According to my profile, my brand‘s story started with my sister’s Sailor Moon VHS tapes. Those tapes eventually led me to create content centered around anime and different “nerdy” entertainment aspects.

Your history and values are integral parts of your brand positioning strategy, and a company profile is where you can mention this information without feeling like you‘re talking someone’s ear off.

For example, luxury fashion house Prada's company profile emphasizes the company uses raw materials that are meticulously sourced and exclusively produced for the fashion house.

This creates a sense that you're paying more for higher-quality items. It also explains why I can never afford them.

My content creator profile emphasizes that I‘ve been an anime fan since childhood and shows how I developed my skills for years as a journalist. My audience knows I’m an experienced creator who also happens to be a total nerd.

My audience trusts I‘ll provide quality content rooted in my passion for the medium. It’s a reputation I hold dearly.

What is a Company Profile?

Simply put,   your  company profile   is a professional introduction and aims to inform people (primarily prospective buyers and stakeholders) about your products, services, and current status. A well-written company profile helps your company position itself relative to the market. 

What makes you different than the other guy?

This is the question on everyone's mind — potential buyer, job applicant, or investor — when they hear about your business for the first time. 

So, what's your answer? What's your elevator pitch of differentiation? 

This is why you have a company profile page on your website. It's your chance to tell your story with a little more depth than you would on your homepage. But this is easier said than done. Do you go bold and risk alienating some visitors — or do you do you play it safe and risk coming off as bland and, even worse, forgettable ?

As marketing coaches and web designers, we've seen a fair number of these projects . Below, we've pulled together some examples to inspire your own company profile page, along with a brief description of what makes us like each one. 

What is a company profile, and how is it different from an 'about us' page?

Your company profile   is a professional introduction and aims to provide people with an overview of your business. It might cover:

  • Your history
  • Your mission or core values
  • The future of your company
  • An overview of products and services.

In general, your company profile tends to be a bit more formal than an "About Us" page.

Your About Us page might contain some of the same information, but it tends to be less reserved. It will often include employee headshots and bios , and maybe some customer testimonials or other details. 

Depending on your needs, you may have one or the other, or you may have both. Or, you may use the terms interchangeably. 

In any case, below are 10 examples to help you create your own. 

1. ClickUp : Shaking things up

ClickUp-values

ClickUp is a project management platform with a simple motto: Save one day of work each week. If teams are stuck using cumbersome tools, they spend less time working. 

This break-free mentality is all over ClickUp's about page, which is splashed in bright colors, with pictures of the people who make the company run, but it's less headshots and more company get-togethers. 

The focus here is on core values that make ClickUp different from everybody else out there. 

2. Brooks Running : Changing the world

Brooks-Running

For those who are serious about it, running isn't an exercise, it's an identity. Brooks Running feels less like a brand and more like an affinity group for those who are in the know. Taglines like "Running is a gift" and "The run is who we are" deeply connect the product to the person and the experience. 

Although Brooks mostly sells sneakers, they also offer a running club that furthers the idea of community. 

3. Neumann Monson Architects : Your trusted partner

NM-architects

Iowa-based architects Neumann Monson know that trust has to be at the core of every business relationship . If you're an organization contracting NMA to take a project from blueprint to building, you need to know you're dealing with a firm that keeps its promises. 

NMA's "Who we are" page includes photos, videos, and well-chosen language to convey to the world the values they hold dear. 

In an unhurried two minutes, this video describes the core values of the firm.

4. Starbucks : Serving up human connection

Starbucks has long positioned itself as the  third place in people's lives — not home, not work, but a third place that offers pieces of each of the other two: connection, creativity, and comfort. 

It's no surprise, then, that its mission plays so prominently on its website, with colorful imagery behind it. You can look elsewhere and find the company's history. Here, the focus is on the visitor who enters a Starbucks and encounters community. 

At least, that's the idea. 

5. Renaissance : Seeing every student

See-every-student

Ed-tech company Renaissance misses a chance to get more milage out of its great tagline: "See Every Student." I would love to see that messaging moved down to the hero section, swapped out with the "global leader" sub head.

Still, there's a lot to like about this mission-driven business that seeks to improve student outcomes by helping teachers. 

Renaissance leans heavily on its history and success to tell a compelling story. "Since 1986..." and "more than 40% of U.S. schools..." remind visitors that this brand is trusted by thousands of districts — a reputation they're built over time.

This makes an interesting contrast to our first example, ClickUp, which lets its young history support its position as a rule-breaker. 

6. goodr Sunglasses : Great vibes, great glasses

What's not to like about a fun-loving company with an admirable mission? Here, sunglass maker goodr gives the story behind its flat-rate $25 sunglasses. We get a clear sense of company culture from the images used, the playful names of different models, and this quick snippet that explains the company's history in just a few sentences:

7. Chewy : Making pet parenting easier

Pet-supply brand Chewy has always been praised for its customer service. In Chewy's mind, pets come first. 

(I remember once getting a big delivery of cat food that was sent to the former owner of our house. I called Chewy's customer service line to find out about returning it. They asked that I donate it to a shelter or give to a friend with a cat.)

Chewy's profile page reminds us, very simply, of the joy that pets bring to our lives. The company's mission is to make pet ownership easier so that we can keep our furry friends healthy and happy. 

8. Align : Helping teams succeed

Align is a team management platform that keeps tasks and priorities on track. In its About Us page, Align makes it clear that the priority is transparency and success. By starting its page with "We believe...", the company puts its principles front and center.

9. Zappos : Growing beyond your roots

If you don't shop there regularly, you might think of Zappos as just an online shoe warehouse. But the company has expanded, explaining that it was never about shoes — it was always about delivering WOW for the customers. 

Today, the company sells clothing and other items, and its About Us page predicts more expansion in the future, as long as that growth aligns with the company's 10 core values.

10. HubSpot : Helping millions grow better

HubSpot

Business software firm HubSpot offers a counterbalance to the traditional business growth strategy. By saying "We believe businesses can grow with a conscience, and succeed with a soul," co-founders Brian and Darmesh set their business apart.

And, considering that HubSpot's software helps thousands of businesses around the world "grow better", this page sends a clear message that growth does not have to be ruthless. 

Tell your story

Your About Us of Company Profile pages aren't going to be the first one your visitors seek out, but they are important differentiators, especially in a crowded marketplace. Many buyers will want to get to know your brand and your people to know who they'll be dealing with. 

Plus,  81% of consumers say they need to trust brands to do what's right, and, as we saw in the examples above, core values figure prominently in many Company Profile pages.

These tend to follow the lede as they’re a nice cool-down; they give the reader a chance to build knowledge on an obscure topic. Whereas for the writer, both the background and biography offer an opportunity to peg in some facts, figures, and breadcrumbs to draw upon later.

The body of a profile essay is tricky. You, first of all, need to engagingly tell your readers the story in it. Remember to build tension and really ‘let go’ when it comes to releasing that tension. Tell it to a friend, read it aloud. Move around the paragraphs. Remember that the profile is following an arc and in your conclusions, hook back in the initial qualities of the opening part. This technique is like cadence in music, and it will please your audience as long as it isn’t too trite.

For interviews, considering you’re likely a lowly reporter on a college paper, getting an interview with a high-flying sportsperson, politician, or musician is unlikely. In any event, the lower-flying specimens of these species could make a good target.

It may also make it easier to stomach the long hours of tedious research that can emerge when trying to prove or disprove an obscurity of some kind. 

If you haven’t decided on the topic, there’s still room for maneuver. You can look at the subject matter and present your perspective on the case; that’s the subjective element of a profile, your view.

This perspective of yours can focus on just one specific aspect of a person or event. The newest 4K movie can be downloaded in a matter of seconds, and phone images can be uploaded to the cloud in minutes, all due to the lightning-fast speeds of fiber internet. Due to this, the AT&T internet package is the one most residents chosen. Generally, the unlimited data plans, internet, and mobility ensure that the Company supplies the best content to its customers in broadband.

The ratio of a company’s net debt to its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) is very important since it measures how well a business can pay off its debt. It is preferable to have a debt-to-EBITDA ratio that is decreasing rather than increasing because this indicates that the Company is either paying down its debt or expanding its earnings (Kliestik et al., 2022). Similarly, if a corporation’s debt-to-EBITDA ratio is growing, it suggests that the Company is accruing more debt than it is earning. Steve Albini Was Proof You Can Change

To a certain kind of listener, it sometimes felt like he was the last honest musician in the industry.

Nearly 20 years ago, my high-school calculus teacher introduced me to a book that would, although I didn’t realize it at the time, permanently reframe the way I thought about music. Written by the journalist Michael Azerrad, Our Band Could Be Your Life was a study of the 1980s independent-music landscape—of bands that had unconsciously responded to the commercialism found on MTV and mainstream rock radio by going underground, and by getting very weird. The book introduced me to groups such as Black Flag, Dinosaur Jr., and the Replacements , the last of which had beer-drunk songwriting and electric punk-rock hooks that soon made it my favorite band. These groups never became traditionally successful, Azzerad explained, but their careers represented a romantic and uncompromising approach to making music, which could too easily become cheapened by external forces.

And, in fact, many of the bands in the book had attempted to move up a level by signing to major labels, only to hit an artificial ceiling once it became clear that they couldn’t look or sound a certain way. But some of them had not even attempted this—they had recognized, as their careers were taking shape, that their personal beliefs were permanently at odds with the idea of participating in a notoriously predatory and corporate music industry. Among them—and the group that left the strongest impression on me—was a band called Big Black. Big Black was, even by the standards of its contemporaries, particularly abrasive; its serrated riffs and pummeling drumbeats sounded like they’d been recorded on the floor of an automobile factory. And the band’s philosophical stances were just as belligerent as its sound: It was led by a guitarist and singer named Steve Albini who seemed to take particular joy in broadcasting how he thought artists should behave, and denigrating everyone who did not live up to his standards. As Azerrad put it, “This was a band with policies .” Proving its ideological commitment, Big Black broke up in 1987 right after its best record came out—partly because one of the members wanted to attend law school, and also because the band was becoming a little too popular, which meant it was attracting the wrong kind of fans.

But Albini, who died yesterday at the age of 61 from a heart attack, did not stop making music. Over the next few decades, he continued to perform in his own bands and struck up a second career as a recording engineer (his preferred term, over producer ), where he worked with hundreds of artists—among them Nirvana, the Pixies, PJ Harvey, Slint, Joanna Newsom, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, the Jesus Lizard, and many, many, many more. It’s no exaggeration to say that Albini changed the trajectory of rock music for the better. He was especially good at capturing an artist as though they were playing right in front of you, a product of chemistry and ability rather than studio-driven artifice, and hiring Albini became a way for bands to signal their interest in being “realer,” both in sound and in attitude. His own outlook was perhaps best crystallized in his 1993 essay for The Baffler , “ The Problem With Music ,” in which he meticulously sketched out all the reasons making music on a major label was a sucker’s game. This idea, and its attendant aesthetic principles, felt just as important as the records themselves; to a certain kind of listener, it sometimes seemed like Albini was the last honest musician in the industry, though he would’ve shaken his head at such mythologizing.

I feel confident saying this because, in the summer of 2022, I had the opportunity to profile Albini for The Guardian , and I interviewed him on multiple occasions in Chicago, where he spent most of his life. I did not approach this task lightly. Foremost was the fact that I had been listening to his music for the past 20 years and didn’t want to seem like some fawning kid. But Albini had also incurred a reputation for being personally combative—which is saying something, given that inveterate punk rockers are not always known for their social graces. Over the years, he’d become infamous for saying a tremendous number of insulting things about other people, including bands he’d worked with. (“Never have I seen four cows more anxious to be led around by their nose rings,” he once wrote about the Pixies.) He seemed terribly smart, and suspicious of any nonsense. This is a bit of a broad statement, but allow me to say it: Anyone who has spent time around people who are really into music has met the type of person who seems totally obstinate, and borderline caustic, about why the bands they like are better than the bands you like. These people can be pretty irritating—I don’t want to be yelled at just because I like some Taylor Swift songs—but they inspire a shard of dread that perhaps their obstinacy is justified , that they have latched onto some way of thinking about art that the rest of us are too dull to perceive.

From afar, Albini seemed like the final boss of this mindset. Yet the Guardian profile had been assigned because Albini, in recent years, had begun to soften some of his adversarial instincts, at least in public. He still got worked up about bands he hated (especially Steely Dan ) and about right-wing politicians—but he had explicitly apologized for the numerous offensive things he’d said throughout his life, which included using racial slurs and denigrating women. “A lot of things I said and did from an ignorant position of comfort and privilege are clearly awful and I regret them,” he wrote in a 2021 Twitter thread that went viral. This felt notable because it’s become popular, in recent years, for people to complain about the rise of cancel culture and the shifting standards for public speech. In the past, Albini had always claimed that his offensiveness was attached to some underlying principle, no matter how arbitrary it seemed to others, but he’d since become suspicious of the people who reveled in offensiveness for its own sake. “When you realize that the dumbest person in the argument is on your side, that means you’re on the wrong side,” he had told me about recalibrating his feelings.

So this was one dimension of the Albini I met: a man who, although still razor-sharp and hilarious, was clear-eyed about why he felt he should shed some of these more reactive traits of his former self. “It’s me owning up to my role in a shift in culture that directly caused harm to people I’m sympathetic with, and people I want to be a comrade to,” he said of why he had decided to be open about his evolved thinking. When I published the story, quite a few readers, and particularly men of his generation, said they were personally inspired by Albini’s perspective and growth—that if someone with his cutting reputation could be this reflective, then perhaps nobody else had an excuse for staying rude.

Just as striking, to me, was the way he talked about his job. Earlier in his career, he had been more insistent about how a record should sound, and had freely offered his opinions in the studio. Over time, he sloughed off this tendency and became more comfortable with recording musicians as they were and as they wanted to be. His rates remained affordable, and he was always personally available to record a band; for a reasonable fee, a local artist could get the guy who’d laid down Kurt Cobain’s guitar on “All Apologies.” He relished working with musicians “beneath the professional level,” as he put it to me—people for whom making music was part of a necessary impulse rather than any means of getting rich or famous. He was decidedly not sentimental about the famous artists he’d worked with (though he got a little giddy when we talked about Iggy Pop and the Stooges, whose reunion record he’d recorded). Instead, it was the everyday work of going to his studio and producing physical evidence of a band’s existence—no matter how big or small—that mattered the most. His greatest contribution to music, Kim Deal of the Pixies told me while I was reporting for the profile, was “every single person who has walked through that door and been treated with respect about their ideas.”

Albini did too much to be neatly summarized in any profile; I didn’t have the space in mine to dive too deeply into his most recent band, Shellac, which in a terrible coincidence is releasing a new record next week. But as I drafted, two things kept coming back to me: The first was that Albini had been unafraid to own up to his past rather than wave it off or double down on his positions. The second was that he talked about music not as some expression of ego but as a creative practice worth maintaining because it enriched your life. To hear this—and in such an unpretentious way—was no small thing. This was not mere plate-spinning from a guy who liked to hear himself talk; these were tightly reasoned, directly stated beliefs that he’d stress-tested in his own life and were reflected in how he carried himself.

Unlike many of its peers, Big Black never really reunited, other than for a single performance at an anniversary show for its former record label. “I’m not a nostalgic person by nature,” Albini had told me. “I don’t think about the past very much.” I believed him, but one of my final questions was how he hoped his work would be regarded, should he have to retire tomorrow. I’ll reproduce his answer in full, because I was struck by it at the moment, and I feel heartened thinking about it now:

“I don’t give a shit. I’m doing it, and that’s what matters to me—the fact that I get to keep doing it, that’s the whole basis of it. I was doing it yesterday, I’m gonna do it tomorrow, and I’m gonna carry on doing it. Other people can figure out if they were happy about that, or not. I don’t care what they say; I’m doing it because I find value in it. I find value in being part of this culture, and preserving my peers’ artistic output. I find value in that, as my role: being the person responsible for making the record that someone will hear in 50 years to find out what some band sounded like. How will people know what our culture was like now , in 50 or 100 years? Well, they can read what survives the great digital void, and they can listen to what music survives. And I just want to make sure that I do a good job on the music that survives, you know?”

An obituary for the latest fad to join the tech graveyard

The Metaverse , the once-buzzy technology that promised to allow users to hang out awkwardly in a disorientating video-game-like world, has died after being abandoned by the business world. It was three years old.

The capital-M Metaverse, a descendant of the 1982 movie "Tron" and the 2003 video game "Second Life," was born in 2021 when Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg changed the name of his trillion-dollar company to Meta. After a much-heralded debut, the Metaverse became the obsession of the tech world and a quick hack to win over Wall Street investors. The hype could not save the Metaverse, however, and a lack of coherent vision for the product ultimately led to its decline. Once the tech industry turned to a new, more promising trend — generative AI — the fate of the Metaverse was sealed.

The Metaverse is now headed to the tech industry's graveyard of failed ideas. But the short life and ignominious death of the Metaverse offers a glaring indictment of the tech industry that birthed it.

Grand promise

From the moment of its delivery, Zuckerberg claimed that the Metaverse would be the future of the internet. The glitzy, spurious promotional video that accompanied Zuckerberg's name-change announcement described a future where we'd be able to interact seamlessly in virtual worlds: Users would "make eye contact" and "feel like you're right in the room together." The Metaverse offered people the chance to engage in an "immersive" experience, he claimed.

These grandiose promises heaped sky-high expectations on the Metaverse. The media swooned over the newborn concept: The Verge published a nearly 5,000-word-long interview with Zuckerberg immediately following the announcement — in which the writer called it "an expansive, immersive vision of the internet." Glowing profiles of the Metaverse seemed to set it on a laudatory path, but the actual technology failed to deliver on this promise throughout its short life. A wonky virtual-reality interview with the CBS host Gayle King , where low-quality cartoon avatars of both King and Zuckerberg awkwardly motioned to each other, was a stark contrast to the futuristic vistas shown in Meta's splashy introductory video .

The Metaverse also suffered from an acute identity crisis. A functional business proposition requires a few things to thrive and grow: a clear use case, a target audience, and the willingness of customers to adopt the product. Zuckerberg waxed poetic about the Metaverse as "a vision that spans many companies'' and "the successor to the mobile internet," but he failed to articulate the basic business problems that the Metaverse would address. The concept of virtual worlds where users interact with each other using digital avatars is an old one, going back as far as the late 1990s with massively multiplayer online role-player games, such as "Meridian 59," "Ultima Online," and "EverQuest." And while the Metaverse supposedly built on these ideas with new technology, Zuckerberg's one actual product — the VR platform Horizon Worlds, which required the use of an incredibly clunky Oculus headset — failed to suggest anything approaching a road map or a genuine vision. In spite of the Metaverse's arrested conceptual development, a pliant press published statements about the future of the technology that were somewhere between unrealistic and outright irresponsible . The CNBC host Jim Cramer nodded approvingly when Zuckerberg claimed that 1 billion people would use the Metaverse and spend hundreds of dollars there, despite the Meta CEO's inability to say what people would receive in exchange for their cash or why anyone would want to strap a clunky headset to their face to attend a low-quality, cartoon concert.

A high-flying life

The inability to define the Metaverse in any meaningful way didn't get in the way of its ascension to the top of the business world. In the months following the Meta announcement, it seemed that every company had a Metaverse product on offer, despite it not being obvious what it was or why they should.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella would say at the company's 2021 Ignite Conference that he couldn't "overstate how much of a breakthrough " the Metaverse was for his company, the industry, and the world. Roblox, an online game platform that has existed since 2004, rode the Metaverse hype wave to an initial public offering and a $41 billion valuation. Of course, the cryptocurrency industry took the ball and ran with it: The people behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT company conned the press into believing that uploading someone's digital monkey pictures into VR would be the key to "master the Metaverse." Other crypto pumpers even successfully convinced people that digital land in the Metaverse would be the next frontier of real-estate investment . Even businesses that seemed to have little to do with tech jumped on board. Walmart joined the Metaverse. Disney joined the Metaverse.

Companies' rush to get into the game led Wall Street investors, consultants, and analysts to try to one up each other's projections for the Metaverse's growth. The consulting firm Gartner claimed that 25% of people would spend at least one hour a day in the Metaverse by 2026. The Wall Street Journal said the Metaverse would change the way we work forever . The global consulting firm McKinsey predicted that the Metaverse could generate up to "$5 trillion in value," adding that around 95% of business leaders expected the Metaverse to "positively impact their industry" within five to 10 years. Not to be outdone, Citi put out a massive report that declared the Metaverse would be a $13 trillion opportunity .

A brutal downfall

In spite of all this hype, the Metaverse did not lead a healthy life. Every single business idea or rosy market projection was built on the vague promises of a single CEO. And when people were actually offered the opportunity to try it out, nobody actually used the Metaverse.

Decentraland, the most well-funded, decentralized, crypto-based Metaverse product (effectively a wonky online world you can "walk" around), only had around 38 daily active users in its "$1.3 billion ecosystem." Decentraland would dispute this number, claiming that it had 8,000 daily active users — but that's still only a fraction of the number of people playing large online games like "Fortnite." Meta's much-heralded efforts similarly struggled: By October 2022, Mashable reported that Horizon Worlds had less than 200,000 monthly active users — dramatically short of the 500,000 target Meta had set for the end of 2022. The Wall Street Journal reported that only about 9% of user-created worlds were visited by more than 50 players , and The Verge said that it was so buggy that even Meta employees eschewed it . Despite the might of a then-trillion-dollar company, Meta could not convince people to use the product it had staked its future on. 

The Metaverse fell seriously ill as the economy slowed and the hype around generative AI grew. Microsoft shuttered its virtual-workspace platform AltSpaceVR in January 2023, laid off the 100 members of its "industrial metaverse team ," and made a series of cuts to its HoloLens team . Disney shuttered its Metaverse division in March, and Walmart followed suit by ending its Roblox-based Metaverse projects. The billions of dollars invested and the breathless hype around a half-baked concept led to thousands — if not tens of thousands — of people losing their jobs .

But the Metaverse was officially pulled off life support when it became clear that Zuckerberg and the company that launched the craze had moved on to greener financial pastures. Zuckerberg declared in a March update that Meta's "single largest investment is advancing AI and building it into every one of our products." Meta's chief technology officer, Andrew Bosworth, told CNBC in April that he, along with Mark Zuckerberg and the company's chief product officer, Chris Cox, were now spending most of their time on AI. The company has even stopped pitching the Metaverse to advertisers , despite spending more than $100 billion in research and development on its mission to be "Metaverse first." While Zuckerberg may suggest that developing games for the Quest headsets is some sort of investment, the writing is on the wall: Meta is done with the Metaverse.

Did anyone learn their lesson?

While the idea of virtual worlds or collective online experiences may live on in some form, the Capital-M Metaverse is dead. It was preceded in death by a long line of tech fads like Web3 and Google Glass. It is survived by newfangled ideas like the aforementioned generative AI and the self-driving car. Despite this long lineage of disappointment, let's be clear: The death of the Metaverse should be remembered as arguably one of the most historic failures in tech history.

I do not believe that Mark Zuckerberg ever had any real interest in "the Metaverse," because he never seemed to define it beyond a slightly tweaked Facebook with avatars and cumbersome hardware. It was the means to an increased share price, rather than any real vision for the future of human interaction. And Zuckerberg used his outsize wealth and power to get the whole of the tech industry and a good portion of the American business world into line behind this half-baked idea. 

The fact that Mark Zuckerberg has clearly stepped away from the Metaverse is a damning indictment of everyone who followed him, and anyone who still considers him a visionary tech leader. It should also be the cause for some serious reflection among the venture-capital community, which recklessly followed Zuckerberg into blowing billions of dollars on a hype cycle founded on the flimsiest possible press-release language. In a just world, Mark Zuckerberg should be fired as CEO of Meta (in the real world, this is actually impossible ). 

Zuckerberg misled everyone, burned tens of billions of dollars, convinced an industry of followers to submit to his quixotic obsession, and then killed it the second that another idea started to interest Wall Street. There is no reason that a man who has overseen the layoffs of tens of thousands of people should run a major company. There is no future for Meta with Mark Zuckerberg at the helm: It will stagnate, and then it will die and follow the Metaverse into the proverbial grave.

Even with the stock market less than 1% away from a record high, top forecasters who have consistently leaned bearish can't shake the idea that a painful decline is imminent. 

Some warn of an imminent recession following a weaker-than-expected April jobs report that coincided with a jump in weekly jobless claims, while others suggest a stock market crash similar to 1929 is about to happen.

While these forecasts have fallen flat on their face so far, they're still worth monitoring as a way for investors to poke potential holes in the consistently bullish narrative that the economy, corporate profits, and stock market are doing just fine.

Here's a roundup of the most recent bearish forecasts coming from Wall Street.

Gary Shilling: Recession by year-end means 30% stock market plunge

Wall Street veteran Gary Shilling told Business Insider this week that he expects a recession to materialize in the US economy by the end of the year as the labor market shows signs of weakening. And a weakening in the labor market will crush investor confidence and send the stock market falling by as much as 30%.

"You look at all the kind of speculation that we've had out there, it's indicative of a lot of overconfidence, and that usually gets corrected and corrected violently," Shilling told BI's Jennifer Sor. "I think that the safe bet is for a recession starting later this year if we're not already in it."

Shilling is known for correctly identifying the US housing bubble in the mid-2000's, though most of his consistently bearish views over the past decade have yet to pan out. 

John Hussman: A 65% stock-market crash wouldn't be surprising

John Hussman, president of the Hussman Investment Trust, issued a bearish warning on stocks this past week, arguing that the S&P 500 is trading at similar extremes seen in the run-up to the 1929 Great Depression as the fear-of-missing-out takes over investors.

"Statistically, the current set of market conditions looks more 'like' a major bull market peak than any other point in the past century, with the possible exception of the 1929 peak," Hussman said, adding that the combination of "extreme valuations, unfavorable market internals, and dozens of other factors" give him comfort in having a bearish outlook on the stock market.

Hussman said he wouldn't be surprised if the S&P 500 crashed 65%, which would erase a decade of stock market gains and put the index at about 1,800, or where it traded at back in February 2014. 

Hussman is famous for successfully warnings about the 2000 dot-com bubble and the 2008 housing market crash, though his consistently bearish predictions since then have yet to fully materialize.

BCA Research: A recession in early 2025 will cause 30% stock market decline

BCA strategist Roukaya Ibrahim warned that a 30% correction in the stock market could be sparked by a recession early next year.

Ibrahim told Bloomberg TV that the combination of elevated stock valuations and decelerating growth would send the S&P 500 back down to 3,600, which is around where the index bottomed in October 2022.

Ibrahim pointed to the April employment report, which saw 175,000 jobs added to the economy, revealed lower job openings, hires, and quit rates, all of which signal a shifting narrative toward economic downside, not upside.

"Eventually, the unemployment rate is going to take higher and that's going to lead to concerns about a recession," Ibrahim said.

David Rosenberg: Signs are growing of a potential hard-landing in the economy

The US might be "sleepwalking" into a recession as the labor market shows signs of weakening, according to top economist David Rosenberg.

"We're constantly asked when we're planning to throw in the towel on our recession call, but perhaps it's time folks started asking when the rest of the street is going to pick their towels back up," Rosenberg said in a note this week. "We've seen a downshift in the data flow that are starting to indicate that the downturn in the economy may not be as far away as many believe."

Rosenberg said the Sahm Rule is on the verge of flashing a recessionary warning after the unemployment rate ticked higher to 3.9% in April, and that manufacturing activity contracted for the 17th month out of the last 18 months.

"Don't get complacent. The labor market is cracking, a slowdown in services activity is dragging on real-time growth, and forward looking financial signals still point to a coming slowdown," Rosenberg said.

Rosenberg famously predicted the 2008 recession, but his consistently bearish economic outlooks since then have largely fallen flat.

The counterpoint: A bullish take to balance out the doomsayers

One investment strategist who has been consistently bullish, and therefore right, over the past few years is market veteran Ed Yardeni. 

Yardeni said in a note on Friday that the economic doomsayers are likely once again too early in their recession predictions following the weaker-than-expected April jobs report and weekly initial jobless claims data.

"The most widely anticipated recession of all times is turning into the longest widely anticipated recession of all times," market veteran Ed Yardeni said. "One day, the diehard hard-landers will be right."

But that day probably won't come anytime soon, according to Yardeni, as corporate profit estimates continue to hit record highs.

"Forward earnings rose to a record high during April, consistent with a solid labor market. So we don't buy the claim that the latest jobless claims is just the beginning of a significant downturn in the labor market and the economy," Yardeni said.
