“Interpreting Cohort Profiles of Lifecycle Earnings Volatility”

Presented by christopher bollinger and charles hokayem, april 24th @ 1:00 pm et.

Abstract : We present new estimates of earnings volatility over time and the lifecycle for men and women by race and human capital. Using a long panel of restricted-access administrative Social Security earnings linked to the Current Population Survey, we estimate volatility with both transparent summary measures, as well as decompositions into permanent and transitory components. From the late 1970s to the mid 1990s there is a strong negative trend in earnings volatility for both men and women. We show this is driven by a reduction in transitory variance. Starting in the mid 1990s there is relative stability in trends of male earnings volatility because of an increase in the variance of permanent shocks, especially among workers without a college education, and a more attenuated trend decline among women. Cohort analyses indicate a strong U-shape pattern of volatility over the working life, which comes from large permanent shocks early and later in the lifecycle. However, this U-shape shifted downward and leftward in more recent cohorts, the latter from the fanning out of lifecycle transitory volatility in younger cohorts. These patterns are more pronounced among White men and women compared to Black workers.

Scottie Scheffler wins 2024 Masters for his second green jacket

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA - APRIL 14: Scottie Scheffler of the United States celebrates on the 18th green after winning the 2024 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 14, 2024 in Augusta, Georgia. (Photo by Andrew Redington/Getty Images)

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Scottie Scheffler has been stating his claim as the No. 1 player in the world for three years. Sunday, Scheffler declared himself the dominant force of his era.

Scheffler, 27, won the Masters by four strokes over a star-studded leaderboard for his second green jacket in three years. He becomes the fourth-youngest golfer to win the Masters twice, following Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros and Tiger Woods. He joins Nicklaus and Woods as the only three players with two Players Championship wins and two green jackets.

For some time on a picture-perfect Sunday afternoon at Augusta National, it appeared an all-time race for the Masters championship was coming into form. The four men playing in the last two groups — Scheffler, Collin Morikawa, Max Homa and Ludvig Åberg — were all tied at 6-under at one point on the front nine.

But then Scheffler, who shot a final-round 68, put his foot down, and everyone else got out of the way.

As he stood in the fairway on the ninth hole, Scheffler unfurled a shot so good it’ll have a chance to become part of Masters lore — hitting it just high of the flag stick from 89 yards away and watching it spin back to six inches. A foot away from the hole, it looked like it was rolling in for eagle, patrons leaping out of their chairs in anticipation. He “settled” for birdie and took the lead at 8-under.

Scheffler then birdied the par-4 10th, a hole he had double-bogeyed on Saturday, to get to a two-stroke lead over Homa and Åberg.

Morikawa, playing with Scheffler, was the first to drop from contention. He doubled-bogey the 9th hole, parred the 10th and then put his second shot in the water on No. 11, venting his frustration as he watched the Masters slip from his grasp with a second double bogey.

Åberg was next, also finding the water on Augusta National’s treacherous 11th hole and scoring a double bogey to drop four shots behind Scheffler.

Last was Homa, still within reach of Scheffler until his tee shot on the par-3 12th flew the green, took a nasty bounce into the greenery on the hill behind it, and forced Homa to take an unplayable lie penalty. He had a double bogey after a poor chip, and was three shots behind even after Scheffler’s bogey on No. 11, his second of the day.

From there it became clear there could only be one, Scheffler adding birdies on holes Nos. 13, 14 and 16 to keep the rest of the field hopelessly chasing. Åberg finished second (7-under) in his first Masters appearance, followed by Morikawa, Homa and Tommy Fleetwood (tied at 4-under).

presentation about the us

Two years ago, Scottie Scheffler held a three-stroke lead the morning of the Masters and broke down in his wife Meredith’s arms, confiding in her that he did not feel ready for what was about to come. He was. He is, even though he did not have Meredith with him this week , as she stayed behind at their home in Dallas to await the birth of their first child. Scheffler had promised to withdraw from the tournament should she go into labor (she’s due later this month). It wasn’t necessary. Nothing was stopping him from this Masters win.

go-deeper

How the ‘Scottie Shuffle’ is Scheffler’s unique weapon as he seeks a second Masters

He now has nine PGA Tour wins with two majors, compiling a resume of excellence unmatched this decade. Those nine wins include two Masters, two Players Championships, two Arnold Palmers Invitationals, two Phoenix Opens and a WGC match play win. But maybe more telling has been Scheffler’s unprecedented consistency. He’s played 15 majors as a tour player, and he’s been top 25 in all but one. He’s been top 10 in 10 of them. The last time he finished a professional tournament outside the top 31 was in October 2022.

Scheffler’s been world No. 1 for 83 of the last 107 weeks, and his win Sunday further solidifies the belief that nobody is reaching him any time soon. The only question left for Scheffler was if he could stabilize his putting to ensure he added more majors and had a trophy room to match his special level. Now, he’s on a four-event run of winning the Players, the Arnold Palmer and the Masters as a 4-to-1 favorite.

Suddenly, the question is not whether Scheffler can truly operate like golf’s biggest star. It’s if anyone can stop him.

It’s one that questions received conventions about what female athletes do — or don’t — have to wear to perform at their very best.

It has touched women’s soccer (why white shorts?), gymnastics (why not a unitard rather than a leotard?), field hockey (why a low-cut tank top?) and many more, including running.

So it probably should not have come as a shock to Nike that when it offered a sneak peek of the Team U.S.A. track and field unies during a Nike Air event in Paris celebrating its Air technology on Thursday (which also included looks for other Olympic athletes, like Kenya’s track and field team, France’s basketball team and Korea’s break dancing delegation), they were met with some less-than-enthusiastic reactions.

See, the two uniforms Nike chose to single out on the mannequins included a men’s compression tank top and mid-thigh-length compression shorts and a woman’s bodysuit, cut notably high on the hip. It looked sort of like a sporty version of a 1980s workout leotard. As it was displayed, the bodysuit seemed as if it would demand some complicated intimate grooming.

Citius Mag , which focuses on running news, posted a photo of the uniforms on Instagram, and many of its followers were not amused.

“What man designed the woman’s cut?” wrote one.

“I hope U.S.A.T.F. is paying for the bikini waxes,” wrote another. So went most of the more than 1,900 comments.

The running comedian Laura Green posted an Instagram reel in which she pretended to be trying on the look (“We’re feeling pretty, um, breezy,” she said) and checking out the rest of the athlete’s kit bag, which turned out to include hair spray, lip gloss and a “hysterectomy kit,” so the women would not have to worry about periods.

When asked, Nike did not address the brouhaha directly, but according to John Hoke, the chief innovation officer, the woman’s bodysuit and the man’s shorts and top are only two of the options Nike will have for its Olympic runners. There are “nearly 50 unique pieces across men’s and women’s and a dozen competition styles fine-tuned for specific events,” Mr. Hoke said.

Women will be able to opt for compression shorts, a crop top or tank and a bodysuit with shorts rather than bikini bottoms. The full slate of looks was not on hand in Paris but more will be revealed next week at the U.S. Olympic Committee media summit in New York. The Paris reveal was meant to be a teaser.

Mr. Hoke also pointed out that Nike consults with a large number of athletes at every stage of the uniform design. Its track and field roster includes Sha’Carri Richardson, who happened to be wearing the compression shorts during the Paris presentation, and Athing Mu. And there are certainly runners who like the high-cut brief. (The British Olympic sprinter Dina Asher-Smith , another Nike athlete, told The New York Times last summer that while she opts to run in briefs, she also leans toward a leotard style, rather than a two-piece.)

What Nike missed, however, was that in choosing those two looks as the primary preview for Team U.S.A., rather than, say, the matching shorts and tanks that will be also available, it shored up a longstanding inequity in sports — one that puts the body of a female athlete on display in a way it does not for the male athlete.

“Why are we presenting this sexualized outfit as the standard of excellence?” said Lauren Fleshman, a U.S. national champion distance runner and the author of “Good for a Girl.” “In part because we think that’s what nets us the most financial gain from sponsors or NIL opportunities, most of which are handed out by powerful men or people looking at it through a male gaze. But women are breaking records with ratings in sports where you don’t have to wear essentially a bathing suit to perform.”

The problem such imagery creates is twofold. When Nike chose to reveal the high-cut bodysuit as the first Olympics outfit, purposefully or not, the implication for anyone watching is that “this is what excellence looks like,” Ms. Fleshman said.

That perception filters down to young athletes and becomes the model girls think they have to adopt, often at a developmental stage when their relationships with their bodies are particularly fraught.

And more broadly, given the current political debate around adjudicating women’s bodies, it reinforces the idea that they are public property.

Still, Ms. Fleshman said, “I’m glad Nike put this image out as the crown jewel of Olympic Team design,” because it may act as the catalyst for another conversation that has been long overdue.

“If you showed this outfit to someone from the W.N.B.A. or women’s soccer, they would laugh in your face,” she said. “We shouldn’t have to normalize it for track and field anymore. Time’s up on that.”

Aim: • Identify the main branches of the federal government and the part that they play in the US government. Success Criteria: • Identify the three main branches of government. • Explain the terms ‘ separation of power’ and ‘checks and balances’ • Describe the four main roles of the President.

The Constitution • The USA has a written constitution which was signed in 1789 – a set of rules which describes the way the government will work. • The American constitution tries to make sure no part of the government becomes too powerful. This is known as the ‘Separation of Powers’.

In 1791 the first amendments were made to the constitution. This was known as the Bill of Rights and was intended to protect people’s freedoms and rights. • 1st Amendment: freedom of religion, speech and the press, the right to peaceful assembly. • 2nd Amendment: the right keep and bear arms • 13th Amendment : abolished slavery (1865) • 18th Amendment: prohibited manufacture or sale of alcohol (1917 repealed in 1933)

The US Government • The job of government is split been federal and state government. • This is an example of the ‘separation of powers’. • Federal laws apply to the whole country but each state can pass its own laws in certain areas. • In the early days of the US nation this kept the states united but also gave each state some independence.

Federal Government There is one Federal Government based in Washington DC. It has: • President • Congress – made up of a Senate and a House of Representatives. • Supreme Court

US Federal Government Congress President Supreme Court Separation of Powers Power is shared equally between all three branches of government. Checks and Balances No single branch can impose its will Senate House of Representatives

The President Chief Legislator Proposes new laws or legislation to Congress. Can refuse to sign a bill – Presidential Veto. Congress can override the veto with a two-thirds majority. Commander-in-Chief Of the Armed Forces Head of national security. Commander of US military forces But only Congress has the power to declare war.

Chief Executive Responsible for the running of the government. Appoints people to key positions. Upholds decisions of Supreme Court. Head of State Chief public representative of the USA. Meets with other world leaders and negotiates treaties – have to be approved by Congress.

Congress • Senate • Two senators for each state - 100. • Elected for 6 years. • More concerned with foreign affairs • House of Representatives • Bigger states have more representatives – 435 in total • Elected for 2 years • More concerned with domestic (home) affairs.

Key Powers of Congress The President must have the approval of Congress To pass the Government budget (government spending) To pass a new law To declare war

The Supreme Court Highest court in America. Role is to uphold the constitution - new laws must be in agreement with the key ideas in the constitution. Nine Supreme Court judges in total. They are appointed for life.

The Supreme Court Supreme Court judges are appointed by the President and approved by Congress. Obama has appointed two Supreme Court judges – both of them are female. Some people argue that this was to make the court more representative of the US population.

In 2010 President Obama, managed to get a new healthcare law through Congress, which said that all Americans had to have health insurance. Many people did not like this and argued the government was interfering in people’s lives. The issue was referred to the Supreme Court and in 2012 they ruled 5-4 in favour of President Obama’s reforms. This shows that the Supreme Court still has a key role to play in US politics.

Federal and State Government Aim: Identify the main powers of the state and federal government. Success Criteria: By the end of the period you will be able to name three powers which the state and federal government have.

Federal Government There is one Federal Government based in Washington DC. It has: President Congress – made up of a Senate and a House of Representatives. Supreme Court

State Government • There are fifty state governments – one for each state. • Each state has a state flag. • Each state has a State Governor to run the state

Federal Government *Armed forces *US Economy *Economy *Foreign Relations *Postal Service Rick Scott State Governor of Florida State Government *Education *Gun Ownership *Local taxes *Capital Punishment *Age of consent The Supreme Court will make sure that both areas of government only make laws for the areas which they are responsible for

Task: Using the information on page 14 of your World Power textbook draw a diagram which shows: • The main powers of the state governments. • The main powers of the federal government.

Finally…How Does This Compare to the UK? • Remember we have a National Government in the UK Parliament which is headed by the Prime Minister • The Scottish Parliament like the US states can make laws about certain areas. • We do not have a written constitution, but we do have laws and rules which remind us how our government is run and organised.
