An international resume refers to a resume you make for another country.

For example, if you live in England, any resume you create to secure a position outside of your home country counts as an international resume format.

You still include essential information , such as your education, but you adjust the information based on the country’s standards.

Is your international resume good enough?

Drop your resume here or choose a file . PDF & DOCX only. Max 2MB file size.

If you want to master the international resume format, you must understand the necessary sections .

While you need to include the standard information about your certifications and work experience, you must add the following sections to offer more information.

Language skills section

As you work on your international CV format, you need to include a language skills section and mention it in your summary and resume objective .

Countries want to know if you speak other languages to communicate with companies, so mention any additional languages you speak.

Specific skills/software knowledge

Creating a functional resume includes mentioning unique skills and software knowledge . Do some research and see what skills and software the country expects you to understand.

The skills and knowledge you need in an international resume format vary, so see what other countries expect from someone in your industry.

Personal info (header sections)

When you create a resume in the international CV format, you may need to include personal information. Some countries want you to have your name, birth date, and even a picture.

Include a header section with action verbs to make yourself stand out while you personalize your resume.

Although the US prefers one-page resumes , some countries want longer ones. Make sure you look up resume templates for the country to determine the expected size.

Using Enhancv’s resume builder you can choose between A4 and Letter Size style.

If you have too much experience and information to cover, you need to try a combination resume or reverse chronological resume to meet the length requirements.

More from Enhancv

Whether you translate your resume depends on the circumstance. If you plan to apply for a company where everyone speaks English, you may not need to translate it.

Usually, international companies will tell you what language they require on resumes.

If you plan to work as a translator or speak another language, you should write a resume in that language.

As you create an international resume, remember the key sections. Doing so will help you figure out how to craft your resume and if you need to translate it.

If you need help creating a resume for an international position, you can try Enhancv’s resume builder to craft the perfect application.

How To Update Your Resume After Living Abroad

So, you’ve been living overseas and not working a traditional job. And now you have a “gap” on your resume? You’ve come to the right place. I feel your anxiousness but I’m here to tell you there doesn’t need to be a gap on your resume. You were doing amazing things abroad and learning new skills that will serve you well in your future career. I will help you fill in that “gap” so future potential employers will be intrigued and impressed with your resume rather than driven away from it.

Now let’s clean up that resume.

What Have You Been Doing?

First, tell the reader what you have been doing since your last job. I understand how living overseas can quickly fill your days but you need to assume the reader of your resume knows nothing about living overseas. Have you been volunteering? Have you been taking care of your household? Spending time exploring your surroundings or learning a new language? Started a side hustle to earn money?

These are all great things that future employers would love to know about. They show initiative, that you’re able to think outside the box and that you’re a hard worker. If you only have a big blank on your resume, they’re going to assume you didn’t do anything.

Skills Learned While Living Overseas

What skills have you learned living overseas that will directly correlate to the workplace? I actually think there are soo many that you’ll have trouble narrowing it down. The biggest one that I think everyone should include is communication skills.

If you’ve been living in a country that does not speak your native language, you have had to use verbal and nonverbal communication skills like crazy!  Think about it, every time you leave your house (and sometimes in your home!), you’re put into a world that you cannot easily communicate with. Whether it’s ordering food, asking for help, or reading street signs. You have to learn ways to communicate to make a life in a new country. And it’s not easy.

Your communication skills have definitely been refined while living abroad. And employers are always looking for people who can communicate well.

Other Skills

update-your-resume-after-living-abroad.JPG

Other skills that come to mind are adaptability or flexibility. Other cultures are not as rigid as Western cultures. This takes getting used to and adapting to your new destination. Employers love this because it shows you can thrive outside your comfort zone.

Were you a stay-at-home-mom-or-wife? Did you have a maid, nanny or driver? Or anyone that you paid for their services, such as a repair person?

I’m sure your negotiating skills were put to the test almost monthly when it came to pay, time off and services. These things aren’t as clearly defined in other countries and it’s definitely a negotiation that gets revisited several times a year. Being able to handle yourself during a negotiation (much less in a different language!) is a rare skill employers will appreciate.

A Separate Skills Section

Create a separate “skills acquired while living overseas” section. You have gained specialized skills most people don’t have and it deserves its own space on your resume. Don’t sell yourself short! The skills you learned living overseas will be a great advantage to your new employer.

update-your-resume-after-living-abroad.JPG

A Diverse Mindset

Side note - anyone that has lived abroad understands how diversity is a huge part of their life. And employers are looking for potential employees that will thrive in a diverse environment.

This not only means race and nationality, but diversity of thought as well. Remember that culture that was nothing like yours? Well, you gained a whole new perspective living and assimilating to that culture. And your new way of looking at things will always be a part of your decision making.

Employers want someone who can bring new and diverse ideas to the table. Having a diverse mindset is not easy to find on the job market and simply by living in a new country, you have expanded this for yourself. Be sure to play this up on your resume!

How do These Skills Benefit the Employer ?

Employers need to be shown how the new skills you gained while living overseas will translate into their workplace. You need to fit the pieces together for them.

To do this, review the job description and write out the requirements, job duties or skills they’re seeking which correlate directly with the skills you’ve learned.  These are the bullet points you’ll want to include under your most recent experience, titled “Expat Living in __ Country”.

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

For example, let’s say one line in the job description of a job you’re interested in applying for says “Coordinate and manage a project between multiple internal groups”.

Next, think about how over the past few years you’ve had to coordinate things. Maybe you had to coordinate your move overseas. Were there a lot of moving parts? Visas? Finances? Selling goods? Buying goods? Packing for the entire family? Juggling packing in suitcases, air shipments and sea shipment? Well, that’s a lot of coordinating. That's serious real world experience that correlates to “Coordinate and manage a project from multiple internal groups”. Don’t you think?!

Now put that on your resume! Something along the lines of “Coordinated 2 international moves”. And be ready to explain in a phone or in-person interview what all it entailed.

This is a great way to tie the skills you learned while living overseas in with the job description and stand out as an ideal candidate. Even if you haven’t had a traditional job for the past few years.

Examples for your Resume:

Below, I’ve provided some examples of how you can show future employers what you’ve done overseas and the skills required for those activities.

Update-Your-resume-After-Living-Abroad.jpg

Taught English to local population. Including preparing lessons, communicating in foreign language & offline help

Held Treasurer position for the Women's Association. Responsible for collecting dues, balancing association budget & organizing monthly meeting notes

Helped organize fundraiser for local orphanage

Managed household staff of 3. Included interviewing, negotiating & having difficult conversations

Coordinated weekly women's group, including organizing food, entertainment & logistics

Copywriting & photography skills by creating an instagram account @insertname

If you follow these steps when updating your resume, that gap you were concerned about will disappear. In its place you’ll have an awesome section that highlights what you did with your time overseas. And the skills you learned while living overseas. I’m so excited for you because this will actually help you stand out to employers in today's diverse job market!

How to Write a Resume Applying For a Job Overseas

Applying for a new job is never easy, but time-consuming, nerve-wrecking and complex process. Moreover, in the «working abroad» case a lot is on the stake, so the outline of one`s skills is to be just perfect. But how can you make a resume for the job in another country? Are the resume standards the same around the globe? Do resume templates vary drastically from the one that I`ve mastered? What should I know to get the job abroad? Let`s browse the following tips to do well.

Take one country for starters

You may not realize it now, however getting a job in another country is really tough, so you`ll need a lot of preparation and homework. The first thing in the row is to pick top country you want to move in. Give this issue a careful consideration: discover cultural differences, browse visa details, find out info about A-list companies situated in the area, mind your knowledge of language and availability of job offers. Create a list of desired places in the Earth to go to and pick the best one.

Create a global resume

That means to generate an outstanding outline of your professional life and highlight your cross-cultural skills , show your other talents, which are unique and desirable for the position you are willing to obtain. Be careful, as, for example, in the UK you`ll need to write a CV (an overview of an applicant`s entire career) but in the USA there is no such thing, instead they have a resume (a concise outline of one`s skills relevant to one position). So spend some time researching the exact type of outline you are to present in a particular country.

The most widespread features of a global resume are:

  • Current contact details and address information;
  • Data about education and GPA (both secondary school and institution of higher education);
  • Precise info about achievements at the workplaces and successful projects;
  • A section, where tech skills and language aptitudes are listed (NB! Indicate your native language clearly!);
  • Professionally taken photo at the top of a resume.

Be attentive reading job description

Yes, keep your eyes wide open and give yourself some time to digest all the information in the job description. Do you have MOST of the experience for the desired position? If you don`t, move on to the more relevant fit. Are you satisfied with the offered salary? Take into account that you`ll need at least to rent a flat, buy some food and tickets for the bus. Will you be able to be there when asked? Bear in mind that you`ll need some time to get to the place, accommodate and only then you`ll be able to get down to business.

Keep your resume simple

woman typing her resume

Basically, resume format matters in all parts of the world. Your resume is to be easy-to-read, truthful and catchy, so you`ll need to use best resume font , which is sans serif of minimum size 10. Keep in mind that a recruiter from another part of the world can`t see how great you are, but he has your resume to understand what type of a human you are. Thus wise pick the style of a resume , which represents yourself. However, do not overdo, - the style doesn`t have to distract the reader from the vital info on the page. Also avoid using over-used words in your resume.

Think about summary sentence

Here your task is to convince the reader that you`re a perfect fit for the company and that you`re able to bring fresh blood into the life of the firm. The other thing to highlight in the summary is your prior goal, however do not go for long-winded explanation, two-three sentences are enough.

Discover appropriate resume/ CV length

You`d better watch it as there are various length preferences across the globe, for instance, in the USA a resume should be 1 page long. It has to be precise, short and relevant to the particular vacancy. However, if you have 15+ years of experience, this size can be extended up to two pages. In the rest of the world the general standard is more flexible, usually 2-4 sheets.

Understand a photo usage in resume

This issue is a dubious one. In European and Asian countries you can`t write a resume without a portrait in it. On the other hand, in the USA and the UK they traditionally avoid including a photo into one`s outline as it may be regarded as violation of the laws, which prohibit previewing an applicant`s appearance.

Line up your education and International working experience

You may face the difficulty of the expected amount of information you are to share in a certain place. A good example in this case is America, where a resume typically has only data about university and graduate`s school. Contrastingly, in most parts of the rest of the world it is preferred to list only basic secondary school information.

List your personal information

The diversity here lies in cultural matters. In such high contact cultures as Asian and European applicants commonly include their marital status, age, gender and nationality, however in the USA that`ll be really odd.

Don`t forget to write a cover letter

Creating a cover letter is a sure-fire decision for those, who want to be represented as problem solving and active worker. A cover letter shows to a hiring manager a candidate`s performance in action. The best advice here is to discuss current challenges of the company you apply for and offer ways to solve these problems. This will be your ace in the hole.

Always use LinkedIn

Social media are vital these days, however LinkedIn is the best one in the process of job search as it not only shows your professional activity and skills, but also gives a recruiter an inside look into your interests and preferences. That`s why you are to make sure that your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date. It`s also advantageous to follow top companies in the field of your work, comment trendy career discussions and make connections with experts of your sphere.

Tips To Score Bonus Points On Your Resume

A resume aims to create a good impact or impression on the recruiter. But how can you score bonus points on your resume when applying for work overseas? Check out the following tips:

  • Prove Your Linguistic Skills
  • Mention Your Tech-Savvy Skills

Many companies consider tech-savviness as an essential skill when hiring new employees. So, don't miss the chance to capture their attention with a list of technical skills you possess, such as using different types of software programs and applications. Other examples of technical skills include coding or programming, data analytics, system design, graphic design, and scrum and agile proficiency.

  • Takeaway

You can create an impactful resume to apply for a job overseas with the tips shared above. Aside from highlighting your educational background and work experience, make sure to include the relevant skills you have to increase your likelihood of landing your dream job abroad.

Even when Industrial Personnel & Management Services, Inc. (IPAMS) founder Raymond E. Wilmarth, Ph.D., retired as the IPAMS President Emeritus Chairman of the Board, he lived his life by taking the company under his wing and bringing it forward.

Wilmarth’s journey has been about extraordinary service and labor relations, but this wasn’t enough for the founder, as he introduced his own values, ethics, and strategies into the world, through IPAMS, a placement agency for Filipino professionals.

What is IPAMS Agency? Industrial Personnel & Management Services, Inc.

IPAMS is a licensed and multi-awarded recruitment agency based in the Philippines. It is reputed for excellent career placement, mostly among Filipino professionals and workers worldwide. Established in 1971 and incorporated in 1972, the 30-year-old company is believed to have had over 50,000 excellent workers placed and settled in various companies in different parts of the world.

As an agency, IPAMS was established as the brainchild of Dr. Wilmarth after his 16 years of exemplary service at Caltex. IPAMS was his second company, and it was launched after Wilmarth’s Industrial Relations Counseling Practice, Raymond E. Wilmarth & Associates, which was set up so he could keep working as an independent counselor for Caltex. Later on, through his efforts and skills, IPAMS expanded its operations globally, placing Filipino professionals in various fields worldwide.

Fifty years later, IPAMS remains one of the world’s leading placement agencies. Not only do they secure the best placements around the world, but they also successfully pooled the best talents the Philippines has to offer, thanks to the stringent processes they have in place—with tried and tested theories and practices the founder himself swore by during his years with the most successful companies.

  • All applications are registered online through the IPAMS Website or the IPAMS Mobile App.
  • IPAMS recruiters routinely check these submitted applications every day, so if you qualify based on the initial qualifications stated in the job description, you can expect them to reach out to you via mobile phone or social media app (Skype or Facebook Messenger). Likewise, there is no need to visit to confirm if the application has been received.
  • For shortlisted candidates preparing for the final interview, note that IPAMS makes all the necessary arrangements with the prospective employers regarding how the final interviews will be conducted. For updates, IPAMS will revert to the shortlisted candidates via email, skype, or Facebook Messenger.
  • For in-process workers who are getting ready for mobilization, only IPAMS project officers handling the mobilization process can provide instructions and respond to queries regarding your mobilization status.

Tips for IPAMS Applicants

IPAMS prides itself on its success in placing excellent professionals worldwide. This success is no small feat, and part of it stems from their careful nurturing that almost always leads to successful placements in their preferred locations.

In nurturing the applicants, IPAMS has on-site tips and reminders to help the applicants successfully secure their preferred positions.

Writing your Resume/CV

  • Update your resume/CV and ensure it reflects the complete information about you, your educational background, and your work history.
  • Always list all your tasks, responsibilities, and job descriptions truthfully.
  • Make sure that the employment dates on your work history match those on your Certificate of Employment (COE).
  • Update your contact information, including your mobile numbers and email addresses, so you can be contacted immediately without missing important feedback and updates.
  • Be true to your CV. State whether you are a college undergraduate or not, whether you resigned or were retrenched on your last job. Don’t be afraid to put these important details, but don’t forget to state why.

Note that providing the complete and accurate information on your CV will help the evaluators assess your qualifications for the position you are applying for. This will also improve the strength of your resume as it is highly dependent on the details of the job titles you once held.

Interview Tips for IPAMS Applicants

  • Pay close attention to every detail of the job opening to see if it is something you can and are qualified to do. Make sure you match the qualifications and have the necessary experience or background to do the job. Do away with the “try ko lang” mentality. Not all companies happily welcome interns and would be nice enough to let you learn while on their grounds.
  • Do your homework and check out the company and the work location. It’s not enough to know that the company is legit, so personally checking for more information about it is a necessary step when applying for a job. It would help you answer the job interview question and give you an idea if it was where you see yourself growing into a much better individual for a certain period. Plus, knowing about the company and surrounding areas will be pretty helpful when you actually get hired. You may check Google, Wikipedia, Youtube, or any online site to help you have a better understanding of the country’s culture, traditions, rules, and labor policies. Take the time to also check if there is a Philippine Embassy or Labor Office nearby in case of emergencies.
  • Get your Pre-employment Orientation Seminar (PEOS) Certificate. The Pre-Employment Orientation Seminar (PEOS) certificate is a mandatory requirement set by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW, formerly known as the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency or POEA). It is a necessary document to secure if you are looking to apply for a job overseas.

For more information about obtaining your PEOS certificate, you may check our previous article on How to Register POEA Pre-Employment Orientation Seminar (PEOS) Certificate Online .

  • Research about the agency. Whether it’s IPAMS or any other agency, you should always do your due diligence and check on the agency and its status. Visit their official website or check the government’s list of registered agencies and ensure they have the necessary licenses. Check the reviews and comments about the agency and find out whether or not they collect placement fees. Check the location and verify that they have a legitimate office that runs a legitimate operation before entrusting them with your sensitive personal information and IDs. This will ensure you don’t fall prey to illegal recruiters.
  • Prepare yourself and your outfit for the interview. Keep in mind that the first impression lasts. Make sure you dress appropriately in neat clothing and wear your best smile during the interviews. Avoid cloying scents, wear mild perfume/cologne, and make sure you bring breath mints to keep your breath fresh during the wait. Sit properly and avoid stretching or yawning. Keep your posture and ensure you have enough confidence to communicate in English before attending the interview.
  • Be attentive and interactive. That said, listen carefully and answer appropriately. Avoid making the interviewer repeat himself. When answering, make sure to keep eye contact and smile. Don’t stutter, and make sure your nerves don’t show. Keep your emotions in check, and do not show desperation or that you badly need the job. Just be confident and answer the interview question as factual as possible.
  • Never ask for the salary offer during an interview. Instead, show off your capabilities and convince the interviewer that you should be hired for the job. Salary offers usually depend on the skills and qualifications and is typically discussed at the end of the interview, so there is no need to ask.
  • Be respectful. Remember: Interviewers are trained to ask questions that they need to ask and to assess applicants simply from their demeanor, attitude, and answers. They hold the key if you want to successfully ace the interview. It pays to stay humble, knowing that your future as an employee is in the hands of the person conducting your interview. That said, respect their position and know they are always better than you if you are still an applicant, so you can’t be snotty or show a bad attitude towards them.
  • Listen carefully and remember the interviewer’s instructions. Take down notes if you have to, but do note that the interviewers won’t say anything that is not important to your application. That said, make sure you understand and remember what they tell you. Or, if it’s unclear, ask clarificatory questions and ensure you know what they tell you before you leave.
  • If you ace the initial interview and you get scheduled for the employer’s final interview, just follow the instructions stated in your email invitation to the letter. Applicants need to prove to their employers that they can follow instructions when necessary. It shows that you are a reliable person who understands orders and is willing to do so should you get hired for the position.

No Placement Fees

IPAMS doesn’t collect any fees. Unlike other agencies that falsely advertise “no fees” but charge applicants in the form of hidden charges, IPAMS maintains its position of “no placement fee, no processing fees, and no salary deduction arrangement for all its worldwide recruitment.

It’s a golden rule for IPAMS, traced back to when it was founded in 1971. According to them, all charges, including recruitment and deployment expenses and the initial compulsory insurance coverage, are paid for by their clients so they can maintain the highest standards of integrity and service without collecting fees from their applicants.

Salary Rates and Benefits

Typically, salary rate offers are commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications, skills, and experience. At IPAMS, salary rates are usually not discussed until after the selection process is complete. It is generally addressed in a formalized Offer of Employment, along with the accompanying employee benefits package and other terms and conditions stipulated in the Employment Contract.

As IPAMS only chooses the most reputable clients, the placement agency promises applicants that they can be assured that they will get a highly competitive compensation and benefits package if they make it through the final interview.

How to Successfully Submit a Resume or CV

Almost every company has a “ job board ” and is called a “ careers page ” but how can you ensure the successful submission of your resume?

Here are some tips to make sure your profile record is submitted and complete:

How often should your profile be updated?

  • Missing a profile update after being posted or posted on the job board is often a mistake by applicants that can affect how the recruiter communicates.
  • Be sure to keep contact details and work experiences updated whenever there is a change.
  • It’s a good idea to update the profile every three or six months.
  • The date of the last profile update will appear in the database.
If it is found that your profile was last changed in the past two years, the application will be dismissed in the mind of the recruiter who may have changed your contact information or perhaps you are no longer currently looking for work. This is especially true when finding a recruiter is urgent.

How many job boards should be used?

You can sign up on any job boards if desired because it will increase online exposure to the job opportunity. Popular job boards such as POEAJobs.ph, WorkAbroad.ph, Jobstreet.com, JobsDB.com, and Monster.com. However, we recommend limiting yourself to two or three accounts if you do not update frequently for three to six months.

Will I submit it in MSWord or PDF format?

Most databases use “ keyword search features ” to give recruiters easy time reviewing thousands of resumes. Completing or filling out an electronic application form and submitting a resume in Word format is highly recommended to expedite and facilitate the search for “ skill matches .” In addition to the resume, the submission of a cover letter is also recommended.

Use a separate personal email address.

When submitting a resume online, make sure that personal email is used to receive notifications and invitations from employers. Do not use email at work or office. It is recommended to create a separate and personal account that will only be used in online job applications (for example [email protected] or [email protected]). This helps in easily monitoring job application updates and isolates regular personal emails that may be flooded connected to other online accounts. It will also help to quickly respond to the message with a business-like address.

Don’t forget the username and password.

Although job boards allow for a new password in case you forget the original password, it is recommended that user credentials be preserved so that the profile can be easily updated as needed.

Do not forward password-protected documents.

The purpose of submitting an application online is to make it easy for the recruiter to find you.

Passing a password-protected document is not encouraged because: This will result in the recruiter skipping or not paying attention to the application especially if there are more than one hundred resumes that need to be reviewed, missing the opportunity to see your application by recruiters.

Job boards are public databases where a record of the jobs of member companies is released at any time visible to applicants.

The employer receives applications online throughout the time the job is scheduled to be open. Millions of applications are submitted every day using job boards. These are usually free to use and provide a way to submit a resume. Follow the steps so that your well -done resume and cover letter will take you to the new job!

How to watch every memorable moment of the 2024 masters on tv or streaming live.

2024-masters-flag-schedule-g.jpg

The most wonderful time of the golf season has arrived once again as the beauty of April surrounds Augusta National Golf Club this week. The 2024 Masters is a star-studded affair with a loaded field featuring the best golfers in the world. Jon Rahm is struggling early in his quest to defend the green jacket, while Scottie Scheffler entered as the favorite and started out  on fire through his first 18 holes , shooting arguably the best round of the opening day.

Rory McIlroy is once again seeking to add the final piece his career grand slam, and he started play with his first under-par opening round at Augusta National in six years. Five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods is back in action for just the second time this season, and though he has not produced many fireworks, his effort has been consistent around the course at which he is most familiar.

Round 2 is off and running Friday, so be sure to check out Masters tee times and pairings  and follow along throughout the day with our Masters live leaderboard coverage offering analysis and highlights throughout the second round of the year's first major.

While attending the Masters is a dream for many, simply being able to watch golf on the grandest stage of them all is an incredible treat each year, and we here at CBS Sports are thrilled to bring you wall-to-wall coverage of the Masters throughout this week.

CBS Sports offers extensive, week-long coverage across all its platforms with its traditional 18-hole broadcast coverage beginning with the third round on Saturday and final-round action on Sunday. Jim Nantz, in his 39th consecutive year covering the Masters, serves as host for the 37th time. 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman joins Nantz as the lead analyst at the Masters for the second time. Nantz and Immelman link up with CBS Sports' incredible golf team, including on-course reporter Dottie Pepper and the legendary Verne Lundquist, who will be calling his final Masters.

Enough talking about it. Here's how you can watch as much Masters as possible throughout the week. Be sure to stick with CBS Sports for live coverage throughout and download the CBS Sports app  to watch Masters Live on your mobile device.

Student-voted D.O.N.E. awards also went to George Naser Khoury ’24, Margaret Kruzner ’24, Casey Witte ’24, and three student groups

Derrick Jeffries

Christopher Buccafusco received the Distinguished Teaching Award and Derrick Jeffries was honored as Distinguished Staff Member at the 2024 D.O.N.E. Awards on April 10.

Buccafusco, the Edward & Ellen Schwarzman Distinguished Professor of Law, who teaches classes including Torts, Copyright Law, and Design Law, has had “an indelible academic impact” on his students and made them think about the law in a much deeper and sophisticated way, said one student who nominated him.

Accepting the honor, Buccafusco said he was “incredibly impressed” with the students at Duke Law and grateful for his colleagues.

“Getting to be a law professor anywhere is a kind of loophole in the universe. We are incredibly lucky to get to do this, but we are especially lucky to get to do this here at a place like Duke,” he said.

The D.O.N.E. Awards – D.O.N.E. stands for Duke Law Outstanding and Noteworthy Endeavors – are sponsored by the Duke Bar Association to honor students, student organizations, faculty members, and staff who have made significant contributions to the Duke Law community through their leadership, innovation, service and dedication.

Nominations are submitted by students and winners are determined by a committee of students from all three JD class years and the LLM class.

DBA Academics Chair Jody Messick ’26 hosted the ceremony.

The first award, for Distinguished Staff Member, was presented by Emma Cline ’26 to Derrick Jeffries, a member of the Facilities staff and a positive and steadying presence in the halls of Duke Law. Jeffries, she said, consistently goes above and beyond for students — getting to know them, returning lost items, and, importantly, remembering what they share about themselves.

As his family and friends looked on, Jeffries took the podium amid loud applause from students, and spoke movingly about the power of a smile and a kind word.

“I don't do this for me. I do this for y’all. I take my job seriously,” Jeffries said with a catch in his voice. “All the students and staff, everybody I meet, I'll say ‘Good morning’ because you never know what kind of day a person had before. Greeting them with a smile or a good morning can change their mood, can change their day.

“I just try to be encouraging and show support to all the students. I see how hard it is. I see how there are late nights, there are early mornings, how they come in tired sometimes, and I just try to encourage them,” Jeffries said.

“Peace and your mental health are very important. So when you feel crammed and just overwhelmed, take a break but don't quit. Do something you enjoy doing. If it is going to get something to eat, getting something to drink, just sitting outside, just getting some sun, take a break but don't quit — and come back.”

Christopher Buccafusco

Buccafusco, the Distinguished Teaching honoree, was described by a student as ‘simply the most amazing, iconic and incredible professor’ they have had at Duke, presenter Hamza Chaudhry ’25 said.

“Whether he is teaching 1L Torts or Copyright, this professor brings a unique analytical rigor to his classroom,” Chaudhry said. “[He] is also noteworthy for the energy and commitment he brings to Duke Law. … This year's award winner consistently goes the extra mile to show his love for our community.”

As a student in Buccafusco’s Torts class, Chaudhry said, “my assumptions about the law were pushed to their limits in an environment that was both relaxing yet deeply enriching. [His] lecture on the intersection between disability rights, tort law, and measures of happiness is something that fundamentally shaped how I see the world.”

Buccafusco said he was deeply honored to receive the student-voted award and called being a law professor “a great job.”

“The kinds of people I get to work with here, my colleagues on the faculty who inspire me to write and think about new ideas in new ways, the staff that we have, are just the best possible people,” he told students.

“All of these people make our lives infinitely better every single day that we come in, and we are incredibly lucky to get to work with them, but I feel especially lucky to get to work with you. I am just so incredibly impressed with your dedication, your thoughtfulness, and the ways in which you relate to one another.

“The law is enormously serious. The sorts of discussions that we have every day in class and outside of class determine the course of people's lives, affect how massive amounts of humanity co-exist with one another, and the extent to which you are all capable of taking those sorts of questions incredibly seriously, but also — and this is key for me, and I think for you — not necessarily taking yourselves all that seriously, this is a hugely valuable thing to do. Your ability to make sure that you are understanding that the stuff we do matters, but that we can all nonetheless engage with one another in a friendly, compassionate, thoughtful way has been hugely inspiring to me.”

Three student leaders were also recognized for their service and community-building efforts:

  • Margaret Kruzner ’24 received the Outstanding Student Organization Leader Award for her “tireless” leadership of the Moot Court Board. “It is often a thankless job to be the leader of an organization like Moot Court because everyone wants to compete or have the honor on their resume, but she took on the mantle and oversaw several competitions and handled it all with grace,” Cline said. “I have gotten to know [Margaret] over the past semester and she has been an incredible role model for me.”
  • Casey Witte ’24 received the Outstanding Contribution to the Duke Law Community award for consistently going above and beyond to cultivate a supportive and inclusive community for his peers. “Whether through organizing events, spearheading initiatives, or simply lending a listening ear, he has demonstrated a profound commitment to the wellbeing and success of his fellow students,” Messick said. “His impact extends far beyond the confines of our classroom and lecture halls. He has been a beacon of encouragement and support, inspiring others to strive for excellence and to embrace the values of collaboration.”
  • George Naser Khoury ’24 won the Richard Lin Service Above Self Award, which honors Lin, a member of the Class of 2016, and is given to a student who embodies Lin’s qualities of optimism, integrity, humility, and generosity of time and energy. “As Richard shared during his [Convocation] address in 2016 , this year's award winner is one of those ‘solid people who do the right thing on a daily basis and makes a world of a difference,’” Chaudhry said. “When one student had to defend her master's thesis on a random weekday afternoon and could not find childcare, he volunteered to watch her son for the afternoon in the office. And he did not just watch him, he fed him snacks, played iPad videos, and even blew his nose when his asthma kicked in.” George Khoury is “one of the most compassionate, kind and selfless individuals in our community.”

Student organization awards were given to:

  • First Class, honored for Greatest Role in Building Relationships. In a relatively short time, First Class has built strong relationships through activities such as bringing in guest speakers on topics like personal finance — and making sure each student had the relevant book — and inviting experienced lawyers and alumni for informal knowledge sharing with students over coffee. “This organization facilitates belonging in our community by bringing attention to critical life skills essential that are essential for every pre-professional student,” Messick said. “As first generation lawyers, these interactions have not only provided invaluable mentorship opportunities, but have also forged long lasting connections that extend beyond the confines of our campus.”
  • The Duke Law Federalist Society was recognized for Outstanding Contribution to Civil Discourse. “The importance of creating spaces for informed discussion is more challenging than ever. The sheer number of events that this organization has hosted is impressive in its own right, but what's more, this organization has not shied away from tackling contentious issues like censorship, gender and sports and abortion on the constitution,” Messick said. “It has also delved into the complexities of judicial review and practicing law with integrity. … This organization's dedication to fostering open dialogue and intellectual engagement has left a mark on the Duke law community.”
  • Broad Street Law, which leads interactive pre-law lessons twice a week for children in detention at the Durham Youth Home, received the award for Greatest Service to the Outside Community for “igniting an enthusiasm for learning in kids and teenagers. They strive to make legal concepts comprehensive, yet digestible, engaging, yet approachable on topics such as criminal law, copyright law, and more,” Messick said. “As one student said in their nomination, ’There were countless meaningful moments that underscored the impact of this program. The students at the Durham Youth Home consistently surprised and inspired us with their candor, curiosity, and eagerness to engage … These young minds grappled with complex legal and societal issues with maturity and insight.’”

WASHINGTON — Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida addressed U.S. lawmakers at the Capitol on Thursday, urging them to consider the importance of global commitments at a time of tension in the Asia-Pacific and deep skepticism in Congress about U.S. involvement abroad.

Kishida is in Washington this week visiting President Biden as the White House completes hosting each leader of the Quad – an informal partnership between the U.S. Japan, Australia and India that is seen as important to countering China’s growing military strength in the region. Kishida highlighted the value of the U.S. commitment to global security and offered reassurances that Japan is a strong partner.

On Capitol Hill, his audience included many Republicans who have pushed for the U.S. to take a less active role in global affairs as they follow the “America First” ethos of Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. The Republican-controlled House has sat for months on a $95 billion package that would send wartime funding to Ukraine and Israel, as well as aid to allies in the Indo-Pacific like Taiwan and humanitarian help to civilians in Gaza and Ukraine.

“As we meet here today, I detect an undercurrent of self-doubt among some Americans about what your role in the world should be,” Kishida told Congress.

He sought to remind lawmakers of the leading role the U.S. has played globally since World War II. After dropping two nuclear weapons on Japan to end the war, the U.S. helped rebuild Japan, and the nations transformed from bitter enemies to close allies.

“When necessary, it made noble sacrifices to fulfill its commitment to a better world,” Kishida said of the U.S. Advertisement

Japan has taken a strong role in supporting Ukraine’s defense against Moscow as well as helping humanitarian aid get to Gaza. It is also seen as a key U.S. partner in a fraught region where China is asserting its strength and North Korea is developing a nuclear program.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a floor speech Thursday, “The best way the House can heed Prime Minister Kishida’s words is to pass the national security supplemental as soon as possible, to approve defense funding not just for Ukraine but also for the Indo-Pacific.”

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell also said earlier this week that he hoped Kishida’s visit would underscore “that we’re in a worldwide situation here against the enemies of democracy — led by China, Russia and Iran.”

Kishida offered reassurances that Japan is also committed to global security and human rights. He said that since recovering from the “devastation of World War II,” Japan has transformed from a reticent ally to a strong partner “standing shoulder-to-shoulder” with the U.S.

The prime minister called China’s stance “unprecedented” and “the greatest strategic challenge, not only to the peace and security of Japan but to the peace and stability of the international community at large.”

Kishida was also attending a U.S.-Japan-Philippines summit on Thursday in another effort to bolster regional cooperation in the face of China’s aggression. The United Kingdom also announced Thursday that it would hold joint military exercises with Japan and the U.S. in the Indo-Pacific next year. Advertisement

Beijing has pushed back strongly on those actions during Kishida’s visit.

Mao Ning, the Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman, said, “Despite China’s serious concerns, the U.S. and Japan attacked and smeared China on the Taiwan question and maritime issues, grossly interfered in China’s domestic affairs and violated the basic norms in international relations.”

Meanwhile, Kishida cast the future of the conflict in Ukraine as having far-reaching consequences. He emphasized that Japan has committed to providing Kyiv with $12 billion in wartime aid, including anti-drone detection systems.

“Ukraine of today may be East Asia of tomorrow,” Kishida told lawmakers, and later added: “Japan will continue to stand with Ukraine.”

The statements drew standing ovations from much of the chamber but a group of hardline conservatives remained seated. Other lawmakers skipped the speech and Capitol staff filled empty chairs with congressional aides.

Those moments encapsulated the pressure that House Speaker Mike Johnson is facing as he searches for a way forward for the foreign security package. It will be a difficult task to navigate the deep divides among Republicans. Making matters worse for the Republican speaker, he is already facing the threat of being ousted from the speaker’s office. In a statement after the address, Johnson praised the U.S. partnership with Japan and said, “We will not let tyrants disrupt the prosperity and security we all enjoy.”

Kishida, who was elected in 2021, arrived in Washington while facing political problems of his own in Japan. Polls show his support has plunged as he deals with a political funds corruption scandal within his ruling Liberal Democratic Party. The nation’s economy has also slipped to the world’s fourth-largest last year, falling behind Germany.

This is the first time a Japanese prime minister addresses Congress since Shinzo Abe traveled to Capitol Hill in 2015. Kishida is the sixth foreign leader to address Congress during Biden’s presidency.

He relished the moment and highlighted his ties to the U.S. He told lawmakers how he spent his first three years of elementary school in New York City while his father worked there as a trade official. Lawmakers applauded and laughed as he recalled American pastimes like attending baseball games and watching the Flintstones.

“I still miss that show,” Kishida told them. “Although I could never translate, ‘Yabba dabba doo.’”
