Maurice Hamilton has been around the F1 scene for over 45 years, and with over 20 books written on F1, there was nobody better qualified to pen one of the best F1 books of all time . Bernie Ecclestone wrote the bookâs foreword, and he too has been involved in the sport for a long time, helping turn the F1 championship into what it is today.
2. Total Competition: Lessons In Strategy From Formula One
Author : Ross Brawn, Adam Parr | Published : 2017 | Pages : 336
Written by F1 managing director Ross Brawn, in partnership with former Williams CEO Adam Parr, this book takes a look at the strategic side of F1 that often takes the back seat over the high speeds and glamorous appeal of the sport.
From the mind of one of F1's most famous visionaries, this book is the perfect read for those that want to understand how everything works behind the scenes.
While both authors have a wealth of experience in the sport, Brawn brings a unique set of skills to the table, having spent many years with Ferrari and then creating Brawn GP â the 2009 championship winning team. Brawn is now the managing director of Formula One, and so his insight is unparalleled in this comprehensive guide to what it takes to compete at the top .
In this book, youâll learn about the pressures of the F1 environment and what it takes to succeed, and youâll also gain insight into when things can go wrong . The F1 world is notoriously ruthless, and youâll experience just how cut-throat it can be in this excellent guide to the fastest motorsport on the planet.
While the book holds lessons applicable to other aspects of life, the F1 fan is the reader that will get the most out of it. Itâs not just a technical look at the strategies being developed behind the scenes, as it also chronicles Brawnâs own career, discussing the highs and lows during his time spent at Ferrari, Honda and Brawn GP , making it an enthralling read for old and new fans alike.
3. How To Be An F1 Driver (Jenson Button)
Author : Jenson Button | Published : 2020 | Pages : 352
Jenson Buttonâs 2020 book How To Be An F1 Driver is the 2009 World Championâs fourth autobiography. The book is the first to be wholly written when Button had retired from the sport, and so itâs a look back on his career in a unique way , with the helmet well and truly off (although he does still do some racing in different series).
This is a great read for those that want a humorous look into the life of one of F1's most famous modern World Champions.
But the book doesnât just walk you through his career, and instead it goes through what it takes to be a driver in the pinnacle of motorsport. He talks about the mental side, the physical side, and the emotional aspects of F1 that make it such a challenging environment in which to perform at the highest level.
Youâll learn about the whacky purchases, the crazy off-track stories, and the relationships he has built up in his illustrious career. He discusses all of this from the viewpoint of someone teaching you the ins and outs of being an F1 driver â albeit in a very laidback manner.
You wonât learn how to perform better in your go-kart before you move up to the junior formulas, but you will learn more about the skills youâll need to make the cut and the attitudes youâll need to adopt . The book reads well, and Buttonâs sense of humour comes through on every page. If youâre a new F1 fan or a long-time watcher of the sport, How To Be An F1 Driver is an excellent read.
4. Michael Schumacher: The Edge Of Greatness
Author : James Allen | Published : 2008 | Pages : 416
Michael Schumacher was one of the greatest drivers in the history of F1, and this book by James Allen documents his career with more insight than any other F1 book out there . Schumacher is one of the best (if not the best) F1 drivers in history, so if you are new to the sport and looking for an in-depth account of a true legend, The Edge of Greatness is it.
For those that want to understand more about the 7-time World Champion and what made him so great, there's no better book than this.
Schumacher was one of the sportâs greatest, but also one of the most controversial, and this thorough account of his career will make you feel as though you are experiencing it right in front of you from cover to cover. Loved by fans and loathed by rivals, Schumacherâs ruthless tactics made it exceptionally tough for anyone to beat him in his pursuit of seven F1 world championships .
The books listed both above and below each hold their value to a certain degree, but if you are looking for the wildest ride on this list of the greatest F1 books of all-time , Michael Schumacher: The Edge of Greatness is that book.
5. Senna Versus Prost
Author : Malcolm Folley | Published : 2010 | Pages : 416
Senna Versus Prost is the book you want to have in your hands if you want a glimpse at one of F1âs greatest rivalries . Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna were once teammates, but they both had different driving styles and personalities that eventually made them hostile toward one another. This book recounts those hostilities and a rivalry that extended beyond the track.
This book documents one of the most famous rivalries in motorsport, and it illustrates what made Senna and Prost so exciting to watch on the track.
In one corner stood Senna, whose driving style was one of the most intense in the sportâs history. In the other was Prost, whose analytical mind and clean style made many perceive him as the good guy on the track. The rivalry reached full tilt when Prost openly accused Senna of trying to drive him off the circuit .
This is a story that contains a tragic end to the rivalry, as Senna died in a crash at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola . However, you will also find an interview with Prost, plus insight from a number of chief people around F1 who saw the rivalry erupt firsthand, to help you fully understand why they are two of the most revered F1 drivers of all time.
6. How To Build A Car (Adrian Newey)
Author : Adrian Newey | Published : 2017 | Pages : 400
If you are looking to move your scope of F1 knowledge beyond that of the sportâs greatest drivers and to some of its most legendary designers, How to Build a Car: The Autobiography of the Worldâs Greatest Formula 1 Designer by Adrian Newey provides rich insights on Neweyâs love for F1 cars that date back to when he was a student at welding school .
For those that want to understand how one of the greatest engineers to grace the sport sees the world of Formula 1, look no further than this masterpiece.
Neweyâs career started with mere sketches as a 12-year-old kid during those school days, and he went on to create groundbreaking designs in both F1 and IndyCar . This book contains some complex discussions regarding engineering, so it may not be for everyone, but if you are into the science behind F1 car designs, itâs a must-read.
Throughout his illustrious 35-year career, Newey had just one goal in mind: to make a car go faster . And he accomplished just that. While this book breathes success, it does not come without tragedy, one of which being Ayrton Sennaâs death in 1994. Therefore, it is a story of ups, downs, and the true genius of one of F1âs greatest minds.
Newey also included drawings that he never revealed to the public before this point . So, if you are looking for some exquisite illustrations, this book provides them. It is overall a thoughtful, inspiring book that will motivate you to pursue your dream, while also helping you understand the more technical side of F1.
7. Murray Walker: Unless Iâm Very Much Mistaken
Author : Murray Walker | Published : 2003 | Pages : 530
We all have that one enticing aspect that draws us into a sport and we become a fan for life. Sometimes, it is a driver that we follow. Other times, we have a relative who is a die-hard fan of a specific sport. And still other times, it is a voice we hear that makes the sport so much fun to watch and to follow . That unforgettable voice for many was that of Murray Walker.
This is the story of one of Formula 1's most beloved characters, and it's an excellent read for fans both young and old.
From his ability to tell a story to his commentary âMurrayismsâ and everything in between, this book recalls the career of one of the sportâs greatest voices . But Unless Iâm Very Much Mistaken goes beyond his time in F1. It also relives, in Walkerâs voice, his childhood in the 1920s and 1930s, his experience in World War II, and some of those animated Murryisms.
This book lets new fans discover and lifelong fans relive that legendary voice that drew them into F1 . And if you are interested in gaining insights into Walkerâs life since he retired from full-time broadcasting in 2001, Unless Iâm Very Much Mistaken will give you an experience you wonât soon forget.
8. Lewis Hamilton: My Story
Author : Lewis Hamilton | Published : 2007 | Pages : 324
Next up we have a book from the now 7-time World Champion Sir Lewis Hamilton. The book was written long before even his first title came along though, and so this book takes a look at the driverâs story up until the end of his rookie season in 2007 , when he almost won the title (he would of course go on to seal that maiden championship a year later).
This book takes you back in time, before Sir Lewis Hamilton achieved the status of one of the most talented - and decorated - drivers the sport has ever seen.
If you werenât a fan of the sport back then, this book offers a great glimpse into the world of years gone by in F1. However, the real value of the book is in Hamiltonâs story , talking about his upbringing in great detail, and his journey from karting up through the motorsport ladder. This is a book that explains the true challenge that is reaching Formula 1.
While the book doesnât go into too much detail about his junior racing career â it may leave you wanting more in that respect â itâs still well worth the read for those that want to get a better understanding of what helped shape the most successful F1 driver into the champion he is today .
9. Formula 1: The Official History
Author : Maurice Hamilton | Published : 2020 | Pages : 272
Maurice Hamilton is one of the most renowned authors in F1 (featuring multiple times on this list for good reason), and he returns here to provide you with an in-depth history of the sport in the only way he knows how: to zero in on the most memorable stories regarding the sportâs drivers, teams, on-track incidents, and key rule changes .
This book serves as the ultimate guide to the long and exciting history of Formula 1, making it a great choice for new fans.
There are a few books on this list that have the potential to turn you into an F1 connoisseur overnight, and Formula 1: The Official History is one of those books. Besides detailed tales from the track, you will also find over 250 high-quality photographs featuring some legends of the sport.
So, whether you are simply looking for a visual history of F1 or if you would rather read the tales word for word, look no further than one of Maurice Hamiltonâs most accomplished works that includes a foreword by Ross Brawn . And since Hamilton has unique access to F1, you are getting a true close-up of one of the worldâs most popular sports.
10. Niki Lauda: The Biography
Author : Maurice Hamilton | Published : 2021 | Pages : 384
Regardless of the sport, there is always one individual who always overcomes impossible odds to return to a sport that they love. This book, written by none other than Maurice Hamilton, chronicles the life of a driver who was involved in such a bad crash that he was administered last rites, yet he wound up surviving and returned to racing just six weeks later (and he won two more championships) .
Niki Lauda is one of Formula One's most famous champions, and this book tells you everything you need to know about the man who helped transform the sport.
But of course, this was just one aspect of Laudaâs story. He was a straightforward individual, and that is exactly the tone you are getting from the incredible author that Maurice Hamilton is. This adds such an authenticity to the work that you would have thought Lauda himself had authored it.
You will also find those closest to Lauda reminiscing on his racing career, although the book does not go into deep detail regarding the driverâs time at Mercedes as non-executive chairman . However, there are inspiring discussions beyond Laudaâs crash, one of which included the fact that his family was not thrilled with his ambition to become a championship driver, feeling racing was beneath them.
Having faced long odds since childhood, Lauda overcame them all and he ended up winning 25 races and three championships in what is one of the most storied and inspiring F1 careers of all-time . If you are a new fan, this book is one that will rank near the top of your wish list.
11. Watching The Wheels (Damon Hill)
Author : Damon Hill | Published : 2017 | Pages : 400
Damon Hill, like a few F1 drivers, possessed bloodlines that garnered sky-high expectations . Unfortunately for Hill, he had to live in the shadow of his championship-winning father, Graham Hill. And this was by no means an easy endeavor, as Hill not only had to battle his fatherâs legacy, but F1 rivals that included the likes of Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna.
This book tells the story of how Damon Hill battled with his emotions and his rivals to become World Champion in 1996.
However, Hill overcame all of the odds stacked against him, from casting himself out of his fatherâs shadow to beating his rivals and winning the 1996 World Championship . Now, if you thought Watching the Wheels only documented an inspiring tale of a driver who created his own legacy, you are wrong.
One of the themes in this book deals with mortality, two of which hit home for Hill. The first involved his fatherâs death via an aircraft accident in 1975 and the second was Sennaâs death in 1994 . This theme makes the book every bit as heart wrenching as it is inspiring. So, if you are interested in reading this memorable tale, brace yourself for an emotional roller coaster.
12. How Alan Jones Climbed To The Top Of Formula One
Author : Alan Jones | Published : 2017 | Pages : 416
If you are looking for a rather obscure but inspiring read, AJ: How Alan Jones Climbed to the Top of Formula One by Alan Jones himself is the book you are looking for. He became the first driver to win the World Driversâ Championship with the Williamsâ team and he was also the second Australian in F1 history to win, behind Sir Jack Brabham.
This is a great book for those that want to learn more about Williams' first World Champion, and how he got to the top of the motorsport ladder.
The book covers yet another controversial figure in F1. Jones called things the way that he saw them , and he worried little about what the rest of the F1 universe thought, and that is the tone he has set in this book.
Like many autobiographies on this list, Jonesâ story goes beyond the F1 track. It follows his personal life, business ventures, and some rather humorous events that occurred both on and off the track .
And in a sport that requires immense sums of money, Jones did not always have the financial backing needed , something this book touches on. Still, he persevered, and that perseverance culminated in his 1980 championship. Jones became a man of legend in F1 circles, and now you can experience or relive the inspiring career of such an illustrious driver.
13. Life To The Limit (Jenson Button)
Author : Jenson Button | Published : 2018 | Pages : 352
This book, told in a humorous tone, is a lighthearted inside scoop that does have its somber moments . The book is also easy to read, and it contains varied chapter lengths, some of which contain just a few pages. So, if you are taking a quick 30-minute break from work or if you have somewhere to be and you just need something to do for a few minutes, this book makes for the perfect read .
Jenson Button's sense of humour comes through in this book, and it's an easy read for those that want to learn more about the 2009 World Champion's life away from the racetrack.
Life To The Limit: My Autobiography also recounts much of Jenson Buttonâs life off the track , such as growing up in the West Country, and his internal struggles, ups, and downs that came with making it as an F1 driver.
At the end of the day, F1 drivers are every bit as human as the rest of us, even if we look at them as legends putting their lives on the line. And if there is one book that exemplifies this fact, it is Jenson Buttonâs third autobiography (with another great choice being How To Be An F1 Driver ).
14. Aussie Grit (Mark Webber)
Author : Mark Webber | Published : 2016 | Pages : 432
You donât need to hail from Australia to enjoy one of the sportâs most unforgettable drivers. This book, penned by and written in Mark Webberâs voice, details the struggles that came with a legendary fight toward the top in F1 . And this book particularly relives his time with Red Bull Racing, focusing mainly on the year 2010.
Mark Webber is one of modern Formula 1's most talented drivers not to win a World Championship, and this book tells the story of his life before, during and after F1.
In 2010, Webber and his teammate, Sebastian Vettel, battled it out for the World Championship . And although Webber lost out, he still enjoyed a career that led him to finishing third for the World Championship not just in 2010, but also in 2011 and 2013.
The book also chronicles Webberâs retirement and life after his F1 career, especially giving insight on his time as an endurance racer . You are also reading a tale where Webber sugarcoats nothing, so brace yourself for an explosive ride regarding that battle for the 2010 World Championship that lifelong F1 fans remember to this day.
15. The Mechanic: The Secret World Of The F1 Pitlane
Author : Marc Priestly | Published : 2018 | Pages : 256
Whether you are a new fan or a lifelong fan of F1, your bookshelf is not complete until The Mechanic: The Secret World of the F1 Pitlane is residing in it . Marc Priestly takes you behind the scenes into the pitlane as an F1 mechanic, where you will gain incredible insight on just how much work goes into the mechanics of these lightning-fast cars.
This is a great read for those that want to learn a bit more about some of the unsung heroes of an F1 race, and how an F1 mechanic lives both in and outside of the pit lane.
Priestly outlines the technical aspects of the cars, and what exactly goes into them that allows F1 drivers to perform at such a high level at every Grand Prix. While the drivers will always be the stars and the main attractions at the track, they owe everything to the engineers who boast the skill, competitive drive, and knowledge to build the fastest racing cars .
Besides gaining some cool insights on the technicalities of these cars, you will also catch a glimpse at the luxurious lifestyles some of these engineers live when they are not building a winning car. So, if you would like to experience more than just the work life of an engineer, this book is a must-have .
Final Thoughts
The best F1 books of all time donât just talk about the sportâs history. While they are important and worthwhile for any new fan of the sport to read and gain an appreciation for, it is the individuals, from those driving the cars to others building them, that have, in turn, made F1 into the spectacle that it is today .

1. The Unknown Kimi RÀikkönen
Published in 2019 by Simon and Schuster and written by Kari Hotakainen. This international bestselling autobiography follows the life of notoriously elusive Formula One Champion Kimi RÀikkönen.
Dubbed âThe Iceman,â Kimi RĂ€ikkönen continued Finlandâs long-standing history of world-class racing drivers while also emulating the most aloof and eccentric characteristics of his predecessors.
Exploring his career success in Formula One from his first race in 2001, his maiden championship win with Ferrari in 2007, and his induction into Alfa Romeo (the team from which he would eventually retire in 2021), this autobiography gives insight into one of Formula Oneâs most seasoned drivers.
Further to his Formula One career, the book also explores Kimi RĂ€ikkönenâs sabbatical in NASCAR and Rally driving while also spending the time to explore his upbringing, family relationships, personal life, and philosophies. All of which have famously eluded journalists over the years.
In light of his retirement from Motorsports following his unceremonious exit from the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2021, there is no better time to relive the life and times of one of Formula Oneâs cult heroes!
2. A Different Kind Of Life
Published in 2017 by Echo Point Books & Media, this book follows the relationship between Ginny Williams and Frank Williams following a car crash on the way to Nice Airport in 1986 that left Williams founder and principal in a quadriplegic state.
An honest and raw account of Sir Frank Williamsâs success as the founder of Williams Racing and the tragedy that would befall him on the eve of winning his 3 rd constructorsâ title, this book tells a story of triumph over adversity.
Penned as a first-hand account of life before and after the accident from Ginny Williams (with the assistance of Pamela Cockerill), the story follows her initial meeting with Frank Williams, their turbulent relationship, and subsequent reconciliation following his accident.
An inspirational, heartfelt, and at times humorous story, A Different Kind Of Life spawned a major motion picture along with international acclaim and remains the definitive account of Formula Oneâs most famous family.
In a similar vein to Kimi RĂ€ikkönenâs retirement, but on a more somber note, Sir Frank Williams passed away in 2021; as such, there is no better time than now to read the trials and tribulations of one of Formula Oneâs most celebrated figures.

3. Murray Walker: Unless Iâm Very Much Mistaken
Published in 2003 and written by Murray Walker himself, this book shifts the focus away from Formula One drivers and principals and instead focuses on the familiar, public face of one of the sportâs most well-known commentators and public figures.
Named after his now-famous catchphrase Unless Iâm Very Much Mistaken is an autobiographical account of a figure that introduced millions of viewers to the previously inaccessible world of Formula One.
As the model and blueprint for future commentators, the book follows Murray Walkerâs journey through childhood under his British motorcycle champion father Graham Walker, his service in World War Two, and his failed motor racing career.
Fortunately for fans of motorsport, his failure as a racer resulted in his appointment into the BBC commentary box, where his passion, insights, and unique delivery helped shift Formula One from obscurity into a globally popular sport.
Not one to mince his words, Murray Walker provides first-hand accounts and opinions on the evolution of Formula One, the passing of Aryton Senna, his partnership with the enigmatic James Hunt, and his thoughts on numerous drivers.
With close to 50 years of experience as a commentator and analyst, this autobiography is a must-read for any Formula One fan that owes their allegiance to the sport as a result of world-class commentators such as Murray Walker.
4. Total Competition
Published by Simon & Schuster in 2017 and written by Ross Brawn with the assistance of Adam Parr, Total Competition: Lessons in Strategy from Formula One is a hybrid combination of modern motorsport philosophy and practical life lessons.
As one of the most successful technical directors and team principals in Formula One history, Ross Brawn draws on four decades of experience with Benetton, Ferrari, Honda, Brawn, and Mercedes to paint a picture of both defeat and triumph.
Reflective and inspiring, the book reflects on the authorâs interactions with world champion drivers such as Michael Schumacher, Jenson Button, and Lewis Hamilton to unpack successful (and unsuccessful) strategies and life lessons.
In contrast to their control and success in the pit lane, the book also provides a brutally honest account of the cutthroat nature of Formula One, where coming second is not an option, and how these pressures led to direct conflict with Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone.
This book is recommended for more seasoned Formula One fans that want to have a better understanding of the strategies of the sport and who may wish to implement this âwin-at-all-costsâ mentality into their own lives.
5. To Hell And Back: Niki Lauda
Published first in 1986, with a later revised version in 2021 by Ebury Publishing, this autobiography (written with the assistance of Herbert Volker and E.J Crocket) follows the life of one of Formula Oneâs greatest racing drivers.
Having been immortalized in Formula One folklore and the 2003 blockbuster film Rush , Niki Lauda has become famous for his tenacity and grit as both a driver and survivor of a life-threatening crash in 1976 that left him permanently disfigured.
Analytical, thoughtful, and fearlessly determined, this autobiography is written with Niki Laudaâs âno-nonsenseâ approach to life and work, outlying his challenges and rivalries throughout the years with his signature calmness and insight.
A raw and, at times challenging read, given Niki Laudaâs strict childhood, parental disapproval, and visceral depictions of pain he suffered while racing just 33 days after his Nurburgring crash; To Hell And Back is an unfiltered look at the life and philosophies of one of the sportâs most decorated champions.
6. Chequered Conflict
Published in 2008 by Simon & Schuster by Maurice Hamilton, Chequered Conflict: The Inside Story on Two Explosive F1 World Championships follows one of the greatest Formula One seasons of all time, that being the 2007 World Championship.
As the first season since 1986 to feature three drivers entering the final race of the year with the possibility of being crowned world champion, the book chronicles Lewis Hamilton, Kimi RÀikkönen, and Fernando Alonso throughout the season.
Following the drama both on and off the track, including allegations of spying between McLaren and Ferrari, this book explores one of the greatest seasons for fans while also highlighting the millions of pounds in fines and ill feelings between teams and the FIA that nearly threatened the global integrity of the sport.
Penned by an award-winning journalist with over 30 years of experience, Maurice Hamilton expertly weaves a story of drama, conflict, and triumph while contrasting 2007 with 1986 for a holistic review and evolution of the sport over the years.
7. Life In The Fast Lane
Independently published in 2018 by author Steve Matchett Life in the Fast Lane is the first book in the critically acclaimed Formula 1 Trilogy (the other two being: The Mechanics Tale and The Chariot Makers â both of which come highly recommended!).
The book takes a unique approach to story-telling, rejecting a grand narrative in favor of monthly diary entries from a Benneton grand prix mechanic time during the teamâs turbulent 1994 season.
Responsible for catapulting author Steve Matchett from a self-published author to an internationally acclaimed commentator and analyst, Life in the Fast Lane ignores the glamor of Formula One and turns the lens on the gritty and difficult world of the pit lane and behind the scenes life on the road.
Providing a first-hand account of Verstappenâs fiery explosion at Hockenheim, the death of Senna, the penalties imposed upon teams throughout the heated season, and the collision between Schumacher and Hill to finalize the season; the book remains essential reading for any fan of the sport.
8. Winning Is Not Enough
Published in 2009 by Headline and written by Sir Jackie Stewart, this autobiography follows one of Formula Oneâs greatest and most esoteric racing drivers.
Sporting his signature black cap, sideburns, and aviator sunglasses, Jackie Stewartâs domination throughout the 1960s and 1970s are given first-hand recognition as he powered his way to three Formula One World Championship titles.
However, despite his success on the track and his personal life leading up to his career as one of the greatest drivers of all time, his emergence as an internationally acclaimed businessman through a miasma of celebrity and controversy provides insight into life post-racing, which few books on this list explore.
9. My Greatest Defeat
Published in 2019 Evro Publishing and written by Will Buxton (with beautiful illustrations from Giuseppe Camuncoli of DC and Marvel fame), My Greatest Defeat: Stories of hardship and hope from motor racingâs finest heroes is a must-read anthology.
While not strictly a Formula One book, as it covers stories from 20 of the greatest racing drivers of all time across Formula One, Indycar, NASCAR, Le Mans, and Rally, it remains an F1 staple for its cross pollination of stories across motorsport.
Featuring some of the biggest names in Formula One, including but not limited to Niki Lauda, Damon Hill, Alain Prost, Jackie Stewart, Felipe Masa, Mika HĂ€kkinen, and Carlos Sainz, the book covers the flip side of success â that being defeat.
While at times grim and challenging, the book is a celebration of grit and determination overcoming hardships of some of the greatest drivers of all time, be they personal, financial, or health struggles, many of which are a direct result of the high octane, dangerous world of motorsports.
Stretching across decades, sports, and focusing on a multitude of world-class drivers, this anthology and its use of illustrations is easily one of the most unique experiences for fans of all motorsport on the market.
10. Jensen Button: Life To The Limit
Published in 2018 by Blink Publishing, this autobiography explores the life of Formula One world champion and subsequent Sky Sports commentator Jenson Button.
As one of the most seasoned Formula One drivers with over seventeen years of racing experience, the book follows Buttonâs career from nursing underpowered vehicles around the track to his extraordinary world championship win in 2009.
His extraordinary win with the unsponsored and unfancied Brawn GP team stands as a testament to Buttonâs time as a Formula One racer and the mediaâs portrayal of a disinterested playboy with minimal to no prospects of success in the sport.
Outside of open and honest reflections of his relationship with his motorsport enthusiast family members, rivals such as Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, and Fernando Alonso and Formula One figures such as Bernie Ecclestone, Frank Williams, Ron Dennis, and Ross Brawn are first-hand accounts of racing.
To this end, Jenson Button portrays the actual sensation of racing better than most other Formula One drivers; whereby his follow-up book How To Be An F1 Driver: My Guide To Life In The Fast Lane is recommended as a complementary novel.
11. Formula 1: The Official History
Published in 2020 by Wellbeck Publishing and written by the aforementioned Maurice Hamilton, Formula 1: The Official History stands more as a centerpiece of Formula One literature rather than as a showcase of individual stories.
Beautifully illustrated, this hardcover book traces the history of Formula One from its first race on the 13 th of May 1950, all through the 70 editions of the Driverâs Championship up until the 2020 season.
Given unprecedented access to all areas of the sport, the book charters the history of the sport in excruciating detail, outlining the highs and lows of the sport, including but not limited to: driver profiles, records, socio-political growth and diversity, safety, and performance innovations, and rule changes.
Leaving no stone unturned, this celebration of one of the worldâs most popular and glamorous sports is well suited in the collections of new and veteran fans alike!
12. Senna Versus Prost
Published in 2010 by Random House and written by Malcolm Folley, Senna Versus Prost tells the story of arguably Formula Oneâs greatest rivalry between who many considered two of the greatest Formula One drivers of all time.
For the majority of fans and competitors the primary appeal of Formula One is the rivalries that develop between drivers and teams during a season, many of which result in conflict, drama, and tension both on and off the track.
While originally McLaren teammates, the clash of personalities and driving styles created a rift between Alain Prost and Aryton Senna, resulting in hostilities that extended beyond them no longer being teammates in subsequent seasons.
Alain Prost, as Franceâs sole Formula One champion, epitomized his moniker of âLe Professeurâ with an intelligent, smooth driving style; this was seen in contrast to Aryton Sennaâs intense and ruthless driving, which earned the Brazilian driver a fierce reputation.
Sadly, the rivalry would come to a tragic end with Sennaâs fatal crash at Imola in 1994. However, with insights from Martin Brundle, Damon Hill, Sir Frank Williams, Bernie Ecclestone, Derek Warrick, Johnny Herbert, and Gerhard Berger, the lasting intensity of this rivalry has continued through Formula One folklore.
13. Watching the Wheels: My Autobiography
Published in 2016 by Macmillan, this autobiography marked the twentieth anniversary of Damon Hillâs coronation as Formula One world champion.
In doing so, Damon Hill managed to step out of the long shadow cast by legendary father Graham Hill and won the 1996 World Championship in one of the golden eras of the sport, having competed against both Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna on his way to victory.
Watching The Wheels takes an unflinching look at the realities of Formula One and the dangers the sport presents, whereby this confrontation with oneâs mortality has haunted Damon Hill from the age of 15 as a result of his fatherâs early and tragic demise in an aircraft accident in 1975.
Further to this honest and candid exploration of his own mortality comes with his exploration of his teammate, Ayrton Sennaâs death in 1994 and what this meant for Damon Hill as a teammate, rival, competitor, and father of a racing driver himself.
Formula One drivers during one of the golden eras of the sport often seemed to exhibit a desire for thrills at the expense of safety (when compared to modern machinery and safety standards).
As a difficult concept to grasp and rationalize for third-party observers, Graham Hill seeks to bridge this gap in understanding and does so openly and honestly.
14. Flat Out Flat Broke: The Original Stig
Originally published in 2013 by PerryMcCarthy, this autobiography has become a subsequent bestseller and remains one of the most unique and humorous stories to arise out of the world of motorsport.
While the focus of the book is not entirely centered on Formula One, it does follow the life of ex-Formula One driver Perry McCarthy and how, at the age of 18, he opted to break into the worldâs most expensive sport with no money, sponsorship, familial connections or racing experience!
Despite these challenges Perry âMad Dogâ McCarthy achieved his dreams through a rollercoaster adventure both on and off the track, which eventually cumulated in his alter ego as âThe Stigâ on BBCâs Top Gear and international stardom.
At times âlaugh out loudâ funny, and at other times, a heartfelt and challenging read, Flat Out Flat Broke: The Original Stig, weaves a narrative unseen in the history of motorsport.
15. How To Build A Car
Published in 2017 by HarperCollins How to Build a Car: The Autobiography of the Worldâs Greatest Formula 1 Designer is a fascinating, humanizing memoir of one of Britainâs greatest engineers.
Considered by many to be a true engineering genius, this autobiography explores Adrian Neweyâs deep fascination with cars from his early sketches as a 12-year-old student at a welding summer school, all the way up till his breakthrough designs in IndyCar and Formula One over the course of his 35-year career.
With beautiful illustrations along with comprehensive, passionate, engaging, and detailed descriptions of the design process, Adrian Newey successfully demystifies and engages with the reader over some of the most complex feats of engineering in the history of the sport.
16. The Edge Of Greatness
Published in 2008 by Headline and written by James Allen, The Edge Of Greatness is considered to be one of the most thorough and honest explorations of Michael Schumacherâs entire career.
Arguably the greatest driver of all time, trying to select just one Michael Schumacher biography for this list proved a daunting task, The Edge Of Greatness uncovers the true nature of both the sport and driver: unrelenting ruthlessness.
A controversial figure, role model, and for many fans watching in the 90s and early 2000s, Michael Schumacher remains the face of Formula One over a career that extended over 15 seasons from his time at Jordan to the accumulation of seven world championships by his retirement.
Although the book was published prior to Schumacherâs tragic skiing accident and does not explore this aspect of his life, the details housed within explore the career and life of a driver that has seldom been topped by any other piece of media.
Formula One is a diverse, detailed, and expansive sport that has created its fair share of tragedies, victories, innovations, heroes, and villains over its long 70-year history.
Fortunately, this means that there is a wealth of literature that all people can enjoy, the above list being but a snippet of content for intrepid readers to embark on!

How rogues, geniuses, and speed freaks reengineered f1 into the world's fastest-growing sport.
by Joshua Robinson & Jonathan Clegg ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 12, 2024
A thrill for fans of F1, and a fine example of fluid sportswriting.
An appropriately fast-paced narrative of Formula 1 auto racing, whose popularity is exploding.
Wall Street Journal European sportswriter Robinson and editor Clegg, co-authors of The Club , begin their narrative in Bahrain with a cast of drivers âwithout normal human fear receptors.â The drivers represent various brands of race cars whose makers are applying space launchâlevel science (and budgets) to make their cars cut through the air milliseconds faster than the competition, physics and engineering at play in âa competition where the most decisive action of the season can take place not on the trackâŠbut in a wind tunnel simulation.â Perhaps improbably, F1 has become a hugely successful sport of lateââimprobablyâ because, compared to, say, soccer, which doesnât require an operatorâs manual, F1 racing appeals to the inner Einstein as well as the inner Andretti in all of us: âThe only way to win championships is to land a series of technical moon shotsâand then do it all over again.â As Robinson and Clegg note, profiling drivers and deal-makers alike, F1âs success has come as a result of a steadily growing franchise that has taken races worldwide, starting in Europe and then across the oceans to places as large as China and the U.S. and as small as Singapore, all masterminded by genius entrepreneur Bernie Ecclestone. Along with him came sponsors with the shrewdness to recognize that many F1 drivers were âovercaffeinated adrenaline junkies with scant regard for their personal safetyâ but a solid appreciation for big purses. Meanwhile, other entrepreneurs and players remade the sport from an arcane pastime to a species of mass entertainment that, the authors suggest in closing, has become something of âa post-sport sport,â capable of being appreciated without ever watching a single race.

POVERTY, BY AMERICA
by Matthew Desmond ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 21, 2023
A clearly delineated guide to finally eradicate poverty in America.
A thoughtful program for eradicating poverty from the Pulitzer Prizeâwinning author of Evicted .
âAmericaâs poverty is not for lack of resources,â writes Desmond. âWe lack something else.â That something else is compassion, in part, but itâs also the lack of a social system that insists that everyone pull their weightâand that includes the corporations and wealthy individuals who, the IRS estimates, get away without paying upward of $1 trillion per year. Desmond, who grew up in modest circumstances and suffered poverty in young adulthood, points to the deleterious effects of being poorâamong countless others, the precarity of health care and housing (with no meaningful controls on rent), lack of transportation, the constant threat of losing oneâs job due to illness, and the need to care for dependent children. It does not help, Desmond adds, that so few working people are represented by unions or that Black Americans, even those who have followed the âthree rulesâ (graduate from high school, get a full-time job, wait until marriage to have children), are far likelier to be poor than their White compatriots. Furthermore, so many full-time jobs are being recast as contracted, fire-at-will gigs, ânot a break from the norm as much as an extension of it, a continuation of corporations finding new ways to limit their obligations to workers.â By Desmondâs reckoning, besides amending these conditions, it would not take a miracle to eliminate poverty: about $177 billion, which would help end hunger and homelessness and âmake immense headway in driving down the many agonizing correlates of poverty, like violence, sickness, and despair.â These are matters requiring systemic reform, which will in turn require Americans to elect officials who will enact that reform. And all of us, the author urges, must become âpoverty abolitionistsâŠrefusing to live as unwitting enemies of the poor.â Fortune 500 CEOs wonât like Desmondâs message for rewriting the social contractâwhich is precisely the point.

PERSPECTIVES
SEEN & HEARD
THE CULTURE MAP
Breaking through the invisible boundaries of global business.
by Erin Meyer ‧ RELEASE DATE: May 27, 2014
These are not hard and fast rules, but Meyer delivers important reading for those engaged in international business.
A helpful guide to working effectively with people from other cultures.
âThe sad truth is that the vast majority of managers who conduct business internationally have little understanding about how culture is impacting their work,â writes Meyer, a professor at INSEAD, an international business school. Yet they face a wider array of work styles than ever before in dealing with clients, suppliers and colleagues from around the world. When is it best to speak or stay quiet? What is the role of the leader in the room? When working with foreign business people, failing to take cultural differences into account can lead to frustration, misunderstanding or worse. Based on research and her experiences teaching cross-cultural behaviors to executive students, the author examines a handful of key areas. Among others, they include communicating (Anglo-Saxons are explicit; Asians communicate implicitly, requiring listeners to read between the lines), developing a sense of trust (Brazilians do it over long lunches), and decision-making (Germans rely on consensus, Americans on one decider). In each area, the author provides a âculture map scaleâ that positions behaviors in more than 20 countries along a continuum, allowing readers to anticipate the preferences of individuals from a particular country: Do they like direct or indirect negative feedback? Are they rigid or flexible regarding deadlines? Do they favor verbal or written commitments? And so on. Meyer discusses managers who have faced perplexing situations, such as knowledgeable team members who fail to speak up in meetings or Indians who offer a puzzling half-shake, half-nod of the head. Cultural differencesânot personality quirksâare the motivating factors behind many behavioral styles. Depending on our cultures, we understand the world in a particular way, find certain arguments persuasive or lacking merit, and consider some ways of making decisions or measuring time natural and others quite strange.

I wouldnât even know where to start in describing how the cars work â but fortunately Steve Rendle does. His new book âFormula 1 Technology â The Engineering Explainedâ is the perfect primer for anyone interested in the technical aspect of the sport. As a piece of research and technical writing made accessible, it is a true achievement.
After a brief chapter spinning through the evolution of Formula 1 cars from the inaugural 1950 season to the present day, the structure of the book follows a component-by-component – chassis, power unit, aerodynamics, etcetera – explanation of how a Formula 1 car works.
Managing to be both comprehensive and accessible, ‘Formula 1 Technology’ is easy to dip into, making it the perfect sofa companion during a grand prix weekend for unpicking the updates from the pitlane. The challenge with books in this territory is balancing the detail level between novice-friendly and doctorate, and it is rare to see it done as well as this. Comprehensive illustrations also helpfully clarify some of the finer points.
While trade secrets arenât exactly given away, it is also clear that Rendle has had first-hand observation of the workings of modern F1 cars, giving insider credibility that could easily be lacking otherwise. I found the chapters about testing and set-up particularly fascinating.
For the F1 fan with a technical interest, this is a must-have. Particularly at the start of a new season when understanding those winter tweaks is paramount.

Who’s Steve Rendle??
MichaelN 13th March 2023, 14:50
Rendle’s work on the ‘Red Bull Formula 1 Car Manual’ was pretty good, so a more general take on modern F1 cars probably suits his style and knowledge well. I see on the publisher’s website that they’re using a mixture of photos, drawings (most of them seemingly by Giorgio Piola) and a few renders from third parties. Piola isn’t the quickest, and the drawings seem to reflect that in being a couple of years old. Not a big issue given the concepts are largely unchanged (and I suspect there’ll be more current images in the part not shown in the preview about current floor designs).
Evro can sometimes be a bit off with their measurements, but from the few units used on the preview pages it seems they’ve kept a global audience in mind and used appropriate standard measurement units.
One quibble;
At the very forefront of mechanical and technical design, their performance and reliability is astounding â as is their complexity.
F1 is actually quite behind the times on a lot of mechanical and technical aspects, but there are good competitive justifications for most of those limitations. They’re definitely pushing what they can use to their extremes, though.

Best Formula 1 Books
Page Contents
When youâre looking for the best Formula 1 books to buy and read, one of the biggest problems you come across is that all the reviews are the same â copied and pasted from Amazon. Also, how do you know if the books you like are what the reviewer likes?
The Formula 1 books below have been read by me, not just copied and pasted from other listings. I like books that share stories, that get into the emotion of the subject and leave you feeling something. Iâm not a facts and figures guys, so a book full of dates, cold facts, and specifications will have me putting the book back on the shelf half-read.
I like my books like I like my F1 â fast-paced and dramatic.
So if youâre like me, the below Formula 1 books will be for youâŠ
The Best Formula 1 Books
Life to the limit: my autobiography by jenson button.
This is actually my favourite Formula 1 book, which is why it is at the top of the list. When you read it, you canât help but have the voice of Jenson Button in your head, which makes his jokes funnier (and this is a very funny book). While there is a lot of humour, often self-deprecating, the tone definitely takes a turn and you canât help but be moved when Jenson talks about losing his father.
Some of the chapters are super short too, as in a handful of pages, so if youâre someone who likes to read before bed and has to finish at the end of a chapter, this book will make sure you get to bed at a reasonable hour.

Senna versus Prost
Before I read Jensonâs book, Senna versus Prost was my favourite.
Malcolm Folley has done a cracking job of creating a space for people to share their stories of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost in a way that instantly transports the reader back to those great battles of the 80s and 90s.
Whatâs even better is Folley speaks with a lot of team personnel, people in the background who weâve not really heard of, and lets us know what it was really like to be on the ground as the battles took place out on the track.
So much has been made of Ayrton Senna over the years, that Prostâs version of events was somewhat overlooked â until now. And although he could have used the book as an opportunity to lay the boots into his rival, Prost does a brilliant job of relaying events as he saw them.
Le Professeur off the track as well as on it.

Murray Walker: Unless I’m Very Much Mistaken
Murray Walker is the voice of Formula 1. He has one of those voices that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up when youâre watching an old race and his enthusiasm for F1 jumps through the speakers.
Some artists use paints, some use pencils, Murray Walker used a microphone.
Walker is a quintessential storyteller, so once again this is a book that you will most likely read in his voice. He tells vivid stories about growing up, his time in the war, all the way through to the Murray Walker we know from our TV screens commentating on Formula 1.
Known for the odd gaff in the commentary box, Walker isnât shy about having a laugh with it, and understands it helped endear him to fans over the years.
Unless Iâm very much mistaken, this is a must-read book that you will thoroughly enjoy.
Niki Lauda – The Biography
If a book about a man who had a horrific crash at the wheel of a Formula 1 racing car, was given the last rights, then was back on the grid a month later doesnât move you, then nothing will.
Niki Lauda was a man of little fuss or sentiment, and Maurice Hamilton has written this book in much the same vein. Starting from Lauda’s early days growing up in a proper family who felt motor racing was beneath their station, to his racing years, to flying, and much more.
If there is to be one criticism of this book, itâs that it doesnât go into a great deal of detail on his time with Mercedes. However, the vivid recollections of his racing days from people who witnessed it definitely make up for this.

The Unknown Kimi RÀikkönen
The Unknown Kimi RĂ€ikkönen gives great insights into Kimiâs path to F1, his upbringing, and now the importance of time with his growing family.
If youâre looking for a book of anecdotes from Kimiâs time in the paddock, this book isnât it.
But if you want to learn more about Kimiâs path to F1, his motivation for quitting the sport, and his motivation for coming back to it.
The photos he shares are excellent too.

Aussie Grit: My Formula One Journey
This is one that most Australianâs will love, as the Aussie legend shares anecdotes or âyarnsâ from his time in F1 racing against some of the best drivers on the planet.
Those who remember the âMulti 21â saga and breakdown in the relationship with Sebastian Vettel will like this book, as Webber gives his version of the events that unfolded in front of our eyes on race days.
A highlight of this book is Webber walking us through his personal struggles, as itâs not something often associated with the stoic Australian. This book is brutally honest in parts, and will give you a deeper appreciation of the man, not just the driver.

The Mechanic: The Secret World of the F1 Pitlane
Marc ‘Elvis’ Priestley was one the number one mechanic at McLaren, who as well as this book has an incredible YouTube channel where he shares his insights and analysis of Formula 1 regularly.
Simply put, his book needs to be on the bookshelf of every Formula 1 fan, itâs that good.
Iâll admit Iâd never really thought about the pit crew. We see them for a few seconds each race, maybe more if something dramatic happens to one of their drivers.
This book takes us well and truly behind the scenes, into the life of partying and fast-living away from the track.
Priestley also shares a lot of secrets about the rivalries he was part of during his time in F1, which may make him a little unpopular with a few peopleâŠ

Chequered Conflict: The Inside Story on Two Explosive F1 World Championships
You could be forgiven for thinking this book by Maurice Hamilton is the work of a family member of Lewis Hamilton, but itâs not. Maurice Hamilton is the author of amazing F1 history books on the likes of James Hunt, Niki Lauda, Jackie Stewart, Frank Williams, and more.
Grand Prix racing in 2007 and 2008 was an explosive affair between Ferrari and McLaren, and this book captures all the drama perfectly.
2007 was the first time since 1986 that three drivers had a chance of winning the title going into the final race, and this book puts you back on the edge of your seat again as you re-live this piece of F1 history.

The Mechanic’s Tale
This book by Steve Matchett is quite different to The Mechanic: The Secret World of the F1 Pitlane in that it is more about the author’s life, from trying desperately to break into the world of Formula 1. Although heâs not a racing driver, the struggles he faced are on par with some of the drivers mentioned in the books above.
Steve Matchett also shares a lot of his own eye-witness accounts of some of the greats such as Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna, and Michael Schumacher. Plus there is a lot on his time with Benetton which is great reading.

Flat Out Flat Broke: The Original Stig
When you think of Formula 1, names like Lewis Hamilton, Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill and Jackie Stewart come to mind straight away, but what about Perry McCarthy? No? Didnât think so.
McCarthy spent the 1992 Formula 1 season âracingâ for the Andrea Moda Formula team, but unfortunately, never qualified for a Grand Prix.
That hasnât stopped him from writing a hilarious autobiography that has already become a motorsport best seller.
While he didnât have much luck in F1, or in a lot of other things, McCarthy bounced back to become the first âStigâ on TopGear.
If you want to share a story with someone you care about that will inspire them to chase their dreams and never give up, then this is the one to give them. They donât even need to be a Formula 1 fan to enjoy this one.

Visually, the book is a treat. Packed with a curated selection of photographs, many of which have never been seen before, it offers a pictorial history that complements the rich narrative. These images, spanning the sport’s inception to its modern-day glory, not only chart its progression but also capture the passion, danger, and excitement that is quintessentially Formula 1.

Formula One: The Pursuit of Speed: A Photographic Celebration of F1’s Greatest Moments (Volume 1)
In the grand tapestry of Formula 1 literature, Maurice Hamilton’s “Formula One: The Pursuit of Speed” emerges as a visual masterpieceâa symphonic blend of gripping narratives and breathtaking photography that encapsulates the essence of the sport.
Hamilton, with his vast experience as a seasoned motorsport journalist, takes the reins and navigates the reader through an odyssey of Formula 1’s most iconic moments. But what sets this volume apart is its visual emphasis. Through a curated selection of photographs, many of which remain unparalleled in their raw intensity, the book immortalizes moments that define the very ethos of F1: the split-second decisions, the balletic dance of cars on a rain-soaked track, the sheer euphoria of a podium finish, and the heart-wrenching despair of a race gone awry.
The book’s title, “The Pursuit of Speed,” is not just a descriptor but a theme that reverberates throughout its pages. Speed is not merely chronicled as a measure of distance over time but is celebrated as an art, an obsession, and sometimes, a cruel mistress. Hamilton’s accompanying prose is both insightful and evocative, fleshing out the stories behind the images, providing context, and often drawing the reader into the world of roaring engines and tire smoke.
Each photograph, meticulously chosen, becomes a story in itself, capturing fleeting moments that might otherwise have been lost in the annals of history. The book pays homage not just to the titans of the track but also to the unsung heroes, the pioneering engineers, the dauntless crew, and the legion of fans whose collective spirit fuels the spectacle of Formula 1.
Hamilton’s “Formula One: The Pursuit of Speed” is not just a historical account. It is a testament to the sport’s legacy, a tribute to its indomitable spirit, and a celebration of its relentless quest for perfection. The book stands as a veritable treasure trove for both seasoned enthusiasts and those new to the sport, providing an unparalleled, immersive experience of the world of Formula 1.
This volume offers more than a retrospective lookâit is a journey, a visual feast, and an ode to the world of Formula 1. Through Hamilton’s masterful curation and eloquent narration, “Formula One: The Pursuit of Speed” establishes itself as a must-have addition to the library of any motorsport aficionado.

More than just a chronicle of cars, it is a tribute to the timeless allure of the Prancing Horse in the world of Formula 1. An unmissable read, this book is set to become a cornerstone in the collection of every motorsport aficionado.
