The university has since opened the pools to the public during the hours the teams are not using the pools.

The three indoor swimming pools include two heated spas in a climate-controlled environment. One swimming pool is an Olympic-sized pool with lane indicators, one is a pool designed for pool training and activities, and one is designated as a lap pool. The family memberships available are very reasonably-priced, with the only drawback of the pools being closed for public use during competition swimming and during practices for the various swim teams.

Fairbanks Parks & Recreation Indoor Courts

The Fairbanks Parks & Recreation panel determined in 2006 that indoor tennis, squash, and racquetball courts would be advantageous to the community overall. As a result, eight tennis courts, 4 squash courts and 6 racquetball courts were built for public use. The courts are available 24 hours a day for a nominal fee per play. The sports courts do not include locker or shower rooms, nor are there other facilities other than the check-in counter.

Residents and families are encouraged to use the indoor courts, although in 2022 repair and replacement of the tennis courts was initiated due to deterioration of the surface, and the replacements are not yet complete. The racquetball courts remain in use and, although the surface flooring is in good condition, the majority of tennis players have reverted to racquetball while waiting for the flooring to be replaced; therefore, there are only a limited number of reservations available on the crowded court schedules.

Recreation Island Ultimate Sports

The tropic-themed Recreation Island Ultimate Sports company is owned and operated by Lance Baker, a former National Football League player. His staff of ten employees oversees the football, baseball and other fields and courts. Included in the family area is a frisbee course, volleyball courts and other activities, along with sports training equipment and sports classes. The private membership fees at the Recreation Island Ultimate Sports are reasonable; however, the fields are outdoors, allowing for limited play during the winter months, if at all. The popular fields are highly utilized during the summer months and are open 24-hours per day with the sun exposure continuing through almost a full 24-hours. Recreation Island Ultimate Sports offers classes for children and team sports for the entire family. Childcare is included for ages through 5 years old.

Sports Arena Revitalization: Inside the Competing Plans

The City of San Diego issued a Request For Proposals asking for ideas to revitalize 48 acres of land in the Midway/Sports Arena area where Pechanga Arena sits. They received four responses. Two of them will have a chance to take on at least a billion dollar job.

San Diegans have a chance to share their opinions on the matter, even if they can't do it in person. The competing plans have been added to a virtual open house that you can see here (the site will be live until July 20).

“This is an opportunity to redevelop and reshape the Sports Arena area for the next generation, and we want to hear what San Diegans think of the proposals under consideration,” said Mayor Kevin Faulconer in a statement. “Revitalizing the Sports Arena is key to our future growth as a city and ensures that it remains one of San Diego’s most popular destinations for decades to come.”

The two proposals are called the Brookfield Properties Development (BPD) Concept and the Midway Sports & Entertainment District (MSED) Development Concept. Obviously, they have similarities and differences. Both include a plan to modernize Pechanga Arena San Diego, add a public park and residential and retail space.

Let's look at a few key areas and how each of the proposals plan on approaching them.

Both plans have a vision for an updated Sports Arena to house the Gulls, Seals, concerts and other events. BPD does not plan to make major changes, taking more of an updating approach. MSED wants to do an expansive, $125 million update, basically tearing it down to the studs and modernizing it to a 15,000-seat venue, expandable to 17,000 for concerts. MSED would also add technological updates for an eSports tournament layout.

BPD has designs for 1,800-2,100 new housing units, including affordable housing options. MSED wants to build 1,442 housing units, of which at least 10% will be affordable housing.

  • Retail and Office Space

BPD is looking to build between 505,000 and 595,000 square feet of retail and commercial space with no office buildings included. MSED has plans for 133,000 square feet of retail space and retail pavilions with 185,000 feet of office space. Both plans call for residential and retail areas to be integrated throughout the 48-acre site.

BPD’s proposal would add 1,800-2,100 parking spaces for residential/mixed use and 3,000-5,400 for commercial/arena use. MSED would provide 1,800 event parking spots and 1,204 mixed-use parking spaces.

  • Public Park

Both plans would construct a new public park that would be heavily featured in the redevelopment. The BPD plan would make a six-acre park. MSED would build a 12-acre park.

  • Entertainment

BPD’s plan calls for the existing arena to host concerts and sporting events. ASM Global has been running the event booking arm of Pechanga Arena San Diego for almost a decade and would continue doing such. MSED’s plan would also have musical acts in the Sports Arena but also add a 3,500-seat music hall.

  • More New Stuff

MSED’s proposal has a few different additions that are not included in the BPD plan. In addition to the music venue MSED would build a 250-room hotel and a 12,000-15,000 seat modular soccer stadium to house the San Diego Loyal SC for the next seven to 10 years.

  • Cost and Financing

Both proposals would cost more than $1 billion and both say they would not require any public subsidies. Both proposals call for a land lease, not a land purchase, of the 48 acres.

  • “Economic Impact”

This is one quotations because economic impact can be interpreted in multiple different ways. MSED claims its plan will generate 58,000 jobs, $560,000 annually in sales tax revenue, $2.1 million annually in property tax revenue and $2.2 million annually in Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) revenue. BPD says it will generate 3,200 annual ongoing jobs, $6.5 million in annual sales tax, $14 million in annual property taxes and $300 million ongoing and annual economic impact for the region.

One other similarity is both plans need to have the existing 30-foot height limit on buildings in the area removed or they can't proceed. A measure to keep or abolish that limit is expected to be placed on the November ballot.

History and description

Luzhniki Stadium, initially called Central Lenin Stadium, was built between 1955 and 1956. It was the result of the ambition of the Soviet leadership to upgrade the country’s sports facilities after the Soviet Union had tasted its first post-war successes at the 1952 Olympics.

Works on Luzhniki Olympic Complex started in 1954 and construction of its centrepiece stadium, also called the Grand Sports Arena, in 1955. The stadium got finished in just 450 days and officially opened on 31 July 1956.

Luzhniki Stadium served as the centrepiece stadium of the 1980 Olympics, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies, athletics events, football finals, and equestrian programme.

In 1982, a stadium disaster took place at the stadium during a second round UEFA Cup match between FC Spartak and Dutch side HFC Haarlem. In the dying seconds of the match, people started rushing for the exits to make it to the metro before the rest of the crowd. When someone fell on the icy staircases, chaos ensued, and the resulting crush and domino effect killed 66 people.

Until the 1990s, the roofless stadium could hold just over 100,000 spectators. In 1996, the stadium got extensively renovated, which included the construction of a roof over the stands and the refurbishment of the seating areas, which resulted in a decrease of capacity.

In 1999, Luzhniki Stadium hosted the UEFA Cup final between Parma and Marseille (3-0), and in 2008 the Champions League final between Manchester United and Chelsea (1-1).

The stadium was regularly used by Spartak Moscow, lacking a home of their own, until they moved to the newly built  Otkritie Arena  in 2014.

When Russia got awarded the 2018 World Cup , it was soon clear that Luzhniki Stadium would host the final and as a result had to undergo a large redevelopment. It hosted its last football match in May 2013 and closed following the IAAF Athletics World Championships in August 2013.

Redevelopment works entailed the complete reconstruction of the stands, adding a second tier, the removal of the running tracks, and an expanded roof structure. The characteristic exterior of the stadium was left intact. Works were completed in the summer of 2017, and the first football match at the reopened stadium, a friendly between Russia and Argentina (0-1), was played on 11 November 2017.

During the 2018 World Cup, Luzhniki hosted the opening match, three more first round group matches, a round of 16 match, the semi-final between Croatia and England (2-1), and the final between France and Croatia (4-2).

How to get to Luzhniki Stadium

Luzhniki Stadium is located on the Luzhniki Sports Complex, an area of sports facilities and park land in a bend of the Moskva River about 6 kilometres south-west of Moscow’s city centre.

The stadium can be reached with the red metro line 1. Station Sportivnaya, or alternatively Vorob’yovy Gory, both lie within short walking distance of the stadium. Line 1 directly connects with Moscow’s city centre, and the ride from either Okhotny Ryad or Biblioteka takes no more than 10 minutes.

Luzhniki Stadium lies practically adjacent to Moscow’s Third Ring Road. If arriving by car, orientate yourself with regards to the Moscow River and take the first exit after crossing the Moscow River at the bend where the stadium is located.

Eat, drink, and sleep near Luzhniki Stadium

Luzhniki forms part of the Luzhniki Sports Complex and is surrounded by other sports facilities and parks. Its location right on the river Moskva is pleasant on a summer’s day, but there is little around in terms of eating and drinking, which can therefore better be done in central Moscow.

If you’re into a bit of culture though, the nearby Novodevichy Convent is well worth a visit, while the Moscow State University building on the opposite side of the Moskva river is one of Moscow’s best-known landmarks.

There are a few hotels to choose from if you want to stay close to Luzhniki Stadium, most near Sportivnaya metro station, e.g.  Yunost Hotel , Business Hotel Spektr , Olimp Hotel and Blues Hotel .

Scottsdale mayor slams 'rookie developer's' unwelcome plans for new Arizona Coyotes arena

Scottsdale Mayor David Ortega is opposing the Arizona Coyotes’ potential new arena in northeast Phoenix near his city's border.

In a written statement, Ortega said the renderings and plan released by the Coyotes last week were “presented without mention of market demand for a new entertainment venue disguised as a hockey arena, or congested highway access, or questionable arena zoning entitlement.” 

Ortega also wrote: “The prospect of a rookie developer attempting to buy Arizona State Trust Land with absolutely no infrastructure on the Phoenix side of the 101/Scottsdale Road intersection at the doorstep of Scottsdale is not feasible, or welcome.”

Ortega said such a development doesn't take into account the lack of infrastructure on the land and other nearby centers with similar components in Scottsdale.

Details about the Coyotes arena plan for Scottsdale area

The Coyotes have said they intend to bid on state trust land that will be auctioned in an area north of Loop 101 freeway and west of Scottsdale Road in Phoenix. The starting bid is set at $68.5 million based on an appraisal of the l and, but could go much higher if other bidders are involved.

The Coyotes have indicated the land would be used for an arena and an entertainment district that would include restaurants and retail center, hotel, office space, a 3,500-person theater and 1,900 residential units. 

The Arizona State Land Department on Thursday listed the auction for the more than 100 acres of land on the northwest corner of Loop 101 and Scottsdale Road. The auction date is set for June 27.  Proceeds from state trust land auctions are primarily used to help fund state schools.

Ortega said he met with Arizona State Land Department officials in March and “demanded that infrastructure for the proposed site, including water and sewer, be pulled from Phoenix assets along 56th Street,” which is 2 miles west of Scottsdale Road.

"I have demanded that the 64th Street-AZ Loop 101 north exit be built out to serve the area, again to the west of Scottsdale Road. At our meeting, the Arizona State Land Department agreed that these requirements will be bundled with any successful bid for the property. I also met with the mayor of Phoenix who confirmed that all utilities must be extended from 56th Street," Ortega wrote.

With the land auction flyer, the city of Phoenix attached a letter of recommendations about zoning, traffic, water and sewer infrastructure that would be required for a developer to add to meet the demands of a new entertainment district. 

Phoenix projected the costs to be upward of $80 million on top of the cost of the land itself.

Arizona Coyotes 'committed' to being winning bidder

The Coyotes have been pursuing the area since last June, while under pressure from the NHL to find a permanent home. 

“This is our sole focus," Coyotes President and CEO Xavier Gutierrez said of the team’s plans. "And I think it's important for you to know that if we are unsuccessful, then we will have to absolutely entertain a relocation of this club. And this is not — we're not threatening — this is just reality, that the NHL has made it very clear that this has to move forward or else we would have to look at other markets.”

The Arizona Coyotes have long been linked to Salt Lake City as a possible relocation destination, should the NHL team not be able to land a new arena in the Phoenix area.

That speculation has heated up in the midst of the latest developments with the franchise's pursuit of a new home.

Scottsdale mayor David Ortega recently came out against the Coyotes' plan for a new arena near his city in northeast Phoenix, indicating that the team wouldn't be able to use water from his city for the proposed arena and land development, should the team win a public auction for the land, creating another wrinkle in the ongoing arena saga for the NHL franchise.

"As it stands today, the fantasy hockey project must move west, away from Scottsdale," Ortega wrote in a statement.

Arizona Coyotes to Salt Lake City relocation speculation reignites

The Coyotes have been linked to Salt Lake City before, and the speculation about the team possibly relocating to Salt Lake City reignited in the wake of Ortega's statement and Smith's social media survey.

Bleacher Report re-ranked the Top 5 relocation options for the Coyotes amid the latest news about the arena saga and had Salt Lake City No. 1 on the list.

Joe Yerdon wrote: "Amazingly, Salt Lake City, Utah has jumped quickly to the top of the list. The owner of the Utah Jazz, Ryan Smith, made it clear that his group not only is interested in bringing the NHL to Utah, but he has a plan in place to either bring a team that wishes to relocate and get a new arena built for them soon or that he's willing to play the long game and go for an expansion franchise. Smith even went so far as to post a survey on Twitter to ask NHL fans in Utah what they'd want the team's nickname to be should one land there. Owners with money to pull it off and a vested interest in bringing the NHL to their city are a surefire way to move to the top of the list and the Smiths are all about doing it. Suppose they were to become the new home for the Coyotes. In that case, they'd have a natural location to have rivalries with Colorado and continue to be rivals with Vegas, albeit in a different division. Having a Salt Lake team in the Central would ease travel for the Avalanche, too. Considering how clear they've been about their desire to land an NHL team, you'd have to think they'd be the favorites, especially because it's not a guarantee the league would expand (although that seems more and more likely as time goes on)."

The Hockey News wrote that "the prospect of the Coyotes relocating is very real."

Ken Campbell wrote of the latest speculation: "Does this mean the Coyotes are doomed? Not necessarily. But even if they're successful in bidding for the land, they have a lot of work to do. One thing we do know, though, is that if they are not, the prospect of the Coyotes relocating is very real."

The Salt Lake Tribune wrote that the Coyotes losing the land auction in northeast Phoenix would be a win for Utah.

Gordon Monson wrote: "Bottom line: If the Coyotes don’t win the auction, curtains may drop on the ice in Phoenix. Therefore and forthwith, enter Salt Lake City. The NHL would prefer the Coyotes stay in Phoenix, and Coyotes ownership wants to stay there, but … if they can’t, they can’t. Back to SLC. Should Smith want to buy the Coyotes? Would they be available to him? The answers are yes and maybe. Any NHL team that has proper ownership, ownership that has vision and that makes solid decisions will succeed. Would the Coyotes — or whatever they would come to be called — thrive in Salt Lake? See the answer above. If Smith has good judgment and is willing to spend more of his money."

A year ago, the CFG Bank Arena reopened its doors after extensive renovations, defying the skeptics who doubted its success. Today, it stands as a beacon of Baltimore’s resurgence and a testament to what can be achieved when the city and the private sector work together to leverage Baltimore’s unique assets and opportunities.

The CFG Bank Arena became a cornerstone of this vision, building on recent nearby investments such as Lexington Market, apartment conversion projects such as Vivo Living and 300 West Fayette, and historic renovations like the Crook Horner Lofts project.

Coyotes say they’re committing to winning a land auction to build an arena in Phoenix

The Arizona Coyotes said Thursday night they’re committed to win a land auction that could pave the way for the NHL club to remain in the Phoenix area after years of arena uncertainty .

The team hopes to buy the 110-acre (445,154 square meter) plot of land on Northwest corner of Scottsdale Road and the Loop 101 in north Phoenix and build a privately funded arena and entertainment district.

The Arizona State Land Department set the auction for June 27 in a legal notice published Thursday. The starting bid is $68.5 million.

“Arizona is our home, and an incredible market where the Coyotes belong,” owner Alex Meruelo said in a statement. “This district would provide a beautiful home for the Arizona Coyotes for decades to come. Our loyal fans deserve this vibrant gathering place that would serve as a landmark to create lifelong memories.”

The Coyotes are nearing the end of their second season at a 5,000-seat rink on Arizona State’s campus while looking for a long-term solution. NHL Players’ Association executive director Marty Walsh has voiced concern about being the second tenant in that small of a building, saying several deadlines have passed.

This plan is another ray of hope. The Coyotes plan to construct a 17,000-seat arena along with a new practice facility, a concert venue, restaurants and more.

Commissioner Gary Bettman in an interview with The Associated Press last month said Meruelo was working on the situation.

“It’s hard work, and he’s committed to it,” Bettman said, declining to put a deadline on the process. “I think sooner rather than later. I think people are craving certainty. And we are, too, but this isn’t a 60-minute game where the light goes on and the game’s over. He’s working on it. We still have some time.”

Meruelo and president and CEO Xavier Gutierrez over the past year have shifted focus to an arena plan that would not require voter approval, after a referendum was rejected by Tempe voters.

“We are thrilled by the prospects of building this historic development for Arizona Coyotes fans and fans in waiting,” Gutierrez said. “This is more than just an arena project — it is a best-in-class urban redevelopment project that would transform a perfectly located parcel of land into an Arizona landmark, and create a vibrant neighborhood for individuals to live, work and play.”
