Learning Objectives
Based on the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, here's what you should be able to do after having completed the research process steps of this guide:
- Develop an appropriate research plan, while understanding that research is iterative (cyclical process) and that the plan may change throughout the research process
- Analyze and interpret the information collected using a growing awareness of the topic to decide whether additional information is required or recognize when the information need has been met
- Identify potential places to go and individuals to contact, within the library, for additional support and assistance
The Search Process
Remember that the search process is not linear, it is cyclical and iterative . You might need to repeat or refine some steps to successfully achieve your research goals.

Our students live the practical experience of thinking like a lawyer while making writing choices based on the context, audience, and purpose, of the document. We integrate practical writing instruction throughout all three years of legal study . Students gain experience with real-life writing demands through credited writing courses, workshops and modules integrated into first-year and upper-year substantive courses, free-standing workshops, and peer-mentoring conferences.
Experiential and active learning drives the Academy’s approach. We use real life writing tasks, combined with personalized and frequent feedback and mentoring. Students learn to self- and peer-edit and discover that becoming an expert legal writer is an enjoyable, life-long endeavor.
Writing Modules - The Content Expert And Writing Expert Team arrow_drop_down
We integrate writing modules into substantive law course. Our legal writing professors duplicate a realistic legal problem based on material supplied by the professor teaching the substantive law course. The content expert professor sets the knowledge-based learning goals and the writing professor sets the legal writing goals. Students learn the law as they would on the job, by writing a predictive legal memo, client advice letter, persuasive policy brief, factum, or brief to the court. The writing professors teach the ins and outs of writing effective predictive and persuasive documents. The writing module includes a class on self-editing and a reflective writer’s note capturing the student’s learning and new writing strategies.
Modules and Workshops for First-Year Students arrow_drop_down
First-year students are off to a solid start in our workshop, How to Read a Case Like an Expert. You’ll learn tools for understanding and organizing your research and writing tasks in Think Like a Lawyer – Write Like a Pro . The difference between predictive and persuasive writing will become clear in, Advise the Client, Persuade the Court . And you’ll polish a first-year writing assignment using our five-layered approach in How to Edit Your Own Work. The Dispute Resolution and Professional Responsibility course includes a Fall term module on writing memos and a January term module on client advice letters.
Upper-Year Legal Writing Seminars arrow_drop_down

CML 4113 Legal Writing and Social Justice (Selected Problems in Legal Practice) You’ll work on a social justice writing project of practical use to the community, a non-governmental organization, a charity, a government entity, or a vulnerable group. You polish your legal research and writing skills through in-class exercises, legal memos, and writing a persuasive document. Class work will expose you to social justice issues of the day and examples of social justice writing. Your final assignment is a legal writing project you choose aimed at a social justice goal. Each layer concentrates on a different editing task to keep students from becoming overwhelmed by editing everything all at once and to maximize editing power. Each layer starts with a brief overview and short exercises that students use to self-diagnose their skills level. Then students can try editing strategies, pre-tested by our students. As they go through the layers, students construct a personal editing checklist that they can modify in the future as they master different editing steps.
