Importance of Teachers in Our Lives

Teachers are those who make children knowledgeable and cultured. A teacher is a beautiful gift given by god because god is a creator of the whole world and a teacher is a creator of a whole nation. A teacher is such an important creature in the life of a student, who through his knowledge, patience and love give a strong shape to a student’s whole life.

A teacher shares academic knowledge, ethical values and assimilates moral values that help us shape our personality as better human beings. They represent an open book and try to share their life experience for a better tomorrow. A teacher has many qualities, they are efficient in their student’s life and success in every aspect. A teacher is very intelligent. They know how the mind of students gets concentrated in studies.

During teaching, a teacher uses creativity so that students can concentrate on their studies. They are a repository of knowledge and have the patience and confidence to take responsibility for the future of the student. They only want to see their students successful and happy. Teachers are very prestigious people in the society, who through their magic of education, take the responsibilities of raising the lifestyle and mind level of the common people.

Parents expect a lot from teachers. Teachers are the second parents who help the students balance their lives and spend the maximum childhood time. Just as our parents influence our childhood years, our teachers help shape us into the people we want to become when we grow up, having a huge impact on our lives. Students have complete faith in their teachers. In younger years, Students used to listen to their teachers more than anyone else as they used to spend more time with them than anyone else.

The role of the teacher varies from class to game. A teacher is an important creature in everyone’s life who appears to do different things in our life. They are the creator of a wonderful future for our nation.

Importance of a Teacher

A teacher has an important place not only in student life but also in every phase of life. They have all qualities which they distribute in their students. They know that not everyone has the same ability to receive, so a teacher observes all the abilities of each of their students and in the same way, they teach children. A teacher is a great listener of knowledge, prosperity, and light, from which we can benefit greatly throughout our life. Every teacher helps their students in choosing their path. Teachers teach their students how to respect elders. They tell their students the difference between respect and insult and many more. A teacher equips his/her student with the knowledge, skills, and positive behavior honored which the student never feels lost. The teacher makes them aware of how to use time and the restriction of time. A good teacher makes a good impression on his students. When any student makes a mistake, the teacher teaches them a lesson and also makes them realize their mistake. They teach us to wear clean clothes, eat healthy food, stay away from the wrong food, take care of parents, treat others well, and help us in understanding the importance of completing work.

A teacher has many qualities which hold a special place in every student’s life. Teachers embrace various roles they are our friends when we get sad, our parents when we are hurt, and always good advisers. Teachers reward their students for their good work while sometimes punishing them for realizing the mistake to understand that this is not right for their lives.

Children’s future and present both are made by the teacher. He also enhances a good society by creating a good student throughout his life. Only a teacher knows what kind of association his student lives in and what kind of association he holds.

Teachers are great role models. The teachers influence students’ decidedness. For example, India’s most respectable President, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, achieved his position as a great aerospace engineer because of his teacher. Mr. Siva Subramania Iyer’s teachings on how birds fly influenced Dr. Kalam’s contribution to society.

Not only in the education field, but there are also numerous examples in sports too, where teachers played a vital role in shaping the career of the athletes. A notable example is batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, who credits his coach and teacher, Mr. Ramakant Achrekar, for success. Like this, there are numerous examples in various fields of dance, music, acting, arts, science where teachers act as a pivotal role in shaping the life of their disciples.

Relation of Student and the Teacher

The relationship between the teacher and the student was very sacred in ancient times as education was so perfect. There are so many stories written in our scriptures that revolve around student and teacher relationships. Out of all those, the supreme sacrifice made by Eklavya is of prime importance and showcases a student’s dedication towards his teacher.

Alas, This relation is lacking in recent times. Nowadays, it is considered a mere profession. It has become a business or source of income compared to earlier days where it was considered a noble profession. We should be conscious enough not to stain this noble profession and should not create an example that lifts people’s trust in teachers.

In India, we gave great importance to the teacher. According to the Indian concept, the teacher is the spiritual and intellectual father of the teacher. No education is possible without the help of the teacher. He is regarded as the “Guru” – a speculator, a companion, and a guide.

In ancient India, the transmission of knowledge was oral, and the teacher was the sole custodian of knowledge. The relationship between the teacher and the students was amiable and deep in ancient times.

Hard Work is the Key to be a Teacher

It takes a lot of hard work to be a good teacher. First of all, always respect the elders and also obey them. Concentration should be increased toward society and education. To be a good teacher, one has a sense of unity in the heart, does not discriminate against anyone, everyone should be seen with a glance. They always encourage students, they never criticize their students. Develops a good interpersonal relationship with a student. One should always tell good things to their younger ones and always treat the classmate well, always take inspiration from the teacher.

The teacher has a huge contribution to our life. No one can developmentally, socially, and intellectually in their life without a teacher. Many teachers slap students, many give punishment but in the end, the teacher is never bad. It only depends on the way they teach, which is different for everyone and this creates a different image in the student’s mind. They do whatever just to make our future bright.

Every year, some teachers get honored. Teachers’ day is celebrated every year on 5 September, in memory of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, India’s second President. India is a home ground of some great teachers like Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Premchand, Swami Vivekanand, who have given some great lessons of life which are still in trend. On this day a special ceremony takes place in the school, in which students participate enthusiastically. A nation always honors all those teachers who help in eradicating ignorance of darkness. A teacher is an ocean of knowledge, we should keep acquiring knowledge on a subject for as long as possible.

The meaning of this phrase is that the teacher has a great importance, like the importance of the messengers whom God sent to teach people good and keep them away from evil.

That is why the saying urges us to respect the teacher, and when we see him coming, we must stand up to honor him.

In the essay on my teachers, young and old should know what is the importance of a teacher in their lives.

They must know what life and societies would be like if the teacher disappeared from them in any of their fields. The teacher is not limited to reading and writing only. But each field must have a teacher who guides you and gives you a summary of his experience.

What is the importance of science?

Science has a great role in human life. Because of science, man was able to develop himself from just a cave dweller wearing a piece of animal skins to someone who was able to discover people and make a variety of clothes.

Man has decided not to live idly by and not move forward and develop himself. He decided to cook his own food and weave his clothes. He decided to learn how to build a house of timber instead of sleeping in the dark and cold caves.

After this stage, science did not stop for the hut stage and cooking food, but man learned how to grow plants and raise wild animals inside his home. He has moved on to a greater stage of making machines that help him in hunting and self-defense. Learning continued in human life until they made cars and modern transportation. To this day, humans have not stopped learning sciences until they reached space.

What is the role of the teacher and his preference over society?

But who taught humans all these skills? Humans on earth began with Adam descending from heaven, and he had learned many things from God. When our master Adam and Lady Eve gave birth to the first two children, they taught them all the knowledge and sciences they knew. Thus, our master Adam was the first teacher on the planet Earth.

Then the children began to go out and learn by observation and experience, and with time they had children and taught them their experiences and summaries of their experiences.

With this beginning, the role of the teacher grew and spread, until every generation knew who would come after it.

But when the number of people increased and the sciences increased, it was necessary to assign a teacher to each field.

The teacher began to appear in a different way and teach those who wish to learn, and his role is not limited to teaching his children only.

A fishing teacher and a swimming teacher have appeared. There is a culinary teacher and a language teacher. Thus, each field has a dedicated teacher

As for the role of the teacher in society, it is a vital and indispensable role. Where the teacher transfers his expertise in a particular field to the students, which develops this field and makes it not exposed to loss. Thus, the teacher transfers his domain to a higher and higher stage.

The student also transports from ignorance and darkness to a new stage of knowledge that enlightens the mind and relaxes the heart. When an individual learns, society moves forward with him.

What would society be like without a teacher?

If we lose the teacher from our society, we will live in ignorance and darkness. Science will become extinct and disappear because it is not passed onto future generations.

If we lose a teacher for a language or a certain scientific subject, we must bring a teacher from another place, so as not to be shocked by the disappearance of this language or this scientific material from our society.

This is what makes us say that the teacher moves society and individuals from darkness to light. Therefore, losing a teacher brings society back to darkness.

What is our duty to the teacher?

The teacher has many duties towards us as individuals and towards governments. The teacher should get the highest grade in the whole country. The teacher is the one who taught the doctors and taught the judges.

The teacher has taught all classes of society. How can everyone be preferred and forget the teacher and his role in their education? If we thought of turning back time and leaving those who find favor in society without an education or a teacher, would they have reached where they are now without a teacher or not?

The answer is that without a teacher, no one has any identity or any status, so the teacher must be placed in a place that suits him. Governments must encourage and reward teachers on an ongoing basis, so that they continue to give.

Remunerative salaries should be allocated to them so that the teacher does not feel unappreciated, especially since there are other groups of society who are given more salaries than the teacher despite the insignificance of their jobs.

Conclusion of essay on my teacher

At the end of Essay on my teachers, we got to know the 500-word essay on the teacher. We made a long essay on Teacher’s Day. And we knew that the teacher has a great social position, and when the students come up with a question entitled Write an article about your teacher, they must mention the importance of the teacher in the lives of his students and in society.

Teachers are the pillars of humanity. They guide us from the darkness of ignorance and lack of knowledge and bring us the light of goodness, care, devotion, and love. A teacher is the best companion who can always show us the right path.

For me, the most outstanding teacher is my parents. They always teach me the right and tell me how wrongdoings can destroy me forever. From my childhood, they have given me happiness and have also taught me that lack of anything should not be criticized. One must try to balance and get the best from the least. They scold me for my own benefit. Their teachings will forever guide me in my future in the best way.

A teacher shows us the right path towards knowledge and pulls us away from the darkness of ignorance and lack of knowledge. As human beings, we always need a teacher to help us mature in our future. Everybody gets a teacher right from their childhood.

Our parents are our greatest teachers. They give us the first knowledge of life. In schools, we receive lots of teachers who teach us academically. They are mostly responsible to give us knowledge about the institutions of the world. I have come across several of them and yet my class teacher is my favourite.

She teaches us Maths, the subject I fear the most. I used to be extremely scared of it because I always failed to solve those tough problems. But my class teacher is so kind to me that she helps me daily to get rid of my fears in Maths. She teaches me the sums in the easiest way and also inspires me to practice more.

She speaks sweetly and is adorable. The best part of my teacher is that she never scolds me when I get a sum incorrect. With lots of patience, she points out the wrong and corrects me. For her, I am confident in solving all the sums in the book. I am grateful to her for the unconditional support she has given me.

From the Vedic ages, the significance of a guru is specified as someone who will guide his disciples towards the light of true knowledge He will teach them both right and wrong and also mentor them to take correct decisions in their lives. A guru is the assimilation of the Trinity, The Brahma, the Vishnu, and the Maheshwar.

He is aware of everything and is capable of leading his disciples from ignorance to complete knowledge of the self and the world. Today the notion of a gurukul has changed and been replaced by well-made classrooms. The teacher today represents the early guru who plays that same task of giving his students the best education and correct knowledge.

For me, being a teacher is one of the greatest blessings on earth. Because God cannot be everywhere, so he has created teachers as their replicas. I myself aspire to be a teacher one day so that I can serve the children with my wisdom and knowledge. Teachers enable their students to rise higher in their lives fearlessly and be confident in their approach. To me, my parents are my greatest teachers. They have given me the best knowledge of my life and have taught me to choose good over bad.

Life is quite vast and my parents help me daily to fight through all odds. They not only just feed me and educate me in a good school, but also teach me the proper manners and behaviour in life. They help me to aspire for a greater and happier life in the future. Several things happen in my life as a young person. I go through several emotions that I cannot myself understand totally.

I easily disclose it to my parents and they show me the way out of the confusion. My parents do not create unnecessary rules over me and stop me from enjoying my life. They always keep faith in me and their teachings make me humble. I can never think of hurting them because that will destroy their goodwill over me. Parents are the first and the foremost teachers in our lives. We learn the earliest knowledge of respect and obedience from them.

In our schools, we come across many subject teachers who give us institutional knowledge. They are important because they give us a picture of the professional world. Yet the first knowledge of the alphabet, and the first speech happens at home. Home is the place from where a good character is born. Hence, for me, my favourite teachers are my parents.

I have written these essays in pretty simple language for a better understanding of all kinds of students. If you still have any confusion regarding the context, let me know through the comment section below. Keep browsing this website for more valuable sessions.

The Reggio Emilia and Montessori Approaches Used in Early Childhood Education in the 20th Century

This essay about the Reggio Emilia and Montessori methods outlines two significant educational philosophies that have shaped early childhood education in the 20th century. It contrasts the Montessori approach, which emphasizes individual learning and development through a carefully prepared environment, with the Reggio Emilia method, which focuses on collaborative, project-based learning and considers the environment as a third teacher. Both approaches share a deep respect for children as competent learners, yet they offer different paths to nurturing young minds—Montessori through independence and structured learning, and Reggio Emilia through community engagement and creative exploration. The essay highlights how each method’s unique philosophy impacts the development of children, illustrating their influence on global educational practices and their enduring legacy in fostering holistic growth in young learners.

How it works

Visiting the worlds of Reggio Emilia and Montessori is about more than just contrasting two approaches to education; it’s about comprehending two fervently held beliefs about the development of young brains. These 20th-century methods have generated many conversations among parents, educators, and teachers on coffee tables, playgrounds, and teacher lounges. Even though their paths diverge in fascinating ways, they share the laudable goal of helping children reach their greatest potential, creating distinct landscapes in the field of early childhood education.

Let’s chat about Montessori first. Picture a classroom where little ones move about with purpose, picking activities that pique their interest from shelves crafted just for them. This is the brainchild of Maria Montessori, an Italian physician who believed kids flourish when they’re given the freedom to explore at their own pace. Montessori classrooms are serene spaces where each material serves a developmental purpose, beckoning children to touch, learn, and grow. The teacher? More a gentle guide than a traditional instructor, quietly observing and stepping in only when necessary to help these young explorers navigate their learning journey.

On the flip side, the Reggio Emilia approach feels like a collaborative art studio where imagination and dialogue take center stage. Born from the ashes of post-war Italy, it reflects a community’s dream of nurturing citizens who think critically, empathize, and innovate. Here, learning is a journey co-constructed by children, educators, and the environment, which is considered a teacher in its own right. Projects bloom from the kids’ curiosities, leading them down rabbit holes of exploration and discovery. The walls of a Reggio Emilia classroom are alive with the stories of its inhabitants, documenting their growth and ideas through photos, artworks, and scribbles.

Where Montessori lays out a world of individual discovery within a prepared environment, Reggio Emilia throws the doors wide open to collective imagination and inquiry. Montessori asks, “What can this child learn independently?” Reggio Emilia counters with, “What can we discover together?” Montessori’s classrooms are characterized by order and tranquility, a testament to the belief in self-discipline and focus. In contrast, Reggio Emilia spaces buzz with the dynamic energy of collaboration, creativity, and conversation.

Yet, at the heart of both lies a profound respect for children as capable, complex beings, not just empty vessels waiting to be filled with knowledge. Whether it’s through solitary exploration of sensorial materials in a Montessori setting or a group project emerging from a lively discussion in a Reggio classroom, both approaches celebrate the idea that children are natural-born learners.

The legacy of these educational philosophies extends far beyond their Italian roots, influencing kindergartens, preschools, and homes across the globe. They remind us that education isn’t merely about reading, writing, and arithmetic; it’s about nurturing curious, compassionate, and resilient individuals ready to take on the world. As we venture further into the 21st century, the principles of Montessori and Reggio Emilia continue to inspire those of us invested in the future of our littlest learners, echoing the belief that in every child lies the potential to change the world.

Read our research on: Gun Policy | International Conflict | Election 2024

Regions & Countries

About 1 in 4 u.s. teachers say their school went into a gun-related lockdown in the last school year.

Twenty-five years after the mass shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado , a majority of public K-12 teachers (59%) say they are at least somewhat worried about the possibility of a shooting ever happening at their school. This includes 18% who say they’re extremely or very worried, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to better understand public K-12 teachers’ views on school shootings, how prepared they feel for a potential active shooter, and how they feel about policies that could help prevent future shootings.

To do this, we surveyed 2,531 U.S. public K-12 teachers from Oct. 17 to Nov. 14, 2023. The teachers are members of RAND’s American Teacher Panel, a nationally representative panel of public school K-12 teachers recruited through MDR Education. Survey data is weighted to state and national teacher characteristics to account for differences in sampling and response to ensure they are representative of the target population.

We also used data from our 2022 survey of U.S. parents. For that project, we surveyed 3,757 U.S. parents with at least one child younger than 18 from Sept. 20 to Oct. 2, 2022. Find more details about the survey of parents here .

Here are the questions used for this analysis , along with responses, and the survey methodology .

Another 31% of teachers say they are not too worried about a shooting occurring at their school. Only 7% of teachers say they are not at all worried.

This survey comes at a time when school shootings are at a record high (82 in 2023) and gun safety continues to be a topic in 2024 election campaigns .

A pie chart showing that a majority of teachers are at least somewhat worried about a shooting occurring at their school.

Teachers’ experiences with lockdowns

A horizontal stacked bar chart showing that about 1 in 4 teachers say their school had a gun-related lockdown last year.

About a quarter of teachers (23%) say they experienced a lockdown in the 2022-23 school year because of a gun or suspicion of a gun at their school. Some 15% say this happened once during the year, and 8% say this happened more than once.

High school teachers are most likely to report experiencing these lockdowns: 34% say their school went on at least one gun-related lockdown in the last school year. This compares with 22% of middle school teachers and 16% of elementary school teachers.

Teachers in urban schools are also more likely to say that their school had a gun-related lockdown. About a third of these teachers (31%) say this, compared with 19% of teachers in suburban schools and 20% in rural schools.

Do teachers feel their school has prepared them for an active shooter?

About four-in-ten teachers (39%) say their school has done a fair or poor job providing them with the training and resources they need to deal with a potential active shooter.

A bar chart showing that 3 in 10 teachers say their school has done an excellent or very good job preparing them for an active shooter.

A smaller share (30%) give their school an excellent or very good rating, and another 30% say their school has done a good job preparing them.

Teachers in urban schools are the least likely to say their school has done an excellent or very good job preparing them for a potential active shooter. About one-in-five (21%) say this, compared with 32% of teachers in suburban schools and 35% in rural schools.

Teachers who have police officers or armed security stationed in their school are more likely than those who don’t to say their school has done an excellent or very good job preparing them for a potential active shooter (36% vs. 22%).

Overall, 56% of teachers say they have police officers or armed security stationed at their school. Majorities in rural schools (64%) and suburban schools (56%) say this, compared with 48% in urban schools.

Only 3% of teachers say teachers and administrators at their school are allowed to carry guns in school. This is slightly more common in school districts where a majority of voters cast ballots for Donald Trump in 2020 than in school districts where a majority of voters cast ballots for Joe Biden (5% vs. 1%).

What strategies do teachers think could help prevent school shootings?

A bar chart showing that 69% of teachers say better mental health treatment would be highly effective in preventing school shootings.

The survey also asked teachers how effective some measures would be at preventing school shootings.

Most teachers (69%) say improving mental health screening and treatment for children and adults would be extremely or very effective.

About half (49%) say having police officers or armed security in schools would be highly effective, while 33% say the same about metal detectors in schools.

Just 13% say allowing teachers and school administrators to carry guns in schools would be extremely or very effective at preventing school shootings. Seven-in-ten teachers say this would be not too or not at all effective.

How teachers’ views differ by party

A dot plot showing that teachers’ views of strategies to prevent school shootings differ by political party.

Republican and Republican-leaning teachers are more likely than Democratic and Democratic-leaning teachers to say each of the following would be highly effective:

  • Having police officers or armed security in schools (69% vs. 37%)
  • Having metal detectors in schools (43% vs. 27%)
  • Allowing teachers and school administrators to carry guns in schools (28% vs. 3%)

And while majorities in both parties say improving mental health screening and treatment would be highly effective at preventing school shootings, Democratic teachers are more likely than Republican teachers to say this (73% vs. 66%).

Parents’ views on school shootings and prevention strategies

In fall 2022, we asked parents a similar set of questions about school shootings.

Roughly a third of parents with K-12 students (32%) said they were extremely or very worried about a shooting ever happening at their child’s school. An additional 37% said they were somewhat worried.

As is the case among teachers, improving mental health screening and treatment was the only strategy most parents (63%) said would be extremely or very effective at preventing school shootings. And allowing teachers and school administrators to carry guns in schools was seen as the least effective – in fact, half of parents said this would be not too or not at all effective. This question was asked of all parents with a child younger than 18, regardless of whether they have a child in K-12 schools.

Like teachers, parents’ views on strategies for preventing school shootings differed by party.

Note: Here are the questions used for this analysis , along with responses, and the survey methodology .

This AI Tool Cut One Teacher’s Grading Time in Half. How It Works

essay on the topic of teacher

  • Share article

It usually takes Aimee Knaus, who has been teaching computer science for more than two decades, upwards of two hours to grade a classful of coding projects.

This school year, she cut that time roughly in half, with the help of an AI teaching assistant developed by Code.org, a nonprofit organization that aims to expand access to computer science courses, and the Piech Lab at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.

Knaus, who teaches middle school in Kimberly, Wis., was one of twenty teachers nationwide who tested the computer science grading tool’s capability on about a dozen coding projects also designed by Code.org, as part of a limited pilot project.

Beginning today, Code.org is inviting an additional 300 teachers to give the tool a try.

In early testing by Knaus and other teachers, the tool’s assessment of student work closely tracked those of experienced computer science teachers, said Karim Meghji, the chief product officer at Code.org. If that trend holds through this larger trial, the nonprofit hopes to make the tool widely available to computer science teachers around the country, he said.

Meghji would ideally like the tool to become widely available by the end of the calendar year, but the timeline will depend on the results of the broader testing.

‘I worry AI couldn’t push my students to the next level’

Many educators see helping teachers tackle time-consuming but relatively rote tasks— like grading —as a huge potential upside of AI. Curriculum company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Writable tool, Essaygrader, Gradescope, and others have already been released . And some teachers have experimented with using ChatGPT, an AI-powered writing and research tool, to grade papers.

But others are wary of outsourcing grading—especially on assignments that call for making subjective decisions about students’ writing or ideas.

“After all these years, I’ve worked to perfect my feedback and my process,” said Carly Ghantous, a humanities instructor at Davidson Academy Online, a private virtual school. “I worry that the AI wouldn’t be able to push my students to the next level of writing” as well as an experienced teacher could.

By contrast, the criteria for grading the coding projects that the computer science tool examined are cut and dry, Meghji explained.

The AI tool must determine whether a student’s coding project contains certain requirements—for instance, whether there are at least two changeable elements. That’s something the technology figures out quickly and accurately.

Megjhi predicts that, down the road, AI tools could frequently be tapped to help grade student work. Given the technical nature of computer science, it makes sense that the subject would be among the first out of the gate, he added.

“I think we have a unique situation with computer science and coding,” he said. “I do think that assessment will become an AI-assisted task for teachers across multiple subjects. I can’t say what that’s gonna look like for English or for social studies or other subjects. But I can tell you that I do think based on what I’ve seen in computer science that there is there’s definitely an opportunity for broader application.”

‘I had the answer key, but I didn’t know what I was doing’

Grading computer science tasks can be particularly tricky —and time consuming, Meghji said, which is why Code.org was interested in exploring possible AI solutions.

Many teachers who lead computer science courses don’t have a degree in the subject—or even much training on how to teach it—and might be the only educator in their school leading a computer science course.

Kevin Barry, a former social studies teacher, was tapped to teach computer science at his southern Maryland high school by a principal who noticed Barry’s facility with technology. Barry, who is one of a hundred educators who gave Code.org information to inform the development of its tool, hasn’t yet tested the product for himself.

Still, he already wishes that something like it had existed when he first stepped into the computer science teaching role nearly ten years ago.

Back then, “it took me even longer to grade because I didn’t know what I was grading,” said Barry, who teaches at La Plata High School. “I was learning it as I was doing it with the students. I had the answer key, but I didn’t know what I was doing.”

These days, the tool could help him challenge his highest flyers—giving Barry extra time to help those who may be struggling.

In his classes, “I’ve had the captain of the robotics team [and a] kid who lives on a farm and barely knows what the power buttons are,” along with 28 other students whose abilities are somewhere in between those extremes, Barry said.

“I have more advanced students that want to go on” to trickier projects, Barry said. If the tool was able to examine their work, “they can be working three assignments down the road.”

‘We should still always be the ones in control’

Knaus agrees that the tool could be a huge time-saver for teachers. She’s interested in seeing it go beyond grading, offering real-time feedback or assistance to students as they work on coding assignments.

Knaus was surprised by how in sync the tool’s assessment of student work seemed to be with her own. But if she disagreed with the tool’s estimation of an assignment, she wouldn’t hesitate to ignore the AI tool’s recommendation.

“I don’t know that it necessarily is going to always be completely accurate,” Knaus said. “When we think about AI, I think it’s really important for humans to understand that we should still always be the ones in control.

“I don’t think we want to get to the point where we trust AI” over our own knowledge, she concluded.

Florida pronoun law violates teacher’s First Amendment rights, judge says

  • Dara Kam News Service of Florida

TALLAHASSEE — A federal judge on Tuesday blocked Florida education officials from enforcing a law requiring a transgender teacher to use pronouns that align with her sex assigned at birth, saying the law violated her First Amendment rights.

The 2023 law restricts educators’ use of personal pronouns and titles in schools. Violations of the law — one of a number of measures backed by the Republican-controlled Legislature and Gov. Ron DeSantis targeting the LGBTQ+ community over the past few years — can result in teachers being stripped of certifications and hefty financial penalties for school districts.

Plaintiffs Katie Wood, a transgender Hillsborough County teacher, and AV Schwandes, a nonbinary teacher fired last year by Florida Virtual School, sought preliminary injunctions as part of a lawsuit challenging the restrictions.

The challenge alleged the law violates the teachers’ First Amendment rights and runs afoul of a federal civil rights law.

Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker issued a preliminary injunction Tuesday that blocked enforcement of the law against Wood, but the injunction does not apply statewide. Walker’s decision also denied a preliminary injunction sought by Schwandes.

“Once again, the state of Florida has a First Amendment problem. Of late, it has happened so frequently, some might say you can set your clock by it,” Walker’s 60-page ruling began. “This time, the state of Florida declares that it has the absolute authority to redefine your identity if you choose to teach in a public school. So, the question before this court is whether the First Amendment permits the state to dictate, without limitation, how public school teachers refer to themselves when communicating to students. The answer is a thunderous ‘no.’”

Attorneys for the Florida Department of Education and other defendants asked Walker to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that the Legislature has discretion to “promote the state’s pedagogical goals and vindicate parental rights.”

But Walker pointed to a 2022 U.S. Supreme Court decision, in a case known as Kennedy v. Bremerton School District, allowing a high school football coach to pray with his team before games.

“Both Coach Kennedy and Ms. Wood are expressing their own personal messages about their own personal identities to their students — identities that exist independent from their roles as coach or teacher,” Walker wrote.

Walker rejected the state’s arguments that the pronoun restriction was a “pedagogical” decision and, as a result, protected from First Amendment scrutiny.

“Given the personal, self-identifying speech at issue in this case, and the broad application of this restriction to every employee or contractor in the public K-12 context regardless of whether they are responsible for teaching students, this court concludes that the restriction itself is not simply a ‘pedagogical’ or ‘curricular’ choice,” the judge’s order said.

Lawyers for education officials also maintained that the pronoun and title restrictions were the “policy” of all public school institutions and were therefore government speech, which can be restricted.

But the judge disagreed, writing that the “official ‘policy’ label does not necessarily transform Ms. Wood’s speech into a government message whenever she introduces herself or provides her pronouns to students.”

Relying in part on court rulings in a challenge to a Florida law aimed at restricting children from attending drag shows, Walker also said the injunction would apply only to Wood — not statewide, as the plaintiffs’ lawyers sought.

U.S. District Judge Gregory Presnell last year blocked the 2023 drag show law statewide, finding it violated First Amendment rights. An appeals court rejected the DeSantis administration’s request to lift Presnell’s preliminary injunction, and the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the injunction to remain in place. The lawsuit was filed by an Orlando restaurant known as Hamburger Mary’s.

Walker’s order Tuesday said that Presnell’s decision found the drag show law was “facially content-based, unconstitutionally vague and overbroad.” But the same conclusions don’t apply to the restrictions imposed on the teacher, according to Walker.

“In Ms. Wood’s case, she has not alleged a First Amendment overbreadth claim in her complaint. Nor has she persuasively explained why she is entitled to a statewide injunction,” Walker wrote, noting that injunctions should be “limited in scope” to the extent necessary.

“Accordingly, based on this record, the scope of the preliminary injunction in this case need extend no further than prohibiting defendants from enforcing the challenged provision against Ms. Wood to protect her interests while this case remains pending,” the judge wrote.

In granting the injunction, Walker said the teacher used her pronouns before the law went into effect and that the “threat of mandatory discipline” prevents her from using them now.

“This is a classic speech injury — Ms. Wood spoke in the past and wants to speak in the future, but she is deterred by a credible threat of discipline. This court concludes that Ms. Wood has submitted sufficient evidence to establish an injury-in-fact,” he wrote.

The judge also decided that neither teacher “has demonstrated a likelihood of success” on allegations that the law violates a federal employment law prohibiting discrimination.

“The record before this court does not indicate that Ms. Wood was transferred, demoted, or passed over for training or promotion. Further, Ms. Wood has not asserted that the prestige or responsibility of her position as an educator has been diminished,” Walker wrote.

Walker’s ruling also found that Schwandes, who uses the pronouns they/them, “has not submitted sufficient evidence to find that their speech is being chilled” by state education officials’ enforcement of the law.

Schwandes “has not identified any speech that they would engage in at a foreseeable time that is barred” under the law, and also has not said they are looking for employment at a school where the law would be enforced, Walker wrote.

“In short, Mx. Schwandes has not come forward with any evidence showing that they intend to engage in speech in the foreseeable future that would violate” the law, he added.
