It may not be the flashiest small crossover, but the 2022 bmw x1 is a solid choice with great power..

What kind of vehicle is the 2022 BMW X1? What does it compare to?

The BMW X1 is the smallest crossover SUV in the German automaker’s lineup. Shop it against the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, the Audi Q3, and the Volvo XC40.

Is the 2022 BMW X1 a good car/SUV?

It may not be the most expressive small SUV—that’s where the related X2 takes over—but the X1 does most things right and thus scores 6.2 out of 10 on the TCC scale. (Read more about how we rate cars .)

What's new for the 2022 BMW X1?

This year’s X1 is basically last year’s X1, so don’t look for any notable changes. The X1 comes in front- and all-wheel-drive configurations with a turbocharged 4-cylinder linked to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. With shrunken X3 looks, the X1 breaks little new ground inside and out, but it has pleasing, if conservative lines and a convenient dash.

Handling isn’t traditional for BMW since power primarily goes forward, but the X1 handles routine driving well and can be fun enough on a winding road. Its ride can be on the stiff side, though.

Interior space is decent for front-seat passengers, but those in the rear may complain about limited leg room.

Offsetting good crash-test scores is the costly feature walk one must hike through to add adaptive cruise control, something that’s standard on a Toyota RAV4 that costs $10,000 less.

How much does the 2022 BMW X1 cost?

BMW wants $36,395 for a base X1, but you’ll pay extra for most amenities. Don’t look for an all-wheel-drive one on your dealer’s lot for much less than $40,000. With adaptive cruise control, leather seats, and a few other options, the X1 can top $45,000, so watch options pricing carefully.

Where is the 2022 BMW X1 made?

In Germany.

2022 BMW X1 Styling

Bmw didn’t use its most creative pen when drawing up the x1..

Is the BMW X1 a good-looking car?

Short on thrills, the BMW X1 has pleasant but unremarkable lines. It’s the least interesting car in BMW’s lineup, which explains its perfectly average 5 out of 10 score for styling.

There are some standard BMW cues, such as the twin kidney grille and something resembling a kink at the D pillar, but overall the X1 fails to excite. Optional M Sport guise butches the X1 up outside, but we can think of better ways to spend nearly $5,000.

It’s not much more interesting inside, with a dash that fits the BMW mold but is short on flair.

2022 BMW X1 Performance

The 2022 bmw x1 delivers spirited acceleration..

Is the BMW X1 4WD?

It can be. BMW charges around $2,000 for all-wheel drive, which changes this crossover’s name to xDrive28i.

How fast is the BMW X1?

BMW’s punchy, likable 2.0-liter turbo-4 is rated at 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque in the X1, where it works in concert with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Acceleration is strong and quiet. It earns a point above average here for the powertrain.

We’re less enthralled with the way the X1 rides in higher-end versions. The base 18-inch wheels give it a firm ride, while the optional 19-inchers are too much wheel and too little tire.

Steering heft is fine, but the X1 falls short of being genuinely fun. Spend nearly $5,000 on the M Sport package and you’ll get sharper moves, but at that price the more dynamically capable X3 is within reach.

2022 BMW X1 Comfort & Quality

The bmw x1 isn’t an especially roomy crossover suv..

Front-seat riders will find good room and cargo will be happy enough, but the BMW X1 is not a great choice for drivers who regularly use the back seat. We rate it 6 out of 10, the extra point garnered for cargo space.

While the front seats offer plenty of adjustment, the actual thrones themselves are flat and light on support. Rear-seat riders have 37 inches of leg room on paper, but the door openings are fairly tight and the bench itself is too narrow for three adults.

The X1 makes better use of its 27.1 cubic-foot cargo area, which expands to 58.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

It may be a BMW, but the X1 is light on soft-touch materials. Optional leather and wood elevate the atmosphere a bit. Is it luxury? One thing’s for sure: the badge is.

2022 BMW X1 Safety

The 2022 bmw x1 has earned good crash test scores so far..

How safe is the BMW X1?

The BMW X1 has done well in most crash tests, although the IIHS says its standard automatic emergency braking system doesn’t quite match up to rivals’ best equipment. In crash testing, the X1 earned “Good” scores in most of the IIHS’ categories.

Federal testers rate the X1 at five stars overall.

On our scale, the X1 rates a 7 out of 10, thanks to those NHTSA scores and standard automatic emergency braking. Outward vision is OK, and the X1 lacks some of BMW’s more advanced driver-assist features.

Used BMW X1 for sale near

2022 bmw x1 features, bmw stocks the x1 with lots of features, including good infotainment..

A base BMW X1 comes with power front seats, an 8.8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay compatibility, and basic crash-avoidance tech. Combined with its 4-year/50,000-mile warranty and a generous list of optional equipment, that’s enough to score 8 out of 10.

Which BMW X1 should I buy?

The base X1 runs about $36,395, but BMW charges extra for metallic paint, leather seats, a sunroof, and a host of other features.

We might build ours with seat heaters and all-wheel drive and call it a day, especially since the hoops BMW makes shoppers jump through to get adaptive cruise control up the price by around $6,000.

How much is a fully loaded BMW X1?

You could tick all the boxes and wind up with a $50,000 X1. We’re not saying you should, but you could.

2022 BMW X1 Fuel Economy

The 2022 bmw x1 gets decent fuel economy..

Is the BMW X1 good on gas?

It may require premium fuel, but the 2022 BMW X1 doesn’t have a big drinking problem.

With front-wheel drive, it’s rated at 24 mpg city, 33 highway, 27 combined. The all-wheel-drive version slips to 23/31/26 mpg, figures good enough to solidify its 5 out of 10 rating on the TCC scale.

New BMW X1 2022 review

The third generation bmw x1 suv offers more space, extra tech and a wide range of powertrains.

presentation bmw x1 2022

4.0 out of 5

carwow logo

The X1 is still some way from an involving driver’s BMW and this petrol powertrain isn’t without flaws, but the third-generation X1 does feel like another strong evolution towards being a more rounded, premium small SUV that’s still big enough to act as an everyday family car. We suspect the plug-in hybrids, with their excellent BiK rates, will prove very tempting options for company car choosers, too.

You certainly can’t accuse BMW of being short on persistence. Its original entry-level X1 was an ugly child when it made its debut, as neither a proper SUV nor a style-focused crossover , back in 2009. Many of the sharper corners were knocked off by the second generation, in 2015. And now the third generation is being offered with such a variety of powertrains that BMW must be hoping there’s one for every taste.

It’s a little bigger again too, this X1 – in length and wheelbase – but it sits on the same UKL2 platform as the old car (and the likes of the 1 Series and 2 Series Active Tourer ). This time, though, BMW is making use of the architecture’s adaptability and slotting a pure-electric variant, the iX1 , into the line-up, alongside a full range of combustion-engined models.

BMW iX1 - front tracking

The entry point in the UK is the rear-wheel-drive sDrive18d, featuring a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel motor producing 148bhp and 360Nm of torque. It’s claimed to deliver up to 58mpg and costs from £36,225 – a potentially useful £2,000-odd less than Mercedes ’ cheapest GLA diesel.

All of the other UK X1s are four-wheel drive, starting with the four-cylinder petrol xDrive23i (215bhp and 360Nm, with prices from ÂŁ42,080) and the more potent diesel, the xDrive23d (208bhp and 400Nm, from ÂŁ43,235). These options both get 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, with a 19bhp gearbox-integrated electric motor that can help with the stop/start functionality and allows engine-off coasting.

For those buyers who want to go further along the electrification path, but stop short of the iX1, there are also a couple of petrol-based plug-in hybrids: the xDrive25e, with 242bhp and 477Nm, and the xDrive30e, which has the same amount of torque, but 322bhp. Both of these cars have official pure-electric ranges of between 48 and 55 miles, which is enough to drop them into the eight-per cent Benefit-in-Kind rate for company car tax.

Here, though, we’re driving the xDrive23i edition, which is likely to be among the more popular choices for private buyers. It’s a model that doesn’t really have an obvious rival within Merc’s PHEV-heavy GLA range. Even Audi ’s more powerful petrol Q3 , the 40 TFSI Quattro, doesn’t get anywhere near the sort of output produced by BMW’s four-cylinder turbocharged engine.

Sure enough, the engine’s prodigious shove can make this X1 feel brisk. But how it delivers that performance is rather less satisfying. The motor produces its best work within a relatively narrow power band – and although the seven-speed automatic transmission generally does a decent job of keeping it in that comfort zone, when you do put in a request for additional performance, the set-up can be found wanting – not in ultimate delivery, but in the manner of it.

BMW X1 - rear

The dual-clutch gearbox just isn’t as smooth-shifting or as intelligent as BMW’s eight-speed automatics, and the engine has a fairly unappealing drone that can become a little thrashy at higher revs.

The management of the electric boost also doesn’t feel particularly well calibrated, so the system can feel like it’s constantly chasing its own tail. A sophisticated BMW long-distance cruiser it is not.

If anything, it’s easier to drive smoothly by putting the car in efficiency mode and committing yourself to the physical reality of softened throttle response. You’ll get a slightly more relaxed experience overall, even if economy doesn’t jump massively.

The chassis isn’t about to challenge BMW’s iconic rear-wheel-drive models for involvement, but the X1’s dynamics still feel like a standout offering in the class. There’s balance, poise and composure here at levels that the Audi Q3 could only dream of – and acceptable comfort.

However, it’s worth noting that all of the test models on offer at BMW’s launch event were fitted with M suspension with frequency-selective damping as well as a 15mm lower ride height.

While the steering is – sadly – numb, the response is crisp and there’s a pleasing amount of heft as you load the system up. BMW’s engineers have done a good job of dialling out transference of road imperfections, too. The overall experience remains rather anodyne – a digital car for a digital age, perhaps – but at least it also helps to deliver solid motorway refinement.

The engine and gearbox are much happier with life once you’re up to speed, so they fade away, and you’re well isolated from tyre roar beneath you. Only noticeable wind rush from around the side mirrors spoils the party, though it’ll be less of an issue at British motorway speeds than it was on the autobahns in Germany.

BMW X1 - dash

These dynamic traits are all evolutions of what’s gone before, in truth – as you might expect, given the continuity in the X1’s underpinnings. The real revolution comes in the cabin, where there’s an all-new fascia, improved materials, greater tech and even a little more space.

Ahead of the driver are a pair of screens, similar in their curved layout to those of the recently updated 3 Series and the flagship iX SUV, but smaller to reflect the X1’s more compact dimensions. Even so, the 10.25-inch digital instrument panel and the 10.7-inch infotainment screen feel bang up to date – helped by the latest BMW Operating System 8 software. The smaller cabin has persuaded BMW that you can easily reach the touchscreen, removing the need for the rotary iDrive controller; we’re less sure, but at least the screen’s responses are snappy.

The materials all feel solid enough, and there’s a satisfying mix of brushed-chrome surfaces and double stitching to help break up the padded plastics. As before, the overall impression is of a crossover rather than a full-blown SUV, so while the seating position is elevated, it’s only by a few centimetres overall.

The storage up front is a little odd – there’s a bizarre shallow tray in the armrest and then a large free area beneath it. But the smartphone wireless charging pad at the base of the dashboard, with a clip to secure the handset, is an interesting and potentially useful feature.

The latest growth spurt hasn’t gone to waste in the rear of the X1’s cabin, either. True, there’s a bit of a transmission tunnel hump that could annoy anyone sitting in the middle seat, but even with the panoramic roof, there’s decent headroom for six-footers, to accompany generous amounts of leg and kneeroom. The rear seats can slide fore and aft (except on PHEV models or the iX1), allowing you to prioritise cabin space or boot capacity.

The load bay itself is a decent shape, with multiple bag hooks on both sides, and there’s a variable-height floor so you can adjust for a flat load lip or maximum capacity. The rear seats fold in a 40:20:40 split, too, and if you drop them all, the boot size grows from 540 to 1,600 litres.

The UK range comprises five trim levels –  Sport Premier, xLine Premier, xLine Premier Pro, M Sport Premier and M Sport Premier Pro – but even the entry point gets the double-screen display, dual-zone climate control, parking assistant with a rear-view camera, LED headlights, a powered tailgate, a sports steering wheel and cruise control.

  • CAR drives the latest-generation X1
  • Curved screen tech, new engines and look
  • Is it still the sharp-steering baby SUV to buy?

BMW’s smallest SUV has been given a thorough going over. The new X1 has sprouted new screens and design inside, a fatter snout outside and a bigger list of things it boasts it can do well at. It’s now also available as a hybrid.

But this is one of the fiercest car segments out there, with the X1 having a tonne of rivals that also promise it can do be all the car you ever need. So where does the new BMW fit in?

But it looks like the last X1!

And you can criticise Mercedes for the same thing with a lot of its cars, too. But the redesign is bigger than you think, even if it takes you a little longer to notice the details. The headlights are angrier, the grille is (naturally) bigger, the trimmings are sharper and the rear lights are angular.

presentation bmw x1 2022

The X1 has also grown in size by quite a chunk, too. It’s 44mm taller, 53mm longer (with a 22mm increase in its wheelbase) and it’s 24mm wider. The boot is also 50 litres larger, making it bigger than a GLA, Audi Q3 and Jaguar E-Pace.

Biggest changes are inside, with an overhauled interior packed with way more technology. Not that you’d notice, as BMW’s designers have hidden most of it away on the curved screen system that’s now becoming commonplace in BMW’s range. It’s also a dashboard design devoid of an iDrive controller. Shock! But let’s remember that the latest 2-series Active Tourer did this first, and the argument is that the cockpit is tall and closer to you for you to just reach over and tap it instead.

presentation bmw x1 2022

Overall, it’s a pleasant place to be. Materials used are of good quality – nothing feels flimsy in here, and there’s a load of standard equipment. There are three trims in the UK: Sport, xLine and M Sport. Every X1 has LED headlights, a powered tailgate, live navigation via the BMW OS 8.0 system, climate control, reclining rear seats, adaptive cruise and a parking camera.

Fine – so far so good, how does it drive?

We’ve tried two versions of the X1 so far: the sDrive18d xLine and the xDrive23i M Sport. In BMW speak, that’s a front-wheel drive 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel in mid-spec trim (pictured in green) and an all-wheel drive 201bhp 2.0-litre petrol model in top spec (pictured in grey), sportier trim. There is a 23d option available as well as plug-in hybrid version that makes our list of the best diesel hybrids you can get. There’s also the iX1 electric model which we’ve driven separately here .

presentation bmw x1 2022

Interestingly, neither of the engines we’ve tried so far particularly bowled us over. The 18d variant is as you’d expect a commendable workhorse of an engine to be; usable amount of torque that spans the more relaxed end of the rev range, and if you push past that well of shove it gets thrashy and coarse. Unlike the 3-series we recently tried, it also seems apparent BMW’s bothered a tad less with soundproofing here. Still, though, it’s likely to be one of the most efficient engines bar the plug-in hybrids, and features mild hybrid tech that switches the engine off to coast.

Then at the other end of the scale is the 23i – arguably the sportiest powerplant you can get that doesn’t require a plug. It’s got quite a drone to it at you accelerate (which BMW tries to augment with its own ‘IconicSounds’ digital growl) but it certainly makes the X1 feel sprightlier this side of the overpowered iX1 EV.

Both engines we’ve tested are quiet at cruising speed, though, and are attached to a smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox; there’s no such thing as a manual X1. As for refinement elsewhere, tyre noise is impressively well-damped even over coarser tarmac, and the only real wind noise comes from a bit of bluster over the door mirrors.

presentation bmw x1 2022

It’s certainly sharper than the GLA and Audi Q3, that’s for sure. The steering is pretty numb but super direct in that very BMW kind of way, giving at least a superficial sense of the X1 being a small(ish) family crossover for those who are after a little handling sparkle.

The slight caveat is that we’ve only driven new models so far with the adaptive suspension option applied. During our test with those cars, body control is impressively well kept regardless of what drive mode you’re in (there is Personal, Sport and Efficient as standard) and the ride quality is impressive. But we need to try ones with standard suspension to really feel the difference.

BMW X1: verdict

BMW’s played it safe with its new X1, but managed to still make a premium family crossover worth recommending over some of its closest rivals. While the cost of entry is higher than an Audi Q3 or Mercedes GLA, the X1 offers more kit in a more premium feeling interior, more space and a sharper steer. It’s a well-rounded family car.

The X1’s sole engine is a 228-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front- and all-wheel-drive versions are offered, and competitors include the Audi Q3 , Volvo XC40 and Cadillac XT4 .

Bmw x1 2022: we know all the details in its presentation.

New BMW X1 2022

El 1 BMW X2022 is already here and in Actualidad Motor We have had the opportunity to meet personally all its details , During the static display which has taken place in Madrid.

La Third Generation of the BMW X1 arrives with a most imposing design , an arsenal of and engines for all tastes. In its repertoire there are diesel, gasoline, plug-in hybrid and 100% electric versions.

A BMW X1 bigger than it looks

All this in its compact size, although it is very close to the fuzzy limits of that category. Since BMW's misnamed "small SUV" grows 5 cm to reach 4,5 meters . Let us remember that the German brand does not have and has never had a small SUV. As can also be seen in the rest of its dimensions: 1,84 meters wide, 1,64 meters high and 2,69 meters of battle.

When removing the cover that covered the car during the presentation, the first thing that jumped out at the sight of those of us who were there was the bulky front end of the BMW X1 . An impression that is not clearly seen in the images of the model that already abound on the Internet and that make it look even bigger.

BMW X1 2022 M Sport

The hood has very little slope leaving a large nose , which even has some negative drop leaving the highest part forward . The double grill is also very large, although not as large as in other models, under which there is another extra air intake. Both of them have the shutter system that opens and closes the airflow depending on the need for cooling. Except, of course, the grill of the electric version that is blinded with shiny black plastics.

La bodywork of the 1 BMW X2022 is clearly more angular than the previous generation. This is especially appreciated on the sides with the ribs that run through the doors at the top and bottom. In addition to the heel cups with a sharp design.

Already in the rear stands out above all the spoiler with the lower central part , whose steps also have an abrupt angle. The same happens with the gate, which has a curious right angle that delimits the rear lights.

Lastly, they also draw attention to the bottom trims , which are silver as standard, black in the M Sport version and blue in the electric one. Although in the latter you can optionally put silver.

Inside the 1 BMW X2022

Inside, we can see how the 10,25” instrumentation and 10,7” central touch screen they are part of the same set, with a slightly curved finish to face slightly towards the driver. A characteristic detail of BMW cars, which usually divert the center console so that it is more at hand than the one who governs the vehicle.

Interior del BMW X1 2022

It also highlights a curious detail of the shift controls and other buttons such as the power on, the warning, etc. and they are integrated in the armrest floating center. A good solution that leaves them even closer to the driver and that allows space for storage compartments just below them.

The rear seats have a good space for occupants both in height and in legroom. Although the BMW X1 offers a option that allows the rear bench seat to be moved forward to gain a few liters in the trunk . There is still no data on how much you earn with this extra, but its capacity is 540 liters for the diesel and gasoline versions with front-wheel drive, 500 liters for the all-wheel drive and 490 liters for the electric version.

BMW X1 2022

A good electrical deal

In the case of plug-in hybrids Yes, it has two options, both with all-wheel drive. The xDrive 25th , which has 245 hp and 477 Nm of torque thanks to its three-cylinder gasoline engine (136 hp) and the electric motor (109 hp). It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6,8 seconds and reaches a more modest speed of 190 km/h. Its consumption is between 0,8 to 1,1 l / 100 km.

El xDrive 30th Instead, it has 326 hp and 477 Nm of torque, also with a three-cylinder engine (150 hp) and a 177 hp electric motor. With them it reaches 205 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5,7 seconds. Although its consumption is exactly the same as the xDrive 25e. all engines they only have the automatic 7-speed Steptronic, for the moment.

Finally, we have the BMW iX1 that is 100% electric with all-wheel drive, 313 hp and 494 Nm. Powered by a 64,7 kWh battery that gives it a range of between 413 km and 438 km depending on equipment. Its charging power is 130 kW in direct current and 22 kW in alternating current with Mode 2 and Mode 3 cables. Its acceleration is not yet known, but its maximum speed will be 180 km/h.

BaterĂas del BMW X1 2022
