Your sales pitch can make or break the deal, so it‘s a good idea to have that nailed down before meeting with your customer. It’s your opening line, your verbal business card, and the first thing your customer will hear when you call or meet with them.

I've been in sales for almost 16 years and have heard my fair share of both great and less-than-stellar pitches.

For this post, I‘d like to discuss the anatomy of a good sales pitch and share examples of the best sales pitches I’ve ever heard.

A sales pitch is a condensed sales presentation where a salesperson explains the nature and benefits of their business, ideally in less than one or two minutes. Sales pitches are often referred to as ‘elevator pitches’ because they should be able to be delivered within the time constraints of a single elevator ride.

Salespeople are past the point of giving prospects hour-long presentations to sell products or services. Nobody has that kind of time and, to be honest, if you need an hour to relay your value proposition, you're doing it wrong. They're called elevator pitches for a reason. Ideally, if you're giving me one, I should be able to understand what you have to offer in the time it takes to get from the lobby to my floor.

A good salesperson should be able to get their message across compellingly and concisely. If you can nail your sales pitch, odds are you'll have more time to talk down the line.

What is a product pitch?

A product pitch is not much different than a sales pitch, but is specifically focused on a product or service. You'll go in-depth and emphasize how your product works, how it will solve their pain points, and the specific benefits it will bring to your customers.

As an example, a sales pitch can be broadly focused, like if you‘re a consulting firm that offers a wide range of services. You’re selling your business as a whole, rather than a specific product or service, like a CRM platform or accounting tool.

Starting a pitch is arguably the hardest part. You have to grab your prospect’s attention so that they actually want to hear the value of your product and how it can help their business. But before you can share the product’s value, you have to hook the prospect.

When starting your pitch, you’ll want to integrate the following essential elements.

  • Start with the problem. Always start with the problem. Unless they know the problem you can solve, they won’t be open to hearing how your product is a solution.
  • Tailor the start of the pitch to their vertical. No one wants to hear a general pitch that would apply to any business. Research their vertical and use the information you found to personalize the pitch immediately.
  • Offer stakes. If they don’t solve the problem using your solution, what do they have to lose? You don’t need to state it in such clear terms — but alluding to the risks at the start of your pitch can help you secure buy-in straightaway.

Here are a few methods for starting a product pitch, but remember: try to stick to thirty seconds, or one to two sentences if you’re delivering the pitch via email.

Start off with a personal anecdote.

Start off a pitch with what you know best — yourself. While I don’t think you should focus solely on yourself throughout your entire pitch, starting off with a personal anecdote can help you speak with more authenticity and foster empathy.

The key here isn’t to focus on the product’s merits. How many product pitches start off with “This product helped me achieve X results in X amount of time”? A lot. And I’m already yawning. And no one cares about results unless they know the problem first.

Your personal anecdote should focus on a problem that your product can solve. Make it as excruciating as you’d like — and don’t forget to be genuine and connect your anecdote to their business.

Ask a question that relates to the problem you solve.

Oh, yes, the good old question. While it might verge on overused, it’s not to be dismissed. Asking a question is a highly effective way to start a pitch. The question should, again, focus on the problem.

Stick to yes or no questions and tailor it specifically to the business you’re pitching to. If you’re speaking to a real estate business, create a question that articulates a problem specifically experienced by real estate firms. If you sell a property management software, it could be as simple as, “Do you spend way too much time tracking individual property sales? That’s time better spent actually showing homes to prospective buyers.”

Start with a stat that resonates and offers stakes.

Starting with a stat can be effective — but it has to resonate with the audience and offer stakes. In other words, what does the stat have to do with the problem? How does it reflect a potential and critical downfall that could harm your prospect?

Let’s say that you’re a salesman of yard maintenance services. Starting off with “50% of homes don’t use yard maintenance services” is a lazy and boring way to begin your pitch. Consider instead: “50% of homes don’t use yard maintenance services, resulting in thousands paid to HOA every year.”

Now that you know how to start your pitch, it’s time to deliver the rest of it. Use the following tips to secure buy-in in less than three minutes.

How to Make a Sales Pitch

  • Make it short.
  • Make it clear.
  • Explain who your customers are.
  • Explain the problem they're facing.
  • Explain how your product addresses their needs.
  • Describe what success will look like as a result of using your product.

1. Make it short.

A sales pitch isn‘t a conventional presentation. You’re not going to have PowerPoint slides. You‘re not going to have complimentary pastries on a boardroom table. And, most of all, you’re not going to have your audience‘s time and patience for long — at least not until they’re sold on your product.

2. Make it clear.

This ties in with the previous point. You don‘t have the time to go on tangents or talk about anything but the message you’re trying to get across. Your pitch has to be lean and to the point. It has to register with your listener immediately. That means speaking with intention and clarity.

If you’re pitching a product, you want to ensure that you clearly communicate how it will solve your prospects' pain points, giving them a clear picture of how their day-to-day will improve if they decide to make a purchase.

3. Explain who your customers are.

Consider the picture you‘re going to paint in your pitch. Give your listeners perspective on who’s buying your product or service. They want to know that you have a lucrative, engaged market in mind. Be specific in identifying who will be interested in your product, and try to convey why your listeners should be interested in them.

4. Explain the problem they're facing.

Cover why your customer base needs you. Your target market is only as valuable as the problems you can solve for them. Convey a problem they consistently face. If you‘re pitching a spreadsheet software for accountants with functionality Excel doesn’t have, you could discuss how hard it is to bookkeep without your software's unique features.

5. Explain how your product addresses their needs.

Here‘s where you start to bring it all home. You’ve established who you‘re selling to. You’ve established why you‘re selling to them. Now, you have to establish why they’d buy from you. What can you do better than your competition?

Robin Piree, filmmaker and creator of RobinPiree.com even notes, "Buyers are focused on their needs, and sellers are focused on the details of their offering. The goal of a successful pitch deck is to switch your focus from what you offer to how that meets your buyer's needs."

As mentioned above, you need to clearly explain how your product addresses their needs. Continuing with the accounting example, you could touch on how your unique data visualization features make busywork more efficient.

6. Describe what success what success with your product will look like.

Show the benefits of your product on a broader scale. In the example we‘ve been using, you can talk about how accountants that use your software have more time to spend with important clients or the flexibility to spend time with their families. Show how your product makes your customers’ lives better as a whole.

Ideally, your pitch should be a one-liner summarizing what your company does, how they do it, and for whom. And this is not just a requirement for sales reps. Anyone in your company, from the CEO to sales consultants, needs to know your one-line sales pitch by heart.

So, how should you structure your sales pitch?

If you have time to properly expand and work on a conversation, touch on points of interest. Here's a framework you can use for building your pitch:

  • Problem: Start with a statement or question about the problem you solve. You can present the problem using a personal anecdote, question, or eye-opening statistic. Answer the why.
  • Value Statement: Share a very clear, concise statement of value. Be action-oriented and outcome focused. Avoid using jargon. Share benefits.
  • How We Do It: Highlight unique differentiators and explain what you do.
  • Proof Points: Provide clear reference examples and list recognizable achievements. Share industry validation and awards.
  • Customer Stories: Share customer examples and successes. Tell emotional and personalized customer stories. Make it real and tangible.
  • Engaging Question: Close the pitch with an open-ended question, creating a space to have a conversation.

Many companies use success stories in their pitches to ensure the sale. Name-dropping really works, so be sure to use that to your advantage. And if your product is small or light enough to keep in your pocket, you should always have one on-hand to show your prospect.

I always stress the need for a concise sales pitch. So keep it free of professional jargon, don't get into the weeds, and be sure to talk more about your prospect and their problems than yourself.

Nothing‘s more off-putting than a bragging salesperson talking about themselves, their company, or their services. That’s what I call the “me monster.” The actor in your story is the customer, not you — period.

Distribution Matters

Lastly, presentation and distribution are everything. You need to deliver your sales pitch to the right person at the right time with the right tools on hand (like a demo, free trial, or presentation).

The sale starts with your list of contacts. Define your list and personas, know their correct contact information, get an introduction, and make sure you contact them at a time of day when they're likely to respond.

  • Tell a story.
  • Include a value proposition.
  • Personalize the sales pitch.
  • Switch up your pitch.
  • Practice your pitch.
  • Try not to use metaphors.
  • Create a WOW moment.
  • Appeal to emotions.
  • Back it up with facts.
  • Tap into their fear of missing out.
  • Educate them.

How can you make your sales pitch the best it can be? Here are some sales pitch ideas.

1. Tell a story.

Keep your listeners engaged by telling a brief story . The story could be either about the company or how a customer found success through your product or service. In this latter example, you can start with the issue the customer was facing, lead into the solution, and end with the key results the customer achieved.

If you think storytelling is difficult, don’t fret. Just think of your favorite movies and TV shows — how did they keep you engaged? Try to emulate the same tricks as you try storytelling during a sales pitch. Use images and interactive elements to enrich the experience for your listeners, keeping in mind who your audience is and what their preferences are.

For instance, if you’re selling enterprise-level software to senior-level executives, you might adjust your tone and delivery to be more formal and poised. The scrappy owner of a startup, however, might appreciate more humor and levity. Study your prospects to figure out the best storytelling method for them.

2. Include a value proposition.

What value will you provide for this person or their company? While your pitch should be short and sweet, the value proposition is the core of your sales pitch. To offer the greatest amount of impact, your value prop should come after you identify the problem that your prospect faces in their day-to-day. The value prop is the proposed solution and is the make-or-break moment of your pitch.

Create a value proposition canvas to guide the wording of your value prop. Remember that the gain creator and pain relievers connect directly to the customer gains and pain points. Leveraging these two sections of your canvas will help you create a pitch that directly speaks to your prospect and their needs.

3. Personalize the sales pitch.

Who are you talking to? Make sure your sales pitch is relevant to them and piques their interest. You‘ll be able to customize it so it addresses the items that are most important to the person you’re speaking with.

This idea applies to any pitching method or technique you use. No matter what, the sales pitch should speak to your prospect’s highly specific pain points and needs. For instance, if you’re pitching your bookkeeping software to the sole proprietor of a freelance business, you might emphasize the easy and simple invoicing tool.

For personalization to have the most impact, you must have had a productive discovery call where you asked questions that uncovered your prospect’s most urgent needs. Leverage the information you found out during that process to hone your pitch.

7. Social Sales Pitch

Social sales pitches are tailored messages delivered to prospective customers through social media platforms, like LinkedIn. This process is often referred to as social selling .

Unlike traditional sales pitches that can be more direct and transactional, a social sales pitch aims to establish relationships and build trust with prospects by delivering valuable and relevant content. The goal is to increase brand awareness and drive conversions by aligning your sales message with the interests and needs of your prospects.

  • It differentiates its product from others on the market.

9. Follow-Up Pitch

So, what do you do if your prospect doesn’t respond to your first pitch? You follow-up with them. A follow-up pitch gives you the opportunity to reignite the conversation, reinforce your value proposition, and address any questions or concerns your prospect might have.

Follow-up pitches can be delivered through a number of channels, but phone calls and email are the most common. Ultimately, the goal of a follow-up is to continue nurturing your relationship with the prospect and convert them into a customer.

That said, you’ll still need a solid track record or educational background to snag the interest of an employer. But with a sales cover letter in hand, your next job search will become that much easier, whether you’re an entry-level job seeker or you’ve cultivated a LinkedIn resume that turns heads.

Why is a Sales Cover Letter Important?

Cover letters tell your potential employer who you are before you even walk in the door for a sales job interview , and it makes said interview that much more likely. Even if writing such a letter feels uncomfortable and you’d prefer to let your experience do the talking, this is still an invaluable skill to have.

5 Cover Letter Tips for Today’s Sales Professionals

Writing a professional cover letter for a sales job might not feel intuitive yet, but that doesn’t mean it has to be hard. The following tips will start you off on the right foot.

Be Clear And Concise

A cover letter is not an aria. It’s not a soliloquy or a monologue. It’s certainly not a rant. No, you can think of it as a short informational pamphlet—and the subject is you.

Rather than waxing poetic about your thoughts, feelings, or even your goals, stick to the main points, including who you are, what you’ve done so far, and what you can do for the company for which you’d like to work. Keeping your letter short and sweet can increase application success.

Make it Easy to Read

Hiring managers go through hundreds of resumes at a time. The way you format your cover letter can either help or hurt your chances of standing out.

No, that doesn’t mean it’s time to throw in the fancy fonts and fun colors. Instead, format your cover letter with the goal of making it easy to read.

Follow best practices such as:

  • Write short, concise sentences and remove unnecessary adjectives
  • Make your paragraphs shorter, or use bullet points to make key ideas stand out
  • Use clean, professional fonts at a size that’s easy to read

The overall goal is for hiring managers to quickly and easily see what makes you stand out beyond the rest of the applicants. Don’t hide your strongest selling points in small, swirly fonts and huge blocks of text!

Highlight Your Skills

It’s very important to highlight your sales skills in a cover letter. This is different from accomplishments, which we’re covering next. Your skills are a separate category, in which you describe what you bring to the table, regardless of whether you’ve used those skills in the past or not. Include such details as the apps, sales tools or programs you know how to use, languages you speak, and areas in which you’ve trained.

While it is appropriate to include some reference to soft skills in your cover letter, limit it to a few. Any job applicant will claim they are a good problem-solver and a team player; it’s more important to share which skills make you stand out as a salesperson.

Showcase Relevant Achievements

In addition to putting your achievements on a professional resume , include a quick recap of them in your cover letter. Make those achievements quantifiable, using numbers and statistics from your sales reports or the company’s, and don’t hold back or engage in false modesty. This is no time to sell yourself short.

5 Steps To Writing A Sales Representative Cover Letter

So it’s time to write that letter and nail that sales representative position! But how exactly are you going to fit all the awesomeness that is you onto one page, single-spaced, in 12-point Helvetica font, without leaving anything out?

Good question, and as with all good answers, an analogy is called for: think of your cover letter as if it’s a highlight reel on your social media account. While your highlight reel can’t stand in for the hours you spend crafting witty tweets, it can give people a quick glance at who you are. And just like a highlight reel, the goal for your cover letter is to make others want to dig a little bit deeper.

Writing A Sales Representative Cover Letter

A good sales representative cover letter should make your readers curious enough to learn more about you as a sales professional that they will want to ask you about yourself in person. Let’s take a look at how to make them do just that, in five easy steps.

1. The Header

Think of yourself as a sales hiring manager. How hard are you going to look for the contact information of a candidate if they can’t even bother to provide it somewhere obvious in the sales cover letter?

Answer: not very hard. That’s why every sales position cover letter needs a header. Usually, you’ll find it across the top, though sometimes the header runs along the side of the page. It needs to include your name, phone number, address, and any other contact information you might have.

Note that while cover letters to clients or professional colleagues might include your company name, a sales job cover letter should not. Under your info, put the date.

Note that the header is different from the salutation, which includes the hiring manager’s contact information. Don’t confuse the two.

2. How To Greet the Employer

Here is where you greet your potential employer. It has two parts: the contact info and the salutation. First, include the same contact info you included for yourself, but relevant to the hiring manager: their name, basic info and company name.

Then greet them.

You can pick from a number of ways to do this, but if you know the manager’s name, that’s the simplest. “Dear Ms. Lannister” is always better than a “Hi there,” “Greetings,” “Dear Sir or Madam” or “To Whom It May Concern.” The former two are too casual, while the latter couple are old-fashioned and make it look like you haven’t bothered to look up their name.

Note: If you can’t be sure of someone’s pronouns, opt for a neutral “Dear Hiring Manager Lannister” or their full name.

3. The Introduction

As with anything else, you have very little time to make a good impression if you want the job. Whether you’re in software sales or yacht sales, you need to punch it right from the beginning.

The introductory paragraph should emphasize why you are an ideal candidate. Remember that this paragraph needs to entice the employer to read further, and readers will lose interest in a boring introduction. Include why you’re applying, any notable sales goals you’ve met or awards you’ve won, and a lead-in to the following paragraph.

4. The Body

Here’s where you flesh out your skills and achievements in more detail. Include items such as:

  • Work experience
  • Sales experience and sales skills
  • Communication skills
  • Time management abilities
  • Achievement or award track record

Note that you should avoid bullet points, though you can use them in your sales resume. The same goes for detailing aspects of your education, with the exception being your degree (associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, etc.), which is appropriate to mention.

Mostly, this is a sales pitch that should include why you’re the best candidate for the job. Your existing knowledge and abilities are critical to whether or not you can land the role you’re looking for, so don’t hold back. While you should never brag or pass on compliments you’ve gotten, you should share exactly why you would be a good fit for the position.

5. The Conclusion

The last paragraph of your sales cover letter should include a summation, references, and the fond wish that you hear from the hiring manager again. It’s okay to use humor here as long as it is tasteful and doesn’t become the focus on the letter.

If you prefer a more serious tone, simply express your gratitude and desire to hear from them again.

Cover Letter Examples

There exist a wide variety of job positions in the sales world, with different focuses, locations and levels of seniority. No one size fits all when it comes to sales jobs, which is why you need to tailor your sales cover letter to the exact position you’re looking for.

Naturally, we can’t cover every possible job title in a single post. However, the following sales cover letter example list should give you a fairly good idea of what employers are looking for. Sales Associate Cover Letter

If you’re just beginning your career in sales , then chances are good you might find yourself at a retail location. From cell phone stores to electronics outlets, car dealerships to boutiques that pay on commission, these are great places to cut your sales teeth.

Just because they’re good for entry-level employees doesn’t mean employers don’t expect a good showing, however. You’ll still need a cover letter that impresses. Go through the sales cover letter sample list below to see what we’re talking about:

Inside Sales Rep Cover Letter

Responsible for selling products and services from company headquarters or satellite offices rather than retail locations where customers walk in, inside sales reps spend a lot of time on the phone and using email. (Ideally for the company, they’re also spending plenty of time using smart automated sales software , but that’s another subject.)

If you hope to become an inside sales rep, you’ll need a sales representative cover letter that demonstrates related abilities. That includes good customer service, the ability to focus under pressure, and a solid background in sales or its theory. Take a look at these examples:

Outside Sales Rep Cover Letter

While their inside counterparts work at a company building, outside sales reps travel to various locations to meet with clients on their turf. The two jobs have much in common, but an outside sales rep must demonstrate a skill set specific to traveling and meeting people in person.

Sales Manager Cover letter

Whether you’re already a manager hoping for a position at a new company, or you want to get a managerial job for the first time, the competition is stiff. You’ll need to show you not only have sales chops, but that you can manage people at the same time.

A sales manager cover letter should include how long you’ve been in the industry, how many people you’ve managed, your previous positions, your sales quota history and any related stats. These letters showcase exactly how to present professionally and put yourself in the running for manager:

You may have noticed that most of the above cover letter examples come with offers from their sites to help you craft your own cover letter (and often resume). If you don’t feel confident that you can do a stellar job yourself, go ahead and use one of those templates. Over time, you can use those skills to begin writing cover letters yourself, but there’s no pressure to do so now.

Why Are Sales Cover Letters Effective?

Again, writing a sales cover letter might feel daunting when you first set out to do it. In addition to making you look responsible and organized, however, a cover letter will immediately push you further up in the queue because a full 45 percent of job applicants don’t even include one. If you can get ahead of nearly half of the competition that easily, why wouldn’t you?

At the end of the day, a cover letter just isn’t that hard, and the potential rewards are indisputable. Take this opportunity to write the best cover letter you can, tailoring it to the job description and using a cover letter builder if necessary. There’s nothing wrong with getting a little help, but there’s everything wrong with leaving an opportunity on the table. That’s just not how salespeople roll, right?

C over letters can be the first chance you get to stand out to your potential employer. What makes them so difficult to get right is that there’s no clear-cut formula. But there are certainly a few pointers to help you along.

Ultimately, the sole point of a cover letter is to draw attention to your CV , which holds all of your relevant information, experience and skills. In just a couple of short paragraphs, you should be able to show competent language skills, that you’d be suitable for the role in terms of your skills and experience, and that you have a genuine interest in the job.

To get this right, a cover letter should be unique to the organisation and job you’re applying to. “It must never feel like a one size fits all application letter that has been sent out to everyone,” says Hannah Morton-Hedges from Momentum Careers Advice .

It’s important to show that you’ve researched the company, so you’re able to clearly show you’re the right person to work there. “We love to see covering letters where applicants have made a real effort to connect with us, show that they understand a bit about us and therefore why we would be a particularly good match for each other,” says Rachel Gowers, a people and culture manager at customer ratings firm TruRating .

“What makes cover letters tricky is that they will always be subjective,” Morton-Hedges adds. “In my experience, it is those candidates who are really able to articulate their specific interest in the organisation who produce the stand-out examples.”

In terms of what should actually go in the letter, the advice can vary, but essentially you should “explain why you have applied for this job, what appeals to you about the role and why you would love to work for this organisation”, says Lisa LaRue, career and interview coach at CareerWorx . Highlight why you would be suitable for the job – but make sure you don’t repeat the information on your CV.

“A cover letter must explain how you meet the employers needs; it’s not about you, so don’t overuse ‘I’,” LaRue says.

It’s an overstated but vital point that employers don’t have a lot of time to look at job applications, so cover letters should always be kept short and succinct.

Jon Gregory, a job search, application and interview specialist, suggests that the best formula is to write an introduction that “states what job you are applying for and that you believe you’re a good match based on the ad requirements for the following reasons...” He suggests you should then include a three bullet point summary of why you are a great choice to interview: “It gets them to open your CV with enthusiasm.”

Another option is “an introduction, a body consisting of two paragraphs outlining your suitability for the role – including competency examples wherever possible – and a closing paragraph reiterating your interest and fit for the role,” says Victoria McLean, founder of CityCV.co.uk.

The style of the cover letter will always depend on the person and the industry, but it’s widely recommended to keep professional. Sarah Archer, founder of CareerTree , says: “Some [sectors] are more traditional and will expect a formal letter style, others will be happy with an informal approach.”

It’s always best to address the letter to a named person – LinkedIn is usually a good place to search, or it’s advisable to call the organisation and ask for the correct name. If not, you can use “Dear Sir/Madam” (although this formality may not be suitable for more modern, startup companies).

If you’re worried about coming across too professional so that any semblance of your personality disappears, you could open the letter with something friendly like, “I hope you’re well”, advises Andrew Fennell, the director of StandOut CV , adding, “keep the tone of your writing slightly conversational, especially when emailing.” To maintain a more natural and personal tone, try drafting it in “spoken form first. This can help to signpost any overly formal or clunky wording”, says Lis McGuire, founder of Giraffe CV .

And if a job ad doesn’t specifically ask for a cover letter, it’s always worth writing an email in the shape of a cover letter anyway. “A cover letter is simply a note to introduce yourself and ensure that your CV gets opened, so in this case you should write your cover note in the body of the email,” says Fennell.

McGuire agrees: “A cover email is a pitch. Imagine it as what you’d say to the recipient if you had the chance to hand over your CV and letter in person.”

A good cover letter should be able to make potential employers take an interest in you. But to show them why you’d be the right person for job, you must first “know what is good about yourself. The key is to take stock of your unique selling points”, says LaRue. “You need to really understand the value you bring to a potential employer to tell them why you’re best for the job.”
