Engaging Parents in Digital Homework
Empowering parents to support their children is a key aspect of making sure digital homework is a success.
In many schools, educators are using connected devices to support personalized learning and collaboration. But when students are asked to use these devices for homework, new challenges arise. Parents often find themselves unprepared—or at least underprepared—for the new edtech landscape. After all, homework time already has its traditional, time-honored challenges. Layer on a digital component where kids may be tempted to use homework as a way to bargain for more connected device time, and parental anxiety is compounded.
Indeed, in my work with school districts, educators, parents, and students, one thing is consistent: Parents want to help, they just don’t know how.
If you assign (or plan to assign) digital homework, understanding these dynamics can help you A) prepare students to succeed, and B) inform and empower parents to support their children. Here are some best practices I’ve accumulated from my work with educators and families.
Ensure Equity of Access Before You Begin
First of all, research connectivity in your school’s community; homework should not compound inequity. Even in predominantly affluent communities, there may be households that can’t afford Wi-Fi, or choose not to have it. If your district has a 5 percent homeless rate, at least one of your students may be completing homework in a car or at a shelter.
Make sure there is an adequate workaround for these students. The public library can be a way to bridge the gap, but confirm that it’s actually accessible for the families who need it. I worked in one district where some families had neither internet access at home nor access to transportation. When in doubt, ask. Some districts now provide Wi-Fi to families and offer flexibility around homework due dates to ensure fairness.
Communicate Your Hopes and Expectations
One of the biggest and most common challenges of digital homework that parents report is that they they can’t tell if their kids are actually doing their work or using it as an excuse to goof off on the device. To help these parents, you can use a few different approaches.
- Be explicit to parents about what they can do to support their kids’ success. Do you want parents to monitor screen time? Be engaged in the work itself (e.g., a parent interview or other activity)? Do you want them to report back to you with any observations?
- Communicate clearly about expected homework time—to both students and parents. This will help prevent students from insisting to their parents that they need to stay up until all hours using a school device for homework.
- Be as transparent as you feel comfortable. Parental anxiety often comes from lack of information. The more they can see into your process, the more likely they are to actually partner and help you.
Educate Parents on Your Tech Toolset
When students start using a new app or platform to do their homework, parents often worry, “What if my kids ask me for help? Will I actually be able to help them?” Feeling lost is natural when faced with something new to learn. You can help ease their stress a little by bringing them into the process.
- Communicate the intended outcomes clearly to students and their parents. What are students supposed to be learning from a particular app? What is the process or path you expect students to follow?
- Frame the parameters for parents so they understand the expectations. Offer guidelines for how much time students should spend on a particular exercise within a particular app. Open the lines of communication so that parents can report back when their child is outside those expectations. This will help you identify problem points so you can make changes in the future.
- Teach them the app itself. Create and send a quick demo screenshare video, or assign students to demo the app to their parents as a part of their homework.
Familiarity goes a long way toward helping parents feel empowered and in control of managing their kids’ digital learning environment.
Keep Systems Simple—Especially Your LMS
If you have a learning management system (LMS), keep it simple and allow time for parents and students to use it. At almost every school, I’ve heard parents voice their frustration with accessing the LMS, frequent changes and/or updates to the LMS, or having to learn more than one LMS (for those parents with kids in different schools).
Keeping systems and implementation as simple as possible (while still achieving your teaching goals) will help parents and students feel more comfortable. You can assign students to run a training for their parents. Send them home with instructions to demo a particular feature and explain what it’s used for.
Remind Parents That They Have the Final Say
Often, it’s a simple lack of control that is the source of parents’ frustration. They feel that they are out of the loop or want to know, “What’s my kid actually doing on their device?” You can defuse this tension by simply handing control back to them.
Games are a frequent sticking point. While they’re a wonderful way for kids to practice skills, some parents report that kids have a hard time limiting their gameplay, even with assigned educational games. If this comes up with a game you’ve assigned, work with the students and the parents to create a schedule. Recognize that a subset of your students will find these transitions especially difficult and that you may need to offer flexibility to these families if the game is disruptive to family life.
Educators can empower parents to set up tech rules, even when the tech is provided by the school. Make sure that you inform students that this is the case too, so that you affirm the parents as the final word.

Transform worksheets into interactive online activities for students.
- October 1, 2020
This post is sponsored by TeacherMade. All opinions are my own.
How can you turn passive learning into a more active and interactive experience? More students are working online than ever before and more teachers are looking at ways to use classroom technology. There are lots of ways to rethink your traditional learning experiences. Today, I have a new tool to share with you that helps teachers create interactive online activities for students — from worksheets. It couldn’t come at a better time.
Although the term “worksheet” sometimes has a negative connotation, just like anything in a classroom, it’s all about how you use it. From graphic organizers and quick quizzes to creative writing projects, there are lots of possibilities. You might have a handful of PDFs you want to convert into interactive content for students this school year.
TeacherMade is a way to go beyond an editable PDF and take your worksheets to a whole new level. The folks at TeacherMade reached out to me this fall. I’m excited to tell you about their tool for creating interactive online activities for students!
Get started with TeacherMade (it’s free!) >>
Creating Interactive Online Activities
Ready to create interactive online activities? Looking to transform your worksheets? This blog post will take you through some common questions around creating interactive activities for students. You’ll see how the resources from TeacherMade work in virtual classrooms during distance or hybrid learning. And we’ll cover how to use them in face-to-face classrooms that are embracing a blended learning model.
How can I make interactive online activities?
With TeacherMade, you can easily upload any PDF, enhance it with over ten different question/tool types, and send it to students. (If you aren’t sure how to take a paper document and turn it into a PDF, you can use many apps to make it happen, including Google Drive and Dropbox.)
There are lots of ways to use these digital worksheets with students and you can find the full list of the app’s features here . With this tool, you have the opportunity to transform your favorite handouts into something more. Students use a rich toolbar, including highlighters and drawing tools, to respond to the task and show their work. They can add images, audio, video, and hyperlinks. This is an excellent opportunity to check for understanding at a distance and collect actionable data to inform future instruction.
Can I make a digital worksheet?
If you have either a PDF or paper version of a worksheet, TeacherMade will help you make it digital and interactive. That’s because it will load a PDF or an image so use your camera and take a photo if you need to.
Often the term worksheet is connected with busywork, but we know digital activities can be very robust when planned with purpose. With TeacherMade , you can make student response areas on the PDF and add images, audio, and video to enhance existing worksheet content.
You’ll also find options for auto-scoring by indicating correct responses and automatic feedback options. If students are adding longer, open-ended responses, don’t worry about running out of space; their response box turns to a scrollable window. As you start making interactive online activities for students, you might decide to share your creations with other teachers, and TeacherMade lets you do this, too.
How can I assign TeacherMade worksheets to Google Classroom?
TeacherMade has a Google link button in the Assignments area of the app. It will link right into your Google Classroom account where you can assign it to your class. Students just click on the link and get to work. TeacherMade has Google Classroom grade import almost ready for you — it should go live by the end of this month.
Regular readers of the blog know that I’m always looking for tools and strategies to make your life easier. The word “easy” is even in the name of my podcast . So I’m excited to see how this tool can save you time if you are making a quick shift to distance learning, and I love how it works alongside popular platforms like Google Classroom, too.
Free TeacherMade Accounts
The team at TeacherMade has lots of resources to support teachers who are ready to dive into their platform. These resources include a set of YouTube videos like the ones linked here. The app is friendly for lots of devices, and you can use Google single sign-on (that’s what I did for my account) or your email to set up an account.
TeacherMade is totally free for you to use! As you can see on this information page , they offer this free for teachers, and you can jump in right away. When you’re ready to get started, head over to TeacherMade’s landing page. They offer a community of support so you’ll always get the answers you’re looking for, often from other teachers, too. How to Use Digital Activities in the Classroom
Now that you have stocked up on digital resources and are back in person, or maybe still teaching digitally, you might be asking yourself.. how do I use these now? Here are my 10 favorite digital activity ideas for any elementary classroom.
DIGITAL IDEA 1: WARM UP
One easy way to use digital activities every day is for your warm up. This can be your daily warm up, morning routine, or a lesson warm up. I love using digital activities because it means NO COPIES, can be assigned in advanced and is a quick check in on how students are doing with a skill.
DIGITAL IDEA 2: WHOLE GROUP GAME
Display your digital activity to your whole class. Have students take turn answering questions, have them go to a corner of the room to pick what answer they think is correct or have them close their eyes and raise their hands for what answer they think is correct. Either way, this is a great way to have students practice multiple choice questions in the classroom.
DIGITAL IDEA 3 : INDEPENDENT CENTER
Students love using technology, but it is even more fun when they get to use a device. Using Google Slides or Boom Cards as centers is a great way to determine where students are in their individual learning process.
DIGITAL IDEA 4: HOMEWORK
Looking for a hassle free, copy free way to assign homework? Using Google Activities is great for homework, as long as students have access to devices at home.
DIGITAL IDEA 5 : TURN & TALK
Have students practice selecting the best answer choices by having them turn and talk to a partner about the best possible answer. This give students practice TALKING about their work, and allows them to run their ideas past another student before having to answer a question out loud or commit to an answer before they are feeling fully ready.
DIGITAL IDEA 6 : BUDDY WORK
Speaking of turn & talk, another great strategy for digital lessons is to let students work with a buddy to complete the assignment. This is especially helpful when students have not mastered a topic. It allows students to bounce ideas off one another and learn new strategies from each other.
DIGITAL IDEA 7 : TEST REVIEW
Digital activities are great for test review because you can assign students exactly what they need. For example, if some students need to practice word problems and others need to practice adding and subtracting to 100, you have plenty of options to assign them without the hassle of keeping track of copies and grading.
DIGITAL IDEA 8: Small Group
If you have a small group of students that all needs to focus on the same skill, a digital activity can be the perfect solution. Students can either work independently or as a group to complete the task. This can either be done with the guidance of an adult or independently and then can be checked by the teacher upon completion.
DIGITAL IDEA 9 : ENRICHMENT OR INTERVENTION
Are you looking for a way to catch up your struggling learners, or for a way to enrich your higher achieving students? Digital activities make great independent or small group activities that students can work on after completing or attempting the grade level activities.
DIGITAL IDEA 10 : FAST FINISHER CHOICE
Looking for a way to engage your fast finishers? Using digital activities is a great way to do so without having a ton of prep beforehand. You can assign multiple assignments for a week or month, then let them pick from what is there to practice. This gives them choice while also has them still practicing important skills.

Digital Homework
The Federal Communications Commission reports that about 65% of students used the internet at home to complete their homework and 70% of teachers assigned homework that required access to broadband. As technology becomes increasingly common in households, how can educators and parents harness technology to foster students' problem-solving skills?
Going Paperless but Not Effortless
“Alexa, what’s 5 minus 3?” A 6-year-old boy discreetly asked Amazon’s voice-activated assistant for the answer to his homework; he got a perfect answer right back, while his mother was busy doing household chores. This short video was posted on Twitter and received more than 8.5 million views.
National Public Radio introduced this case to raise awareness among parents and educators of the challenges posed by the pervasiveness of digital technology and artificial intelligence in everyday life. As technology is increasingly common in households, one pressing question for educators and parents alike is how technology-assisted homework can foster students’ problem-solving skills rather than crippling indolence.
Going Paperless
Technology makes our life easy — bills can be paperless; homework can be completed via the internet. Online homework is a major component of e-learning through network technologies. Previous research shows that most U.S. students in sixth grade and above have experience using computers and the internet to complete such “paperless” homework. As students advance in higher grades and education levels, the percentage of digital homework increases correspondingly.
There is no clear-cut definition of what digital homework is. It can be any assignment that students need to complete with the assistance of a computer, the internet, or other information and communication technologies (ICT). Although it would seem the opposite to the traditional homework that students complete with pen, pencil, and paper, it should be noted that, in a broad sense, digital homework includes homework that students write on paper but also requires using computer and/or internet assistance for its completion.
Data show that digital homework is growing in popularity in the 21st century. In 2009, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reported that about 65 percent of U.S. students used the internet at home to complete their homework, and approximately 70 percent of teachers assigned homework that required access to broadband. Surveys conducted by the nonprofit educational organization Speak Up in 2017 showed that nearly half of the students in grades six to 12 reported getting internet-based homework assignments daily or almost daily. About 90 percent of high-schoolers reported that they had to do internet-based homework at least a few times a month.
Advantages and Disadvantages
The transition from traditional homework to digital assignments offers both advantages and disadvantages. A 2014 study by researchers Marco Gui, Marina Micheli, and Brunella Fiore shows that students who used the internet moderately for homework performed higher academically than students who used the internet too often or infrequently for homework. Many factors can affect the learning outcomes that students are expected to achieve through digital homework, but critical thinking is always the key to success in using technology for learning.
Digital homework benefits students when educators and parents effectively guide students to maximize the use of ICT for learning. For instance, digital homework can increase students’ interest in doing homework, boost their efficiency in submitting assignments as well as teachers’ efficiency in providing feedback (if submitted online), and inspire students to learn more and more deeply by providing immediate feedback (if graded automatically).
Digital homework fosters and hones the skill of using ICT to solve problems, which is important for students’ postsecondary life. Research shows that people who can solve problems using ICT have higher chances of being employed, and even earn more than people without ICT experience. Meaningful digital homework encourages students to think through what they are learning and enriches their experience using ICT.
Parents and educators have legitimate concerns about digital homework. For elementary school students, the concern is that the use of hi-tech mechanization may hinder their cognitive development, such as memorization and sensory motor skills. For high school students, the worry is that students may largely depend on technology for their assignments rather than use their brains for the thought process.
Digital Divide
Educators also consider the digital divide a matter of big concern. In a 2016 nationwide survey (Speak Up, 2016), 49 percent of principals said that ensuring students’ access to technology outside the school was a major challenge, and 44 percent of teachers worried that they could not effectively integrate technology in the classroom because their students may not have access to consistent and safe internet outside the school. It should be noted that among the surveyed students:
- 48 percent went to school early or stayed late so they could use their school’s internet
- 32 percent would access the internet at fast food restaurants or cafes to do their homework
- 30 percent used their public library internet.
Digital homework should be effective in supporting students to master what they have learned and strengthening their problem-solving skills. The data of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP 2017) show that students who frequently used computers and the internet for math homework performed at much lower rates than students who never or rarely used digital devices for math assignments ( see chart). By contrast, students who received 45 minutes to an hour of math homework every day, regardless of whether digital or traditional, performed the best. The data suggest that persistent practice matters the most for math performance.
Age, grade and subject appropriateness are always the key to the use of technology in education. In sum, digital homework may go paperless, but should never be effortless.

Schools are increasingly incorporating digital technologies into their teaching practice, raising questions about whether these technologies actually enhance the learning process.
We’re particularly interested the role of technology in homework. Is homework – particularly in digitally aligned STEM areas such as mathematics – any different on a digital device? And, if not, should it be?
We have found that the range of educational websites and apps currently available fail to capitalise on the unique opportunities of digital technology. Working together, technologists and educators could design tools for digital homework that are interactive, instructive, and allow teachers to monitor their students’ progress – leading to better learning outcomes for all.
Read more: Technology in the classroom can improve primary mathematics
The (negligible) value of homework
Despite the prevalence of homework in many schools, the research community is still unsure whether homework actually provides a benefit for students . Recent research from CQUniversity indicates that homework for primary school students is of negligible value, and students are better served by spending this time engaged in structured play or improving their reading abilities.
Even for students in high school, the traditional write-and-check style of homework has shown very little benefit for students . After all, if you don’t know how to do a problem, then how is more practice going to help?
But shouldn’t the interactive and intelligent nature of digital devices make mathematics homework more beneficial for students?
More than a practice problem book
We started reviewing different educational sites and apps addressing mathematics and found they fell into three groups:
- traditional tutorials
- minimally digital tutorials
- digitally enhanced tutorials.
The more traditionally designed online maths tutorials, such as Basic Mathematics and Ezy Math Tutoring , provide a decent amount of depth in their instructions, but they lack a proper curriculum, and any sort of video tutorial or feedback mechanism.
The minimally digital tutorials, such as Study Ladder and Mathletics , have a well-designed curriculum, but lack quality tutorial videos and feedback on the work students do.
The digitally enhanced, such as Khan Academy and Maths Online , provide a well-designed curriculum for any age or grade level, comprehensive instructions, videos, and feedback on student work. They still, however, lack any sort of tutorial prompts during the quizzes.
Enhancing the ‘e’ in e-homework
As you can see, even the best mathematics technologies are not really technological at all – apart from the fact that students use them on a computer or a pad. All the different websites or apps aimed at helping student in mathematics are missing the technological components of technology.
The tools are not interactive. Questions do not increase or decrease in difficulty based on the student’s response to the last question. It would be useful if the practice questions students worked on intuitively increased in difficulty based on the success the student has on the previous question.
Read more: Why digital apps can be good gifts for young family members
None of the tools provide instructive cues to remind students of steps and procedures. And they don’t provide cognitive scaffolding when students are struggling, such as instant instructional advice if a student misses a question.
The tools also fail to provide teachers with data collected about the reason for errors. If they did, teachers could create a learning analysis overviews and specialised learning programs for each student they teach.
It’s clear we need better digital design in our education apps, and particularly those used without a teacher present. But how do we do that?
Bringing educators and technologists together
What need to establish a closer connection between the technologists and the educators.
The tech people need help designing the technology, and they need to design more than just the textbook as an app. Educators can help technologists envision what instruction could look like if the digital device had to do the teaching (and not just the practice) – and then build apps and sites that are innovative and interactive.
Read more: Online learning can prepare students for a fast-changing future – wherever they are
Educators also need to learn from the technologists so they can maximise the use of the devices in their classes. Many educators lack training to use the technological devices to their full potential.
Finally, digital technology designers must consult with educational psychology specialists who provide training for teachers.
We need new technology that isn’t just a copy of educational tools that already exist. Only then will we see the benefits of true digital homework.

I’ve done a lot of talking and little “showing”. Check out these 20 digital lesson plans using interactive worksheets for students. Our primary focus was to take your paper handouts with - for example, diagrams, forms, drawing exercises, and more - and show you how to make them digital. You’re probably also wondering why digitizing your handouts benefits you and your students. Well, auto-grading is undoubtedly already one significant advantage of online worksheets. I’ll talk about more benefits here .
As some of the educational resources for students are ready-to-use, some of them are very sensitive to a particular course. Take a look, even if you don’t teach that course. They will inspire you to create your own innovative worksheets. All examples are customizable digital worksheets and you can find them in this BookWidgets folder . Remember to duplicate them to make changes and share them with your students.
1. Quiz with diagrams
Let’s begin with a quiz demonstrating using interactive diagrams in school. This example will show different ways to use the “ Annotate Picture ” question type in a BookWidgets quiz. You can ask your students to label specific parts of the picture. Another option is to place an input field on a blank space in the picture or to hide an answer so your students can fill in the correct answer. Trust me, it sounds more complicated than it actually is. 😉
2. Parts of the fish: drag & drop
3. Facebook page
You want your students to present themselves at the beginning of the new school year. And as social media meets your students’ interests, you can combine these important first-day-of-school questions with a class about social media channels. For example, what do you think about creating a fake Facebook profile? Luckily for you, I have already built one 🍀. While completing this form, your students will think about these questions. Afterward, they submit it to you.
To make it more fun, you can pick out a few profiles and read what is on the profile. You will do this without saying the names so that other students can guess to who the profile belongs. The example is a worksheet widget using various question types:
- A “ Photo ” question so your students can upload a profile picture
- An “ Audio recording ” question so students can record their voices with their names. You now also know how to pronounce it!
- An “ Annotate picture ” question so students can fill out their interests, hobbies, sports, and more
- A “ Picture drag and drop ” question so students can drag an emoji to indicate their feelings.
4. Three stars and a wish
This is a worksheet example to check if your students understood the lesson they just got. They have to write down 3 things they know well and one thing they wish help for. Make sure to help the students who wish for help 🌟. The background you see was made with Google Slides. You can use other free tools like adobe Express or Canva . 😎 Go to the preview of your worksheet widget to address more design options so everything matches perfectly.
5. Popcorn entry ticket
Continuing your previous lesson or starting a new topic? Ask your students to fill in a word in every popcorn of this widget 🍿 at the beginning of your new lesson. Of course, not just a word 😉 it has to be a word that they associate with the previous lesson. It’s a fun opener for your class; your students will activate prior knowledge, remembering it better later. When students turn in their work, you have all the information in one place in the BookWidgets reporting dashboard. From there, you can see your students’ thoughts. You can use their replies to start your class or explain/highlight essential gaps in their answers.
This is a Worksheet widget with an “ Annotate picture ” question . 💡 Pro tip: We made the input field invisible so the popcorn drawing stands out.
6. Exit in 3, 2, 1
Digitizing exit tickets is pretty easy to do. Here’s another example created with a Worksheet widget using an “ Annotate picture ” question . Use this digital exit ticket to encourage your students to think about the lesson they just got. Let them name 3 things they just learned, 2 things they want to learn more about, and 1 question for the teacher about the lesson 💻. Once everyone submits their answer, you can go over the questions together.
7. Tops - Tips - Evaluation form
This widget can be used in various ways in your classroom 🏫. You can let your students fill in this form to do a self-evaluation, for example, about their presentation. They will have to reflect on their performance, identifying strengths and areas for improvement. An alternative approach is to use it when you, as a teacher, embark on trying something new. Encourage your students to express their opinions openly. They can share their thoughts on what aspects they enjoyed or suggest potential improvements. Once they have submitted their feedback, take the time to review and utilize their insights.
8. Animals on a map
This example shows you the “ Image Drag & Drop ” question type . Your students can easily demonstrate their knowledge by placing the animals in their respective areas on the map. Let them do the assignment individually, or you can have them do it together. Visual learning helps your students to remember the lessons better.
9. Digital classroom rules form
Each teacher thinks differently about classroom rules. This also applies to your students. Ask your students to fill in this form so you understand their thoughts better 💭. Which rules do they agree on and which rules don’t they agree on, or which rules are the most important? If everyone fills out this form, you can make a final version of the class rules and share it with your students. We used a variety of questions in this form:
- A “ Word ordering ” question so students can order the classroom rules from important to less important
- A “ Question table ” so students can indicate/ scale the provided classroom rules and statements
- A “ Single-line text question ” so students can provide suggestions.
10. Say it with emojis
Do you need a fun lesson starter for the first day of school? This worksheet widget is an excellent example of one of the many fun things you can create with BookWidgets. Ask your students to choose emojis to indicate their interests and other aspects of their life. This exercise uses “ Text Drag & Drop ” question type to promote active learning ( emojis are text-based, even though they show an image ). Once they’ve all sent their answers, you can ask your students to present themselves with the help of the emojis they picked 😎.
11. Two truths, one lie
Two truths, one lie is a fun digital introduction or energizer game you can play with your class. Every student writes down 3 facts about their life. Two of them should be true, and one should be a lie. When they are finished, they submit them to you. As a teacher, you will read the two truths and one lie out loud. Don’t mention the students’ names or what the lie is. The students can now try to guess the lie and the student’s name. You can do all of them in one class, or you can do one in every lesson during the last 5 minutes. The lesson example below shows a Worksheet widget with “ open-ended ” questions .
12. Change the world
We all have things we want to change about the world 🌎. Use the digital worksheet below to start a conversation with your students. Let them write down what they want to change and submit it. Now you can pick one and read it out loud. Ask the student who wrote it why they want to change that particular thing about the world and ask other students about their opinion.
13. Moon cycle
There is nothing more beautiful than the moon 🌕! In this widget, your students can discover the moon cycle. Let them try to drag and drop each picture at the right spot. If your students click the button, they see the correct answers. You can change the settings so that your students only get to see which answers were wrong without sharing the correct answer immediately. Because there is no better learning method than trial and error 😉. This, too, is a Worksheet widget, using the “ Picture drag and drop ” question.
14. World honey bee day worksheet
Learn more about the honey bees 🍯🐝! This is an educational worksheet about bees. Let your students discover more about the honey bee’s home, family, anatomy, and pollination. Because we used different questions, it is a good way for your students to get familiar with BookWidgets if they haven’t used it yet. Here’s a short overview of the used question types:
- “ Text ” questions to give information - add multimedia like video, images, audio, and more.
- A “ Drag words in a sentence ” question so students can show understanding about what they just have learned.
- A “ Text drag and drop ” question so students can separate facts from opinions.
- An “ Annotate picture ” question so students can name the different parts of the bee.
- A “ Photo ” question so students can take a picture of a plant a bee might like.
15. Baking a cake - Digital shopping cart
Ready to do some shopping? What do we need to bake a cake 🍰? This example is perfect for students just learning to read and understand words. At the top, you can write down the ingredients like in the example, and the students can drag the image of that word into the shopping cart. The “ Image drag and drop ” question type is perfect to use with younger students. Instead of writing down the ingredients (like in the example), you can just name them using speech. Here’s another fun digital lesson plan for kinderkarten . Toddlers need to count the image and drag the number to the right image.
16. Process flow of a lamp
You can use an “ Annotate picture ” question for students to fill out diagrams or complete process flows. It’s an excellent way to check if your students understood your lesson. I’ve made a simple example of a lamp to show you how it works. You can choose which parts your students must complete so you can adjust this question type to your lesson. It is possible to provide the correct answer to use the automatic evaluation. This will save you time! 😊 diagrams for process flow.
17. Learning another language
Did your students just learn some new vocabulary? With this exercise, you can check their understanding. In this example, I have indicated the words in the picture, and students must give the correct French word. I used an “ Annotate picture ” question for this language learning worksheet. Use this for all your language lessons. You just need a good image that represents the new vocabulary.
18. Digital sorting activities
Teach your students about fruits and vegetables. This interactive image drag-and-drop exercise will captivate your students’ attention as they categorize images into either fruits or vegetables. This engaging activity enhances their ability to identify and differentiate between various images - or fruits and vegetables.
Using the “ Image drag and drop ” question , you can even add more categories. It can be used in any type of course you teach!
19. The four seasons
Wrap up your lesson with this engaging exercise that reinforces your student’s understanding of the four seasons! What do your students still remember? In this exercise, I want to test their knowledge by having them identify each season with the correct picture 🖼️. Then, I’ll challenge them to match the unique features of each season through a drag-and-drop activity. I used an “ Annotate picture ” question ( with a nice dropdown list to make it easier for students ) and a “ Text drag and drop ” question.
20. Name the body parts
This exercise encourages active engagement and knowledge retention as students are prompted to identify and label specific body parts on an image. By requiring students to recall and apply their understanding actively, this activity enhances their learning experience and reinforces their knowledge. 📚 By now, you’re already an expert in the field, so you should know what question type this is. 👀
Digitizing your paper handouts comes with many benefits. I’ll mention 5 of them below. This will get you thinking about getting started. Don’t worry; you don’t need to digitize your handouts all at once. Start with homework and small in-class activities. Later on, you can even digitize your tests and exams!
1. Digital worksheets come with auto-grading and statistics
2. Digital worksheets come with multimedia
3. Digital worksheets come with personalized feedback
4. Digital worksheets come with accessibility
5. Digital worksheets come with interactivity
You can see all the possibilities of creating interactive worksheets with BookWidgets. Below, I have some more tips on costumizing your digital worksheet. These tips will help you build the best digital worksheet you’ve ever made! Let’s start with a huge time-saver tip when you’re transforming your paper handouts 👇
1. Import questions from existing paper handouts
2. Cover fields
Are you wondering how to configure the “ Annotate picture ” question in BookWidgets? With this question, students can name the indicated parts on an image. You can cover fields on an image so students don’t see the correct answer already. When they complete the assignment, they will see a blank space to fill in. You can create this question when choosing a quiz, worksheet, or split worksheet widget. Check out this video to learn how.
3. Fixed image resize
I know how frustrating having pictures of varying heights can be. That’s why BookWidgets developed a solution for our “ Picture Drag & Drop ” question that allows you to maintain a fixed image size. When you add a question, you’ll also notice image options. You can decide whether to resize your images by clicking on this. To take advantage of this helpful feature, simply select ‘yes,’ and you can choose a height to resize all your pictures at once. You can watch our instructional video to understand the process better if you prefer a visual demonstration.
4. Make a background with Canva
I used Canva to create background images in some examples. You can use one of the many templates from Canva or start from scratch. It’s not hard to use, but the easiest way to learn Canva is to play around with it 😉. If you know your way around other tools, you can also use those. When you’re using an “ Annotate picture ” question , you just have to remember to create a placeholder for the text. Most of the time, I just use shapes (like rounded rectangles). The two other design principles for my activities are text and icons. The noun project is the best icon website out there!
Pro Tip 💡: Even though BookWidgets’ focus is to create digital worksheets, they are also printable worksheets. So, when you create a nice worksheet with the “ Annotate picture ” question and have a good looking background, you can navigate to “ Preview ” and hit the “ Print ” button. Remember, you can’t use all question types when you want to print your digital worksheet. Adding multimedia and interactive elements to your worksheet makes no sense anymore.
5. Whiteboard widget
Create a background and add it to the BookWidgets whiteboard widget. This is a great way to work when your students have a tablet or a touch device. Students can draw on the whiteboard. It’s also possible on the computer, but we all know that drawing on a computer is hard if you don’t have a good mouse or touchpad 😅.
Here are two examples of a whiteboard widget. The first one is a traffic light , it is a creative way for students to ask for help. And the second one is a mood meter , a subtle way to know what’s going on in your student’s minds.
After seeing all these digital activity ideas, I’m sure you got some inspiration. If you want to use any ready-to-use lesson activities, duplicate them into your BookWidgets account for free.

Revolutionize Your Practice: Exploring Digital Therapy Homework Resources
Enhancing therapy with digital homework resources.
In the realm of therapy, homework assignments play a vital role in reinforcing and extending the work done during sessions. Homework allows clients to actively engage with therapeutic concepts, practice new skills, and apply what they have learned to real-life situations. In recent years, the advent of digital therapy homework resources has revolutionized the way homework is assigned and completed.
The Importance of Homework in Therapy
Homework assignments serve as an invaluable tool for promoting progress and growth in therapy. They provide an opportunity for clients to continue their therapeutic journey outside of session time, allowing them to integrate new insights and skills into their daily lives. Homework assignments also help to establish a sense of continuity, enabling clients to maintain their therapeutic momentum between sessions.
By engaging in homework, clients gain a deeper understanding of themselves, enhance self-awareness, and develop practical strategies for managing challenges. Homework assignments can range from reflective exercises, journaling, and practicing new coping skills to applying problem-solving techniques in real-life scenarios. The benefits of homework extend beyond the therapy room, empowering clients to take an active role in their own healing and growth.
Introduction to Digital Therapy Homework Resources
Digital therapy homework resources have emerged as a valuable tool for therapists and clients alike. These resources leverage technology to provide convenient and accessible platforms for assigning, completing, and tracking homework assignments. Digital platforms offer a variety of features and functionalities that traditional paper-based methods cannot replicate.
One of the key advantages of digital therapy homework resources is their increased accessibility and convenience. With virtual platforms, clients can access their homework assignments anytime, anywhere, using their smartphones, tablets, or computers. This flexibility allows for greater engagement and consistency in completing assignments, leading to more effective therapy outcomes.
Digital resources also offer enhanced engagement and interactivity. Interactive exercises, multimedia content, and gamified elements can make homework assignments more engaging and enjoyable for clients. These features can increase motivation, encourage active participation, and create a more dynamic learning experience.
Furthermore, digital therapy homework resources provide a tailored and personalized approach to therapy. Therapists can customize assignments to meet the specific needs and goals of each individual client. With the ability to track progress and provide feedback in real-time, therapists can easily monitor client engagement and make adjustments as needed.
By embracing digital therapy homework resources, therapists can leverage technology to enhance the therapeutic process and create a more engaging and effective experience for their clients. In the following sections, we will explore different types of digital therapy homework resources, considerations for choosing the right resources, and strategies for integrating them into practice.
Benefits of Digital Therapy Homework Resources
Digital therapy homework resources offer several advantages over traditional paper-based methods. These resources revolutionize the way therapy is conducted by providing increased accessibility and convenience , enhanced engagement and interactivity , and a tailored and personalized approach to therapeutic homework.
Increased Accessibility and Convenience
Digital therapy homework resources break down geographical barriers and make therapy more accessible to individuals regardless of their location. With online platforms and mobile apps, clients can engage in therapy exercises and activities from the comfort of their own homes, at a time that suits them best. This flexibility allows for greater participation and adherence to therapy homework, leading to more effective outcomes.
The convenience offered by digital therapy homework resources extends to therapists as well. They can easily assign, track, and review homework assignments through a homework management system or a therapy homework planner . This streamlines the therapy process and enables therapists to provide timely feedback and support to their clients. These resources often include multimedia elements like videos, audio recordings, and interactive games, making the therapy homework more engaging and enjoyable.
By incorporating interactive elements, digital therapy homework resources can effectively capture the attention of individuals, especially those who may struggle with traditional pen-and-paper exercises. The interactive nature of these resources promotes a deeper understanding of the therapeutic concepts and enhances the learning experience.
Tailored and Personalized Approach
Digital therapy homework resources offer the ability to tailor therapy exercises and activities to the specific needs of each individual. With the use of technology, therapists can create personalized assignments that address the unique goals and challenges of their clients. These resources allow for flexibility in adapting therapy techniques, providing a more individualized approach to treatment.
Therapists can choose from a range of digital therapy homework resources, such as therapeutic homework worksheets , therapy apps , and virtual reality simulations , to design assignments that align with their therapeutic goals and approaches. The ability to customize the content and difficulty level of the assignments ensures that clients receive targeted interventions that are most relevant to their therapy journey.
By leveraging the benefits of digital therapy homework resources, therapists can enhance the effectiveness of their interventions and empower their clients to actively participate in their own healing process. These resources provide a convenient, engaging, and personalized approach to therapy homework, ultimately leading to better treatment outcomes.
Exploring Different Types of Digital Therapy Homework Resources
To enhance therapy outcomes, digital therapy homework resources offer a range of options for therapists and clients to engage in meaningful therapeutic activities outside of session time. Here, we explore three types of digital therapy homework resources: online worksheets and exercises , mobile apps for therapy homework , and virtual reality and digital simulations .
Online Worksheets and Exercises
Online worksheets and exercises provide a convenient and accessible way for clients to engage in therapeutic activities at their own pace. These resources can be in the form of interactive exercises, worksheets, or self-guided assignments that address specific therapeutic goals. Online platforms often offer a wide range of topics and exercises to suit various therapeutic approaches and client needs.
The advantage of online worksheets and exercises is the flexibility they provide. Clients can access these resources from anywhere, anytime, making it easy to integrate therapy into their daily lives. Therapists can also track client progress and provide feedback through these platforms, enhancing the therapeutic process. To access a range of online therapeutic resources, including worksheets and exercises, consider exploring a therapeutic homework portal or a homework management system .
Mobile Apps for Therapy Homework
Mobile apps for therapy homework have gained popularity due to their convenience and user-friendly interfaces. These apps often provide a range of features, such as goal tracking, reminders, and interactive exercises. Clients can access therapy-related content, complete assignments, and track their progress directly from their smartphones or tablets.
Mobile apps offer the advantage of portability, allowing clients to engage in therapy activities wherever they are. These apps can provide a sense of structure and organization, helping clients stay on track with their therapeutic goals. When considering mobile apps for therapy homework, it’s important to choose apps that align with therapeutic approaches and offer a user-friendly experience. For more information on therapy homework apps, explore our article on therapy homework app .
Virtual Reality and Digital Simulations
Virtual reality (VR) and digital simulations offer an immersive and interactive experience for therapeutic homework. These technologies allow clients to engage in realistic scenarios in a controlled and safe environment. VR can be particularly effective for exposure therapy, where clients can confront and manage their fears or anxieties in a virtual setting.
Digital simulations, on the other hand, can simulate real-life situations and provide clients with opportunities to practice and develop coping skills. These simulations can be tailored to specific therapeutic goals and can be an engaging and effective way for clients to apply what they have learned in therapy.
While VR and digital simulations offer unique advantages, they may require specialized equipment or software. Therapists interested in incorporating these resources into their practice should consider the accessibility and feasibility for their clients. For more information on virtual therapy assignments, check out our article on virtual therapy assignments .
By exploring different types of digital therapy homework resources, therapists can select the options that best align with their therapeutic goals and client needs. Whether utilizing online worksheets and exercises, mobile apps, or virtual reality and digital simulations, these resources have the potential to revolutionize therapy by providing clients with engaging and personalized therapeutic activities beyond the therapy session.
Considerations for Choosing Digital Therapy Homework Resources
When selecting digital therapy homework resources , it’s essential to consider various factors to ensure they align with your therapeutic goals and provide a positive user experience. Here are three key considerations to keep in mind:
Aligning with Therapeutic Goals and Approaches
The chosen digital therapy homework resources should align with your specific therapeutic goals and approaches. Consider the type of therapy you practice and the techniques you employ. Some resources may be better suited for cognitive-behavioral therapy, while others may align more with mindfulness-based approaches. By selecting resources that complement your therapeutic style, you can enhance the effectiveness of your interventions and help clients progress towards their goals.
User-Friendly Interface and Navigation
A user-friendly interface and intuitive navigation are crucial when choosing digital therapy homework resources. Clients should be able to easily access and navigate the platform or app without feeling overwhelmed or confused. Look for resources that offer clear instructions and a simple layout, allowing clients to focus on the therapeutic content rather than struggling with the technology. A seamless user experience can increase engagement and motivation to complete the assigned homework.
Data Privacy and Security
When utilizing digital resources, ensuring the privacy and security of client data is of utmost importance. Look for platforms or apps that prioritize data privacy and comply with relevant regulations, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) in the United States. It’s essential to choose resources that employ encryption and secure data storage methods. This helps maintain client confidentiality and builds trust in the therapeutic relationship.
Considering these factors when selecting digital therapy homework resources can contribute to a more effective and seamless integration of technology into your practice. Be sure to explore various options and platforms to find the resources that best meet your specific needs. For more information on therapeutic homework and related topics, you can visit our articles on therapeutic assignments and therapy homework planner .
Integrating Digital Therapy Homework Resources into Practice
When incorporating digital therapy homework resources into practice, it’s essential for therapists to guide and support their clients in utilizing these tools effectively. This section explores key considerations for integrating digital therapy homework resources, including educating clients on using digital resources , monitoring progress and providing feedback , and blending digital and in-person therapy .
Educating Clients on Using Digital Resources
As therapists introduce digital therapy homework resources to their clients, it’s crucial to provide clear and comprehensive instructions on how to navigate and utilize these tools. Clients may need guidance on accessing the resources, creating accounts, and understanding the functionalities available.
Therapists can explain the benefits of using digital resources, such as the ability to access therapeutic assignments conveniently at any time and from anywhere. It’s important to emphasize the relevance of completing homework assignments to reinforce progress and facilitate therapeutic growth. By incorporating digital resources, therapists can empower their clients to take an active role in their therapy journey.
Monitoring Progress and Providing Feedback
Digital therapy homework resources often come with built-in features that allow therapists to monitor their clients’ progress and provide feedback. These features may include progress tracking, data analysis, and automated reminders.
Therapists can use these tools to gain insights into their clients’ engagement and progress. By reviewing completed assignments and tracking patterns, therapists can tailor their approach to better meet their clients’ needs. Additionally, providing timely feedback on completed assignments through the digital platform fosters ongoing communication and enhances the therapeutic relationship.
Blending Digital and In-Person Therapy
While digital therapy homework resources offer numerous advantages, it’s important to strike a balance between digital and in-person therapy. Therapists should consider how these resources can complement face-to-face sessions rather than replace them entirely.
During in-person therapy sessions, therapists can discuss and review the progress made through the digital resources. This allows for deeper exploration of client experiences and facilitates the integration of insights gained from completing the homework assignments. By blending digital and in-person therapy, therapists can create a holistic treatment approach that maximizes the benefits of both modalities.
By educating clients on using digital resources, monitoring progress, and blending digital and in-person therapy, therapists can effectively integrate digital therapy homework resources into their practice. This integration enhances the therapeutic process, empowers clients to take an active role in their therapy journey, and facilitates meaningful progress towards their therapeutic goals.
