Thus, fashion can also be political .

Below are five essay examples and nine writing prompts to help you create an eye-catching essay about fashion:

5 Top Essay Examples

1. why fashion is important by george k., 2. fashion: an important part of life by ankita yadav, 3. fashion as communication by eunice summers, 4. fashion 2022 by edudwar, 5. the effect of fashion on teenagers in school by anonymous on newyorkessays.com, 1. fashion trends and women, 2. fashion evolution, 3. fashion and starting a business, 4. effects of fashion on society, 5. the best fashion styles for men, 6. fashion trends in different countries , 7. careers in the fashion industry, 8. cultural fashion vs. modern fashion, 9. the best and worst of fashion trends.

“The clothes we wear has become more than merely a way to cover our nakedness; instead it has also become one of the primary ways in which people express themselves.”

George K explains that fashion separates individuals from the rest. A person can introduce himself to others for who and what he is through style choices. Further, the author expounds on how fashion is a very competitive industry that depends on one’s search for identity. The author also points out that every person is unique and thus needs a distinct style to fit them. However, because of constant peer pressure and criticism, an individual’s fashion picks can’t be entirely their own. Ultimately, George K reminds the reader that it’s not just the clothes but how individuals wear and feel in them.

“…if we can do something then it is choosing the right stuff like entertainment, adventure, fashion, etc. All these things can make us happy and are also an important part of life. Fashion always attracts and it is available for all,”

Yadav considers how fashion originated from people’s traditions and cultures and became what it is today through individuals adopting each style and making it their own. In the following sections of the essay, she defines fashion and lists its importance, including how it developed new employment options and how styles speak for the wearer.

In her conclusion, she encourages everyone to choose their styles and not to mind their age. Fashion helps everyone live life to the fullest.

“Fashion is an industry based on creating a need where there is none and nowadays, due to the current recession, I can understand that fashion may not be people’s biggest concern. But we cannot qualify it as ‘trivial’ since we are surrounded by it; each new generation of customers is highly exposed to commercial influences.”

Summers gives her opinion about the book “Fashion as Communication” by Malcolm Barnard . She identifies points in the work and shares her thoughts on them. The first point being those working in the fashion industry aren’t smart. As a Fashion Marketing student, Summers vehemently disagrees with this statement and recounts her experiences to counter it. She continues to analyze Barnard’s other arguments and agrees with some of them. Summers ends her essay by highlighting that fashion is too essential in modern culture and economic organization for it to be considered “trivial.”

“…the youth cares more about what they wear and how they look which could affect their status in their peer group and meddle with their mental health. Following trends and doing what everyone is doing like a sheep is never a good idea. Fashion is there to reflect your personal style, not copying what other people think is trendy.”

User Edudwar reminds people that fashion is not simply following what’s currently trendy. Fashion is there to give people the chance to show off their individualism and personalities and not present a fake version of themselves to be accepted by society. Additionally, he mentions that youth nowadays are more sensitive to what people think of them, so some will always do everything to follow trends, even if they’re not presentable or appropriate.

“Youths of the present times have indulged themselves in so much fashion that they do not receive sufficient time for other work… The time spent on studies is being used in watching TV programmes, reading fashion articles, or even finding the recent trendy outfits on the Internet.”

The essay discusses the real effects of fashion on today’s youth. The author focuses on kids zeroing in on finding the latest style instead of caring for their studies that directly affect their future. The essay also delves into how youths of yesterday had ambitions and goals in life compared to today’s youths, who prefer to have fun rather than study hard.

9 Writing Prompts For Essays About Fashion

To assist you with your essay, we’ve compiled nine exciting writing prompts you can use:

Some women follow fashion trends religiously. They are also more conscious of their physical appearance. Some even go to the extreme and do plastic surgeries to look better in clothes. In your essay, discuss what you think these trends do to women’s perception of their worth and beauty. Add which trends you believe are unhealthy and why there’s more societal pressure for women to be fashionable.

Each era had its styles that directly resulted from that time’s circumstances. Make a timeline of how fashion evolved and the factors that influenced them. At the end of your essay, pick what you think is the best fashion era and explain why.

For this prompt, include the relevant things a future fashion clothing boutique owner should bear in mind. For instance, they should always be on top of the fashion trends and know how to balance demand and costs. Then, find a boutique owner and interview them about their experience to make your essay more fun to read.

Tackle what makes people choose the clothes they wear daily. Some prefer their fashion to display their personalities while others merely follow what they think is popular. To make your essay more interesting, you can do a simple experiment: Go out in public on two occasions: while wearing your fashion picks and donning the latest fashionable clothes. Then, add your findings and how people reacted to you.

Essays About Fashion: The best fashion styles for men

Fashion for men is different from women. Although most brands dedicate their line to women, men also deserve to know what makes them look fashionable; this essay lists styles that are excellent for men depending on the setting and event.

What could be considered fashionable in one country can be seen as disrespectful in another. For this prompt, compile fashion trends many do but are unacceptable in other places. Reasons why may include religion or tradition. Use research data and cite reliable sourcing for a compelling piece.

In this essay, identify the career opportunities available in the fashion industry, including the steps to get there. Next, list the different job roles within fashion, and describe the responsibilities for each. Then, add tips on succeeding in that job and standing out from the rest. For an intriguing essay, conduct interviews with professionals within the industry and include this in your piece.

Our ancestors’ culture greatly influenced today’s fashion. Meanwhile, modern styles are those that the current generation uses. Write an essay about cultural and contemporary fashion’s differences, similarities, advantages, and disadvantages.

Fashion trends come and go. However, not all popular fashion is pleasing to the eyes. For this essay, compile a list of what is, in your opinion, the best and worst fashion trends. Then, describe why you have formed these opinions and describe the details of each outfit.

Essay: Why Fashion is Important

The Fashionisto

Published October 18, 2017

Updated November 3, 2022

Louis Vuitton 2016 Spring Summer Backstage

Fashion is one of the most critical industries in our world today. Style has become one of the primary ways in which people express their personality and distinguish themselves from those around them. With every New Year which comes and goes, new fashions arrive on the scene, and they all endeavor to be more colorful and fashionable than those which saw last year. There’s inspiration everywhere, from online retailers like Roden Gray to printed magazines. The desire to express one was present throughout human history.

People of all ages are addicted to new trends in fashion. There is a tremendous amount of competition within the industry and also among consumers. The style is also different among different cultures and nationalities, which is why it’s so exciting when one travels to various parts of the planet to observe firsthand how people dress in those countries. Our clothes have become more than merely a way to cover our nakedness. Instead, it has also become one of the primary ways in which people express themselves.

Garments which may fit one person may not necessarily be equally suitable for someone else. And even if those clothes are fantastic designer efforts, it does not mean everyone would be equally comfortable wearing them. Different people will need different styles and designs, which will be an expression of their uniqueness and personality before they will not be comfortable wearing that specific fashion design. Human beings are complicated creatures; everyone has different desires, dreams, and objectives that they deem essential to success in their life. Fashion trends are a critical aspect of that success.

There is a lot of discrimination among human beings and also a lot of criticism. People will do everything possible to avoid such criticism. Peer pressure continues to affect people throughout their lives, and it is a powerful motivator when it comes to crucial fashion decisions. It is also true that fashion design has reached a very sophisticated level, and therefore some of the most popular models can be very costly.

It has the result that such fashion may only be accessible to affluent people. It can make it very difficult for people of average income to compete in fashion designs. Fortunately, there has been a lot of progress by fashion designers to cater to middle-income consumers. It is why there are a lot of fashion designs available, which can make it possible for less fortunate people to own still fashion designs that will be of very high quality and attractive.

There are fashion items for every season and every occasion, making it possible for people to express themselves differently depending on the specific season or time of the year. Looking at all the consumer needs that have emerged in modern times, it becomes easy to see why fashion design has become such a specialized industry.

Another aspect that deserves contemplation is the fact that there is a measure of similarity in those fashion trends which aim at the low-income person. It is going a long way in avoiding discrimination or unnecessary competition because there is a lot of similarity in the designs which aim at this consumer market. Therefore, less affluent people can avoid unwarranted discrimination and criticism because, they are dressed very similarly in many ways to their friends, colleagues, or family members.

Care should be taken to avoid fashion designs of poor quality, especially in cases where failed fashion experiments are nevertheless mass-produced and then dumped on the low-income consumer. On the other hand, some poor people cannot afford anything better, leaving her with no choice but to purchase low-quality products.

Nevertheless, an eye for detail can be a blessing because this can help a person who may only have access to low-quality fashion items to mix and match those things very efficiently so that the overall result is nonetheless beautiful. There is some truth to the statement that it’s not what you wear but how you wear it, which is the most critical issue.

Unfortunately, many people never seem to learn how to combine different fashion items correctly and adequately. Knowing which colors go together is a rare gift that some people never master. Therefore, even affluent people with access to very costly fashion items often fail to do those things justice because of a lack of understanding regarding color matching.

Many people seem to think tight clothing is more attractive than a loose-fitting dress, and then they make fools of themselves by wearing unnecessarily close-fitting clothes. It is why it is essential to have at least a basic understanding of choosing your fashion items and mixing and matching those things for the best results. Access to the most expensive fashion trends on the market is undoubtedly a benefit. Still, it’s even more important to have a basic sense of how to maximize how the wearer will display those clothes and other articles.

Clothes are also known to impact people’s moods substantially; likewise, some colors are more effective than others in putting people in a better place as far as their mindset and emotions are concerned. Every person should do at least an introductory modeling course to understand how to make the best of their free clothes and accessories. Like we said earlier, it is not so much what you are wearing but rather how you are wearing it, which will ultimately provide proof of your competence as far as fashion and personal appearance is concerned.

Fashion Changes in Society and Culture Essay

Introduction, works cited.

It is worth noting that fashion is one of the most important phenomena of social life, which concerns and interests not only ordinary people but also scientists and researchers. From scientific knowledge, fashion has performed as an object of study for many philosophers, historians, psychologists, artists, and so on. All of them stressed that fashion was an element of human culture and it served as the basis for establishing sustainable social ties between people. The purpose of this paper is to consider the ways fashion changes flow through society.

The advocates for conspicuous consumption such as Thorstein Veblen and others suggested that the core of the fashion change lied in the need of wealthy people to differentiate themselves from individuals with poorer incomes (Smith 4). Therefore, the changes that proceeded in the industry were driven by the need for fashion artifacts that would delineate the rich from the other population groups. In that perspective, the possession of costly clothing and accessories determined the cultural and economic identity of these people (Pham and Ali Nasir 75). Georg Simmel also stated that fashion served as a platform for social differentiation; however, he assumed that while the rich wanted to differentiate themselves from the poor, the latter tried to imitate fashion trends to resemble the well-off people (Apriasz et al. 2).

Notably, in the second half of the XX century, the emphasis was displaced from the psychological perspective to consumer behavior. For instance, Herbert Blumer assumed that customers were the driving force in the fashion change (Alver and Caglar 480). He suggested that the role of designers was to identify the collective taste and follow it. Therefore, the social context of fashion change has been expanded, and, in a post-industrial society, fashion has become a catalyst for consumer behavior (Cao et al. 1). Meanwhile, Kawamura regarded this process as more complex and stated that fashion was changing under the influence of many other factors apart from the society with its demands.

Nevertheless, if in retrospect it was possible to track the way social transformations affected the change and spreading of fashion, at modernity, fashion standards acted as a factor of certain social trends. In the postmodern period, the socio-cultural and economic characteristics of society changed the nature of consumption and its functions (English 85). In particular, the pluralism of views was reflected in the character of fashion, which gradually started to synthesize in itself a variety of trends and tendencies. The events taking place in society predetermined the development of youth culture and such fashion, which was based on their views and values (Reilly 79). For instance, Picture 1 evidences the way fashion houses tried to illustrate the importance of being feminine, which was promoted by the culture of that time.

The dress by Dior (Reilly 82).

The main manifestation of the changes in fashion in this period was the creative use of existing attributes (Hudders et al. 72). Consequently, the periodicity inherent in sociocultural processes was evident in fashion as well (Acerbi et al. 6).

Thus, the phenomenon of fashion has the status of a paradigm. It is a conceptual model, which establishes principles of selection and use of material forms that reflect the processes taking place in society. Social transformations place people in a changing context and encourage the development of new forms of behavior. The reviewed patterns displayed the fact that the interdependence of the causes and consequences of changes that were taking place in the culture and social structure of society was vividly reflected in the phenomenon of fashion (Crane 235). At the same time, the changing of fashion in social time and the environment is not only conditioned by existing tendencies, but it coordinates their progression as well.

Modern fashion is a dynamic world that reflects the spirit of the times. It’s not just about clothing, but also about expressing one’s personality and values.

Fashion has evolved significantly over time. It has moved from being a privilege of the elite to being accessible to everyone, thanks to technological advancements.

Fashion is influenced by various factors like culture, media, celebrities, and even politics. It’s a way for people to communicate their identity and beliefs.

In conclusion, modern fashion is more than just clothes. It’s a form of self-expression and a mirror of society’s changes and trends.

250 Words Essay on Modern Fashion

Introduction to modern fashion.

Modern fashion, a dynamic and ever-evolving field, reflects societal changes and individual identities. As a form of self-expression, it serves as a mirror to the cultural, economic, and political shifts occurring globally.

Fashion as a Form of Self-Expression

In the modern era, fashion has become an avenue for personal storytelling. It’s no longer merely about following trends set by high-end designers. Instead, individuals curate their style, blending vintage and contemporary pieces, high-end and affordable items, to create a unique aesthetic that reflects their personality and values.

The Influence of Social Media

The advent of social media has greatly democratized fashion. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok allow users to showcase their style, influencing trends on a global scale. As a result, the power to dictate fashion has shifted from designers and models to everyday individuals and influencers.

Sustainability in Modern Fashion

In response to growing concerns about environmental and ethical issues, sustainable fashion is gaining prominence. This movement encourages the use of eco-friendly materials, ethical production processes, and a shift towards slow fashion – buying fewer, higher quality items that last longer.

Modern fashion is a complex blend of personal expression, social media influence, and growing sustainability consciousness. As we move forward, the industry will continue to evolve, reflecting the changing times and the diverse identities of those who engage with it. With its dynamic nature, fashion remains an exciting and influential aspect of modern culture.

500 Words Essay on Modern Fashion

Fashion is an ever-evolving phenomenon, a reflection of societal changes and individual expression. Modern fashion is a complex blend of aesthetics, functionality, and cultural influences, marking a departure from traditional norms and embracing diversity on a global scale.

The Evolution of Modern Fashion

The evolution of modern fashion is marked by a shift from conformity to individuality. In the early 20th century, fashion was largely dictated by social class and occasion. Today, however, fashion is more about personal style and comfort. The advent of fast fashion, while controversial, has democratized style, making it accessible to people of all socio-economic backgrounds.

Global Influences and Cultural Fusion

Modern fashion is a melting pot of global influences. Designers are increasingly drawing inspiration from different cultures, leading to a fusion of styles. This cultural exchange is not just about aesthetics, but also about fostering understanding and respect for diverse cultures. However, it’s crucial to navigate this space with sensitivity to avoid cultural appropriation.

Technology and Fashion

Technology has revolutionized modern fashion in numerous ways. From digital sketches and 3D printing to smart fabrics and wearable tech, the marriage of fashion and technology is reshaping the industry. Online shopping and social media have also transformed the way we discover and purchase fashion, making it a more interactive and personalized experience.

With growing awareness about environmental issues, sustainability has become a significant aspect of modern fashion. The industry is grappling with its environmental footprint, leading to a rise in ethical fashion brands and sustainable practices. Concepts like slow fashion and circular fashion are gaining traction, promoting longevity, recycling, and responsible consumption.

Representation and Inclusivity

Modern fashion is also marked by a push for greater representation and inclusivity. Body positivity and diversity are now front and center, challenging traditional beauty standards. Fashion brands are recognizing the need for designs that cater to all body types, ages, and races, signaling a shift towards a more inclusive industry.

Conclusion: The Future of Modern Fashion

As we move forward, the future of modern fashion lies in its ability to adapt and innovate. With challenges like climate change and social inequality, the industry needs to evolve sustainably and inclusively. Modern fashion is not just about what we wear, but also about the values we embody. As consumers, we have the power to shape these values and drive change, making fashion a powerful tool for social and environmental progress.

Lesson Plans and Ideas

B2 – Writing Part 1 (Essay) – The effects of fashion on people’s lives

Love it or hate it, we all follow trends and fashion. It’s also one of the evergreen topics that can be approached in many different ways. You can deal with fast fashion and sustainability, the newest trends during the fashion week, or do what I did and talk about its effects on our lives.

My inspiration to create Cambridge lesson plans comes in waves, depending on the students and their upcoming exams. One of my B2 students is taking her FCE exam at the beginning of March, which motivates me to craft lessons for her and ensure that she gets the highest score possible. I thought that this week we could review and tackle Writing Part 1. As this part is obligatory, it is essential to be well-prepared and ready to write the best essay possible while following and having a deep understanding of the writing assessment criteria.

Scroll until the end of the post to get the worksheet with the teacher’s notes, and the presentation in case you teach online (like I do!). This lesson material can also be found in  B2 Sample Paper 2 , and all the example essays are taken from  B2 First Handbook .

opinion essay about fashion trends

The other week in one of the podcasts that I listen to regularly, I heard about a fashion rule that we should all follow. Before you get dressed, think about three adjectives that best describe your style, and dress accordingly. I immediately thought that this activity could work well as a warm-up before the heavier part of the class, which is all about analysing the exam task and understanding the writing criteria. If you have a bigger group, you could ask them to write the three adjectives anonymously on sticky notes and then match the style descriptions with the students.

Once you match everyone with their style descriptions, present students with five  stylish  women. Students may work in pairs (or individually) and rank them from 1-5, 1 being the most fashionable and 5 being the least. Students present their order and justify their choices.

opinion essay about fashion trends

Introduce the writing task by showing the thesis of the essay –  Some people say the fashion industry has a bad effect on people’s lives . Divide students into two groups. Group A thinks about reasons that support this statement. The other group thinks of reasons against this point. Once groups have a few ideas, put one student A with one student B, so they can debate each other’s points and reach a final decision.

Now, show students an example essay which relates to the previous statement. Students read for gist and check if any of the ideas mentioned in the previous activity appeared in the text. Read it again and identify three main points that the text deals with. Are they positive or negative?  (There are one positive and two negative points) . Show the exam task and explain the rules of FCE Writing Part 1. Say that in this part, students always have to write an essay. They need to include two points mentioned in the task and one extra idea of their own. Read the text again and underline the parts of the text that mention all three points. Point out the structure of the essay and the purpose of each paragraph.

  • Paragraph 1: Introduction
  • Paragraph 2: Points supporting the thesis (job creation)
  • Paragraph 3: Points against the thesis (judging appearance and the price of clothes)
  • Paragraph 4: Conclusion

Now that everyone read the example answer at least three times, analyse the examiner’s notes. Explain the criteria used in the writing assessment – content, communicative achievement, organisation and language. I think that students must understand what they are being assessed on to perform well in this part. It will help them see that even though grammar and vocabulary are important, they are not critical, and it’s possible to get a good score, even with some mistakes.

Once they understand the criteria, it’s time to put on the examiner’s hat. Show two essays answering the same task as before. Give some time to read the answers and discuss which of the two is better and why. It’s obvious that the second one is way better, but students may already start justifying their decisions using the writing assessment criteria. Put students into pairs and ask them to score the two answers. Look at everyone’s answers and compare them with the actual scores and explanations. Discuss if any of the scores surprised them.

If you have some spare time, you can give 5 minutes to plan the answers to the same task as before. Explain the importance of planning and thinking before jumping into writing. If you can afford it and make sure that everyone hands in their essay, give them about 40 minutes to write their answers. You can even shorten this time, as there was plenty of time to think about the answers, and most likely students already know what they want to write about. If you don’t have that much time, you can set it as homework.

Since the lesson was quite heavy with a lot of reading and analysis, finish by discussing four short questions on fashion and style. Think about the importance of getting dressed well and people who decide what’s fashionable or not.

Hope you enjoyed this instalment of FCE practice! Click the files below to get the presentation and the worksheet with the teacher’s notes.

How current global trends are disrupting the fashion industry

In this episode of The McKinsey Podcast , McKinsey senior partner Achim Berg talks with executive editor Roberta Fusaro about findings from McKinsey’s The State of Fashion 2022 report. They cover the concurrent effects of the many challenges facing both suppliers and brands, including the war in Ukraine, the pandemic, and inflation.

After that: the state of anxiety tends to get a bad rap. But in our second segment, Dr. Tracy Dennis-Tiwary, author and professor of psychology and neuroscience at Hunter College, shares why anxious feelings deserve respect.

The following transcript has been edited for clarity and length.

The McKinsey Podcast is cohosted by Roberta Fusaro and Lucia Rahilly.

Return to normal? Not yet

Roberta Fusaro: Achim, the world has changed since we published The State of Fashion 2022 report. What are the changes that have had the greatest effect on fashion and the textile industry?

Achim Berg: The invasion into Ukraine is one of those topics not fully on our radar in November or December.

But that’s not the only change that has occurred since we published the report. We also didn’t know that Omicron would be the dominant variant in the first half of 2022.

We also did not expect that inflation would be a permanent challenge. We expected, like many governments, that this would be a temporary problem. We expected that the supply chain would normalize after two years of a pandemic. That also didn’t come true.

We did not expect an energy crisis.

We also didn’t expect that COVID-19 would be a big issue in China again, because China looked like the big winner of the whole pandemic at the end of last year. That’s the challenge of writing a report that tries to somehow predict or frame the future: things often turn out slightly different. But overall, our forecasts provided reliable insight and included topics we identified to drive the industry in 2022.

Supplier challenges

Roberta Fusaro: From the panoply of issues you’ve mentioned, what challenges do suppliers face right now?

Achim Berg: There are a lot of different challenges. It depends on which country we look at. Some are quite challenged.

The supplier side has a practical problem of delivering what is expected. But they’re also facing the issue of forecasting in a proper way because we don’t know exactly how the consumption patterns will develop.

The industry is always a couple of months ahead of the consumer, so they need to make some bets. In this environment, which is much more volatile than what we have seen in the last 20 years, it’s very difficult to make the right bets.

Supplier solutions

Roberta Fusaro: Given the increased risk, how should companies respond? And what are some things that companies can do to hopefully end up on the right side of these big bets?

Achim Berg: They should look for real partnerships and closer exchanges with brands because that would give companies access to data and would therefore make things more predictable.

On the other side, it’s worthwhile to think about how to flex the system to the maximum, because demand patterns are not as stable as they used to be. Brands and retailers will be forced to react more flexibly to these challenges. And the suppliers are, by definition, at the receiving end, so they will have to increase their flexibility even more.

Cost pressure will continue, so they will likely have to work also on the cost side, and also on their tier-two and tier-three suppliers in the whole system.

Different regions, different challenges

Roberta Fusaro: What were some of the more interesting data that came out from different geographies?

Achim Berg: On a global level, we’ve seen a faster recovery than what we expected 18 months ago. We had expected that the whole fashion industry would not get back to 2019 levels until the end of 2022. And on a global level, we already achieved that at the end of 2021.

We had expected that the whole fashion industry would not get back to 2019 levels until the end of 2022. And we already achieved that at the end of 2021. Achim Berg

You could argue that the fashion industry has shown more resilience and a faster ability to deal with challenges than what we had expected. Maybe we were too conservative in the eye of the storm. That might be another explanation.

The recovery was also quite different by region. Asia, with the very strong leadership of China, was the motor of the recovery right at the beginning. They had a very short dip and then they were doing quite well.

Europe had the toughest challenge to deal with, because they were lacking international travelers. Also, given the fragmentations of the markets, the recovery wasn’t that fast or that strong.

North America was remarkable. We’ve seen a V-shape recovery, which we had seen after some of the financial crises before. But we didn’t expect to see that here in the pandemic. If we look forward, it’s difficult to make predictions, as we discussed earlier.

China is currently quite challenged with its zero-COVID-19 policy, but we don’t know how long it will take to get recovery here. Let’s hope for the best, because that’s going to be very important in particular for the luxury part of the industry. Europe is currently doing better, because we see travel coming back. North America is still going strong.

It will heavily depend on how long the war in Ukraine continues, how long that will impact the cost of energy, and also how much stimulus the different governments will be able to provide after two years of continuous stimulus against the pandemic.

So the jury is out. We should prepare accordingly for some challenges we could face.

Think tech from beginning to end

Roberta Fusaro: During the height of the COVID-19 outbreak, we talked a lot about companies accelerating their use of technology. Has that momentum continued?

Achim Berg: Technology plays a very important role. We also just published the new State of Fashion Technology Report 2022 , which makes an important point: that we have to think about technology really end to end.

We used to focus more on the front end—everything that was more consumer focused, through e-commerce, through loyalty systems. But we are realizing now that the back end also needs to be digitized for many reasons.

Traceability from a sustainability point of view has become more important and will become even more important going forward. So digitizing the whole supply chain end to end is a big topic for many of our clients. And that’s also why technology investments for the fashion industry are expected to ramp up.

The importance of consumer demand for brands

Roberta Fusaro: Thinking about the challenges now for brands, what obstacles do these organizations face?

Achim Berg: It all comes down to consumer demand. And as I said, we had hoped that 2022 would mark the end of the pandemic, that certain freedom would return that would allow people to celebrate, to entertain. And the fashion industry was very ready to dress consumers exactly for that. And, to a certain extent, we see that that is happening. Some of the categories that were hammered throughout the pandemic, like dresses, high heels, even suits, have had a strong return in the first five or six months of this year.

We also expect that people will do a lot of traveling. Europe is clearly returning to the whole vacation industry; I think Americans will do the same, and Asia as well, with the exception of China. That will drive consumption.

In a way, despite a looming recession and inflation rates, we see that consumers have a kind of backlog and a desire to spend on fashion. The problem is that energy bills will continue to increase, and we don’t know how long the conflict between Russia and the Western world will continue.

The conflict will likely continue to have a negative impact on the cost of energy and on the cost of living. Realistically, we might see a lot of consumers returning from vacation and from a great summer, realizing that everything has become much more expensive. That could hit larger parts of the fashion industry—in particular, the discount, the value, and the midmarket segments. The jury’s still out on how luxury will play out in this environment.

We were all surprised by how quickly luxury returned from the lows of the pandemic. This return has mainly been driven by China, but also by a very strong recovery, and a fast recovery, in the United States. The demand for luxury is super strong at this point in the year. I’m more concerned with the Christmas business and, in particular, the outlook for 2023.

Innovate plans, flex systems, and manage costs

Roberta Fusaro: Thinking about that, Achim, what should brands do?

Achim Berg: Brands should prepare for a likely recession. If the recession is not happening, we’re all going to be positively surprised.

But—given the current inflation levels all around the world, driven by energy cost increases, and the fact that interest rates are increasing around the world—that will have an impact on a lot of things. It will have an impact on consumption patterns. It will have an impact on refinancing patterns and on the cost structures of companies. What we’re discussing with a lot of the clients is how to prepare for that.

On the one hand, that means having a robust plan for the demand side and for how to flex your systems, similar to the suppliers, to varying demands. The industry has been quite innovative in that respect over the last two years of the pandemic. This will somehow have to continue.

On the other hand, the industry will have to manage costs. Many of the leading players have started to tackle that by reviewing their investment budgets, reviewing their cost structures, and preparing for a challenging 2023. That is what brands will have to focus on in the coming months.

The winners and losers of 2022

Roberta Fusaro: Most companies in this industry have been challenged for several years now. How do they respond to these disruptions? And how do they find ways to invest in new technologies?

Achim Berg: 2020 was the worst year from an economic-profit point of view since we’ve collected data about this industry—probably going back to the Great Depression.

2021 was a recovery year for many. And in that respect, a more difficult 2022 and an even more difficult 2023 could have some devastating effects to the industry. Our report also shows that profitability is more and more polarized in the industry.

In 2020, less than one-third of the companies were value generating, while two-thirds were value destroying. So a longer recession and a more challenging environment will definitely lead to a shakeout in the industry. We also see there are a few companies we call the “super winners,” the top 20 performers of the industry. But you could broaden that to the top 20 percent of the industry that are quite healthy. These companies have already started to invest in technology and digitalization. They’ve invested in sustainability, they’ve invested in talent—all the things that you would want to invest in. They also have a more balanced, more global business. So they will likely get better through the months ahead.

Without any question, companies will have to do this transformation away from physical stores and toward a more digital business model. They will have to find ways to redirect budgets into those areas. That will be more difficult for some than for others, which will likely lead to even more polarization in the industry.

The importance of sustainability

Roberta Fusaro: Is sustainability one of those factors in thinking about how companies are going to transform?

Achim Berg: Sustainability is the big topic for the industry. It was the big topic before the pandemic hit and it continues to be the big topic.

I always say that we’re going through different stages. It took us a couple of years to really create awareness for the topic and for the industry to accept that sustainability is a big topic—not only on CO 2 , but also on worker rights, worker conditions, and pollution in a much broader sense. The industry has finally accepted the challenge.

A lot of companies have now made commitments, most of them until 2030. COP26 was a big event in that respect. We’re now heading into a phase where the industry has to deliver against those promises. And that coincides now with a phase where we likely have limited budgets and more stress on the demand side. So, without any doubt, it would have been much better in the end, and also for the planet, if we were having a stronger recovery after the pandemic. But that’s unfortunately not what we are facing.

On the other hand, the planet cannot afford an industry that’s not making progress. So, in that sense, companies will have to do all of that. They will have to deliver against the ambitions of digitalization, and also against the demands of sustainability.

Consumers have become more demanding in that respect. A lot of people have been at home throughout the pandemic. They have had more time to think about their consumption patterns. We’ve seen a big change—in particular, in Western Europe and North America—in how consumers think about sustainability and what they demand from brands. Therefore, brands will have to do it all. It’s not going to get any easier for brands in the whole industry in the next 18 to 24 months.

Roberta Fusaro: In the report, you talked about the use of digital “product passports,” which contain data about how products came into being and their impact on the environment. Do you think digital product passports are a good tool to help brands reach their sustainability commitments?

Achim Berg: Product passports and traceability are the two big topics when it comes to sustainability. Digitalization will be a key lever here: on the one hand, to provide the required transparency along the whole value chain, and on the other, to provide that information to an ever-more-demanding consumer who wants to have that transparency. Let’s not forget that there is a regulator out there that will request that transparency. And the supply chains are very complex.

There are different stages. It’s happening in emerging markets. It’s transported in most cases at least around half of the world. So all of that requires the use of technology to provide the transparency and the reliability that you need to drive the business.

Learning from the top 20 performers in fashion

Roberta Fusaro: What are the lessons that companies can take from some of the top companies in our research?

Achim Berg: Super winners have been outperforming the industry now for many, many years. That has led to the level of polarization that we have at the moment. We also expect that the top players will get stronger due to the next crisis we are facing, given the resources they have built and the brands and business systems they have built.

They are a constant inspiration for the rest of the industry. Not all of what they do can be replicated; many low-performing players have challenges in funding some of the things that the top performers are doing.

You need to be active in different geographic regions to balance risk. It also helps to operate across different product categories—a higher share of digital and a more consistent use of data are clearly beneficial to the performance.

And then, last, it’s the fashion industry. If you put your chips on the right trend, and if you have the brand heat that you wish for, of course you’re going to do better. And you can be like a phoenix rising from the ashes over the next couple of seasons. That’s the beauty of the industry.

We also see some strong brands now that were not that strong before the crisis. So, unfortunately, it’s a sliding scale for many. But there’s always some renewal and innovation and hope. We’re going to see some surprises over the next 24 months, without any question.

Roberta Fusaro: Thanks so much, Achim, for joining us today.

Achim Berg: Thank you, Roberta, for having me.

Lucia Rahilly: And now, let’s hear from Dr. Tracy Dennis-Tiwary from our Author Talks series about her new book, Future Tense: Why Anxiety Is Good for You (Even Though It Feels Bad) .

Tracy Dennis-Tiwary: The core message of the book is that we mental-health professionals have unintentionally given people some damaging information when it comes to anxiety. And we’ve essentially spread a couple of fallacies about anxiety.

First, it’s that anxiety is always a debilitating experience, it’s dangerous, and it’s even something we should think of as a disease.

That means that the solution would be to prevent it and eradicate it and destroy it at all costs, like we do with any disease. The problem with that, when it comes to anxiety, is that it is literally a recipe for making anxiety worse.

There’s a paradox of anxiety: the more we avoid it, the more it tends to spiral out of control. So we not only have more intense anxiety because we’re avoiding it, but we lose the opportunity to look at anxiety and its potentially helpful parts.

There’s a paradox of anxiety: the more we avoid it, the more it tends to spiral out of control. Tracy Dennis-Tiwary

Anxiety is an emotion that we’ve evolved to anchor us into the future tense. This ability to think into the future not only protects us but also makes us more persistent, more innovative, more creative, and more socially connected.

So this story that we have all come to believe about anxiety is actually really starting to get in the way, especially during a time like the pandemic when we can’t escape anxiety.

And that’s the second false idea that we’ve unintentionally spread—we mental-health professionals—that any experience of anxiety is a malfunction and a failure.

So what do we do? We start to try to fix it all the time. And we lose those opportunities to see how it can actually be a strength and a source of resilience. Anxiety can be very intense, very extreme, even, but that doesn’t mean that it’s an anxiety disorder.

A healthy mindset about anxiety is one in which we look at it very differently than we’re used to looking at it. We’re looking at anxiety as a problem to solve, but anxiety is a feature of being human. And when you look at the difference between anxiety and fear, it starts to help us understand that.

Fear is the present certainty. We’re absolutely certain that right now we’re in danger. But anxiety is not that. Anxiety is apprehension about the uncertain future. That is, we know that there’s something coming around the bend. It could be bad, but it could also be good. What anxiety helps us do is prepare to make those good things happen.

A second healthy mindset about anxiety involves this perspective about anxiety, that it’s information telling us there’s something happening in the future and we really care enough to make it happen.

When we start to think of anxiety not as this dangerous thing but as a helpful thing, that changes everything about how we then face anxious moments, whether they’re controllable or uncontrollable—it helps us cope with that at our best.

And a third aspect about having a healthy mindset about anxiety is that we think of it not as something that overwhelms us when we face the uncertain world around us but rather something that helps us navigate uncertainty. Because anxiety is an emotion that evolved to help us translate and navigate the uncertain world.

How does anxiety help you?

What it helps you see is that because you’re in the future tense and you care about making the good things happen in the future, it helps you see possibilities. It can make us more persistent. It can make us be more fluent to think outside the box to be innovative when we need to, because we see that there’s a possibility for something good to happen.

When we’re anxious, we also are more reward focused. We have higher levels of dopamine in our brain when we’re anxious. We typically associate dopamine as a reward neurotransmitter that we feel when we’re experiencing something pleasurable. Well, anxiety triggers dopamine. Why? Because dopamine helps us move toward positive outcomes.

It also triggers our social-bonding hormone oxytocin, which increases when we’re with someone we love. It’s one of the ways that we biologically bond to each other. And when we’re anxious, that hormone shoots up. Why? Because social connection, social bonding, is one of the best ways that we manage our anxiety.

In the book, I also talk about a three-part framework for doing something with anxiety, for working with it. One is that we remember that anxiety is information, and we need to listen to it.

Two is that sometimes anxiety is not useful information. We can learn to tell the difference, and when we do know that it’s not useful anxiety, we can use those great tools out there to let go and immerse ourselves in the present moment, get help through therapy, do those things that help us scale back from the future tense. The third guideline is to really hitch that anxiety, that information we’re getting about what we want in the future, to what we care about, to what gives your life a sense of meaning.

A veteran National Public Radio journalist slammed the left-leaning broadcaster for ignoring the Hunter Biden laptop scandal because it could have helped Donald Trump get re-elected.

Uri Berliner, an award-winning business editor and reporter at NPR, penned a lengthy essay in Bari Weiss’ online news site The Free Press in which he called out his bosses for turning the public radio broadcaster into “an openly polemical news outlet serving a niche audience.”

“The laptop was newsworthy,” Berliner wrote. “But the timeless journalistic instinct of following a hot story lead was being squelched.”

Weeks before the 2020 presidential election, The Post was the first to reveal the existence of the laptop that Hunter Biden left at a Delaware computer shop.

Uri Berliner, a veteran journalist with National Public Radio, criticized his bosses on Tuesday.

The Post published the contents of emails taken from the laptop, which shed light on Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine and China while his father, Joe Biden, was vice president during the Obama administration.

Initially, national security experts and former intelligence officials declared the laptop a hoax and was the product of a Russian disinformation campaign.

Social media sites like Twitter even barred its users from sharing links to The Post’s reporting.

The authenticity of the emails were later confirmed by independent experts and federal law enforcement officials .

According to Berliner, NPR’s managing editor for news at the time said that the outlet had no interesting in “[wast[ing] our time on stories that are not really stories, and we don’t want to waste the listeners’ and readers’ time on stories that are just pure distractions.”

Berliner wrote that NPR has become an "openly polemical news outlet serving a niche audience."

Berliner wrote in The Free Press that a well-respected colleague at NPR said they were glad the network wasn’t covering the story because it would help Trump win re-election. He did not name the journalist.

After the contents of the laptop proved to be authentic, NPR “could have fessed up to our misjudgment,” Berliner wrote.

“But, like Russia collusion [allegations against Trump that were debunked], we didn’t make the hard choice of transparency.”

Berliner faulted NPR for its refusal to cover the Hunter Biden laptop story.

NPR’s Edith Chapin, the acting Chief Content Officer, defended the organization in a memo to staff.

“I and my colleagues on the leadership team strongly disagree with Uri’s assessment of the quality of our journalism and the integrity of our newsroom processes,” she said.

“With all this said, none of our work is above scrutiny or critique.”

Berliner also took NPR to task for its coverage of the Russia collusion saga — which was fueled by allegations that the Trump campaign was in cahoots with the Kremlin during the 2016 presidential campaign.

He said that NPR “hitched our wagon to Trump’s most visible antagonist” — Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.).

Charges against Hunter Biden

COUNT 1: False Statement in Purchase of a Firearm

Faces a maximum of 10 years’ imprisonment; a fine of $250,000; 3 years of supervised release; a special assessment of $100.

COUNT 2: False Statement Related to Information Required to be Kept by Federal Firearms Licensed Dealer

Faces a maximum of 5 years’ imprisonment; a fine of $250,000; 3 years of supervised release; a special assessment of $100.

COURT 3: Possession of a Firearm by a Person who is an Unlawful User of or Addicted to a Controlled Substance

“By my count, NRP hosts interviewed Schiff 25 times about Trump and Russia,” according to Berliner, who said he “eagerly voted against Trump twice but felt we were obliged to cover him fairly.”

When Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating the Trump-Russia collusion allegations, found no credible evidence to support the charge, “NPR’s coverage was notably sparse,” Berliner wrote.

Berliner also faults NPR for its intense coverage of claims that former President Donald Trump (left) colluded with Russia and its leader, Vladimir Putin, to win the 2016 election.

“It is one thing to swing and miss on a major story,” Berliner wrote, adding: “What’s worse is to pretend it never happened, to move on with no mea culpas, no self-reflection.”

Berliner also called out NPR for pushing other left-leaning causes, such as subjecting staffers to “unconscious bias training sessions” in the wake of the May 2020 death of George Floyd.

Employees were ordered to “start talking about race,” he said.

NPR journalists were also told to “keep up to date with current language and style guidance from journalism affinity groups” that were based on racial and ethnic identity, including “Marginalized Genders and Intersex People of Color” (MGIPOC); “NPR Noir” (black employees at NPR); and “Women, Gender-Expansive, and Transgender People in Technology Throughout Public Media.”

According to Berliner, if an NPR journalist’s language “differs from the diktats of those groups,” then a “DEI Accountability Committee” would settle the dispute.

What Happened to the Wrap Dress?

A pandemic, the demise of “girlboss” culture and new values around what’s “flattering” have made the classic design seem outdated to some.

Diane von Furstenberg is talking to Andy Warhol, in a dark jacket, while Monique Van Vooren, in a lacy low-cut white dress, smiles and walks beside them.

By Jessica Testa

By Amanda Sanders’s estimate, she owns more than 100 Diane von Furstenberg wrap dresses. She has been collecting the style since the 1990s, after she graduated from college.

Ms. Sanders, 51, liked that she could “throw on a dress and look so polished and put together,” she said during a phone interview on a recent Friday afternoon as she was walking around Saks Fifth Avenue, where she was, in fact, wearing one of her wrap dresses (blue snake print, maxi length). “It almost felt like cheating.”

But in recent years, she has struggled to find the style in stores in New York City, where she lives.

“Now you have to seek it out,” said Ms. Sanders, a former costume designer who is now an image consultant. “Most of the better designers don’t make wrap dresses. I don’t come across them as often as I should.”

Diane von Furstenberg popularized the design in the 1970s, though she wasn’t the first designer working in the United States to be inspired by early Asian wrap-style closures. In the 1940s, Claire McCardell was also known for her utilitarian “ popover ” style. In her book “ What Shall I Wear? ,” she defined “ popover ” as “something that goes over anything. It is an apron one day, a bathrobe the next, a dinner dress, if necessary with lots of beads.”

Ms. von Furstenberg’s version was softer, stretchier and sexier, with snug arms and a tie-cinched waist. The hem typically fell below the knee. The V neckline pulled back the curtains on cleavage. The dresses were covered in prints: orange ikat, red leopard, brown with geometric shapes.

They were ideal for working women, hailed as both office-appropriate and “flattering.” After the initial 1970s boom — think Cybill Shepherd in “Taxi Driver” (1976) — the wrap dress enjoyed a resurgence from the mid 2000s to mid 2010s , when workplace empowerment again became a cultural focal point. Michelle Obama and Kate Middleton, among that era ’s most influential dressers, made it part of their wardrobes. It telegraphed competence and femininity. If you bought Sheryl Sandberg’s “Lean In” when it came out in 2013, you probably owned a wrap dress.

And now? Wrap dresses occupy a more curious category , like skinny jeans or ankle booties or long cardigans: once a closet staple, now a staple of closet clean-outs. Ms. Sanders may not be able to find them in New York department stores, but they’re readily available in Ohio thrift stores, said Kathleen Martin, who lives in Columbus and makes YouTube videos about thrifting.

“Specifically, I’m seeing the kind you might connote with 2010s business casual,” she said — with slinky fabric and ditsy prints. Sometimes the stores miscategorize them, Ms. Martin added, as robes instead of dresses. In 2020, during the early months of the pandemic, Vogue suggested wearing them as such.

Danielle Vermeer, the chief executive of a thrifting app called Teleport , once found a Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress priced at $5 at a secondhand store. The abstract black-and-white print was part leopard, part oil spill. In 2022, she consigned it with the RealReal, which sold the dress for $40 and paid her $12. (A new DVF wrap dress today starts around $378.)

“Post-pandemic,” said Ms. Vermeer, who is 35 and lives in Washington, “I think there’s been more of an openness to try different styles in an office or professional setting. In the 2010s, I was working in offices that were very masculine and very formal, especially my first couple jobs. I would wear wrap dresses or pencil skirts and button downs. That was the uniform. But now, for those in their early 20s, the attire for that sort of office has really shifted.”

Workplaces are more casual , filled with workers more interested in dressing to express their style.

“I still love them because they’re super chic and easy to put on,” Ms. Vermeer said of wrap dresses. The following day, she sent a photo from a Salvation Army in Chicago, where she had come across a Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress for $29.99. (“Not my size but it’s in excellent condition,” she said in a text message.) “But I can see for a 23-year-old today that it might seem very ‘Girlboss,’” she said, a moniker for ambitious young women of the 2010s who embraced corporate feminism and fell almost as fast as they rose .

Allison Bornstein, a stylist known for helping people identify their personal style keywords — and who offers FaceTime appointments with people who are, among other things, trying to clean out their closet — had another theory about younger people’s aversion to the style.

She said the form-fitting wrap dress might have been sold to “a generation who was going for the wrap dress less because they loved it and more because it made them look thin.” What if younger generations, more eager to embrace body positivity or neutrality , don’t care about what is flattering?

“They obviously want to look good, but that means something different to them,” Ms. Bornstein said.

In late March, Target introduced a collaboration with Diane von Furstenberg that included several wrap styles . One hewed closely to her original design from the ’70s. (Ms. Sanders bought that homage dress for herself, queuing with her teenage daughter at Target when the collaboration went on sale.) Frilancy Hoyle, a boutique owner in Seattle, purchased six dresses from the collection. She returned all but one.

To her, traditional wrap dresses just look “outdated,” she said.

Yet there is still hope for the style. Ms. Hoyle carries versions from the Brazilian brand Farm Rio at her store, Rabecca Onassis Boutique. They are not obvious wrap dresses; they have other design elements, like oversize puff sleeves or a high neck, which catch the eye before one even realizes the waist is wrapped.

“There’s a way to do a wrap dress that is so seamless,” Ms. Hoyle, 32, said, “that you do not even know that you’re wearing a wrap dress.”
