A market is a vibrant hub of activity, a microcosm of human life, where the exchange of goods and services reflects the broader socio-economic dynamics of a community. A recent visit to a local market provided a fascinating insight into this complex ecosystem.

The Market’s Vibrancy

The market was a riot of colors, sounds, and scents. Stalls were adorned with a variety of goods, from fresh produce to intricate handicrafts, each item telling a story of its origin and purpose. The cacophony of vendors calling out their wares, customers haggling over prices, and the general hum of conversation created a lively atmosphere. The scent of spices mingled with the aroma of street food, forming an olfactory tapestry that was quintessential to the market experience.

Human Interaction

Beyond the commerce, the market served as a social hub. The interactions between vendors and customers, often extending beyond mere transactions, highlighted the importance of human connection. The market was a melting pot of cultures, where diverse backgrounds and experiences converged, fostering a sense of community and shared identity.

Economic Implications

From an economic perspective, the market was a testament to the principles of supply and demand, competition, and negotiation. It offered a glimpse into the local economy’s health, reflecting the purchasing power of consumers and the profitability of small businesses.

A visit to a market is more than a shopping expedition. 500 Words Essay on A Visit to a Market

Markets form an integral part of our daily lives, serving as vibrant hubs where cultures converge, and commerce unfolds. A visit to a market can be an enlightening experience, revealing the pulse of a community and the rhythm of its economic life. This essay explores the multi-faceted dimensions of a market visit, reflecting upon its sociocultural, economic, and environmental implications.

Sociocultural Significance

A market is much more than a place for buying and selling. It is a social space where people from diverse backgrounds interact, negotiate, and exchange not just goods, but ideas, customs, and values. A walk through the bustling lanes of a market offers a glimpse into the local culture, the culinary preferences, fashion trends, and the community’s unique ways of life. The vibrant colors, the distinct aromas, the cacophony of vendors calling out their wares, all contribute to a sensory symphony that encapsulates the essence of a locale.

From an economic perspective, markets are microcosms of the broader economy. They reflect the dynamics of supply and demand, pricing mechanisms, and consumer behavior. Observing the interactions between buyers and sellers, one can discern the principles of negotiation, competition, and market equilibrium in action. Additionally, markets often serve as the lifeblood of local economies, providing livelihoods to countless vendors, artisans, and small businesses. Hence, a visit to a market can provide invaluable insights into the economic underpinnings of a society.

Environmental Impact

While markets are centers of vibrant activity, they can also be sites of significant environmental impact. The use of plastic packaging, food waste, and energy consumption are some of the pressing environmental issues associated with markets. A visit to a market can serve as a stark reminder of the need for sustainable practices in our daily commerce. However, on the positive side, markets can also promote sustainability. For example, farmers’ markets often encourage local produce, reducing food miles and supporting sustainable agricultural practices.

In conclusion, a visit to a market is a journey into the heart of a community, a living exhibition of its culture, economy, and environmental practices. It is a space where the abstract concepts of sociology, economics, and environmental science come alive in the most tangible ways. As we navigate through the labyrinth of stalls, haggling over prices, and soaking in the atmosphere, we are participating in a complex web of interactions that define our society. A market, in essence, is a mirror reflecting our collective lives, a testament to our shared humanity, and a reminder of our responsibility towards sustainable living.

A Visit to a Crowded Market

4 Best Essay on “A Visit to a Crowded Market”

Shopping has a pleasure of its own. The modern man is always busy in buying and selling. A market is, therefore, always very busy, overcrowded, and interesting. I visit the market is, therefore, always very busy, overcrowded and interesting. I visit the market almost every day to cater to the various needs of the household. In the market, there is a lot of hustle and bustle. People, rich or poor, young or old, come to make purchases. The market presents a miniature image of the whole city. On one side of the market, there are fruit and vegetable shops; on the other side people deal in clothes, utensils, crockery, toys, sweets, cutlery, stationery, etc.  There are also refreshment stalls where people have either cold drinks or cups, of hot tea. People move about to and fro. They haggle and haggle with the shopkeepers to charge reasonable prices. Customers are afraid of pick-pockets. Some persons sell articles on the footpaths, while others in the wooden stalls. A market satisfies the needs of the customers. Ladies can be seen more in number than men because shopping is basically a feminine occupation. Beggars are a painful sight in a market. Stray dogs also meet our eyes. On the whole, a market scene is worth seeing. It provides a glimpse of the people from different backgrounds.

A Visit to the Vegetable Market

I had heard that a fish market is the noisiest place in the world. But last Saturday, when I visited the local vegetable market, I felt that probably the expression “fish market” contained half-truth only. Perhaps it was the vegetable market which was the noisiest place in the world. I felt that it was like out-Heroding Herod in its own way.

It was not only the noise that was so conspicuous but perhaps the mud, filth, and stench there broke all limits of decency and human tolerance. I wondered the fortuitous stamina of those who worked there and no less of those who went to purchase vegetables from there.

I, however, realized that just as I was compelled by circumstances to go there, others might also be sailing in the same boat of constraint and compulsion.

Actually, as if coincidentally, a horde of rough-mannered, thick-skinned guests descended in our house that day without my prior intimation. All of them had their separate tastes and demands and it was certain that they would create an infernal state in our house if their demands were not met.

I could not depend entirely on my servant. I took him with me and ordered him to carry a few bags with him.

Both my servant and I landed ourselves in the filthy miasma of the place called a vegetable market. We contacted different vendors and rehari wallas. We haggled with them over rates.

Finally, we filled our bags and sacks with carrots, radishes, turnips, peas, cabbages, cauliflowers, green chilies — indeed; whatever we could lay hands on at a reasonable rate. We hired a rickshaw and returned home. We unloaded our luggage in front of our mother and before our shameless guests who just smiled and gesticulated, getting a savage pleasure out of my fate. But I thanked God I hadn’t got an infectious or a skin disease like scabies, eczema, bronchitis, cough, pneumonia, or asthma while slogging through the rotten vegetables.

Visit to A Market Place

A marketplace is the place spread out in a specific area, where a variety of goods of daily requirements are available for purchase b customers. There are an umpteen number of markets that cater to the daily requirements of the public, and they are placed close to residential areas for the convenience of the customers.

I had heard a lot about a market called Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi but had never seen it. Once this year, in the month of October, on the occasion of my sister’s marriage, when my mother was going to Chandni Chowk for shopping I insisted that I would also like to accompany her. My mother and even my sister tried their best to dissuade me from going but, I insisted. They even told me that there would be too much crowd and that a child of my size may get suffocated there. However, I heard none of their comments and pleas but insisted on accompanying them. We started on our journey from Vasant Kunj and even when we were just halfway through, my patience gave way as the distance was forbidding. Nothing could be done in the matter now, and I had to keep quiet as I had myself put the suggestion and locked a noose round my neck. After about one and a half hours on the road, we finally reached the much talked of the market – Chandni Chowk – the biggest and oldest market of Delhi.

What I saw in this market in the first place was a sea of men rushing up and down everywhere on all the roads. It appeared as though all the people were just rushing to some very important mission to and fro on the roads. The sight of the crowd the one of the like I had never seen before just frightened me out of my wits, and, I already started why I opted to come here. As we proceeded to wander towards the shops yes, I was really impressed. There, all yes all items of consumer needs could be seen in plenty but all the shops were just too crowded.

Since we had gone there for shopping for my sister s marriage we also had to wade through the crowd and do our work. First, we went to a jewellery shop. The sight of that long road full of jewellery shops on both sides of the road took me by surprise. I had never imagined that such an expensive item like jewellery was also available in dozens of shops and, each shop was crowded with customers. I came to know that, this road dotted with shops of jewellery was called Dariba Kalan , and all the shops here were decades old. Here we sat for almost an hour in the shop where Mummy had ordered some items and thus for a while, got some relief from the pushing and jostling on the crowded roads.

After our work here, I was once again a bit fresh and now we moved to saree shops where we had to make bulk purchases for my sister and gifting to friends and relatives Oh my God what a shock awaited me here. So many narrow lanes were emerging from the main road and leading to huge saree shops with stocks of thousands of sarees. Sarees of golden work called zari were just glittering in those tiny shops. Here in these lanes, I think we spent nearly three Hours peeping into one shop and then another, and making selections of sarees. This part of the market was not even visible from the main road but, it appeared to be an of important business center having brisk sales. I was absolutely dazed to see huge stocks piled up in each of these tiny shops. All salesmen in each and every shop were busy catching customers. I noticed that most women would come to a shop, see a few sarees, and just go away, while some others were other making purchases of thousands of rupees. The sale was rather brisk considering that the items bought were far too expensive. Seeing the fast movement of customers in and out of the shops, I asked one of the shopkeepers if this was the situation prevailing every day. To this, the reply was the obvious one that, these days the sale is more than usual because this period of the year was the marriage season, and the festival season is also round the corner. This reasoning did convince me to some extent but I still continued to wonder how much crowd there could be daily. This I thought because I am told that this market is forever congested, all the year-round, only becoming unmanageably crowded on occasions like marriages and festivals.

After having bought a lot of sarees, I don’t know how many, we finally got up from the shop to get out – and believe me, we forget our way out, and got lost in those tiny congested lanes and by-lanes. Finally, we had to ask someone to guide us to the main road. Here on the main road we again saw a row of big shops of all kinds of items and all full to the brim. Next, we were told that there are several other markets branching out from this main road of Chandi Chowk. All these other roads specialise in special items and are wholesale dealers. An entire lot of these markets branching off from the main road of Chandni Chowk is altogether called Chandi Chowk. Special shops for clothes, stationery, grains, etc. are offshoots of this main road. Since we had no other work, now we went out to the car, which again was a long walk through a crowd.

This visit to Chandni Chowk has been my first experience. The wading slowly through thick crowds, the shops full of items of daily consumption, the different markets for different items did impress me. Though it was a tiring day but a wonderful shopping experience. This was my most interesting visit to a market of repute in Delhi.

Essay No. 04

A Crowded Market Scene

It was around Diwali. We wanted to buy clothes, Diwali lights, and many other items. Chandni Chowk is famous for such items. My mother asked me to join her and see myself what this famous market is like. My mother and I went to Chandni Chowk. It is near the Red Fort in Old Delhi. There were a lot of crowds. Everyone was pushing each other. There were traffic jams and the vehicles were blowing their horns. Street vendors were selling various items which were very cheap. They were shouting on top of their voice to solicit the customers for their wares. Many customers were bargaining with the shopkeepers. Some poor beggars were asking for food and money. We went to a shop, where my mother bought a saree and a suit for me. She bought some artificial jewelry for me. We also bought some sweets from the famous shop of Ghantewala. From the Electrical Market, we bought Diwali lights and electric iron. I also bought some CDs of famous music albums and a video game for my brother. We were all tired after shopping. We took a cold drink to refresh ourselves. Thereafter we returned home. I enjoyed the shopping very much, although the market was very crowded.

Essay On A Visit to Market

  • Post category: Essay
  • Reading time: 4 mins read

One day I accompanied my mother to our local market. She had gone to buy vegetables and groceries.

The market place was very crowded. There was hardly any space for us to move about. The place was very noisy. It was lovely to see the piles of vegetables and fruits in the market. My mother bought plenty of vegetables and also some fruits. I helped her to carry her shopping bag.

She then went to a grocer’s shop. She bought some groceries. There were many other shops besides the grocer’s shop. There were sweet-meat shops, flower sellers’ shops, shops selling utensils, crockery, cutlery and textiles. Several hawkers went about shouting their wares. They had combs, ribbons, buttons and sundry articles for sale.

In that big crowd there must have been some pickpockets. A lady’s purse was snatched away and she shouted to raise an alarm. People were running towards her, but nobody knew who was the thief. The poor lady lost her money. She could not do any shopping that day.

Cattle moved about in the market and tried to eat up the vegetables. The vendors drove them away and shouted at them. A lot of bargaining goes on in every market. The seller never tells the buyer the correct price of a thing. So the seller and the buyer go on bargaining until they arrive at a price suitable to both.

| enjoyed my visit to the market, particularly as my mother bought me some sweets. I munched my sweets happily on my way to home. I made up my mind to visit the market again when I got a chance to do so.

Market Place

Coming to the market simply before a festive season wasn’t a nice expertise. everybody had to shop for one thing or the opposite. Therefore, the prices of most commodities were quite high. We made our way carefully through various sections buying lights, diyas, decorative items, rangoli, flowers, etc. We also bought lots of sweets and another foodstuff. It was a crowded market. There were many street hawkers on both sides of the street. They were shouting and approaching us with requests to buy their stuff. It was getting difficult for us to avoid them.

The shopping bags we were carrying got heavier and heavier. So my mother asked me to stand at a corner with the bags. She instructed me not to move or talk to strangers. The crowd got thicker and thicker. Standing at the corner, I was observing the market. The noise and heat were increasing. I observed many parents facing difficulties in pacifying their children who were getting impatient in the crowded market.

A Visit to a Market Short Essay

In the market , I noticed ladies who were hurrying up as it was getting late. Some people were bargaining while others were just looking at things and moving on. There were so many fancy things that were attracting me. I was waiting for my mother to come. Soon she came with some more bags in her hands. I told her about the things that I wanted to buy.

We then moved on to the other street. From there, we bought a few gifts to be given to our family and friends on Diwali . Then we came to the street that was full of food outlets. We had some snacks and fresh juice. This made us feel fresh and energetic. We then went to see other shops selling decorative items. We bought different types of lamps and lights, artificial flowers, and many other things.

As we were almost done with all the shopping, we started walking towards our car. On the way too, my mother kept buying small stuff which she liked. We had so many bags with us that we couldn’t hold them all together. We kept the bags in the car and started driving back home. It took us a long time to get out of the market as we got stuck in a traffic jam.

My mother and I were completely exhausted. On reaching home, we breathed a sigh of relief.

A Visit to the Market

A market place is a place spread out in a specific area, where a variety of goods of daily requirements are available for purchase by customers. I accompanied my mother to the central market to buy some groceries that she needed for the coming New Year. The marketplace is always crowded. The shops are mostly small in size.

When we arrived at the market we could not find a place to park the car. So we waited patiently for about ten minutes before someone vacated a parking space and we moved in. This happens mostly when the vendors do not allow the customers to choose the vegetables displayed and insist on buying which they carelessly put and weigh.

Coming to the market just before a festive season was not a pleasant experience. The whole town seemed to be there. Everyone had things to buy. So the prices of things shot up. Worst of all, we had to struggle to get these things. All the shopkeepers had decorated their shops beautifully to welcome the customers. Some shops sell fruits and dairy products, some sell groceries, some sell fish, some sell utensils, some sell gift items and stationery.

So we made our way carefully through the various sections buying vegetables, meat, fish, noodles, spices, and other foodstuffs. We had wanted to buy some prawns too but they were all sold out, despite their sky-high price. We made our way carefully through various sections buying lights, diyas, decorative items, rangoli, flowers, etc. The small traders of the village carried on their thriving business there. It was really a nice place to visit.

The bags got heavier and heavier. The crowd got thicker and thicker. The noise and heat were overwhelming. As we had nearly done all the shopping, I told my mother that I would wait for her in the car. I could not stand being among hundreds of aggressive shoppers anymore. This part of the market was not even visible from the main road but, it appeared to be an important business center having brisk sales. I lugged the bags wearily to the car and breathed a sigh of relief when I reached it. The air smelled sweet and cool. I was glad to be outside.

These markets have made our lives very easy as all day-to-day items are available at a comfortable distance. The shopkeepers are honest and sell quality products at reasonable prices.

English Essay on “A Visit to The Local Bazaar” English Essay-Paragraph-Speech for Class 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 CBSE Students and competitive Examination.

A Visit to The Local Bazaar

I am sure not one of us has ever given a second thought to our local bazaar. We visit it often, complain about its claustrophobic set up and the non-availability of items (which a super market is sure to have) and finally get back with our essentials after dodging people, two wheelers, a couple of dogs and an odd cow!

I was totally averse to going to the bazaar as a teenager and always sat at home or at the most in the car. This trend carried on till I had a family to run. When in small cities, in remote locations, the local bazaar is all that we have and are totally dependent on it for our domestic needs. Before long, I was even looking forward to an outing to the Bazaar-the slush, dog. cow and crowds notwithstanding. If you detach yourself from what is happening in a Bazaar and observe it as an outsider you will find the scene hilarious, pathetic and yet incredible. The hustle-bustle of such a place is worth watching. The vendors at their efficient and stubborn best warding off hagglers and the customers, usually women not giving up a chance to make a bargain are a sight to see!

There is something so charming about the simplicity and unpretentiousness of a bazaar that despite being uncomfortable and dirty, it lures you.

Sample Essay on A Day at the Market

Friday evening, my father asked me whether I would like to go with him to the Market on Saturday morning. I instantly said yes.

The next day morning, my father took a few shopping bags and gave me also a cloth bag. My mom gave him a list of items to be purchased. The Market was about 10 minutes from our home. Dad and I went there walking.

Visit to a Market

I saw vendors shouting out various vegetable names and fruit names with the prices. First, we visited a vegetable vendor and bought half a kilo of okra, some tomatoes, some beans, and some carrots. My father gave him Rs 200. I was counting in my head how much balance dad would get. Ideally, he was supposed to get Rs 50 back. Instead he got Rs 100 back. My dad was on a call, so he perhaps didn't realize. I asked him how you got Rs 100 back. Dad also pondered, and then he told the shopkeeper about the wrong balance he gave. Dad gave me a pat on my back.

Next, we went to the fruit seller. The mangoes looked so tempting. He had many fruits, which also included apples, two to three types of bananas, watermelon, guavas, Jamun, litchi and jackfruit. Dad bought a few mangoes and bananas.

Then we went to the fish seller. I saw small, big and medium fish. Some were in a round container with water. That place stunk. I covered my nose. However, I love eating fried fish. I don't recollect the name, but dad bought one kilo of fish.

Finally, we visited a grocery store. Dad takes out the list that mom gave them. He checks and tells me also to check whether all the things have been bought or not. From the grocery shop, he buys a few biscuits and two packets of milk. Dad tells me to keep it in my bag. I was happy to carry them.

Essay on Market in English | [A visit to Vegetable Market]

Hello, friends today I have come up with an essay on the vegetable market, in this essay I have shared my personal experience of my visit to a village vegetable market where I almost spent an hour in the vegetable market. So let us start with the essay on the market.

picture of vegetable market used for an essay on A visit to vegetalble market

A visit to a vegetable market.

It was Saturday evening and mother decided to go for a vegetable shopping tomorrow from our local vegetable market. Buying vegetables from the market is no new thing for my mother unlike all of the mothers. For buying vegetables from the market she was preparing a rough list of items to be purchased. I was sitting and enjoying the television show, suddenly mom asked me to come with her tomorrow, to the market so that I could get knowledge about how to buy vegetables and I agreed to go with her as tomorrow was Sunday, my school had a holiday and I had nothing to do.

Early morning mom finished the work and took me with her to the vegetable market. I had not even entered the market and it was so noisy outside and the area was very crowded. I could clearly hear vegetable vendors shouting to sell vegetables. To enter the market a gate was built and no vehicles were allowed inside, people can only go on foot for shopping.

As we entered into the market mom told me that the market was divided into two sections for convenience of the people one was the vegetarian and other was the non-vegetarian section. The major part of the market was covered by the vegetarians as it included fruits and all the vegetables. And this section was the most crowded one. Mom told people from all over the village to come here every day, to buy food.

Mom took the list and started the search for the vegetables on the list. There were no banners of what vegetable a shopkeeper was selling, one has to go and check by themselves if the required vegetable is available or not. I knew about the vegetables used daily in our home, but now it was time to learn about green leafy vegetables as each look similar but wasn't the same. Mom told me about each one on our list.

The scene at the market was very interesting, vendors were shouting and telling about the vegetables they had and at the same time they were also convincing people that they had the best and fresh vegetables. Every shopkeeper was working very hard, vegetables were very well arranged with proper utilization of space. Vegetables were brought near markets from trucks in heavy sacks. Then these heavy sacks of vegetables were carried by vendors on their back to the market as there were no vehicles allowed into the marketplace.

I and my mom were getting fresh vegetables as on our list, our bags filled as our list ended. Mom showed me how to choose fresh vegetables and taught me how to bargain for the best price. I almost spend an hour in the market and it was a great experience there, I saw the hard work people have to do for their living.

Finally, we returned back to our home, this visit to the market had made me very tired I needed rest, but mom returned and started her work. And finally, for lunch and dinner, we had fresh and healthy vegetables on our plates.

Short essay on a visit to a market place

essay on visit to market

A market place is the place spread out in a specific area, where a variety of goods of daily requirements are available for purchase by customers. There are an umpteen number of markets all they catering to the daily requirements of the public, and they are placed close to residential areas for the convenience of the customers.

We started on our journey from Vasant Kunj and even when we were just half way through, my patience gave way as, the distance was forbidding.

Nothing could be done in the matter now, and I had to keep quiet as, I had myself put the suggestion and locked a noose round my neck. After about one and a half hours on the road we finally reached the much talked of market – Chandni Chowk – the biggest and oldest market of Delhi.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

What I saw in this market in the first place was a sea of men rushing up and down everywhere on all the roads. It appeared as though all the people were just rushing to some very important mission to and fro on the roads. The sight of the crowd the one of the like I had never seen before just frightened me out of my wits, and, I already started

wondering why I opted to come here. As we proceeded towards the shops yes, I was really impressed. There, all, yes all items of consumer needs could be seen in plenty but all the shops were just too crowded.

Since we had gone there for shopping for my sister marriage we also had to wade through the crowd and do our work. First, we went to a jewelry shop. The sight of that long road full of jeweler shops on both sides of the road took me by surprise.

I had never imagined that, such an expensive item like jewelry was also available in dozens of shops and, each shop was crowded with customers. I came to know that, this road dotted with shops of jewelry was called Dariba Kalan, and all the shops here were decades old.

Here we sat for almost an hour in the shop where Mummy had ordered some items and thus for a while, got some relief from the pushing and jostling on the crowded roads.

After our work here, I was once again a bit fresh and now we moved to saree shops where we had to make bulk purchases for my sister and gifting to friends and relatives.

Oh my God what a shock awaited me here. So many narrow lanes were emerging from the main road and leading to huge saree shops with stocks of thousands of sarees. Sarees of golden work called zari were just glittering in those tiny shops. Here in these lanes I think we spent nearly three hours peeping into one shop and then another, and making selections of sarees.

This part of the market was not even visible from the main road but, it appeared to be an important business centre having brisk sales. I was absolutely dazed to see huge stocks piled up in each of these tiny shops. All salesmen in each and every shop were busy catching customers.

I noticed that, most women would come to a shop, see a few sarees and just go away, while some others were making purchases of thousands of

rupees.

This I thought because I am told that this market is forever congested, all the year round, only becoming unmanageably crowded on occasions like marriages and festivals.

After having bought a lot of sarees, I don’t know how many, we finally got up from the shop to get out – and believe me, we forget our way out, and got lost in those tiny congested lanes and by-lanes. Finally we had to ask someone to guide us to the main road.

Here on the main road we again saw a row of big shops of all kinds of items, and all full to the brim. Next we were told that, there are several other markets branching out from this main road of Chandi Chowk. All these other roads specialise in special items and are wholesale dealers.

The entire lot of these markets branching off from the main road of Chandni Chowk is all together called Chandi Chowk. Special shops for clothes, stationery, grains etc. are offshoots of this main road.

Facebook let Netflix peek into user DMs, explosive court docs claim

The court documents were unsealed last week and form part of a major anti-trust lawsuit.

Facebook privacy lapses showed gross negligence, but no crime: Judge Napolitano

Facebook privacy lapses

The social media giant Meta allegedly allowed Netflix to access Facebook users' direct messages for nearly a decade, breaking anti-competitive activities and privacy rules, explosive court documents claim.

The court documents, which were unsealed last week, are part of a major anti-trust lawsuit filed by U.S. citizens Maximilian Klein and Sarah Grabert, who claim Netflix and Facebook "enjoyed a special relationship" so that Netflix could better tailor its ads with Facebook .

Facebook received millions of dollars in ad revenue from Netflix as part of these close ties, guaranteeing ad spending of $150 million in 2017, the lawsuit claims.

The lawsuit also claims Netflix's co-founder, Reed Hastings, joined Facebook’s board of directors and then was instrumental in the closure of Facebook Watch – a streaming service competitor to Netflix.

The lawsuit was filed in April 2023 and demands the court have Hastings respond to the plaintiff’s claims.

"For nearly a decade, Netflix and Facebook enjoyed a special relationship. Netflix bought hundreds of millions of dollars in Facebook ads; entered into a series of agreements sharing data with Facebook; received bespoke access to private Facebook APIs; and agreed to custom partnerships and integrations that helped supercharge Facebook’s ad targeting and ranking models," the lawsuit states.

APIs (application programming interface) are pieces of software that allow two or more computer programs or components to communicate and share information with each other.

The API agreement allowed "Netflix programmatic access to Facebook’s private messages inboxes, in exchange Netflix would ‘provide to FB a written report every two weeks that shows daily counts of recommendations sends and recipient clicks by interface, initiation surface, and/or implementation variation (e.g. Facebook vs. non-Facebook recommendation receipts).’"

"In August 2013, Facebook provided Netflix with access to its so-called ‘Titan API,’ a private API that allowed a whitelisted partner to access, among other things, Facebook users’ ‘messaging app and non-app friends,’" the documents claim.

INSTAGRAM USERS FUME AS APP BEGINS LIMITING POLITICAL CONTENT

Meta has said in the past that it does not disclose people’s private messages to partners without their knowledge and that the API access only gave partners an ability to reach inboxes, i.e. to send messages to users via API.

"Meta didn’t share people’s private messages with Netflix," a Meta spokesperson told Fox Business on Tuesday. "As the document says, the agreement allowed people to message their friends on Facebook about what they were watching on Netflix, directly from the Netflix app. Such agreements are commonplace in the industry. We are confident the facts will show this complaint is meritless."

FOX Business also reached out to Netflix for further comment but did not immediately receive a response. Facebook changed its name to Meta in 2021 as its CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled metaverse, a virtual reality space.

In 2018, the New York Times published a report citing hundreds of pages of Facebook documents , alleging Facebook had authorized Spotify and Netflix to access users' DMs.

The publication reported that the connections helped Facebook gain explosive growth and bolstered its ad revenue streams.

Meta has already been fined for sharing users' information without permission.

In 2022, Ireland fined Meta $284 million after data about more than half a billion users was leaked online.

Full names, phone numbers, locations and birthdays of users who used the platform between 2018 and 2019 were leaked online by a "bad actor" who Meta said exploited a security vulnerability, reports the Daily Mail.

That same year, Meta agreed to pay $725 million to settle a security breach case related to Cambridge Analytica, a British social media engineering company.

The firm had paid Facebook for access to the personal information of about 87 million Facebook users, which was then used to target U.S. voters during the 2016 campaign that culminated in Donald Trump's election win.

Trump Is Accidentally Exposing Aileen Cannon’s Shady Pro-MAGA Game

Even as the judge’s latest moves show she’s carefully disguising her advocacy for trump, he is making it clear that he expects her to save him..

Trump

When Judge Aileen Cannon handed down her latest ruling in the prosecution of Donald Trump for stealing classified documents, many legal observers immediately understood the shady gamesmanship lurking behind it. She did, technically, rule against Trump by refusing to dismiss the case—but actually made it easier for herself to kill the case later, or to steer a jury toward an acquittal.

Trump’s lawyers had argued that the Presidential Records Act, which was passed in the wake of the Watergate scandal, allowed him to reclassify national security documents as his personal property. That’s a grotesque misreading of the law’s history and intent, and Cannon appeared to agree, declaring that the PRA “does not provide a pre-trial basis to dismiss” the case. The media reported this as a partial “win” for special counsel Jack Smith’s prosecution team.

But as constitutional scholar Laurence Tribe put it , this was a “pretend” ruling against Trump that ended up “reserving” Cannon’s ability to decide the case for Trump in a way that cannot be appealed. In short, Cannon seems to recognize that as she moves toward that endgame, it’s essential to maintain plausible deniability throughout.

“Judge Cannon is being canny in her Trump-protective approach,” Lee Kovarsky, a law professor at the University of Texas at Austin, told me.

Trump doesn’t seem to have noticed the “canny” part. He doesn’t bother hiding his expectation that Cannon—who was appointed to the federal bench by Trump in 2020—will put a heavy thumb on the scale in his favor. That complicates Cannon’s efforts to maintain that objective legal aura she’s striving for.

Which points to a larger pattern: On numerous fronts, Trump’s allies—overt and tacit alike—seek to run interference for his corruption and likely criminality in ways that allow them to maintain a veneer of respect for the rule of law. But Trump keeps demanding that they openly pervert the rule of law on his behalf, not least because a central feature of the MAGA movement is explicit contempt for the very idea that the law should apply to him and his supporters at all.

After Smith requested Thursday that Cannon rule quickly on the Trump team’s claim that the PRA absolves him of wrongdoing, Trump posted this on Truth Social:

Deranged “Special” Counsel Jack Smith…should be sanctioned or censured for the way he is attacking a highly respected Judge, Aileen Cannon, who is presiding over his FAKE Documents Hoax case in Florida….He shouldn’t even be allowed to participate in this sham case, where I, unlike Crooked Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and all the rest, come under the Presidential Records Act. I DID NOTHING WRONG, BUT BIDEN DID, AND THEY LET HIM OFF SCOT-FREE. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN, JACK? A TWO TIERED SYSTEM OF JUSTICE. ELECTION INTERFERENCE!

Everything here is exactly backwards. President Biden was cleared of wrongdoing by a special counsel appointed under Biden but originally nominated as a U.S. attorney in 2017 by Trump. Whereas Robert Hur could not find evidence that would persuade a jury of criminal wrongdoing, Smith secured an indictment against Trump from a grand jury of the former president’s peers. What’s more, a judge considered reams of evidence that Trump had improperly stashed classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort, concluding that probable cause existed to authorize a search of it.

Yet in Trump’s hands, none of these details matter—he steamrolls right over them—because the sum of his message is that, by definition, Biden is guilty and Trump is innocent. As with his ceaseless attacks on Smith and everyone else trying to hold him accountable to the law, any such efforts are to be presumed illegitimate by virtue of the fact that he’s their target. That’s also the message of Trump’s attacks on the family members of officials involved in cases against him: not just that he’s trying to prevent the application of the law to himself by any means necessary, but also that he’s flaunting it.

Similarly, Trump has no basis for declaring Cannon “highly respected” other than his correct perception that she’s on his side.

Having all this out in the open is the last thing Cannon wants, because by all indications, she’s striving to appear neutral in the case—while sneakily leaving the door open to help Trump later. To wit: Cannon didn’t rule on Trump’s claim that he was authorized under the PRA to take the documents. Had she done so in his favor, as many legal experts noted , it would have been subject to appeal. But by deferring that question, Cannon has given herself two options later: Instruct the jury at trial to take that argument seriously into account, making acquittal more likely, or dismiss the case herself on those grounds.

Such a move would place Trump’s acquittal beyond appeal, as it would transpire after a jury was seated. Given that this comes after a string of tortured and inexplicable rulings in Trump’s favor in the case— Jonathan V. Last describes Cannon as effectively a “MAGA judge in the tank for Trump” —it can no longer be denied: She really may be preparing to take such action, which would kill Smith’s case for good.

“By refusing to decide the PRA issue now, she avoids near-certain reversal,” said Kovarsky of the University of Texas. “By deferring it until after the jury’s sworn, she can make appellate correction impossible.”

To the degree that Trump makes it explicit that he fully expects Cannon to scuttle the case, it complicates executing this game with credibility.

We see this pattern regularly. Many Republicans have resisted holding Trump accountable for the Jan. 6 insurrection, but for them, the sweet spot is to say that of course rioters who are actually convicted of breaking laws should pay a price; it’s just that Jan. 6 was mostly a peaceful protest and Trump himself is the victim of a witch hunt!

Trump insists on an entirely different proposition: Even those convicted in a court of law for Jan. 6 are victims, martyrs, “ hostages .” When Trump suggests he will pardon them, it’s as if he’s observing something as obvious as the weather: It goes without saying that the law doesn’t apply to his supporters. That leaves no space for Republicans to allow that the workings of our legal system with regard to Jan. 6 are legitimate in any way.

Meanwhile, this week in Michigan, Trump posed with law enforcement officers while denouncing Biden’s border policies. Many noted the absurdity of this, given that Trump has vowed to pardon people who attacked cops on Jan 6th, including some who were directly involved in some of that day’s most vicious violence against them.

But Trump sees no need to account for this absurdity. He hails the heroism and bravery of cops, as long as they support him; he hails the heroism and bravery of people who viciously attack cops, as long as those people also support him.

All this is a feature of autocratic politics, which turns on the idea that the system is hopelessly corrupted and perpetually out to drag the strongman down, and the only political arrangement that’s unsullied and virtuous is the bond between him and his followers.

Just as Trump openly characterized the attorney general he appointed as his personal attorney, he sees Cannon as his judge, and cops who support him as his cops. “The reason he tells his supporters all this explicitly is he’s conditioning them to turn away from democracy,” says Ruth Ben-Ghiat, an expert on strongman rule . “He’s conditioning them to accept authoritarian modes of governance and the idea of the leader as unbound and unaccountable.”

Cannon does not seem to relish being perceived as a servant of this twisted ethos. Trump doesn’t seem to care; he’s openly telling the world exactly what he expects her to do for him. We can only hope Trump has left her no option but to prove him wrong.

China has flooded the market with so many solar panels that people are using them as garden fencing

  • Chinese manufacturers are making so many solar panels, it's causing a global glut.
  • Solar panels have become so cheap that some people are using them to line fences.
  • Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will talk about the overcapacity during her trip to China this week.

China's manufacturers are pumping out so many solar panels that the resulting global glut has caused prices to tank.

Solar panels — 80% of which are made in China — are so cheap that they're now being used to line garden fences in Germany and the Netherlands, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

Solar panels are typically installed on rooftops, where they can capture the most sunlight — but there's so much excess supply that some people are putting them on fences. This also saves on pricey labor and scaffolding costs required for roof installations, FT reported.

Fences covered in solar panels are also starting to take off in the UK, North America, and Australia.

"Why put up a fence when you can just put up a load of solar panels, even if they're not aligned exactly to the sun?" Martin Brough, the head of climate research at BNP Paribas Exane, told the FT.

Solar-panel supply globally is forecast to reach 1,100 gigawatts by the end of this year — three times more than demand, the International Energy Agency wrote in a report released in January.

Prices on the spot market have already fallen by half in 2023 and are likely to extend decline by another 40% by 2028, the agency added.

Related stories

China's hold on the solar-panel market is now in a state of oversupply, which means manufacturers elsewhere — such as the US and Europe — are unable to compete effectively.

The oversupply of cheap Chinese solar panels is on US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen's radar as she heads to China on Wednesday for meetings with top Chinese officials. The visit is her second trip to China in the past 12 months.

"During her engagements in China, Secretary Yellen will advocate for American workers and businesses to ensure they are treated fairly, including by pressing Chinese counterparts on unfair trade practices and underscoring the global economic consequences of Chinese industrial overcapacity," the Treasury said in a press release on Tuesday announcing Yellen's visit.

Yellen said at a Suniva solar cell plant in Georgia last week that she was "concerned about global spillovers from the excess capacity that we are seeing in China" that have now hit new energy industries like solar, electric vehicles, and lithium-ion batteries.

Beijing is championing those sectors, which it's calling the "new three" industries, to drive its economy. China is struggling to pivot from its reliance on the real-estate industry, which is now mired in a debt crisis.

"China's overcapacity distorts global prices and production patterns and hurts American firms and workers, as well as firms and workers around the world," Yellen said.

"I will convey my belief that excess capacity poses risks not only to American workers and firms and to the global economy, but also to productivity and growth in the Chinese economy," she added.

Chinese manufacturers are feeling the heat from solar-panel overcapacity, too.

Last month, Longi Green Energy Technology, the world's largest solar-cell manufacturer, announced it was laying off thousands of workers amid overcapacity and low prices.

Everything to know about the 2024 total solar eclipse

North America is on the verge of another masking of the sun.

Monday's total solar eclipse will make landfall along Mexico's Pacific coast and cross into Texas and 14 other U.S. states, before exiting over Canada.

It will last almost twice as long, with an even wider audience, than the total solar eclipse that stretched coast-to-coast in the U.S. in 2017.

The moon will shroud the sun for up to 4 minutes, 28 seconds, a spectacle normally unfolding in remote corners of the globe but this time passing over major cities like Dallas, Indianapolis and Cleveland and Buffalo. An estimated 44 million people live within the path of totality, with another couple hundred million within 200 miles, guaranteeing the continent's biggest eclipse crowd ever.

How to find the best solar eclipse viewing spot near you

As excitement builds for the total solar eclipse on Monday, the Tri-State area may have some of the more favorable viewing spots in the country.

And the New York City area, though 10% shy of totality, will enjoy a great shot of taking in the celestial spectacle, with darkening skies, dropping temperatures and wild animals reacting to the sudden dimming.

Upstate New York could offer a sweet spot for viewing. Places like Syracuse are right on the edge of the path of totality and where cloud cover will be lowest.

How the solar eclipse will impact plants and animals

Scientists will be studying how the solar eclipse phenomenon will affect plant and animal activity on Earth . The eclipse may last just mere minutes for those in the path of totality, but the effect it has on the natural world will be profound, researchers told ABC News.

Researchers expect breeding birds to quiet down, crickets to start to vocalize and bees to stop buzzing.

LaVerne Biser, 105, to witness his 13th solar eclipse

LaVerne Biser will soon witness his 13th solar eclipse on April 8. The 105-year-old, born in Ohio, would travel the world with his wife, Marion Biser, and schedule their vacations around the eclipse.

Biser is an amateur astronomer who has a large collection of images and photos of the solar eclipses they've witnessed. By trade, he was a mechanical engineer, whose team performed stress tests for large-scale planes.

State of emergency declared as 1 million people expected to visit Niagara Falls

Ontario's Niagara Region has declared a state of emergency as it prepares to welcome up to a million visitors for the solar eclipse in early April. The total solar eclipse will be the first to touch the province since 1979, and Niagara Falls was declared by National Geographic to be one of the best places to see it.

The city is in the path of totality, where the moon will entirely block the sun's rays for a few minutes. Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati said earlier in March that he expects the most visitors his city has ever seen in a single day.

New York City public libraries to give away free solar eclipse shades for safe viewing

If you still need to pick up shades for the total solar eclipse, New York City libraries have you covered. All three of the city's public library systems will be distributing free solar eclipse glasses .

Glasses will be available while quantities last on a first-come, first-serve basis at all Brooklyn Public Library, Queens Public Library, and New York Public Library locations.

New York inmates are suing to watch solar eclipse after state orders prisons locked down

Inmates in New York are suing the state corrections department over the decision to lock down prisons during next Monday's total solar eclipse.

The suit filed Friday in federal court in upstate New York argues that the April 8 lockdown violates inmates' constitutional rights to practice their faiths by preventing them from taking part in a religiously significant event.

Fake eclipse glasses are hitting the market. Here's how to tell if you have a pair

As the total solar eclipse, occurring across Mexico, the United States and Canada on April 8, draws near, experts are reminding spectators to grab a pair of eclipse glasses to view the celestial event safely - and to make sure they aren't fake .

Whether you're using a fancy camera or a smartphone, here's how to take photos of the solar eclipse

The upcoming April 8 total eclipse will likely be the one of the most photographed events of the year, with almost 32 million people in the United States alone living in the path of totality.

Total solar eclipse could cause air travel delays: FAA

A total solar eclipse set to deliver a stunning display in the sky on April 8 could be trouble for some air travelers and pilots due to possible flight delays, the Federal Aviation Administration warned.

The eclipse -- which will pass over Mexico, the United States and Canada -- is expected to impact air traffic and airports along the eclipse's path from April 7 until April 10, the FAA said in a notice about special air traffic procedures. This could mean delays for air travelers, too -- especially as the eclipse overlaps with spring break travel, the agency said Wednesday.

The FAA estimated that any air travel impacts from the eclipse would be felt from April 7 at 6 a.m. until April 10 at midnight.

(The Associated Press contributed to this report.)

Chief Meteorologist Lee Goldberg will cover the eclipse from Syracuse, New York, while meteorologist Brittany Bell will be reporting from Niagara Falls. Plus, we invite you to watch

ABC News and National Geographic's "Eclipse Across America" live on April 8 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. EDT on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+ and Hulu.
