To learn more about the national second collections please see the "National Collections" section below.

YOU SPOKE, WE LISTENED!

Look out for changes to our 2nd Collections.

Over the course of the next several years, we will begin to reduce the number of 2nd collections. Beginning in January 2024, some of the National collections will be combined, and some in-house 2nd collections will be reduced and/or eliminated.

Our same in-house ministries will still be supported, though instead of being funded through multiple 2nd collections, they will be supported through the 1st collection (general fund). Beginning in January, the following changes will be made to in-house collections.

  • Both Religious Education Ministries and Youth Ministry will be eliminated as a 2nd Collection.
  • Parish School Scholarship will be reduced from four collections to two.

All three are vital ministries and the deficit from the change will be covered through the 1st collection.

With this change, we are asking you to increase your 1st collection offering to ensure we are able to support these ministries. Your Catholic Generosity allows us to continue to evangelize. May God continue to bless you.

Nine of the national 2nd collections will be combined to have three separate 2nd collections, where you’ll have the option of selecting on the envelope, which of the funds your donation will go towards. Envelopes for these three will be available in the church and not mailed to you.

Sacrificial giving is an act of gratitude to the Lord and also brings us joy and peace! The Sunday 1st Collection envelopes are the focus of our regular sacrificial giving and are an essential aspect of our participation in the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross, which is what the Mass makes present.

Whether our sacrificial giving ends up being large or small in proportion to our income matters very little when considering the privilege it is simply to be generous and make a return of what God has given to us.

“The same spirit must be there, nonetheless: loving unselfishly, generous with ourselves, willing to spend ourselves for others, without reckoning the cost...” - Bishop Emeritus Eugene J. Gerber

Church in Latin America

For over 50 years, the Collection for the Church in Latin America has provided a way to join in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Latin America and the Caribbean. An example is that it helped translate the Catechism into the Mayan language Q’eqchi’.

In Mexico’s Diocese of Iztapalapa, much of the population lives below the poverty line and has trouble meeting basic needs. The crime rate is high. Offenders who complete their jail sentences face rejection and isolation and risk reoffending upon their return to society. With grant support from the Collection for the Church in Latin America, the diocese created the Cristo Redentor evangelization center, where persons released from prison can receive job search help, group therapy, spiritual direction, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. And they can participate in recreational activities such as theater, games, and music, all at no charge.

Black and Indian Missions

Mandated by the III Plenary Council in 1884, the 125-year-old National Collection for Black and Indian people continues as the embodiment of the Church’s concern for evangelizing the Black and Indian peoples of the United States. The funds are distributed as grants to dioceses throughout the United States, supporting and strengthening evangelization programs which otherwise would cease. The Collection was formerly known as The Black and Indian Home Mission Collection.

Catholic Relief Services

The Catholic Relief Services Collection supports Catholic Church organizations that carry out international relief and solidarity efforts. Programs include relief and resettlement for victims of persecution, war, and natural disasters; development projects to improve living conditions for the poor; legal and support services for poor immigrants; peace and reconciliation work for people suffering from violence; and advocacy on behalf of the powerless.

Contributions to The Catholic Relief Services Collection are distributed to these six organizations:

  • Catholic Relief Services for international relief and development.
  • Migration and Refugee Services for refugee resettlement.
  • Catholic Legal Immigration Network Inc. (CLINIC) for immigration legal services.
  • Department of Justice, Peace, and Human Development for advocacy.
  • Holy Father's Relief Fund for emergency relief.
  • Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church for evangelization and ministry.

Catholic Home Missions Appeal

Home mission dioceses across the country face similar challenges: small Catholic populations, great distances between parishes, and economic hardships that make it difficult for parishes to meet the pastoral needs of their communities.

What is a Home Mission Diocese? Home mission dioceses are those Catholic dioceses in the United States, its territories, and former territories that cannot provide basic pastoral services without outside help. Basic pastoral services include Mass, the sacraments, religious education, and ministry training for priests, deacons, religious sisters, and laypeople. Nearly 40% of dioceses in the United States and its territories are considered home missions.

Catholic Communications Campaign

Merchant mariners, ¬fishermen, port workers, and others working in the maritime industries have special pastoral needs to remain connected with their faith. For over a century, Apostleship of the Sea (AOS) has served merchant sailors around the world by providing sacraments and spiritual renewal through port chaplaincies, as well as hospitality, recreational opportunities, and communication with loved ones at home.

Where do your funds go? Half of the collected funds remain in your diocese to support local communications projects. The other half supports the collective communication work of the bishops of the United States as well as other national projects in the United States and around the world.

Collection For The Holy Father

The Peter’s Pence Collection enables the Holy Father to respond with emergency financial assistance to requests to aid the neediest throughout the world—those who suffer as a result of war, oppression, and natural disasters. It likewise provides the faithful with a tangible opportunity to not only empower the weak, defenseless, and voiceless, but also sustain those who suffer.

For more information on Peter’s Pence, please visit the Vatican’s Peter’s Pence website: www.obolodisanpietro.va/ en/cos-e-l-obolo.html (English) or www.obolodisanpietro.va/ es/cos-e-l-obolo.html (español). Support for such papal efforts is rooted in the scriptural message exhorting us to take care of the poor, and it expresses unity with the Holy Father in two ways: through the ongoing activities of the Holy See and through the charitable works of the Holy Father on behalf of those most in need.

Catholic University of America

Since 1903, the National Collection – the only nationwide second collection taken for higher education in the U.S. – has been a critical source of funding for Catholic University. Thanks to the collection, the University has been able to educate thousands of young minds in both faith and reason, while upholding the highest standards of education and conducting critical research to serve dioceses, parishes and pastors throughout our country.

presentation parish school stockton ca

Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD)

For more than 50 years, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has supported organizations that combat poverty and improve the lives of people in communities across the United States. Not only do CCHD-funded organizations advocate with civic, business, and community religious leaders to improve access to affordable housing, job and educational opportunities, and rights for immigrants—they also respond quickly to urgent needs when communities experience emergencies.

When you support CCHD, you help local communities across the country innovate and work together to solve their own unique challenges. Twenty-¬five percent of your contribution stays in your diocese to support the organizations addressing your community’s needs for housing, jobs, and educational opportunities—and for keeping the lights on during a storm.
