1) Tweak Your Slides: Ten Design Principles for Educators (Version 3.0)

Learners often "buy e-learning" with their eyes and if they don't find it attractive it won't motivate them to learn. Good news is that by following some simple and practical design principles your eLearning screens can look great. Designing your material, then, has a lot to do with sticking to the essentials and arranging them properly.   We personally love how actionable tips are provided in this presentation.

2) 5 Reasons Typography is Powerful

Everybody knows that typography can be incredibly powerful. It can change the entire look and feel of your eLearning courses. It's use will set the mood and tone of your material.

What is the typography you’re using saying about your course? This presentation has some awesome takeaways about how to use some of the basic principles of typography not only to achieve readability but also to bring interest. Remember to call upon the 5 points when designing your eLearning courses.

3) 16 eLearning Quotes to Inspire You

For many, the simplest ideas in the form of a short quote can help them think more clearly. That's why we've curated a list of what we think are some of the best eLearning or education quotes. You'll find thoughts from people like Elliot Massie, Dr. Michael Allen, to historical figures like Henry Ford.

We hope you get the dosis of inspiration from these famous eLearning industry professionals:

4) Brain Rules for Presenters

The brain is our primary tool for learning. It's seat of thought, memory,  consciousness and emotion. So it only makes sense to explore it before attempting to design our eLearning courses. By understanding how the learner’s brain functions, course developers are better able to create material that works with the brain and not contradict it.

In 131 slides, Garr Reynols breaks down what he believes are the main takeaways and quotes from the book " Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School " . This is a must-see  presentation of how to do a brain-friendly, learning-maximised presentation or eLearning course.

5) Great Presentations Are Like Ads

Getting learners to focus on your material is difficult. Efficient course developers make focusing with the material easier by making it fun, attractive and engaging. Much like advertisements, effective eLearning designs manage to grab the learner's attention while piquing their curiosity for more information.

Just putting words on a screen sucks! Learners get easily bored when you bombard them with numbers, heavy paragraphs, and too much factual information. Avoid this by getting more creative and experimental. Apply the 3 R's of advertising to eLearning!

6) 5 Killer Ways to Open Up Your Next Presentation

Great beginnings of the best novels or TV series or whatnot never fail at making people curious. By working on a great course introduction, you’re tapping people’s innate capability of curiosity and giving them an opportunity to learn something new.  Begin with a story, an offer, or an interesting fact as if you are meeting someone for the first time. If your opening slides are good, learners will happily read your introductory material.

Without doubt, s uccessful eLearning courses that people complete from start to finish share one crucial element: a solid introduction. Below are some indispensable tips to creating one.

7) Introduction to Slide Design: 7 Rules for Creating Effective Slides

Design is too often overlooked by course developers, or otherwise misunderstood – some eLearning designers think that as long as their course "looks good," it's enough. But design affects the way a learner takes in information, so giving a bit more thought to the visual layout of the screens of your course is an important part of eLearning best practices. Follow these simple rules and see the difference they make.

8) How To Use Colors Wisely

"Color Matters. It always has, and it always will." Every shade and stroke of color, or the lack of it, creates its own message. Colors  are powerful in that they elicit emotions, latent ones included. That means that too many colors can overwhelm the learner, making it hard to focus on the course material.  So choosing them wisely can effectively deliver the emotional reaction you expect from your audience.

This Slideshare presentation gives us three valuable tips on how to use colors effectively in your presentations or eLearning courses:

9) 20 Eye-Opening Stats You Probably Didn't Know About Mobile Learning

Still not sure about implementing Mobile Learning? Consider these eye-opening statistics published by different organizations such as ASTD, iPass, Towards Maturity and Ambient Insight. Data from their most recent surveys reveal some interesting facts that you might be interested in.

SHIFT collected these facts about mobile learning to make the case for why everyone needs to take notice of the power of mobile in the learning industry.

10) Design for Usability

Jakob Nielsen defines usability as a "quality attribute that assesses how easy user interfaces are to use." Basically, its a necessary condition for survival. If your eLearning course or web site is difficult to use, people leave. Is that simple.

A course that provides learners with the right content it’s useful, but if it takes a lot of effort and thinking to actually find the content doesn't work.  It should be too obvious where to click, how to search and how to navigate so that users won’t waste time and get impatient. Definitely take a second to flip through the presentation, as you'll learn a great lesson.

Wraparound childcare: Everything you need to know about before and after school childcare

presentation on education slideshare

We’re supporting working families through the UK government’s biggest ever investment in childcare, to make it more affordable, available and flexible.

As part of this announcement, we’re expanding wraparound care for primary school children across England by increasing the number of places available, to support working families.

But what exactly is wraparound childcare? We explain everything you need to know, from what it is to how you can access it.

What is wraparound childcare?

Wraparound childcare is before and after school care for primary school aged children in England during term time, such as  and regular afterschool provision that runs until 6pm or later.

The childcare should be available every school day outside of regular  school  hours and is aimed at helping parents access more  childcare  and work the hours they want to.

This is different from out-of-school activities, or school clubs, which are less frequent and can be a one-off activity.

Around 60 percent of primary schools across England offer wraparound childcare, both before and after school.

Private, voluntary, and independent providers, including childminders and early years settings, are also able to offer wraparound childcare. Often, it’s run on a school site or another setting in the local area.

How do I find wraparound childcare near me?

Parents looking for  childcare options  for their primary school child should speak to their child’s school or the Family Information Service run by their local authority to find out what wraparound childcare is currently available in the area.

From September 2024, parents can expect to see an increase in the number of wraparound childcare places available across the country.

We expect all parents who need it to have access to wraparound childcare, either from their school or from another provider in their local area, by September 2026.

We encourage parents to talk to their child’s school or the Family Information Service in their local authority about their need for wraparound childcare, even if it’s not currently available.

Who will be eligible for wraparound childcare?

Our ambition is that all parents in England with primary school aged children will be able to access wraparound care in their local area by September 2026.

How much will it cost and is financial support available ?

Providers will set their own fees for wraparound places, so prices will vary.

Parents will pay their wraparound childcare provider directly for their child’s place.

Parents eligible for  Tax-Free Childcare  or  Universal Credit Childcare  will be able to use the support to help pay for wraparound care.

Tax-Free Childcare could save eligible parents up to £2,000 per year for children aged up to 11, or £4,000 per year for children aged up to 17 with disabilities.

Universal Credit Childcare could save eligible parents up to 85% of their childcare costs for children aged up to 16.

To check if you are eligible for Tax-Free Childcare or Universal Credit Childcare, visit the Childcare Choices website.

What if wraparound childcare is not available in my area ?

If you live in England you can request that your child’s school consider setting up wraparound childcare for your child if they don’t already provide it.

You should write to your child’s school by letter or e-mail and include when you most need wraparound childcare, detailing the days and times you need it. The school will get back to you with a decision within a school-term.

How are we supporting local authorities to deliver the wraparound childcare expansion?

To make more available wraparound care possible, local authorities will receive a share of £289 million to help map out and accommodate the needs of parents in their area.

They will also be able to use the funds to test different ways to increase their wraparound options, including working with local private providers or partnering with schools.

We’re also giving local authorities a share of a further £100 million to ensure childcare settings in the area – including both early years and wraparound settings – have enough physical space to roll out the programme from next year.

What else are we doing to improve access to childcare for under 5s for working parents ?

We’re doubling the amount we are investing in childcare over the next few years from around £4 billion to around £8 billion each year.

As part of this investment, by September 2025, working parents will be able to claim 30 hours childcare a week, over 38 weeks of the year, all the way through from nine months up to their child starting school.

Nurseries are also set to receive a £204 million cash boost which they can use to ease cost pressures such as staffing costs, training and bills.

Jada Wooten, "The Pedagogy, Practices, and Problems of Inclusive Arts Education in Out-of-School Settings" (Advisor: Andrea Flores)

My senior thesis explores the question: how do educators in precariously-funded out-of-school spaces design inclusive arts education for their public, which includes those with marginalized identities? To answer this question, I collected ethnographic data, including fieldnotes from participant observation and semi-structured interviews. I also draw from two frameworks in educational literature: inclusive arts pedagogies and the structural inequalities of educational spaces. My primary and secondary research has led to findings on the pedagogy, practices, and problems with inclusive arts education in out-of-school spaces. Firstly, by painting ethnographic portraits of an apprentice, seasoned, and master teaching artist, I reveal that, pedagogically, radical love is central to arts education that centers equity, participants’ needs, flexibility, and connections. Secondly, by considering a participant’s declaration that “Art is LIFE,” in light of ethnographic data and the literature, I point to how pedagogical practices centered in radical love foster expression, which is key to the definition of the arts; develop storytelling for healing and change; create opportunities for societal, physical, and emotional healing; build connections within and across communities; and advance social change in the field of education and beyond. Thirdly, I articulate participants’ experiences with non-profit jobs, grant funding, advocacy, community partnerships, and organizational structures to highlight the problems that impede access to the above practices and benefits of arts education. I conclude by considering the implications of the pedagogy, practice, and problems of arts organizations in the field of arts education learning, research, policy and advocacy, and community building.

Serena Levin, "The Privilege of the PTA: Middle-Class Latinx Parents' Perspectives on Parental Involvement Post-Uvalde" (Advisor: David Rangel)

The present study answers the following questions: post-COVID and in an era of mass shootings, how do middle-class Latinx parents understand the role of Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) within their middle-class Latinx schools, and how does that understanding impact their school-based involvement? The present research illuminates parents’ perceptions of the parent-teacher organization, the perceived benefits associated with participation, and the perceived accessibility of these groups in a post-COVID and post-Uvalde era of schooling. Utilizing 19 semi-structured interviews with middle-class Latinx parents in San Antonio, Texas, this study finds that the role of the PTA has expanded beyond typical PTA responsibilities in a post-Uvalde and pandemic context. According to participants, the PTA had jurisdiction over and privileged attendance to non-PTA events. PTA parents received privileged access to schools, capped events, and sign-up sheets, putting non-PTA members at a disadvantage. Parents had to be involved in the PTA to access their child's school. However, parents' racialized perceptions of the organization made the PTA feel inaccessible, associating the organization with white parenting practices, even when their socioeconomic class provided them with access to these groups. Therefore, the parents in this study who opted not to be involved in the PTA could not access the benefits of PTA involvement for their children. Thus, despite many parents’ desire to be involved in their children’s school, the perceived jurisdiction and inaccessibility of the PTA, a partial product of school safety measures, has made involvement less accessible for nonmember parents. The information from this study provides valuable insights into how schools should address perceived power structures and inequalities that school safety measures have exacerbated.

Sophie Forstner, "Excellence in Brown Athletics: Revised" (Advisor: Lindsay Page)

In 2020, Brown University transitioned several sports teams from varsity to club status in the “Excellence in Brown Athletics Initiative.” The initiative stripped the teams of their ability to recruit and provide preferential admissions for their athletes. The stated goal of these cuts was to increase competitiveness of Brown sports while keeping levels of diversity in athletics the same. This study compares the demographics of Brown  student athletes’ high schools, with and without the cut sports, to show the limited effects of the initiative on socioeconomic and racial diversity among Brown’s varsity athletes. By comparing the demographics of each team, I determine how Brown could have cut the same number of athletes while creating a greater, but not momentous shift in diversity. Next, I looked at how student and alumni opinions may have influenced Brown’s decision. The findings of this study suggest that transformative change in diversifying college admissions will not be driven by cutting select groups of varsity sports but rather by reforming the athletic recruitment process and the youth sports pipeline.

Governor Newsom Unveils Revised State Budget, Prioritizing Balanced Solutions for a Leaner, More Efficient Government

Published: May 10, 2024

The Budget Proposal — Covering Two Years — Cuts Spending, Makes Government Leaner, and Preserves Core Services Without New Taxes on Hardworking Californians

Watch Governor Newsom’s May Revise presentation here

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:  The Governor’s revised budget proposal closes both this year’s remaining $27.6 billion budget shortfall and next year’s projected $28.4 billion deficit while preserving many key services that Californians rely on — including education, housing, health care, and food assistance.

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today released a May Revision proposal for the 2024-25 fiscal year that ensures the budget is balanced over the next two fiscal years by tightening the state’s belt and stabilizing spending following the tumultuous COVID-19 pandemic, all while preserving key ongoing investments.

Under the Governor’s proposal, the state is projected to achieve a positive operating reserve balance not only in this budget year but also in the next. This “budget year, plus one” proposal is designed to bring longer-term stability to state finances without delay and create an operating surplus in the 2025-26 budget year.

In the years leading up to this May Revision, the Newsom Administration recognized the threats of an uncertain stock market and federal tax deadline delays – setting aside $38 billion in reserves that could be utilized for shortfalls. That has put California in a strong position to maintain fiscal stability.

“Even when revenues were booming, we were preparing for possible downturns by investing in reserves and paying down debts – that’s put us in a position to close budget gaps while protecting core services that Californians depend on. Without raising taxes on Californians, we’re delivering a balanced budget over two years that continues the progress we’ve fought so hard to achieve, from getting folks off the streets to addressing the climate crisis to keeping our communities safe.” – Governor Gavin Newsom

Below are the key takeaways from Governor Newsom’s proposed budget:

A BALANCED BUDGET OVER TWO YEARS.  The Governor is solving two years of budget problems in a single budget, tightening the state’s belt to get the budget back to normal after the tumultuous years of the COVID-19 pandemic. By addressing the shortfall for this budget year — and next year — the Governor is eliminating the 2024-25 deficit and eliminating a projected deficit for the 2025-26 budget year that is $27.6 billion (after taking an early budget action) and $28.4 billion respectively.

CUTTING SPENDING, MAKING GOVERNMENT LEANER.  Governor Newsom’s revised balanced state budget cuts one-time spending by $19.1 billion and ongoing spending by $13.7 billion through 2025-26. This includes a nearly 8% cut to state operations and a targeted elimination of 10,000 unfilled state positions, improving government efficiency and reducing non-essential spending — without raising taxes on individuals or proposing state worker furloughs. The budget makes California government more efficient, leaner, and modern — saving costs by streamlining procurement, cutting bureaucratic red tape, and reducing redundancies.

PRESERVING CORE SERVICES & SAFETY NETS.  The budget maintains service levels for key housing, food, health care, and other assistance programs that Californians rely on while addressing the deficit by pausing the expansion of certain programs and decreasing numerous recent one-time and ongoing investments.

NO NEW TAXES & MORE RAINY DAY SAVINGS.  Governor Newsom is balancing the budget by getting state spending under control — cutting costs, not proposing new taxes on hardworking Californians and small businesses — and reducing the reliance on the state’s “Rainy Day” reserves this year.

HOW WE GOT HERE:  California’s budget shortfall is rooted in two separate but related developments over the past two years.

  • First, the state’s revenue, heavily reliant on personal income taxes including capital gains, surged in 2021 due to a robust stock market but plummeted in 2022 following a market downturn. While the market bounced back by late 2023, the state continued to collect less tax revenue than projected in part due to something called “capital loss carryover,” which allows losses from previous years to reduce how much an individual is taxed.
  • Second, the IRS extended the tax filing deadline for most California taxpayers in 2023 following severe winter storms, delaying the revelation of reduced tax receipts. When these receipts were able to eventually be processed, they were 22% below expectations. Without the filing delay, the revenue drop would have been incorporated into last year’s budget and the shortfall this year would be significantly smaller.

CALIFORNIA’S ECONOMY REMAINS STRONG:  The Governor’s revised balanced budget sets the state up for continued economic success. California’s economy remains the 5th largest economy in the world and for the first time in years, the state’s population is increasing and tourism spending recently experienced a record high. California is #1 in the nation for new business starts , #1 for access to venture capital funding , and the #1 state for manufacturing , high-tech , and agriculture .
