Did you receive an offer from lse to do a phd here’s why you should accept it.

First of all, many congratulations for receiving an offer to enrol on a PhD programme at LSE! And while you consider what your next step should be, allow me to assure you why LSE is the right place for you to be for your doctoral studies.

There are many other services too that can either directly support you or can point you in the right direction to further support services across the School.

LSE’s central location, top rankings, diverse academic community, affiliation to the University of London are factors that provide several advantages to being a PhD student here.

To wrap this up, I’d like to briefly share my personal experience thus far. LSE was my first choice for the PhD programme ever since I decided on pursuing one because my department’s research output defined the kind of scholarship I aim to accomplish and my supervisors’ work closely resembled my research interests. At the beginning of the application process, these two reasons were my strongest motivators for applying. However, through the application process I came upon several more reasons that solidified my interest in studying at LSE. These included:

• a great deal of support from my programme manager which helped me contact my supervisors;
• excellent experience working with my supervisor on developing my research proposal;
• my interview discussion with the panel allowed me a glimpse into the remarkable research culture at LSE.

So, when I received my offer, I knew I would accept it and it’s a choice I’ve been proud of. Since I’ve started my PhD, I’ve been working with some brilliant minds in Psychological Science and my work is informed by top experts. The experience has gone above and beyond my expectations in terms of the intellectual challenge it offers and how energised I feel engaging with the community. The PhD experience has already proved to be life-transforming and I feel it already. The best part, I’ve only just begun.

LSE PhD Studentships

It was a huge honour to receive funding from such a prestigious institution

For 2024 entry, LSE will be offering studentships to new PhD students, in 2023 this was 88, in the form of LSE PhD Studentships, LSE DTP  ESRC Studentships  and London Arts and Humanities Partnership (LAHP)  Studentships.

The awards are open to high calibre students of all nationalities studying across all research areas at the School.

Eligibility

LSE PhD Studentships are tenable for four years and cover full fees and an annual stipend, which for 2024 entry is £21,237. They are available for UK and international students undertaking research in any LSE discipline, with annual renewal subject to satisfactory academic performance.

These awards will be made solely on the basis of outstanding academic merit and research potential. This relates both to your past academic record and to an assessment of your likely aptitude to complete a PhD in your chosen topic in the time allocated.

How to apply

Academic departments nominate students for consideration by a School panel for all PhD funding opportunities they may be eligible for. There is no separate application for any of these studentships.

To be considered for this funding, you must submit your complete application for admission to LSE by a specific date. This date differs by academic department. Refer to the individual programme page for the relevant deadline information.  Find your graduate programme .

• deadline for the research programme in the Law School for 2024 entry: 1 December 2023
• deadline for the research programme in the Department of Economics for 2024 entry (including PhD Studentships and ESRC funding: 14 December 2023
• funding deadline for first round of PhD Studentships and for ESRC funding for 2024 entry: 15 January 2024
• London Arts and Humanities Partnership (LAHP) PhD Scholarships  deadline: 26 January 2024, 17:00 GMT
• funding deadline for second round of PhD Studentships deadline for 2024 entry (some departments only): 25 April 2024

• New Paper: Foundations for Knowledge-Based Decision Theories

LSE Philosophy PhD student Ze’ev Goldschmidt has published his new paper ‘Foundations for Knowledge-Based Decision Theories’ in the Australasian Journal of Philosophy.

Abstract: Several philosophers have proposed Knowledge-Based Decision Theories (KDTs)—theories that require agents to maximize expected utility as yielded by utility and probability functions that depend on the agent’s knowledge. Proponents of KDTs argue that such theories are motivated by Knowledge-Reasons norms that require agents to act only on reasons that they know. However, no formal derivation of KDTs from Knowledge-Reasons norms has been suggested, and it is not clear how such norms justify the particular ways in which KDTs relate knowledge and rational action. In this paper, I suggest a new axiomatic method for justifying KDTs and providing them with stronger normative foundations. I argue that such theories may be derived from constraints on the relation between knowledge and preference, and that these constraints may be evaluated relative to intuitions regarding practical reasoning. To demonstrate this, I offer a representation theorem for a KDT proposed by Hawthorne and Stanley (2008) and briefly evaluate it through its underlying axioms.
