Creative Writing Courses Application Procedures

Macl students interested in creative writing.

UBC’s Creative Writing Program (CRWR) invites MACL students who want to take Writing for Children and Young Adults to participate in specific classes related to their degree.

Please note that students applying to the MACL Program who wish to take CRWR courses can choose one of the following options:

• Apply to do a hybrid CRWR thesis which includes writing an entire early chapter book, middle-grade or young adult novel, or
• Take some creative writing classes.

Applying for a Hybrid MACL/CRWR Thesis

CRWR/MACL faculty member Emily Pohl-Weary supervises MACL students who undertake creative writing theses. To satisfy the requirements for your Master’s Degree, you will write and revise an entire manuscript for an original early chapter book, middle grade novel, or young adult novel. It is an intensive process that includes significant revision. You are expected to participate in advanced classes at or around the same level as CRWR graduate students.

When preparing your application to MACL: In order to assess your suitability for this specialized MACL stream, please include a creative writing portfolio of approximately 20 pages along with your application. Your portfolio should include some work in your intended genre: early chapter book, middle-grade, or young adult novel. It is also recommended that you briefly describe previous creative writing experience in your statement of intent.

Hybrid CRWR/MACL Thesis Stream Students Taking CW Classes

Once you are accepted into the Hybrid CRWR/MACL Thesis Stream, you will be granted access to CW’s advanced Writing for Children and Young Adults classes.

Advanced CW classes meet for two hours weekly but include a significant amount of preparation. They are workshops with very little theoretical or lecture content, and are designed so that students generate original writing for children, which is peer workshopped by class members, as well as the instructor.

You may take up to 12 credits of advanced Writing for Children and Young Adults classes throughout your degree with a range of different instructors (see the CW faculty list for more information).

Other MACL Students Taking Creative Writing Classes

Other MACL students who are interested in taking CRWR classes in Writing for Children and Young Adults must send a portfolio of at least 10 pages of writing for young readers to Heather Miller ([email protected]) by May 1 . Also include a brief statement about your previous creative writing experience.

CRWR will assess your portfolio. It is likely you will be placed at an intermediate level, but may have the opportunity to advance. You can take up to 12 credits of CW classes throughout your degree with a range of different instructors (see the CW faculty list for more information).

Film Production & Creative Writing

The Master of Fine Arts in Film Production and Creative Writing is a unique program offering an intensive, diverse and collaborative environment for crafting literary excellence in films and television.

Program Overview

Our master’s program is primarily a film production degree with an emphasis on screen writing. The final thesis for this joint MFA is a completed film that is written, directed and produced by the student.

The degree is designed for students who have a comprehensive background in filmmaking and screenwriting who wish to pursue a specific vision that combines both disciplines.

Students interested in the joint MFA degree must be experienced filmmakers and have completed films on which they were a principal creator to submit as part of their portfolio.

Degree Requirements

The MFA in Film Production and Creative Writing requires students to complete 36 total credits following these guidelines:

• FIPR 533: Advanced Problems in Directing (6 credits)
• CRWR 506: Advanced Writing for Television (6 credits)
• CRWR 514: Advanced Writing for the Screen (6 credits)
• The 12-credit thesis requirement can normally be met with the completion of a professionally finished film 20 minutes long (shorter works to be considered on a case-by-case basis) and full written documentation and evaluation of the process
• Productions longer than 40 minutes may be eligible for 15 or 18 credits on a case-by-case basis
• FIPR 534 (6) Producing for Film and Television
• FIPR 535 (6) Alternative Cinema Production
• FIPR 536 (6) Documentary Development and Production
• CINE 534A (3) Seminar in Cinema Studies
• CINE 534B (3) Seminar in Cinema Studies
• Alternate courses to fulfill the 0 to 6 credits of electives must be chosen in consultation with the MFA Advisor.

The MFA in Film Production and Creative Writing is a joint program with UBC’s Creative Writing Department. Applicants must apply to the MFA in Film Production & Creative Writing, and completed applications will be sent directly to the Film Production program. Once accepted, the film program will arrange for the application and materials to be sent to the Department of Creative Writing for consideration into the joint degree program.

• Submit your UBC Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies application
• Include a resume of your film and related experience
• Attach a copy of official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended and are currently enrolled in. If your transcripts are in a language other than English you must also provide a certified translation
• Include a portfolio of completed films where you were a primary creator. These must be shared via accessible links, otherwise your application may be rejected.
• A description of each film you have submitted (title, length, production company) and your role on each project.
• A proposal for a thesis film. If your thesis is a feature-length film, you must also submit an alternate proposal for a shorter film. This proposal must include a description of the film, an outline, treatment or draft script and a proposed one-page budget.
• A statement of intent describing your reasons for wanting to complete the MFA Program.
• Applicants must also submit a portfolio of original screenwriting of at least 50 pages. This writing can be from a single screenplay or several different screenplays.
• Three letters of recommendation via UBC’s eReference system

Creative Writing

This two-year studio program offers workshops in the following genres: fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, writing for children, translation, stage play, radio, television, song lyric and libretto, screenwriting, new media, and writing for graphic forms.

The Creative Writing program offers a two-year studio course, with instruction by faculty who work in a variety of literary and dramatic forms. The program leads to a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing or a joint degree with another department, in which Creative Writing serves as half of the Double Major.

Admission to the Program

Students must have 3rd year standing 1 in order to enter the Major. Each spring the Program will accept applications to enter the Major the following September. Year 2 students who anticipate they will achieve Year 3 standing at the end of the Winter Session (see Promotion Requirements and students in Year 3 or higher, including transfer students, are welcome to apply. As the Major is highly competitive and the number of places is strictly limited, students must ensure they submit their full application by the deadline indicated on the Creative Writing website. All students should view the Guidelines for Prospective Creative Writing BFA Majors for specific guidelines and course descriptions before submitting their manuscript.

Major in Creative Writing

Lower-level requirements.

Students must complete 3 credits of 200-level CRWR 1 , or the equivalent.

1 These credits should normally be completed prior to applying to the Major. Note that success in a lower level course does not assure admission to the Major program; applicants are accepted based on the quality of the entire application package.

Upper-level Requirements

Students must complete 36 credits of CRWR 400-level courses in at least four different genres.

Students may not take more than 36 credits of CRWR 400-level courses, with a maximum of 18 credits per genre, where those genres are defined as follows:*

Double Major in Creative Writing and Another Subject

Students who have completed all the requirements for a Double Major in Creative Writing and another subject falling within the B.A. program may choose to graduate with either a Bachelor of Fine Arts or a Bachelor of Arts provided they have completed the overall degree requirements of their chosen degree (please see B.A. Requirements or B.F.A. Requirements ).

Masters of Design (MDes)

The Master of Design (MDes) is a 12-month, full-time professional graduate level program that blends critical design thinking, creative practice, and engineering principles within a culture of innovation, creativity and social and sustainable entrepreneurship.

The program is geared towards working professionals seeking ways to improve their leadership and practice. They will learn experientially the processes and approaches that would allow them to work more innovatively and creatively to address meaningful and practical problems of practice.

The MDes program facilitates a collision of expertise from science, technology, engineering, social science and art, from three supporting UBCO faculties—the School of Engineering, Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies and the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

The program will:

• prepare you to launch your designs,
• help you make space within the fields of global innovation and creativity, and
• set you up to lead a successful path as a design entrepreneur.

Nursing’s creative writing award announces winners

The 2023-2024 UNMC College of Nursing Creative Writing Awards announced winners for this year’s contest. The theme was “Nursing Does That,” encouraging students and alumni to write a story about an experience of how they were changed by caring for an individual who was different than themselves. 

This was the first year offering a contest for alumni, who could submit a story on the same theme.

“We received stories from all our five campuses and from all our academic programs,” said Mark Darby, assistant professor in the UNMC College of Nursing and contest chair. “Our alumni were very supportive, providing not only great stories but funds for our awards this year.”

Darby added, “The stories reflect the deep respect and care our students and alumni provide to the citizens of Nebraska. Nurses face difficult clinical situation and still provide high levels of care.”

This is the fourth year for the contest, which has provided more than $53,000 in awards and resulted in four student stories being published in the American Journal of Nursing.

The top award winners of the student contest will share their stories at a virtual banquet, available at this link , on April 25 from 5-6:30 p.m.

Please note that applications for the MFA in Film Production are accepted on a biennial basis.  Applications for Fall 2024 will open in late September 2023.

Film Production is a major component of Vancouver’s economy, as well as in cities across the globe. UBC has an over 45-year history of training some of Canada’s (and the world’s) brightest filmmakers and technicians. The MFA in Film Production focuses on the areas of directing, screenwriting and producing live action narrative or documentary film for students who already have a comprehensive background in filmmaking and wish to pursue a specific creative or intellectual vision in an academic environment. Our graduate and student work has screened at film festivals across the globe, and graduates have had key roles in films as diverse as District 9 , 65 Red_Roses , She's a Boy I Knew and The Editor .

What makes the program unique?

The film industry employs 36,000 people in Vancouver and pumps over $1 billion dollars into the local economy. UBC maintains partnerships and agreements with post-production facilities, rental houses, and professional and union organizations to facilitate student work, education, networking, and post-grad opportunities. Our faculty includes Rachel Talalay, a working director who has film and television credits in the US, the UK and Canada. Furthermore, students have the option to learn from and collaborate with UBC’s top-tier Creative Writing department and Theatre and Film Studies programs.

UBC offers the only Master's Degree in Film Production in Western Canada, and is one of the few MFA Film Production programs in the world to require an undergraduate degree in film production to be considered. Our courses are advanced and small; only 1-2 students are accepted every year out of the 30-40 that apply.

UBC is one of the top research universities, it would be a huge advantage for researchers to find resources to conduct research and seek collaborations. I believe that Vancouver, BC is a good place to start. After seeing the photos of the UBC campus, I immediately loved it.

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies establishes the minimum admission requirements common to all applicants, usually a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC). The graduate program that you are applying to may have additional requirements. Please review the specific requirements for applicants with credentials from institutions in:

• Canada or the United States
• International countries other than the United States

Each program may set higher academic minimum requirements. Please review the program website carefully to understand the program requirements. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission as it is a competitive process.

English Language Test

Applicants from a university outside Canada in which English is not the primary language of instruction must provide results of an English language proficiency examination as part of their application. Tests must have been taken within the last 24 months at the time of submission of your application.

Minimum requirements for the two most common English language proficiency tests to apply to this program are listed below:

Other Test Scores

Some programs require additional test scores such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Test (GMAT). The requirements for this program are:

Letters of Reference

A minimum of three references are required for application to graduate programs at UBC. References should be requested from individuals who are prepared to provide a report on your academic ability and qualifications.

Statement of Interest

Many programs require a statement of interest , sometimes called a "statement of intent", "description of research interests" or something similar.

Supervision

Students in research-based programs usually require a faculty member to function as their thesis supervisor. Please follow the instructions provided by each program whether applicants should contact faculty members.

Permanent Residents of Canada must provide a clear photocopy of both sides of the Permanent Resident card.

All applicants must complete an online application form and pay the application fee to be considered for admission to UBC.

Tuition & Financial Support

Financial support.

Applicants to UBC have access to a variety of funding options, including merit-based (i.e. based on your academic performance) and need-based (i.e. based on your financial situation) opportunities.

Scholarships & awards (merit-based funding)

All applicants are encouraged to review the awards listing to identify potential opportunities to fund their graduate education. The database lists merit-based scholarships and awards and allows for filtering by various criteria, such as domestic vs. international or degree level.

Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA)

Many professors are able to provide Research Assistantships (GRA) from their research grants to support full-time graduate students studying under their supervision. The duties constitute part of the student's graduate degree requirements. A Graduate Research Assistantship is considered a form of fellowship for a period of graduate study and is therefore not covered by a collective agreement. Stipends vary widely, and are dependent on the field of study and the type of research grant from which the assistantship is being funded.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA)

Graduate programs may have Teaching Assistantships available for registered full-time graduate students. Full teaching assistantships involve 12 hours work per week in preparation, lecturing, or laboratory instruction although many graduate programs offer partial TA appointments at less than 12 hours per week. Teaching assistantship rates are set by collective bargaining between the University and the Teaching Assistants' Union .

Graduate Academic Assistantships (GAA)

Academic Assistantships are employment opportunities to perform work that is relevant to the university or to an individual faculty member, but not to support the student’s graduate research and thesis. Wages are considered regular earnings and when paid monthly, include vacation pay.

Financial aid (need-based funding)

Canadian and US applicants may qualify for governmental loans to finance their studies. Please review eligibility and types of loans .

All students may be able to access private sector or bank loans.

Foreign government scholarships

Many foreign governments provide support to their citizens in pursuing education abroad. International applicants should check the various governmental resources in their home country, such as the Department of Education, for available scholarships.

Working while studying

The possibility to pursue work to supplement income may depend on the demands the program has on students. It should be carefully weighed if work leads to prolonged program durations or whether work placements can be meaningfully embedded into a program.

International students enrolled as full-time students with a valid study permit can work on campus for unlimited hours and work off-campus for no more than 20 hours a week.

A good starting point to explore student jobs is the UBC Work Learn program or a Co-Op placement .

Tax credits and RRSP withdrawals

Students with taxable income in Canada may be able to claim federal or provincial tax credits.

Canadian residents with RRSP accounts may be able to use the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) which allows students to withdraw amounts from their registered retirement savings plan (RRSPs) to finance full-time training or education for themselves or their partner.

Applicants have access to the cost estimator to develop a financial plan that takes into account various income sources and expenses.

Career Options

UBC MFA Film Production graduates can be found working in the film industry as producers, screenwriters, and directors. Some also choose to pass on what they have learned by working as instructors and professors at educational institutions.
