2022 Mitsubishi Outlander review: Going Rogue

The new Outlander is fundamentally a Nissan Rogue underneath, and it's all the better for it.

outlander movie reviews 2022

Mitsubishi makes a lot more than just cars. This Japanese conglomerate manufactures everything from TVs and satellites to air conditioners and even nuclear reactors. The triple-diamond brand also claims to build the world's only spiral escalator. But despite the groundbreaking products in other sectors, it's been a long time since I've been able to recommend one of Mitsubishi's automobiles. The 2022 Outlander , however, is so dramatically improved you should absolutely add it to your SUV shopping list.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander

  • Standard third-row seat
  • Good fuel economy
  • User-friendly tech
  • Superb interior

Don't like

  • Third-row seat is just for kids
  • Not as sporty as it looks
  • Needs more oomph

Going Rogue

Mitsubishi has been allied with Nissan and Renault since 2016. Being a part of this international automotive coalition gives the company access to all kinds of cool stuff, like platforms and technology. This is why the new Outlander is fundamentally a Nissan Rogue underneath. The two vehicles feature the same powertrain and major dimensions, but they are not carbon copies. The 2022 Outlander's tuning is totally different and it features unique interior materials. One other major distinction is the country of origin; the Outlander is assembled in Japan while the Rogue is screwed together in Tennessee.

Styling is another thing that sets this Mitsu apart from its Nissan sibling. The Outlander is slightly larger and far more attractive than before. I've got to say, this is a vehicle that looks much better in person than it does in photos. The front end is a lot more three-dimensional than it appears on a computer monitor or phone screen.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander: Outlandish no longer

outlander movie reviews 2022

Have we met before?

Excluding the plug-in hybrid variant, which is still the previous-generation model (for now, at least), just one drivetrain is offered in the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander : a 2.5-liter four-cylinder paired with a continuously variable transmission. If you're acquainted with the Rogue, this powertrain combination should be as familiar. The engine delivers 181 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, which isn't quite enough. Driven normally, this output is perfectly fine and has no trouble motivating the Outlander, but when you need to hustle or you're transporting a full load, some more zest would be appreciated. At times, this Mitsubishi feels a step or three behind its turbocharged competitors, which include the Ford Escape , Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 .

As for fuel economy, the top-shelf all-wheel-drive model seen here stickers at 24 miles per gallon city, 30 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined. In mixed use, however, I've been averaging better than 30, which is pretty remarkable.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL Touring - Nissan Rogue

Don't expect any underhood fireworks here.

Part of the reason this Mitsu is so economical is that it features a CVT. These transmissions are a  big  point of contention for a lot of enthusiasts these days, and while you may not love them, this one works reasonably well for what it is, responding quickly to throttle inputs and simulating gear changes under heavy acceleration for a somewhat more natural feel.

One classy cabin

The redesigned Outlander may be more attractive on the outside, but that's only part of the story. Slide inside and about five seconds is all it takes to realize this is a whole new breed of Mitsubishi, and it's seriously nice. Seriously.

From the clean, elegant dashboard design to the comfortable first- and second-row seats to the high-quality materials liberally employed, this SUV's cabin is absolutely gorgeous. This SEL model with the Touring Package features real aluminum trim on the center console, beautiful contrast-color stitching and semianiline leather. I also adore the subtle diamond texture designers added to the window switches, a pattern that's echoed on the air vent sliders, audio dials and driving mode selector. Nothing in this SUV looks cheap or feels flimsy, though the comely piano-black accents incessantly attract dust and smudges, so be aware of that and remember to bring some wet wipes.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL Touring - interior

The new Outlander's interior is beautifully done, with loads of premium materials and an attractive design.

The Outlander's front bucket seats are super comfortable, supple enough to cosset your body yet still plenty supportive as to not cause undue fatigue on long trips. The second row is plenty cushy, too, though a skosh more legroom would be nice. Setting this SUV apart from the competition is its standard third-row seat. This is a great feature to have, on paper at least, but it's super small, something Mitsu folks acknowledge. Really, it's intended for children only, so don't expect to cram your 6-foot, 4-inch uncle back there 'cause it ain't going to end well.

Making life a little easier, there's technology aplenty in the Outlander. Apple CarPlay is standard across the board, and on SE models and up it even connects wirelessly. Naturally, Android Auto is supported, too, though you'll have to bring a cable. If you're wondering, USB type-A and type-C ports are offered. Lower-end Outlanders feature an 8-inch infotainment screen, but this example is fitted with the fancy 9-inch display, which also comes with embedded navigation and a wireless charging pad. The infotainment system is, for the most part, straightforward and speedy, which is all you can really ask for, so no complaints here. If you need more screens in your life, a 12.3-inch reconfigurable instrument cluster is available, as is a 10.8-inch color head-up display.

Other available tech includes features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and automatic high beams, but the Outlander can be equipped with plenty of other amenities. And one must-have feature is Mi-Pilot Assist, basically Mitsubishi's version of Nissan's excellent ProPilot Assist adaptive cruise control system with lane centering. This feature works great, accurately tracking road lines and providing a very firm feel, much more so than competing systems. This practically makes the Outlander seem like a guided missile when you engage the system.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL Touring - wheels

This redesigned Outlander has some pretty attractive angles, dontcha think?

Refined, not sporty

When you're not living life at redline, this SUV's interior is impressively hushed, with minimal wind and road noise. In fact, it's quiet enough to rival some luxury cars, which is pretty shocking for a mainstream SUV.

The Outlander's steering is smooth and free of kickback, plus I love the thick steering wheel rim which is dressed up with perforated leather in this example. My tester's 20-inch wheels (18s come standard on the Outlander) also look sharp, yet they don't degrade the ride quality too much. This machine is reasonably firm but never abusive.

Mitsubishi is keen to bill the Outlander as a sportier alternative to other SUVs , but it isn't. This vehicle is comfortable, refined and efficient, but it really doesn't feel any livelier than competing car-based utility vehicles (especially when you bury the accelerator), which is just fine. It drives well for what it is and there's generally little to complain about.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL Touring - sporty

The 2022 Outlander is about as good as anything else it competes with.

Pricing and availability

You can look for the 2022 Outlander at Mitsubishi dealerships very soon. The base price for a front-drive ES model is about 27 grand, but with the Touring Package, a couple options and $1,195 in delivery fees, this SEL example checks out for $37,995, which is a chunk of change to be sure. Justifying that price, however, the new Outlander is basically as nice as anything else in its class and when you throw in an excellent five-year/60,000-mile new vehicle guarantee as well as a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, this Mitsubishi becomes all the more appealing.

Sure, I wish the Outlander had a bit more powertrain gusto and I don't always love that CVT, but its refinement, beautiful interior and loads of user-friendly tech are hard to argue with. In fact, this SUV may be better than the Nissan Rogue it shares so much with, which is a major win for the Mitsubishi brand.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Overview

Is the mitsubishi outlander a good suv.

The redesigned 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is a good compact SUV no matter how you slice it. The Outlander impresses with its poised ride and handling, luxury-esque interior, user-friendly infotainment system, and wealth of standard safety features. It sports a large cargo area, and its four-cylinder engine yields respectable fuel economy. The Outlander is also one of the few small SUVs with third-row seating, making it possible – but not comfortable – to fit seven passengers.

The only major knock against the Outlander is its powertrain. This 181-horsepower engine and continuously variable automatic transmission can scoot the Outlander around town just fine, but the pairing is far less enthusiastic at highway speeds.

Should I Buy the Mitsubishi Outlander?

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is definitely worth a look if you're shopping for a compact SUV . The Outlander offers upscale styling, lots of standard features, and seven-seat practicality, yet it still costs about the same as its five-seat competitors. That said, you may want to first consider rivals like the Honda CR-V or Mazda CX-5 if zippy acceleration is a top priority. The Outlander is lacking in that category.

2021 vs. 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander: What's the Difference?

Mitsubishi redesigned the Outlander for 2022, and this new model has almost nothing in common with the outgoing model. That's a good thing. The 2022 Outlander is slightly taller and wider, and this increase in size yields far more passenger space and cargo room. The interior benefits from higher-end materials, a sleeker design, and more-advanced tech and safety features. The Outlander’s ride quality and handling also show significant improvement.

The only omission of note is a plug-in-hybrid model. Mitsubishi has offered an Outlander PHEV since 2018. A new plug-in version is expected to rejoin the lineup for the 2023 or 2024 model year.

Compare the 2021 and 2022 Outlander »

Here are the key changes for the Mitsubishi Outlander over the last few years:

  • 2018: plug-in-hybrid model debuted
  • 2019: refreshed exterior styling
  • 2020: no major changes
  • 2021: lineup reduced to only the plug-in-hybrid model
  • 2022: fully redesigned with higher-quality materials, a roomier cabin, and improved driving dynamics; plug-in-hybrid model on hiatus

Mitsubishi Outlander Versus the Competition

Mitsubishi outlander vs. nissan rogue.

The Nissan Rogue is the corporate cousin of the all-new Outlander. These two crossover SUVs were developed together, and they share a number of components, from their safety features and infotainment hardware to their engine, transmission, and suspension systems. Both are priced similarly as well, at just under $26,000. That said, the Outlander and Rogue aren't twins.

The Outlander has unique styling inside and out, a higher towing capacity of 2,000 pounds (vs. 1,350 pounds in the Rogue), and a longer warranty. It's also a seven-seat SUV, whereas the Rogue only has five seats. The Rogue's big advantage is its fuel economy. It gets an EPA-rated 30 mpg in combined city and highway driving, which is an improvement of 3 mpg over the Outlander. Both SUVs are fine options in this class, so you’ll want to test-drive each to see which you prefer.

Compare the Outlander and Rogue »

Mitsubishi Outlander vs. Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 falls a bit short of the Outlander, at least on paper. It doesn't offer as much cargo space, it's not available with third-row seating, and its interior styling and materials lack the panache of the surprisingly luxe Mitsubishi. Where the RAV4 does stand out is under the hood. The RAV4 not only returns better fuel economy than the Outlander, but it also feels punchier in everyday driving. Additionally, the RAV4 boasts a higher towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds. For these reasons, we think it's a better choice than the Outlander.

Outlander Interior: Extreme Makeover SUV Edition

Outlander interior quality.

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is a more upscale SUV than its predecessor. The cabin is well insulated from wind and road noise, even at cruising speeds. The dashboard looks modern and clean-cut, and most of the interior surfaces are trimmed in rich upholstery and soft-touch plastic. The main switches and buttons on the dashboard operate with a tactile and substantial heft as well. All in all, this new Outlander’s cabin could give those of some entry-level luxury SUVs a run for their money.

Outlander Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

The Outlander's standard 8-inch and available 9-inch touch screens are intuitive and responsive. The infotainment system’s menu structure is simple, the graphics are crisp and easy to read. There's a mix of physical buttons and knobs below the screen as well, so you don't have to rely on a tap or a swipe to control every function.

While the standard gauge cluster does its job just fine, the available 12.3-inch digital instrument panel is worth the upgrade. This display is beautifully rendered and highly reconfigurable, so you can view as much or as little information as you want.

  • Standard infotainment features: an 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and a six-speaker stereo
  • Available infotainment features: a 9-inch touch screen, navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, a smartphone charging pad, HD Radio, satellite radio, a 10-speaker stereo, two additional USB ports, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster
  • Additional standard features: remote keyless entry, push-button start, and dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Other available features: proximity keyless entry, a panoramic sunroof, and tri-zone automatic climate control

Outlander Cargo Space

The Outlander has 11.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. However, this area expands to 33.5 cubic feet when the third row is folded, and it grows to 79.7 cubic feet when the second and third rows are folded. That’s more total cargo space than any other compact SUV provides, including the Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester . A manual liftgate comes standard, and a hands-free power liftgate is optional.

How Many People Does the Outlander Seat?

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is a three-row SUV with seven seats, one of only two compact SUVs with three rows. The other is the Volkswagen Tiguan .

The Outlander provides ample space in the first row, even for tall occupants, and the front seats feel cushy and highly supportive. Outward visibility is impressive to the front and sides of the SUV. The second row is accommodating, with comfy seats and sufficient headroom and legroom for average-size adults. While the third-row seats are handy to use in a pinch, they're only roomy enough for small kids, and even then, the seating position is pretty uncomfortable. Accessing the third row is a squeeze as well.

Cloth upholstery and a power-adjustable driver’s seat are standard. Options include synthetic and genuine leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, a heated steering wheel, and rear sunshades.

Outlander and Child Car Seats

The Outlander has two full sets of LATCH connectors for the second-row outboard seats and a tether anchor for the middle seat.

Outlander Performance: City Slicker

Outlander engine.

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 181 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive come standard. All-wheel drive is optional.

This powertrain is merely sufficient for day-to-day driving. The Outlander shuttles off the line briskly and feels lively enough around town. The transmission does a convincing imitation of a traditional automatic with its simulated gear shifts, at least at lower speeds.

The pairing isn’t as smooth on the highway though, especially with extra cargo and passengers in tow. The engine struggles to haul the SUV along at these speeds, and it tends to rev loudly, which can be tiresome on long road trips. Passing another vehicle requires patience.

Outlander Gas Mileage

The Outlander gets an EPA-rated 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, which is pretty good for a compact SUV . Upgrading to all-wheel drive only drops the highway rating by 1 mpg.

Outlander Ride and Handling

The 2022 Outlander may not be the sportiest pick in this competitive class, but it holds its own. The Outlander glides comfortably over rough road surfaces and broken pavement, which is somewhat surprising given the large 20-inch wheels and thin tires fitted to most models. The steering is quick and responsive, though a bit lightly weighted, and the SUV's body motions are well-controlled around turns. The brakes provide confident stopping power.

The Outlander's 8.4 inches of ground clearance, various traction control modes, and optional all-wheel-drive system ensure it can tackle the occasional off-pavement excursion. But overall, this SUV is better suited for traversing snowy streets than actual off-road driving.

Outlander Towing Capacity

The Mitsubishi Outlander is rated to tow up to 2,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Which Mitsubishi Outlander Model Is Right for Me?

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander comes in five trims: ES, SE, SE Launch Edition, SEL, and SEL Launch Edition. Regardless of trim, all models are equipped with seven seats, a 181-horsepower four-cylinder engine, and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Front-wheel drive is standard. All-wheel drive is an $1,800 option.

The entry-level Outlander ES is a fine choice for most shoppers, as it comes well-equipped with standard tech and safety features. If you want amenities like heated front seats or a power liftgate though, you’ll need to upgrade to at least the SE model.

Mitsubishi Outlander ES

The base model Outlander ES costs $25,795. Standard features include an 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, two USB ports, a six-speaker stereo, remote keyless entry, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, cloth upholstery, and 18-inch wheels.

A variety of safety features are also standard, including a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, LED headlights with automatic high beams, front and rear collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, driver drowsiness monitoring, and a rear seat alert.

Options include a $495 tow hitch and receiver, as well as a $1,000 Convenience package with 20-inch wheels.

Mitsubishi Outlander SE

The Outlander SE costs $28,845. This trim gains a 9-inch touch screen, navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, HD Radio, satellite radio, four USB ports, a smartphone charging pad, proximity keyless entry, synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, a hands-free power liftgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, LED fog lights, front parking sensors, a surround-view parking camera system, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, road sign recognition, and 20-inch wheels.

Options include the tow package and a $2,300 Tech package, which bundles together a digital gauge cluster, a 10-speaker Bose stereo, and a panoramic sunroof.

Mitsubishi Outlander SE Launch Edition

The Outlander SE Launch Edition carries a $29,995 starting price and adds the contents of the Tech package.

Mitsubishi Outlander SEL

The ritzy Outlander SEL trim starts at $31,945, and it includes all of the SE features plus leather upholstery, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, heated rear seats, and tri-zone automatic climate control.

Options include a tow package and a $2,700 Touring package, which adds rear sunshades, a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, a 10-speaker stereo, and a panoramic sunroof.

Mitsubishi Outlander SEL Launch Edition

The range-topping SEL Launch Edition costs $35,345. It gains all-wheel drive plus the contents of the Touring package.

The Final Call

Mitsubishi's redesign of the Outlander has catapulted it from a distant last place in prior years to a true contender in the compact SUV class . The Outlander makes a statement with its upscale cabin, seven-seat layout, class-leading cargo capacity, and intuitive tech features. It also rides comfortably, and it's backed by a long warranty. As it stands, an uninspiring engine and transmission pairing is the only thing holding the Outlander back.

Don't just take our word for it. Check out comments from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.

  • "The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander isn’t just redesigned, it’s a thorough rethink on how to attack the compact crossover marketplace. Not only that, it’s vaulted Mitsubishi from an also-ran to a solid contender for your hard-earned bucks." -- Autoblog
  • "Even with our enthusiast-slanted gripes and its underwhelming powertrain, the 2022 Outlander finally has some style and substance to compete against today's top compact crossovers. … Credit Nissan with the assist, but Mitsubishi made its own decisions and took its own chances to transform the Outlander from punchline to prime time." -- Car and Driver
  • "Sure, I wish the Outlander had a bit more powertrain gusto and I don't always love that CVT, but its refinement, beautiful interior and loads of user-friendly tech are hard to argue with. In fact, this SUV may be better than the Nissan Rogue it shares so much with, which is a major win for the Mitsubishi brand." -- CNET

EXPERT REVIEW

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Review: From Outcast to Outstanding

mitsubishi outlander 2022 09 exterior profile silver jpg

By Aaron Bragman

The verdict: An all-new platform transforms the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander from a quirky, dated entry in the compact crossover field to a sophisticated, technology-packed, desirable SUV.

Versus the competition: Shared parts and technology with the latest Nissan Rogue have made the all-new Mitsubishi Outlander fully competitive with offerings like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4 and others.

Automakers often throw around phrases like “all-new” and “significantly redesigned” when introducing new models, but let’s be honest: Usually, an “all-new” model has a lot of the old model’s parts and equipment in it. Such is not the case with the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander, at least not when compared with the outgoing 2020 Outlander (there was no 2021 model). The new one really is all new from Mitsubishi’s standpoint because it’s a product of the brand’s new partnership with the global Renault-Nissan Alliance — meaning that the bones of the new Outlander are largely the same as those of the new 2021 Nissan Rogue. Same engines, same transmissions, same chassis underneath, but with very different-looking styling, a different interior and a different tuning of things like the suspension and all-wheel-drive software. And after driving the new ’22 Outlander through the farmlands of rural Michigan for a day, I came away mightily impressed with the fully competitive new compact crossover that Mitsubishi is bringing to play in the already-crowded field of worthy alternatives.

It Looks a Lot Better in Person

You’re going to have to trust me on this one, at least until the new Outlander starts showing up on American roads, but it actually does look considerably better in person than it does in pictures and videos. The extremely bold (and a little weird) front end does take some getting used to, but the new Outlander’s overall look is decidedly distinctive and shows some interesting styling elements that differentiate it from other SUVs.

As more new models go for more carlike looks (such as the latest Ford Escape), the Outlander instead maintains its upright, faceted trucky/SUV profile with a flat roof instead of a sloping one. Prominent fenders and blunt elements in the face and tail emphasize horizontal width instead of vertical tallness. It most certainly does not look like the Nissan Rogue with which it shares its bones; they both have their own family styling that makes them appropriate in their own showrooms. It also features optional 20-inch wheels in addition to the standard 18-inchers, but you’re actually much more likely to see it with those 20s out in the world, as they come standard on all but the Outlander’s base trim level. Mitsubishi says that means likely 80-90% of Outlanders will have those big wheels, adding to its distinctiveness. I’m actually going to call the Outlander’s styling one of its more successful elements — it’s certainly going to stand out in a parking lot full of lookalike two-box crossover blobs.

mitsubishi outlander 2022 10 angle exterior rear silver jpg

Drives Like a Proper Modern Crossover

Perhaps the most striking thing about the new Outlander is how much more competitive it is in its class versus the quirky, old-style model it replaces. Some people will lament the passing of one of the last true Japanese-style SUVs from our shores, but Mitsubishi is likely to find a lot more success with the new Outlander, as it is much, much more in tune with shoppers’ tastes these days. It starts with the powertrain, a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that pumps out an uninspiring 181 horsepower and 181 pounds-feet of torque. It’s mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission that’s surprisingly well tuned to the four-banger’s meager output, allowing for acceptably responsive around-town driving. It features paddle shifters for some reason (CVTs don’t actually have any gears to shift) and software that approximates the feel of a gear-type transmission so that it doesn’t feel too different in how it operates; suffice it to say you’ll almost never touch these paddle shifters. Front-wheel drive is standard for the Outlander and all-wheel drive an option. Despite sharing the same components you’d find underneath a 2021 Nissan Rogue, the AWD system is tuned to Mitsubishi’s requirements, the company says, allowing it to receive Mitsu’s Super All-Wheel Control system branding.

Don’t ask too much of this powertrain and you’ll be happy enough calmly motoring around town. Put your foot down and ask it to give it all she’s got, however, and you’ll definitely be left wondering why the Outlander doesn’t have a turbocharger to assist in moving around its sizable figure. Highway entrance ramps and two-lane passing maneuvers require advance planning and maybe a shift into the Outlander’s Tarmac mode to improve transmission performance and throttle response. For the vast majority of owners, the Outlander’s acceleration will be adequate since it’s not meant to be a sports car.

What the Outlander lacks in driveline entertainment, it instead provides in chassis refinement, handling balance and excellent body control. Despite the 20-inch wheels and low-profile tires, the Outlander rides relatively smoothly, soaking up Michigan’s cratered road imperfections with a sophistication missing from the previous model in my testing. The worst roads do still affect the Zen of the cabin, but there’s no harshness or bounciness as in some short-wheelbase crossovers with big wheels. The steering feel is on the heavy side, but the huge, girthy steering wheel feels great in your hands, giving you the sensation of extra control without changing much except the size of the rim. Despite it being a fairly tall SUV, the Outlander doesn’t feel tippy or top-heavy at all — body control is excellent in sweepers or in urban environments, making for a comfortable, pleasant, decidedly unquirky driving experience. This is something of a contrast from how the Outlander used to be and is a welcome development that gives us hope for Mitsu’s future products.

So Good Inside, Let’s Call It the ‘ Win terior’

The dramatic departure from the prior Outlander doesn’t stop with the way it looks outside — the interior also is a massive improvement over the outgoing model. It’s larger in both width and length, providing more legroom for occupants front and rear. It also includes something of questionable utility: a standard third row, sized only for kids who have graduated from child-safety seats but aren’t yet approaching adult dimensions. Even Mitsubishi admits the third row is only for occasional use, and I almost wish there were a delete option for this feature so that the rear cargo area could be maximized instead. Even with the sliding second row and the uncommon 40/20/40 split to the folding rear seatbacks, the third row really feels more like a foreign-market tax compliance feature than useful kit.

Regardless of the third-row quirkiness, the rest of the interior is extremely well done. My test vehicle was a top SEL version the with Touring Package, meaning it had exclusive semi-aniline leather done up in a quilted and stitched pattern on the seats, dash and doors. But the attention to detail of the interior goes well beyond the soft-touch padding and authentic leather and metal materials everywhere (you won’t find any wood, fake or otherwise, in the Outlander). It’s small items like the way every knob and window switch features a knurled texture, or the enormous 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster that’s big, bright and highly legible, and can also be switched for something more custom looking at the touch of a button. This trim level features a head-up display, but it does come with the odd quirk of locating the speedometer readout slightly off to one side instead of centered in front of the driver.

mitsubishi outlander 2022 25 front row instrument panel interior jpg

The interior layout is very different from the old Outlander, as well. You sit a lot lower in the new one, with a tall dash and beltline all around you that creates a more imposing, trucklike feel. The seats are comfortable and supportive front and rear, and backseat legroom is plentiful thanks to the sliding second row. A 9-inch touchscreen is standard in higher trims (an 8-inch touchscreen is standard), and it too is a vast improvement over the positively ancient systems Mitsubishi had been using in the old model. Knobs are present instead of touch-sensitive sliders, and the overall design is big, bright and easy to use.

The whole vehicle feels a class above a Toyota RAV4 or Volkswagen Tiguan. Mitsubishi’s focus on providing a premium experience was quite evident even in the preproduction model I drove. Mitsubishi is gunning for the top offerings from Hyundai and Kia, and it shows with surprise-and-delight items like headlight washers (AWD models) and separate power close and lock buttons on the liftgate. The additional lock button is one you typically find only on German luxury SUVs that cost two to three times as much as an Outlander.

Priced in the Sweet Spot

The new Outlander starts at the higher end of compact SUV pricing, with a base price of $26,990 (prices include destination) for a FWD SE trim coming in a little higher than some of its competitors. Prices range up to a high end of $37,640 for an AWD SEL with the Touring Package, which is also pretty much on par with the top trims for competing models, all of which tend to operate within this price range.

mitsubishi outlander 2022 48 backseat folding seats jpg

What do competing models have that the Outlander doesn’t? Hybrid and plug-in-hybrid models. (Mitsubishi continues to sell the Outlander PHEV with a powertrain revision for 2021, but it’s based on the old Outlander.) Ford, Honda, Hyundai and Toyota all offer electrified versions of their new compact SUVs, but for now, the all-new Outlander will soldier on with a conventional gasoline engine only. If that’s not an impediment to your consideration, then it’s time to add a stop at your local Mitsubishi dealer to your to-do list as you shop for a new compact crossover. The new 2022 Outlander is fully competitive in the compact crossover class, and even offers among the best warranty coverage — better than the Nissan Rogue. It deserves to be on your shopping list.

outlander movie reviews 2022

Now streaming on:

I am tempted to describe the plot of "Outlander" as preposterous, but a movie about an alien spaceship crashing into a Viking fjord during the Iron Age is likely to be preposterous. Two alien life forms survive the crash: Kainan, and a monster known as "The Moorwen." Kainan, played by Jim Caviezel , looks exactly like a human being. The Moorwen looks like a giant, speedy, armored hippo-beetle with a toothy front end designed in the same forges of hell that produced the alien in " Alien ."

Kainan was returning from the Moorwen's home planet, which his race had terraformed, not quite wiping out all the Moorwens. The creatures counterattacked, wiping out most of Kainan's fellow settlers; what he doesn't realize is that one Moorwen was on board ship when he blasted off. Kainan uses a handy device to pump the local Earth language (Viking, spoken in English) into his mind through his eyeball, and soon encounters the nearest Viking village.

Having seen more than a few movies, we intuit that this village will contain a venerable king (Rothgar, played by John Hurt ), his bodacious daughter (Freya, played by Sophia Myles ), a jealous young warrior (Wulfric, played by Jack Huston ) and a menacing dissident (Gunnar, played by Ron Perlman ). There are also numerous villagers who stand around in the background looking intensely interested.

The village is suspicious of this strange "outlander." Then Vikings start to disappear in the forest, and Kainan realizes he has brought along a passenger. After he saves Rothgar from the Moorwen, he wins royal favor and organizes the village in a plan to lure the beast into a deep pit with stakes at the bottom and burn it alive.

I began my study of science fiction at the age of 9, with Tom Corbett, Space Cadet. I grew to love the authors who incorporated as much science as possible: Clarke, Asimov, Heinlein. They would have had questions about Kainan. For example, is he as human as he appears? It seems unlikely from a Darwinian point of view that two human species should evolve independently and contemporaneously on separate worlds. Even more so that they would share common sexual feelings and be able to mate, though that is precisely what Kainan and Freya propose.

But yes, their love flowers, against a backdrop of Arthurian romance. The Moorwen is the dragon, of course. And much depends on a sword mighty enough to pierce its armor. To forge this Excalibur, Kainan dives into the fjord and retrieves scrap steel from the wreckage of his ship, thus bringing the Iron Age to a quick close -- in this village, anyway. The climax involves the usual violent and incoherent special-effects scenes, after which Rothgar gives Kainan the hand of his daughter, and Kainan and Freya presumably retire to discover if separate evolutionary paths have outfitted them with compatible fixtures.

"Outlander" is interesting as a collision of genres: the monster movie meets the Viking saga. You have to give it credit for carrying that premise to its ultimate (if not logical) conclusion. It occurs to me, however, that the Moorwen had legitimate reason to be grieved. First Kainan's race appropriated the Moorwen planet for its own purposes, then it massacred the Moorwens, now it was picking off a survivor. Do you think genocide or colonialism are concepts to be found in "Outlander"? Not a chance. That's because Kainan is so human, and the Moorwens are, well, just not our sort.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander First Look Review: Blazing Ahead

The all-new Outlander has a big job to do.

Launched back in 2002, the Mitsubishi Outlander has become a vital part of the Japanese automaker's North American lineup. And now the fourth-generation has been officially unveiled. The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is all-new and it features the brand's bold new exterior styling language.

Thanks to alliance partner Nissan, the Outlander rides on the same platform as the also new Rogue, sharing the Nissan's engine and transmission. The new Outlander also features an array of innovative technologies that makes it an ideal daily driver and an adventure-seeking crossover. It's not a body-on-frame SUV like the old Montero, but it's equipped with a number of features for light off-roading coupled with a much-improved interior.

Bold Exterior Styling

Mitsubishi went with a daring new look for the Outlander. It's a stylish compact crossover, no doubt. Up front there's the Dynamic Shield grille that helps to contribute to the crossover's more SUV-like stance, which is somewhat a reminder of the old Montero Sport.

The split headlight design featuring standard LEDs and daytime running lights is directly inspired by the Engelberg Tourer Concept. A tri-zone lighting design, incorporating the LED fog lights and high and low beams, is at the lower bumper. Out back, the horizontal t-shaped taillights further contribute towards the vehicle's widened stance appearance. The vehicle's sides are adorned by strong character lines running through the door handles and at the bottom of the doors. A set of 20-inch wheels are optional and 18-inch wheels are standard.

The wide and very noticeable D-pillar looks pretty cool from the outside but the lack of sunlight could make third-row passengers feel a bit claustrophobic.

Three-Rows Of Seating

The 2022 Outlander has three rows of seats allowing up to seven passengers, though third-row occupants might feel a tad cramped. The overall interior layout should look familiar because it is, more or less, taken directly from the new Rogue. The optional 12.3-inch digital instrument screen, 10.8-inch head-up display, and electronic gear shifter, and HVAC controls are pure Rogue. The 8-inch (optional 9-inch) infotainment screen, compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also sourced from the Nissan. Wireless smartphone charging is another option.

Other optional features, depending on trim, include tri-zone automatic climate control, rear door sunshades, a panoramic sunroof, and a 10-speaker Bose audio system.

Although the Outlander is two-inches shorter than its predecessor, legroom has increased between all rows of seats due to a longer wheelbase. Front seats have an additional one inch, while the second row has an extra 1.1 inches. The seats can be ordered in light gray or black and the top-end SEL trim features leather upholstery. Semi-aniline leather seats are optional, too. The base ES has fabric seats and the mid-range SE has black suede combination seats and piano black trim on the dash.

Power And Safety

The sole engine currently available is a 2.5-liter inline-four rated at 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque, which routes power to the front or all four wheels through a CVT. This is the same engine and transmission found in the new Rogue. Eventually, a plug-in hybrid powertrain will arrive. Although the current engine is not overly powerful, it should be good enough for most Outlander owners. It's also quite fuel efficient. The Rogue is rated at 26/32/28 mpg for FWD models and 25/31/27 for AWD variants. We don't expect the Outlander's ratings to differ greatly, if at all.

Buyers should be drawn to the Super All-Wheel Control AWD system. It integrates a hydraulic center clutch to distribute torque immediately to the front and rear axles rather than waiting to detect wheel slippage to send that power to one of the axles. AWD models have six driving modes, while FWD versions get five.

Optional safety items include the automaker's advanced MI-PILOT Assist system boasting adaptive cruise control, lane-change assist, traffic sign recognition, hill decent control, a forward collision mitigation system, and a multi-view camera, among other things.

Pricing And Competition

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander will carry a starting price of $25,795 not including the $1,195 destination fee. Sales will get underway nationwide this April.

The compact crossover segment is arguably the most competitive one out there. Although the Outlander shares its platform, engine, and many other things with the Nissan Rogue , buyers will be drawn to its rugged exterior styling. Other competitors include the Toyota RAV4 , Honda CR-V , Subaru Forester, Kia Sportage, and the Hyundai Tucson.

Mitsubishi has struggled in recent years, mostly due to a lack of new product. The 2022 Outlander aims to change that and, like its predecessors, should guarantee a steady stream of customers once again.

I hope a recall's coming for the 2022 Outlander

Yesterday we picked up our stylish new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander ES at a dealership 180 miles from our home. It was a windy day and our almost three hour drive home became a hair-raising experience. When we left the dealership and got on the highway the front hood of the vehicle began lifting and flexing with the wind. My husband thought it wasn't properly latched and stopped to remedy the situation but he found it was properly closed. We drove the entire trip home watching the hood violently undulate. (I kept thinking the hood was going to snap off). I called the dealership where our salesman tried to make light of it and said there are no recalls for it-- "yet". I'm sick about it because it seems to be a wonderful vehicle in all other areas--smooth shifting--comfortable seating--bright LED headamps---generous warranty--and it would be a great driving experience if we weren't totally distracted by a dancing front hood. I will now be wary about driving it on windy days (which would be almost every day here in Northern Arizona). Since Mitsubishi Motors took four years to come out with this totally redesigned model I don't understand how something like this could slip through their fingers. Don't they test in wind tunnels? Our only hope is for a quick recall.

Loved the car...until I had a problem

I bought the 2022 Outlander SEL Touring. Everything about it was great - interior design, comfort, smooth ride, nice pickup for a small SUV. But then a wheel baring cracked. I started hearing a "clicking" noise every time I turned the steering wheel. Now it is sitting in my local service department waiting on a part that won't come in until end of January 2022 (the writing of this review is November 2021). Very disappointed that a brand new car would already have problems.

don not buy not reliable

outlander 2022 recalls & issues Hood problem wireless charger screen going gray seatbelt issue gets stuck fuel pump remote start does not work properly is time consuming and very aggravating having to deal with this many issues + whatever the future brings on a new vehicle and ofcurse the dealer gives you the runaround trying to blame it on anything and not assuming responsibility they already got their money so they dont care any more. on a positive note you can only make the MISTAKE of buying a Mitsubishi vehicle one time. not only will I not recommend buying this brand but I will express my opinion and experience with it.

Beautiful SUV but a mechanical nightmare!

I purchased a brand-new Mitsubishi Montero in 1995 and drove this SUV for 10 years without a single mechanical issue, it ran strong and was a beast in bad weather. So, when Mitsubishi came out with the Outlander, I was ecstatic that Mitsubishi was coming back on the scene with this well-designed SUV that reminded me of a Land Rover. With this in mind, I decided to go for it and purchased the diamond black SEL, S-AWC Launch edition. When I test drove one, I did notice the hood flutter and informed the salesman, in which, I was told, that it would need a minor adjustment, which made no sense to me on a brand-new vehicle that took 5 years to launch and tested for quality control throughout the engineering process to assess the quality and performance of the vehicle. The idea behind testing these cars is to allow manufacturers to work out all the kinks and potential problems before going into full production. Therefore, I purchased the SUV in December 2021, I did experience the hood fluttering, but having a mechanical background, I looked under the hood to see what adjustments these engineers failed to make and saw that there are 2 black rubber hood stoppers on the left and right side on the bottom, where the hood indentation makes contact with them when the hood is closed. I screwed the rubber pieces all the way out, and reinserted them, twisting them one full turn until the arrow faces in the direction of the engine. Then I took 2 felt pads, the pads you put under chair legs to keep them from scratching the floor and placed the sticky side down on the rubber stoppers. Closed the hood and went for a ride and the hood stopped the vibration and fluttering. However, on really windy days there is very little fluttering enough for me to feel comfortable driving and not worrying about the hood dislodging. If the hood doesn't close securely, adjust the rubber stoppers so the hood can close. Now, the next issue, I went for a drive and got half a mile from my home and the Outlander without warning just shut off. I pulled to the side and tried to start it to the point of the battery losing voltage. I had towed back to my home where I have the testing equipment and diagnostic tools to see why this SUV with 8000 miles just died on me. With the help of my son who is a professional mechanic, we determined it was the fuel pump shorted out based on the computer code. The next day I towed it to the dealer, wrote down all the symptoms that appeared after it shut off and thinking this would be a simple fix taking a few days, but that turned into 3 months without this vehicle, and it was the fuel pump, which was on back order and the fuel gauge. I had to get forceful with the dealer and made them get a Mitsubishi rep involved just to get a rental. After finding out that the robots that installed the fuel pumps didn't do it correctly and didn't get the wiring right which shorted the pump is what caused what could have been a serious accident if this occurred on the highway in traffic putting me and my family in harm's way. Therefore, I precede to take legal action against Mitsubishi, and now have a pending lawsuit against them. I used the Lemon law of my state and if the dealer is giving you the run around, you can file a complaint with the State Attorney General, they could be fined, and have their franchise license revoked, or you file a complaint against the dealer's surety bond with DMV Business regulation section or the licensing board. Mitsubishi is jeopardizing the lives of thousands of their customers allowing this mechanical issue to go unsolved until a hood rips off while driving or being rear ended when the fuel pump fails in traffic. I'm very disappointed in such a promising SUV, buyer beware!!

3 months and won't start!!!!

We've had the vehicle 3 months. It had 3300 miles when we got it. It's the Launch Edition, and we really like it. We had a 2018 Outlander phev, but it was really uncomfortable! We traded it in, and things were fine until yesterday. My husband got in it to go to work, and it won't start. We called Roadside Assistance, and we waited 5 hours before the tow company asked to come in the morning. It was 12:30 am, so it was fine. The Roadside Assistance hung up on me many times. The tow truck couldn't get it started. We had to contact Roadside Assistance again to tow it. They finally got it to the dealership. The dealership says it's the battery, but the tow guy didn't think so. It still wouldn't start even attached to another vehicle with jump cables and a battery charger. It just clicked. Mitsubishi released a vehicle with a vibrating hood that doesn't have any parts (batteries, filters, floor mats, etc). They're going to try a different vehicle's battery. They have yet to offer a rental or loaner or anything else. Our brand new vehicle doesn't work, and no one can be bothered to call us or be helpful. I pray it's just the battery, but I seriously doubt it. Now, we are not going to feel comfortable with the vehicle because we'll be worried it will continue. I tried contacting Mitsubishi, but they haven't responded at all. It's obvious they stopped giving a crap when they got paid. The dealership acted like we were crazy when I called them telling them it was dead, and they tried blaming us for leaving it on or causing the problem. This is our second Mitsubishi, and depending on whether or not they take care of the problem potentially our last.

Mitsubishi Outlander

What's new for 2024.

Mitsubishi doesn't throw any remarkable updates or changes at the Outlander for 2024, but a top-spec Platinum Edition model for both the nonhybrid and plug-in hybrid models have been added to the lineup. They come with special Black Diamond exterior paint with a contrasting roof painted in Alloy Silver. Inside, the Platinum Edition wears light gray upholstery and silver trim around the gauges. Rumors about a possible 286-hp Ralliart performance version of the Outlander PHEV could make for quite the spicy option, although Mitsu hasn't confirmed that model just yet. A two-year complimentary scheduled maintenance plan is now standard on all Mitsubishi models.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander starts at $30,075 and goes up to $52,055 depending on the trim and options.

The Outlander's starting price puts it on the more expensive side of the compact crossover segment. We'd recommend the mid-level SE model. It comes with intricate 20-inch wheels, a 9.0-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay, a hands-free power liftgate, wireless charging, and driver assists such as adaptive cruise and lane-keeping assist. We'd also select the Tech package that adds a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a Bose audio system, and a panoramic sunroof.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Outlander's standard engine is a 2.5-liter inline-four-cylinder engine that makes 181 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. It pairs exclusively with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Front-wheel drive is the standard configuration, but all-wheel drive is optional. Although the Outlander's acceleration times are competitive with other compact crossovers (excluding speedsters such as the turbocharged Mazda CX-5 and Kia Sportage ), it feels less responsive and lazier at highway speeds, which is exacerbated by its gearless CVT. Otherwise, the Outlander drives with agility and composure. Its steering is nicely weighted, its body motions are controlled, and its ride is taut. We did notice a lack of isolation that allowed a lot of road noise to enter the cabin on all but the smoothest roads, and our test vehicle's large 20-inch wheels with limited sidewall cushioning didn't help the situation. The Outlander we drove also had a soft-feeling brake pedal, but the stoppers hauled the SUV down from 70 mph in a class-competitive 172 feet. The plug-in hybrid model is more powerful and it scampered to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds at our test track. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder is assisted by a pair of electric motors for a combined 248 horsepower and in our first test drive , we noted that the Outlander PHEV felt perkier, especially in urban driving.

Towing and Payload Capacity

Bigger SUVs or pickups are better suited for towing, but the Mitsubishi does have the ability to tow as much as 2000 pounds, should you need it.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

With a 20.0-kWh battery pack onboard, the Outlander PHEV is good for a claimed 38 miles of electric-only driving range per charge. That puts it slightly ahead of other PHEV versions of the Hyundai Tucson and the Ford Escape , but behind the Toyota RAV4 Prime, which beats the Outlander slightly with a 42-mile driving range. During our 75-mph highway fuel economy test, we recorded 24 miles of highway driving before the battery depleted. Unfortunately, the Outlander PHEV suffers from a fairly slow onboard charging system, which means charging at home will take roughly 6.5 hours if the battery is entirely dead. Luckily, a DC fast-charging system is optional, but it uses an outdated CHAdeMO charging port that may not be easy to find at fast charging stations in your area.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The all-wheel-drive Outlander earns an EPA-rated 24 mpg city and 30 highway. Front-wheel drive Outlanders see a marginal improvement of 24 city and 31 mpg on the highway. During our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route—part of our extensive testing regimen —the all-wheel-drive Mitsubishi's real-world result of 26 mpg fell short of its EPA estimate. The Outlander PHEV is rated for 25 mpg city and 27 mpg highway when running on gasoline, but by the government's yardstick, it's good for 64 MPGe combined when accounting for its electric driving range. For more information about the Outlander's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The new Outlander has significantly nicer cabin materials compared with its predecessor, which was marred by subpar plastics and chintzy trim pieces. Not only are the interior accents and surfaces of higher quality, but the design finally qualifies as modern. Likewise, there's an assortment of contemporary content that includes an available 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a head-up display. While passengers in the first two rows enjoy more hip room and legroom than in the last-gen Outlander, its third row has very limited legroom for adults. The only other compact crossover with seating for seven is the Volkswagen Tiguan , but, unlike the Outlander, its extra set of seats is limited to front-drive models. Cargo space also increases on the new Outlander, with 1 cubic foot added to the total volume behind the second and third rows.

Infotainment and Connectivity

On the infotainment front, the new Outlander offers either an 8.0- or 9.0-inch touchscreen, depending on the trim. Both units have standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but only the latter allows users to connect their iPhones wirelessly. Along with charging ports at the bottom of the center stack, the system features hard buttons and physical knobs for volume and tuning. Additional available infotainment features include a 10-speaker Bose audio system, wireless device charging, and access to the subscription-based Mitsubishi Connect app that provides remote services.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Available with driver-assistance technology that includes adaptive cruise control and a semi-autonomous drive mode, the 2023 Outlander boasts a compelling set of tech. For more information about the compact crossover's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Available forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mitsubishi provides one of the better limited and powertrain warranties versus other compact crossovers and SUVs. Although the company doesn't offer complimentary maintenance, its primary protection plans are just as long as those from Kia and Hyundai .

  • Limited warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers 10 years or 100,000 miles
  • Complimentary maintenance is covered for two years or 30,000 miles

I am tempted to describe the plot of "Outlander" as preposterous, but a movie about an alien spaceship crashing into a Viking fjord during the Iron Age is likely to be preposterous.
