Every person in the room is likely to have some affiliation with the overarching organization. Before you move into the body of your speech, it’s nice to start with gratitude toward your host. Say 1 to 2 sentences about the event’s sponsor.

“We would not be here without the hard work of the xyz Committee. Thank you to our volunteers for working so hard to make today happen.”
“I’ll start by thanking the xyz Council for bringing us all together today. Thanks to their generosity, this event has been made possible.”

Step 2: Thanking People

1. identify the people you want to thank.

This list usually consists of speakers, guests, participants, organizers, volunteers, and sponsors. Before you deliver your speech, write down the people and groups you’ll mention so you don’t forget anyone. Everyone who helped wants to feel like they played an important part, so make them feel special.

“I’d like to thank the teachers for taking time away from their curriculum to allow students to hear this message. This assembly would be impossible without your support.”
“I’d like to thank Mr. Stephen for speaking at tonight’s event, and I want to thank all of you for your contributions.”
“Thank you to our guest speaker Dr. James for sharing her research on recycling and repurposing used materials. I’d also like to thank our event organizers for planning tonight’s dinner, and our volunteers for setting up and cleaning up after the event. Without them, tonight wouldn’t be possible.”

2. Be sincere and concise

You don’t have to gush to show your appreciation. Ironically, a long speech can turn off your audience—including the people you’re trying to thank. Keep your vote of thanks short and sweet to make a big impact.

Instead of, “Mr. Ajay, I cannot thank you enough for letting us use your room to practice. Your generosity and kindness toward our committee has been overwhelming, and we would be nothing without you,” try: “Mr. Ajay, our committee is so grateful to you for letting us use your classroom to practice when we had nowhere else.

3. Call back to a specific moment from the event and respond to it

Show the guest speaker that you were actively listening by referencing something they said that stuck with you. In a few sentences, mention an idea a participant brought up and point out its relevance to the event’s overall themes. If you can, talk to the speaker ahead of time to find out what points they’re going to make.

“Dr. John tips for befriending bullies really stuck out to me because it reminded me that our club’s goal is to spread kindness.”
“Mr. Devan’s comments about generosity really spoke to me. When we give, we truly create a community.”

4. Share personal anecdotes or anecdotes from the event: Share a personal anecdote or a memorable moment from the event that encapsulates its essence. This can make your speech more relatable and engaging.

Step 3: Concluding Your Vote of Thanks

1. Underscore your organization’s value.

At the end of your speech, talk about what makes your organization special and give your audience something to think about. Emphasize ways your group helps your community, or how your audience can get more involved. End your speech by giving the audience a positive view of your group.

“I would like to thank everyone who helped our committee make this anti-bullying assembly a reality. We are trying to make our halls a safe, friendly space for all students who walk down them, and it’s events like these that help us achieve that.”
“I’d like to extend my genuine thanks to all of you for helping our organization provide food to people in need. Without you, there’d be a lot more hungry bellies in our community.”

2. Conclude with a positive note:

End your speech on an optimistic and uplifting note. You can offer best wishes for the future or express hopes for continued success in similar endeavors.

3. Thank everyone again.

When you’re giving a speech, your conclusion should summarize your main points. In this case, you’re thanking people for helping your event happen. As you wrap up, address the entire audience with a big “thank you” because they all came together to make the day a success.

“Again, I’m grateful for each and every one of you.”
“One last time, I’d like to express my appreciation to everyone who worked on this event.”
“I’d like to end by thanking all of you one last time.”

4. Speak for about 2 to 4 minutes.

Be concise in your vote of thanks, especially at the conclusion. It’s the end of the event and your audience doesn’t want to be keep waiting. Be considerate of their time and limit what you say to what needs to be said.

“Thank you, everyone, for taking the time to be here today and for listening to me speak. I am so grateful for this opportunity. Have a great weekend!”
“Thank you, everyone, for being here tonight.”

When we achieve, we usually do so because others have helped. Your speech of appreciation is the gift or acknowledgment you give in return for what was given you.

When is a thank you speech appropriate?

Any time is good to say thank you! However, a more formal speech of thanks could fit any of these occasions.

Be prepared! Best practice guidelines

Generally the decision to leap to your feet and give a thank you speech is not spontaneous. You will likely have some forewarning and time to consider exactly what you want to say and who you want to mention.

Deciding on the content

Cover these three content areas and you'll be fine.

WHO are you thanking? Note their names in ranking order- the most important first.
WHAT are you thanking them for? Be specific rather than general. Naming what you are grateful for gives your thanks more meaning.
WHAT did their gift of time, expertise, encouragement, money... mean to you? Again, be specific. This is your chance to publicly give credit where it's due, to compliment, to praise. Take it.

Writing your speech

When you've sorted out who you wish to mention and what for, you are ready to begin writing.

Like any other form of speech you need 3 parts:- an opening, the body or middle where you put all your acknowledgments, and a conclusion.

1. Introduction/opening

In your introduction or opening give the reason for the occasion and why it is you're going to thank everyone. What you say, and how you say it, will set the tone for the remainder of the speech.

Depending on the number of people on your 'thank you/appreciation' list and the amount of time you have, consider including a small story about the lead-up making this event possible. A well-chosen personal anecdote will always go down well because it lets those listening share your experience more deeply.

In the body of your speech, start at the top of your list of people to thank and work your way through it. Take care to give the most important people the most time.

For those whom you want to mention but don't have enough time to make individual acknowledgments consider grouping them according to function.

Example: "To Alex, Mary, Judy and Sam, thank you for making me remember to laugh. You helped me keep my sanity and perspective when the going was tough."

3. Conclusion

In the conclusion, summarize your main points and finish.

Sample thank you speech for receiving an award

Here's a short sample thank you speech for you to see how it could be done. There are many ways covering the required content. This is one.

The person giving this speech is thanking an organization for giving him an award.

It is 374 words long. When spoken it will take approximately 2 minutes + to deliver. That's about the right length. It's brief and covers everything needed.

As you read it through imagine hearing it out loud.

Speech text

"Who's considered the incredible power of thank you? Those two words express gratitude, humility, understanding, as well as acknowledgement.

I am here with you: my family, many of my friends and colleagues because I need to say all of that, and then some more.

Thank you for coming to share my being given the Fred Smith Award for Community Service. It's very humbling.

There's a phrase I'm sure you know: it takes a village to raise a child. In this case it's not a child that's been raised but awareness and a long needed community resource - the Parksville Community Literacy Center. The village behind it and me, is you.

In particular thank you to my wife Marlene who has always understood and shared my conviction that communities are healthiest when its resources are equally shared, and that the ability to read underpins long term social and economic well being.

I know the hours I spent after work helping to establish our new Center tested her, especially when I was home late, again.

Remarkably she continues to support, and love me. For that I will always be grateful.

Mary Hill, Catherine Beech and Matthew Fall from the Fred Smith Foundation – thank you for sharing the vision of an integrated community and for being so incredibly supportive. You understood what we were trying to achieve and helped make it possible. Your generous gifts of time, expertise and funds are deeply appreciated.

This award may have my name on it, but in truth it belongs to everybody who has worked to make the center a reality. Have you got a spare day or two? If I called out all those people we'd be here for quite some time! Instead, I'll simply say thank you. You know who you are.

The time and effort you've given ensures that the Parksville people who want it will have access to effective literacy programs and resources. That is a priceless gift. As Nobel Peace Prize winner former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan said “Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.”

Thank you for the award and thank you on behalf of all those who will cross that bridge to a brighter future."

Many people make the assumption that once they've got the words of their speech sorted, they're set to go.

That's not true! Practice completes the process.

Giving yourself several rehearsals, firstly by yourself and then in front of friends or family, will help enormously. Click the link for detailed information about how to rehearse effectively .

For the condensed and shortened version covering good rehearsal practice follow the points below.

1. Content check

Before investing too much time and energy into rehearsing your speech say it through in front of a few trusted friends or colleagues. It is much, much easier to change text prior to practicing it than after you've begun working with it. Ask them to listen:

to make sure you've included everyone you should, in the right order and thanked them for the right things.
for tone. Does the vocabulary fit the occasion? Are the stories right? Is the speech positive? Is it inclusive?

Edit as needed, and then have your test audience listen again.

Getting the timing right is an essential part of making it a success. Go on too long and people stop listening. Be too brief and there's a danger you've missed things out.

The only way to find out how long your speech is, is to time yourself as you say it out loud at a normal speaking rate. If it's too long, look for areas you can cut. Maybe you need to group a few more people together or perhaps you need to shorten some of the specific examples about why it is you're thanking someone. If it's too short, add more detail. Repeat until you get the length right.

3. Use cue cards

If you're at all worried about forgetting things, losing your place or muddling what you want to say, use cue cards. They'll take the anxiety away.

Write the main points of your thank you speech on cue cards. Good notes will keep you on track while ensuring you cover everything you want to like, for instance, the name of every person you want to thank and why.

The moment has arrived when I am standing in front of you all to deliver my speech on my final day at college. Good evening everyone. I, Pragya Kumari, feel very privileged to be able to present here, on this auspicious occasion, and be asked to deliver a vote of thanks on behalf of our School, at today's seminar “Diving into Remote sensing.”

As we all know that saying thank you is a respectful way to show appreciation towards a person, but these words would be less for our today's chief guest and speaker Shrini Sharma, who is a scientist from ISRO, and is especially present here to deliver a talk about remote sensing and its usage. Her talk not only gave us knowledge about remote sensing, but also taught us how to think like a scientist.

A true scientist uses their knowledge in the development of the nation, which we could clearly understand from her lecture. I would also like to thank our second chief guest Sahu Kumar, a specialist in remote sensing and also a lecturer from a renowned college of science. His talk involved how remote sensing in India has developed from time to time, which was clearly understood by everyone. Thank you so much Shrini and Sahu for taking your time and teaching us new things.

Next I would like to thank our Principal because of whom this seminar was possible. He organised this event, and enabled us to learn new things about technology, and also about our country. Our vice principal also played the role of a backbone to us, and helped in the organisation of this talk.

A special thanks goes to our teachers Rahul Jaiswal and Richa Toppo, who took the responsibility of this seminar to be a success. They invited delegate teachers to show their presence, and also motivated us students to be a participant in this seminar.

Today, almost 200 students participated from different schools upon invitation. This made this seminar a grand success as it was able to attract the attention of all the curious, and motivated students who are willing to learn and explore.

Learning is always a good opportunity to feed our mind, as it helps us grow. Through such informative seminars we get a chance to boost our knowledge with an unique opportunity to dive into a field of subject that might be unfamiliar to us. So I would like to take my time in thanking our dear audience, who not only took their time out to be a part of us, but also cheered and motivated us to keep moving.

As we can see that we have a diverse group of students, and this seminar succeeded in providing a holistic and multidisciplinary perspective to Remote sensing, by using real photography, work experience, and selection process for a Remote sensing scientist in ISRO. It definitely was a blessing to have intellectual minds with us, and get to know their thinking process.

How to Deliver A Winning Vote of Thanks Every time!

The vote of thanks…why can’t you just get it right?

Recently I went to a function and I was really impressed by the speeches.

Well…almost.

The introduction was extremely well-delivered and presented the guest speaker as just the right person to deliver this particular speech.

The guest speaker held the audience’s attention like the expert speaker she is. Her ideas were refreshing. She was humorous and the audience could relate to her examples and analogies. It was clear that the organisers knew how to get the best out of a guest speaker.

Then there was the vote of thanks speech.

I know vote of thanks for guest speakers are usually bad. But I was obviously lulled into a state of false expectancy by the speeches that went before this one.

As bad vote of thanks speeches go, it was bang on the money. I mean, it was the worse I had heard for a long time!

It seems that the speaker was sitting in the audience, minding his business, when all of a sudden the organisers stuck a gun in his back and forced him to deliver that speech!

So, I”m asking, “What’s with you and the vote of thanks, guys”?

Why do you make it the worse speech on the program 7 times out of 10?

And why do you so often make it almost as long as the main speech?

Well, I am declaring “ENOUGH!”

I’m pulling out all the stops.

I’m reaching into my background as a trained Public Speaker, an experienced Facilitator and an unwilling listener of bad vote of thanks to help you out.

In this post, I’ll walk you through how to give a super vote of thanks, even a funny vote of thanks, one that will not only delight your audience but will ramp-up your credibility as a speaker.

So let’s dive right in…

What you should know about a vote of thanks

First of all, it is usually a short, formal speech. It is delivered on behalf of an organisation or a business at the end of an event, to thank those who have organized and or participated in that event.

As a result you can find them at the end of events like:

graduations
farewell ceremonies
conferences, seminars and workshops
fairly formal meetings
(and I wish) funerals
You can even give a vote of thanks for a webinar speaker

What this means is, that to avoid bringing down an otherwise great program and to make your guest speaker feel special, you just have to learn how to do them properly, as I mention in point #8 of this post.

But here’s what standing in your way.

You can’t (shouldn’t) write your vote of thanks speech out, three days in advance, practice it and then come to event and deliver it. That work’s for the other type of speeches but for a vote of thanks, it’s the foundation for a crash landing.

On the other hand, if you can come to the event early, listen carefully and keep your wits about you, you can deliver a memorable speech that the organisers will thank you for. You don’t want to miss such an opportunity, do you?

And you dare not forget that the vote of thanks is a speech.

This means, as I tell my participants in my presentation workshops or coaching, like all good speeches it should have have an opening or introduction, a body or discussion part and a conclusion or ending.

I make this point because it seems that people generally believe that unless you’re delivering a big, sexy feature address, you don’t have to pay too much attention to arranging it.

But you’re wrong.

And learning how to speak impromptu and understanding why public speaking is so important to nearly everything you do won’t hurt either.

So…let me break it down for you, may I?

How to begin your vote of thanks

If i tell you that it’s a speech, then it follows that the opening must be hot enough to capture the attention of the audience..

To achieve this, you can use humour, a quotation, refer to the circumstance of the event or any of the myriad of effective ways to begin a speech.

For example:

“According to Saint Ambrose, who lived many years ago: “No duty is more urgent than that of returning thanks” so I’m delighted to have been given the pleasant duty of delivering the vote of thanks this evening…”

“The only people with whom you should try to get even are those who have helped you.” Madam Chair, those words were attributed to John E. Southard and I use them now to “get even” by thanking a number of people who have helped us with this event…”

Now that you know what to do…

Here’s what you should NOT do:

Use an apologetic opening statement
Tell a story or joke that does not relate to the topic
Begin with a long, slow-moving statement
Ask a trite or boring question

Nail the body or middle of your vote of thanks

Just like any other speech, the body of a vote of thanks is the main part of the speech.

It is also the place where you will find the best opportunities to foul up. So let me help you avoid them.

Start by saying on whose behalf you are speaking

You are speaking on behalf of your organisation or business and on your own behalf. If you must leave out any part of this, leave out yourself.

For Example:

Following on from any of the introductions above, you can move smartly into the body of your speech by saying something like:

“On behalf of the Association of Female High-end Car Owners, and on my own behalf, I would like to thank…”

Hit the audience with a three-prong attack

Yeah…Do try to sound spontaneous, enthusiastic and genuine…

To pull off these three things with class, you need to do two things:

First, you need to understand why you and your organisation should be thankful.

A whole lot of people would have worked really hard over a period of time to make the event happen. Everybody, including you, should be feeling a deep sense of gratitude towards them. In reality, you are only the mouthpiece expressing this gratitude. Therefore, we should hear it in your voice and see it in your body language.

Second and more importantly…

Ignore the wonderful advice I gave about how to practice your speech in this post . While I am providing you with a template for a great vote of thanks, most of the details will be filled in by you at the event.

Just imagine this: you write your vote of thanks, you practice it at home, your dog loves it and you bring it to the function…and several things on the programme have changed. But you happily deliver it, just as you practiced at home…

Wuhloss! even thinking about that has me hiding under a table in my mind, holding all your embarrassment in my handbag.

Don’t pretend your vote of thanks is a filibuster

Be brief, your speech should be no longer than 2 – 4 minutes.

Yes, I am serious. Everybody else has already spoken, so it’s too late for a filibuster.

Understand the mindset of your audience at this point in the program.

They recognize that the vote of thanks signals the end of the event. And if the caterers are well-known for mouth-watering food, that’s where their minds will be. Not on another 7 – 10 minute speech.

Be sure to thank the right person(s)

This should be obvious but only recently, a mistake like this took centre-stage at an event I attended.

At the last-minute, the person originally delivering the feature address could not attend. Since no one told the person moving the vote of thanks and since she was working primarily behind the scenes…you can guess what happened.

As you can imagine, nearly everyone (none under the pressure of working hard and then having to deliver a speech!) knew she was an idiot from as far back as high school.

Catch yourself asking “What’s in a name?”

When you get the persons right, then you must get their names right.

Local folklore in my country has it that a popular and conscientious Police Officer once arrested a thief on Synagogue Lane. Being unable to spell or pronounce “Synagogue” he dragged him by the collar on to “Broad Street” and arrested him there!

You do not have that option. You cannot call people a name you can pronounce as you thank them.

So before the event begins, ask the key people if the spelling of their names on the programme is correct and how it is pronounced.

Use the programme as a guide to the “order of thanking”

A good guide as to the order in which you should thank people, is the programme. It also helps to prevent you from leaving out anybody.

If there are just a few items on the programme:

Thank all the speakers/performers individually. A word of caution: this does NOT include the choir.

If there are several items on the programme:

Divide the speakers/performers into groups and thank each group. This includes the choir.

The jury is still out on the supporting acts

Should you thank persons who are not on the program b ut have contributed to the event?

This is often hotly debated and for good reason.

I don’t mean to be unkind, but sometimes, persons really reach too far back to thank such persons, though.

I am in a place in my mind where I will not be surprised if one day, someone thanks the mother of the caterer for giving birth to him or her. The baby sitters of the cleaners for so lovingly helping to mind her children as she worked. Or even the car dealer who leased the clown the car that brought him there.

You should acknowledge them as a group “too numerous to mention” and in this way, you will not offend anybody.

How do you handle the Guest Speaker’s speech?

This is usually easy to do.

Guest speakers are invited to events because it is anticipated that they have something to say that’s at least useful and at best inspiring.

When this is the case, compliment the content and or the quality of speech. Do NOT thank them for the time they took to prepare the speech. (You’ll see why shortly.)

Try to mention one or two points you found particularly interesting, especially if you’re giving a vote of thanks for a guest lecturer…This is also the epitome of proper etiquette since it signals to the speaker you were listening.

For Example:

“I especially would like to thank Ms. Barrow for her entertaining but forthright speech. I especially appreciate that she called us out for not adequately training and coaching our supervisors but at the same time, showed us an easy way to do this.”

What if the Guest Speaker lets you down?

We have all seen it…the guest speaker tanks.

When this happens, what is the poor person delivering the vote of thanks to do?

Just thank the guest speaker for the time they took to prepare and deliver the speech. Lying about how great the speech was, is not one of your options.

That’s why you save the “thank you for the time…” line for feature speeches that are not all that good.

You can get the ending of your vote of thanks wrong

Perhaps you’re now thinking: really Lorna, you mean I can even mess up the ending?!

I’m not answering, you will just have to read on to find out…

Just like how your vote of thanks has a proper opening, you must bring it to a proper close. You may choose any of the many ways you can end any other speech. But just remember these critical points about ending the vote of thanks:

It is NOT the time – to take the speaker to task for something he might have said that you did not agree with. Please!

It is NOT the opportunity – to put forward your own view on the subject that the speaker discussed. This is just plain rude.

It is the time – to bring your speech smartly to a close with a call for a round of applause from the audience for the people whom you have just thanked.

The next time you have to deliver a vote of thanks…

You will nail it like a boss!

Oh…and just remember that VOT on the programmes stands for Vote of Thanks!

The first time I saw it, I did not realise what it stood for, and when I asked…even now as I tell you, I still want to go into a hole in the ground.

Also remember, even though a VOT (oops!) vote of thanks is essentially a short speech, if you can nail it , a winning vote of thanks can establish your speaking credibility!

The chamber was supposed to be in recess next week, but it is coming back to pass this legislation.

As members of Congress streamed out of the Capitol after passing an aid bill to Israel, a crowd of protesters with loudspeakers shouted, "Congress, Congress you can't hide, we charge you with genocide!"

The bill also includes aid to Gaza, but the protesters represent the divisive nature of providing support to Israel amid the humanitarian disaster in Gaza .

"I am now reliving my childhood every time I see anything that's happening in Gaza. And for the last over six months, my husband and I and a few others have been at the White House every single day in the afternoon trying to get our government to stop fighting," she said.

Pro-Palestinian protesters have been resorting to ever-louder tactics – such as shutting down the Golden Gate Bridge during Monday’s morning commute – as they try to shake US support for Israel and draw attention to the crisis in Gaza, where more than 34,000 people have died since the war began, according to the Ministry of Health there.

Lawmakers on both sides applaud Johnson's leadership

A number of lawmakers who backed the aid packages today said their views on House Speaker Mike Johnson as a leader changed after the speaker put bills on the floor despite a threat against his job.

House Foreign Affairs Chairman Michael McCaul, a Texas Republican, said he thinks it was a transformative moment for Johnson as a leader, adding that the speaker's stock in the conference has gone up even as he faces the threat of an ouster from a minority of members.

Meanwhile, Democratic Rep. Mike Quigley of Illinois was blunt when asked whether he had a new respect and view of the speaker than he did two weeks ago.

“I guess I do. The old adage is it’s never too late to do the right thing. We tested that,” Quigley said. “I think we build on this. ... We have a lot of challenges. It’s good news that today at a critical time, we did act cohesively as a legislature.”

GOP Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska said he always thought Johnson would get there but a turning point came when the speaker was briefed that passing Ukraine aid by April was essential.

“He’s always said he was for Ukraine, and I’ve always believed him,” Bacon said. “I think he just came to the conclusion we couldn’t wait any longer. He was briefed that we had to get this done in April or bad things were going to happen to Ukraine."

Speaker Johnson dismisses ouster threats, touts foreign aid bills' passage

Moments after the House passed four foreign aid bills totaling $95 billion, Speaker Mike Johnson said he had not spoken to Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries about potentially saving his job if his hardline colleagues move to oust him .

“I don't walk around this building being worried about a motion to vacate,” Johnson said, referring to a procedural tool to remove the House speaker. “I have to do my job. ... I've done here what I believe to be the right thing to allow the House to work its will. And as I've said, you do the right thing, and you let the chips fall where they may.”

Walking toward his office, Johnson told reporters that he believes he will still be speaker in November and that he hasn’t spoken to any of his detractors Saturday.

Johnson said the “world is destabilized” and “a tinderbox,” stressing the importance of the bills’ passage in a “dangerous time.”

“Three of our primary adversaries, Russia, and Iran, and China, are working together and they're being aggressors around the globe,” Johnson said. “They're a global threat to our prosperity and our security. Their advance threatens the free world, and it demands American leadership. We turn our backs right now, the consequences could be devastating.”

The White House on Saturday clinched urgent foreign aid after a monthslong saga that involved starts and stops in Congress and was momentarily upended by one of the most politically vulnerable issues for President Joe Biden: border security .

The ask for additional aid to Ukraine, among other priorities, dates to October , when the White House put forward its national security supplemental funding request. Over the last several months, Biden has framed the need to provide additional funds to the war-torn country as a national security priority, warning that no ground should be ceded to Russia.

More recently, US officials attributed losses on the battlefield in Ukraine to the lack of additional assistance from the United States. In February, for example, the White House laid the blame for Ukraine’s withdrawal from the key town of Avdiivka squarely at the feet of Republicans in Congress.

Funding for Ukraine was also a recurring topic of discussion between Biden and global leaders as the US sought to reaffirm its leadership on the world stage — a theme echoed in the president’s statement Saturday.

“Today, members of both parties in the House voted to advance our national security interests and send a clear message about the power of American leadership on the world stage. At this critical inflection point, they came together to answer history’s call, passing urgently-needed national security legislation that I have fought for months to secure,” Biden said.

TikTok says it's "unfortunate" that the House used foreign aid package to potentially ban the app

TikTok criticized the House's passage of a bill that could ban the app in the US.

"It is unfortunate that the House of Representatives is using the cover of important foreign and humanitarian assistance to once again jam through a ban bill that would trample the free speech rights of 170 million Americans, devastate 7 million businesses, and shutter a platform that contributes $24 billion to the U.S. economy, annually," a TikTok spokesperson said in a statement Saturday.

Israel thanks US House for passing aid package

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked the US House for passing the Israel aid bill.

“The US Congress just overwhelmingly passed a much appreciated aid bill that demonstrates strong bipartisan support for Israel and defends Western civilization. Thank you friends, thank you America!” Netanyahu said on social media.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz also thanked the House, saying he hopes the measure will pass in the US Senate soon “with strong bipartisan support.”

Posting on X, Katz said, “Thank you @SpeakerJohnson for your leadership which led the efforts to pass the Israel aid package in the House of Representatives today. And thank you Minority Leader @RepJeffries for supporting it. House Speaker Mike Johnson's job is safe, for now, after Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said she won’t move forward with her motion to vacate — a rarely used procedural tool to remove the House speaker — on Saturday. She said she wants her GOP colleagues to “go home and hear from their constituents.”

The House is not expected back until April 29 after a one-week recess.

Schumer hails bipartisanship, thanks Johnson as foreign aid bill heads for passage

The Senate’s Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer , once again spoke from the chamber’s floor after lawmakers voted overwhelmingly to advance the $95b bill authorizing military aid to Ukraine , Israel and Taiwan.

Passing the legislation was a top priority for Joe Biden , his Democratic allies and some Republicans, including the Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell . It faced resistance from others in the GOP, among them the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson . But Johnson relented earlier this month, and allowed it to be voted on in the House, where it passed with more Democrats in favor than Republicans.

In his remarks, Schumer thanked Johnson and McConnell, while saying the bill’s passage was a sign that bipartisanship is alive and well in a Congress better known for intractable partisan stalemate.

“Today’s outcome yet confirms another thing we’ve stressed from the beginning of this Congress. In divided government, the only way to ever get things done is bipartisanship,” Schumer said.

“I thank leader McConnell, as I’ve mentioned before, working hand in hand with us, not letting partisanship get in the way. I thank Speaker Johnson, who rose to the occasion, in his own words, that he had to do the right thing, despite the enormous political pressure on him. And I thank leader Jeffries, who worked so well together in his bipartisan way, with Speaker Johnson.” The last name is Hakeem Jeffries , the Democratic House minority leader.

Trump’s trial on charges of falsifying business records is continuing in New York City, with testimony from former Nation Enquirer publisher David Pecker .

Republican House speaker Mike Johnson took a risk by allowing the chamber to pass the bill funding Ukraine’s defense, but Trump praised him nonetheless.

Chuck Schumer , the Senate’s Democratic leader, thanked Johnson for allowing the House to vote on and pass the foreign aid bill, despite his previous hesitancy towards arming Ukraine.

Back in the Senate, lawmakers continue to debate the foreign aid bill for Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan, which appears headed for passage later today.

The speeches will probably go on for a few hours. Shortly after the chamber overwhelmingly took the key legislative step of invoking cloture on the bill, CNN reports Republican minority leader Mitch McConnell , an ardent supporter of Ukraine, laid into conservative commentator Tucker Carlson for his support of Vladimir Putin , and the damage it has caused:

Carlson traveled to Russia in February for an interview with Putin, which did not appear to go the way the conservative commentator hoped:

Much of what Joe Biden told the crowd in Florida was well-trod territory for the president, who has pledged to protect abortion access ever since the supreme court overturned Roe v Wade in 2022.

But he did try out a new line, one inspired by Donald Trump ’s foray into theology.

“Trump bragged how proud he was to get rid of Roe v Wade … He took credit for it. He said, there has to be punishment for women exercising their reproductive freedom. His words, not mine,” Biden said.

Then he teed up a zinger: “He described the Dobbs decision as a miracle. Maybe it’s coming from that Bible he’s trying to sell. I almost wanted to buy one just to see what the hell’s in it.”

Joe Biden vowed to protect abortion access as president, including vetoing any attempt by Congress to pass a nationwide ban on the procedure.

But much of his speech was dedicated to reminding voters of Donald Trump ’s role in Roe v Wade’s downfall.

“It was Donald Trump who ripped away the right to freedom of women in America. It will be all of us who restore those rights for women in America,” Biden said.

“When you do that, you’ll teach Donald Trump and extreme Maga Republicans an extremely valuable lesson: don’t mess with the women of America.”

In Florida, Biden takes Trump to task for Roe v Wade's downfall

Joe Biden has made it to Tampa, where he’s laying into Donald Trump for his role in the supreme court’s overturning of Roe v Wade, which has allowed states to ban abortion.

Beginning next week, abortion will be banned in Florida beyond six weeks of pregnancy – a point at which many women are not aware they are pregnant. During his presidency, Trump appointed to the supreme court three conservative justices who would go on to vote to overturn Roe.

“For 50 years, the court ruled that there was a fundamental constitutional right to privacy. But two years ago, that was taken away. Let’s be real clear. There was one person responsible for this nightmare, and he’s acknowledged and he brags about it – Donald Trump,” Biden said.

“Trump is worried voters are gonna hold him accountable for the cruelty and chaos he created. Folks, the bad news for Trump is we are going to hold them accountable.”

Independent senator Bernie Sanders expressed disappointment that the chamber declined to consider amendments to the foreign aid bill he planned to offer that would restore funding to UN relief agency Unrwa and remove weapons shipments to Israel.

“I am very disappointed, but not surprised, that my amendment to end offensive military aid to Netanyahu’s war machine – which has killed and wounded over 100,000 Palestinians, two-thirds of whom are women and children – will not be considered,” the Vermont lawmaker said.

“Polls show that a majority of Americans, and a very strong majority of Democrats, want to end US taxpayer support for Netanyahu’s war against the Palestinian people. It is a dark day for democracy when the Senate will not even allow a vote on that issue.”

Foreign aid bill on course for passage after key Senate vote

The Senate invoked cloture on the $95bn bill to provide military assistance to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan, an important procedural step that clears the way for a final vote on its passage later today.

The bill advanced with 80 votes in favor, and 19 opposed.

The measure has already been approved by the House, and will be signed by Joe Biden after it passes the Senate. Lawmakers are now expected to debate the legislation and offer a limited number of amendments.

Back in the Senate, they’re voting on whether to invoke cloture on the foreign aid bill.

That will set the stage for its final consideration, after a period of debate.

A previous motion by Republican senator Mike Lee that would have blocked the bill’s progress was voted down with 50 senators opposed and 48 in favor.

Biden to assail Trump's record on abortion in Florida address

When he speaks in Tampa at 3pm, Joe Biden will press his message that Donald Trump is responsible for the spread of abortion bans across the country, his re-election campaign announced.

The president will arrive in Florida one week before a law banning abortions after six weeks – a point at which many women are not yet aware they are pregnant – goes into effect. In a memo, Biden’s campaign manager, Julie Ch ávez Rodriguez , said such laws were out of step with the American public.

“Trump is hoping that Americans will somehow forget that he’s responsible for the horror women are facing in this country every single day because of him. It’s a bad bet,” Chávez Rodriguez wrote.

When President Biden speaks out against attacks on reproductive freedom across the country and yet another extreme Trump abortion ban taking effect in Florida, it will resonate with voters across every battleground state. Women and their families do not want Trump and MAGA Republicans continuing to dismantle their fundamental freedoms. An overwhelming majority of voters have rejected Trump’s abortion bans every time they’ve been on the ballot, and this November, they’ll reject Trump too.

Joe Biden will shortly arrive in Tampa, where he is scheduled to give an address this afternoon on abortion rights, including attacking Florida’s six-week ban that is set to take effect on 1 May.

Senate procedural vote delayed as Republicans complain they can't offer amendments

The Senate’s procedural vote on the foreign aid bill is being delayed by Republicans complaining they can’t offer amendments to it.

Eric Schmitt , of Missouri, and Utah’s Mike Lee are accusing the Democratic majority leader, Chuck Schumer , of effectively railroading through his version of the bill “with minimal debate and perhaps no amendments”, Lee said.

He insists, as extremist House Republicans who opposed the bill last week did, that money for Ukraine is unpopular.

Bernie Sanders , independent senator for Vermont, says he agrees with Lee.

He says he wants to offer two amendments, one to ensure there’s no money for Israel’s “war machine”. The second is removing a block on aid money for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (Unrwa), which Israel says has been infiltrated by “Hamas terrorists” stealing funds.

“Members can agree with me or disagree with me on the issues, but they should be voted upon,” Sanders said.

Senators are voting now whether to adopt a motion by Lee to table (kill) Schumer’s motion to move forward with the foreign aid bill.

The US secretary of state, Antony Blinken , will visit Saudi Arabia this weekend in pursuit of the Biden administration’s ambitious goal of helping to restore that nation’s relations with Israel, Axios reports .

He’ll be attending the special meeting of the World Economic Forum in Riyadh on Sunday, and meeting the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman , and other regional leaders, the outlet said.

Axios, citing US officials, adds that Blinken “is considering” visiting Israel and its prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu , as part of his trip, but has not yet finalized an itinerary.

Senators are inching towards a procedural vote on the $95.3bn foreign aid package, expected close to the top of the hour.

Arizona Democrat Mark Kelly has just been on the chamber floor, lamenting that it took so long for Congress to pass a bill he said 71% of members ultimately voted for.

“Because of delays, Ukraine’s fighters are desperately low [on weapons and ammunition],” he said.

“That’s tying the hands of their commanders at the same time Russia is revitalizing its war effort.”

But, he says, “Ukraine can win this war. Passing this bill will allow the transfer to them more of what Ukraine needs to turn the tide.”

Republican Maine senator Susan Collins concurs. “[This is] a volatile and dangerous time in world history,” she says:

If [Russia’s president Vladimir] Putin is allowed to succeed in Ukraine, he will continue to pursue his goal of recreating the Soviet Union. He’s made no bones about that.

She fears Moldova, Georgia, the Baltic nations and Poland are in Putin’s sights.

“Then our troops would be involved in a much larger war,” she says.

The day so far

The Senate will soon begin voting on a $95bn foreign aid bill for Israel, Ukraine and other US allies, ending months of negotiations over one of Joe Biden ’s top priorities and giving Kyiv another lifeline in its defense against Russia’s invasion. Twenty-five Republican senators have demanded that the Biden administration send federal law enforcement to respond to college campuses where pro-Palestinian protests have occurred, and called the demonstrators “anti-Semitic, pro-terrorist mobs”.

“The Department of Education and federal law enforcement must act immediately to restore order, prosecute the mobs who have perpetuated violence and threats against Jewish students, revoke the visas of all foreign nationals (such as exchange students) who have taken part in promoting terrorism, and hold accountable school administrators who have stood by instead of protecting their students,” the group wrote in a letter addressed to the US attorney general, Merrick Garland , and the education secretary, Miguel Cardona .

Among the signatories is the party’s Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell , and his deputy, John Thune . Josh Hawley , the Missouri senator who separately demanded the president deploy national guard troops to college campuses, also signed the letter.
