You will find all relevant information concerning the application process, e.g. the application deadline and all information on the documents to be submitted. You will have to submit the application online and a selection committee will check your application.

Is it only the OeAD that funds foreign students in Austria? If not, what are some of the other donors?

The OeAD is the most important provider of scholarships, but there are also other institutions offering support. You can find an overview of possible scholarship programmes in our database - www.grants.at . Further, check local institutions in your home country, as some of them also offer scholarships for study and research stays in Austria.

Most OeAD scholarships include a monthly scholarship (depends on the target group). If necessary, accident and health insurance will be taken out on behalf of the grant recipient. The costs for insurance and accommodation have to be paid out of the grant by the recipient of the grant. The OeAD also tries to provide accommodation (student hall of residence or flat) for recipients of grants who wish to have accommodation arranged by the OeAD. Monthly costs: 220 to 550 EUR (depending on how much comfort the recipients of grants want). An administration fee of 18 EUR per month is payable to the OeAD for arranging accommodation.

In other cases, admission is one of the requirements. Please always check the scholarship announcements. You should inform yourself as soon as possible about the different scholarship opportunities in your country to make sure that you will have enough time to complete your application successfully before the deadline.

Student grants.

Support options are available in Austria for students who are at a financial disadvantage; we provide an overview below. First and foremost, financially disadvantaged students have access to government student grants. In addition to these, other support is available – including from the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research ( BMBWF ).

Student grant measures under the Student Support Act

The Student Support Act (in German only) sets out a range of possible funding sources for degree programme students from Austria (and in some circumstances from elsewhere). These are intended to make it easier to finance studying at university.

Overview of funding sources under the Student Support Act

  • All aid under the Student Support Act (with the exception of merit-based awards and stipends) require the student to be worthy of support based on their personal circumstances, and to supply proof that they are successfully continuing to study.
  • The Austrian Student Support Authority website provides information on the precise requirements for individual support measures and all the information needed to apply for these (addresses, deadlines, forms etc. ), which can be done online.
  • The Austrian Student Support Authority has set up Grants Desks (Stipendienstellen) at all major universities and is responsible for allocating such aid (with the exception of merit-based awards and grants/stipends).

Further support for students

The Austrian government helps with student funding through the mechanisms in the Student Support Act, and in other ways. Other public and private institutions also allocate allowances and awards, some to the student themselves and some to their parents.

These include:

  • Family allowance (in German only)
  • Tax measures
  • Family Bonus
  • Reduced rates of health and accident insurance for students (in German only)
  • Housing benefits from the federal states, etc.

In some cases of hardship, the Austrian National Union of Students (ÖH) will provide financial support from the ÖH Social Fund . The Austrian National Union of Students can also provide students with information and support about accommodation and student halls of residence . For a comprehensive overview of grants and possible support for higher education, see this online database www.grants.at/en .

Financing your Studies in Austria

Studying without financial problems

Cost of your studies

Tuition fees.

Austria is an especially attractive country to study in because tuition in Austrian Universities is effectively free for Austrian and EU/EEA students but with some restrictions. Students must complete their studies and graduate in the minimum duration period allowed, plus an allowance of two extra semesters. Students not satisfying this rule or who wish to just take some courses must pay 363 € per semester.

Non-EU/EEA students pay 727 € per semester. Some categories of foreign students may pay only 363 €. Foreign students in exchange programmes and from least developed countries may also be eligible for fee exemptions.

Universities of Applied Sciences have the right to charge fees and currently 17 of the 20 charge the basic fee of 363 € per semester. University Colleges of Teacher Education may also charge similar fees.

Private Universities have their own fee structure. Fees start at 1,000 € per semester but may be substantially higher.

Post-graduate fees are generally the same as undergraduate ones, but some PhD programs in especially desirable areas such as international law may have fees between 1,800 € and 5,575 € per semester.

Cost of living

Accommodation is the major single expense for students everywhere and costs in Austria are quite low. In most University towns dormitory accommodation is available for 200 € a month. This is also the approximate cost for sharing a flat, which will cost around 600 € to rent alone.

Student passes in Austria carry rather more privileges than those in other countries. In Vienna for example, it will buy public transit for an entire semester for just 75 €. A 20 € pass is available to students that gives a 50% reduction on tickets on the national railway system. Entry fees for museums and other events will also be cheaper.

Food costs are comparable to, or cheaper than, other European countries. Cheaper restaurant meals begin at around 9 €. A coffee is less than 3 € and beer in a bar is also around 3 €. Monthly internet costs are around 20 €.

Financing your studies

Public support.

Apart from the free-tuition scheme designed to improve access to University for poorer students, there is a system of grants administered by the Austrian Study Grant Authority.

Support may either be direct, via payments to students, or indirect as non-cash benefits or transfers to their parents.

Direct study grants are available to cover fees, transportation, child support, orphan allowances, insurance and other costs. Students can earn up to 8,000 € while receiving such grants.

The basic grant is 5,700 € per year. Married students, students without parents, those who must live away from home to study, or those who have been independent for four years when beginning their studies receive 8,148 € per year. Students with a child receive 6,500 € or 9,000 € if they must live away from home. Severely disabled students receive an additional grant of between 160 € and 420 € depending on their level of disability.

Tax allowances, child tax credits, health and accident insurance and child allowances are some of the indirect benefits also available. These are normally paid directly to the student’s parents.

Scholarships

There are over 1,600 scholarships for study in Austria available to international and Austrian students. Scholarships may be based on financial circumstances, academic performance, support for women or immigrant students, areas of interest or research and innovation or just unusual.

There is also an extensive system of grants for post-graduate studies available to international students under the International Cooperation and Mobility Program to encourage study in Austria.

Student Loans

Subsidized bank loans may also be available to pay tuition fees for students not eligible for grants.

However these are only available to Austrian residents, so most EU or foreign students would not be eligible unless they have already established residency.

Student jobs

Most students in Austria work part-time during the semester. Popular jobs are in the hospitality industry, retail, telemarketing, cleric work or tutoring.

Because of the long summer break – from July to October – many students take full-time jobs during that period. However for students on scholarships and those requiring a residency permit, there may be restrictions on the total number of hours worked in a year.

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois University Carbondale celebrated Earth Day this week by awarding almost $173,000 in Green Fund grants to 15 diverse project. The projects run the gamut, from establishing a pawpaw research orchard to creating a multipurpose butterfly garden to adding more water bottle refill stations to improving energy efficiency.

The Green Fund Grant Committee, chaired by a student and including three additional students, a staff member and a faculty member, reviewed 18 proposals, said Aimee Lemrise, sustainability director.

“We look forward to this time of year as we elevate our Imagine 2030 strategic plan and its sustainability pillar,” she said. “We are thankful to all who submitted proposals and were excited to see the interest from those taking action toward the opportunities this Green Fund program offers the campus community in reaching its goals to lead and rank in sustainability achievements. We were very impressed with the number of applications submitted this year as well as the proposals themselves.

“There are many with energy efficiency improvements, research toward capturing energy loss through innovative modeling and a wide range of unique projects, with many involving student engagement. We encourage the campus community to already begin thinking ahead about ideas for creative sustainability changes they can propose for campus and plan to apply for green fund grants in the future.”

Grant recipients

The 2024 projects are receiving a total of $172,994, officials announced on Earth Day, April 22. With the addition of the latest round of funding, the university has now awarded nearly $3.64 million to 340 sustainability projects . The funding for the grants comes from a student Green Fee of about $10 per semester, adopted in 2009 as the result of a student-led initiative.

Sustainability projects chosen for Green Fund grants this spring are:

  • Sustainable agriculture collaboration and education initiative, Rachel Miller, Student Sustainable Farm manager/researcher, $39,288. The funding will ensure the farm has year-round management to maintain its educational, functional and collaborative efforts, missions and goals.
  • Oxygen generator and natural gas booster system installation/connection, Jiyong Lee , glass program in the School of Art and Design , $31,000. As part of ongoing efforts to make improvements in the operation of the high-energy-use glass-blowing studio, the funds will be used to install an oxygen generator and natural gas booster in the space in the Pulliam Education Building, allowing the glass studio to eliminate the purchase of oxygen and propane gas and delivery and to reduce energy costs.
  • Development of sustainable laboratory setups for Robotics and Control Laboratory , Arash Komaee , associate professor in the School of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering , $17,400. Komaee will lead a team including three undergraduate students and a doctoral student in designing a collection of laboratory setups with minimal use of non-eco-friendly materials and to manufacture them with biodegradable 3D printing materials for research and instructional purposes.
  • Living wall regeneration, Karen Midden , horticulture professor emerita, and Jennifer Z. Matthews , assistant instructor in interior design , $15,800 to replace the worn living wall system in the Agriculture Building with a new, simpler system. The current wall was created by Midden and installed by students in 2012 as a Green Fund project with guidance from two New York professionals, but the felt-style system needs to be replaced, and the new modular, grid-based tray system will be easier to maintain.
  • SIU Bike Fix It additions and repair, Andrew White, geography and environmental resources major , $10,200. The grant will be used to add two new bike repair stations to campus and make repairs at existing stations.
  • Simulation of in-campus power distribution network at SIU, Bishal Lamichhane, doctoral student in the School of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering , $10,000. Lamichhane will use a hardware in the loop (HIL) simulation of a medium voltage power distribution network for SIU to access the status of protection coordination and power flows for the distribution lines to identify any potential loss-incurring sections.
  • Digital twin model of SIU water distribution system for sustainable water asset management, Sangmin Shin , assistant professor in the School of Civil, Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering , $9,804. The funds will improve the water and energy efficiency at SIU’S Evergreen Terrace water distribution system by mapping and providing a digital twin model to simulate and visualize the system’s performance for water flow, pressure, pipe aging and energy use, thus advancing the information and monitoring capacity of SIU’s Facilities and Energy Management.
  • Native pawpaw orchard with living mulch ground cover, Kaitlyn Lamaster , horticulture instructor in the School of Forestry and Horticulture , $9,273. The pawpaw is the largest native fruit in North America, and this grant will fund groundbreaking research and trial work to gauge the potential for commercial productivity via a pawpaw cultivar trial at the SIU Student Sustainable Farm.
  • Student Center LED spotlight conversion, Jonathan Newlin, Student Center technical director, $8,549. The grant will allow the replacement of old, inefficient, halogen spotlights in the Student Center ballrooms with new, energy-efficient LED lighting.
  • (Sustainable) Saluki Food Pantry , Olivia Stearns, graduate assistant for the food pantry and Master of Public Health student, $7,577. The grant will be used to help the pantry in its goal of addressing food insecurity by creating a more sustainable framework by reducing food waste through increased electronic documentation and promoting the use of reusable bags.
  • At the Student Center , four existing traditional water drinking fountains will be upgraded to feature water bottle refill stations, and two refill stations will be placed in the John Corker Lounge, which services the ballrooms, Kent Epplin, Student Center director, $5,790.
  • New station in the School of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering , Shannon Oxendine, office manager, $2,400.
  • Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center trail graduate assistant, Erik Oberg , program director of logistics, $3,500. The funding will provide for hiring a graduate student to identify, coordinate and implement sustainable trail maintenance and improvement projects and coordinate volunteer opportunities and projects related to TON trails and programs.
  • Sustainable farming and butterfly garden, Students Embracing Nature, Sustainability and the Environment (SENSE) registered student organization , Morgan Schmitt, a senior geography and environmental resources major , and Marsen Fisher, a senior zoology major , $1,575. The Student Sustainable Farm gave SENSE eight raised beds to plant and grow sustainable crops beginning this fall, and the group plans to use the grant to plant a butterfly garden around the beds as well as to increase awareness and education about the ecosystem of sustainable farming.
  • Papermaking with recycled materials, Stephanie Dukat, Craft Shop coordinator, $838. The Student Center Craft Shop will use the grant for a papermaking workshop series using recycled materials and the Craft Shop’s Hollander beater and paper press to allow participants to create handmade paper for personal stationery or art making by upcycling materials such as cotton, denim, scrap paper and cardboard.

Additional awards

The sustainability celebration also included the presentation of awards to recognize SIU’s 2024 Environmental Ambassadors. SIU students earn this award by donating at least 30 hours for community service to environment-related endeavors:

The Sachs Program for Arts Innovation at the University of Pennsylvania has announced that Annenberg School doctoral candidates Azsaneé Truss, Cienna Davis, and Melissa B. Skolnick-Noguera are awardees of its 2024 Student Grants .

The Sachs Program offers grants to support students in their creative pursuits and promote broader access to the arts. These grants are designed to empower students to develop and lead ambitious projects, ranging from performances and exhibitions to collaborative events.

Azsaneé Truss

Azsaneé Truss

Truss’s project, entitled " Conspi(racism) ," is a short film exploring the culturally specific roots and logics of conspiracy theorizing amongst Black Americans via glimpses of an intimate conversation at a listening party and an exploration of the archives of the crack epidemic.

Her film will be grounded by a listening party: a gathering where Black people will listen to music related to the crack conspiracy and have discussions elicited by each song. Using the content from conversations, Truss plans to drive a deep dive into archives related to the crack epidemic and its surrounding conspiracy.

The project will include explorations of community-based sites of preservation throughout Philadelphia, such as The Colored Girls Museum, the KyKy Archives, and the Black Culture Museum.

At Annenberg, Truss's dissertation project studies conspiracy theorizing in Black American art and media. Truss is academically committed to understanding what sorts of knowledge exist outside of the written word, attempting to understand how multimodal forms might have more to offer in the way of liberatory knowledge production processes.

Cienna Davis

Cienna Davis

Davis’s project, " (Digit)al Dread," considers both touch and technology as methods to explore Black hair care practice.

Davis explains: “The project will result in a physical assemblage that uses Black hair care practices (braiding, twisting, locking, etc.) to merge afro-hair with various items and materials associated with electronic technologies and diasporic memories. The assemblage will be interactive, allowing Black femmes to use their own hair to plug into the installation — hearing stories, touching memories, and smelling scents that invoke the kind of sacred, communicative technology of Black hair care practice.”

The project has three phases: a visit to the e-waste village Agbogbloshie in Accura, Ghana where Davis will collect e-waste materials and connect with local laborers and hair braiders; field work in Berlin with fellow artists that will include a focus group on Black hair care in the 21st century; and an installation at the opening of the Transnational Feminist Networks Symposium that Davis is organizing with fellow graduate students at Annenberg.

At Annenberg, Davis utilizes performance ethnography to engage Afro-textured hair as language and communication network. She is interested in digital embodiment and transnational Black feminist modes of techno-vernacular creativity.

Her research examines the role of digital technology and the Internet in transforming processes of racialization and racial identity formation.

Melissa B. Skolnick-Noguera

Melissa Skolnick-Noguera

Skolnick-Noguera's project, " Philadelphia Artists & Culture Keepers: A Digital Media Project,"  will highlight the stories of Latine and Black artists who use their creative work alongside social change in the Philadelphia region.

At Annenberg, she investigates the cultural arts network in Philadelphia, and how praxis and discourse impacts politics and policy. While doing her dissertation research, she saw a need to document the creative projects and visionary solutions BIPOC artists are developing that mainstream media institutions fail to highlight.

As a Latina daughter of an immigrant, she is part of communities that are often at the forefront of arts/culture and social change, yet these narratives are often invisibilized, she says.

Skolnick-Noguera sees this project is an opportunity to make research more accessible outside of academia and as a tool for advocating for more sustainable cultural equity in the Philadelphia region.

"Philadelphia Artists & Culture Keepers"   is part of a wider digital archival project Skolnick-Noguera is working on that will visually show the artists in their element, providing a cinéma vérité look into their environments.
