Earth Day Posters & Downloadables

Posters and downloadables by year.

This is a collection of illustrated posters in NASA's annual celebration of Earth Day. High resolution printable PDF files are available for download by clicking on each image.

This 2024 Earth Day poster is an ocean themed vertical 15x30 illustration created from NASA satellite cloud imagery overlaid on ocean data. The white cloud imagery wraps around shapes, defining three whales and a school of fish. Swirly cloud patterns, called Von Kármán Vortices, create the feeling of movement in the composition. The focal point is a cyclone in the upper third of the poster. At the center flies the recently launched PACE satellite. The ocean imagery – composed of blues, aquas, and greens – is filled with subtle color changes and undulating patterns created by churning sediment, organic matter and phytoplankton.

Earth Day Art Projects

Description

I have many fun and easy Earth Day art projects you can do in your classroom. I’ve rounded them all up in this one post so you can see them easily. Many involve using reused materials and are excellent community projects for your class. I hope you enjoy them!

These projects are lovely in the art room, but my goal is to bring art integration to classroom teachers and empower them to succeed with the arts. Parents enjoy these ideas as well. I hope you find a fun idea you can use this year for your Earth Day celebrations or for any time of the year!

Water Bottle Fish

Use your recycled water bottles and let kids make fish out of them. Using simple materials like tissue paper and glue, kids will enjoy a new perspective on an everyday object.

Cereal Box Shoes

Recycled cereal boxes have a ton of great uses, and here, the kids can use all the beautiful colors and shapes found on the boxes in combination with their imaginations to become the designer of a fun, unique pair of (cereal box) shoes.

Interactive Coloring Sheets

We all know how much kids love to color. However, when completed, coloring sheets usually look pretty similar to one another. Kids all want blue skies and green grass (well, don’t we all?), but I have created interactive coloring sheets. This means the kids decide on all the important stuff, like the final designs, the patterns, and the colors. This year, included with my Earth Day interactive coloring sheets are also pattern-filled sheets so that little kids (who might struggle too much with adding in the patterns) can enjoy these activity sheets and prepare for when they can design them on their own.

I’ve used my interactive coloring sheets many times during the brainstorming and planning phases of an art project. Kids can practice their ideas and play around with the shapes and colors before committing them to the “good” paper or using paints. They always appreciate this. Of course, the plan always looks great as finished artwork!

Earth Day Agamograph

To read about my newest idea for Earth Day are Agamographs made easy. The image changes when you walk from one side of the Agamograph to the other. I have created two designs. The first is an image of the Earth that morphs into a recycling symbol, and the other is an image of raindrops that morph into a tree!

Recycled Crayons

You know I’m all about making you look awesome(er) to your kids, right? What better way to do this than to make your own crayons?! I mean, honestly, they will think this is très cool (because it is)! Use up all your old broken crayons and make new fun shapes by melting the wax and pouring it into candy molds. This post has a video, so you can easily see how to make these crayons.

Collaboration Earth Day Poster

It’s fun to decorate your classroom with posters for Earth Day, but if you involve the kids in the process, it’s even MORE fun (for them!) I create collaborative posters for all kinds of occasions. Still, I think Earth Day is particularly remarkable because it encompasses how important it is for everyone to do their part to achieve the desired outcome. Each student must participate and help out with these posters, or else the poster won’t look right with a missing or messed up piece. It’s a powerful message that you hardly have to tell them. They really “get” it all on their own! Keep the poster a surprise until you put it together, and you’ll really make them happy. This resource has two Earth Day poster designs.

Bottle Top State Flag

Speaking of collaboration, this is the mother of all collaboration projects. Using recycled bottle tops, create your state flag (or perhaps an Earth Day image) to display in your community. It’s easier than it looks, and it involves everyone in one way or another.

Earth Day Table Posters

My Earth Day Table Posters are small posters (or big coloring pages) that you spread out on a table and have small groups of kids work on together! They are immediately engaging, lead to great discussion and cooperation, and, most of all, they are fun! I enjoy listening to my students talk about who will color which section and what colors they will use. It is a great, calm way to begin or to facilitate any Earth Day discussions you’d like to have with your students. A bonus of these table posters is that when the kids are through, you have a set of beautiful images with which you can adorn your classroom door, bulletin boards, and more!

Earth Day Activities

I hope you found something in this Earth Day round-up that you can use now or pin for later. Thanks for reading, visiting my site, and, most of all, for making art with your kids! There are always so many ways to use the arts to excite and educate your children.

Earth Day activities to inspire your students and make a difference

Earth Day activities to inspire your students and make real change

Earth Day is about raising awareness about the importance of protecting our planet and taking action. The first Earth Day came about after a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson, saw the devastating impact of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Not willing to sit on the sidelines anymore, Senator Nelson organized a national “teach in” to educate and inspire people to protect the environment.

Since the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, it has generated public support for the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as environmental laws such as the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, and the Endangered Species Act.

Here’s a quick (3-minute) introduction to how Earth Day started and the impact it’s had:

Earth Day 2022

Earth Day will be held April 22, 2022 and the theme is Invest In Our Planet —because a green future is a prosperous future.

Just in time to support Earth Day this year, PLT has released a new, cutting-edge resource for elementary and middle school educators, Explore Your Environment: K-8 Activity Guide . Learn about the guide’s 50 field-tested, hands-on activities and get a copy directly from PLT’s Shop or by attending a local PLT professional development workshop conducted by PLT’s 50-state network of 75 coordinators and 1,000 facilitators across the country.

Another way teachers and parents can observe Earth Day is to simply take children on a nature walk, whether that’s in your backyard, at a local park, on a nearby forest trail, or on school grounds, depending on what’s accessible in your area at this time. Doing a nature walk is not only about celebrating Earth Day. It’s also an opportunity for learning experiences in a variety of subjects such as science, geography, math, and art. Make your nature walk educational and fun at the same time with these 12 Nature Walk Activities for Earth Day (or Any Day!)

Also, be sure to bookmark our Earth Day News Article full of fun ideas and activities to help you celebrate.

Even though Earth Day has a rich history, many people associate it with recycling. You’ll probably find a lot of Earth Day activities for the classroom that focus on just that. This can be a great starting point, especially because it’s an action students, schools, and families can do right away. If you want to incorporate activities on recycling in your Earth Day lesson plan, be sure to check out these reduce, reuse, recycle lesson plan ideas for every subject .

Young students can, and do, make a big difference. As an educator, you have the opportunity to spark a passion in students that will drive them to do their part to take care of the Earth. Here are a few different kinds of activities you could add to your lesson plans to inspire your students this Earth Day:

Make a pledge and a plan to take action

Writing down a commitment and making a plan are two actions that increase the likelihood that someone will follow through. So if you want those Earth Day lessons to stick, this is an easy activity to do with students of any age. This is a great way to incorporate an art project with a writing prompt.

Here are a few examples:

Integrate art projects

Art projects are fun way to add a hands-on activity to a lesson about Earth Day. Creating art can also help students feel connected to environmental topics, even if the issues you’re studying are happening far away from home. It’s also a great way to help them imagine the world they want to live in.

Here are a few examples of art projects for Earth Day:

Also, be sure to check out these art project ideas using recycled materials and Earth Day art activities .

Make signs for school and at home

Sometimes we just need a little reminder to help us change our habits. Have students think about what they can do at school and at home to help the environment and how they can encourage others to change their habits.

Make a video or presentation urging others to take action

Students can make a bigger impact if they influence others to do their part to protect the environment. Putting together a video or presentation also helps them internalize the material – they need to understand it before they can explain it to others. Presentations can be given in the classroom or even to the whole school. Eventually, they may be able to present their lessons and research at a local conference, like these students from Two Rivers Magnet Middle School in East Hartford, Conn.

Plant a tree

The Earth Day Network has a goal of planting 7.8 billion trees by 2020 – one tree for every person alive. By planting trees, you’re taking a tangible action with your students and you’re taking part in this bigger goal. Don’t forget to check out these tree planting tips before you get started.

Engage students in a pollution experiment

Teaching about pollution is an essential part of Earth Day because it helps students understand the consequences of not protecting the Earth. It can be much easier to prevent pollution than to remedy it later. Students can experience the effects of pollution on a small scale in the classroom.

An activity for younger students:

See more types of pollution experiments you can do in your classroom and check out PLT’s “Pollution Search” activity .

Pick up trash around your school

Trash clean-ups are another hands-on activity you don’t even have to leave the school grounds to do. To make a bigger impact, have students write down what kinds of trash they pick up and where. After analyzing the data together, you can find patterns and explore solutions so you can stop the trash at the source.

In fact, there’s a new app that can help you do just that. Check out Litterati , the app that makes it fun to pick up littler and helps prevent litter:

Host a drive to collect e-waste

E-waste is a growing problem in the U.S. and around the world. E-waste represents more than 70% of toxic waste in landfills. So it’s probably not surprising that only 12.5% of e-waste is recycled.

This is an opportunity for your students to help raise awareness about this problem within our school and community. Students can research a nearby recycling facility and organize a drive to collect e-waste to help combat this problem in your community.

Show them examples of other students making a real difference

It’s important for students to see examples of young environmentalists so they know they don’t need to wait until they’re older to make a difference. These inspiring examples of young environmentalists is a great place to start, and there are many more young people doing great work. Learning about the work these young people are doing can give your students new ideas for how to protect the environment. It can open the door of possibilities for how to think about finding solutions to problems they can help solve.

Earth Day isn’t just on April 22. It’s every day. How will you celebrate Earth Day and help students make a difference year-round?

Earth day posters that pop.

earth day poster assignment

Objective: Transform a photo of your hand into a piece of art that shares what you are learning about Earth Day with others.

Building knowledge: With teacher guidance and content materials, students will explore the meaning of Earth Day and ways they can help keep the earth clean and sustainable in their daily lives. Using video, text, and personal knowledge, students will discuss the Three R’s and how reducing, recycling, and reusing can help keep our earth clean.

monotone photo of a hand and the beginning of a blue sky background drawn with a blue highlighter

Design Process: Students work together using the camera app on their iPad to take SQUARE photos of their open hands with a plain background. Using pieces of bulletin board paper worked great for team photo opportunities. Using the SQUARE photo setting gives younger students less background to color which can help in completing this project in a timely manner.

Students tap on the photo of their hand and tap edit. Use filters to change to MONO. Then tap on the pencil tool circle to open up the Markup tool pallet. Tap on the highlighter tool, choose the thickness and color to create the background sky. Then use a finger or stylus to trace around the hand and fill in the background of the photo with the sky color.

photo of how to use the crayon tool to outline the monotone hand in the photo to make it pop.

Students can use two fingers to zoom into their photo as they are tracing, coloring, and designing their objects for this project. Tap on the crayon tool. Choose a size and the color white to trace an outline around the hand to make it pop off the background color.

photo to show how to use the markup tools to draw a globe on a hand

Tap on the shape tool to add a circle and change the color to a shade of blue that will represent the oceans of the earth. Tap on the marker or crayon tool. Choose the size and color to draw in the land on the globe.   Use the marker tool to add words to create an image that will help viewers remember to Recycle, Reuse, and Reduce to help the earth.

photo to show how to use the marker tool to zoom into the hand and write words about earth day

Sharing with an authentic audience: Students can project completed projects on the class TV to share their creations with peers. Teachers can compile completed photos into a video using iMovie to share with students and families on school based communication platforms.

Project extensions: This project could extend to other areas of social emotional posters such as ways to be a good friend, ways to be kind to others, how to lend a helping hand, and more. You could use different parts of the body to create a poster for “The Best Part of Me” with words to describe things that students like to do and qualities that they like about themselves. The opportunity for creativity with Pop Art using just a photo and Markup are limitless.

I would love to hear more ways you might integrate Pop Art with Markup into your content subjects. Do you think your students would enjoy creating with this type of project? Let me know in the comments below.

Featured Document: First Earth Day Poster

By Victoria Macchi | National Archives News

refer to caption

For the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the National Archives is featuring this poster by artist Robert Rauschenberg. (National Archives, Records of the U.S. Information Agency)

WASHINGTON, April 22, 2020 — For the inaugural Earth Day 50 years ago, artist Robert Rauschenberg designed a poster built around the image of a bald eagle. Flanking the U.S. national bird, however, was a collection of photographs: endangered animals, deforestation, and land, water, and air pollution. A stark sign on what looks like an open plain says “Danger: KEEP OUT. Water contaminated.”

Working with the National Archives Still Picture team to find a document to feature for the milestone anniversary , museum curator Corinne Porter thought Rauschenberg’s eye-catching artistry would grab the public’s attention.

“It’s certainly a powerful image, and people’s feelings about environmental issues are also pretty powerful,” said Porter. “We hope that people who view the record and the exhibit online find it meaningful as we reflect on the 50 years since the first Earth Day.”

Rauschenberg, a painter and graphic artist, originally designed his iconic poster for the American Environment Foundation.

“He was a really well known artist, so that was exciting,” said Porter. “We have some notable artists who worked for or produced for the Federal Government, but I wasn’t expecting to see this.”

More than 20 million Americans participated in the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970.

The U.S. Information Agency—part of the U.S. State Department’s public diplomacy mechanism—would create exhibitions intended for an international audience. The agency made the reproduction of the original work in 1993; the National Archives subsequently became the custodian of the poster’s reproduction.

With the National Archives Museum closed in response to the coronavirus, this Featured Document is displayed online only at this time. The public can read more about this and other National Archives resources related to Environmental Studies on Archives.gov. Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

earth day poster assignment

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

earth day poster assignment

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

earth day poster assignment

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

earth day poster assignment

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

earth day poster assignment

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

earth day poster assignment

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

earth day poster assignment

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
