Our BA English Literature and Creative Writing programme allows you to study all periods of literature in English, from the Anglo-Saxon period to the twenty-first century, together with training in Creative Writing. We cover all genres, from contemporary and historical fiction to poetry, drama, film and music.

The Creative Writing element of the programme provides you with the opportunity to progress from introductory modules on reading and writing creatively to specialised work within specific forms and genres such as fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction and scriptwriting, culminating in the production of an extended collection of creative work.

We accept a combination of A-levels and other qualifications, as well as equivalent international qualifications subject to entry requirements. Typical offers are as follows:

Extended/International Project Qualification: Applicants with grade A in the EPQ/IPQ will typically receive an offer one grade lower than the standard offer. Please note that any subject specific requirements must still be met.

Course structure

This is a full-time undergraduate degree that takes three years to complete. You will study modules worth a total of 360 credits split evenly over the three years.

You must pass each academic year before proceeding to the next stage of your studies.

The modules shown are an example of the typical curriculum and will be reviewed prior to the 2024/2025 academic year. The final modules will be published by September 2024.

Year one is a foundation year, designed to equip you with the skills and practice for advanced study and to give you an overview that will enable you to make informed choices from the modules available in years two and three while laying down the foundations of your engagement with Creative Writing.

You will take three core modules and three optional modules. These will provide you with a solid base for the next two years of your degree by offering the opportunity to develop your critical and creative skills through reading, analysing and producing imaginative work across a wide array of different genres.

In year two you select from a range of period-, genre- or theme-based modules in which you will build on the foundation year, reading a selection of texts in their historical and cultural contexts.

You also continue your studies of Creative Writing within a variety of forms and genres, including fiction, poetry and scriptwriting.

In your final year you will choose from a range of more specialised modules, allowing you to pursue interests developed in the previous two years. You will engage with current issues in research and scholarship, enabling you further to develop analytical and presentation skills that employers will value, as well as equipping you for postgraduate study.

You also undertake a portfolio dissertation in Creative Writing that complements your work in the English Literature modules and allows you to produce an extended piece of writing in a specialist genre. The dissertation also allows you to develop research and project management skills.

The University is committed to providing a wide range of module options where possible, but please be aware that whilst every effort is made to offer choice this may be limited in certain circumstances. This is due to the fact that some modules have limited numbers of places available, which are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, while others have minimum student numbers required before they will run, to ensure that an appropriate quality of education can be delivered; some modules require students to have already taken particular subjects, and others are core or required on the programme you are taking. Modules may also be limited due to timetable clashes, and although the University works to minimise disruption to choice, we advise you to seek advice from the relevant School on the module choices available.

Teaching stresses the importance of the way texts interact with their contexts, and each module is designed to encourage you to focus on a number of specific texts and to prepare carefully a considered answer to specific topics dealt with in the module, while the workshops in Creative Writing ask you to engage with the critical creative process through evaluative discussion of peer writing.

Learning activities will vary from module to module as appropriate, but may include such activities as: interactive lectures, seminar discussions of prepared texts/topics, student individual or group presentations, small-group work within seminars, peer review in workshops, translation classes, formative writing exercises, journal entries, and film viewings.

You are expected to do the reading and other relevant preparation to enable you to participate fully in these activities. You are encouraged to explore the resources of the library as appropriate. For the workshops, peer work is previously circulated and you are expected to bring prepared comments as part of the exchange of ideas informing the sessions.

How will I be supported?

You will be assigned a personal tutor and will meet him/her for regular academic progress meetings (one per semester). There is a form to fill in before each Academic Progress meeting which is designed to help you reflect on the written feedback and the reasons for the marks you have received from the previous round of assessment. You will discuss this feedback and your reflections on it with your personal tutor.

In addition, all staff have weekly office hours during teaching weeks and you may make appointments to see your personal tutor or module leaders on a one-to-one basis about any issues. Staff may also be contacted by email.

Key information for each module will be available on our Virtual Learning Environment, Learning Central, together with appropriate additional learning resources, such as lecture notes and slides.

The University offers a range of services including the Careers Service, the Counselling Service, the Disability and Dyslexia Service, the Student Support Service, and excellent libraries and resource centres.

Written feedback is provided on both formative and summative assessment and you are encouraged to discuss your ideas with module tutors in seminars and, where appropriate, on a one-to-one basis in office hours.

Your achievement and progress are also discussed in regular progress meetings with personal tutors.

How will I be assessed?

All English Literature modules offer you the opportunity to undertake unassessed formative work appropriate to the module. Most modules are assessed by essay and/or examination, but some include other forms of assessment such as journal entries, a portfolio, or presentations.

Creative Writing modules are assessed by short portfolios of creative work that include a critical commentary. The assessment strategy is structured to lead you from formative thinking throughout the module towards the production of an informed critical/creative response.

Your final year project consists of a substantial, independently-researched and original portfolio of creative work, produced under the guidance of a member of staff, in the field of fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, playwriting, or screenwriting. The portfolio includes a critical commentary on the work produced.

Our graduates commonly go on to pursue careers in freelance writing, academia, teaching, publishing, arts management and administration, public relations and journalism.

Many employers welcome graduates with high-level literacy skills. Together with such skills, our students develop the kind of insights into the creative process that are valued by business, from design to sales.

Imaginative writing transfers readily into advertising and tourism as well as advertising companies. As a graduate of our School you will have a portfolio of creative writing to demonstrate to potential employers.

Our graduates find employment in HR, the book trade, professional areas such as librarianship but also local government and other areas of public life concerned with communication.

We have an established portfolio of internships with Wales-based literary/cultural magazines for which students can apply.

Creative Writing (Full-time) (MA)

Creative Writing is an increasingly popular subject at degree level and beyond.

It assists students in developing their passion for creative expression into successful writing (and we encourage and equip our graduates to publish their work).

It also supports independent writing projects that require both flexibility and sustained, self-motivated research - excellent training for a range of working lives and the bedrock of any entrepreneurial career.

The ability to produce good clear writing is an invaluable skill in a world awash with reports, from teaching to management.

Communicating clearly through precise language prepares students for a range of careers, from writing-based advertising or journalism, to related professions such as publishing, publicity or arts administration.

Creative Writing is well established at UWTSD. Our MA in Creative Writing was the first in Wales in 1997 and joint and single honours undergraduate programs soon followed.

As a result of their professional mentoring several former students now work in publishing and associated industries and we are proud of our track record of student publishing and award-winning success — we have at least one a year and many go on to further successful publications.

The University has an excellent track record for the study of Creative Writing. Our Masters programme in Creative Writing has attracted students from a range of backgrounds and experiences — from recent graduates to mature students with a wealth of life experience.

The course comprises 4 taught modules which focus on advanced writing skills, approaches to research for the writer, publishing contexts and wider opportunities, and workshopping. In the second part of the course students get the opportunity to work on an independent project of their choosing with a practitioner

This programme is designed for committed writers who wish to complete significant pieces of work and generally broaden their experience as writers.

The programme offers participants an opportunity to work with a range of writers across a number of genres, both campus based and visiting. It also introduces students to understanding how publishing works.

Modules focus on acquiring an understanding of creativity and genre, research skills for writers, and self determined projects. The creative project/dissertation element of the course allows students to develop work of a publishable standard with an individual tutor.

Applicants may have achieved a 2:1 degree in Creative Writing or a cognate discipline (those with a 2:2 may be considered for entry to a Postgraduate Diploma in the first instance). Other applicants without a first degree but with a level of experience are also encouraged to apply. In all cases a writing sample and interview will form the major part of the application process.

Assessment Methods

The programme’s assessment strategy consists of formative and summative assessments. Students are assessed on a range of creative and reflective writings, including creative tasks, reflective journal, review, and research essay.

Assessment for the programme has been informed by studies in Creative Writing Education as well as the subject benchmark statements of the National Association of Writers in Education (NAWE, 2008) and the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA, 2016).

The decision to have 4 modules in part one - two assessed by portfolio and two through an individual research project – aims to hone particular writing skills and develop a larger sweep of focus. These modules prepare the student to manage the research and writing required for the Dissertation length Creative Project.

The first portfolio module presents the student with a range of different approaches to writing and a range of different tasks; the second introduces the writer to opportunities and ways of functioning as a professional writer. There is a similar stepped progression in the two research modules: the first focuses on researching and writing around an individual subject; the second broadens out to include context in the form of place or time. All require some meditation on, and reassessment of, writerly strategies employed in the practice.

The Assessment Strategy is designed in relation to the Learning Outcomes of the MA Programme and the individual component of that programme which is the module. Links are made throughout to the value of each assessment in enhancing the employability skills of graduates, both as professional writers and as writers applying their skills in an appropriate field. For Creative Writers a heightened awareness of linguistic pattern and meaning, high-level written and spoken communication skills and the invaluable skills of listening and discussion essential to any management position.

The second purpose is that of developing highly skilled and flexible graduates with training in the key skills required for any high-level job: the abilities to discriminate, absorb, manage, and process complex information, to formulate and construct complex arguments that may be pitched appropriately to different audiences. As the study and practice of written communication, Graduates will be trained in good presentation and communication skills, particularly the skills of listening and co-operating without losing focus.

Additional Costs

There will be no mandatory additional costs to study beyond the payment of tuition. Students should be prepared to incur the basic costs associated with study such as transport and may wish to purchase coffees, snacks or other sundry items on campus.

Many students also choose to invest in study support tools such as laptops over the course of their study, though this is not a programme requirement. Any activities related to study or student life which bear a cost beyond tuition will be optional, and the expense shall be clearly communicated to students at the time of registration.

Career Opportunities

Through its links to a host of subjects including Drama, Media, Journalism, Film Studies and Theatre Studies, Creative Writing offers a range of possible writing opportunities. Our location in west Wales enables us to draw on opportunities in a developing area of film and television production here.

Students are introduced to understanding the world of the self-employed writer by being introduced to publishing (from approaching publishers, the steps of publication, the necessity of documents such as AI sheets), self-presentation in readings, collaborative, cross-disciplinary projects, residencies etc.

One of the biggest areas of growth is viral advertising narratives and there are also collaborative opportunities in games design and narrative. Links with Literature or History can lead to other possibilities, for example to careers involving narratives associated with archives and museums.

More widely the focus on both the structure and detail of language develops skills essential to any high-level graduate employment: to formulate and write clear and coherent narratives that present complex information to mixed (or at least varied) audiences. In addition, the programme focus on the respect and listening skills of the workshop is equally valuable. These skills are essential to any of the professions that deal directly with people. These may include social work, probation services, mental health advocates etc.

Tŷ Newydd is the National Writing Centre of Wales. Tŷ Newydd’s residential creative writing courses, retreats and masterclasses guide and support writers at all levels of their career to achieve excellence and encourage innovation. Every week a new group of individuals come to Tŷ Newydd to spend time together under the tutelage of professional writers.

The varied programme caters for different abilities, ages and interests, and courses cover many genres, forms and styles, including poetry, fiction, non-fiction, scriptwriting, nature writing, illustrating, storytelling, yoga and more. In addition we work alongside tutors and teachers to create bespoke courses for educational groups.

Tŷ Newydd Writing Centre is run by Literature Wales , the national company for the development of literature.

International Priorities

Tŷ Newydd has historically worked in partnership with the Wales Literature Exchange and an European network of literature and translation centres to develop a programme of activity to promote creative translation. In the wake of Brexit, 2017 will focus on reintroducing these initiatives with a focus on translating children’s literature between the languages of Europe, especially minority languages like the Welsh.

Tŷ Newydd’s open course programme attracts a few international participants annually, including the USA, Ireland, France, the Netherlands and Australia.

Tŷ Newydd’s flagship project Y Labordy (2014-15) was a new initiative for experienced Welsh language writers of theatre, film and TV to develop their ideas alongside some of the most respected scriptwriters and producers in their industry. The objective was to create a pool of contemporary writing talent with the capability of writing high calibre scripts for different media platforms and to broaden ability for writing from an international perspective. Contributors to the initiative included Jeppe Gjervig Gram, Lisa Albert and Rebecca Lenkiewicz. We hope to run a similar scheme again soon.

Key Strengths

Our beautiful centre in rural north Wales lends itself to residential gatherings, we can accommodate and cater for up to 25 guests. It’s a perfect location for courses, workshops, retreats, and small festivals. Although a peaceful retreat between the sea and the mountains, we’re also within reasonable driving distance from Manchester and Liverpool airports (2 hours) and close to the port of Holyhead for ferries from Dublin, Ireland (1 hour).

As part of Literature Wales, we have great links with multilingual authors who would be eager to take part in translating programmes, mentoring, and networking. We also work in close partnership with the publishing houses of Wales; Universities, and other establishments that might be useful for international partnerships.

What will I learn?

The breakdown below will provide you with an illustration of what you may study during the three year degree scheme.

This degree is based on our strongly held belief that in order to become a really great writer you need to be a good reader, whilst offering you the flexibility to develop as a writer across a range of creative modes. During your first year you will develop foundational skills in the interpretation and analysis of literary texts, alongside your study of basic writing skills. Throughout the course you will use your knowledge of literature and textual production in your own creative work, exploring the relationship between creative and critical practice.

In the first year you will discover:

a range of techniques for reading and writing fiction and poetry
modes of descriptive writing
the importance of plot
the use of dialogue
some key figures from literary history (from Shakespeare to the Brontës)
lesser known texts, and writers who are new-to-you
a variety of “ways of reading” and some theoretical approaches to textual analysis
“the critical commentary” and research skills for writers.

In the second year you will explore:

the theoretical approaches to, and the practice of, literary criticism
your own writing style, informed by your reading and research
a number of specialist topics chosen by you (these might focus on a specific genre (such as crime fiction), historical period (such as the Victorian era), or theme (such as “transpositions”).

On this degree programme, you will have the flexibility to take option modules from the departments of Film, Theatre and Television Studies, and Welsh and Celtic studies, both of which offer a number of creative writing modules in areas such as scriptwriting, writing for radio, writing for television and much more.

In the third year you will master:

theory for writers and the application of theoretical perspectives the production and critical evaluation of your own creative work
extended writing and independent research in your final year writing project (chosen and defined by you with the support of a published author)
your own specialisms drawn from a diverse range of option modules taught by writers in those fields. Our option modules include topics such as Elizabethan drama, the ghost story, queer fiction, writing for children, science fiction and fantasy, and much more.

How will I be taught?

Our course is delivered through a range of traditional and non-traditional settings with particular emphasis on workshops and discursive seminars. Lectures are not the norm but are used when it is essential to convey specific, knowledge-centred, material. One-to-one tutorials will also be a regular feature in your timetable, particularly towards the end of your programme of study.

You will be assessed through portfolio submissions, essays and, on some modules, traditional examinations and presentations.

Your Creative Writing Experience

You will study a set number of optional 20-credit modules, before undertaking a 60-credit creative writing dissertation in the second part of the course. Varied modules include long fiction, writing radio drama, screenwriting, James Joyce and literary theory, global media and comparative journalism. Drama writing is a particular teaching strength, and contains the relatively new and unexplored field of Dramaturgy. You have the chance to write for online journal The Swansea Review , student-run online journal The Siren , and The Waterfront student newspaper. On the annual Writers’ Day at the Dylan Thomas Centre, you can meet with editors, agents, publishers and writers, to discuss the finer details of publication and the craft of writing. You will also benefit from guest visits by figures from the world of arts and publishing and free membership of Literature Wales, the national literature promotion agency.

Creative Writing Employment Opportunities

As well as significantly improving your writing skills, you should develop oral communication skills by learning to present your ideas in a range of formats. Graduates from this course enter a range of creative industries including publishing, broadcasting, marketing and advertising.

We are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience, using the most effective learning and teaching approaches, carefully tailored to suit the specific needs of your course. Our courses consist of in-person, on-campus teaching, enabling full engagement with your lecturers and fellow students.

Practical skills sessions, seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and presentations. However, our approach also includes the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching.

Online learning may take place ‘live’ using software such as Zoom, allowing you to interact with the lecturer and peers and to ask questions. Lecture recordings also allow for more flexibility to revisit material, to revise for assessments and to enhance learning outside of the classroom. Some modules have extra resources in our virtual learning environment (Canvas), such as videos, slides and quizzes enabling further flexible study.

Students study two compulsory modules and four optional modules in part-one and a dissertation, a portfolio in a genre of their choosing in part-two.

There are opportunities for Welsh speakers to study some elements of this postgraduate course through the medium of Welsh but there is not yet enough provision to reach 40 credits in each year. The Programme Director can outline to you what is available in Welsh.

Claire Syder is a tutor of Creative Writing, offering online and classroom based courses, workshops, and residential weekends.

Claire obtained a B.A. in English Literature as a mature student at Cardiff University. She works as an Adult Tutor teaching Creative Writing and has previously worked for South Wales University as a Tutor and Development Officer.

Claire is an experienced performance poet who has read her work at many venues throughout England, Wales, Ireland and New York. Her first poetry was published in a chapbook, Witness, by Stonebridge, New Century Poets, 2001. Her work was included in the anthology This is Salem and World Book Day, published by Stonebridge, 2004. Her first poetry collection, Time Cracks Open the Universe, was published by Stonebridge 2004. Claire's latest Travel Poetry and Photography collection, Behind the Solid Stone Wall was published 2016.

Reading and Writing Poetry

This course will be looking at different forms of poetry. We will explore the ballad, free verse, persona poetry, the villanelle and Welsh poetry. The workshops will enable you to develop new pieces of poetry, that will be shared with the group in an enjoyable and informal atmosphere.

Reading and Writing Short Stories

This course will be looking at different ways of telling stories, looking closely at techniques and their effects; learning about beginnings and endings, plot, view point, characterisation and setting. The workshops will enable you to develop new short stories and discover your own voice in this genre. New pieces of work will be shared with the group in an enjoyable and informal atmosphere.

Creative Writing

This course welcomes everyone who has an interest in exploring their creative writing; developing their own voice through writing poetry, prose pieces and monologues. The group will sample and discuss various texts. Creative writing workshops will enable you to develop new pieces of work, that will be shared with the group in an informal and enjoyable atmosphere.

Travel Writing

The course explores writing creatively about travelling, and about place and developing your own voice in the genre. Extracts from contemporary travel writing will be discussed, drawing around issues of cultural and historical context. The creative writing element will be taught through workshops, in which you can respond to set tasks, and discuss new pieces of work.

Monologues and Persona Poetry

During this course we will discuss a selection of monologues and persona poetry. Through workshops we will develop full rounded authentic characters giving them a voice. New pieces of work will be shared with the group in an informal atmosphere.

Enjoy an inspirational creative writing day, travelling through the Black Mountains, visiting the Skirrid Inn,Llanthony Priory and exploring the stunning landscape.

The creative writing day will include a historical walk, exploring the beautiful landscape the Guardian overlook. We will visit the Ty Ebbw Fach, formerly the Old Coach and Horses public house, Bethany Chapel and the museum.

Accommodation and Creative Writing workshops are included in the price.

How One Author Pushed the Limits of AI Copyright

Last October, I received an email with a hell of an opening line: “I fired a nuke at the US Copyright Office this morning.”

The message was from Elisa Shupe, a 60-year-old retired US Army veteran who had just filed a copyright registration for a novel she’d recently self-published. She’d used OpenAI's ChatGPT extensively while writing the book. Her application was an attempt to compel the US Copyright Office to overturn its policy on work made with AI, which generally requires would-be copyright holders to exclude machine-generated elements.

That initial shot didn’t detonate—a week later, the USCO rejected Shupe’s application—but she ultimately won out. The agency changed course earlier this month after Shupe appealed, granting her copyright registration for AI Machinations: Tangled Webs and Typed Words, a work of autofiction self-published on Amazon under the pen name Ellen Rae.

The novel draws from Shupe’s eventful life , including her advocacy for more inclusive gender recognition. Its registration provides a glimpse of how the USCO is grappling with artificial intelligence , especially as more people incorporate AI tools into creative work. It is among the first creative works to receive a copyright for the arrangement of AI-generated text.

“We’re seeing the Copyright Office struggling with where to draw the line,” intellectual property lawyer Erica Van Loon, a partner at Nixon Peabody, says. Shupe’s case highlights some of the nuances of that struggle—because the approval of her registration comes with a significant caveat.

The USCO’s notice granting Shupe copyright registration of her book does not recognize her as author of the whole text as is conventional for written works. Instead she is considered the author of the “selection, coordination, and arrangement of text generated by artificial intelligence.” This means no one can copy the book without permission, but the actual sentences and paragraphs themselves are not copyrighted and could theoretically be rearranged and republished as a different book.

The agency backdated the copyright registration to October 10, the day that Shupe originally attempted to register her work. It declined to comment on this story. “The Copyright Office does not comment on specific copyright registrations or pending applications for registration,” Nora Scheland, an agency spokesperson says. President Biden’s executive order on AI last fall asked the US Patent and Trademark Office to make recommendations on copyright and AI to the White House in consultation with the Copyright Office, including on the “scope of protection for works produced using AI.”

Although Shupe’s limited copyright registration is notable, she originally asked the USCO to open a more significant path to copyright recognition for AI-generated material. “I seek to copyright the AI-assisted and AI-generated material under an ADA exemption for my many disabilities,” she wrote in her original copyright application. Shupe believes fervently that she was only able to complete her book with the assistance of generative AI tools. She says she has been assessed as 100 percent disabled by the Department of Veterans Affairs and struggles to write due to cognitive impairment related to conditions including bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, and a brain stem malformation.

She is proud of the finished work and sees working with a text generator as a different but no less worthwhile method of expressing thoughts. “You don't just hit ‘generate’ and get something worthy of publishing. That may come in the future, but we're still far from it,” she says, noting that she spent upwards of 14 hours a day working on her draft.

After her initial registration was refused, Shupe connected with Jonathan Askin, founder of the Brooklyn Law Incubator and Policy Clinic at Brooklyn Law School, which takes pro bono cases centered on emerging tech and policy questions. Askin and Brooklyn Law student Sofia Vescovo began working on Shupe’s case and filed an appeal with the USCO in January.

The appeal built on Shupe’s argument about her disabilities, saying she should be granted copyright because she used ChatGPT as an assistive technology to communicate, comparing her use of OpenAI’s chatbot to an amputee using a prosthetic leg. The appeal claimed that the USCO “discriminated against her because of her disability.”

The Brooklyn Law appeal also claimed that Shupe should be granted copyright for compiling the book—that is, doing the work of selecting and organizing the snippets of AI-generated text. It provided an exhaustive log of how Shupe prompted ChatGPT, showing the custom commands she created and the edits she made.

It includes a side-by-side comparison of the unedited machine output and the final version of Shupe’s book. On a sentence level, she adjusted almost every line in some way, from changes in word choice to structure. One example describing a character in the novel: “Mark eyed her, a complex mix of concern and annoyance evident in his gaze” becomes “Mark studied her, his gaze reflecting both worry and irritation.”

The appeal cites another recent AI copyright decision about the graphic novel Zarya and the Dawn , which incorporates AI-generated images created with Midjourney. In February 2023, author Kris Kashtanova was granted copyright to the selection and arrangement of AI-generated images in the text, even though they were denied copyright on the specific images themselves.

When the USCO granted Shupe’s request for copyright, it did not address the disability argument put forth but agreed with the appeal’s other argument. Shupe could be considered the author of “selection, coordination, and arrangement of text generated by artificial intelligence,” the agency wrote, backdating her copyright registration to October 10, 2023, the day that Shupe had originally attempted to register her work. That gives her authorship of the work overall, prohibiting unauthorized wholecloth reproduction of the entire book, but not copyright protection over the actual sentences of the novel.

“Overall, we are extremely satisfied,” says Vescovo. The team felt that copyrighting the book’s compilation would provide peace of mind against out-and-out reproduction of the work. “We really wanted to make sure we could get her this protection right now.” The Brooklyn Law team hope Shupe’s approval can serve as a blueprint for other people experimenting with AI text generation who want some copyright protection.

“I’m going to take this as a win for now,” Shupe says, even though she knows that “in some ways, it’s a compromise.” She maintains that the way she uses ChatGPT more closely resembles a collaboration than an automated output, and that she should be able to copyright the actual text of the book.

Matthew Sag, a professor of law and artificial intelligence at Emory University, calls what the USCO granted Shupe “thin copyright”—protection against full-fledged duplication of materials that doesn’t stop someone from rearranging the paragraphs into a different story. “This is the same kind of copyright you would get in an anthology of poetry that you didn’t write,” Sag says.

Erica Van Loon agrees. “It’s hard to imagine something more narrow,” she says.

Shupe is part of a larger movement to make copyright law friendlier to AI and the people who use it. The Copyright Office, which both administers the copyright registration system and advises Congress, the judiciary system, and other governmental agencies on copyright matters, plays a central role in determining how works that use AI are treated.

Although it continues to define authorship as an exclusively human endeavor , the USCO has demonstrated openness to registering works that incorporate AI elements. The USCO said in February that it has granted registration to over 100 works with AI incorporated; a search by WIRED found over 200 copyright registration applications explicitly disclosing AI elements, including books, songs, and visual artworks.

One such application came from Tyler Partin, who works for a chemical manufacturer. He recently registered a tongue-in-cheek song he created about a coworker, but excluded lyrics that he spun up using ChatGPT from his registration. Partin sees the text generator as a tool, but ultimately doesn’t think he should take credit for its output. Instead, he applied only for the music rather than the accompanying words. “I didn’t do that work,” he says.

But there are others who share Shupe’s perspective and agree with her mission, and believe that AI-generated materials should be registrable. Some high-profile attempts to register AI-generated artworks have resulted in USCO refusals, like artist Jason M. Allen’s effort to get his award-winning artwork Théâtre D’opéra Spatial copyrighted last year. AI researcher Stephen Thaler has been on a mission for years to prove that he should be entitled to copyright protections for a work made by the AI system he developed.

Thaler is currently appealing a ruling in the US last year that rebuffed his attempt to obtain copyright. Ryan Abbott, the lead attorney on the case, founded the Artificial Inventor Project , a group of intellectual property lawyers who file test cases seeking legal protections for AI-generated works.

Abbott is a supporter of Shupe’s mission, although he’s not a member of her legal team. He isn’t happy that the copyright registration excludes the AI-generated work itself. “We all see it as a very big problem,” he says.

Shupe and her legal helpers don’t have plans to push the ADA argument further by contesting the USCO’s decision, but it’s an issue that is far from settled. “The best path is probably to lobby Congress for an addition to the ADA statute,” says Askin. “There's a potential for us to draft some legislation or testimony to try to move Congress in that direction.”

Shupe’s qualified victory is still a significant marker in how the Copyright Office is grappling with what it means to be an author in the age of AI. She hopes going public with her efforts will reduce what she sees as a stigma against using AI as a creative tool. Her metaphorical nuke didn’t go off, but she has nonetheless advanced her cause. “I haven't been this excited since I unboxed a Commodore 64 back in the 1980s and, after a lot of noise, connected to a distant computer,” she says.

This is a beautiful place and an ideal environment to concentrate and write. I had heard so much about Tŷ Newydd but it surpassed all expectations!

Tŷ Newydd is a wonderfully warm and welcoming place. It’s a space that allows you to connect with your writing and focus entirely on that. The location, staff and house all come together to create the perfect home away from home for creativity and inspiration.

On the final evening of our course, one student hit ‘send’ on a submission to a literary agent and the whole room cheered for her. That says everything you need to know about the course. As a tutor, it was a real privilege to be part of such an inspiring few days.

A warm welcoming writing centre with lots of space and fantastic grounds. We had rich discussions on writing about climate change; stayed up late discussing denial, anger, grief for the world and hope for the future. A few bottles of wine, candlelight and delicious food.

A weekend at Tŷ Newydd is an escape to a romantic literary past. The modern day falls away, forgotten. What remains is the whitewashed house, the gardens and the stretch of sea in the distance. What remains is the writing and the inspiration that powers it. And what remains are the new friends experiencing the same thing at the same time.

I always come away from Tŷ Newydd feeling enthused and creative. It’s a tonic, a fresh eye on life. A rest for the mind and a fire for the heart. It makes me want to craft words, tell stories, write.

Do it! As well as the focused period of writing, and excellent tuition, you will make a lot of contacts with other writers and these can be invaluable in exploring mutual opportunities for publication and readings. You will gather a lot of material for drawing on later. You will enjoy the wonderful Dwyfor valley, the coast and surrounding countryside. The accommodation is comfortable ... and the food very enjoyable! (Sorry, that’s longer than a sentence!)

Tŷ Newydd holds a special place in my heart. I’ve grown through every residential course I’ve attended and to return as a tutor is a real honour. It’s a delight to work in such creative surroundings and to have the opportunity to practice my Cymraeg.

Tŷ Newydd is my favourite writers’ centre – warm, welcoming, like a home from home, and the setting is stunning – sea views, huge gardens, picturesque river walks. You are doing a great job and huge contribution to the literary life, attracting many talented and promising writers who are a dream to teach – thank you!

The location itself is crucial to the course, offering as it does a quiet, serene venue for people to get down to work free of outside influences and the stress of daily life. The peace and the layout of the house – lots of nooks and corners for people to disappear into to write – means that even with 16 people on the course we at no time felt cramped or under each other’s feet.

My thanks as always to the staff at Tŷ Newydd for their unobtrusive but supportive presence throughout the course. They make it a pleasure to be there.

It is my favourite place for teaching creative writing anywhere in these islands – I love the setting and the atmosphere it creates, and the groups I’ve taught over the years have never been anything but amenable and good fun – and talented!

And if anyone wanted proof of the Tŷ Newydd effect, and the quality of writing it can produce, get a hold of the anthology produced at the end of the week, ‘Tales from Tŷ Newydd’, and read the ‘Letter from David Lloyd George’ that a school pupil, aged 11, wrote in twenty five minutes, in the library, on a Thursday morning. It’s extraordinary!

My favorite writing centre by far! The setting and the house are so conducive to creative work. Being surrounded by beauty, natural and home-wise, makes all the difference.

Tŷ Newydd offers an unforgettable experience for writers. It is unique among writing centres I know in its beautiful, picturesque seaside location. Working there as a tutor was a greatly rewarding experience. It was brilliant to see how writers developed during the week, and how quickly a sense of a writing community developed among people who started the week as strangers. As a tutor, it was a thrill to be inspired by the students’ work and by the atmosphere of the place. This is very definitely one of the best experiences I’ve had as a writer and teacher.

Tŷ Newydd is a very special place. Writers often seek inspiration and it is difficult not to find it here. Inside, the house is handsome, comfortable and heaving with books – not to mention chef Tony’s mouth-watering creations. Outside, the natural setting is extraordinarily beautiful, a world of mountains and rivers, woodland walks and the stretching sea. As a writerly escape from the busy world, a place of reflection and laughter, it takes some beating.

Wales’s best kept secret. The house has loads of character and is labyrinthine – so many nooks and crannies and the best library ever. You instantly feel at home. The food is home cooked and wonderful and the staff welcoming. And a 15-minute walk away is an unspoilt rocky beach with a path all the way to Cricieth. If you seek inspiration you will find it here: in the workshops at Ty Newydd; on the bardic chair in the garden; all along the wild coastline.
