Creative Writing

Why study here, our research.

We pioneered the teaching of Creative Writing in the United Kingdom and in 2020 we celebrated 50 years of teaching it. We established the first Masters in Creative Writing in 1970 and the first PhD in Creative and Critical Writing in 1987.

Situated in Norwich, England’s first UNESCO City of Literature , each of our courses offers an opportunity to develop as a writer in a vibrant and supportive environment. Our year-round programme of literary events includes the Noirwich Crime Writing Festival , the hugely successful UEA Live (previously known as the UEA Literary Festival), and its student-run companion series, New Writing Live.

Our students join us from all over the world and progress to careers across the creative industries. The publishing success of our graduates remains unrivalled, and in 2017 one of our alumni, Kazuo Ishiguro, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Still the UK’s most prestigious Creative Writing programme, we’ve been awarded a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education in recognition of our continuing excellence in delivering innovative courses at a world-class level.

Course description.

About This Course

Prepare for a career writing for theatre, film or television with an MA that allows you to explore and produce dramatic writing across the media.

You’ll study both the theory and practice of dramatic writing, addressing contemporary critical debates, analysing written and performance texts, and experimenting with a range of techniques in original writing. You’ll develop your skills in constructive criticism and creative editing of your peers’ writing, creating a supportive writers’ network in the process.

You’ll be taught by renowned theorists, practitioners and visiting specialists through seminars, presentations, screenings, workshops, readings and performance visits. All with the rigour and professional insight that are the hallmark of our creative writing teaching.

The scriptwriting strand of our world-renowned MA Creative Writing has three core modules.

First, Dramaturgy, in which you will study the core principles of drama as explored from Aristotle to McKee and as embodied in a range of plays, films and TV programmes, from Antigone to Game of Thrones.

You will also take part in the Scriptwriting workshop, building upon your study of dramaturgical theory, where each week you will benefit from the scrutiny and feedback of your fellow writers and workshop leaders. You will incorporate this theory into your own writing practice in weekly creative development workshops, completing scriptwriting and planning exercises. Over the course of the workshop, you and your fellow writers will bring your exercises to the group for discussion and evaluation.

Alongside these modules runs the Process module, where you will develop a script for your choice of medium, building an idea from concept to realisation under the keen eye of an industry expert and exploring the modes of script development that are common practice for working writers.

Over the summer you will also write a dissertation, under the supervision of a member of our faculty.

Testimonials

Julia was an incredibly open, warm and easy-going coach to work with. And at the same time her feedback on my work was very detailed and specific. Julia is an incredibly experienced poet and at the same did not impose anything too contained or didactic in our session. Rather she listened and was incredibly attentive to the ways in which I learn and to my questions. The coaching session was inspiring and thought provoking. It was also highly accessible – insomuch that I was given rigorous and robust critique in an environment in which I could absorb and process. We also had some really enriching conversations. I’d recommend Julia as a coach to any poet/writer at the early stages of their creative writing journey.  Jessica Murrain
