Sometimes doing a free PhD means going abroad and doing your PhD in another country.

Personally, I travelled to Australia to do my PhD for the adventure and lifestyle. I was able to get a fully funded placement and international student fee waiver for three years to finish my degree.

Here are the top tips I would give you when Choosing a free PhD.

• Apply to STEM programs: Many PhD (and Master’s) programs, especially in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) fields, are fully funded in the US. Most state schools and Ivy League schools have fully funded programs for these fields.
• Prepare for stiff competition: Because these programs are fully funded, the competition is high. It’s not uncommon for hundreds or even thousands of students to apply to these programs each year, with only a small fraction being accepted.
• Consider assistantships: Fully-funded programs usually provide a stipend in the form of Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) or Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) positions. These roles involve either teaching or conducting research under a professor’s supervision.
• Be ready for some costs: Despite tuition being covered, you may still need to cover some school fees, student insurance, and other miscellaneous expenditures.
• Don’t consider unfunded programs: Many graduate programs do not fund students, but experts advise against attending these schools. The availability of funding indicates the health of the department in terms of research money and growth.

This interdisciplinary Ph.D. program at Northwestern University in Illinois combines coursework in humanities, social science and the visual arts. The program's students receive a five-year full-tuition scholarship plus an annual living stipend. Ph.D students enrolling at this program in fall 2022 will receive a living stipend of at least $36,960 during the 2023-2024 school year. Stipend amounts may change from year to year. Doing a postgraduate study is very exciting. It provides a great opportunity to move closer to the level of expertise in one’s area of interest, and it provides a sense of accomplishment and self-worth for many. This feeling of pride is even further heightened if the postgraduate studies is for a PhD.  Expectedly, there is always a great euphoria that accompanies the realization that a research proposal has been accepted by a University and that a PhD journey is about to begin. However, the euphoria can quickly give way to panic when one considers the possible challenge a lack of funding can pose to the pursuit. Most doctoral students either work part time to fund their studies or find a mixture of smaller grants from charities, organizations or industry. This article highlights institutions that offer fully-funded PhD programmes in peace and conflict studies, with the hope that it would encourage students to undertake courses in peace and conflict studies, thereby helping to build a critical mass of peacemakers, peacebuilders and conflict resolution experts.

• Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa

Programme Information:  The Durban University of Technology’s Peacebuilding Programme is arguably the biggest and most exhaustive of its kind on the continent of Africa. With close to 50 doctoral students enrolled in the programme, it is one of the most diverse on the continent, and one of the most hands-on PhD programmes worldwide.  The degrees start with a compulsory on-campus component of one month during which time students attend classes and submit assignments on peace theory, receive training in practical peacebuilding and learn the details of writing a research thesis. Students are encouraged to work on action research topics which directly build peace among individuals and communities.

Programme Requirements:

• A Master’s degree with a research component, normally at an upper class level (70%) or above.

Programme Information:  The University of Notre Dame’s Kroc Institute for International Peace regularly offers PhD scholarships in the field of Peace Studies for students willing to study in the United States. Graduates are fully credentialed in one of the six disciplines as well as in peace studies. They are prepared for positions in research and teaching — in anthropology, history, political science, psychology, sociology, theology, or peace studies — and for contributions to peacebuilding practice.

Each of the six partner departments (anthropology, history, political science, psychology, sociology, and theology) has specific requirements for earning a dual Ph.D., while the requirements in peace studies are similar for all doctoral students. Doctoral students typically:

Programme Information:  The Department of Peace and Conflict Research at the University of Uppsala in Sweden offers a PhD programme that lasts for 4 years, including compulsory course work corresponding to about 1 year of fulltime studies. PhD candidates are often involved in teaching or administration up to 20% of their time, so it may take up to 5 years to complete the PhD programme.

The application should be in English, except for writing samples which could be in either Swedish or English. The documents submitted should consist of the following:

Programme Information:  The aim of the PhD in Peace and Security Studies at the University of Hamburg is to facilitate both academic and practical career-oriented learning through an integration of young scholars into the activities of the centre’s activities. The programme has a comprehensive programme that includes seminars, research workshops and fieldtrips that help students deepen and broaden their knowledge of theories and methodologies, while gaining insights into current problems in peace research. Doctoral students also have opportunities to present their work-progress to a forum of professional experts during the seminars and workshops regularly organised by the department.

Requirements for the programme include:

• An above-average science, social science or humanities degree at master’s level or higher. The IFSH conducts its own selection procedure.
• A good knowledge of the fundamentals of peace research,
• And a dissertation topic in line with the current research program of the IFSH are expected. Doctoral students at the IFSH participate in working groups and research projects and are assigned personal advisors according the topics of their dissertations. A program director is responsible for the overall management of the program.

Funding Information:  The PhD programme is tuition free. The IFSH does not offer funding itself, but suitable candidates are often provided with support in applying for scholarships.

Programme Information:  The University of Otago offers a fully funded PhD programme themed: Trusting the Enemy: Understanding Intergroup Trust in Conflict and Peace Studies through Social Psychological Approaches. The programme is built on the core belief that trust is the glue that holds relationships together. This project focuses on furthering our understanding of the multidimensional nature of trust. It aims for researchers and practitioners alike to better understand how conflict persists through distrust, how peace building can be empowered through trust, and how fragile intergroup relations can be strengthened through systematic trust building. This work intends to build on the Intergroup Trust Model, which hypothesizes that trust between groups is shaped by the five dimensions of competence, integrity, compassion, compatibility, and security.

Acceptance as a candidate for the PhD degree depends upon the University being able to provide adequate expert supervision in the intended area of research.

The University considers the following criteria when making an internal assessment:

• Academic standard: Prospective students must meet the highest academic standards. A first class Honours degree or Master’s degree including a significant research component is required; research publications (peer-reviewed articles in academic journals or book-chapters) are desirable.
• The project proposal must fit well with our research profile and appears manageable and feasible within a three-year time frame and given financial and other constraints.
• The project must be likely to generate high-quality, publishable work in peer-reviewed journals.
• A Master’s degree with a focus on peace and conflict studies is highly desirable.

In order for us to make internal assessment, the University needs four things from the applicant:

• Full academic transcripts highlighting which course is your thesis or dissertation and / or details of research publications.
• Where possible, an electronic copy of the piece of independent research submitted for examination.
• A curriculum vitae which includes publications, at least one reference letter and the contact details of referees (a minimum of two)
• A preliminary research proposal (about 5 pages) which identifies the contribution of the project to the discourse, a description of its theoretical framework, research design, methodology and time plan.

With this information, the University can assess the likelihood of scholarship funding and the ability of the Centre to provide adequate supervision for the project.  The candidate may be invited to a Skype interview as part of the selection process.  If an applicant is successful in this internal screening process, he / she may then proceed with a formal application.

Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is ranked 66th in the most recent QS study of “Best Student Cities.” The midnight sun and the Northern lights (aurora borealis), which fill the sky with a breathtaking vista for anywhere between 10 and 20 nights a year, are only two of the most magnificent natural phenomena that can be seen in Finland’s vast, open areas.

Finland is a very economical alternative for your PhD study abroad because of its generous higher education policy. Any student, regardless of country, is not now required to pay doctoral fees.

In contrast, fees are often charged to non-EU students for Finnish Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.

A master’s degree (or its equivalent) from a recognized institution is necessary for admission to a PhD program in Finland.

Other prerequisites will be determined by the area of study you are applying for and the particular procedures followed by your university. If unsure, consult your department.

Germany is famous for having a top-notch educational system and for being an innovative nation. According to QS, three of its universities are among the top 100. This includes Heidelberg University, which is ranked 65th, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, which is ranked 59th, and the Technical University of Munich , which is ranked 49th. According to the most recent Best Student Cities rankings by QS, two of its cities, Munich and Berlin, are among the top 10.

Germans invented the doctoral degree, which is based on independent study leading to the submission and review of a thesis. Most colleges continue to offer this style, although some others provide more “organized” programs:

The traditional PhD requires you to choose a research project and conduct it on your own under the supervision of a qualified supervisor (Doktorvater/Doktomutter). The candidate selects the setting for their research, whether it be in a university, non-university organization, or German corporation.

Structured doctoral programs are conducted mostly in English and are focused on the global market. Along with writing your thesis, you will complete extra training, which may entail partnerships and job placements with outside research organizations.

Doctoral degrees are typically free in Germany for all students, regardless of nationality, due to the generous governmental investment in education. You might, however, have to pay additional costs while you are a student.

All public institutions in Germany offer free tuition for doctoral-level studies for up to three years (six semesters). For any additional time beyond the term of your PhD, you might have to pay tuition.

Despite not having to pay tuition, you will still need to pay a semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag), which typically ranges from INR 8k to INR 29k. This pays for office expenses, student government, and student services (Studentenwerk).

In general, you must have completed at least eight semesters of college work before enrolling in a PhD program in Germany. Your final certification must be on par with a German master’s degree.

Additionally, the Dean’s Office (Dekanat) or Board of Examiners (Promotionsausschuss) at your university must acknowledge your prior higher education degree(s).

International students with exceptional qualifications may be admitted to a PhD program with a Bachelor’s degree (fast-track program), albeit you will normally need to pass an entrance exam.

France , which has four universities ranked among the top 100 by QS, is another nation that makes it to our list of 5 countries that offer free or very cheap PhD programmes. French institutions demand comparatively little tuition. A typical annual cost at a public university, for instance, is around 380 euros (INR 31k at the time of writing). Three French cities—Lyon, Toulouse, and of course, the nation’s capital Paris, which is placed ninth by QS—are included in the top 100 Best Student Cities list as a result of their high academic standing and affordable tuition.

The bulk of PhDs is completed as part of a program inside doctoral schools, although French universities occasionally do offer specific doctoral research programs.

The current French PhD tuition is the same for all students, regardless of nationality. But costs can differ greatly depending on whether you attend a public or private school (such a Grandes École).

Public institutions charge substantially lower tuition since the State invests an average of INR 11,62,147.82 per student, per year.

The following fees may apply depending on your institution:

• Fees for PhD students at public institutions are €380 annually.
• Private institutions – Tuition at private institutions, particularly business schools, range from INR 2.49 Lakh to INR 8.30 Lakh per year.
• Administrative fees (frais de dossier), which universities may impose, are normally modest—a few tens of euros.

In France, each institution is permitted to establish its own standards and conduct personalized evaluations. However, in order to enroll as a PhD student, you will normally need to hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a suitable field.

If you are pursuing your master’s degree and expect to graduate before the PhD program begins, you may apply.

Additionally, you could be accepted based on your performance on entrance tests and in pre-college courses like the ‘Classe préparatoire aux grandes écoles’ (CPGE), which is a frequent practice among French Grandes Écoles.

Pursuing PhD in Finland is entirely free.

What you’ll learn: In this course you’ll learn basic R syntax and foundational R programming concepts, including data types, vectors arithmetic, and indexing. You’ll also perform operations that include sorting, data wrangling using dplyr, and making plots. 

“It’s the basics of how to wrangle, analyze, and visualize data in R,” says Dustin Tingley, Harvard University’s deputy vice provost for advances in learning and a professor of government in the school’s government department. “That gets you writing a little bit of code, but you’re not doing anything that heavy.”

Prerequisites: HarvardX recommends having an up-to-date browser to enable programming directly in a browser-based interface 

Fundamentals of Qualitative Research Methods  

About: This course will teach you the fundamentals of qualitative research methods. Qualitative research provides deeper insights into real-world problems that might not always be immediately evident. This course is offered through Yale University on YouTube.

Course length: 90 minutes spread out over six modules

What you’ll learn: In this course you’ll learn how qualitative research is a way to systematically collect, organize, and interpret information that is difficult to measure quantitatively. This includes developing qualitative research questions, gathering data through interviews and focus groups, and analyzing this data. 

“Qualitative research is the systematic, rigorous application of narratives and tools to better understand a complex phenomenon,” says Leslie Curry, a professor of public health and management at the Yale School of Public Health and a professor of management at the Yale School of Management. She adds that this approach can help understand flaws in large data sets. “It can be used as an adjunct to a lot of the really important work that’s happening in large data analysis.”

Getting and Cleaning Data  

About: This course covers the basic ways that data can be obtained and how that data can be cleaned to make it “tidy.” It will also teach you the components of a complete data set, such as raw data, codebooks, processing instructions, and processed data. This course is offered by Johns Hopkins University through Coursera, and is part of a 10-course Data Science Specialization series.

Course length: Four weeks, totaling approximately 19 hours

What you’ll learn: Through this course you’ll learn about common data storage systems, how to use R for text and date manipulation, how to use data cleaning basics to make data “tidy,” and how to obtain useable data from the web, application programming interfaces (APIs), and databases. 

“It’s the starting point” when it comes to data analysis, Caffo says. “Without a good data set that is cleaned and appropriate for use, you have nothing. You can talk all you want about doing models or whatnot—underlying that has to be the data to support it.”

Introduction to Data Science with Python  

About: This course teaches you concepts and techniques to give you a foundational understanding of data science and machine learning. Offered by HarvardX through the EdX platform, this course can be taken for free. The paid version offers a credential.

Course length: Eight weeks, 3–4 hours a week

Who this course is for: Intermediate

What you’ll learn: This course will give you hands-on experience using Python to solve real data science challenges. You’ll use Python programming and coding for modeling, statistics, and storytelling. 

“It gets you up and running with the main workhorse tools of data analytics,” says Tingley. “It helps to set people up to take more advanced courses in things like machine learning and artificial intelligence.”

Prerequisites: None, but Tingley says having a basic background in high school-level algebra and basic probability is helpful. Some programming experience—particularly in Python—is recommended 

Introduction to Databases and SQL Querying  

About: In this course you’ll learn how to query a database, create tables and databases, and be proficient in basic SQL querying. This free course is offered through Udemy.

Course length: Two hours and 17 minutes

What you’ll learn: This course will acquaint you with the basic concepts of databases and queries. This course will walk you through setting up your environment, creating your first table, and writing your first query. By the course’s conclusion, you should be able to write simple queries related to dates, string manipulation, and aggregation.

Introduction to Data Analytics  

About: This course offers an introduction to data analysis, the role of a data analyst, and the various tools used for data analytics. This course is offered by IBM through Coursera.

Course length: Five modules totaling roughly 10 hours 

What you’ll learn: This course will teach you about data analytics and the different types of data structures, file formats, and sources of data. You’ll learn about the data analysis process, including collecting, wrangling, mining, and visualizing data. And you’ll learn about the different roles within the field of data analysis.

Learn to Code for Data Analysis  

About: This course will teach you how to write your own computer programs, access open data, clean and analyze data, and produce visualizations. You’ll code in Python, write analyses and do coding exercises using the Jupyter Notebooks platform. This course is offered through the United Kingdom’s Open University on its OpenLearn platform.

Course length: Eight weeks, totaling 24 hours

What you’ll learn: In this course you’ll learn basic programming and data analysis concepts, recognize open data sources, use a programming environment to develop programs, and write simple programs to analyze large datasets and produce results.

Prerequisites: A background in coding—especially Python—is helpful

About: This course will give you an introduction to the main tools and concepts of data science. You will learn the ideas behind turning data into actionable knowledge and get an introduction to tools like version control, markdown, git, GitHub, R, and RStudio. This course is offered by Johns Hopkins University through Coursera, and is part of a 10-course Data Science Specialization series.

Course length: 18 hours

What you’ll learn: This course will teach you how to set up R, RStudio, GitHub, and other tools. You will learn essential study design concepts, as well as how to understand the data, problems, and tools that data analysts use. 

“That course is a very accessible introduction for anyone who wants to get started in this,” Caffo says. “It’s an overview that covers the full pipeline, from things like collecting and arranging data to asking good questions, all the way to creating a data deliverable.”
