ਮੁਸੀਬਤ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ, ਅਸੀਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਨਿਰਭਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਾਂ । ਅਜਿਹੀਆਂ ਸਥਿਤੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ । ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਸਮੱਸਿਆਵਾਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੱਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ । ਮੈਂ ਉਸਦੀ ਸਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦਾ ਉਪਾਅ ਅਪਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ । ਦਰਅਸਲ, ਇਕ ਸੱਚਾ ਦੋਸਤ ਕਈ ਵਾਰ ਕੰਮ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਇਹ ਇਕ ਦੋਸਤ ਦੀ ਪਰਖ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਪਰੀਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਾਪਦੰਡਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ । ਮੇਰੇ ਦੋ ਦੋਸਤ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਬਦਲਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ । ਉਹ ਮੁਸੀਬਤ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਖੜੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ । ਪਰ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਚੰਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਮਾੜੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।

ਕੋਈ ਸਮੁੰਦਰੀ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਜਾਂ ਹਵਾਈ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਤਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈ ਸਕਦਾ । ਉਹ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਥਕਾਵਟ ਸੱਤ ਸਮੁੰਦਰੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ । ਮੈਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਭਾਰਤ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਰਤੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਝਿਆ । ਉਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਅਤੇ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗਿਆਨ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਹੈ । ਮੈਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਅਤੇ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹਾਂ । ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਨੋਰੰਜਨ ਦਾ ਵਧੀਆ ਸਾਧਨ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ । ਜਦੋਂ ਵੀ ਮੈਂ ਚਾਹਾਂ ਇਹ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝਾ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ । ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਖੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ । ਉਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੁਫਤ ਸਮੇਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰਥਕ ਬਣਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ । ਮੈਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਨਿਰਾਸ਼, ਉਦਾਸ ਅਤੇ ਇਕੱਲੇ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ।

ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ, ਮੈਂ ਇਮਤਿਹਾਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੰਗੇ ਅੰਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ । ਉਹ ਮੇਰੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਵਨਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਯੋਗਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ । ਉਹ ਮੇਰੀ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਵਲੀ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਵਧਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ । ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੋਸ਼ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ । ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਸਾਧਨ ਹਨ ।

ਉਹ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਕਰੀਬੀ ਦੋਸਤ ਹੈ । ਸਾਡੀ ਚੰਗੀ ਕੰਪਨੀ ਹੈ । ਇੱਥੇ ਦੋ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਅਤੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਭੀੜ ਹੈ । ਅਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਭੀੜ ਪਸੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।

ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਮਹਾਨ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਹਾਨਤਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ । ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਖੁਸ਼ਕਿਸਮਤ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਦੋਸਤ ਲੱਭਣਾ ।

Friendship increases our happiness and diminishes our misery,’ said the great Roman orator Cicero, “by doubling our joy and dividing our grief.”

When we do well, it is delightful to have friends who are so proud of our success that they receive much pleasure from it as we do ourselves.

For the friendless man, the attainment of power, wealth and honour is of little value. Such possessions contribute to our happiness most by enabling us to do good to others, but it Is to all those whom we are able to benefit or strangers who take far less pleasure in our benefits than if it is exerted on behalf of friends whose happiness is as dear to us as our own.

Further, when we do our duty inspite of temptation, the mental satisfaction obtained from the approval of conscience is heightened by the praise of our friends for their judgment is as useful as a second conscience, encouraging us in good and deterring us from evil.

Our amusements have become worthless and soon pull upon us if we engage in them in solitude or with uncongenial companions for whom we can feel no affection. Thus in every case, our joys are rendered more intense and more permanent by being shared with friends.

It is equally true that as Cicero points out, friendship reduces our misery by enabling us to share the burden of it with others.

When fortune has inflicted a heavy unavoidable pain, upon us our grief is alleviated by friendly condolence and by the thought that as long as our friends are left to us life is still worth living.

But many misfortunes which threaten us are not inevitable and in escaping such misfortunes, the active assistance and advice of our friends may be invaluable.

The friendless man stands alone exposed without protection to his enemies and to the blows of misfortune but whoever has loyal friends is thereby! provided with a strong defence against the worst that fortune can do to him.

It cannot be forgotten that the people who are proud to fall upon their knees to do us honour when success is with, as may be the first to throw stones of malice when failure sheds its cloud upon our heads.

We should select our friends with the greatest care, and, when we have won them and found them worthy, we should take care to retain them, till we are severed from them by death.

“ਇਹ ਬੇਪਰਵਾਹ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ, ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ ਮਖੌਲਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਮਰਨ ਥੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਡਰਦੇ। ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਕਰਨ ਗੁਲਾਮੀ ਪਰ ਟੈਂ ਨਾ ਮੰਨਣ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ।

ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਾਬਦਿਕ ਅਰਥ- ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਾਬਦਿਕ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ “ਪੰਜ ਆਬ’ ਭਾਵ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਪਾਣੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ। ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਸਤਲੁਜ, ਰਾਵੀ, ਬਿਆਸ, ਚਨਾਬ ਤੇ ਜਿਹਲਮ ਪੰਜ ਦਰਿਆ ਵਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ।ਦੇਸ ਦੀ ਵੰਡ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਭਾਗ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ ਪਰ ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ, ਪੰਜਾਬ ਹੀ ਹੈ। ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਬਣਨ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਸਰਹੱਦ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੂਰ-ਦੂਰ ਤੱਕ ਫੈਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ। ਅਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ 13-14 ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਹੀ ਆਏ ਤੇ 18 ਜਾਂ 19 ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ। 1966 ਈ: ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਵੰਡ ਹੋਈ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਫਿਰ ਕੁਝ ਇਲਾਕਾ ਹਿਮਾਚਲ ਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਹਰਿਆਣਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਿਲ ਗਿਆ। ਹੁਣ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਖੇਤਰਫਲ ਲਗਪਗ 5028 ਹੈਕਟੇਅਰ ਹੈ। ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦਾ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਬੜਾ ਗੌਰਵਮਈ ਹੈ। ਇੱਥੇ ਵੇਦ ਰਚੇ ਗਏ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਗੁਰੂਆਂ, ਪੀਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਰਿਸ਼ੀਆਂ-ਮੁਨੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਧਰਤੀ ਹੈ।

Karan Aujla, 27, became the first Punjabi artist to win an award at the Junos as the genre expands its fan base in Canada.

For many watching the Juno Awards on Sunday, the first few lines of Karan Aujla’s upbeat love ballad were probably their first introduction to Punjabi music.

But Mr. Aujla’s energetic performance at the show in Halifax, a marquee event in the Canadian music industry, inspired even the timid sections of the crowd — for whom the sound and lyrics were something entirely new — to boisterous enthusiasm, said Baldeep Randhawa, a talent buyer and promoter at the entertainment company Live Nation.

“He won everybody over by the end,” Mr. Randhawa, who was in the Juno audience, told me. “The cheers after his set were one of the loudest of the night.”

Mr. Aujla, 27, immigrated to Canada 10 years ago to live with his sisters after his parents had died, and he worked odd jobs before committing to a career in music. His music has bubbled to the top of what some industry watchers are calling the “Punjabi wave,” a cohort of artists who are blending South Asian sounds with influences from rap and hip-hop, and collaborating with Western stars to reach new audiences.

On Sunday, he became the first Punjabi artist to win at the Junos, taking home the Fan Choice Award.

The moment is part of a “ripple effect” of South Asian artists who are breaking through in Western markets, said Neesha Hothi, marketing director of the Juno host committee in Vancouver, where the awards show, adjudicated by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, will be held next year. She pointed to two other milestones last year involving Punjabi artists: AP Dhillon became the first to perform at the Junos, and Diljit Dosanjh was the first to take the stage at the Coachella festival.

It mirrors similar trajectories of Latin and K-Pop artists who rose to international stardom and became cross-cultural hits, she told me.

“We are starting to reflect the diversity of our country, and of the various styles of music and arts and culture that everyone appreciates,” Ms. Hothi said.

Mr. Aujla called me from Vancouver on Friday, and we spoke about what the Junos experience meant to him.

Vjosa Isai: Your performance at the Junos might be the first time that some Canadian music fans have ever heard a Punjabi track. How does it feel to think about that?

Karan Aujla: It’s a blessing. Coming from being born in Punjab, and then moving to Canada, and then performing at the Junos, was such a blessing. I still have goose bumps every time I think about it. I’ve probably watched my own performance like 1,000 times.

What was your favorite moment of that performance?

When the song ended and everybody was applauding. I honestly didn’t want it to end. I felt I had one more track to perform.

You had a historic Fan Choice Award win, and it’s an award you share with Canadian artists like Avril Lavigne, Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber. What was it like to receive that endorsement from fans?

That was a big one for me. As soon as I entered the venue, I was more focused on my performance. I didn’t even know if I’d be winning this award. I was going to be happy anyway, but I didn’t have in the back of my head, like, ‘OK, I’m here to win this award.’ But when they announced my name and I got up — that moment, I’ll remember for the rest of my life. It was amazing.

What’s special about this Canadian brand of Punjabi music?

Canada has played a big role in my career. Combining the Canadian and Punjabi sounds together, it creates this different genre that we didn’t know we would end up with. My last album, “Making Memories,” combines American, Canadian and all these other sounds with folk Punjabi music.

You once worked as a longshoreman. How old were you when you did that job?

I was 19. I was still doing music, but writing mostly for other people. I had a couple of tracks out in my own voice. That job was great for my career, and my sisters thought it would be good for me and my future, but they didn’t know what I was doing about music. I went to that job for three months. There were a lot of Punjabis working there, so they started recognizing me slowly, and they knew that I was into music. But my music didn’t grow as much. I had to just focus on one thing.

Music can be a full-time job, after all. Do you feel supported by the Canadian music industry?

Oh yes, 100 percent. Canada gave me lots of support. Maybe in the future I’ll be doing collaborations with some Canadian artists, too.

Some are calling this moment in Punjabi music the “Punjabi wave.” What does that mean to you?

I’m just happy I’m a part of it, and that I’m the one that brought it to this level, and a couple of other Punjabi artists who are working on the same thing. We’re just doing it for the culture, and I feel like it’s all coming together now. It’s great to witness that.

What’s next for you?

You’re just going to have to wait and see what I’ve been working on for the last eight or nine months. And even for the next few months, I’ll be in the studio, locked up and writing tracks. I’m very excited.
