As we move through life, we find that there are many things out of our control. We can’t choose our parents, our genetics , or control the things that happen in the world around us. One thing that we can control is who our friends are, and this decision can either make our lives so much richer and beautiful, or more stressful and disappointing. Today we’ll focus on how to choose friends who enrich our lives and make them more beautiful.

Why friends are so important

Having solid friendships is important for two main reasons. First, they make life more enjoyable. We get to share the beautiful aspects of life with people who we love, which can enrich our everyday experiences. Second, our friends help us through the difficult times. Having friends to support us through hard times can make unimaginably difficult situations seem more tolerable.

The most beautiful part about pouring our time and energy into friendships is that not only do friends help enrich our lives, but we enrich theirs too! Friendships get us through the tough times in life, make things more fun and enjoyable, and all-around make our lives better. I urge you to take stock of your friendships and ask yourself if your current friends people build you up and support you, or is the friendship more one-sided?

As we explore friendships today, these are also inclusive of our partners. I believe that the foundation for any healthy relationship is friendship. So it’s important to group our romantic partners into this conversation too.

So, where do we find friends? This might sound silly, but finding friends can be challenging! When I first moved to California for my Ph.D., I didn’t have any friends out here. There were quite a few people in my program that I enjoyed spending time with. But, towards the end of school, they became very busy and were no longer able to dedicate time to hang out anymore. Thankfully, through the help of a very good therapist, I learned that it was important to enjoy life instead of striving for excellence all of the time. As a result, I learned how important it was to carve out time in my life for friends.

Unfortunately, the people I had dedicated time to thus far were achievement-oriented and were pouring their time into work and not our friendships. This forced me to seek out other ways to form connections with people. I ended up finding a local hiking group with the hopes of meeting people with similar interests. During one of these hikes, I met Jim, one of my best friends to this day.

We became instant friends. We have continued to support each other over the years, and even more importantly, we always make time for one another. We both view the friendship as one that makes each other’s lives better, therefore it’s always worth the time and energy. The backbone of any successful friendship is one where both sides put in equal effort and support.

Both Jim and I were forced to put in more effort when he moved across the country to the East Coast. Because we already had such a strong foundation, this didn’t impact our friendship. We talk all of the time and see each other several times a year. We make the relationship a priority no matter what coast each other is on. Like anything in life that is valuable to us, we must work at it and put time and effort into it.

When it's time to move on from a friendship

The second part of the friendship discussion can be a difficult one — reassessing your current friendships and potentially moving on from friends who don’t add value to your life.

Two of my best friends from high school went down different paths from me. We still keep in contact, but I don’t spend too much time with them anymore. The supporting, loving part of our relationship wasn’t there anymore, so it was no longer worth putting energy into maintaining a friendship that had changed so much.

This may be a story you can relate to. What I hope you take away from this post is this — friendships take energy, time, and commitment. And if you’re putting your time and energy into someone who isn’t enriching your life and giving you the support you need, it may be time to reevaluate that friendship.

essay role of friend

If you find yourself in the market for friends (who isn’t?) I recommend you find groups or activities that you genuinely enjoy. This way you’ll have the opportunity to connect with people who have similar interests. And once you’re there, take a risk! Talk to people, exchange contact information, and follow up with them. It may feel scary at first, but the reward outweighs the momentary uncomfortable feeling you may have.

Friendship and dating

In many ways, the most important friendship in our lives is the one we have with our romantic partners. The first criteria we should look for in this partner is someone who is ultimately a good friend to us, meaning that they are kind, positive, loving, and supportive. If we’re dating someone and they’re a jerk, it’s probably safe to assume that they’re not a good friend. To avoid this, I recommend seeking out someone who is a good friend first, i.e. before the romance and sexual stuff gets in the way.

When there are bumps in a friendship or a romantic relationship , it’s important to work through those tough times. The tricky part is that it will take two people to fix that issue. We can only control our actions and hold ourselves accountable, but we cannot control our friend or our partner's reaction. In addition to our own actions, we have control over the friends or partners that we choose in the first place. If we prioritize choosing good people who we can trust will work through issues with us, then we can work through anything.

Friendships are a crucial part of living a fulfilling life. It’s so important that we surround ourselves with people who we have fun with, who support us, and people who make us better. You may already have beautiful friendships in your life, but if you’re still in the market for friends, it’s never too late to cultivate new relationships that will make your life even more magnificent.

The friendship was invented for trade purposes because when two people with opposite things that depend on each other re put together, trade is maximized.

The second type of friendship is based on pleasure. This is described as friendship in which two individuals are drawn to each other based on desires of pleasure and is characterized by passionate feelings and feelings of belonging. This is the reason behind why it is appropriate to settle on an appropriate decision with regards to making friends.

Genuine friendship is truly a gift delighted in by a couple. The individuals who have it ought to express gratitude toward God for having genuine pearls in their lives and the individuals who don’t have a couple of good friends ought to always take a stab at better approaches to anchor great friends. No organization is superior to having a friend close by in the midst of need. You will stay cheerful in your one-room flat on the off chance that you are surrounded by your friends; then again, you can’t discover satisfaction even in your estate in the event that you are far away from others.

Types of Friends:

There is variety everywhere, so why not in friends. We can see different types of friends during our journey of life. For instance, your best friend at school is someone with whom you just get along the most. That friend, especially in the case of girls, may just get annoyed even if you talk to another of your friend more than her. Such is the childish nature of such friendships that at times it is difficult for others to identify whether you are best friends or competitors.

Then there is another category of your siblings. No matter how much you deny, but your siblings or your elder brother and sisters are those friends of yours who stay on with you for your entire life. You have a different set of friendship with them as you find yourself fighting with them most of the times. However, in times of need, you shall see that they are first ones standing behind you, supporting you.

There is another category of friends called professional friends. You come across such friends only when you grow up and choose a profession for yourself. These friends are usually from the same organisation and prove to be helpful during your settling years. Some of them tend to stay on with you even when you change companies.

Friendship Examples from History:

History has always taught us a lot. Examples of true friendship are not far behind. We have some famous example from history which makes us realise the true value of friendship. The topmost of them are the Krishna and Sudama friendship. We all must have read or heard as to how after becoming a king when Krishna met Sudama, his childhood friend, he treated him with honour even though Sudama was a poor person. It teaches us the friendship need not be between equals. It has to be between likeminded people. Next example is of Karna and Duryodhana, again from the Mahabharat era.

Despite knowing the fact that the Pandavas were his brothers, Karna went on to fight alongside Duryodhan as he is his best friend and even laid down his life for him. What more example of true friendship can one find? Again from the same era, Krishna and Arjun are also referred to as the best of the friends. Bhagavad Gita is an example of how a true friend can guide you towards positivity in life and make you follow the path of Dharma. Similarly, there are numerous examples from history which teach us the values of true friendship and the need to nourish such for own good.

Whether you accept or deny it, a friend plays an important role in your life. In fact, it is very important to have a friend. However, at the same time, it is extremely important to choose the friends wisely as they are the ones who can build you or destroy you. Nonetheless, a friend’s company is something which one enjoys all through life and friends should be treated as the best treasure a man can have.

Friendship essays have a standard structure of academic papers. They are short and consist of three parts:

  • Introduction about friendship
  • Paragraph about friendship
  • Friendship essay conclusion

In the intro, you start with an attention grabber. Feel free to use a quote, a surprising fact, or an anecdote. Introduce the topic and finish with thesis statements about friendship.

In a friendship paragraph, you support a thesis with facts, evidence, personal stories, etc. As a rule, essay bodies have three paragraphs minimum. So you can devote each paragraph to one aspect :

  • Definition of this concept
  • Why having friends is essential
  • What a friend can give you
  • Types of friendship
  • Challenges mates meet on their way
  • Characteristics of a good friend
  • How to strengthen a friendship, etc.

In the essay body, you can use stories and examples from your life to illustrate points. Tell about your friends and share personal thoughts — it will make your paper more compelling to read.

In the concluding paragraph, sum up the points and restate your thesis. Finish on a positive note, leaving readers with the food for thought.

But friends do a lot more than give you a shoulder to cry on; they also have a positive impact on your health. Some research even says friendships are just as important to your well-being as eating right and exercising.

So how do friendships contribute to your well-being?

Friends Are Good for Your Physical Health

It turns out that healthy relationships actually contribute to good physical health. Having a close circle of friends can decrease your risk of health problems like diabetes, heart attack, and stroke.

Having strong social ties can also decrease feelings of loneliness, which evidence shows can take a toll on your longevity. According to a 2010 review, people with strong relationships have half the risk of premature death from all causes.

Social isolation and loneliness are linked to a variety of health issues such as high blood pressure, substance abuse, heart disease, and even cancer.

Friends Encourage Healthy Behaviors

One possible explanation for those health benefits is that friendships can help you make lifestyle changes that can have a direct impact on your well-being. For example, your friends can help you set and maintain goals to eat better and exercise more. They can also watch out for you and give a heads-up when any unhealthy behaviors (like drinking too much ) get out of hand.

Additionally, people are more motivated and likely to stick to a weight loss or exercise program when they do it with a buddy. It's much easier to get out and stay active when you have a friend by your side.

That friend may also suggest activities that you would not have considered on your own—thus, pushing you outside your comfort zone to challenge your anxiety.

Friends Give You Emotional Support

If you find yourself going through a hard time, having a friend to help you through can make the transition easier.

Research also shows that happiness is contagious among friends. One study of high school students found that those who were depressed were twice as likely to recover if they had happy friends. Likewise, kids were half as likely to develop depression if their friends had a "healthy mood."

Friends Help Build Your Confidence

Everyone has self-doubts and insecurities every now and then. But having friends who support you plays a big role in building your self-esteem , or how much you appreciate and love yourself.

Supportive friends can help you feel more confident by offering praise and reassurance when you're feeling unsure. They'll shine a light on just how amazing you are and how much you have to offer others.

Friends Help You Beat Stress

Everyone goes through stressful events. If you know you have people you can count on, you may be less likely to even perceive a tough time as stressful.

Spending time with friends can also help reduce stress . According to Harvard Medical School, "social connections help relieve levels of stress, which can harm the heart's arteries, gut function, insulin regulation, and the immune system."

Friends can also help you cope with stressful situations. According to one small study, when children hang out with their friends during a stressful situation, they produce less cortisol, a hormone released when the body is under stress.

As the song goes: “We all need somebody to lean on.”

A lack of friends can leave you feeling lonely and without support, which makes you vulnerable to other problems such as depression and substance abuse.

Friends Push You To Be Your Best

Friends can also provide a positive influence. If you make friends with people who are generous with their time, help others, or are ambitious or family-oriented, you are more likely to develop those values yourself.

Great friends have the power to mold you into the best version of yourself. They see you and love you for who you truly are. They encourage you and push you to do better and be the person you want to be—your "ideal self."

There are many different components of friendship. If someone is loyal to you, honest with you, shares many of your interests, and is there for you when you need them, you would likely consider them a friend.

Many of the benefits of friends could be considered evolutionary—having a group of friends can create feelings of safety and social inclusion. Caring for others, and having others that care for you in turn, can help foster a collective purpose and feelings of self-worth.

Role of Friend in Self-Knowledge Essay

Introduction, augustine’s conclusion, augustine’s arguments, aquinas on self-knowledge, aquinas’s critique, responses to criticism, works cited.

There can be only a few doubts that both Augustine and Thomas Aquinas have contributed rather substantially to the formation of the metaphysical discourse in Western philosophy. In particular, the theologians in question have helped establishing the main axiomatic postulates of what later came to be known as the “body-mind dualism”. Their another important contribution had to do with defining the main principles of subjecting the surrounding physical reality to the ontological inquiry.

Nevertheless, even though Augustine and Aquinas have been equally preoccupied with trying to defend the epistemic soundness of Christianity, their “technical” approaches to doing this differed rather substantially. In my paper, I will substantiate the validity of this statement, with respect to the given topic, while answering the thematically relevant questions from the provided list.

According to Augustine, one’s friends play a few important functions, within the context of how he or she goes about striving to attain a true knowledge of self. Probably the most important of them has to do with the fact that, as Augustine saw it, a person’s socialization with friends will make it much more likely for him or her to stay in close touch with its deep-seated sense of self-identity (soul), the integrity of which is being negatively impacted by the flow of time.

The reason for this is that the very fact that we are able to retain the long-term relationship with our friends means that we tend to assess the surrounding reality in a similar manner with the former. Therefore, by keeping in close touch with his/her friends, one is able to experience its past as the present – something that in its turn is supposed to help the concerned individual to attain an intuitive awareness of its individuality (soul) as a “thing-in-itself”. Consequently, this is expected to empower the person rather considerably, in the sense of strengthening his/her desire to convert to Christianity:

With these past (friendship-related) impressions, I can construct now this, now that, image of things that I either have experienced or have believed on the basis of experience–and from these I can further construct future actions, events, and hopes; and I can meditate on all these things as if they were present (Augustine X, VIII).

Allegorically speaking, Augustine believed that friendship is the key to discovering oneself.

The philosopher also used to emphasize the importance of friends, within the context of how people go about trying to achieve self-actualization. The reason for this is that one’s very presence in the company of friends, establishes the objective preconditions for him/her to be willing to engage with these individuals verbally. And, according to Augustine, language/verbalization is the actual channel through which the “divine” reality is letting people know of its existence.

Therefore, the measure of one’s verbal proficiency is reflective of his or her varying ability to understand the actual mechanics of how this world turns around – something that will have an utterly empowering effect on the person in question:

So it was that by frequently hearing words, in different phrases, I gradually identified the objects which the words stood for and, having formed my mouth to repeat these signs, I was thereby able to express my will (Augustine I, VIII).

Finally, Augustine used to promote the idea that while in the company of close friends, a person undergoes the spiritual growth at a much rate as compared to what it would have been the case, had he or she choose in favor of the solitary approach to attaining self-knowledge. The reason for this is that the philosopher appears to have been aware of the systemic aspects of one’s behavior as the group member.

In its turn, this implies that we do only need friends, but we need “good friends”. In the Confessions , this idea continues to recur throughout the book’s entirety, with the author’s initial realization of the fact that “one is whoever happened to be his friends” dating back to the time when he stole a pear from the neighbors while in the company of some maliciously minded boys. According to the theologian, he would not have “sinned” if it was not up to his friendship with these boys:

I did not realize this (the sinfulness of stealing a pear) and rushed on headlong with such blindness that, among my friends, I was ashamed to be less shameless than they, when I heard them boasting of their disgraceful exploits (Augustine II, III).

Evidently enough, Augustine believed that there is an ambivalent quality to one’s decision to lead a socially integrated lifestyle. Hence, the philosopher’s insistence that an individual must exercise an extreme caution when it comes to befriending others.

The author’s conclusion, regarding the epistemic function of friends, cannot be discussed outside of the clearly Neoplatonic essence of his religious metaphysics. In a similar manner with Plato, Augustine used to insist that the physical world around us is merely a faint shadow of the spiritual (invisible) reality of “God’s Kingdom”, which is quite inaccessible to our six senses. Therefore, when it comes to trying to get closer to God, one must prompt its mind to operate in the “introspective” mode – something that explains the philosopher’s fondness of mediation, as the instrument of accomplishing this particular objective. While expounding on the essence of Augustine’s Neoplatonism, Cary stated:

(According to Augustine) the mind is not like the eye, which has to look outside itself to see itself, using something like a mirror as a medium of reflection. Instead, it turns directly to itself: something pertaining to its own nature is in its sight and it is called back to it when it thinks of itself by a turning that is incorporeal, not in the dimension of space (193).

However, adopting a strongly introspective approach to cognition is easier said than done. The reason for this has to do with the fact that, as opposed to what it is the case with God, human beings simply do not have what it takes to have a spatially prolonged grasp on the reality. This simply could not be otherwise – whereas God simultaneously exists in the past, present, and future, people are only capable of interacting with the immediate present while negatively affected the strongly emotive (and consequentially inaccurate) recollections of the past.

To complicate the matter even further, the human brain tends to alter the very fabric of one’s memories of the past, which deals yet another blow to the casuistic integrity of the person’s self-knowledge. In this regard, we can refer to people’s tendency to assess the same event that has taken place in their lives from different (and even opposite) perspectives. For example, it may seem like a really good idea having your tongue pierced when you are a teen. After you reach the age of fifty, however, the same idea will not appear to you quite as appealing. If the very passage of time causes our sense of self-knowledge to undergo a continual metamorphosis, how can we even come close to understanding who we truly are?

Augustine addresses this dilemma as follows. Even though there is hardly anything constant about how people position themselves throughout their lives, most of them are unconsciously aware of the presence of the never-changing “soul” inside of them. Therefore, by spending time with friends, we are able to revive the memories of the long-gone days – hence, coming to realize our essence as the spatially extended beings, just as it is the case with the Creator himself. In its turn, this is supposed to provide us with the powerful incentive to serve God, as the true purpose of our existence:

I give thanks to thee, O Lord of heaven and earth, giving praise to thee for that first being and my infancy of which I have no memory. For thou hast granted to man that he should come to self-knowledge through the knowledge of others (Augustine I, VI).

Therefore, there is indeed nothing accidental about the earlier mentioned peculiarities of Augustine’s stance on friendship, as the instrument of helping the involved participants reach spiritual maturity.

Whereas it will be appropriate to suggest that Augustine’s approach to attaining self-knowledge has a strong Neoplatonic quality to it, the same suggestion clearly does not apply to the epistemic philosophy of Aquinas. The rationale behind this suggestion is that, unlike Augustine, Aquinas was an adherent of the Aristotelean dialectical paradigm, concerned with stressing out the intrinsic interrelatedness between the reality’s “physical” and “spiritual” emanations. In this regard, Macdonald came up with the perfectly legitimate observation:

On Aquinas’s view, mind and world simply belong together: as created by God… This means that the world is directly accessible in sense experience as well as thought, such that in sense experience and thought we are in direct sensory and intellective contact with extra-sensory and extramental objects and states of affairs (82).

Whereas Augustine used to believe that the true quintessence of just about everything in this world belongs to the “ideational” realm of “God’s Kingdom”, and that one cannot expect to be in the position to learn more about God by learning more about the dialectical nature of the relationship between causes and effects in our world, Aquinas was not quite as skeptical about such a hypothetical possibility.

According to him, there is very little rationale in downplaying the importance of the reality’s sensorial extrapolations (Kondrick 205). After all, just about every cognitive process inside one’s mind cannot be evaluated outside of what used to account for the experiential context at the time when it has taken place. The philosopher’s following statement is very clear about this: “The intellect understands itself in the same way as it understands other things.

But it understands other things, not by their essence, but by their similitudes. Therefore, it does not understand itself by its own essence” (Aquinas 86, 2). What this means is that, contrary to how Augustine saw it, it is possible to go about exploring the ways of God by mean of learning more about the cause-effect ways of the world in which we all live. In other words, positivist science is just as appropriate of a tool of getting to know God better as it is being the case with a prayer/religious meditation.

Because of the above-mentioned, it will not be much of a challenge to formulate the Aquinas’s would-be objection to Augustine’s conceptualization of communal interconnectedness as the facilitator of self-knowledge. In all probability, Aquinas would suggest that Augustine’s account of self-knowledge is rather speculative and even heretical to an extent. After all, Confessions draw a clear line between the immaterial “divine” realm, on one hand, and the one of mortal people, on the other, while implying that the former is much superior to the latter.

And, there is a strong Manichaean undertone to such an idea. Given the history of Augustine’s involvement with Manichaeism through the early phase of his life, this certainly does not come as a particular surprise. Such a point of view, however, is far from being considered representing an undisputed truth-value. The reason for this is quite apparent – the Neoplatonic (Augustinian) strategy for accumulating self-knowledge is not consistent with the real ways of the world, which are just as “divine” as those of the “Kingdom of Heaven”. This, of course, can serve as yet additional indication of Christianity’s fallaciousness, as a religion.

Evidently enough, Aquinas wanted to “fix” the situation, in this regard, while making sure that one’s willingness to adopt the identity of a Christian is indeed ontologically valid. As Scott aptly observed: “Thomistic ontological epistemology bears relevance for empirical science. This is because if truth claims are epistemic, they should be potentially verifiable through falsificatory tests” (253).

This provides us with the rationale to suggest that Aquinas would be unlikely to find Augustine’s outlook on the role of friends as the agents of self-knowledge very convincing, especially given the earlier mentioned ambivalent quality to it. At the same time, it would also be rather unlikely for Aquinas being willing to criticize Augustine publicly – even today, both theologians are commonly regarded to have equally contributed to the development of the Catholic theological doctrine. Throughout the Middle Ages, it was assumed that Augustine’s epistemic stance did correlate perfectly well with that of Aquinas – hence the Church’s willingness to sanctify both philosophers.

We can speculate that while addressing Aquinas’s criticism, Augustine would once again refer to the fact that experiential knowledge cannot possibly be deemed a methodologically appropriate pathway towards gaining self-awareness. The reason for this is that what we learn about the surrounding environment (and our place in it) only indirectly relates to this environment’s “ideational” nature.

There is even more to it – by allowing the epistemic apparatus of a secular science to be utilized for defending the theological soundness of Christianity (the idea endorsed by Aquinas), one will inevitably create the objective prerequisites for the former to begin weakening this religion from within. It needs to be said that such a development did take place later in the history. After all, both Galilei and Copernicus have received an extensive theological training with Thomism at its core.

In his turn, Aquinas would be likely to refute such an argumentative claim by pointing to the fact that, whereas the deployment of the Augustinian epistemological approach did make a certain sense in the 4 th century AD, this has effectively ceased to be the case through the “advanced Middle Ages” period. This simply could not be otherwise – by the 13 th century, Christianly has undergone a transformation from being just another quasi-religious suicidal cult, followed by those who were expecting to see the second coming of the “Savior” during their lifetime, to the continent’s most powerful religion, capable of waging wars (against the “infidels”) of its own.

By this time, it was no longer appropriate for Christian theologians to focus on exploiting the apocalyptic anxieties in people while denying the possibility for empirical science to be able to serve even a subservient role to religion. Science and religion had to be “reunited” – hence, the discursive significance of Thomism.

I believe that the earlier deployed line of argumentation, as to what account for the most fundamental differences between the gnoseological approaches by Augustine and Aquinas, is fully consistent with the paper’s initial thesis.

Whereas Augustine used to draw heavily from Plato, Aquinas has made a point in using the Aristotelian dialectics as the foundation of his religious philosophy. There is, however, a good reason to think of both theologians as having been mutually complementary, in the epistemic sense of this word. This is another reason to believe that Augustine and Aquinas did contribute to the developmental progress of Western philosophy rather substantially – despite the fact that doing this was the last thing on their mind at the time.

Watch Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and More From 2024 WNBA Draft Class Choose Between Kendrick Lamar and Drake

The future WNBA stars struggled picking between Drizzy and K Dot in the latest chapter of their storied feud.

Caitlin Clark ,  Angel Reese , Cameron Brink, and the rest of the 2024  WNBA  draft class were given the difficult task of picking sides between  Drake  and  Kendrick Lamar .

On Monday, the future stars of the WNBA linked up with Complex on the red carpet of the 2024 draft, where some of the prospects were asked to select between Drizzy and K Dot. The question came amid the ongoing feud between the hip-hop heavyweights, and some members of the WNBA's upcoming rookie class knew exactly who they were rooting for.

Caitlin Clark, Kamilla Cardoso, Celeste Taylor, and seven other draft picks selected Drake, while Cameron Brink was the only person to pick Kendrick. Angel Reese and Nika Muhl, on the other hand, decided to stay neutral.

While the athletes chose between 6 God and Kung Fu Kenny, they were also anxiously waiting to see which team would draft them for the upcoming season. Clark was drafted No. 1 by the Indiana Fever, while Brink was selected second overall by the Los Angeles Sparks, and Cardoso went to the Chicago Sky at No. 3.

Angel Reese was drafted at No. 7 by Chicago and will be joining Cardoso next season, with whom she had several battles in college. In an interview with reporters following the draft, Cardoso  highlighted the bright future Chicago has with her and Reese .

"I think it's going to be great," said Cardoso. "She's a great player, I'm a great player, so two great players together. Nobody's going to get no rebounds on us."

Keeping U.S. Power Behind Israel Will Keep Iran at Bay

President Biden looking pensive in front of an Israeli flag.

By Reuel Marc Gerecht and Ray Takeyh

Mr. Gerecht is a resident scholar at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. Mr. Takeyh is a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.

Until Iran’s barrage of missiles and drones against Israel, the two countries had avoided open military intrusions into each other’s territory. Tehran most often acted through proxies, and Jerusalem via bombing runs and unacknowledged assassinations in the region.

Iran’s unprecedented attack this weekend, which failed to kill a single Israeli, has perhaps now opened the clerical regime to a major reprisal. The White House clearly does not want Jerusalem to undertake such a response, fearing escalation that could bring the United States into a regional war.

But the chances are good that Israel will strike back to deter future direct attacks. And the best way for Washington to limit the expansion of this conflict is to signal clearly its intention to support an Israeli counterattack. It’s the recurring military paradox: To contain a war, a belligerent sometimes needs to threaten its expansion. Iran’s internal situation, its memory about past U.S. military action and a conspiratorial worldview all support this strategy.

An Iranian regime well aware of its weaknesses knows how convulsive a war with Israel and America would be and how unwelcome it would be received by a restive populace already protesting a dysfunctional economy and increasing oppression. Many within the elite are surely angry at having fallen from the inner circles of power and wealth as the 84-year-old supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, engineers his succession.

A powerful Israeli response could include a preventive strike against Iran’s nuclear sites. In what may prove a miscalculation, Ayatollah Khamenei is not known to have given the green light to assemble a nuclear weapon. Why strike Iran hard and leave its atomic ambitions undamaged? Washington will surely want to reduce the consequences in the region from such an attack. To do that, the White House will need to make Tehran understand that U.S. forces will immediately intercede if Iran then tries to escalate.

To be sure, Israel and America may both be at fault for giving Ayatollah Khamenei the impression that they had no appetite for escalation. Tehran has abetted Islamic militants who have killed a lot of Israelis and Americans while seeming to be immune from a direct attack. The occasional Israeli and American assassination of Iranian military men on foreign soil, or in Iran without fanfare, actually highlighted a reluctance to confront Iran more directly.

And yet the Islamic Republic remains careful not to get into direct conflict with America. Senior clergy members and the commanders in the Revolutionary Guards are all old enough to remember that the U.S. Navy inflicted severe damage on the Iranian Navy in 1988 in retaliation for the mining of an American warship. It was one of the biggest U.S. naval operations since World War II. The United States said the downing in 1988 of Iran Air flight 655 by the Navy warship Vincennes was an accident, but Tehran believed it was deliberate and an indication that Washington was ready to intervene in the war with Iraq. It was thought to be a factor in helping to convince Iran to end the conflict. Senior Revolutionary Guardsmen, angry at Israel for the killing of senior commanders on April 1 in a strike in Syria, may doubt Washington’s volition, but they have no doubts about American military hardware.

Sometimes conspiracy-mindedness, instead of interfering with clear thinking, can be useful to an adversary. It is a conceit of the Iranian Islamist elite that Jews manipulate Americans into wars not of their choosing. Ayatollah Khamenei has articulated this idea : “The Western powers are a mafia,” he said in 2022. “At the top of this mafia stand the prominent Zionist merchants, and the politicians obey them. The U.S. is their showcase, and they’re spread out everywhere.”

It is time for Washington to feed this conspiratorial thinking. The United States should augment its presence in the Gulf, dispatch admirals and spy chiefs to Israel and undertake joint Israeli-U.S. military exercises that highlight long-range bombing runs. With its darkest conspiracies reconfirmed, Iran’s elite will search for a way out — even if Israel decides on a frontal assault.

The United States has often favored containment and de-escalation with Iran. When Iran’s proxies killed three American service members in Jordan on Jan. 28, Washington didn’t hold Tehran directly responsible. While attacking the proxies, the White House conveyed to Tehran its non-escalatory intentions. It had even renewed a sanctions waiver granting Iran access to $10 billion held in escrow by Oman for Iraqi electricity purchases.

The strategy has worked. Ayatollah Khamenei clamped down on his surrogates, who desisted from further attack on Americans. But the supreme leader can turn that spigot back on at any time.

Today, the problem with Washington distancing itself from Jerusalem, as it has over the large-scale civilian deaths and humanitarian suffering in the Gaza war, is that it will not defuse a crisis that puts Iran and Israel in direct confrontation. And Ayatollah Khamenei will not allow himself to be seen as backing down to Jews — particularly if they are unmoored from superior American power.

For the United States, standing by Israel would allow Ayatollah Khamenei another path, a way to back down without losing face. There is a precedent for such a retreat. Again, the Iran-Iraq war is instructive. The founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ruhollah Khomeini, opted for an armistice with Iraq, a country he had long denigrated, because of the sheer exhaustion of his nation and the fear that the war could simply not be won. The implicit threat of American involvement was a big factor in this decision.

Now only the United States can again prompt similar foreboding in Tehran about the intercession of an indomitable force. For years Washington has been doing, more or less, just the opposite.

Rico Wade, key Outkast producer and member of Organized Noize, dies at 52

Rico Wade

Rico Wade , a member of the pioneering Atlanta-based production trio Organized Noize and a  key early Outkast collaborator , has died, according to an Instagram post by his close friend Killer Mike and the  Atlanta Journal-Constitution . No cause of death was cited; he was 52.

“I don’t have the words to express my deep and profound sense of loss,” Killer Mike wrote. “I am praying for your wife and children. I am praying for the Wade family. I am praying for us all. I deeply appreciate your acceptance into the Dungeon Family, mentorship, friendship and brotherhood. Idk where I would be without y’all.”

The Organized Noize songwriting-production team — which also featured Ray Murray and Sleepy Brown — was formed in the early ‘90s and played a pivotal role in early releases by Outkast, TLC, Goodie Mob and many others, and were frequently shouted out or featured on those recordings. Along with Jermaine Dupri, their sound, which was as indebted to classic R&B as hip-hop, defined the city’s burgeoning scene of the era, which would lay the framework for Atlanta’s dominance as a hip-hop capital in the coming decades.

The extended collective around the scene was known as the “Dungeon Family,” which also included Killer Mike and Big Rube.

Rico Wade In Atlanta

Wade’s studio in the city’s East Point neighborhood, “the Dungeon,” was not only the birthplace of many of the era’s hits, it featured in many of them as well — “We havin’ a smokeout in the Dungeon with the mary jane,” Outkast rapped on “Ain’t No Thang,” from their galvanizing 1994 debut.

Information on survivors was not immediately available, although Wade is related to rapper Future.

essay role of friend

NEW YORK (AP) — A National Public Radio editor who wrote an essay criticizing his employer for promoting liberal views resigned on Wednesday, attacking NPR’s new CEO on the way out.

Uri Berliner, a senior editor on NPR’s business desk, posted his resignation letter on X, formerly Twitter, a day after it was revealed that he had been suspended for five days for violating company rules about outside work done without permission.

“I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems” written about in his essay, Berliner said in his resignation letter.

Katherine Maher, a former tech executive appointed in January as NPR’s chief executive, has been criticized by conservative activists for social media messages that disparaged former President Donald Trump. The messages predated her hiring at NPR.

NPR’s public relations chief said the organization does not comment on individual personnel matters.

The suspension and subsequent resignation highlight the delicate balance that many U.S. news organizations and their editorial employees face. On one hand, as journalists striving to produce unbiased news, they’re not supposed to comment on contentious public issues; on the other, many journalists consider it their duty to critique their own organizations’ approaches to journalism when needed.

In his essay , written for the online Free Press site, Berliner said NPR is dominated by liberals and no longer has an open-minded spirit. He traced the change to coverage of Trump’s presidency.

“There’s an unspoken consensus about the stories we should pursue and how they should be framed,” he wrote. “It’s frictionless — one story after another about instances of supposed racism, transphobia, signs of the climate apocalypse, Israel doing something bad and the dire threat of Republican policies. It’s almost like an assembly line.”

He said he’d brought up his concerns internally and no changes had been made, making him “a visible wrong-thinker at a place I love.”

In the essay’s wake, NPR top editorial executive, Edith Chapin, said leadership strongly disagreed with Berliner’s assessment of the outlet’s journalism and the way it went about its work.

It’s not clear what Berliner was referring to when he talked about disparagement by Maher. In a lengthy memo to staff members last week, she wrote: “Asking a question about whether we’re living up to our mission should always be fair game: after all, journalism is nothing if not hard questions. Questioning whether our people are serving their mission with integrity, based on little more than the recognition of their identity, is profoundly disrespectful, hurtful and demeaning.”

Conservative activist Christopher Rufo revealed some of Maher’s past tweets after the essay was published. In one tweet, dated January 2018, Maher wrote that “Donald Trump is a racist.” A post just before the 2020 election pictured her in a Biden campaign hat.

In response, an NPR spokeswoman said Maher, years before she joined the radio network, was exercising her right to express herself. She is not involved in editorial decisions at NPR, the network said.

The issue is an example of what can happen when business executives, instead of journalists, are appointed to roles overseeing news organizations: they find themselves scrutinized for signs of bias in ways they hadn’t been before. Recently, NBC Universal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde has been criticized for service on paid corporate boards.

Maher is the former head of the Wikimedia Foundation. NPR’s own story about the 40-year-old executive’s appointment in January noted that she “has never worked directly in journalism or at a news organization.”

In his resignation letter, Berliner said that he did not support any efforts to strip NPR of public funding. “I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism,” he wrote.

Travis Kelce is amping up his career outside football. Here is a full list of his side hustles.

  • Travis Kelce is in his "side hustle" era.
  • The Kansas City Chiefs tight-end was just hired to host "Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?"
  • Kelce has also been expanding outside football through brand deals, a podcast, and investing in a movie.

Insider Today

Travis Kelce's road to becoming " as famous as the Rock " continues as he is hired to host the new Amazon Prime video gameshow "Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?"

Fresh after a weekend at Coachella with his world-famous girlfriend Taylor Swift, multiple outlets reported the new gig for Kelce on Tuesday.

Until last year, Travis Kelce's fame was rooted in his career as a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, a role that The Wall Street Journal said gets him a $14 million salary.

He's dabbled outside football before, but little compares to the transformational effect of starting to date Swift in July 2023.

Kelce seems to be using the fame boost wisely, gaining brand deals and pushing his family podcast.

Here are his four latest gigs outside football:

Hosting "Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?"

The Guardian reported that Amazon ordered 20 episodes of the new gameshow.

The show — a spin-off from Fox's "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" — sees adult contestants answering 11 elementary school-level trivia questions with the help of celebrities.

A rep for Amazon told the publication in a statement that contestants could win up to $100,000.

Kelce told the Guardian in a statement: "I'm just happy to be on the hosting side of the equation here and excited to see how these famous faces keep up."

This is not Kelce's first rodeo. In March 2023, Kelce hosted " Saturday Night Live " and made a cameo with Swift later that year.

People reported in January, citing an unnamed source, that Kelce was keen to host and act after his retirement after his two appearances on "SNL."

However, when speaking to The Journal in November 2023, Kelce said he wanted to become a sports commentator. The Journal's writer, J.R. Moehringer, suggested that Kelce was interested in stand-up comedy, too.

Kelce runs a podcast with his recently retired brother, Jason Kelce.

essay role of friend

The brothers , who both rose to fame due to their impressive football careers, launched a weekly podcast, "New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce," in September 2022.

They discuss the NFL, interview guests, and open up about their personal lives on the show. In fact, Swift and Kelce's relationship began after the Chiefs player said he wanted to give her his number on a podcast episode in July 2023.

Both brothers have had a longer football career than most players.

According to a study by RBC Wealth Management , the average NFL player retires before their 28th birthday after around seven years of pro play.

Jason Kelce, 36, retired from the NFL in March after 13 seasons.

Kelce is 34 and has played 11 seasons.

Kelce told The Journal that he would go for another season but thinks about retirement "more than anyone could ever imagine."

Kelce's co-manager, Aaron Eanes, told the Journal: "the NFL is just his side hustle."

Kelce is the king of commercials and brand deals.

essay role of friend

Kelce and his team have spent the last few years organizing multiple brand deals for the football player, including with Subway, Campbell's Soup, and Experian .

A December Wall Street Journal report cited research saying Kelce had appeared in 375 commercials aired just between September and December 2023, more than any other athlete or celebrity in the same timeframe.

Forbes reported in February that Kelce makes roughly $5 million from endorsing major brands like Nike, State Farm, Pfizer, and Bud Light.

The constant ads also increase Kelce's exposure by keeping him on people's screens and minds.

Kelce is an executive producer for the upcoming movie "My Dead Friend Zoe."

essay role of friend

Kelce became a first-time executive movie producer this year after investing in "My Dead Friend Zoe," following its premiere at the SXSW festival in March.

The movie was a war comedy-drama about a US Afghanistan veteran trying to move on from the trauma and support her grandfather.

The director, Kyle Hausmann-Stokes, told Variety in March that Kelce got involved in the film because he supported the military and veterans, calling it a "big part" of his motive.

"It was just really heartwarming and touching, and the amount of added limelight and energy that he's brought to the project is just going to help it reach a broader audience," he said.

As an executive producer, Kelce will help the film get a wider release.
