Ranking guidelines.

We selected the degree programs based on the quality of program and range of courses provided, as well as school awards, rankings, and reputation.

Our Methodology

Here at TheBestSchools.org, we take the trust and welfare of our readers very seriously. When making our school and program rankings, our top priority is ensuring that our readers get accurate, unbiased information that can help them make informed decisions about online education. That's why we've developed a rigorous ranking methodology that keeps the needs of our readers front and center.

Our proprietary, multi-criteria ranking algorithm analyzes key data indicators — as collected by the federal government — for each school or program. What data we use depends on the focus of each specific ranking, but in all cases, our ranking methodology is impartial: Schools  cannot buy better rankings  at TBS.

While specific criteria under consideration can vary by ranking, there are a few data points that we value most highly. They are affordability, academic quality, and online enrollment. Below, we break down our algorithm to help you understand what you're getting when you use one of our rankings.

  • Affordability
  • Online Enrollment

Data Sources

The data used in TBS rankings comes primarily from the federal government, and much of it is provided by the schools themselves. We aggregate and analyze this data to build our rankings.

The  Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System  (IPEDS) is our primary source. Its data comes from annual surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Education's  National Center for Education Statistics  (NCES). Every college, university, or technical school with access to federal financial aid must participate in these surveys, which include questions about enrollment, graduation rates, finances, and faculty qualifications. This is publicly available data, which you can access yourself through the  College Navigator .

Additionally, because we value a personal touch and the professional experience of our staff and Academic Advisory Board, we vet all results and adjust rankings as necessary based on our collected knowledge of schools and degree programs. Depending on the ranking, we may obtain additional input from  AcademicInfluence.com , subject matter experts, prior TBS ranking lists, or other sources we deem relevant to a particular ranking.

Breakdown of Our Rankings Methodology

About our ranking factors.

Here at TBS, we value what you value: quality education, affordability, and the accessibility of online education. These factors guide all of our program rankings.

Each of these factors are further broken down into weighted subfactors. For example, retention rates are weighted more heavily than availability of program options because they are a better indicator of student success.

We chose the following factors for our rankings because of their influence on learning experiences and graduate outcomes. However, students should always balance our rankings against their personal priorities. For instance, a learner who needs a fully online program may prioritize online flexibility more than our rankings do. Our rankings are designed to help you make a decision — not to make a decision for you.

  • Collapse All

Academics - 75%

Affordability - 15%, online enrollment - 10%.

In all our school rankings and recommendations, we work for objectivity and balance. We carefully research and compile each ranking list, and as stated in our advertising disclosure, we do NOT permit financial incentives to influence rankings. Our articles never promote or disregard a school for financial gain.

If you have questions about our ranking methodology, please feel free to connect with our staff through  contact page .

We thank you for your readership and trust.

How Long Does It Take to Get an Online Doctorate in Business Administration?

Students typically earn a doctor of business administration online in three to five years, including the time required to research, write, and defend a dissertation. Programs generally require 60 credit hours of coursework. These credits include core and elective coursework, a research component, and the dissertation.

Several factors can affect how long it takes to earn a DBA degree online. Some schools will honor more transfer credits than others. Schools that accept a generous amount of transfer credits allow students to graduate earlier than they would otherwise. Schools that follow an individually paced learning format rather than a cohort learning format may also help students to graduate in less time. Individually paced learning allows students to advance through course requirements at their own speed. Unfortunately, these same opportunities do not always apply for students earning their doctor of business administration online.

Accreditation for Online Doctorate in Business Administration Degrees

When a school is regionally or nationally accredited, it means that an accrediting agency has conducted a review and determined the school meets certain standards of educational quality. Of the two types, regional accreditation is generally considered more prestigious than national accreditation. While most schools and employers honor credits earned at a regionally accredited school, not all regionally accredited schools or employers will honor credits earned at a nationally accredited school.

When choosing an online DBA program, you should check to see that the school is accredited and determine whether this accreditation is regional or national. Common regional accrediting agencies include the Higher Learning Commission and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The Distance Education Accrediting Commission is a common national accrediting agency that reviews online programs. You should also look for online DBA programs accredited by business-specific accrediting agencies like the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs.

Two organizations oversee accreditation: the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). The ED is a government agency responsible for overseeing the quality and progress of educational programs in the U.S. CHEA is an independent organization representing more than 3,000 colleges and over 50 accrediting organizations. While neither entity grants accreditation to schools, both organizations review accrediting agencies to determine if they meet certain standards of quality. Both organizations also publish a list of accredited programs for the public’s use. To find out whether an online DBA or online Ph.D. program in business is accredited, consult the list of accredited programs on the ED and CHEA websites.

How much does an online ph.d. in business cost.

Most online Ph.D. in business programs take 4-6 years to complete, costing you anywhere from $50,000-$170,000 in total tuition and fees.

Online DBA programs take roughly 3-6 years, depending on your school and whether you’re full time or part time. This means that a DBA can cost anywhere from $37,000-$170,000.

The main factors that affect how much you’ll spend on your online business Ph.D. or DBA degree are:

  • The length of your program
  • Whether you enroll in a private or public school
  • How much financial aid you qualify for
  • Whether your program is fully funded (many doctoral programs are!)
  • Whether you opt for a DBA or Ph.D.

Make sure to submit the FAFSA to see if you’re eligible for federal grants and loans. Colleges and universities also use the FAFSA to award institutional aid.

In addition, check whether your employer offers tuition reimbursement.

Remember that when earning your DBA or Ph.D. in business online, you may need to budget for things like technology fees and a laptop.

What's the difference between a doctorate in business administration and a business Ph.D.?

Students can earn either a doctorate in business administration or a doctor of philosophy in business. Both degrees require three to five years of advanced business coursework and original research. However, a DBA trains students to find practical solutions to existing business problems, and prepares students to work in high-level business roles. Students in a Ph.D. program develop business theories at the abstract level, which prepares graduates to work in academia or research.

Insights from a doctor of business administration degree holder

Dr. David L Tuyo II, DBA, MBA serves as the President and CEO of University Credit Union . His career in the financial services industry spans over 20 years, with the majority dedicated to serving credit unions. He has served financial institutions in a multitude of roles, including COO, CFO, and chief investment officer.

ZDNet: Why did you choose to pursue a DBA program, rather than a business Ph.D. program?

David Tuyo: After completing my MBA, I was curious about what the next steps would be, while at the same time assessing the next 25+ years of my career. I have always wanted to pursue an academic interest, but only after retirement from the financial services industry.

With this in mind, I was choosing between a doctor of philosophy in management or a doctor of business administration. I spoke with many who were in the academic community, and then I weighed the consequences on my personal life, as we had young children in elementary school at that time. Since I was not going to pursue a career as an academic in the near term and the DBA offered a more professional/career-friendly option, I decided the DBA was the best path.

ZDNet: What were the biggest takeaway(s) you got from your DBA program that you may not have gotten otherwise?

DT: The entire experience was extraordinary. The research and exploration in fields that I had the pleasure of working within for decades were given new light and possibility. The partnership with faculty to push me to levels I had not previously achieved was beyond gratifying. The application of some of the work immediately in the financial services industry gave credence to the years of work in earning the DBA.

ZDNet: In what cases is a DBA worth it to pursue? In what cases might it not be worthwhile?

DT: For a professional wishing to pursue further academic work and not planning on entering the world of academics, the DBA is a phenomenal choice. For those wishing to enter the world of academia sooner than later, the Ph.D. would most likely be the best option.

Other: Rota has no colleges so, I appreciate the online classroom that the University of Phoenix allows. Many people on my island has successfully graduated from this online University. We trust its brand, and the services rendered to us and our geographic challenges are impeccable! They make all the necessary accommodations and exceptions to ensure that we succeed. We are also prone to super typhoons and breakdown in our communication infrastructure so, these are factors that this University has come to consider and have a back up plan for its students ensuring that we do not fall too far behind, or are able to continue once those vital infrastructures are back in place. The online classroom are very user friendly especially to my community where English is our second language. They have resources to make it the entire process comprehensible and easy to access. Attending top business courses and meeting your education goals without the need to relocate is an excellent opportunity. By choosing the best program for your needs, you can get a Ph.D. in business without leaving the comfort of your own home or giving up your day job.

Let’s take a closer look at top online Ph.D. business programs and how to choose the best one for yourself.

Benefits of Online Ph.D. Business Programs

While many people prefer to get their education in the traditional offline format, online Ph.D. business programs are gaining popularity quickly. The key benefits of getting your Ph.D. online include:

Many people who are preparing to get their Ph.D. in business are already busy with many other tasks, including work. They rarely have the time to dedicate mornings and afternoons to studying.

One of the ways to add flexibility to the education process is to study online. Online programs can give you an opportunity to study at the hours you prefer instead of following a strict offline class schedule.

When you choose an online program, you can build your schedule the way you want to. This way you can maximize productivity without having to abandon your everyday tasks.

When you choose offline education, you are generally limited to places where you are willing to relocate. For many people, who plan to get a Ph.D., relocation to another state can be complicated and expensive.

By choosing to get your Ph.D. in business online, you can browse a wider choice of educational institutions. It’s an opportunity to find the ideal program for your needs without moving to another location to get the education you want.

Many people mistakenly believe that tuition for getting an education online is lower than offline education costs. In reality, any given university demands the same amount for online and offline programs.

However, by choosing to study online, you can save money on relocation, transportation, food, housing, and many other additional expenses that come with getting an offline education,

In the end, you are likely to pay less for an online degree than you would for an offline Ph.D. in business.

Types of Online Ph.D. Business Programs

When choosing a program for your needs, you have to identify the direction of your studies. The common types of Ph.D. business programs online include:

The most common specialization that people pursue when deciding to get an online Ph.D. in business is accounting. Accounting involves in-depth knowledge of the tax system and auditing techniques.

Doctors of business administration can become top-level accountants in large corporations or government organizations.  Finance majors learn about investments and gain in-depth knowledge of mergers and acquisitions.

Organizational leadership is a highly demanded type of education since it teaches future C-suite executives highly valuable skills, including interpersonal skills, management skills, empathy, creativity, and much more.

Students who get a doctorate degree in organizational leadership can become chief executive officers (CEO), chief operating officers (COO), and chief administrative officers (CAO).

Getting a doctorate degree in business can involve learning different aspects of marketing that are the driving force behind business success. These programs prepare students for top-level research and consulting positions in corporations. DBAs in marketing can also fill teaching positions in academic institutions.

If you want your doctorate degree to help you meet your boldest career goals, you need to make sure that the school you choose has proper accreditation. Each of the schools that offer high-quality programs in business has to be accredited by a specific organization .

Accreditation is an indication that the school meets specific educational standards. You can usually find this information on the college’s or university’s website. If it’s not readily available, this could raise a red flag.

Even if you don’t need this doctorate degree to advance your career but only plan to use it for your own business, accreditation still matters. It demonstrates the quality of the knowledge you get at the school and compliance with education regulations.

Besides regular school accreditation, educational institutions that offer Ph.D. programs in business can have additional certificates. Reputable business schools have programmatic accreditation. This is granted by:

  • Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)
  • Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP)
  • International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE)

This type of accreditation can demonstrate top education quality aimed at helping you advance in your career. Accredited schools have met rigorous standards and demonstrated their devotion to improving the quality of their business programs.

Admission requirements for an online Ph.D. in business can vary from school to school. Typical requirements from the admission committee include:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in business administration and related fields. If your degree is in a field that isn’t related to business, you can still be accepted based on other criteria and achievements. Keep in mind that the degree should be from a properly accredited school.
  • Transcripts from colleges and universities you attended (official copies)
  • GPA (usually at least 3.0, however, some universities are willing to accept candidates with lower averages)
  • Standardized test scores GRE or GMAT (usually less than five years old)
  • Resume or CV
  • Letters of references (the number of letters can differ. Many universities ask for at least three)
  • Statement of purpose that includes your plans and reasons for pursuing a doctorate degree in business

Your resume and statement of purpose can make up for a low GPA and the absence of a relevant degree. When it comes to accepting a student into an online Ph.D. program, admissions committees can be flexible. If you can prove that you can be a valuable asset to the program, it’s always possible to get accepted without fulfilling general requirements.

Online Ph.D. programs in business usually take three to five years to complete. You can research universities that offer expedited learning opportunities.  With them, it’s possible to complete a program within three years. However, such programs require long hours of studying and could be hard to complete if you have a day job. In fact, some universities prohibit Ph.D. students in expedited programs to work since it prevents them from completing their studies.

It’s not uncommon for students to complete Ph.D. programs in six, eight, or even twelve years. This usually happens because people are busy with other responsibilities and can’t dedicate sufficient time to studying.

When choosing the Ph.D. program, take the time to find out how long it took the alumni to complete their studies. This could give you an idea of what to expect.

Once you complete your Ph.D. business program online, you can choose from a variety of career paths. Some of them include:

  • Business consultant (also management consultant or management analyst) – reviews data about organization operations and provides advice to improve the bottom line.
  • C-suit executive (COO, CAO, CEO)- oversees major aspects of company operations, including employment, budgeting, growth, and development.
  • Economist – studies data and trends relevant to the economic landscape and performs statistical analysis for companies or organizations, including the government.
  • University faculty – teaches classes in colleges or universities and shares knowledge in management, business practices, and ethical leadership.

If you have your own business, getting an online Ph.D. in business can help you move your business forward and become an industry leader.

And you must meet significant program admission requirements before being admitted to the prerequisite course. Follow this step-by-step process to send in your doctoral application:

  • Submit your application
  • Complete an interview (if necessary)
  • Send in your supplemental documentation

Complete and pass (with a B or higher) a prerequisite course called Foundations of Doctoral Studies to be admitted to the program.

What is the difference between a PhD and a DBA?

A PhD is a discipline-oriented research degree with a narrow focus designed to train you for a role as a researcher or faculty member in a specific academic area. The DBA is for practitioners who will learn to acquire, appraise, analyze, apply, and assess information for complex decision-making in professional settings. The traditional career path for a PhD graduate is in the academic world, while the traditional career path for a DBA graduate is a management practitioner in specialties associated with a broad range of professions.

If you earn a DBA, you may be qualified to teach at the community college or university level. However, this program is not designed for students who aspire to obtain tenure-track positions at research universities.

Is UMGC accredited?

Yes. UMGC is regionally accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. In addition, UMGC is a public state university in the University System of Maryland .

In addition, the DBA program (as well as the MBA) is accredited by the IACBE.

How do students follow their cohort through the doctoral program?

Upon acceptance into the doctoral degree program, DBA students are expected to make progress through each course in a common group called a cohort. As they progress through the program together, they build helpful working relationships with one another and support one another’s development. Beyond their cohort, students in the doctoral program are also members of the broader practitioner-scholar learning community that includes other doctoral students, UMGC faculty, and doctoral alumni.

Are DBA courses offered in the summer?

Only the prerequisite course (DBA 600) is offered in the summer term. All other content courses and dissertation courses required for the Doctor of Business Administration are offered three times per year: fall, winter, and spring. Selected online summer workshops are offered periodically between July and September.

Where can I find previously published UMGC dissertations?

To find previously published doctoral research, visit the UMGC Library’s curated section for  doctoral students .

Can I take doctoral-level courses provisionally or without applying?

No. DBA courses are not available for enrollment until successful completion of the pre-admission course, Foundations of Doctoral Studies (3 Credits, DBA 600). This is the only doctoral-level course that can be taken prior to official admission to the doctoral program. A complete application for admission, including the documents outlined above in the Program Admission Requirements section, must be submitted by the application deadline in order to be considered for this course (application deadlines shown above).

Are UMGC library resources available to applicants and prospective students?

No. Applicants to the DBA program and prospective students do not have access to the UMGC Library. Please visit this guide to peer-reviewed articles and the UMGC Library guide for more information about finding scholarly articles.

Who do I contact for further information about the DBA program?

The program will equip you with advanced business knowledge and expose you to complex management theories through different courses.

Additionally, you’ll enhance different skills, like leadership, communication, and critical thinking, which are vital in running organizations. Decision-making is also a daily part of an executive’s life.

Through the DBA program, you’ll be exposed to different research methods and will be able to make sound decisions based on relevant data and analysis. For some, taking a DBA will help them in entering the academe and pursue teaching.

What are the benefits of an online DBA program?

With online learning gaining popularity, more universities have created online programs to accommodate virtual learners, including those seeking a Doctoral Degree. DBA programs are generally intended for working and practicing professionals. Through a distance learning format, students get to enjoy the following advantages:

  • Better schedule – Attending on-campus classes while juggling your job may pose several challenges, including that of your schedule. Taking up an online program gives you the flexibility that you need to work on your assignments during your convenient time.
  • Earn while you advance – With the flexibility, you may be able to maintain your work responsibilities and cover the topics needed for your DBA. With this, you’ll continuously earn while reaching your career goals.
  • Budget-friendly option – Online programs may be cheaper compared to taking a DBA in-campus. Aside from not requiring any textbooks, the tuition rate is generally lower since you won’t be using any of the school’s facilities.
  • Get a personalized curriculum – Most universities offer a range of concentrations and you may even mix and match the courses according to your goals. This is made possible by asynchronous learning resources which provide a set of learning resources per course.
  • Receive mentorship – Coaching services are almost always part of online degree programs. This allows you to get the proper guidance when pursuing an academic path. One-on-one sessions are made possible by video conferencing apps while some schools even offer 24/7 chat support.

How long does it take to earn a DBA program?

The duration of your DBA program varies per university. This may span from three years up to ten years, depending on your pace. Most programs are divided into two phases: theoretical coursework and dissertation or research project.

The first phase of the DBA program usually entails discussions and the introduction of complex business theories and concepts. In some cases, you’ll also cover courses on research methodologies and data interpretation which will prepare you for the research project.

The second phase covers the entire course of the topic proposal, research, analysis, and dissertation writing. This may take six months up to two years. Most universities allow their graduate student to take fewer courses than the prescribed curriculum to accommodate their professional work.

Is professional experience required to earn a Doctoral Degree?

Most, if not all, universities require a specific number of years of experience. This may range from two to five years and may have a specified field. Since the program usually draws from real-world business situations, it’s vital that you’ve experienced working in an actual business setting.

Taking up a DBA without prior may not be as relatable and will not fulfill the goals of the program. However, whether you’ve worked in a multinational corporation, small-scale business, or start-up, you’ll get a fair chance of being evaluated for DBA admissions.

Will earning a DBA help advance my career?

Yes. A Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is a doctoral program intended to help experienced professionals advance their career, obtain a higher level of professionalism, and better understand ethical and managerial concerns.

A DBA degree can provide graduates with the hands-on experience needed to develop their business knowledge, sharpen their critical thinking skills, and gain a competitive edge in the workplace.

An individual with a DBA degree may be able to take on leadership roles, open their own businesses, or find consulting opportunities.

What should I prepare when pursuing a doctoral degree?

For starters, you’ll be asked to fulfill a set of admission requirements, which vary for every academic institution since each one has a set of standards and documents needed to admit an enrollee.

Most universities require your transcripts, recommendation letters, resume, and an intent letter. Most importantly, you’ll need to prepare yourself. Going beyond the requirements, pursuing a DBA entails a set of skills to successfully finish. This includes:

  • Analytical Skills – With a DBA, you’ll encounter a lot of case studies and business data that require proper analysis and understanding.
  • Discipline – Taking a self-paced online program requires discipline and focus since you’ll need to constantly motivate yourself and stay away from distractions.
  • Good Time Management – Juggling employment and a doctoral degree requires a lot of focus, which means you may need a certain time to work on your schoolwork. This entails a lot of personal management and some sacrifices, but the results are guaranteed to be fruitful.
  • Open Communication – DBA’s encourage collaboration, so you may need to reach out to a few classmates. Additionally, it would be advantageous to keep an open line with your instructor to get career guidance and academic help.

The remaining years of the program are spent conducting independent research, working on co-authored publications, and writing the dissertation. Students join these programs from a wide range of backgrounds, from consulting to engineering. Many applicants possess liberal arts degrees, as there is not a requirement to possess a business degree before joining the program

The PhD in Business Economics provides students the opportunity to study in both Harvard’s world-class Economics Department and Harvard Business School. In the micro track, students focus on the study of interpersonal relationships within organizations and the effects that groups have on individuals. Students in the macro track use sociological methods to examine organizations, groups, and markets as a whole, including topics such as the influence of individuals on organizational change, or the relationship between social missions and financial objectives. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program includes core disciplinary training in sociology or psychology, as well as additional coursework in organizational behavior.
