Who funds the FAA? You, whenever you fly

The Airport and Airway Trust Fund collects revenue from air travel-related taxes and uses it to fund the FAA. In FY 2022, passenger taxes were 71.3% of AATF revenue — but funding depends on congressional extensions for the AATF.

Data Methodology

The Census Bureau’s Population and Housing Estimates Program (PEP) data by county includes details like counts by age, race, or ethnicity and goes back for decades. But how the Census Bureau reported and grouped those populations changed over time.

Race categories

Users will notice that the race categories change depending on the years selected in this interactive tool. This occurs because the Census Bureau has changed the race and ethnicity categories it makes available. To allow for comparisons over time, the race categories change depending on the earliest year selected in the comparison tool.

If the earliest year selected in the tool is from before 1990, the data only includes three race categories: 'white', 'Black', and 'other'. As a result, any comparison that includes data from before 1990 only includes these three race categories. Race categories other than 'Black' and 'white' are included in the 'other' race category for years after 1990 when comparing to pre-1990 data.

Any comparison where the earliest year is between 1990 and 1999 includes two additional categories: 'American Indian/Alaska Native' and 'Asian or Pacific Islander.' Separate reporting for 'Asian' and 'Hawaiian Native/Pacific Islander' are combined for years after 2000 when the comparison year is in the 1990s.

Data from 2000 onward considers 'Asian' and 'Hawaiian Native/Pacific Islander' as separate groups and also includes the 'multiracial' category. These categories do not exist for earlier years and do not appear in comparisons in this tool if a year prior to 2000 is selected. Prior to 2000, the Census Bureau did not separately identify people who were two or more races. All persons were grouped into singular race categories. In 2000, the Census added the 'Two or more races' category to the data. The Census Bureau states that the number of people in the separate race categories (i.e., 'white', 'Black', etc.) was impacted by this change as some people who would have previously been grouped within a single race category were grouped into the two or more category with the change. Pre-2000 and post-2000 data comparisons will result in lower values for the separate race categories in proportion to the 'two or more race' population.

Ethnicity categories

In addition to the changes in race categories over time, the Hispanic ethnicity also became available at the county level beginning in 1990. People of Hispanic ethnicity may be of any race. To consider Hispanic people as a distinct group, the tool above defaults to excluding Hispanic people from the race categories when the comparison years selected are both from 1990 and later. The resulting race/ethnicity comparison groups are: "Black, non-Hispanic", "white, non-Hispanic", "American Indian/Alaska Native, non-Hispanic", "Asian or Pacific Islander, non-Hispanic" and "Hispanic". There is also an option for users to hide the distinct Hispanic ethnicity, which then allocates Hispanic people to their designated race category.

Census reporting and update cycle

The Census Bureau releases annual provisional population estimates based on the previous decennial census and other data on births, deaths, and migration/immigration. Every decade, the Bureau reconciles these estimates and releases final data.

These provisional estimates are 'postcensal estimates', and the final estimates are 'intercensal estimates'. USAFacts used the final intercensal estimates for 1970 through 2009 and the provisional postcensal estimates for 2010 and after.

The most recent county-level data available by age, race, sex, and ethnicity are the Vintage 2020 Population Estimates (census.gov) for 2010 to 2019 and the Vintage 2022 Population Estimates (census.gov) for 2020 through 2022. We will update this experience, including the 2010-2019 estimates, when the Bureau releases county-level 2010-2020 intercensal estimates by age, sex, race, and ethnicity.

Use caution when interpreting population changes that use different estimate vintages. The 2010-2020 postcensal estimates are known to underestimate the population by about 1% nationally. This underestimate is, effectively, zero for 2010 and grows each year to reach 1% by 2020. The estimate years differ from the base 2010 decennial census; underestimates will be resolved in 2023 when the Census Bureau releases its 2010-2020 intercensal estimates.

Geography changes

In 2022, the Census Bureau accepted a new county-equivalent map for the state of Connecticut to better reflect the actual governance system in the state. This resulted in a new map that divides the state into 9 counties in place of the prior 8-county map. This presents a significant hurdle for providing context to Connecticut's state population changes over time. The Census Bureau, in addressing this concern, has indicated that they will release alternative population estimates for Connecticut for the past 5 years using the more recent 9-county designations. USAFACTS will be paying attention to those releases to determine if those results can be combined with these other data to provide a time series of population change for the new counties. While this is being determined, we have inserted the data from the Vintage 2021 Population Estimates (census.gov) for reporting for Connecticut at the county level, that align to the old, 8-county system to provide that context over time. State and National numbers use the 2022 Vintage estimates and we will continue to use the most recent estimates for the state and nation even when older data must be substituted for the county-level data. Until some additional data becomes available and is evaluated, we will limit Connecticut's county-level data to 2021.

What The New Census Data Shows About Race Depends On How You Look At It

Connie Hanzhang Jin

Ruth Talbot

Hansi Lo Wang - Square

Hansi Lo Wang

Over the past decade, the United States continued to grow more racially and ethnically diverse, according to the results of last year's national head count that the U.S. Census Bureau released this week.

There are many ways to slice the data and change how the demographic snapshot looks .

Since the 2000 count, participants have been able to check off more than one box when answering the race question on census forms . But breakdowns of the country's racial and ethnic makeup often don't reflect a multiracial population that has increased by 276% since the 2010 census . They focus instead on racial groups that are made up of people who marked only one box, with multiracial people sometimes lumped together in a catchall group.

Using the new 2020 census results, here's what a breakdown with a catchall group for multiracial people looks like:

But a different kind of breakdown can show how racial groups are becoming more heterogeneous. This graphic shows the number of people who said they identified with each race, regardless of how many races they chose. For example, if a person said they identified as Black and Asian, they would appear in both racial categories.

And there are other ways, of course, to slice the data, including incorporating people who identify as Hispanic or Latino — and who, according to federal standards , can be of any race — into the different racial groups.

To make matters more complicated, research by the Census Bureau has shown that how some people self-report their racial and ethnic identity can change from census to census.

Any analysis of this data represents a different way of understanding race and ethnicity in the U.S., where count after count people have made clear that their identities often cannot fit neatly into check boxes on census forms.

United States population by race

The table below shows United States's population by race.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Racial / Ethnic makeup of United States

Things to know.

Of the 5 race categories (excluding ethnicity) identified by the Census Bureau, namely American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African American, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander and White; United States has a population in all of the race categories.

This confirms that United States's population has become increasingly diverse.

The percent distribution of United States population by race (across all racial categories recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau): 68.17% are White, 12.55% are Black or African American, 0.83% are American Indian and Alaska Native, 5.70% are Asian, 0.19% are Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, 5.58% are some other race and 6.99% are multiracial.

How to present demographic data in research

Demographic infographic faq.

Demographic data refers to information about the characteristics of a population. Demographic data is used to analyze and describe the composition of a population, and it plays a crucial role in various fields, including sociology, economics, marketing, public health and government planning.

These data are usually collected through surveys, censuses and other research methods to provide insights into the characteristics and trends of a population. Analyzing demographic data is valuable for businesses, governments, researchers and policymakers as it helps them make informed decisions, tailor services and understand the dynamics of a given population.

Demographic information allows for in-depth analysis of populations, and many areas fall under this umbrella. The most common types of demographics include:

  • Race and ethnicity
  • Sex and gender identity
  • Marital status
  • Family size
  • Homeownership
  • Health status

Of these, the first three (age, race/ethnicity and sex/gender identity) are the most commonly used in demographic infographics, but all of those areas and more can be helpful in understanding groups of people.

Demographic Infographic Template Customer Satisfaction Survey

The origin of “demographics” comes from the Greek word for people ( demos ), but especially in areas related to business, like the above example, demographic information can also be applied to organizations and customers. This can include things like:

  • Headquarters
  • Number of employees
  • Years in operation
  • Number of locations

Applying demographics to sets of data is the best way for marketers to generate actionable information they can use to craft their next campaign, and it’s also a popular type of visual content, particularly when it means sharing original data or a new take on existing data.

The data used for your demographic infographic could come from your internal analytics or it could be powered by an original survey created to poll people about a specific topic.

Demographic Infographic Template Family Census Data

Population statistics tell us that about 328 million people live in the United States. By itself, that information isn’t especially interesting. However, if we explore demographics published by the U.S. Census Bureau , there’s a lot we can learn, as the above demographic infographic illustrates.

In addition to what is revealed in the above template, Census data tells us the following:

  • About 22% of Americans are under the age of 18.
  • The median age is 38.5 years.
  • Nearly 90% of adults over 25 have at least a high school education.
  • Fewer than 7% of U.S. adults are military veterans.
  • About 14% of people living in the U.S. weren’t born in the country.

Visualizing the demographic data you’ve collected is simple using Venngage’s Infographic Maker . You can manually input the data or import it from Google Sheets or Excel. Which type of graph or chart is best depends on the information itself.

For example, using our Census data, we can split the U.S. adult population (over 25) into nine segments by educational attainment. These segments vary dramatically in size, and regardless of how large any would be, nine is too many for a pie chart because it’s hard to read.

You can read our blog to learn more about best practices for choosing charts for your data or watch our short guide below, but a good way to learn is to play around with different types of charts and graphs and see which tells the story most effectively.

At times, a single chart, graph or visualization is best, particularly when telling a very focused story, as this example illustrates. It involves just one data point, the age-based demographics of social media users.

Demographic Infographic Template Social Media Bubble

At other times, it’s necessary to visualize many demographic segments in one infographic, and good demographic data lends itself well to multiple types of data visualization, such as in the demographic infographic example below.

City demographic infographic template

National and global demographic data tell us very broad-strokes highlights of a story, but zooming into the local or city level hits home in a way macro data simply can’t do.

Whether for internal or external audiences, city demographic infographics can reveal details about regional populations, as in the example below.

Social media channels are crucial for marketers, as these platforms can help generate tons of internal data, and for most marketers, social channels are among their most effective methods of reaching readers.

Presenting demographic data in research involves effectively communicating the key characteristics of the study population. Here are some guidelines on how to present demographic data:

  • Start by identifying and defining the demographic variables that are relevant to your study. Common demographic variables include age, gender, ethnicity, education level, income, marital status and occupation.
  • Gather accurate and complete demographic information from your study participants. Ensure that your data collection methods are reliable and that you have obtained consent to collect this information.
  • Clean the data by checking for errors, missing values or outliers. Organize the data in a format that is suitable for analysis and presentation. Use appropriate statistical measures to summarize the data, such as mean, median, mode and standard deviation for numerical variables.
  • Create descriptive statistics for each demographic variable. This might include frequency distributions, percentages and summary statistics. For categorical variables, you can create bar charts or pie charts to visually represent the distribution.
  • If your study involves multiple groups or subgroups, conduct subgroup analyses to explore variations in demographics. For example, compare demographic characteristics across different age groups or between different study locations.
  • Present the demographic data in tables and graphs to make it visually accessible. Tables can be used to show detailed numerical information, while graphs (e.g., bar charts, pie charts) can provide a quick visual overview of the distribution of demographic variables.
  • Include a brief discussion or interpretation of the demographic data. Consider how the demographic characteristics may influence your research findings or contribute to a better understanding of your study population.
  • When presenting demographic data, ensure that individual participants remain anonymous. Avoid including any personally identifiable information in your presentation to protect participant privacy.
  • Be aware of potential biases in your sample and consider how these biases may impact the generalizability of your findings. If applicable, discuss any limitations related to the representativeness of your sample.
  • Lastly, Incorporate relevant demographic information into the results section of your research paper or presentation. Additionally, discuss the implications of demographic findings in the discussion section, especially if they have relevance to the interpretation of your study results.

Remember that the presentation of demographic data should align with the overall goals and objectives of your research study. The goal is to make the information easily accessible, understandable, and relevant to your research questions and findings.

Do you have more questions about demographic infographics? We can help.

1. How do I come up with demographic infographic ideas?

Often, demographic comparisons themselves can serve as topic ideas for a demographic infographic and in those cases, whether to include certain demographic information will be obvious. For example, if you’re creating a buyer persona demographic infographic, it’s clear that age and gender will be two important demographic distinctions to make.

However, there are times when you won’t there’s a story until you dive into the data. Depending on the size of your data set, you can use Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel to create pivot tables that let you analyze your data in detail, assuming your data is in a spreadsheet format.

Another way of doing this is sorting your data by columns and either counting manually or using the built-in functions of your spreadsheet program, but that’s much less efficient than using pivot tables.

2. How can I visualize population?

Population can be visualized through a variety of charts, graphs, maps, tables and icons, and the ideal method depends on the data itself. At times, it’s necessary to use a mix of visualizations if you’re dealing with complex population demographics or very large numbers.

Pie charts, maps, line charts, icons, bar charts and more can all help you visualize population.

3. How do I make an infographic for age demographics?

Age is among the most frequently used demographic slices in data analysis, but there are many ways of thinking about and visualizing age demographics in infographic design.

One way to make an infographic for age demographics is by using a pie or donut chart to reveal how people’s ages are split in a single population group. When the number of age ranges is high, a bar chart may be more appropriate.

Age demographics are also useful in creating generational comparison infographics where two or more generational groups are compared across a range of categories.

4. Where can I find demographic infographic data?

If you don’t have demographic information on hand, such as survey data or information about your customers, clients or users, or you’re looking for demographic information about populations in general, there are many free resources. Here’s a look at some of our favorites:

  • U.S. Census Bureau
  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
  • Pew Research Center

In summary: Demographics can spark internal learning and super-charge engagement of published visual content

The power of visual content has been well-established, and infographics are among the most effective methods of creating content. In fact, studies have shown that infographics get shared at about three times the rate of any other piece of content.

One big reason for that is that people are drawn to well-designed data that tells a cohesive and engaging story. When that story is powered by demographic data, it can help connect readers in a deep and meaningful way.

If you can create original, interesting findings from demographic data, your infographics will be incredibly authoritative, as they’ll be the only word on the subject.

Automatically import your data directly into Venngage’s Infographic Maker and get to work creating powerful, engaging and thought-provoking demographic infographics today.

U.S. centenarian population is projected to quadruple over the next 30 years

The number of Americans ages 100 and older is projected to more than quadruple over the next three decades, from an estimated 101,000 in 2024 to about 422,000 in 2054, according to projections from the U.S. Census Bureau. Centenarians currently make up just 0.03% of the overall U.S. population, and they are expected to reach 0.1% in 2054.

A line chart showing that the U.S. centenarians projected to quadruple in number by 2054.

The number of centenarians in the United States has steadily ticked up since 1950, when the Census Bureau estimates there were just 2,300 Americans ages 100 and older. (The Census Bureau uses calculated estimates for years prior to the 1990 census because it has identified large errors in the census counts of centenarians for those years.)

In the last three decades alone, the U.S. centenarian population has nearly tripled. The 1990 census counted around 37,000 centenarians in the country.

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to understand how the population of Americans ages 100 and older looks today, and how it is expected to change in the next 30 years. U.S. population estimates come from the U.S. Census Bureau , and global projections are drawn from the United Nations’ population projections under its medium variant scenario .

All racial groups are single-race and non-Hispanic. Hispanics are of any race.

Today, women and White adults make up the vast majority of Americans in their 100s. This trend is largely projected to continue, though their shares will decrease:

A bar chart showing that the vast majority of Americans in their 100s are women, White.

  • In 2024, 78% of centenarians are women, and 22% are men. In 30 years, women are expected to make up 68% of those ages 100 and older, while 32% will be men.
  • 77% of today’s centenarians are White. Far fewer are Black (8%), Asian (7%) or Hispanic (6%). And 1% or fewer are multiracial; American Indian or Alaska Native; or Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander. By 2054, White and Asian adults are projected to make up smaller shares of centenarians (72% and 5%, respectively), while the shares who are Hispanic (11%) or Black (10%) will be larger. (All racial categories here are single-race and non-Hispanic. Hispanics are of any race.)

The U.S. population overall is expected to trend older in the coming decades as life expectancies increase and the birth rate declines. There are currently roughly 62 million adults ages 65 and older living in the U.S., accounting for 18% of the population. By 2054, 84 million adults ages 65 and older will make up an estimated 23% of the population.

Even as the 65-and-older population continues to grow over the next 30 years, those in their 100s are projected to roughly double as a percentage of that age group, increasing from 0.2% of all older Americans in 2024 to 0.5% in 2054.

Centenarians around the world

A chart showing the five countries with the largest centenarian populations.

The world is home to an estimated 722,000 centenarians, according to the United Nations’ population projections for 2024. The U.S. centenarian population is the world’s second largest – the UN estimates it at 108,000, slightly larger than the Census Bureau’s estimate.

Japan is the country with the greatest number of people in their 100s, at 146,000. China (60,000), India (48,000) and Thailand (38,000) round out the top five.

In each of these countries, centenarians make up less than 1% of the overall population, but combined, they account for more than half (55%) of the world’s population ages 100 and older.

Looked at another way, centenarians make up a bigger proportion of the total population in Japan, Thailand and the U.S., and smaller shares in China and India, which have large but relatively young populations. There are about 12 centenarians for every 10,000 people in Japan, five for every 10,000 in Thailand and three for every 10,000 in the U.S. That compares with fewer than one centenarian for every 10,000 people in China and India.

By 2054, the global centenarian population is projected to grow to nearly 4 million. China is expected to have the largest number of centenarians, with 767,000, followed by the U.S., India, Japan and Thailand. As a proportion, centenarians are projected to account for about 49 out of every 10,000 people in Thailand, 40 of every 10,000 in Japan and 14 of every 10,000 in the U.S. Six out of every 10,000 people in China will be centenarians, as will about two of every 10,000 in India.

A map showing that publics in North America, Europe and Asia are projected to see large growth in centenarian populations by 2054.
