early 2000s to compare Gen Z with Millennials and Gen Xers at a similar stage of life.

This means that most generational analysis we do will use datasets that have employed similar methodologies over a long period of time, such as surveys from the U.S. Census Bureau. A good example is our 2020 report on Millennial families , which used census data going back to the late 1960s. The report showed that Millennials are marrying and forming families at a much different pace than the generations that came before them.

Even when we have historical data, we will attempt to control for other factors beyond age in making generational comparisons. If we accept that there are real differences across generations, we’re basically saying that people who were born around the same time share certain attitudes or beliefs – and that their views have been influenced by external forces that uniquely shaped them during their formative years. Those forces may have been social changes, economic circumstances, technological advances or political movements.

When we see that younger adults have different views than their older counterparts, it may be driven by their demographic traits rather than the fact that they belong to a particular generation.

The tricky part is isolating those forces from events or circumstances that have affected all age groups, not just one generation. These are often called “period effects.” An example of a period effect is the Watergate scandal, which drove down trust in government among all age groups. Differences in trust across age groups in the wake of Watergate shouldn’t be attributed to the outsize impact that event had on one age group or another, because the change occurred across the board.

Changing demographics also may play a role in patterns that might at first seem like generational differences. We know that the United States has become more racially and ethnically diverse in recent decades, and that race and ethnicity are linked with certain key social and political views. When we see that younger adults have different views than their older counterparts, it may be driven by their demographic traits rather than the fact that they belong to a particular generation.

Controlling for these factors can involve complicated statistical analysis that helps determine whether the differences we see across age groups are indeed due to generation or not. This additional step adds rigor to the process. Unfortunately, it’s often absent from current discussions about Gen Z, Millennials and other generations.

When we can’t do generational analysis, we still see value in looking at differences by age and will do so where it makes sense. Age is one of the most common predictors of differences in attitudes and behaviors. And even if age gaps aren’t rooted in generational differences, they can still be illuminating. They help us understand how people across the age spectrum are responding to key trends, technological breakthroughs and historical events.

Each stage of life comes with a unique set of experiences. Young adults are often at the leading edge of changing attitudes on emerging social trends. Take views on same-sex marriage , for example, or attitudes about gender identity .

Many middle-aged adults, in turn, face the challenge of raising children while also providing care and support to their aging parents. And older adults have their own obstacles and opportunities. All of these stories – rooted in the life cycle, not in generations – are important and compelling, and we can tell them by analyzing our surveys at any given point in time.

When we do have the data to study groups of similarly aged people over time, we won’t always default to using the standard generational definitions and labels. While generational labels are simple and catchy, there are other ways to analyze age cohorts. For example, some observers have suggested grouping people by the decade in which they were born. This would create narrower cohorts in which the members may share more in common. People could also be grouped relative to their age during key historical events (such as the Great Recession or the COVID-19 pandemic) or technological innovations (like the invention of the iPhone).

By choosing not to use the standard generational labels when they’re not appropriate, we can avoid reinforcing harmful stereotypes or oversimplifying people’s complex lived experiences.

Existing generational definitions also may be too broad and arbitrary to capture differences that exist among narrower cohorts. A typical generation spans 15 to 18 years. As many critics of generational research point out, there is great diversity of thought, experience and behavior within generations. The key is to pick a lens that’s most appropriate for the research question that’s being studied. If we’re looking at political views and how they’ve shifted over time, for example, we might group people together according to the first presidential election in which they were eligible to vote.

With these considerations in mind, our audiences should not expect to see a lot of new research coming out of Pew Research Center that uses the generational lens. We’ll only talk about generations when it adds value, advances important national debates and highlights meaningful societal trends.
