Though it may not be possible to get a proper job just yet, there are still ways for you to earn some spending money while helping your family and community. With a little creative thinking, you can find the perfect money making opportunity for you. Here's how to look to parents, neighbors, and friends not for handouts, but for opportunity.

Earning Money From Your Parents

Step 1 Request an allowance.

 • Negotiate a fair amount of money for the work that you do. Don't expect them to pay you $/£20 for nothing. They may expect you to complete a few more household chores since they are paying you regularly.
 • Think about how you will justify this allowance. Why do you need it? Why do you deserve it? Be prepared to give your parents good reasons if asked.
 • Common tasks that parents pay their children allowance to complete include: cleaning your room, emptying and loading the dishwasher, vacuuming, washing and folding laundry, and dusting. [1] X Research source

Step 2 Offer to complete special tasks.

 • If your parents send you into a store to pick up a few items, ask them if you can have the change. If they expect the money back, ask them can you keep the coins. Pennies, pounds and other coins quickly add up.

Step 5 Grow your savings.

Earning Money from Your Community

Step 1 Start a neighborhood business.

 • Taking care of lawns. You can mow them, rake leaves, clean up debris, and shovel snow. Charge different prices based on the size of the yard and the size of the job. Remember, always be fair and reasonable. [2] X Research source
 • Pet walking and pet sitting. Offer to walk dogs for your neighbors, or feed their cats or dogs when they go out of town. If you pet sit, you can charge by the day. Just make sure you like animals because pet sitting can get a little dirty.
 • Dog washing. Wash dogs for your neighbors, and even brush them afterwards.
 • Washing cars. Wash the outsides of cars, and even clean the insides, too. If you get a few friends together, you can hold a community car wash.
 • Spray painting numbers on curbs. This could help emergency vehicles find homes if the numbers are not obvious on the house or mailbox. All you'd need is a couple of cans of spray paint and a number stencil.

Step 2 Babysit.

 • Think of reasons why you are qualified for babysitting. Most parents will want to know that you are responsible and have worked with children before. If possible, put together references of people you have babysat for before, or family members who have watched you babysit younger cousins during family events.
 • Make sure you are prepared for babysitting. It is not an easy job, but a huge responsibility. You are responsible for the safety and well-being of the child while they are under your care. If you're not comfortable with that, find an alternate job.

Step 3 Be an all-around handy person.

 • You might want to use your computer to print up fliers or business cards to distribute around the community. On the flier or business card, describe who you are, what you are offering to do, and how to contact you.
 • Go door to door to introduce yourself. When you first start a business, you need to promote it. In addition to fliers, try going around to the houses in your neighborhood to introduce yourself. People might be more willing to hire you if they see your face and meet. [3] X Research source
 • Don't be discouraged if people say no.

Making Money Other Ways

Step 1 Sell unwanted items.

 • Get your parents to help you sell it on eBay or Craigslist. You can sell everything from clothes to toys on there.
 • Sell it at school if its allowed. Your peers will be into similar things and just because you are finished with something does not mean that someone else wont want it. [4] X Research source
 • Take your clothes and shoes to a consignment shop. Consignment shops pay money for quality, second-hand items. Some consignment shops will even take toys. Make sure the items are in good quality so you get the best price.
 • Sell your old video games and video game systems back to gaming stores. Or try selling them on eBay or Amazon.
 • Have a yard sale. This might not be easy since your parents will have to do a lot of work, but maybe you can convince them to share some of the profits from their sales if you do a lot of the organizing work. [5] X Research source

Step 2 Tutor younger students.

 • Offer your musical services for a fee at local events. Play the piano at a reception, play the guitar at a wedding, or play the violin at a local festival.

Step 4 Sell individual skills.

 • If you're good at drawing and painting, think about painting faces at birthday parties and other events for a small fee. [6] X Research source

Step 5 Provide holiday-themed work.

30 Easy Ways to Earn Extra Pocket Money (for Kids & Adults)

by Saeed - Verified & Updated November 1, 2023 (This post may contain affiliate links.)

Pocket Money

If you are just looking to earn a few extra fun dollars on the side, these are some great ideas you can try.

None of them are intended to make you rich – but they are really fun things that you can try to earn cash while meeting people and developing new skills.

Most of those listed are free to begin, meaning your creativity, time and effort are all you will need to get started.

Remember, this is a guide only. All the approximate numbers given are a guide only, and you may find that you have more or less success with certain tactics.

Table of Contents

A. Mobile Gigs

Your smartphone opens a huge number of opportunities for you to make money at times when you might be unproductive, commuting, or wasting time.

Gigwalk is one example of a program you can use, posting tasks that range in payment between $3 and $90 that you can complete while you’re out.

Tasks include shopping, rating, completing store surveys, taking photos, testing mobile apps, etc. To take part, you just need an iPhone or Android device.

You can also try Field Agent and Easy Shift, which pays in items like gift cards and has easy to find tasks to complete.

 • CheckPoints
 • Field Agent

B. Incentivized Freebie Websites

Incentivized Freebie Websites (IFW) (also known as GPT – Get Paid To), are both loved and hated by some.

IFW sites are basically online rewards programs that reward you for taking certain actions. It can be taking a survey, visiting a website, watching a video, signing up for a trial offer,…

And there are many of them around. Sifting through them to find the ones that are legit and actually pay can be a tedious task.

I have been using a number of IFWs for years and I can say that they are a great source for earning little pocket change and free gift cards.

 • QuickRewards
 • Vindale Research

C. Listen to Music

If you love listening to and discovering new music, there are ways you can make a little money while doing so.

Some sites will allow you to review and rate new releases.

Generally reviews begin at about 5 cents, but as you gain a profile and background you can move up and earn a bit more.

You stand to earn $30 to $40 a month in extra pocket money for something you might be doing anyway!

 • Slicethepie

D. Complete Paid Surveys

Customer feedback is a valuable resource for any business, and they get the feedback by paying market research companies to conduct surveys for them.

And to give people an incentive to participate, the market research companies pay people with some of the money they get from companies and businesses.

You can sign up for multiple websites to try your luck and see which type work best for you.

Once signed up with a site, you will usually receive emails with surveys available for completion and details of what you will earn.

Some surveys take under a minute, others can be much longer or multi-stage.

Generally, payment per survey is relatively small (between $1 and $5) but rises with more complex studies. Some companies offer gift cards or incentives in lieu of cash.

Surveys are definitely not a source of income you can rely on entirely, but they can bring you a nice sum of pocket money each month depending on how many you complete.

 • SurveySavvy
 • PineConeResearch
 • Global Test Market

E. Microjobs

As more and more people begin to work from home, the “microjobs” or freelance, single-job marketplace is growing bigger every day.

There are many jobs you can complete and plenty of places to find them.

In many cases, you can list your available services or apply for available jobs. TaskRabbit even provides offline jobs for you to complete.

Generally, these small jobs pay between $5 and $50 and can often be completed within an hour.

F. Enter Competitions

In your spare time, it can be worthwhile to enter the free contests and competitions that are often offered by companies and retailers as a promotion.

Generally, you can enter by just providing a little bit of information, and the results can pay off hugely if you’re lucky.

You don’t have to spend a lot of time looking for these contest. There are many sites that aggregate information on local deals, coupons and contests. Sign up and enter whatever catches your eye, and you stand to make a lot.

Remember, this is more of a fun shot-in-the-dark than something you can depend on for usable income.

When getting started, you might consider setting up a separate email account to ensure that you don’t receive too many notifications or newsletters in your regular inbox.

 • SweepsAdvantage
 • UltraContest

G. Pay to Click Earning

If you spend a lot of time online, getting paid to click on advertisements might be a great option for you!

Generally, you will be required to click on advertisements and view them.

Each click takes only a few seconds, and the earnings per click are very low. If, however, you are willing to dedicate time while you listen to music or watch TV, you stand to earn a few extra dollars without much mental or physical effort.

I should also mention that most paid to click sites have evolved to offer other opportunities as well.

For example, InboxDollars, started as a site where they would pay members to click on the ads in their newsletter emails. But these days, InboxDollars is a complete online rewards program where you can earn by doing a variety of stuff, like taking surveys, playing games, shopping, etc.

 • InboxDollars
 • SendEarnings

H. FreeLancing

Freelancing has been growing as a profession immensely for the past few years.

There are tons of different things you can do as a freelancer, from writing simple articles to designing logos, to building websites and more.

You normally set your own prices, and can work from anywhere, anytime.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Pocket Money

Introduction.

Importance of Pocket Money

Pocket money helps children learn about budgeting and saving. It teaches them the value of money and encourages them to make wise spending decisions.

Managing Pocket Money

Children should be guided on how to manage their pocket money. They can save part of it, spend some on their needs, and maybe donate a portion to charity.

In conclusion, pocket money is a tool to prepare children for the financial realities of adulthood.

250 Words Essay on Pocket Money

The concept of pocket money.

Pocket money, a concept as old as money itself, is an important tool in a young person’s journey towards financial literacy. It is essentially a small amount of money given to children by their parents or guardians on a regular basis.

The Importance of Pocket Money

Pocket money plays a vital role in shaping a person’s understanding of money management. It teaches the value of money and the importance of budgeting, saving, and making informed financial decisions. It also fosters a sense of responsibility, as one has to manage their own funds and prioritize their spending based on needs and wants.

Pocket Money and Financial Independence

Financial independence is an essential life skill that begins with managing pocket money. It’s a stepping stone towards understanding the complexities of the financial world. It empowers youngsters to make their own spending decisions, consequently teaching them about the repercussions of poor financial choices.

Potential Downsides

Despite its benefits, pocket money can also have potential downsides. If not properly guided, children may develop poor spending habits or a sense of entitlement. It’s therefore crucial for parents to provide guidance and set boundaries around the use of pocket money.

In conclusion, pocket money serves as a practical tool for teaching financial literacy from a young age. It’s a concept that, when used properly, can cultivate financial independence and responsible financial habits. However, it requires careful guidance to ensure it fosters positive attitudes towards money management.

500 Words Essay on Pocket Money

Pocket money, often considered a simple financial tool, is a profound concept that holds the potential to shape an individual’s financial understanding and habits. It is a small amount of money given to children by their parents or guardians on a regular basis. The concept of pocket money is not just about providing financial support for minor expenses, but it is a practical way to teach young people about the value of money and financial responsibility.

The Significance of Pocket Money

Pocket money serves as an essential learning tool for young adults, especially college students, who are at a critical juncture of their life. It helps them understand the concept of budgeting, saving, and spending wisely. By managing their own pocket money, they gain insights into the financial world, which is crucial for their future independence.

Moreover, pocket money can also help in fostering a sense of responsibility. When students manage their own money, they understand the importance of making wise choices and the consequences of their financial decisions. They learn to prioritize their needs and wants, which is a critical life skill.

The Challenges of Pocket Money

Despite its numerous benefits, pocket money comes with its own set of challenges. The primary issue is determining the right amount. Too little pocket money could leave students struggling to cover their basic needs, while too much could lead to reckless spending and a lack of appreciation for the value of money.

Furthermore, the misuse of pocket money is another concern. Without proper guidance, students might spend their money on unnecessary items or develop unhealthy habits, such as gambling. Therefore, it is crucial for parents and guardians to provide guidance and monitor the usage of pocket money.

Strategies for Effective Use of Pocket Money

To ensure the effective use of pocket money, it’s essential to implement strategies that promote responsible financial behavior. One effective method is to encourage students to save a certain percentage of their pocket money. This not only helps them accumulate savings but also instills a habit of saving.

Another important strategy is to involve students in budgeting. They should be encouraged to plan their expenditures, which will help them understand their spending patterns and control impulsive buying.

Lastly, it’s important to have open conversations about money. Discussing financial matters, such as the importance of saving, the consequences of debt, and the significance of investing, can help students develop a healthy relationship with money.

In conclusion, pocket money is a powerful tool that can shape a student’s financial behavior and understanding. Despite the challenges it presents, with the right strategies and guidance, it can be used effectively to instill financial responsibility and independence in students. The lessons learned from managing pocket money are invaluable, and they lay the groundwork for sound financial habits in adulthood.

15 Ways to Earn Extra Pocket Money as a Student

by Emilie Schleif | Ideas

Students trying to earn extra pocket money in school

Jul 26, 2021

As a student, there are times you wish you had money to do something for yourself. Unfortunately, it can be hard to get extra cash apart from the one you get from your parents. But you can still get that money if you know what you’re doing. There are several opportunities to make money online and offline. So, we’re going to show you the process. Here are ways to earn extra pocket money as a student.

1. Freelancing

Different schools of thought predict that the future of work is freelancing. Businesses want to increase efficiency by outsourcing instead of hiring full-time staff. You can make plenty of money as a student by working as a freelancer .

There are several websites online you can start from which already have clients. In only five minutes, you can sign up with sites like fiverr.com, guru.com, freelancer.com, and upwork.com. You can create profiles for skills like writing, animation, design, and video editing. Clients pay after work is confirmed, and you can withdraw twice or once a month to your bank account.

2. Tutoring

If you’re an expert at something, someone out there needs your knowledge. They’re starting up and don’t want to go through the tedious learning curve. Offering online tutoring can be lucrative if you know a subject well. You can join third-party sites udemy.com and skillshare.com. Upload your video, audio, infographic, and text content to attract students.

You can also offer zoom or live tutoring sessions and use social media for advertising it. Build your student base and start growing your influence. Tutoring is good because it challenges you to be better and more focused.

3. Taking and Selling Photographs

Social media managers and digital marketers all make use of images for their work. Individuals also need images for so many things. Even if they have some pictures, they will still need more to create their content. If you’re good at photography, this is one of the best ways to earn extra pocket money as a student [ 1 ]. You can sell the same image to different people or as exclusive content.

Contact people who are planning an event and serve as an official photographer. Shutterstock.com allows photographers to upload their work and sell it. On unsplash.com, you can also showcase some of your best photos for people to download for free, and at the same time, let them know you’re available for hire. The opportunity to make money from photography is endless.

4. Work At Campus Café

Working as a Barista in a Cafe

If you love serving people, you can try out working at the campus café. You don’t have to wait for them to fill a vacancy; try approaching them to see if they need someone. Working at a café on the campus makes it easy to manage work and classroom activities.

You will also learn essential business skills in customer service and management. This will help you in case you hope to start a business in the future. Apart from getting paid by the café owner, you’ll also get tips if you’re nice.

If you have access to a vehicle, go on and sign up with the app and start driving. If you don’t have a car, you can drive for someone and split the profit based on agreements. You can also approach a friend who has a car and bargain with them.

6. Sell Old Notes and Textbooks

On the campus, notes are gold. When you’re in your second year, students in the first year will find your old notes valuable. That’s why you should never throw them away. Many students are doing this already and making good money from it [ 2 ].

7. Sign Up For Extras on Film and TV Productions

Schooling near Hollywood, New York, or places where they make movies provides enormous opportunities. It’s one of the coolest ways to earn extra pocket money as a student. Filmmakers are always in need of people to play crowd scenes in their movies.

Search online or in-person for such audition notices and sign up. Apart from the money they will pay you, you’re also getting credit for the work. Who knows, someone might even notice your talent and give you a better role next time.

9. Start and Run Your Own Blog

Blogs provide free information that makes life easier for readers. If you’re good at writing and you have expertise on a subject, start a blog. Update the blog once a week or so to keep the viewers engaged. Collect their details like email and phone numbers to send them product offers.

10. Social Media Content Creator

Managing a social media account is impossible without content. That’s why businesses and individuals need social media content creators. You can make money by working as a virtual social media content creator and manager.

The good news is you don’t even need to worry about content ideas. Just look for a similar business with an active social presence and get ideas from them. You’re not going to copy and paste; look at what they’re doing and create a version from your angle. Social media content creators help engage followers. You’re going to learn a lot from your job to improve your skills and talent.

11. Start E-Commerce Store

Start an e-commerce business to earn extra money

More people now prefer to shop online instead of in physical stores. You can join the e-commerce industry that is growing in billions of dollars every year. All you need is to decide which product you want to sell and then start looking for customers.

You can sign up with sites like shopify.com that provide you with all the tools you need to sell in one place ( 3 ). Many people also create stores on social media like Facebook and Instagram to sell. All you need is a good shipping partner to turn your shop into a goldmine.

12. Become a Video Editor

Video is the future of marketing. That’s why almost every company now wants to create a video to promote their business. Learn how to use software like Adobe Premiere and after effects, and start editing for money. The demand for video editors is increasing, so take advantage of it.

13. Buy and Sell Crypto

One of the most exciting ways to earn extra pocket money as a student without stress is crypto. All you need to do this job is a smartphone, and you’re good to go. Create a wallet and start buying cryptocurrencies like Ethereum and Bitcoin. When the price is high, sell it off and keep the difference. When prices fall, buy again and repeat.

Students worldwide have turned the cryptocurrency business into a fortune, and you, too, can do it. However, you will perform better if you learn and improve your knowledge about it.

14. Provide Services for Wealthy Kids

Many rich kids on campus will be too lazy to do things they’re supposed to do. These kids are willing to pay you to run errands for them. Look for a rich kid and attach yourself to them. You’re not going to parties with them; you’ll be working as their assistant. You can wash their car, help them with their laundry, and cook to earn extra pocket money.

You can also help them organize events and take away the stress from them. Many rich kids will also need help with their assignments and notes. You can provide all these services in exchange for cash. Build a relationship with the rich kid now because you might need them after you graduate.

15. Write Homework and Assignments

High school kids need help with their homework. College students have assignments they need to complete. Some of these people can’t achieve these projects. If you’re an above-average student, you can help them with the assignment in exchange for cash. You can approach people in the church or neighborhood, or college to get such a job.

There are websites like homeworkmarket.com, chegg.com, tutor.com, you can create a profile. Once you update your information, you can start doing homework for others and get paid.

Students need to make money to solve many of their needs. But getting a full-time job may be impossible. Instead, you can make money online or work part-time as a student. Know what you’re good at, create a profile, and start selling for cash.

Top 20 best books on american history, ways for teenagers to make pocket money essay sample, example.

Admin

Not that I was materialistic: money was a symbol of freedom. Be it a date with a girlfriend, a new video game I wanted to buy, a pair of sneakers, or anything else, I needed money desperately. And, as any teenager, I could not ask my parents for it that easily: first of all, I did not want to be a freeloader (although I was–all kids are, until a certain age), and secondly, I did not want to involve my parents in things I was into. So, at some point, I realized I needed to start making my own money. Even today, I think this was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Why? Mostly because I learned there is no such thing as easy money. When you are given some, you take it easy. When you earn some, you start valuing every dollar. So, I tried a number of legal ways to earn money, and here is what I did.

I always liked to draw. I never attended any art school, and no one taught it to me, but I remember myself with a pencil in my hands since the age of four. Starting from doodles and ugly stuff, I gradually learned the basics of composition, sketching, and shading. I bought a book on anatomy for painters, and tried copying muscles, bones, and tissues from there. I learned to draw human bodies–although facial features are something I cannot draw well enough, even today. Anyways, I figured out I could earn money by drawing. Given that my surrounding consisted mostly of guys, the top things for me to draw was concept art with half-naked women or fully-armored fantasy/science-fiction warriors. Depending on the complexity of work done, I charged people up to five dollars per poster. I even participated in several contests, but I never won anything.

Another way I tried to make money was working as a courier. You have probably seen guys like me in movies: a teenager boy on an old bike throwing newspapers anywhere but where he is supposed to. Well, that was me. I did my best for several months, but I still gave up in the end. I hated it. Waking up early in the morning, getting out regardless of the weather outside, riding back and forth past barking dogs–I think I experienced all the stereotypes about delivery boys. And it did not pay well either. After this job, I tried a plethora of other ones: washing cars, working at my local grocery store, helping people clean their garages or walk their dogs, and so on. It was more fun than throwing newspapers around because I could meet new people, many of which were nice.

Another thing I did was tutoring. I was pretty good at math, so I helped younger children in the neighborhood to get on track–and their grateful parents were kind to pay me for this. And although I am sure I had little talent in teaching, I like to think I helped someone.

Anyways, there are many ways for a teenager to earn extra cash. My firm belief is that the earlier one starts doing it, the better. Working in teenage years is like a demo-version of what awaits for you in the future, and it is in your best interest to adapt to it –and obviously, such labor should be voluntary.

Set 1: Essay On Pocket Money

Pocket money is a small amount of money that young children spend on the required things. Such money can be spent on what they like without giving the account to their elders. Generally, as far as teenagers are concerned, pocket money is given by their parents to help them pay independently for their requirements. However, the amount of pocket money depends on what one needs to pay for. It also depends on how much the parents can afford. Such kind of money may be given on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis.

Within the limits, children can always ask their parents for some money. Parents believe that their children have very few needs, other than food they have to buy from the school canteen. However, when teenagers go out with their friends they have more things to pay for like snacks, entertainment such as cinema tickets, purchasing or hiring audio or video CDs, books, magazines, etc. Other items they need to pay for may include recharge in their mobile phones, travel expenses, gifting friends on their birthday, etc.

Some youngsters may help their parents with household tasks to support their pocket money. However, up to some extent it is not sensible to attach an economic value to the household tasks. Some children find it as a fun to earn their own money whatever the amount is. They constantly look for different ways to earn extra pocket money.

There are several ways of earning pocket money. Some of them may help their neighbours or old people in the neighborhood. Helping them in weekly shopping is another way of earning some pocket money. With the permission of parents, one can also do some cutting of the grass for the neighbour or looking after their home when they are away. Teaching other students is a good way of supplementing our pocket money. These are some of the sensible ways of earning some extra pocket money.

Allowing children to earn, save and spend pocket money benefits both parents as well as the children. Pocket money helps to recognize the value of money in early years of life. They learn to be independent and may appreciate their parents as the breadwinners. They also learn the importance of being responsible for what they do, either at school or at part-time work.

Whether parents should allow teenagers to earn pocket money depends on the family conditions. However, at times, pocket money can prove to be a nuisance because no matter how much they get, sometimes it never seems enough.

Essay on “Pocket Money” for School, College Students, Long and Short English Essay, Speech for Class 10, Class 12, College and Competitive Exams.

Pocket Money

Some of them may help their neighbours or old people in the neighbourhood.

Introduction

If you had your own pocket money, how would you spend it?

This essay focuses on how to spend money, and how to do so wisely. In this piece, we share a person’s experience of being taught to spend money wisely and what he would buy when he was given a regular allowance.

Writing an essay on what you would spend your money on? We can help. Go to EssayBasics.com to learn more about our essay writing services . We can help you express yourself by pairing you with a writer who has some experience in your chosen topic.

How I Spend My Money essay

One of the most exciting events in a young one’s life is when their parents give them an allowance. No matter the amount, an allowance gives us the opportunity to spend on small things that make us happy as a child.

The joy that an allowance brings is more than just the amount itself. It’s really rooted in the experience one gets in choosing how to spend it. First, there’s the anticipation of receiving an allowance. Next, there’s the excitement of thinking about all the things you’ve been wanting to get for yourself. Third, there’s the delight of actually receiving the allowance. Finally, there’s the sheer thrill of choosing what to buy and taking it home.

How and when an allowance is given, and how much is gifted to the child, depends on the guardians’ principles. There are those who provide an allowance for children to buy basic needs. But there are some who might give a little extra to give the child an opportunity to learn how to handle money well.

It must be said that not all children are privileged to have an allowance to spend on themselves. If they come from a poor family, the guardians may not have any extra finances to give. They may save up for this just once in a while.

Woman Giving 10 Dollars to a Girl

I am very blessed that my parents gave me an allowance on a regular basis. My allowance has really taught me financial stewardship at a very young age. They also allowed me to make decisions regarding my finances, even if I made mistakes.

Saving Money at a Young Age

While my allowance isn’t a fixed amount, I have since learned that the first thing I should do is set aside a portion of it for savings. I get a third of whatever amount I get and earmark it for saving.

Copper-colored Coin Lot

To make sure that I won’t be tempted to use it, my mom helped me open a bank account where I deposit the money. They opened a time deposit account, which means I cannot just withdraw from it anytime. Whenever I hesitated to go to the bank, my dad would remind me that my small deposits would turn into one big bulk of cash that could someday be used for a rainy day, or for strategic investments.

How I Spend Money with Whatever is Left

With what’s left of my allowance, I usually buy books. These are mainly documentary magazines, which I read during my leisure time. It is actually one of my hobbies. I have made it a personal tradition to always purchase a documentary magazine each time I get my regular allowance. I particularly enjoy news magazines and feature magazines. I am a lover of general knowledge. I love knowing about everything, how and why things are the way they are – whether about nature, politics, science, or geography. It is always a first on my list of hobbies.

The other bit of my regular allowance goes towards the purchase of snacks. I love yogurt and ice cream. The refrigerator at home always has a shelf specifically reserved for my yogurts.

The remainder of my allowance goes towards others. These include my family and friends. I try to buy them something nice as a way of thanking them for taking good care of me.

I also go out of the way to purchase some gifts for my siblings as well as my parents. I want to gift them with simple things, even if they were the ones who gave me my allowance. Doing this for them gives me so much satisfaction since I love making them happy. After all, what is life without happy family and friends?

Regular allowances taught me how to make wise spending decisions. I know how to handle and spend my cash, whatever amount it might be. Therefore, I am confident that when I start handling larger amounts of money in the future, I won’t be as overwhelmed. I will make it a point to remember the financial lessons I’ve learned as a child. I hope to also be able to teach others who to use their money wisely.

Short Essay About What You Would Spend Your Money On

Did you grow up being taught about the value of saving money? If you were like me, your mom and dad probably gave you a regular allowance. They also probably gave you free rein to use your money in whatever way.

Growing up, I deposited regular amounts into my savings account the moment my allowance was handed to me. I did not want to be tempted to splurge on all the food I was craving for while holding all of my money. Personally, apart from fast food, I enjoyed treating myself to books. In fact, I made it a regular tradition to purchase a book every time I got my allowance.

I remember being taught how to make a personal budget out of my allowance. Exactly how much money was given to me didn’t matter as much as the main principle they passed on: save money. They didn’t care if I used the rest of my allowance on junk food or other types of impulse buying. All that mattered to them was whether or not I set aside a portion to put in a savings account. And so I did.

How To Write An Essay About Money

There are so many ways to write a piece about finances. It depends on the lens you are viewing the topic from. Are you an adult looking back at your childhood and remembering important lessons learned? Are you a financial expert looking to give some advice on how to maximize your cash? Are you a student wanting to teach people how to set aside an amount in case of an emergency? Are you a parent who discovered creative hacks in your finances to make ends meet? Find your angle and work it.

How To Spend Money Wisely As A Teenager

When you are young and still living under your guardians’ roof, thinking about contingencies or other things you may be needing to buy before your next allowance comes may not come naturally to you. It is so important to learn how to handle your personal finances even at that age because that sets the direction of your spending in the future. When you start getting a monthly income, the weight of the responsibility is even greater as you start to live independently. Even as a teenager, learn to set financial goals and think of the long game. Even if you have to put money inside a piggy bank to avoid temptation, do so. Track your expenses and make adjustments according to your level of contentment. Learn the art of investing from an expert. Finally, don’t shop ’till you drop. It’s a trap.

Pros and cons of pocket money – is giving an allowance a good idea?

Our money expert explores the benefits and drawbacks of pocket money and whether kids should have to earn the money they are given

Pocket money can be a great way to teach children about the value of money and money management, but it has both its advantages and drawbacks.

Experts say giving your child an allowance can encourage them to take responsible decisions and build independence, and right now, teaching your kids about money has arguably never been more important.

You can also use a pocket money app to encourage your children to develop good money habits and then, as your offspring get older, you can look for the best bank accounts for kids .

Co-founder of money app GoHenry, Louise Hill , says: “It doesn't matter how much you give – it can be 5p or £5 – but the act of paying regular pocket money helps open up conversations around money, and gets children thinking about the four key pillars of money management: spending, saving, earning, and giving.

“You can help kids understand where it comes from; why it's important to save; that when it's gone, it's gone; and the role donating to people less fortunate plays in society. This is even more important as we move to a cashless society and children don’t see physical money exchanging hands in the way we used to.”

Pros of pocket money

According to GoHenry’s Youth Economy Report 2022 , the average pocket money received by children in the UK is £7.62 a week. Most parents increase pocket money with age, with seven-year-olds typically receiving £3.52 a week, 10-year-olds £4.58 and 16-year-olds £13.32.

But regardless of the amount, there are numerous advantages to giving pocket money.

GoodtoKnow Newsletter

Parenting advice, hot topics, best buys and family finance tips delivered straight to your inbox.

1. It teaches children about money management

Having a set weekly allowance will help your children learn to prioritise and budget for the things they want. It will also teach them that their supply of money is finite.

Claire Saunders, certified financial coach at Mint Coaching , says “Pocket money is usually the first opportunity children have to learn and understand the value of money and to navigate financial responsibility. By receiving regular pocket money, children can make choices as they learn how to save, budget, and make spending decisions.”

2. Children can learn about earning money

Understanding the link between money and work is a vital part of kids’ financial education. For young children who aren’t old enough to get a part-time job, paid tasks can be a good introduction to the world of work.

Some parents might also tie pocket money into rewarding good behaviour. Dani Kumrou, mum to 12-year-old Ellie-rose and user of GoHenry, says: “When Ellie-rose was really young we had a reward chart where she’d get stickers for doing things like putting her toys away, eating her fruits and vegetables, playing nicely and sharing with her friends. We would then give her pocket money so she could save up and buy a new toy. So, she learned from a really young age that good behaviour pays rewards, and you should always be good and kind.”

3. It can help get your kids in the savings habit

Parents should encourage children to save a proportion of their pocket money for future large purchases – this can teach them about delayed gratification. You can encourage them to save by paying ‘interest’ on the money they put aside, or matching their savings for specific items.

Dr Lily Canter , a journalist and mother-of-two, says: “I have been giving my boys pocket money from a young age. They both got it from age six and they get £1 a week. It has really helped them to understand the value of money. If they want a magazine, toy or treat for example they have to buy it.

“They both got savings accounts at seven and top this up with their pocket money regularly. My eldest bought himself a laptop at age eight with the money he had saved from pocket money and birthday money from relatives.”

mother and daughter sitting on the floor putting coins into a piggy bank

4. Children can apply maths skills to everyday life

Unfortunately, personal finance isn’t widely taught in schools. But maths is. By giving your kids pocket money you can tie the two subjects together and show your children real life examples of maths at work.

With young children, this can mean helping them calculate how much they will have left after spending some of their money. For older children, you might increase their pocket money in line with inflation or by a percentage.

Cons of pocket money

While there are numerous benefits of pocket money, there are significant disadvantages that should be considered.

1. It can be hard to spare the cash

If you’re strapped for cash at the moment, you might struggle to fit pocket money into your household budget. You might also think twice about giving your kids money if you think they will just fritter it away.

If you don’t have much money to spare, don’t feel pressured to give your kids a large amount. Even a pound or two a week can give young children the feeling of independence.

2. Some children might waste their pocket money

Without the right advice about money, some children may spend it as soon as they get it, rather than saving. They might also spend it on the ‘wrong’ things.

“There’s potential for teenagers to spend their pocket money on unhealthy or risky purchases – think alcohol, cigarettes or excessive amounts of junk food. A good way to manage this is to open up an app or account such as GoHenry, Natwest Rooster or Revolut, rather than giving them cash,” says a MoneyExpert spokesperson, “This way, you’ll have a better idea of how their money is being spent, whilst still giving them the financial freedom they need to learn.”

3. Watch out for entitlement

If your child doesn’t have to work for their money, he or she might develop a sense of entitlement, rather than realising money has to be earned. This could be the case if you are particularly well-off or give your kids an above-average allowance.

Goodto.com's Money Editor Sarah Handley says: "While your intentions may be generous, if you give your children too much pocket money it could harm their long-term relationship with money. They could be less motivated to earn their own money in the long run, or not fully grasp the idea and sense of achievement of saving up for a bigger purchase."

4. Money can provoke jealousy

Most parents increase the amount of pocket money they give their child as they get older. But this means older siblings get more than younger children – which can cause tensions.

Jealousy around money can be even more tricky outside of your family. Can your child cope with having more or less money than their friends? If this is of concern, it could be helpful to ask around to find out the going rate for pocket money in your child’s class.

Should children have to earn their pocket money?

According to a study by Halifax , more than four in 10 (44%) parents think children should only get pocket money if they do chores. But, perhaps unsurprisingly, more than half of children (55%) feel they should be given money, regardless of whether they do anything to earn it.

“Some parents believe that chores are a natural part of family life, and children should contribute to the household without monetary incentives. Others think that paying children for doing chores teaches them the importance of hard work and responsibility,” says Claire at Mint Coaching.

“In our family, we have chosen not to link pocket money to chores, as we believe helping round the home is a responsibility for the whole family. However, we might choose to pay our children if they are doing a ‘job’, that is outside of what we consider to be regular chores, such as cleaning the car.”

Pocket Money

Pocket money is what parents give to their children to spend. A child can spend his pocket money as he or she likes. Sometimes parents guide a child as to how to spend it wisely. Poor parents may not give pocket money to their children regularly. But they do give as often as they can afford. They give it, especially at festivals and fairs. My parents allow me a good amount of pocket money. It is not fixed. It varies from month to month. My father is a businessman. Whenever he is in a jolly mood because of good business, he gives me a fat purse as my pocket money. I do not spend all my pocket money. I save a part of it and deposit it in my bank account. I have opened a Savings Bank account in a nearby bank. I buy books on chess as it is my hobby. I have a good collection of books on the subject. Once in a while, I go to see a dance recital or a stage play with my friends. I also spend some of my pocket money on sweets and ice-creams. Once I helped Ravi to pay his school fee out of my pocket money. His father was away on a tour and he did not have sufficient money. He felt so obliged. After his father’s return, he soon gave me my money back. Last year I gave my mummy a pleasant surprise by presenting her with a beautiful watch on her marriage anniversary. I had bought it from the savings of my pocket money. I often buy things for my little sister out of it. She feels so delighted whenever I surprise her with sweets, a pencil box, and a fancy dress. My pocket money has helped me to learn how to spend wisely and save simultaneously. It is easy to spend, but to spend wisely is a bit difficult. But to save money is more difficult.

Looking for creative ways to boost your income or pad your savings? A side gig could be just the solution you’re searching for. From driving for a ride-share service to completing online surveys, delivering packages or capitalizing on your unique talents, the possibilities for earning extra cash fast are endless. Keep reading to learn about 15 ways to build your wealth.

How To Make Money Fast: 15 Ways

There are plenty of ways to get money fast, whether you’re looking to make money in just a single day, online at home or via a side hustle . Here are some income generation methods that can help you make money quickly.

1. Sell Your Gently Used Items on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace

 • Earnings vary by item

Do you have gently used items that you no longer want? If so, there probably is someone — or several someones — who gladly will pay you for them. Take a few photos, write a brief description and post your items for sale on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace.

You also can make a tidy profit by selling high-quality clothing and accessories on platforms such as Poshmark or Tradesy.

2. Trade in Old Gadgets and Electronics for Cash

 • Earnings vary by gadget condition and model

To make quick cash with minimal effort, try trading in your old, unwanted electronics for cash . Here are some items to consider:

 • Fitness trackers
 • Game consoles

Buyback services will purchase old gadgets and electronics like these online. Some electronics buyback services include ItsWorthMore, Decluttr, Gazelle and Trademore. You can also use eBay and other third-party marketplaces to price your items appropriately and sell them independently.

3. Sell Unused Gift Cards

 • Earnings vary by gift card value

If you have unwanted gift cards gathering dust in a drawer, sell them. You might not get full face value for the cards, but it’s not like you’ll take a loss. Remember, you didn’t buy them — it’s essentially free money in your pocket.

Sell unused gift cards on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace or eBay. Or visit sites such as CardCash to see how much you can sell your gift card for and make the sale in just a few clicks. You also can offer gift cards on your social media accounts to see if there are any takers.

4. Work as a Freelancer

 • $5 or more per project

Fiverr is a great place for first-time freelancers looking to build experience and their portfolios. From logo design and animation to editing and voice-over work, you can find tasks suited to your skills. Prices start at $5 per project.

Once you accumulate feedback, referrals and experience, you can start charging much more. Some people have taken their Fiverr gigs full-time, with jobs paying as much as $10,000 per project, according to the company’s website.

5. Track Down Unclaimed Money

 • The amount you might find can range from a few dollars to thousands, depending on what’s owed to you.

About one in seven Americans have unclaimed property that’s being held by state governments and treasuries, according to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators. If you’ve ever rented an apartment, switched banks or insurance companies, changed jobs, purchased traveler’s checks or paid a utility deposit, you could be one of them.

Each state maintains its own unclaimed money database you can search for free. The U.S. government maintains a web page, located here , that links to state sites as well as to federal government resources for finding unclaimed VA life insurance, FHA mortgage insurance, tax, investments, savings bonds and other funds.

6. Open an Online Dropshipping Store

 • About $2,000 per month

Amazon and Shopify are two sites where you can open your own store, automatically add products and have the products shipped directly from the suppliers to your customers. You’ll need to do your due diligence when it comes to selecting products and suppliers and marketing your store, but both platforms have extensive educational resources to help you get started. Shopify’s dropshipping app also has lots of information plus a profit margin calculator.

Shopify says dropshippers can make $2,000 per month working part-time on an established store.

7. Be an Affiliate Marketer

 • Up to $300 a day or more

Affiliate marketing involves sharing products online and earning a commission by joining one or more affiliate programs, such as Amazon Associates, ClickBank or ShareASale. You’ll earn by promoting and selling those products through your blog or social media channels .

According to Affise, a performance marketing platform for advertisers, low-level affiliates can earn up to $300 a day, while high-level affiliates can earn more than $3,000 a day.

Affiliate marketing can be an entire career — not just a side hustle — based on passive income, which is as close as most people will ever get to free money .

8. Become an Online Survey Taker

 • Up to $16 an hour

It’s not the most exciting side hustle, but there is money to be made by filling out online surveys. Many sites such as Survey Junkie and Swagbucks allow users to earn cash and gift cards.

You also can visit the website of the Columbia Business School Center for Decision Sciences to sign up for online research studies that pay about $16 an hour.

9. Be a Rideshare Driver

 • $21 per hour (median)

Driving for a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft makes it easy to earn money in your spare time, using your own vehicle. Both services require a background check as part of their application process, but once you’ve been accepted, you can start driving right away and cash out multiple times each day.

10. Be a Delivery Driver

 • $18 per hour (median)

Spark, Amazon Flex, GrubHub, Roadie, UberEats and DoorDash are just a few of the companies that pay drivers to make deliveries using their own car. Rules, pay and requirements vary by company and platform. However, you can stack delivery gigs to maximize your time.

11. Tutor Students Online

 • $18.30 per hour on average

If you have a computer, an internet connection and expertise in just one subject area, you can tutor students online. TutorMe hires tutors in more than 300 subjects and pays $16 an hour. Preply uses tutors in more than 100 subjects. Tutors set their rates and earn an average of $18.30 per hour, according to Preply’s internal data.

12. Work as a Virtual Assistant

 • Average income of $24 per hour

A virtual assistant can work for an individual or a big business, performing tasks that include responding to customer phone calls, setting appointments, assisting with travel or event planning, or posting to social media. Since many people do these things daily as part of their personal agendas, they are well suited to virtual assistant jobs.

13. Become a Pet Sitter or Dog Walker

 • Median income of $14.32 per hour

Sign up to watch pets while their owners are out of town. Pet-sitting sites, such as Rover, connect pet owners with sitters for a cut — 15% to 25% — of the sitter’s earnings paid by client users. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, pet sitters make a median of $14.32 an hour, or $29,790 a year.

14. Mow Lawns

 • Median income is $17 an hour

Lawn care is a booming industry; it takes little more than owning a lawn mower and a weed trimmer and being willing to work. Depending on the lawn size, you can expect to rake in between $17 an hour on average or more .

So, how do you get started?

Once you have the equipment, take a stroll through your neighborhood and look for lawns the owners haven’t mowed or maintained. When you find them, knock on the front door and explain that you’re a neighbor starting a lawn care service and would like to take care of their lawn.

Chances are, you’ll run into “no” plenty of times before you get your first “yes,” but don’t let that discourage you. Keep trying until you build a lucrative lawn-care service.

15. Access Your Paycheck Earlier

Although not really a way to “make money,” this tip can help you gain access to your money faster if you’re in a pinch. Many banks offer early access to paychecks you have direct-deposited into your checking account. You can also check into paycheck advance apps to help you access your paycheck two to three days faster than regular bank processing times — or instantly if you want to pay an extra fee, such as 1%.

What To Avoid When Looking for Fast Cash

While you might be desperate to get your hands on some quick cash, there are some avenues you should avoid , including payday loans, car title loans and high-interest personal loans or debt consolidation loans. All of these types of loans can come with fees and astronomical interest, which can saddle you with expensive debt that can be difficult to pay off.

Also, be wary of online jobs that don’t require any special skills, education or experience but have a high rate of pay or generous perks. If an opportunity seems too good to be true, it likely is. Unfortunately, many online job offers can be scams .

FAQ About Making Money Fast

 • One of the best ways to get money immediately is to sell your unwanted goods. Used electronics, unused gift cards and several other items you might have lying around your house may be just what you need to immediately put some money in your pocket. Of course, selling things isn't the only way to make money fast. Use any of the options above to get your hands on the money you need.
 • It may be difficult to earn $1,000 today, but it's not impossible. Start by looking through your home for items of value that you're not using. Do you have an old computer, 3D printer or any other piece of technology you can sell? What about gently used clothing or kitchen items? Next, try to find private buyers and sell them as many of your items as possible.
 • Take the items you have left to the pawn shop . Of course, pawn shops are in business to make money, so you'll get less than you would for selling your items to a private party, but they can get you closer to your $1,000 goal . Keep in mind that pawn shops will try to lowball, so it's best to negotiate to try and get as much money for your items as possible .
 • Just about anything on the list above can help put $100 in your pocket quickly. Sell your gently used items, give people rides using a ride-sharing platform like Uber, become a music coach or take advantage of any of the other tips mentioned above.
 • You can make $500 quickly in multiple ways, but the easiest way is likely to sell your unwanted goods. It might surprise you how much money you have tied up in unused items collecting dust around your house.

Saving money doesn’t have to require drastic changes in your life. Often, small, simple habits can lead to significant savings over time. Here are 15 easy strategies that can help you save money without having to pinch pennies.

You can shop for groceries and deliver them to busy customers. With a car or bike, you can turn grocery shopping into an easy side job to make some extra money. Apps like Instacart or Shipt are a great way to start.

1. Avoid Shopping Hungry

Never enter a shop when you’re hungry. Shopping on an empty stomach often leads to impulse buys and unnecessary spending. It’s a simple but effective way to stick to your budget.

Restaurants are expensive, including for takeout and delivery. Cooking your own meals can drastically cut your food costs, and you’ll appreciate restaurants more when you do go to them.

2. Cook Mostly at Home

Try cooking at home more often. Not only is it healthier, it’s usually cheaper than dining out. Home-cooked meals can lead to substantial savings over time.

There are a lot of ways that a library can serve you. They rent movies and books for free, of course, but many also rent things like DVD players and other equipment. Some even rent out items like DIY kits for crafts and home improvement. They also have meeting rooms you can reserve for your group get-togethers.

3. Utilize Local Libraries

Libraries are treasure troves of free resources, including books, audiobooks, and more. Overcoming any stigma about using libraries can unlock a world of free entertainment and education.

Twitch, YouTube, Amazon, and other streaming services have increased subscription prices, raising questions about their motives. This shift reflects a broader industry trend of prioritizing revenue over low-cost subscriptions, potentially impacting users’ wallets.

4. Explore Free Streaming

Services like Tubi, Freevee, and PlutoTV offer quality entertainment for free. Many excellent shows and movies are available on these platforms, challenging the notion that you need to pay for good content.

Of course, you should only go to a dentist for any dental work beyond a cleaning, but not all dentists are the same. A dentist who charges a lot less than another for the same procedure may not specialize in it, and you could be in for pain and more procedures.

5. Practice Dental Care

Taking care of your teeth with regular brushing and flossing is crucial. Preventative dental care now can save you thousands later in avoiding major dental work.

Avoid buying convenience items. For example, instead of a single cold soda, buy a 12-pack. Convenience stores often charge a premium, so planning ahead can save money.

6. Skip Convenience Items

Avoid buying convenience items. For example, instead of a single cold soda, buy a 12-pack. Convenience stores often charge a premium, so planning ahead can save money.

Get rid of your storage unit and most of its contents. Often, storage units are a costly way to keep things you don’t really need or use.

7. Eliminate Storage Units

Get rid of your storage unit and most of its contents. Often, storage units are a costly way to keep things you don’t really need or use.

Here’s one last example of poor car-buying advice before we move on, and it might be the worst. First, the interest rate on a car loan will probably be lower. Second, don’t max out your credit card on a car. Finally, you’ll still lose the car and/or face penalties if you don’t pay the bill; a credit card is not a runaround.

8. Use Cashback Credit Cards

Buy everything with cashback or reward credit cards. It’s like earning free money for purchases you would make anyway, potentially adding up to a significant amount annually.

You can also buy things at thrift stores and get a great bargain. Some of what you’ll find there is junk, but be discerning and look for items that are good quality.

9. Shop Secondhand

Secondhand shopping is not only economical but also environmentally friendly. You can find most items in good condition at a fraction of their original price.

Learning to make dough for pizza, buns, noodles, and tortillas can be fun and cost-effective. Making it at home is often cheaper and healthier.

10. Make Your Own Dough

Learning to make dough for pizza, buns, noodles, and tortillas can be fun and cost-effective. Making it at home is often cheaper and healthier.

Most online banking systems today will allow you to set up automatic savings. This can be used to automatically move money into a savings account, index fund, retirement fund, etc. so that you don’t have to worry about trying to save that amount of money. As soon as you’re paid, the money is transferred.

11. Save a Paycheck Percentage

Set aside a certain percentage of your paycheck into a savings account. Choose an account that’s not easy to access impulsively and ensure it bears interest.

There actually are people who do this. It doesn’t keep bill collectors from coming after you. Plus, you could be at risk of prosecution for creating fraudulent accounts.

12. Hold Off on New Phones

Resist the urge to buy the latest phone releases. Often, the upgrades are minimal and not worth the cost.

Opt for water over pricey beverages when dining out. Not only will this habit save you money on your restaurant bill, but it’ll also help you stay hydrated and make healthier choices.

13. Choose Water at Restaurants

Opting for water instead of soda at restaurants is a simple way to cut down on dining costs. It’s healthier and lighter on the wallet.

Some states and countries collect deposits when you buy glass bottles and some other beverage containers. You can collect returnable bottles and cans and get paid for them while also making the world a little cleaner. Selling scrap metal is also an easy way to earn some quick cash.

14. Embrace Recycling

Recycling is better for the planet and your wallet. Thrift stores, library sales, and yard sales are great places to find bargains.

While a cup of coffee can provide a much-needed energy boost, excessive caffeine consumption can lead to dependency and withdrawal symptoms.

15. Brew Coffee at Home

Making your coffee at home instead of buying from places like Starbucks can lead to significant savings. Home brewing allows you to enjoy your daily caffeine fix at a lower cost.

Get ready for sneaky new credit card fees

Your bank is looking for new ways to screw you over.

ways to earn pocket money essay

Good news! Some of those annoying fees on your credit card may soon be getting smaller. Bad news! Banks and credit-card companies are almost certainly trying to figure out where else they squeeze money out of you.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced last month that it had finalized a rule capping credit-card late fees at $8 for the first violation, cutting them down from the typical $32. Later that month, Mastercard and Visa reached a $30 billion settlement with US merchants agreeing to cap credit-card interchange fees — fees charged to retailers every time you swipe your card at their stores — for a handful of years.

Much of the industry's reaction to the late-fees limit has been of the sky-is-falling variety, with the Bank Policy Institute, an advocacy group, declaring that such charges are "essential to efficient functioning of the market." The response to the interchange-fee settlement has been a bit more muted: The Electronic Payments Coalition, which represents Visa, Mastercard, and other credit-card companies, said it was OK with the swipe-fees cap. This sanguine approach, however, is likely in no small part because the agreement is much less aggressive than legislation floating around in Congress . Taken together, it's clear that many companies in the credit-card business would rather not be dealing with this situation.

For consumers, the changes could be a decent deal. By the CFPB's calculation, late fees cost American families $14 billion a year, and it says the rule will save people some $10 billion annually. The swipe-fee cap will save merchants some money for a while, which could, in theory, be passed on to their customers, though it's unclear how much that will happen in practice.

Banks will always be able to find other places to recoup revenue for things like this

But there's good reason to think that, in the long run, these changes may not be an unambiguous win for credit-card customers : Financial firms are very good at getting money out of people. There are all sorts of levers card issuers can and will pull to try to recuperate any lost revenue streams elsewhere. Where one door closes, a window opens — one many consumers may be surprised to see on their next credit-card statement.

"Banks will always be able to find other places to recoup revenue for things like this," Matt Schulz, the chief credit analyst at LendingTree, told me. "I would imagine that we will see other fees increase over the next little while."

In the wake of the Visa/Mastercard settlement, analysts at UBS wrote in a note to investors that lost revenue due to caps on credit-card late fees and swipe fees, as well as impending changes to lower debit-card swipe fees, would send companies such as JPMorgan Chase, American Express, and Synchrony Financial looking for offsets elsewhere. There are a number of areas financial-services firms can turn to so they can make that money back, they said, including charging more interest and layering in various additional fees on items such as getting printed statements. They also said they thought there would be more fee-based card products, as in cards with annual fees.

"As the economics evolve, we would not expect the banks/card issuers to sit idle," the analysts wrote.

Mark Elliot, the chief customer officer at LendingClub and a banking-industry veteran, noted that annual interest rates for credit-card debt are extra high right now, which could make it harder for companies to ratchet them up even further, though not impossible.

"We've seen a lot of research that most customers are not even as aware of what the rate is on their card as they probably should be, so the card companies could increase that," he said.

Companies could look to downgrade credit-card rewards , which would save them money by not having to pay them out, though everyone is a little hesitant to alienate rewards customers. There are other places where banks and credit-card companies can look to pay for rewards like hotel points, miles, and cash back, such as upping foreign transaction fees or transfer fees or drawing from elsewhere. The Visa/Mastercard settlement allows retailers to add a surcharge for people with fancier rewards cards, which often come with higher swipe fees, but it's not clear how many merchants will do that. They don't want to drive away customers, especially more affluent, higher spenders, which rewards-card holders tend to be.

"Most merchants don't want to put themselves in the position of being the bad-guy tax collector on Visa and Mastercard's behalf," Doug Kantor, the general counsel at the National Association of Convenience Stores, said.

According to the Merchants Payments Coalition, Mastercard is now planning to increase different credit card fees soon, it's "network assessment" fee.

Banks and credit-card issuers have already been discussing in earnings calls their plans for what to do on fee clampdowns. With regard to the late-fee cap, Citi's chief financial officer, Mark Mason, said in its January call that the bank was planning to make up the lost revenue with various "offsets and mitigants," though he didn't specify what those were. The same month, Capital One CEO Rich Fairbank said the CFPB rule, once implemented, would have a "significant impact" on its profits and losses in the near term but that the company could deploy "mitigating actions" to eventually counteract it.

We've seen a lot of research that most customers are not even as aware of what the rate is on their card as they probably should be, so the card companies could increase that

Of course, things do not have to be this way. Banks have financial incentives to make a public fuss whenever any revenue stream is threatened, though it's not clear how big of a threat this actually is to their business or just what magnitude of changes they would need to make up the revenue. Whatever the reality, if they yell loud enough that some regulatory or legislative change will destroy their business, it ups the chances that said change will be reversed or never go through in the first place. And, on a fundamental level, many financial firms don't need such high profits to stay afloat in the first place, as much as their shareholders may demand them.

How many levers companies like JPMorgan Chase and Capital One can pull may also depend on competitive factors, Ira Rheingold, the executive director of the National Association of Consumer Advocates, said. Companies do have to contend with one another in terms of what types of annual fees they can get away with or interest rates they can charge. "I think there are some fundamental incentives that will keep them from going too crazy," he said.

The scenario does appear to be somewhat of a whack-a-mole situation — one fee is axed here, another fee appears over there. Amanda Jackson, the director of consumer campaigns at Americans for Financial Reform, said the only way to actually end this frustrating fee game was for the government to step in, as it's attempting to do with the late-fees limit, and set rules that apply to a wider swath of charges.

"We need regulations with true reforms that allow for billions to be saved," she said.

So next time your credit-card bill lands at your door, you may want to take a closer look at it to see whether any surprise extra charges wound up in there — and to see what your interest rate is.
