The Prefix 'sub-' Worksheet is an educational resource that helps students understand and apply the prefix 'sub-' to various words, enhancing their vocabulary and comprehension skills. The worksheet provides a list of words beginning with 'sub-', such as 'subordinate', 'subtext', 'subservient', 'submarine', 'submerge', 'subdued', 'subterranean', and 'submissive'. Each word is paired with its definition, for instance, 'subordinate' means less important or lower in rank, while 'subtext' refers to a theme in a text that might not be immediately obvious. Students are tasked with drawing lines to match each word to its correct definition, reinforcing their understanding of the words and the prefix 'sub-'.
In addition to matching words with definitions, the worksheet includes fill-in-the-blank sentences that require students to select the appropriate 'sub-' word to complete each statement. For example, they might need to choose 'subdued' to describe someone who is quiet and reflective after an argument, or 'submarine' to refer to a warship that operates underwater. This exercise not only tests students' knowledge of the words but also their ability to use them in context. Furthermore, students are encouraged to write their own sentences using each 'sub-' word, which aids in solidifying their grasp of the vocabulary and its practical application in written English.
Lots of these sheets will require you to use skills from other years e.g. punctuating direct speech (Y3/4). It is important to keep revisiting these so you don't forget!
