About this guide.

Identifying bias can be tricky because it is not clearly stated. Bias can exist on a spectrum of political ideology, religious views, financial influence, misinformation, and more. All sources should be evaluated for potential bias -- from a tweeted link to a scholarly article. This guide shows different types of bias you might encounter and gives strategies for how to identify biased sources.

Defining Bias

Find the source, find the source.

Find the source of the information you're evaluating. Ask yourself the following questions:

• Who owns/produces the source?
• Who advertises in the source? Are the advertisements appropriate for the source?
• Is there a political slant in the content?
• Does the content contain all the facts or at least present both sides of an argument fairly?
• What type of language is being used? Does the author use strong language or hyperbole?
• Do they back up their argument with factual evidence? Can you see where they got their evidence through links or citations?

To find the answer to these questions, you need to read the text carefully and you may have to do some background/fact-checking research to help determine if the source is reliable or biased.

If you notice the following, the source may be biased:

• Heavily opinionated or one-sided
• Relies on unsupported or unsubstantiated claims
• Presents highly selected facts that lean to a certain outcome
• Pretends to present facts, but offers only opinion
• Uses extreme or inappropriate language
• Tries to persuade you to think a certain way with no regard for factual evidence
• The author is unidentifiable, lacks expertise, or writes on unrelated topics
• Is entertainment-based or a form of parody or satire
• Tries to sell you something in disguise

• Hyperbole , n. -- exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally
• Objective , adj. -- (of a person or their judgment) not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts
• Parody , n. -- an imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist, or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect
• Satire , n. -- The use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's folly and vice
• Subjective , adj. -- based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions

By the end of this section, you will be able to:

• Avoid bias and stereotyping in your writing.
• Evaluate sources for language bias and stereotyping.

When you begin any research project, it is important to have set checks and balances to ensure you are not unknowingly imposing your own biases into your research. A bias is a personal and usually unreasoned judgment, or a prejudice. Although it may be impossible to function without any bias (good or bad), you can consider possible components of bias in your research. No document can be completely objective, for all documents are created by people who have been socialized in some way; therefore, it is helpful to think about the biases of authors of research documents. Many researchers are clear about their biases and state them in introductions to their writings, whereas others may use—or omit—evidence in a way that implies bias for or against the topic.

As a student researcher, seek to be as transparent and critically self-reflective as possible about your preconceptions and language use. Although you will revisit the concept of bias in source selection in The Research Process: Where to Look for Existing Sources , in this section you will look at bias in topic choice and language use.

Language Bias

Language bias refers to words and expressions that are offensive, demeaning, or prejudicial toward individuals or groups on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity, social class, appearance, physical or mental abilities, or sexual orientation. One form of language bias is sexist language that includes only one gender. The most common occurrence is use of the word man or men to stand for all people—including those who are not male. Language has changed to be more inclusive, with terms such as firefighter replacing fireman and mail carrier replacing mailman .

Another kind of language bias focuses on people’s health or abilities, indicating a person as a “victim” of a certain disease or “suffering from it.” Use unbiased language to identify the person as someone “with X disease.” Similarly, refer to a “person who is blind” rather than a “blind person.” This kind of language focuses on the person, not the disease or ability.

To avoid language bias, follow these guidelines:

• Use currently accepted terminology when referring to groups of people. If you are writing about a group of people and are unsure of the proper terminology, research the most recent usage patterns before you write. The same is true for pronoun references, about which you can find more information in Editing Focus: Pronouns and Pronouns .
• Be sensitive when referring to people with disabilities by using a “people first” approach. For example, say “a person who uses a wheelchair” instead of “a wheelchair-bound person.”
• Avoid stereotyping—that is, attributing positive or negative characteristics to people on the basis of groups to which they belong. Although not strictly linguistic, stereotyping comes through in making assumptions about people. A stereotypical attitude would be to assume that all or most rich people act in certain ways and, conversely, that all or most poor people act in certain ways. Another stereotypical attitude would be to assume that a person who comes from a particular area of the country adheres to a certain political agenda.

Assignment: Reviewing Your Research Essay for Language Bias

First, review your essay, and speculate as to biases or blocks you may have incorporated while researching and writing. Freewrite, reflecting on these possibilities. Next, go through your essay one section at a time, and highlight any people references, pronouns, biased language, and instances of possible stereotyping. Using the information above and your reflective freewrite, complete a bias chart like the one shown in Table 12.9 . Next, exchange your essay with two other classmates to see whether they detect bias of which you were unaware. After receiving feedback from two or three people, form a group and discuss what each of you found and how to use alternative language or references. Finally, revisit your freewriting after collaborating with your classmates to reconsider what you wrote before. Add a section to the freewrite in which you relate what your group discussed and what you may have learned from that discussion.

Publish Your Work

After completing your argumentative research paper, you should have a product to be proud of. Your instructor may have a plan to publish papers written by class members, or you may be interested in publishing on your own and joining a wider scholarly conversation. Consider submitting your work to one of these journals that publish undergraduate research:

Everyone has various biases on any number of topics. For example, you might have a bias toward wearing black instead of brightly colored clothes or wearing jeans rather than formal wear. You might have a bias toward working at night rather than in the morning, or working by deadlines rather than getting tasks done in advance. These examples identify minor biases, of course, but they still indicate preferences and opinions.

Handling bias in writing and in daily life can be a useful skill. It will allow you to articulate your own points of view while also defending yourself against unreasonable points of view. The ideal in persuasive writing is to let your reader know your bias, but do not let that bias blind you to the primary components of good argumentation: sound, thoughtful evidence and a respectful and reasonable address of opposing sides.

The strength of a personal bias is that it can motivate you to construct a strong argument. If you are invested in the topic, you are more likely to care about the piece of writing. Similarly, the more you care, the more time and effort you are apt to put forth and the better the final product will be.

The weakness of bias is when the bias begins to take over the essay—when, for example, you neglect opposing ideas, exaggerate your points, or repeatedly insert yourself ahead of the subject by using and repeating personal pronouns such as “I” too often, such as stating. “I believe guns should be outlawed” or “I think smoking’s bad.” Excessive repetition of any word will eventually catch the reader’s attention—and usually not in a good way. The use of I is no different.

Being aware of all three of these pitfalls will help you avoid them.

Checklist: Developing Sound Arguments

Does my essay contain the following elements?

• An engaging introduction
• A reasonable, specific thesis that is able to be supported by evidence
• A varied range of evidence from credible sources
• Respectful acknowledgment and explanation of opposing ideas

Does the Media Show Bias Essay

While today many information sources are present on the Internet, it is easy to find biases and, therefore, make conclusions implied in the news article from the beginning. Before, when media was mostly on paper, there was less available information, but biases were not so widespread too. There were several trusted media which did their best to maintain the reputation. Conversely, today there is a large number of left-, center-, and right-wing media websites, each of which presents information from its own point of view. Modern media represents a powerful tool to manipulate public opinion, and it is crucial to elucidate biases to prevent these manipulations. This essay will show that in most cases, these biases do not show in media explicitly, and thus, a reader needs to recognize them.

There are several types of media biases, and while good news reporters should know and avoid them, they may use them instead to present information from a certain point of view. The six most common types of biases are omission, source and story selection, placement, labeling, and spin (Student News Daily). Bias by omission occurs when an article leaves some relevant information, pretending that it does not exist. Source and story selection are examples of biases when reporters select only certain kinds of sources, such as right- or left-wing sources, ignoring other points of view. Placement and labeling biases occur when reporters allocate an article to the place where it is most visible or label certain people as “expert” to make some point of view more sound. Last, spin biases are based on interpretations: an article interprets some event or policy in one way, ignoring other possible interpretations.

An excellent example of media biases can be shown in three articles describing one single event: an accident on the Norfolk Southern railroad near East Palestine, Ohio. Figure 1 shows three headings from various resources, all dedicated to the same theme, but one can see how different they present it, even by titles (AllSlides). All three articles will be described below to demonstrate how various media can be biased.

In the article from ABC News, the fact is presented in a way that Norfolk Southern’s CEO faces grilling from a Senate, being harshly accused in this calamity. Despite mentioning that CEO apologized and made efforts to improve the situation, the article focuses on that Norfolk Southern experienced a large number of accidents and should be thoroughly examined to prevent them in the future (Pecorin and Pezenik). As ABC News is considered a left-wing media, its article is overly critical of Norfolk Southern and clearly shows the condemnation of its actions.

The article of Trains.com, while having a similar title, consists primarily of facts and directly presents Norfolk Southern’s CEO dialogue with the Senate members. The article focuses on flaws that are present in the company, such as a lack of protection from toxic compounds, which made the accident possible (Stephens). It also describes Senate’s requirements for the company to improve safety, such as installing 200 additional hotbox detectors and ensuring paid sick days to all workers.

Finally, Fox Business, which presents business news and information and has a clear right-wing leaning, says nothing about the grilling but emphasizes that the CEO apologized to Senate for the calamity. The article begins by describing the CEO’s speech, apologizes, and promises to help everyone who suffered from the railroad incident (Wallace). It is mentioned that more than $20 million is already spent to help families located in East Palestine. At the end of the article, Senate investigations are mentioned, but neither CEO’s dialog with them nor their requirements are described.

Word choice, fact present, and the general new source reputation all contribute to the biases that can easily be found in modern media. One can see biases by omission in all three mentioned articles (Student News Daily). Fox Business, a right-wing media favoring large businesses, mentioned mainly the CEO’s speech and that he helped suffering families with more than $20 million, only shortly noting that Senate initiated investigations (Wallace). Conversely, being left-wing media, ABC News is most critical toward Norfolk Southern and its CEO, emphasizing the company’s flaws and not mentioning the $20 million spent to support the damaged community (Pecorin and Pezenik). Trains.com is the most objective article, showing the existing data and the dialog between CEO and Senate members, letting readers make their own opinion (Stephens). Thus, while a media can reduce bias through the conscientious work of its employees, the risk of biases will still be present, depending on the point of view from which the information is presented.

Media employees can work to reduce biases, describe various points of view explicitly, and present readers with objective facts from which they can make conclusions by themselves. However, it is hard to notice all possible biases, and it is easy to concentrate on one point of view and choose sources and stories selectively, ignoring others. In addition, there are many interpretations of a single event, and each media can select its own interpretation, which is essential to remember. The example of three articles describing the Norfolk Southern railroad incident shows how different attitudes and fact collections can be. They range from condemning the company for the incident to showing that it does its best to help victims and prevent future calamities. It is important to know which biases can be present and how different information can be shown to elucidate biases and perceive all related data and as many points of view as possible.

Trans people and other gender non-conforming individuals are often judged by their physical appearance for not fitting and conforming to stereotypical norms about what it means to be a “man” or “woman.” They experience stigmatization, prejudice, bias and fear on a daily basis. While some may see trans people as inferior, others may lack awareness and understanding about what it means to be trans.

“The notion that there are two and only two genders is one of the most basic ideas in our binary Western way of thinking. Transgender people challenge our very understanding of the world. And we make them pay the cost of our confusion by their suffering.” [12]

Bias and prejudice, or simply ignorance, can lead to isolation, vulnerability, disadvantage and discrimination at school, at work, in stores and other services, or even where people live. Trans people living in smaller towns or rural communities may even be more isolated.

4.1 Stereotyping

Many situations of discrimination happen because of negative attitudes, biases and stereotypes about people who are trans or gender non-conforming. Stereotyping is when assumptions are made about individuals based on assumptions about qualities and characteristics of the group they belong to. [13]  When people stereotype others, they do not see the real person. Stereotypes are often unfounded generalizations that come from misconceptions and incomplete or false information about people. Anyone can stereotype and not even realize it, even those who are well meaning.

There are widespread stereotypes about trans people in society that often go unquestioned. These include wrong ideas that trans people are “abnormal” or “unnatural,” that they are “frauds,” deceptive and or misrepresent themselves. They may be seen as more likely to take part in criminal activity, be pedophiles, or have mental health problems. Some believe trans women to be a threat to other women. [14]

Anyone who engages in illegal activity including threatening or harassing behavior or assault should be dealt with accordingly under the law. This should not detract in any way from the rights of trans people.

False and harmful stereotypes are rooted in fear and uninformed attitudes and can lead to discrimination against trans people because of their gender identity or expression.

4.2 Transphobia

”Transphobia” is the aversion to, fear or hatred of trans people and communities. Like other prejudices, it is based on stereotypes that are used to justify discrimination, harassment and violence toward trans people.

Many trans Ontarians experience transphobia according to the Ontario-based Trans PULSE survey:

• 98% of trans Ontarians reported at least one experience of transphobia
• Nearly 75% of trans people have been made fun of for being trans
• Over 25% have experienced physical violence because they were trans
• Nearly 25% reported being harassed by police
• Trans women experience transphobia more often than trans men. [15]

4.3 Cisnormativity

“Cisnormativity” (“cis” meaning “the same as”) refers to the commonplace assumption that all people are “cisgender” (not trans). In other words, their gender identity is in line with or “matches” the sex they were assigned at birth, and everyone accepts this as “the norm.”

The term is used to describe stereotypes, negative attitudes and prejudice towards trans people that are more widespread or systemic in society and its institutions. This form of prejudice may even be unintentional and unrecognized by the person or organization responsible, making it all the more entrenched and difficult to address.

“Cisnormative assumptions are so prevalent that they are difficult at first to even recognize… Cisnormativity disallows the possibility of trans existence or trans visibility. As such, the existence of an actual trans person within systems such as healthcare is too often unanticipated and produces a social emergency of sorts because both staff and systems are unprepared for this reality.” [16]

Society’s bias that there is only one right, normal or moral expression of gender underpins this form of prejudice and the discrimination that can result from it. Also see section 7.6 of this policy: Systemic discrimination.

One of the important aspects of a democratic society is the elimination of gender discrimination. The root cause of this vigorous disease is the stereotypical society itself. When a child is born, the discrimination begins; if the child is male, he is given a car, bat and ball with blue, and red colour clothes, whereas when a child is female, she is given barbie dolls with pink clothes. We all are raised with a mentality that boys are good at sports and messy, but girls are not good at sports and are well organised. This discriminatory mentality has a deeper impact when girls are told not to work while boys are allowed to do much work. This categorising males and females into different categories discriminating based on gender are known as gender discrimination. Further, this discriminatory behaviour in society leads to hatred, injustice and much more. This gender discrimination is evident in every woman’s life at the workplace, in educational institutions, in sports, etc., where young girls and women are deprived of their rights and undervalued. This major issue prevailing in society can be solved only by providing equality to women and giving them all rights as given to men.

Gender Discrimination, as the term signifies, is discrimination or discriminatory behaviour based on gender. The stereotypical mindset of people in the past has led to the discrimination that women face today. According to Kahle Wolfe, in 2015, women earned 83% of the income paid to men by working the same hours. Almost all women are not only discriminated against based on their salaries but also on their looks.

Further, most women are allowed to follow a certain dress code depending upon the work field and the dress women wear also decides their future career.

This dominant male society teaches males that women are weak and innocent. Thus women are mostly victims and are targeted in crimes. For example, In a large portion of the globe, women are blamed for rapes despite being victims because of their clothes. This society also portrays women as weaker and not eligible enough to take a stand for themselves, leading to the major destruction of women’s personalities as men are taught to let women down. This mindset of people nowadays is a major social justice issue leading to gender discrimination in society.

Further, gender-based discrimination is evident across the globe in a plethora of things, including sports, education, health and law. Every 1 out of 3 women in the world is abused in various forms at some point in their lives by men. This social evil is present in most parts of the world; in India, women are burnt to death if they are incapable of affording financial requirements; in Egypt, women are killed by society if they are sensed doing something unclean in or out of their families, whereas in South Africa baby girls are abandoned or killed as they are considered as burden for the family. Thus gender discrimination can be only eliminated from society by educating people about giving equal rights and respect to every gender.
