Our Local Market

We have a small market near our house it is our local market. Though it is not very big, one can buy almost everything there.

The marketplace is always crowded. The shops are mostly small in size. Some shops sell fruits and dairy products, some sell groceries, some sell fish, some sell utensils, some sell gift items and stationery. One can also find shops selling electronic goods. There are shops for repairing damaged things also.

In the middle of the market, there is a big medical store. It has all kinds of medicines available.

There is also a nice bakery shop just outside the market. It sells delicious cakes and cookies. I love to go to the market as my mother busy me goodies like candies and cakes.

My mother goes twice a week to the market to buy various things.

This local market has made our lives very easy as all day-to-day items are available at a comfortable distance. The shopkeepers are honest and sell quality products at reasonable prices.

The Market Scene In A Town

Essay No. 1

The market of may town is very important. There is no other place of grain market in the area of so much brisk business as this market is.

The market itself is in the centre of the town. All important bazaars of the town lead to this market. It has square shape. There is an open ground in the middle of the shops. There are shops on the four sides of the big square. The main shopkeepers are regents. Their trade is chiefly export and import of grains. There are a few shops which meet needs of the  people  who visit the market for purchase.

The crowd scene in the market is very interesting. It is a centre of attraction for both buyers and sellers. I always find a big crowd there. Businessmen come from far and wide. They transact business. The market is always crowded with carts, horses, donkeys and camels. They come loaded with the produce of the season such as cotton, grain, oil seeds, gur and vegetables. These things are arranged in an attractive manner for sale.

The merchants make  their purchases moving in groups. They bid in  a particular fashion. They do some indications udder the clothes to fix the rates of the commodities brought in the market for sale. The purchase of commodities  take place in the day. In the evening all commodities are packed in jute bags. They are sent back to places where they are in demand. The country carts, horses and donkeys go back with their masters to the villages. Nearly all the shops have telephones. The shopkeepers get news about the rates of markets through post and telephone. 

The market of my town is a very noisy place. Pretty hawkers with namkins of various kinds go about the market. They sell their articles by shouting their names at the top of their voice. Once can meet all sorts of people there. There is joy and laughter on all sides. Friends welcome one another. People discuss politics in the light of their business.

The market of my town is different from old markets. It is not dirty. It is swept and cleaned every day. There is no mud and bad smell. In the centre of the market there is a well. A trough is made near it. The animals drinks water at the trough. There is public bath for the labourers. In short our town market is worth a visit.

A market is a place where we buy vegetables, fruits, fish, fowls and meat. It is the biggest concentration of noise every morning. It is filled with a crows of mainly buyers.

The central market in Kuala Lumpur is not only a landmark  but is also one of the best attractions in the city. It is really an experience to go round the stalls during their busy hours. Business at the Central Market starts in the early hours of the day. Vans and Lorries bring loads of fish and meat to the vendors. Usually nonperishable things are brought overnight. But green vegetables are brought early in the morning. The smooth and efficient working of the market is really appreciable. 

This market is in a huge concrete building. The stalls are arranged in beautiful rows, they are also classified according to the goods they deal with. Fruits, vegetables, fish, fowls and meat; all have their respective dealers. Buyers and sellers haggle and haggle over prices. They push and jostle to get the best offer.

The market is under city authorities. So health inspectors are responsible for its cleanliness. They have to see that the foodstuffs that are sold are free from defects. Thus unscrupulous stall keepers and vendors are warned against selling rotten, unpalatable or poisonous food stuff.

There are many markets in Delhi. Chandni Chowk, Tilak Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Sarojini Nagar and Connaught Place are some of the big and famous markets.

I live in Karol Bagh. It has big market. The market of the colony is a very busy place. There are a large number of show rooms and shops.

I went to the market with my mother yesterday. We bought my school shoes and dress.

My mother also bought some bangles. There was a lot of noise in the market. People from all walks of life are seen shopping around.

Some shopkeepers do roaring business. Police keep watch on bad elements. I had a fruit chat. I love to go to the market.

The Promises and Problems of Buying Local

You can crisscross North Dakota from Fargo to Bismarck to Minot and never see a Walgreens, Rite-Aid or Walmart pharmacy. With narrow exceptions, a 1963 state law prohibits drugstores that aren’t majority-owned by a pharmacist. (CVS Health, whose predecessor company was already in the state in 1963, is grandfathered in.)

To “buy local” people, this is very heaven. Stacy Mitchell, a co-director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance in Portland, Maine, wrote to me that North Dakota is “the state with the most pharmacies per capita, the largest share of rural census tracts served by a pharmacy and, in its cities, the largest number of competing pharmacies.”

There are conflicting claims about whether the law has made prices higher or lower. What’s not in dispute is that the law is durable. It has withstood multiple challenges in court, repeal efforts in the state Legislative Assembly and even a statewide ballot initiative .

North Dakota, by the way, also has a public bank and a state-owned flour mill, both founded shortly after World War I, so it’s kind of different. Do North Dakotans know something about self-reliance that the rest of us don’t?

I’m about half persuaded. I’m also feeling a lot of overlap between this newsletter and the Friday one about airlines, which talked about major carriers pulling out of smaller cities, leaving them isolated.

The argument against “buy local” is that there are gains from trade. The theory is that prosperity is greatest when people, and countries, focus their efforts on what they’re best at and buy everything else from other people who also specialize. Taylor Swift should not try to play football for a living, and Travis Kelce shouldn’t try to sing. (Begging you, Travis.)

For the rest of this newsletter, I’m going to pit Stacy Mitchell, the apostle of self-reliance, against two University of Chicago economists, Chang-Tai Hsieh and Esteban Rossi-Hansberg, who wrote “The Industrial Revolution in Services,” a paper published digitally last year in The Journal of Political Economy Macroeconomics.

The Chicago economists presented evidence that customers benefit when a national chain in a service industry enters a market that has been served only by small, local operators. “The entry of top service firms into new local markets has led to substantial unmeasured productivity growth, particularly in small markets,” they wrote.

What about the claim that the national chains put the locals out of business, allowing the chains to monopolize the market? That’s not what typically happens, Hsieh told me in an interview. The locals do lose market share, but they don’t usually go out of business. The market share that the national chain obtains is usually smaller than the market share that the local operators had before it entered, he said.

According to Hsieh, McCaffrey’s Food Market was the only supermarket in Princeton, N.J., when he took a job at the university in 1998. Then Wegmans, a chain based in Rochester, N.Y., came to town. “On the opening day there was a line of people,” he said, resorting to anecdote rather than data to get his point across. “They wanted to be the first ones to get into the store.” Since then, Whole Foods has also opened a store in Princeton, and McCaffrey’s is still in business. Consumers, Hsieh said, are better off.

“When chains come to town, first of all, they bring the productivity that made them a successful chain in the first place,” Rossi-Hansberg said. They also bring variety, he said. “Now you can go to every town in America and have a macchiato.”

We also talked about hospital mergers, which have alarmed antitrust authorities. In big cities, big nonprofit hospital chains have been scooping up smaller independents. “What’s not mentioned frequently is that whenever they do this, what they also do is build networks of outpatient clinics that never existed,” Hsieh said.

Mitchell told me how much she likes to shop at locally owned establishments and small chains in Portland. She loves Maine Hardware, which calls itself “Proudly local, fiercely independent, wicked helpful.” The store is connected with Ace Hardware Corp., a buying cooperative that’s entirely owned by local retailers.

“The theory that when national companies spread to smaller cities and towns, they provide more competition in those local markets sounds good,” she wrote in a follow-up email. “But one can point to many past examples where the opposite was the case — ultimately leading to much less competition and community harms. The proliferation of national supermarket chains like Walmart and Kroger has left local grocery markets far more consolidated and less competitive, for example.”

Mitchell added: “Independent businesses can hold their own against national competitors — if there’s a level playing field. Meaning robust antitrust enforcement, an end to tax loopholes and subsidies that favor big business, access to capital and so on.”

Local ownership is also better for democracy, Mitchell said. She pointed me to the legislative history of the Celler-Kefauver Antimerger Act of 1950, which changed the test of illegality to outlaw a wider range of mergers. Estes Kefauver, a Democratic senator from Tennessee who cosponsored the law, warned that “central managers decide the policies and the fate of the far-flung enterprises they control. Millions of people depend helplessly on their judgment.”

Hsieh and Rossi-Hansberg also invoked democracy, but from a different perspective. “I think we should let people choose what they want,” Hsieh said. “If things are really better, I think it would be really dangerous for someone to say, ‘You cannot make that choice.’”

Hard to argue with that. As with the question of what to do about airlines, there are trade-offs. Self-reliance, price and variety are all relevant concerns; different people will weigh them differently. The challenge comes when one decision must be made for many, as in North Dakota. There may be cases in which banning or limiting competition from outside is the right choice, but the hurdle should be set high.

Essay On A Visit to Market

One day I accompanied my mother to our local market. She had gone to buy vegetables and groceries.

The market place was very crowded. There was hardly any space for us to move about. The place was very noisy. It was lovely to see the piles of vegetables and fruits in the market. My mother bought plenty of vegetables and also some fruits. I helped her to carry her shopping bag.

She then went to a grocer’s shop. She bought some groceries. There were many other shops besides the grocer’s shop. There were sweet-meat shops, flower sellers’ shops, shops selling utensils, crockery, cutlery and textiles. Several hawkers went about shouting their wares. They had combs, ribbons, buttons and sundry articles for sale.

In that big crowd there must have been some pickpockets. A lady’s purse was snatched away and she shouted to raise an alarm. People were running towards her, but nobody knew who was the thief. The poor lady lost her money. She could not do any shopping that day.

Cattle moved about in the market and tried to eat up the vegetables. The vendors drove them away and shouted at them. A lot of bargaining goes on in every market. The seller never tells the buyer the correct price of a thing. So the seller and the buyer go on bargaining until they arrive at a price suitable to both.

| enjoyed my visit to the market, particularly as my mother bought me some sweets. I munched my sweets happily on my way to home. I made up my mind to visit the market again when I got a chance to do so.

The presence of a small community will help you create buzz and further enhance the integrity of your brand in your space. This is all great for SEO too. In fact, if you rank high on Google amongst your local competitors then you’ll soon be first in mind with local customers. 

Local marketing is especially important if you have a brick and mortar business location or a service that is specific to your area. People need to know you exist and they need to know you’re the best business for what you do. If your business exists to serve your local community then it’s essential that you focus on this! But, we can’t stress enough how important it is for all businesses too. 

7 tips to get local marketing right

1. build your network locally and then scale up.

Local marketing is a great way to ‘test the waters’ and learn as you go. Rather than starting on a big national/global scale, get it right in your local community, learn fast, make tweaks and then scale up. Build loyal and solid relationships locally and carefully build momentum and credibility. This is also a fantastic way to start growing your brand and your reputation (your brand awareness strategy) alongside promoting your products or services.

But wait! How can you do this well?

  • Build links with local like minded businesses. They will recommend you to their customers and you can leverage off their brand presence. Maybe collaborate with them on an offer or an event? 
  • Make referrals and recommendations the norm! Encourage your staff to refer customers to nearby/like-minded businesses (not competitors!) and begin creating a referral network for yourself and other fab local businesses. Being in it together will be more powerful than not and this in turn will help promote and enhance the wider local business community.

  • Start a simple but smart retention campaign for your best customers e.g. loyalty discounts or refer a friend schemes. Email marketing is a fantastic and affordable way to do this in an engaging and easy way.
  • Embrace your local community in your store/office. Celebrate local life on your social media channels, have local literature in store and use local suppliers whenever possible. Supporting local businesses is now expected for many businesses. It will not only make you feel good but it’ll encourage support from other businesses too. Looking out for each other is both lovely and wholesome and beneficial for everyone involved!

2. Prioritise personal relationships 

When you are scaling up (and beyond!) it’s important to know your customers, partners and stakeholders and know them well. Get to know your neighbours, your suppliers, like-minded businesses and your most frequent customers. Don’t just say hello and a fleeting ‘you alright?’…really get to know them. Learn what makes them tick, what they’re passionate about and what winds them up. You can learn so much from these individuals and by becoming as personable as you can you’ll build up a reputation for being genuine, thoughtful and most importantly, memorable.

Make people feel good about themselves, make their day and know their name and the name of their dog. These details matter and people will want to work with you, purchase from you and shout about you to their network if you’ve made a memorable impression on them. Don’t ever take for granted how important these relationships are. 

3. Optimise for local SEO to boost your rankings

Local marketing is also a really great way to boost your business rankings on Google. This will not only help more local people know who you are and what you do, but it’ll mean your net may more likely reach an even wider audience too. There is an undoubtable rise in the support of local businesses since the pandemic. Data from the YouGov Covid-19 Tracker proves this point, with 62% of respondents saying that they will support local businesses or buy local produce post-pandemic . We encourage you to make the most of this!

Make sure your Google My Business account is up to date and regularly updated. This is a super easy and straightforward way to give your company more exposure.

It can be easy to dismiss more traditional types of marketing, especially when you’re trying your best to be modern and relevant to your audience. But, there is value in some of the more traditional local marketing tactics. So why not…

  • Get in touch with your local media outlets. They are way more powerful than you realise! Local PR can have many many benefits and be fantastic for brand awareness and lead generation.
  • Create a small postcard or business card (our favourite size is a7!) and distribute it in places where your typical customer might be e.g. shared working spaces, community centres and local cafes/venues. As usual, there was a lot of activity going on in the shops, and the hawkers seemed to be doing good business too. I bought some chilli powder and a tin of cooking oil from the grocery store, then went to the chemist’s shop to buy my father’s medicine.

Thinking that I would leave the purchase of eggs for the end, I walked into the sweet-seller’s shop where a wonderful, rich aroma assailed my nostrils. I could not resist buying some hot jalebis which I devoured greedily. Then, wiping my sticky hands on my skirt, I went to the dairy shop and bought a packet of milk and a dozen eggs. Putting them carefully in my bag I came out to find that a man had settled down on the ground with his wares displayed on a sheet. He begged me earnestly to buy something from his colourful assortment of handkerchiefs, ribbons, soap-dishes and packets of safety-pins. I admired his goods but said I would come another day.

Picking up my bicycle from the end of the road, where I had parked it along with a whole lot of others, I hung my shopping bag over the handle and cycled home. I returned the left-over change to my mother, who jokingly remarked that since I had eaten jalebis my stomach must be full, so she needn’t cook any dinner for me.

There is a fairly large space between the line for the buyers to move and buy.

Home Sellers Are Becoming ‘More Realistic’ During the Best Time of the Year To List

After years of heated bidding wars and homes selling for six figures over the list price, home sellers are entering the spring housing market with “more realistic” expectations.

As the nation enters the best week to list a home , April 14–20, fewer homeowners anticipate bidding wars and wild offers over the asking price, according to a recent survey from Realtor.com® and CensusWide. Homeowners are also expecting their homes will take longer to sell and fewer buyers will waive contingencies.

“Home sellers have adjusted their expectations. They’re becoming a little more realistic given the current market conditions,” says Hannah Jones , senior economic research analyst at Realtor.com. “Home prices and mortgage rates remain elevated, so buyers are going to be a little bit more picky and are going to be looking for more flexibility from sellers.”

While that’s welcome news for many homebuyers, it’s not necessarily a bad thing for sellers.

“The housing market is showing signs of rebalancing,” says Jones. She points out that more homes are going up for sale compared with last year. “The market is moving in the right direction.”

Just 12% of sellers expect their home will receive multiple offers, down from 27% last year. And 15% of homeowners are banking on being offered more than their asking price. That’s less than half of the 31% that expected to receive more than what their home was listed for in 2023.

An additional 15% are prepared to receive an offer within a week of their home going up for sale, down from 37% last year. And another 15% are expecting buyers to waive contingencies, such as home inspections and appraisals, dropping from 35% in the previous year.

“Seller expectations are moving away from the [COVID-19] pandemic frenzy toward more normal, pre-pandemic expectations,” says Jones. “It’s a return to some balance. Although sellers are still in a really good position, this suggests that sellers are open to a little more give and take with buyers.”

The report is based on a survey of about 1,000 homeowners who plan to sell their home in the next year and 1,000 folks who sold their home in the Past year.

What do home sellers in 2024 want?

Homeowners planning to sell their properties this year have been thinking about doing so for an average of two years. When they finally do so, they’re hoping to cash in.

Sellers are expecting their abodes to sell for an average of $462,000 this year. That might be a bit aspirational as the national median list price was $424,900 in March, according to the most recent Realtor.com data.

“The percentage of sellers reducing prices is relatively high,” says Jones. “So sellers may be optimistic coming into the market and then adjusting closer to buyer expectations.”

Almost 8 in 10 recent sellers believe they would have entered a hotter housing market if they had listed their properties earlier. Many waited to get out those “For Sale” signs because of the high mortgage rates.

About 73% of the respondents in the survey are sellers as well as buyers. About 79% of prospective sellers have been reluctant to give up a low rate only to have to take out a mortgage at a higher rate. So they succumbed to the “ lock-in effect .”

About half of these homeowners don’t want to sell until rates fall, while 29% are going ahead regardless.

“Plenty of homeowners have been eagerly waiting for mortgage rates to come down so that they can sell their current home and more affordably upgrade to a new one,” Realtor.com Chief Economist Danielle Hale said in a statement.

“With mortgage rates expected to ease slowly throughout the year, some potential sellers are planning to get off the sidelines in 2024 and make a move, with the majority expecting to buy a new home at the same time that they sell their current one.”

Hale anticipated rates will fall to about 6.5% by the end of this year.

Why are homeowners selling their properties?

Homeowners who are planning to list their homes need to move for family (24%), for more space (23%), to downsize (23%), and for life changes (18%) such as a new marriage, child, or divorce, according to the report.

They’re also weighing financial considerations. About 24% are selling to make a profit, and 21% want to capitalize on price increases.

“Life goes on,” says Jones. “We still see that more normal churn in the housing market driven by big life events. Those things continue even in a challenging housing market.”
