Living Room Design and Experience Essay

My living room is undoubtedly the favorite room in my house. It is the room where I relax when I am tired. I entertain my friends and any other guests in my living room. My living room is designed in such a way that windows are facing the hills. These hills offer extraordinarily beautiful scenery, and one can just look at them the whole day without noticing how time flies by. At the foot’ of the mountains is incredibly beautiful vegetation comprising mainly of cedar trees and blue lilies. My friends love coming to my home just to have a view of the beautiful snow-capped hills.

I have painted a light green color on the walls of my living room and a cream color on the ceiling. The green tint offers a therapeutic and comfortable feeling since it matches well with the environment around my home. The domain itself is remarkably green and provides a great sense to one’s body and soul. Cool colors are useful when it comes to painting or decorating one’s house. Dull colors create a feeling of discomfort and may even stress the guests. In fact, my home is painted with only cool colors.

Since my living room is not very big, I had to plan wisely before furnishing it. I also wanted it to look warm and to accommodate my guests who visit me once in a while. I tried to arrange it in such a way that it would fit the necessary furniture without looking congested. The cost of furnishing it was another issue that I carefully considered. I wanted to buy things that were fashionable and comfortable yet not very expensive. After careful thought and consideration, I decided to purchase sofas, two chairs, a rug, a table, a bookshelf, 42-inch television, curtains, and a table.

The sofas look comfortable as I decided to buy a set that has enormous cushions. The collection of sofas is cream in color and, it blends very well with my cream flowery curtains. The location can accommodate at least five people at a time. When I am entertaining more than five people in my house, the chairs come in handy.

The shelves in my living room hold a number of books and magazines. The brackets look like a small library and, one can get books on different topics. I also have novels from mainly bestselling authors, which my friends borrow from time to time. They also exchange my stories with theirs. My magazines are mostly lifestyle magazines that have information about different international celebrities. I also make sure to buy a newspaper daily to keep up with current affairs.

My LCD television is silver in color. This is where my friends and I catch up on recent blockbuster movies. We also watch football games, especially from our favorite soccer teams. The stand that holds the television is designed with a mahogany tree and has small shelves where I place my Nintendo Switch console and game cases for it.

I always entertain my guests with some soft cool, music whenever they pay me a visit. My Bluetooth speaker is not that big, but it plays soothing music. This makes my living room to be particularly lively and welcoming. My floor rug, which covers most of the room, ensures that my guests are warm since the bare floors can a bit cold. My table is made from camphor and looks fantastic in the middle of the room.

Not Just Any Living Room

If you walk into my living room, you’ll see nothing out of the ordinary. Just a cozy little room with two sofas that lay against two of the four walls. The third wall has a TV and VCR case with many pictures and certificates put on display. The fourth wall has a computer table with a little desk on the side. In the middle of the room lies an oval rug with swirly patterns and on top of that lies a small coffee table. This room has everything that any other living room would have in it, but for me it has more than just something normal. In this room are many artifacts that carry memories that belong to me.

On the left side of the TV case, on the second shelf towards the bottom stands my 8th grade graduation diploma. Whenever I look at the certificate with the leather bound cover I remember of when I first received it.

“Jasmin Husain,” called Ms. Knight, our school counselor.  It was time for me to go and take my diploma from Ms. Sydnor. I slowly walked around the empty and barren stairs in front of me until the top of the glossy wooden stairs of the stage. I went down the stairs one by one carefully holding on to the cold steel railing in case I trip on my dress because of these ridiculous heels. After I make it down the stairs I walked two feet over to Ms. Sydnor. She shook my sweaty hand saying the words “Congratulations Jasmin, you’ve come a long way and you have a long way to go.” She handed me the navy blue, leather bound diploma. Caring the thick diploma I started to follow my friend out of the Gymnasium door.

This is one of the most important memories in my life. It was a moment in my life where I made a transition from middle school to high school. I felt accomplished, like a just arrived at a goal that I was waiting to reach my entire life. I feel like my diploma represents that goal that I’ve reached. It shows that I am in a way that I was growing up. Not in inches or centimeters but from feeling completed.

As I look back at the TV case more artifacts start to bring back more memories. On the bottom shelf of the TV case lies an old, dusty, black VCR with two buttons missing. I start to remember how many times in my childhood my family had to replace the VCRs because my little sister and me breaking them. As I observe the broken buttons another memory runs across my mind.

This was the fourth time that we were going out to Wal-Mart to buy a TV since we had come to Philadelphia. The first two times it was my fault. The first time I stuck sugar daddy candies into the new cassette holder. The second time I’d spilled Pepsi. At least now I was a big girl, I was seven years old and I knew how the world worked. I’ve matured over the past two years. I know all the specific things that make dad upset. So I have long ago stopped committing those crimes. Tajnia on the other hand still hasn’t learned the lesson.

As a writing exercise, describe your own living room, or the living room of someone you know. For inspiration, I offer the following examples from literature.

EXAMPLE OF A LIVING ROOM DESCRIBED BY DAPHNE DU MAURIER

We were all sitting in the long, low room at Farthings, darker than usual because of the rain . The french windows gave very little light, chopped as they were in small square panes that added to the beauty of the house from without , but inside had all the appearance of prison bars , oddly depressing . The grandfather clock in the corner ticked slowly and unevenly; now and again it gave a little cough , hesitating momentarily, like an old man with asthma , then ploughed on again with quiet insistence. The fire in the basket grate had sunk rather low; the mixture of coke and coal had caked in a solid lump, giving no warmth; and the logs that had been flung carelessly on top earlier in the afternoon smouldered in dull fashion, needing the bellows to coax them into life. The papers were strewn about the floor, and the empty cardboard covers of gramophone records were amongst them, along with a cushion that had fallen from the sofa. These things may have added to Charles’s irritation. He was an orderly man, with a methodical mind . from the opening scene of The Parasites by Daphne du Maurier, 1949.

In the short passage above du Maurier conveys a lot of information.

• The reader learns right away that this house — and the people who live there — are not like the landscape outside. The house looks good from the other side but when you’re in it, not so much. The snail under the leaf setting , symbolised by a single house.
• The house is compared to a prison
• The grandfather clock is personified , which in turn makes the actual people seem part of the room. Since the clock is ‘like an old man with asthma’ we know something is about to end and another thing begin.
• We know the temperature of the room
• We have a sense of the light
• We have enough detail to place this room in its approximate time period — the bellows, the open fire which uses coke and coal for fuel, and the gramophone records all indicate this setting is mid-20th century
• Words such as strewn, flung, empty, smouldered and coax work together to not only describe the room but some of its occupants .
• The room is juxtaposed with the first character introduced — the orderly Charles. This is the story’s initial conflict.

What kinds of chairs are in this living room? Who sits in them, or who used to sit in them?

French artist Monique Valdeneige creates living spaces remarkable for their labyrinthine feel. A single view offers glimpses into various parts of the house, aided by the use of mirrors.

Describe the lighting. Where do shadows fall? What might be shrouded in the dark recesses of this room?

How does the high angle perspective change things for the viewer? How might you induce this view in a reader, using text only?

Are there living creatures in this living room? What about living creatures we don’t necessarily see at first?

How is the character connected to their space? Houses are highly symbolic . For instance, houses made out of glass tend to convey loneliness, suggesting isolated and vulnerable characters.

Alice Munro focuses first on a single aspect of this space — the soft furnishings. Why is the carpet daunting? Perhaps because white carpet shows up stains. But because this is a Munro short story, we know that the ‘stain’ is heavily symbolic, beyond the actual carpet.

Grant caught sight of two layers of front-window curtains, both blue, one sheer and one silky, a matching blue sofa and a daunting pale carpet, various bright mirrors and ornaments. […]

Kitchens are great because everything in them feels symbolic. Knives are especially foreboding, even if they’re not used to murder anyone in the end.

On the kitchen counters there were all sorts of contrivances and appliances—coffeemaker, food processor, knife sharpener , and some things Grant didn’t know the names or uses of. All looked new and expensive, as if they had just been taken out of their wrappings, or were polished daily.

The viewpoint character’s response segues nicely from the thumbnail description, telling us more about him:

He thought it might be a good idea to admire things. He admired the coffeemaker she was using and said that he and Fiona had always meant to get one. This was absolutely untrue—Fiona had been devoted to a European contraption that made only two cups at a time.

We also learn about the woman he has come to visit:

“They gave us that,” she said. “Our son and his wife. They live in Kamloops. B.C. They send us more stuff than we can handle. It wouldn’t hurt if they would spend the money to come and see us instead.” Grant said philosophically, “I suppose they’re busy with their own lives.” “ The Bear Went Over The Mountain ” by Alice Munro

My favourite detail comes further down, when Munro describes an ordinary kitchen object in gruesome terminology:

She poured the coffee into two brown-and-green ceramic mugs that she took from the amputated branches of a ceramic tree trunk that sat on the table.

All it took was that one word — amputated. Grant feels entirely cut off from his wife, who has dementia, and who is also having an affair inside the care facility.

It seemed a place where heroes could fitly feast after victory, where weary harvesters could line up in scores along the table and keep their Harvest Home with mirth and song, or where two or three friends of simple tastes could sit about as they pleased and eat and smoke and talk in comfort and contentment. The ruddy brick floor smiled up at the smoky ceiling; the oaken settles, shiny with long wear, exchanged cheerful glances with each other; plates on the dresser grinned at pots on the shelf, and the merry firelight flickered and played over everything without distinction. Badger’s living area is a sitting-room kitchen combo. As the description wears on, Grahame makes use of personification to bring the crockery to life. Live objects in the home was a popular Edwardian trope in children’s literature. Recently in my room, I was over the repair. The room turned out very beautiful and modern. My style sea room. And I feel it captain of large swimming. The walls in my room are painted in a nice blue color. I also have a 3D drawing on the wall with the sea. The window in my room round shape. With this window, you can imagine that you are in the cabin.

Parents gave me interesting bed linen. It is also the color of the sea.

I really like the color blue. Curtains in my favorite color of the room. On the floor, a carpet of green. It is made in the form of grass, with long soft bristles. In the evenings I like to lie down on the carpet and reading a book. I love my room, so it is very cozy and warm. Here I can be alone with their thoughts or in their spare time to do their favorite things.

My first own room came to me when I went to school. My parents allowed me to choose the design most of my room. I love bright colors, so bright wallpaper in the room, with an unobtrusive design. Tulle and curtains, too, I chose bright colors, with a light yellowish.

I have a lot of clothes: dresses, skirts, suits. I asked my parents to buy me a large closet so I could hang clothes in the closet, and it does not need to be ironed. At the bottom of the cabinet has a shelf for shoes. It is very convenient. I can remove the summer or winter shoes here, if it is not needed.

I am a supporter of order, so the counter top is almost always empty. Is that on the edge may lie a small stack of books and notebook? Tall and narrow bookcase located nearby. Lizzo Shares Cryptic Essay About 'Feelings' Amid 'I Quit' Statement

D ays after her bombshell "I quit" statement, Lizzo , whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson , has shared an essay about "feelings."

The 'Truth Hurts' artist recently made headlines after taking to social media to say she is sick of "being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet," adding, "I Quit."

She later clarified that she meant she was quitting "giving any negative energy attention." Now, she is grabbing fans' attention once again, this time by sharing an essay she wrote about feelings, which is seemingly about herself.

'Melissa Hated Her Feelings'

The essay titled, 'Melissa Hated Her Feelings', begins with:

"She buried them in a chest in the 5th grade (along with her ability to express them). Other peoples' feelings on the other hand [were] her forte. She could process, decipher and regurgitate other people's emotions effortlessly. This gift could’ve taken her through college, all the way to a degree in psychology."

"Distinguished Dr. Jefferson with a PhD and a cozy office and [an] impressive roster of high-profile, wealthy clients was a shiny idea," the essay continued. "Fate would have a different hand for Melissa her talents were exhausted on mediating family fights, friend group drama, and charming her way out of confronting her own feelings.

Now, of course, Lizzo's real name is Melissa, so it seems this essay is about her and her childhood.

Is Lizzo Referencing Her Childhood In Her New Essay?

The essay further explains how Melissa had three rules when her family was in a "living room brawl."

1.) Don’t cry. 2.) Stay neutral; De-escalate 3.) Don’t take anything personal. This isn’t about you

"She broke rule number 1," she wrote. "Her father, Michael was proud and angry, his big belly filled with self-righteousness. She knew he would be unyielding in his resolve and at this point, her only option was to de-escalate."

"Rule number 2’," she continued. "Then her sister the water sign and calamity for the evening sat on the floor nearly fetal, face red and raw with emotion."

According to the essay, Melissa wanted to tell her sister, "It's not your fault. You just didn’t follow the rules… you’re loved," but she couldn’t tell her that because if she did, she’d be breaking rule number 3.

'She Was Strong'

Later in the essay, Lizzo explained how "traumas began to compact on Melissa, as they do."

Adding, "Humans tend to collect traumas like pebbles on a long hike. We toss them into our backpacks and keep moving forward. Some hikers would falter, but Melissa was built for this. She’d carried the stones of her family’s traumas uphill for years. She was strong."

The essay went on to tell more details and stories of Melissa's childhood before concluding with:

"Melissa began to fall for her feelings. Her feelings gave life purpose. They weren’t always logical, as feelings seldom are. They were sloppy and embarrassing and rude and so f---ing uncomfortable. But they were hers. And they were real. And when she sat alone sipping wine, staring at the moon…They were the only ones still by her side. Ready to break the rules for her because they loved her. And she finally loved them back."

Fans Thanks Lizzo For Being Vulnerable

After sharing her essay on her social media page, fans immediately flooded the comments by thanking her for her vulnerability.

"You are brave Mija," one of Lizzo's fans said as another wrote, "We need more essays of pure vulnerability thank you."

A third expressed, "Love you, Lizzo. You always know you're living an authentic life when people (men) get angry. They know who really owns their power, and it ain't them."

"I’m glad that Lizzo is being open about her life experiences with us. Healing truly is a beautiful journey," another one of her followers wrote.

Lizzo Receives Praise For Sharing Her Essay

The comments didn't stop there as other fans shared things such as "Such a healthy way to release my Queen! I love that you are writing. Let me go read," and "Keep going. You are not alone."

Another expressed, "I love that you share your writing. I think it’s good to live life how you want, not how you’re expected to by the invisible rules others put on you."

"It gives [a] healthy coping mechanism, very proud! I hope it inspires someone else to do the same," one of her fans said.

Don’t Overlook the Power of the Civil Cases Against Donald Trump

For months now, the country has been riveted by the four criminal cases against Donald Trump: the New York state case involving hush-money payments to an adult film star, the federal case involving classified documents, the Georgia election-interference case and the federal election-interference case. But some have been postponed or had important deadlines delayed. The only case with a realistic shot of producing a verdict before the election, the New York case, involves relatively minor charges of falsifying business records that are unlikely to result in any significant prison time . None of the other three are likely to be resolved before November.

It’s only the civil courts that have rendered judgments on Mr. Trump. In the first two months of 2024, Mr. Trump was hit with more than half a billion dollars in judgments in civil cases — around $450 million in the civil fraud case brought by the New York attorney general, Letitia James, and $83.3 million in the defamation case brought by the writer E. Jean Carroll.

For Trump opponents who want to see him behind bars, even a half-billion-dollar hit to his wallet might not carry the same satisfaction. But if, as Jonathan Mahler suggested in 2020, “visions of Donald Trump in an orange jumpsuit” turn out to be “more fantasy than reality,” civil justice has already shown itself to be a valuable tool for keeping him in check — and it may ultimately prove more successful in the long run at reining him in.

The legal system is not a monolith but a collection of different, interrelated systems. Although not as heralded as the criminal cases against Mr. Trump, civil suits have proved effective in imposing some measure of accountability on him, in situations where criminal prosecution might be too delayed, divisive or damaging to the law.

To understand why the civil system has been so successful against Mr. Trump, it’s important to understand some differences between civil and criminal justice. Civil actions have a lower standard of proof than criminal ones. In the civil fraud case, Justice Arthur Engoron applied a “ preponderance of the evidence ” standard, which required the attorney general to prove that it was more likely than not that Mr. Trump committed fraud. (Criminal cases require a jury or judge to decide beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant committed a crime, a far higher standard.) As a result, it is much easier for those suing Mr. Trump in civil court to obtain favorable judgments.

These judgments can help — and already are helping — curb Mr. Trump’s behavior. Since Justice Engoron’s judgment in the civil fraud case, the monitor assigned to watch over the Trump Organization, the former federal judge Barbara Jones, has already identified deficiencies in the company’s financial reporting. After the second jury verdict in Ms. Carroll’s favor, Mr. Trump did not immediately return to attacking her, as he did in the past. (He remained relatively silent about her for several weeks before lashing out again in March.)

Returning to the White House will not insulate Mr. Trump from the consequences of civil litigation. As president, he could direct his attorney general to dismiss federal criminal charges against him or even attempt to pardon himself if convicted. He cannot do either with civil cases, which can proceed even against presidents. (In Clinton v. Jones , the Supreme Court held that a sitting president has no immunity from civil litigation for acts done before taking office and unrelated to the office. And as recently as December, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit made clear that even if the challenged acts took place during his presidency, when the president “acts in an unofficial, private capacity, he is subject to civil suits like any private citizen.”)

It may also be difficult for Mr. Trump to avoid the most serious penalties in a civil case. To appeal both recent civil judgments, Mr. Trump must come up with hundreds of millions of dollars in cash or secure a bond from an outside company. Although he managed to post a $91.6 million bond in the Carroll case, he initially encountered what his lawyers described as “ insurmountable difficulties ” in securing the half-billion-dollar bond he was originally ordered to post in the civil fraud case. An appeals court order last week cut that bond to $175 million — but if Mr. Trump cannot post this bond, Ms. James can start enforcing her judgment by seizing his beloved real estate or freezing his bank accounts. And even though it appears that he will be able to post the reduced bond, the damage done to his cash position and liquidity poses a significant threat to and limitation on his business operations.

Furthermore, through civil litigation, we could one day learn more about the inner workings of the Trump empire. Civil cases allow for broader discovery than criminal cases do. Ms. James, for instance, was able to investigate Mr. Trump’s businesses for almost three years before filing suit. And in the Carroll cases, Mr. Trump had to sit for depositions — an experience he seemed not to enjoy, according to Ms. Carroll’s attorney. There is no equivalent pretrial process in the criminal context, where defendants enjoy greater protections — most notably, the Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination.

Finally, civil cases generally have fewer externalities or unintended consequences. There are typically not as many constitutional issues to navigate and less risk of the prosecution appearing political. As a result, civil cases may be less divisive for the nation. Considering the extreme political polarization in the United States right now, which the presidential election will probably only exacerbate, this advantage should not be underestimated.
