5 Quick Tips For Better Design Studio Presentations

We’ve all been there. You’ve dedicated a tremendous amount of time and effort into your landscape design project, only to ramble or stutter your way through a studio presentation that leaves the instructor and jury thoroughly perplexed. Unfortunately, even the best design solutions can be ruined by poor presentations.

In this article, I will peak behind the curtain and provide 5 quick tips that professors and design critics look for to best help in your next studio presentation. As long as you put in the hard work and preparation, these tips can maximize the quality of the feedback you receive from jurors and showcase the best parts of your design.

Tip #1: Form Follows Function, Design Follows Process

When a juror first engages with your class’s studio assignment, they often are briefed on the main components of the project, but most likely have not spent the same level of time and dedication researching as much information as you have. Therefore, it is important to review your final design through a description of the processes you followed to arrive there, especially if you are one of the first few presenters. Not only will this help the jury better understand the project, but it will also provide a personal insight into how you tackled with design problem.

Most of the time when design critics look at your work, they are not only trying to provide advice on what you’ve created, but also on the decisions you made to get there. By taking them step by step (in an engaging and personable way) through your process, you will get better advice on how to adapt, modify, and better your future design work.

Tip #2: One In The Hand Is Worth Two In The Bush

Take a second, close your eyes, and think about being in the middle of a landscape. How would you describe it?

We experience things not only through sight, but also through fragrance (for example, the smell of blooming flowers), sounds (a vibrant city atmosphere or the peaceful woodland chirpings of birds), texture (the feel of a polished slate wall or gravel under your feet), and taste (salty ocean air).

In a standard design presentation, students usually only provide a visual example of their design either through a drawing on the wall or a three-dimensional model on a computer screen – but we experience landscapes much differently. I often advise students to show me examples (real physical specimens) of materials, plants, or products they wish to use.

The famous idiom, one in the hand is worth two in the bush, is applicable here.

You can show me many pictures of a wall stone, but if you really want me to understand it, let me feel it. By bringing in small items to your presentation, not only will it show the jury a level of professionalism, but it will also better support the thoughtfulness of your choices.

Tip #3: Details Matter – But Only So Much

Think about a movie you recently watched. Do you remember which color sneakers the main character was wearing? Probably not – but why?

Well, when you are the viewer of a theatrical presentation, you are processing a great deal of information all at once. Subconsciously, you simply dismiss and remove parts of the film that are irrelevant or of little importance as they do not assist in the main story’s progression – in this example, the specific color of sneakers. If someone were to ask you whether the movie was good, I highly doubt you would say “Yes, it was great – except for the sneakers the main character was wearing.”

This idea relates directly to the format and emphasis your design presentation. You have probably spent countless hours reviewing and meticulously detailing every aspect of your landscape for the design project, down to every single last plant cultivar.

However, when you present your work, every minute matters. You should not spend too much time describing every agonizing detail of the project.

First, it would be a very boring presentation to watch. And second, most of the the details will not convince the juror on the success or failure of your project.

The jury is there to provide fresh-eyes and honest professional feedback from a short presentation. Give them the best highlights of your project and the main “plot” – to use the movie reference.

Your instructor (assuming he/she has been the one working with you through your semester) will be the one reviewing your final design in more detail afterward and will surely see the level of attention you gave to your design along with any smaller details.  There is no need to spend presentation time on details worth skipping.

Tip #4: Body Language Matters

A few years ago I had a student who had a mastery of landscape sketching. With even simplistic lines she was able to showcase movement, gesture, and seasonality within her drawings. But whenever she pinned her designs to the wall for presentations, everything fell flat.

She would speak with a dull monotone rhythm, shoulders slumped, reading off a concise and direct script of notecards she carried. As if intentionally rushing through her presentation, she would never look up at the audience or provide any flourishes of detail. She did a disservice to her design.

Whether you like it or not, your posture and tone matters when speaking publicly. This is exceedingly important in the landscape design profession when you often need to sell a client on a design.

Advice I often give students is three-fold:

• Speak to the jurors directly – do not face your board. Try to make eye contact with each juror at least once during your presentation.
• Don’t be afraid to be personable and self-deprecating with the jury. Often students feel as if they are “on-trial” and being judged. Remember, the jury is there to HELP YOU. Even if they are seasoned professionals, they are all regular people that are just trying to best serve you as an educator. Adding a personal anecdote or a funny little story can go a long way to make a connection in your favor.
• Move Around – but with intention. This is not the State of The Union address and unless you have a podium in front of you, you can and should move freely around your design plans. If you have a laser-pointer, use it.

Otherwise make sure you are pointing to the specific areas on the plan you are reviewing.  But make sure you have your design boards and presentation outlined ahead of time, the last thing you would want to do is constantly hop back and forth between drawing boards throughout the whole presentation.

Nobody is saying you need to do cartwheels in front of your project to express how happy you are with it, but if you aren’t enthusiastic about your own work, the jury won’t be either. Remember, the purpose of these design presentations is to prepare you for client interactions, so even if you had a very difficult time with the project, you need to present a confident and positive disposition to the audience.

Tip #5: Separate The Personal From The Professional

I remember my second studio presentation as a lowly undergraduate landscape architecture student with great clarity. I put tremendous effort into my design, my graphics, and my presentation. The problem was – the design stunk!

At the end of my presentation, my professor just looked at me and said “Wow – there are a lot of problems here…” From there he continued for about 20 minutes to rip my project apart. I was devasted. It felt soul crushing.

All designers have gone through this type of humbling public criticism before. And if you haven’t, you are one of the unlucky ones – believe me. Just like a broken bone that heals stronger than it once was, so too is your pride and confidence. You will be a better designer by shaking off the negative feedback, brushing off the dirt, and trying again.

I realize how difficult it can be when receiving criticism for a project you worked so hard on – but that is the main point of a studio course. If an instructor offers no constructive criticism, then he/she is doing a bad job preparing the young student designers for the professional world.

It’s important for students to realize ( speaking as a Professor here ) that it is our JOB to give you criticism. Without it, you wouldn’t grow as a designer.

The feedback you receive from jurors should not be taken personally. It is a professional critique that would be similar to conversations you may receive in a design office or from a client. Take it with your chin up.

If you still can’t get past the personal feelings tied to your designs, I have some final advice.

This will garner no love from seasoned designers or landscape architects – but it is the truth and needs to be said. Here it goes…

Landscape architecture is not everything.

There I said it.

The profession of landscape architecture is a noble pursuit and one which I wholeheartedly love. But let’s be honest – we are not medical professionals saving lives on a daily basis. It’s ok to make mistakes, as long as you learn from them. So don’t take criticism too harshly.

With those tips in mind, I hope that they are helpful in preparing you for your next design presentation. As long as you work hard and stay dedicated to the project’s mission, I am sure your next studio assignment will go swimmingly.

line+ studio's lotus-shaped dynamic building in changsha opens up its outer skin like petals

Lotus by xiang river pioneers dynamic architecture in changsha.

line+ studio ‘s Co-Founder and Chief Architect Zhu Peidong collaborated with RoboticPlus.AI to create Lotus by the Xiangjiang River in Changsha, China ‘s first dynamic architecture. This project integrates interdisciplinary technologies and adaptive changes, pushing the boundaries of traditional architecture and offering new possibilities for future spatial usage.

Located on the Xiang River’s banks in Changsha, the project balances urban viewing and landmark attributes. Due to riverbank vegetation obstructing the site, achieving sufficient height was necessary for scenic views and landmark status. However, simply elevating the structure could block surrounding sightlines, impacting the riverside community’s commercial value. The interior space adapts to varying privacy and openness requirements, responding dynamically to different spatial states required for activities or events. The design targets dynamic adjustments in spatial elevation and changes in transparency/privacy, using vertical movement and the opening/closing of the outer skin. This creates an integration of architectural structure, landscape interface, and spatial experience.

line+ studio collaborates with RoboticPlus.AI on the project

The building’s concept developed by line+ studio involves elevating the main space for viewing and meetings, creating presentation and concealment space forms. An industrial design approach determined the building consists of the main space and movable mechanical devices. Vertical displacement alters the connection between the main space and different floors, facilitating circulation transitions. The observation hall ascends from the corridor to the rooftop level for open display, with the deployable skin unfolding to create a transparent viewing perspective. For closed folding, the hall descends, and the skin contracts to form a private space. The deployable skin, divided into nine sections, is optimized based on the overlap of ‘petals’ and the opening angle, resulting in a combination of four outer pieces and five inner pieces, all adorned with rounded hexagonal edges, using transparent ETFE membrane as the main material. The observation hall evolves from a truncated conical base, enveloped by double-curved glass.

A complex load-bearing system ensures stability and dynamic effects, integrating steel structure, glass curtain walls, and MEP components. The main structure features a rigid chassis at the base, with top beams and flat trusses along the perimeter. Columns are integrated with the glass curtain wall mullions, forming a unified column system. Firefighting, drainage, air conditioning, and other equipment components are integrated into the column system, with pipes routed through minimal stress points. The roof system accommodates windows, smoke extraction, firefighting, and ventilation. The dynamic mechanical technology uses a ‘hydraulic scissor brace + flexible column’ system, ensuring stability, comfort, safety, and maintainability. The deployable skin’s dynamic effect is achieved through an intelligent linkage system, allowing for different levels of petal opening based on programmed settings.

Lotus by the Xiangjiang River project leverages new technologies

Interdisciplinary knowledge exchange transforms traditional construction into an interactive working method. Line+ collaborates with RoboticPlus.AI for full-process digital design optimization, intelligent factory component production, and prefabricated construction installation. Digital technology and optimization algorithms integrate Rhino and Revit with RoboticPlus.AI’s RoBIM software, simulating model installation for all steel structures. The BIM model undergoes precision refinement, achieving LOD400 accuracy, and connects directly to component production factories. Intelligent flexible production uses RoBIM for data exchange between processing equipment, automating CNC production. Virtual construction simulation plans optimize construction sequences and ensure project timelines.

Lotus by the Xiangjiang River aims to create a new experiential urban public space through industrial device design and construction. Utilizing digital modeling, simulation, and smart construction, it breaks traditional architectural limitations, creating dynamic, fluid spaces. The rise of AI and new architectural industrialization trends are changing the relationship between architects and builders, empowering the urban environment and responding to rapid evolution with new architectural productivity.

The fastest, most secure Windows PCs ever built  

We introduced an all-new system architecture to bring the power of the CPU, GPU, and now a new high performance Neural Processing Unit (NPU) together. Connected to and enhanced by the large language models (LLMs) running in our Azure Cloud in concert with small language models (SLMs), Copilot+ PCs can now achieve a level of performance never seen before. They are up to 20x more powerful [1] and up to 100x as efficient [2] for running AI workloads and deliver industry-leading AI acceleration. They outperform Apple’s MacBook Air 15” by up to 58% in sustained multithreaded performance [3] , all while delivering all-day battery life.  With incredible efficiency, Copilot+ PCs can deliver up to 22 hours of local video playback or 15 hours of web browsing on a single charge. [4] That is up to 20% more battery in local video playback than the MacBook Air 15”. [5]

Windows now has the best implementation of apps on the fastest chip, starting with Qualcomm. We now offer more native Arm64 experiences than ever before, including our fastest implementation of Microsoft 365 apps like Teams, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive and OneNote. Chrome, Spotify, Zoom, WhatsApp, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Blender, Affinity Suite, DaVinci Resolve and many more now run​ natively on Arm to give you great performance with additional apps, like Slack, releasing later this year. In fact, 87% of the total app minutes people spend in apps today have native Arm versions. [6] With a powerful new emulator, Prism, your apps run great, whether native or emulated.

Every Copilot+ PC comes secured out of the box. The Microsoft Pluton Security processor will be enabled by default on all Copilot+ PCs and we have introduced a number of new features, updates and defaults to Windows 11 that make it easy for users to stay secure. Entirely new, powerful AI experiences   

Copilot+ PCs leverage powerful processors and multiple state-of-the-art AI models, including several of Microsoft’s world-class SLMs, to unlock a new set of experiences you can run locally, directly on the device. This removes previous limitations on things like latency, cost and even privacy to help you be more productive, creative and communicate more effectively.  

Recall instantly  

We set out to solve one of the most frustrating problems we encounter daily – finding something we know we have seen before on our PC. Today, we must remember what file folder it was stored in, what website it was on, or scroll through hundreds of emails trying to find it.   

Now with Recall, you can access virtually what you have seen or done on your PC in a way that feels like having photographic memory. Copilot+ PCs organize information like we do – based on relationships and associations unique to each of our individual experiences. This helps you remember things you may have forgotten so you can find what you’re looking for quickly and intuitively by simply using the cues you remember. [7]

You can scroll across time to find the content you need in your timeline across any application, website, document, or more. Interact intuitively using snapshots with screenray to help you take the next step using suggested actions based on object recognition. And get back to where you were, whether to a specific email in Outlook or the right chat in Teams.

Recall leverages your personal semantic index, built and stored entirely on your device. Your snapshots are yours; they stay locally on your PC. You can delete individual snapshots, adjust and delete ranges of time in Settings, or pause at any point right from the icon in the System Tray on your Taskbar. You can also filter apps and websites from ever being saved. You are always in control with privacy you can trust.

Cocreate with AI-powered image creation and editing, built into Windows

Since the launch of Image Creator, almost 10 billion images have been generated, helping more people bring their ideas to life easily by using natural language to describe what they want to create. Yet, today’s cloud offerings may limit the number of images you can create, keep you waiting while the artwork processes or even present privacy concerns. By using the Neural Processing Units (NPUs) and powerful local small language models, we are bringing innovative new experiences to your favorite creative applications like Paint and Photos.

Combine your ink strokes with text prompts to generate new images in nearly real time with Cocreator. As you iterate, so does the artwork, helping you more easily refine, edit and evolve your ideas. Powerful diffusion-based algorithms optimize for the highest quality output over minimum steps to make it feel like you are creating alongside AI. Explosions occurred in Moscow region, several settlements lost power

E xplosions were heard in the town of Lytkarino, Moscow region, tonight, November 23. Several settlements in the Moscow region are without power, according to Baza.

Around 1 a.m., local residents allegedly heard a bright flash from the substation. Afterward, the lights went out in the Lytkarivsky district. A fire reportedly broke out at the site of the explosion.

According to Russian media, power was lost in several settlements in the Moscow region.

It should be noted that Lytkarino is situated 30 kilometers from the Russian capital.

Shots fired in Russia

In 2023, the number of attacks in a number of regions of the Russian Federation by attack drones increased. Also, something often burns and explodes on the territory of Russia. Different regions, including Moscow, are under attack.

At the same time, Ukrainian intelligence has already warned residents of the Russian capital that they should hardly relax, as the number of drone attacks will only increase.

The red velvet rope implied exclusivity at Studio 54 back in the day. At fancy-schmancy events, it separates red carpet notables from mere onlookers and paparazzi. At the movies, the rope drops when it’s time to find your seat.

Two red velvet ropes are usually stanchions for crowd control, suggesting a queue for entry.

They seem a tad pretentious and a little silly at a new Naples restaurant.

After three visits to Warren American Whiskey Kitchen spanning December through last week, I never saw anyone lined up or near the velvet ropes that guide guests to the main entryway.

It's a misleading first impression because once inside the door, you’re likely to be treated very well at every touchpoint.

Back in December

A hunky fire blower, slithering showgirls and sequin-clad stilt walkers meant to entertain were part of my first visit several weeks after Warren officially opened in early December. It reminded me of Vegas meets Miami, but the effect was more Reno nightclub.

The food? Quite good and beautifully presented.

The noise level? Off the charts, so much so that the server misheard our order of short ribs, bringing ribeye instead. That was something I’d never order for two reasons: First, I find slabs of beef boring, and second, I feared the wrath of my editor seeing its $86 price tag when turning in my receipt.

We also didn't get our second round of cocktails in a timely manner because the bar area was so jammed that our server said he had a hard time maneuvering around the crowd. By the time they were delivered to the table, we were ready to pay and leave.

What's different now?

The showbiz shenanigans and the opening chef are gone.

As reported in February, Warren hired Philipe Schroeder to lead the kitchen.

When dining there last week with retired JLB Annabelle Tometich following a book chat about her fabulous, must-read memoir The Mango Tree , she said Schroeder is the go-to kitchen “fixer,” citing a few Lee County restaurants he's turned around in the last six years, including Rosy Tomorrows , Society at Bell Tower, and Sanibel’s The Jac, all now closed.

A luxe spin on comfort food

It's more like what didn't I eat? over repeat visits because of the chef change. The food is still good, plating presentations are innovative and fun.

Damn Good Hospitality is the group behind this restaurant and several menu items refer to the company's name, including the burger and lobster mac and cheese, which made my list of seven favorites for 2023.

Both live up to the damn good moniker.

And after eating 20something burgers for work since January, Warren’s version is currently topping my list of those at fine-dining restaurants.

The chopped lobster pieces are plentiful in the mac and cheese which gets a flourish with the crustacean’s head. While not for the squeamish, a tablemate scooped every bit out of the shell.

The short ribs? Served with bone marrow, a tinier fork was needed to pry every bit out.

But my new favorite dish is beef tips soaked in a sumptuous sauce and served with mashed potatoes and crispy onion strings. While listed under shareables, it makes a terrific entrée for one.

Another signature shareable, Gloria’s KFC, stands for Korean fried chicken. There’s enough heat to make your head sweat in a good way. Pow!

If you’re a Chilean sea bass fan, Warren's version will make you happy but it's not necessarily the star of the show.

What remains the same

Alas, it's the noise level. Friday and Saturday nights can be excruciating for anyone sensitive to volume. Midweek’s decibel level is less so, but even with my love of 90s music across all genres, I strained talking over a Biggie/Tupac soundtrack that randomly switched to country music just before 9 p.m.

Last Saturday night’s option of sitting outside as a walk-in was much quieter, but the patio lacks a view and inside's dynamic energy where every barstool and table was packed with people glammed up for a fun night out.

Prices : Shareable appetizers range from $14 for cauliflower to $28 for those terrific Carrara Wagyu tips. Handhelds from $21 for a veggie burger to a market-priced lobster roll, currently $65. House specialties range from $33 for farro risotto to $135 for an “exclusive to Warren NY Strip Jasper—Phoenix MS 9+" served with creamed spinach and heirloom carrots.

Booze : Arguably the town’s best spirits list, you’ll pay accordingly. Signature cocktails with premium spirits are priced $16 to $35. The pours seemed more substantial last week since my December visit. Wines by the glass from $15 to $31, higher for bubbles. Bottles range from $39 for Moscato to $4400 for Latour, with numerous mid-priced selections available.

Etc : Reservations are a must on weekends unless you like waiting. Valet is optional on summer weeknights because nearby parking is ample. The private party mezzanine for up to 26 is very pretty and overlooks the main restaurant. The gorgeous and cozy whiskey library is members-only but ask (nicely) for a peek.
