The language of luxury goods in the early 21st century increasingly resembles the language of art––terms such as “investment piece” or “limited edition” are now integrated into fashion discourse. Concentrated in the main French corporate holdings––LVMH and Kering, or in privately-owned companies such as Hermès and Chanel––the global luxury fashion brands now invest heavily in the art market to expand their influence across a broad spectrum of the visual arts, cinema, design, and architecture, to create a new intersectional definition of luxury within the global creative industries. In this article, we examine a number of case studies of collaborations between the leading Paris fashion houses and contemporary artists to illustrate this phenomenon and we conclude by arguing that the globalization of the luxury economy and the commercial expansion of the French fashion houses (targeting the consumer economies of the BRICS and the Middle East) has seen the image of France revitalised across the globe.

Le couturier français Yves Saint Laurent, créateur du smoking pour femmes, est décédé à Paris à l'âge de 71 ans des suites d'un cancer du cerveau. "Il était malade depuis un an, il avait un glioblastome, une tumeur du cerveau", a précisé sur RTL son compagnon, l'homme d'affaires Pierre Bergé. Une messe à sa mémoire a été célébrée vendredi  à 10h30 en l'église Saint-Roch, paroisse des artistes à Paris. L'homme désigné par ses initiales entrelacées "YSL" était l'une des grandes figures de la mode au XXe siècle et l'un des créateurs français les plus connus dans le monde. De la princesse Grace de Monaco à l'actrice Catherine Deneuve, ses créations ont habillées de nombreuses célébrités mais il a également été le premier à sortir la mode d'un petit cercle de privilégiés grâce à ses collections de prêt-à-porter. Le couturier, qui avait fait sensation à l'âge de 20 ans avec sa ligne "Trapèze" en rupture avec les codes de l'époque, a bâti avec Pierre Bergé, le compagnon de toute sa vie, un empire qui a été côté en bourse en 1989, une première pour une maison de couture. Le créateur, dont la santé était déclinante depuis plusieurs mois, a lutté toute sa vie contre la dépression et la tentation des paradis artificiels. Il avait fait ses adieux à la couture en 2002 après 40 ans de succès. Pour Pierre Bergé, Yves Saint Laurent restera dans le Panthéon de la mode avec Gabrielle Chanel. "L'une, Mademoiselle Chanel symbolisera la première partie du XXe siècle, et l'autre symbolisera la deuxième partie. Chanel a donné la liberté aux femmes ; Yves Saint Laurent leur a donné le pouvoir. Il a quitté le territoire esthétique pour pénétrer sur le territoire social", a ajouté Pierre Bergé, qui avait aidé Yves Saint Laurent à monter sa maison de couture en 1961. Nicolas Sarkozy a salué celui qui fût le premier à élever la haute couture au rang d'un art en lui assurant un rayonnement planétaire.

Yves Saint Laurent s’est consacré très tôt aux costumes de théâtre. Peinture, littérature, théâtre et danse ont inspirés le créateur, qui a dédié ses collections à Mondrian, Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Van Gogh, Cocteau, Diaghilev, Shakespeare, avec toujours le souci de la forme. «La robe Mondrian n'est pas un imprimé. C'est une robe faite d'une imbrication de formes géométriques découpées dans le tissu, remontées entre elles comme une mosaïque, et qui, dans ce montage très savant, permet de donner l'effet de la platitude d'un tableau, alors qu'il y a le volume du corps qui a été dégagé à l'intérieur de la structure de la robe», note l'historienne de la mode Florence Miller. Une exposition présentait l'impressionnante robe de mariée hommage à Shakespeare, mais aussi des modèles «animaux» (dont l'ensemble du soir en plumes de faisan) et floraux. On retrouvait ainsi le croquis et le modèle de la robe de mariée en fleurs portée par Laëtitia Casta en 1999.
