As you know that today our Yoga Group Foundation has successfully completed one year, so today’s event has been organized to celebrate this one-year achievement. On this auspicious day, please allow me to heartily congratulate and express words of gratitude to our members of Yoga Group Foundation who worked hard to spread awareness among the masses about the benefit of yoga and helped made available necessary resources to make this one-year session a harbinger of bodily health and fitness with mental happiness. Also, I want to thank all the society people who never missed a day and showed enthusiasm to learn this art form and spread the teaching amongst others.

I, Nandini, your host for today’s event and one of the co-founders of this group wish to deliver a short speech on Yoga – the science behind it and forms its essence.

Many of us perform Yoga on a daily basis, but how many actually know about what this art form entails and why it is performed. So it’s basically a method to achieve balance in our bodies, i.e. gaining strength, increasing flexibility and attaining spirituality. Yoga also endorses a non-materialistic way of living. Yoga is more precisely described through the use of the Sanskrit word called “asana” which means the practicing of different types of physical postures or asanas. The yoga postures are an indispensable part of the yoga. Usually, the class begins with normal breathing exercises and then goes on to incorporate gentle asanas followed by more tough ones. The yoga asanas are performed keeping in mind all the body parts as well as combine breathing practices, including guided mediation.

There are different poses for which the instructor guides you throughout; these poses include standing, sitting, back bending, forward bends, upside-down asanas as well as twisting postures. Besides these, there are other different types of yoga which are especially tailored to suit the different needs of people. For instance, there is Hatha Yoga, which is the most practiced form and deals with the breathing exercises and bodily postures. Then there are two other types of yoga, i.e. Karma and Bhakti Yoga, which are advised to people who are looking to gain spiritual experience in life.

This is an art form known to humanity from thousands of years whose history can be traced back to 3,000 BC. I, your senior yoga teacher, heartily welcome everyone to today’s weekly event, of which Yoga is a major highlight. To begin with, I would like to deliver a short speech on Yoga with a view to spread more awareness about this subject amongst you all.

Workout trends come and go, but literally no other form of exercise is as stable as yoga and it has been around for over a period of 5,000 years now. International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21st every year. On June 21st, the world unites in harmony, Celebrating Yoga Day, a global serenity symphony. Yoga helps us way beyond than just burning the calories and toning down our muscles. It’s an all-inclusive workout that focuses on both mind and body. Under yoga training, one performs all kinds of stretching and strengthening poses, including deep breathing, relaxation or meditation.

Currently, over 100 diverse forms of yoga are known, which are rigorous and intense while others are mild and relaxing. There are six different forms of yoga that are well-known today:

  • Hatha – The form is mainly related with yoga and combines a sequence of basic movements, including breathing.
  • Vinyasa – It includes a sequence of poses which smoothly flow from one to the other.
  • Iyengar – It is a type of yoga which makes use of props, such as straps, blocks and chairs in order to help one move his/her body with the proper alignment.
  • Bikram – Also called as “hot yoga”, this form includes a sequence of 26 complex poses performed in a heated room that carries a high temperature.
  • Power – A more rapid, greater-intensity practice that shapes muscles.
  • Ashtanga – A sequence of poses that combines an exceptional breathing technique.

You just name it and you’ll get it! Beautiful, glowing skin; a well-built, flexible body; regulated weight; sound health and calm mind – the benefits of yoga include all this and so much more. However, more often than not yoga is being seen to be restricted to asanas, i.e. poses. This is the reason why its benefits are only identified at the bodily level and we overlook its enormous benefits that yoga offers in bringing together the body and mind. When both your body and mind are in sync with each other, then life becomes more fulfilling and happier than ever before.

So everyone must practice yoga and make it a part of daily routine in order to get a strong, flexible and supple body. Its regular practice helps improve your body posture while you walk, sit or sleep. This will in turn also help you relive your body pain owing to inappropriate postures.

Yoga when combined with meditation has the power to better your intuitive skills so that you can quickly ascertain what is required to be done, when it is to be done and how in order to gain positive results. This does work wonders and you can experience the change yourself only when you practice it without fail.

Remember yoga is a never ending process. The deeper you delve into it, the more fruitful will be the results. That’s all I can say.

Today, the knowledge and practice of yoga is getting disseminated all around the world and which is a very good thing. In yoga, we get to learn about many body postures or poses for keeping ourselves fit such as sitting, standing, forward bending, backward bending, upside-down postures etc. There are uncountable poses in yoga.

Many poses are required flexibility such as plow pose, pigeon pose, upward bow pose, fish pose etc; and many people does not have enough flexibility in their bodies, so there are many other poses which do not require high flexibility such as the perfect pose, mountain pose, chair pose, triangle pose etc . As there are uncountable poses, so there are uncountable benefits of practicing yoga also. Benefits defers from one pose to another. Practicing yoga is absolutely worthy and it has the potential to cure many diseases like respiratory problems, abdominal problems, diseases related to nervous system etc. It helps in reliving negativity and toxins from our body. It helps in reducing stress level and increasing awareness. Especially for children, it helps in building concentration power and focus. It can be said that it is a best medicine for curing respiratory problems and also works best for abdominal diseases like stomach ache and infections. It also helps in enhancing personality because automatically, if a person is disease free then he or she will look good and healthy.

After getting aware about all these benefits, I hope that many among you people are willing to pursue yoga for living a healthy life because we all know that health is wealth .

As this is a special day for our organization so, today our organization is giving a free trial session of three days to all the people who are interested in yoga. It is said that on this day, the first yogi (Adi Guru) begun imparting the knowledge of yoga to the rest of mankind and became the first yoga guru.

As a head girl of this school, I would like to grab this opportunity to say a few words on highlighting the importance and benefits of yoga. I hope it may help you in understanding about yoga as an essential part of our daily life.

Many people wonder that what is yoga and how it can help in maintaining physical and mental stability? Yoga is a process for the union of body and mind or we can say that it is a process of maintaining stability between body and mind. In ancient period, yoga was a way of attaining enlightenment. In today’s world of high technology and hectic life, yoga is playing an important role in maintaining fitness and mental stability in our body and mind. It consists of various poses and postures of the body and in Sanskrit language we call it “ asanas ”. Some poses or asanas are complicated and therefore they need proper implications but some of them are very simple and can be practiced on our own. Many people choose to join yoga classes but some people who are not comfortable at classes, so they could buy yoga DVDs that are available in markets.

The formation of different kinds of yoga has been done to reach the solutions of different problems of people. Many people practice yoga on daily basis and hence they know the effects and positive changes that occurs in their body and life due to yoga. There could be no instant effect but if it is practiced on daily basis then the results could be seem. Yoga should become an integral part of our life just like sleeping and eating.

The benefits of yoga are infinite and it has the potential to cure many diseases. Many people are practicing yoga in today’s world to remain healthy. For aged people who cannot do intensive exercises, yoga proves to be a best choice for them. In yoga, we practice postures on the basis of its difficulty. We should start with a simple pose and then pursue for a difficult one.

Many people and even small kids have respiratory problems these days due to air pollution and lack of fresh air. In yoga, there are many poses and exercises that have the potential to cure respiratory problems. But not only respiratory but also it helps in curing many other diseases related to our nervous system, abdominal problems, joint problems etc. For instance, “ bending poses” are done for strengthening joints and muscles, “ balancing poses ” are done for strengthening arms and legs, “seated yoga poses ” are done for flexibility and reliving mental stress, “supine yoga poses” are done for flexibility and there are many other different kinds of poses.

Speech on Yoga: Ancient Yogic way of living is considered as one of the six traditional schools of Indian philosophies. Yoga is the culmination of physical, mental, spiritual and holistic ways of leading life. This discipline is said to have originated in India from more than 5,000 years. ‘Yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuj’, which means to ‘unite’. Yoga helps improve health and prevent diseases through physical exercises, breath control, relaxation techniques, diet, meditation and positive approach.

Below we have provided Yoga Speech in English, written in easy and simple words for class 7, 8, 9 and 10 school students.

Good morning to everyone present. Today is International Yoga Day 2021. We have been celebrating since its inception in the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. Taking this opportunity, I would like to speak a few words on its benefits and why we need to incorporate yoga in our daily life. Yoga is a science of bringing balance between mind and body. It is an art of healthy living and is deeply rooted in our Indian Culture since ancient times.

Yoga is connected to spiritual discipline and is originated from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuj’ meaning to join or to unite. It was initiated by Lord Shiva, who is also known as Adiyogi. Our Rishi, Sages and Saints have been practising and disseminating the same to the people. India being the pioneer, helped other countries realize its benefits and spiritual meaning affixed to it.

Also, there are different types of postures known as Asanas which forms the essential part of it. The poses are in alliance with breathing methods by keeping in mind all aspects of the body. Moreover, Gautama Buddha and Vardhaman Mahavir were too, patrons of yoga. They preached five great vows and eightfold path by keeping in consideration the yoga sadhana.

Even in Bhagwat Gita, the holy book of Hindus yoga is distinguished into three parts known as Gyan, Bhakti and Karma yoga. Yogic likes Gorakhnath, Mastyandranath and Shrinivasa Bhatt, popularised Hatha yoga. It works on the principle of integration of mind, body, emotion and energy. Every element of the body works in synergy to provide healthy well-being and peace. It assists in becoming a part of the universe by eradicating undesirable components of life.

Mind yoga calms our nervous system by reducing stress. The cells become active and get ready to perform tasks effectively. The level of concentration and focus increases drastically. A person feels full of energy and looks forward to start the day with positive vibes. Yoga not only develops physical strength but inner will too. Discipline and regulation bring order in day to day life which in turn helps in evading chaos.

It supports systematic living in sync with nature. The asana is related to the elements of nature and explains the benefit of living with it harmoniously. The immune system advances further contributing to better health and a resilient body. The white and red blood corpuscles fight diseases better and in an efficient way. Individuals with respiratory problems find development in the lungs.

Inhalation and exhalation improve. Digestive disorders like ulcers, ulcerative colitis and irritative bowls are brought under control through Kapalbhati. It also eases constipation. In conclusion, it is a way of life as an individual mind gets free from apprehensions. People develop positive energy to resist temptations and depression gracefully.

Yoga helps in healing and self-care. Relationships with family, friends, colleagues and others improve as it develops compassion and equality. Life will not be seen as a problem, and people will enjoy every aspect willingly and happily. I feel grateful and honoured to be born in India and thank everyone who attended this day and graced this occasion with enthusiasm.

Good morning respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends. As we are promoting health and fitness week, I have been handed over the opportunity to deliver the significance and relevance of yoga before you. It is a privilege to speak over art which was discovered and mastered in India since ancient times. Workout trends come and go but what remains in trend forever is yoga.

It not only improves our health but develops well-being. The skin radiates, and the body achieves flexibility-meditation with yoga results in a peaceful and relaxed mind. Utthasana, Padmasana, Bhujhangasana and Sarvangasana are some of the asana’s mentioned in it. These help in sharpening minds and lets the brain utilize the intellect to the fullest.

Yoga provides relief from the regular stressful routine and improves sleep. By following it regularly symptoms of insomnia and restlessness decreases. It is beneficial especially to children as they gain focus and concentration, further building their power and making them academically strong. But, the development of technology and gadgets have impaired humanity by converting them into lethargic individuals.

To make the culture and tradition of yoga alive, The United Nations declared June 21st as the International Day of Yoga in 2014, following a proposal by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The purpose of celebrating International Yoga Day is to promote the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of practicing yoga and to raise awareness about its positive impact on individual well-being and global harmony.

Now-a-days, millions and millions of people across the globe have benefitted by the practice of Yoga. Let us discuss some of the visible benefits of yoga.

  • One of the first and most noticeable benefits of yoga is increased flexibility.
  • Regular yoga practice can help people with various types of arthritis in reducing joint pain.
  • Yoga also boosts circulation and blood flow, thus reducing the risks of heart diseases.
  • The emotional benefits of yoga are equally profound. It cultivates an awareness of our thoughts and emotions.
  • Moreover, yoga is a gateway to spiritual growth.

Now I want to share some information related to the different types of Yoga. It incorporates self-development techniques and systemic exercises for mind, body, and spirit. These exercises include the limbs, the upper and lower body, and breathing.

There are primarily four types of yoga.

  • The first type is Karma Yoga is the path of doing good for others and not causing any intention harm due to ill will, for instance, the work done by Mother. One can practice this by being kind and helpful.
  • The second type of Yoga is Bhakti Yoga which is developing a connection with the divine through devotional practices like praying, dancing and celebrating the supreme power.
  • The third type is the Jnana Yoga which is referred to as the path of wisdom and intellect one can attain by reading the ancient scriptures.
  • The fourth is called Raja Yoga which is practiced in balancing karma, bhakti, and jnana yoga by integrating the body and mind.

Now let me tell you about the time as well as techniques involve in yoga.

Yoga is usually practiced in the early mornings by starting the day by paying respect to the Sun, by a series of 12 postures called Sun Salutations. While practicing yoga near a lake or in the garden, bliss that one experiences are invaluable, this creates a sense of gratitude to nature and life.

Yoga involves a wide range of practices.

  • Physical postures are known as asanas that are designed to improve flexibility, strength, and balance. Examples include Downward-Facing Dog, Warrior Poses, and Tree Pose.
  • Pranayama i nvolves controlled breathing techniques that regulate the breath and enhance the flow of life force energy (prana).
  • Meditation involves directing the attention inward to quiet the mind’s conversation and achieve mental clarity.
  • Concentration techniques help to train the mind to focus on a single point or thought.

The beauty of yoga lies in its inclusivity. Regardless of age, fitness level, or background, anyone can engage in its practice. Yoga surpasses cultural and geographical boundaries, bringing people from all walks of life together under the banner of wellness and self-discovery.

In conclusion, let’s remember that yoga is not just about touching our toes or standing on our head. It is more than just a physical exercise. It’s about fostering a deeper connection within our self. Yoga invites us to explore the depths of our being to cultivate self-awareness and to embrace a balanced and mindful way of living. You can change the world—or at least your experience of it—by discovering how mindful speaking can change our realities.

At a dinner party I recently attended, the host asked us: “Did your parents ever say something that you’ve carried throughout your life?” As people shared, we were struck by how many of us had been shaped by a parent’s words. The woman whose father had told her,”Whatever you do in life, be the best,” became a successful entrepreneur. The woman who had heard, “Nobody’s looking at you,” spent her career guiding powerful people from the sidelines. Words had literally defined their lives.

The power of words isn’t lost on anyone—just think of the pleasure you feel when someone pays you a sincere compliment, or the discomfort of realizing you’ve spilled a secret you’d promised to keep. Words and the energy they carry make or break friendships and careers ; they define us as individuals and even as cultures. We know this, and yet we often let our words flow out more or less unmediated, like random pebbles tossed into a lake. Sometimes, it’s only when the ripples spread and cause waves, and the waves rush back and splash us, that we stop to think about the way we speak.

The sages of yoga obviously understood the human tendency to run off at the mouth, because many texts of the inner life, from the Upanishads and the Yoga Vasistha to the Bhagavad Gita , counsel us to use words carefully. The Buddha made right speech one of the pillars of his Noble Eightfold Path. On the simplest level, these sages point out, unnecessary speaking wastes energy that could be devoted to self-inquiry and transformative action. More important, though, is the power that words have to change the communal atmosphere, to cause joy or pain, and to create a climate that fosters truth or falsity, kindness or cruelty.

Of course, in an era where unsubstantiated rumors roll endlessly through the blogosphere, where lying and concealment and spin are so much a part of public utterance that words have lost their meaning and most of us automatically suspect anything a public figure says, the very idea of right speech can sound countercultural. And yet, as with so many of the yogic dicta, it makes profound sense. So much of the pain we cause ourselves and each other could be avoided if we were just a bit more discriminating about what we say. Our relationships , our work environment, even our feelings about ourselves, can be transformed simply by taking time to think about how words create reality. Yes, words create reality. That’s an understanding you’ll find in most of the great wisdom traditions, but especially the Vedic and Tantric traditions of India and in the texts of Kabbalah, with which they have so much in common.

The bottom line of the Tantric teaching on words is this: Since everything in existence, including rocks and planets, is made out of different densities of vibration—that is, out of coagulated sound—words are not merely signifiers, but actual powers. The strongest transformative energies are locked into those special words called mantras , which when empowered and properly pronounced, can change the course of a life. But ordinary, mundane words also hold their own vibratory force. All speech, especially speech imbued with strong feeling or emotion, creates waves of energy that radiate through our bodies and into the world, vibrating with complementary word streams and helping to create the atmosphere we live in.

Our bodies and subconscious minds hold the residue of every kind or cruel word we’ve ever taken in. So does the very air and soil. When you feel a particular vibe in a room, chances are that what you notice is the energetic residue of the words that have been spoken there. Words—whether spoken or thought—are constantly altering reality, shifting the vibratory atmosphere in our bodies, in our homes and places of work, in our cities. So the choices we make about what to say and not say are not just of casual importance.

The Practice of Mindful Speaking

To practice right speech is essentially to approach speaking as a form of yoga. The first stage in the yoga of speech is to start becoming conscious of what comes out of your mouth. You might begin by spending a day eavesdropping on yourself—ideally, without activating your inner critic. Try to notice not just what you say but also the tone with which you say it. See if you can sense the emotional residue your words create. How do you feel after certain remarks? How do other people react?

The second step in speech yoga is a form of self-inquiry, in which you ask yourself: What makes me say what I say? What unexpressed anger or grief or longing might lie frozen in my emotional body, ready to surface as lies or sarcastic remarks or words meant to mask what I really want to say? How do my words affect people?

Asking these questions may make you aware of some of the buried emotional issues that lie behind your speech patterns, especially when you hear yourself whining or speaking harshly or filling up the air with chatter. Owning and healing those issues is going to be essential, because trying to speak from an authentic state of higher awareness without having done that healing is like building your house on a swamp. The underground water will eventually flood your basement, and your disowned pain will inevitably leak out through your words.

Ideally, you’ll be doing the emotional healing work you need, whether it is through some sort of therapy or energy healing, while simultaneously working with the powerful yogic practices that can help shift your speech patterns.

One such yogic practice is mantra repetition, the turning over of a sacred sound, like Om , in your mind. Mantric sounds in Sanskrit, Hebrew, or Arabic—the three most vibrationally powerful ancient languages—can recalibrate the energy in your physical and subtle bodies and create an inner atmosphere that gives your words new clarity and power.

As our energy becomes more refined, we become more sensitive to the resonance of our own words. We can choose our words more carefully, without feeling that we are constantly quashing our spontaneity or expressiveness.

3 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Speaking

As a person with a tendency toward impulsive speech, I’ve often found it helpful to use an inner protocol that helps me determine whether the remark I’m about to make would be better left unsaid. A teacher of mine once remarked that before you speak, it’s a good idea to ask yourself three questions:

Is this true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?

She called these questions the three gates of speech; versions of them can be found in many contemporary Buddhist and Hindu teachings. Remembering to ask them will at least give you pause, and that pause can be enough to hold back torrents of trouble.

1. Is It True?

One thing I like about these questions is that they open up a big space for contemplation. For example, does “true” mean only what is literally true? You know you’re lying (hopefully!) when you willfully distort or deny facts. But what about slight exaggerations? If you leave out part of the story, is it still true? And where does opinion fit in? What is the “truth” about your friend’s boyfriend, whom she sees as smart and interesting and you see as pretentious and arrogant? In sorting out truth from partial truth, lies or distortions, how do you account for personal perspective, which can alter our view of objective events to the point where two people can see one scene in radically different ways?

Over time, you’ll want to sort all this out for yourself. But in the short term, asking yourself “Is this true?” is a good way to become aware of certain dicey verbal tendencies—the slight exaggerations, unsupported assertions, and self-justifications that burble out of your mouth. Personally, I give myself a pass on storytelling. But when I catch myself saying in a tone of authority, “ Patanjali never would have said that!” I’ve learned to ask myself, “Do I know that for sure?” Often, I’m forced to admit that I don’t.

2. Is It Kind?

It may seem obvious that some remarks are kind and some are not. But what happens when kindness seems at odds with the truth? Are there certain truths that should not be spoken—even kindly—because they are simply too crushing? Or is it a form of cowardice to suppress a truth that you know will cause pain? What if your words could destroy a friendship, unmake a marriage, or ruin a life—do you speak them?

3. Is It Necessary?

“I’ve had words literally stick in my throat,” a friend once told me, explaining why he had come to the conclusion that, when he’s confronted with the conflict between kindness and truth, the best choice is simply to remain silent. But sometimes we must speak out even when we dread the consequences. It’s obviously necessary—if we want to prevent wrongdoing—for an employee to let the boss know that the accountant is fudging the books, even if the accountant is a close friend. It’s necessary at some point for a doctor to tell a terminally ill patient that she’s likely to die soon. It’s necessary to let your lover know that you’re unhappy with him before your unhappiness gets to the point where you’re ready to pack your bags. But is it necessary to tell your friend that you saw his girlfriend with another guy? Or to join in the daily office discussions of the latest management screw-ups?

A few years ago, a young woman I’ll call Greta spoke to me after a workshop. In her early teens, her father had sexually abused her. She’d been working with a therapist, and she’d decided that as part of her healing she needed to confront her father and also tell her sisters about it. She knew that this would shatter her very traditional family, humiliate her father, and perhaps not give her the satisfaction she wanted. She worried deeply about whether she was doing the right thing.

I suggested that Greta ask herself the three questions. To the first question “Is this true?” she had an unequivocal yes. She disposed of the “Is it kind?” question quickly and fiercely, believing that what she was about to do was a form of tough love. It was the third question, “Is this necessary?” that brought up her doubts.

Greta decided that speaking up was necessary, particularly because her sisters were still living at home. The effect on her family has been just as difficult and painful as she had feared; nonetheless, she believes she made the right decision. In this kind of process, we make decisions based on the best criteria we have. The consequences, intended or not, are not always in our hands.

I like to use these questions not as mechanisms for censorship but as reminders, as invitations to speak from the highest level of consciousness I’m capable of at any given moment. We all carry inside us multiple impulses, and we are all capable of operating from many layers of ourselves—from shadowy parts as well as from noble intentions and feelings.

But the magic of words is that they can, in and of themselves, transform our consciousness. Words and thoughts that vibrate at a higher level of resonance can change our inner state as well, and they certainly have an effect on the environment around us.

Speech Recognition

Kathy, who is just beginning to practice the yoga of speech, teaches at a community college that just went through budget cuts. Many teachers lost their jobs and the rest were scared and angry. So they started talking, sometimes for hours, about how the spirit of the department had been lost. The depth of their feelings powered their words, and often Kathy couldn’t sleep after one of these conversations.

One day, she said, she realized all this commiseration was creating a miasma of bad feeling that actually hurt her heart. So she asked herself, “What should I do to raise the vibration here?” Her solution was straight out of the yogic tradition: cleansing her mind with mantra. Mantra, sometimes defined as a word that liberates the one who repeats it, is considered the purest form of speech, and certain mantras can provide an instant connection to higher levels of reality. The mantra Kathy uses, Om Namah Shivaya (“Salutations to the highest consciousness”) is considered especially powerful for purifying the mind and speech. Kathy told me that after turning it over in her mind for 20 minutes she would find that her stream of consciousness had sweetened.

As her mind felt clearer, her emotions cooled and she could resist unloading her frustration at every opportunity. She suggested to her colleagues that they reframe the way they talked about work. As Kathy told me, complaining is a hard habit to break. “Negativity is one of the ways we bond,” she mused. “My friends are the people I can complain to, or be critical with, as opposed to being in public, where I have to be nice.” Yet, as Kathy found, we generate a lot of power when we speak from the highest level of awareness. “I decided that whenever I started to complain, I’d get quiet, and take my attention to my heart. Then I’d wait to see what words arose from that silent place. Nearly always, it was something unexpected—even something wise.”

Kathy discovered an important clue about where empowered speech comes from. Not from a quick tongue or a chatty mind. Speech that can change and inspire us, speech that resonates from our highest Self, comes out of our contact with the silent place behind words, the place we reach when we’re able to pause, turn into the heart, and let the stillness speak through our words. Speech that comes out of stillness is speech that comes, quite literally, from the source of wisdom itself.

As you know, today is International Yoga Day and it’s a very important day for the whole world. In this stressful life, the importance of yoga is increasing day by day and so far its importance has increased so much that every person wants to do it.

Although people have known about yoga since ancient times, but it has emerged rapidly in a few decades. Due to its rapid emergence, It gained international recognition in 2015.

Actually, there are many benefits of doing yoga. It not only gives peace to the body, mind, and soul but it also provides flexibility to our body as compared to others. Yoga is the only way that can make people’s day effective. It can relieve mental stress and instill a lot of self-confidence in a person.

Seeing the growing effect of yoga, today billions of people are taking advantage of it by incorporating it into their lives.

In the end, I’d suggest all of you do yoga daily so that you can avoid the diseases.

Good morning to all, my name is Aparna Shukla and I study in class 10th.

Today, on the occasion of Yoga Day, I’m going to give a speech on the importance of yoga so that you can also include it in your life. By chance, if there is any mistake, please forgive me.

Truly, the whole world needs yoga.

People are so busy and stricken in the hustle and bustle of life that yoga is the only way that can take care of their mental, social, spiritual, and physical health.

Yoga not only helps people to concentrate but is also responsible for keeping them healthy. In other words, by practicing yoga continuously, your mind becomes calm and connected with the inner soul.

Additionally, there are many benefits of doing yoga. It increases the power of concentration, makes people active, brings peace to the body, establishes flexibility and improves blood circulation in the body, etc.

We are so busy in our life that we’re unable to pay attention to our health due to which various types of diseases are arising.

In earlier times, people used to do so much hard work that they didn’t need to do yoga. But, today time has changed.

In today’s time, no one wants to do hard work or physical labor due to which people are getting a lot of stress and laziness.

Those who know the importance of yoga are doing it continuously and influencing others as well, but those who don’t know can never understand its value.

Actually, yoga is the only way by which we can stay fresh throughout the day.

By practicing yoga, we can keep ourselves fit on all sides and easily remove inner anxiety and stress.

Also, it’s very helpful to sharpen and stabilize the intelligence of the people as yoga is such a process that keeps the energy alive inside people as well as helps to concentrate on doing any kind of work.

It has many other benefits like making blood flow smoothly in the body, making muscles flexible, getting rid of problems like obesity, driving away from the laziness of the body, protecting the body from diseases, providing internal strength, etc.

Overall, yoga is very important in people’s lives, people have to understand it.

Today, yoga has gained popularity globally since it was recognized in 2015 through the tireless efforts of Narendra Modi.

Along with our country, other countries are also giving importance to it. They are following all its asanas for more benefits.

Therefore, I’ll recommend you to do yoga daily so that you can be free from diseases and stress too.

Hello everyone, My name is Vijay Gupta and I belong to a very small town that is situated in district Hardoi, which is in Uttar Pradesh. 1. But during the preparation, I was being graduated from CSJMU Kanpur. I completed my graduation in 2016 and now I’m pursuing an educational degree ( B.Ed. ). 2. Profession – Although I love teaching, but I also do blogging. Both are my favorite jobs.

Good Morning All!

As you know that today our Yoga Group Foundation has successfully completed one year, so today’s event has been organized to celebrate this one-year achievement. On this auspicious day, please allow me to heartily congratulate and express words of gratitude to our members of Yoga Group Foundation who worked hard to spread awareness among the masses about the benefit of yoga and helped made available necessary resources to make this one-year session a harbinger of bodily health and mental happiness. Also, I want to thank all the society people who never missed a day and showed enthusiasm to learn this art form and spread the teaching amongst others.

I, Nandini, your host for today’s event and one of the co-founders of this group wish to deliver a short speech on Yoga – the science behind it and forms its essence.

Many of us perform Yoga on a daily basis, but how many actually know about what this art form entails and why it is performed. So it’s basically a method to achieve balance in our bodies, i.e. gaining strength, increasing flexibility and attaining spirituality. Yoga also endorses a non-materialistic way of living. Yoga is more precisely described through the use of the Sanskrit word called “asana” which means the practicing of different types of physical postures or asanas. The yoga postures are an indispensable part of the yoga. Usually, the class begins with normal breathing exercises and then goes on to incorporate gentle asanas followed by more tough ones. The yoga asanas are performed keeping in mind all the body parts as well as combine breathing practices, including guided mediation.

There are different poses for which the instructor guides you throughout; these poses include standing, sitting, back bending, forward bends, upside-down asanas as well as twisting postures. Besides these, there are other different types of yoga which are especially tailored to suit the different needs of people. For instance, there is Hatha Yoga, which is the most practiced form and deals with the breathing exercises and bodily postures. Then there are two other types of yoga, i.e. Karma and Bhakti Yoga, which are advised to people who are looking to gain spiritual experience in life.

This is an art form known to humanity from thousands of years whose history can be traced back to 3,000 BC. Since then, it is being practiced by various spiritual gurus and in the contemporary times, yoga is being looked up as a disciplinary form itself to be taught in various schools and colleges. The definitive aim of yoga is to help a person rise above the self and gain a sublime experience. Hon’ble Principal, Hon’ble Chief Guest, Fellow Teachers and My Lovely Students – Warm Greetings to all!

I, your senior yoga teacher, heartily welcome everyone to today’s weekly event, of which Yoga is a major highlight. To begin with, I would like to deliver a short speech on Yoga with a view to spread more awareness about this subject amongst you all.

Workout trends come and go, but literally no other form of exercise is as stable as yoga and it has been around for over a period of 5,000 years now. Yoga helps us way beyond than just burning the calories and toning down our muscles. It’s an all-inclusive workout that focuses on both mind and body. Under yoga training, one performs all kinds of stretching and strengthening poses, including deep breathing, relaxation or meditation.

Currently, over 100 diverse forms of yoga are known, which are rigorous and intense while others are mild and relaxing. There are six different forms of yoga that are well-known today:

  • Hatha – The form is mainly related with yoga and combines a sequence of basic movements, including breathing.
  • Vinyasa – It includes a sequence of poses which smoothly flow from one to the other.
  • Iyengar – It is a type of yoga which makes use of props, such as straps, blocks and chairs in order to help one move his/her body with the proper alignment.
  • Bikram – Also called as “hot yoga”, this form includes a sequence of 26 complex poses performed in a heated room that carries a high temperature.
  • Power – A more rapid, greater-intensity practice that shapes muscles.
  • Ashtanga – A sequence of poses that combines an exceptional breathing technique.

You just name it and you’ll get it! Beautiful, glowing skin; a well-built, flexible body; regulated weight; sound health and calm mind – the benefits of yoga include all this and so much more. However, more often than not yoga is being seen to be restricted to asanas, i.e. poses. This is the reason why its benefits are only identified at the bodily level and we overlook its enormous benefits that yoga offers in bringing together the body and mind. When both your body and mind are in sync with each other, then life becomes more fulfilling and happier than ever before.

So everyone must practice yoga and make it a part of daily routine in order to get a strong, flexible and supple body. Its regular practice helps improve your body posture while you walk, sit or sleep. This will in turn also help you relive your body pain owing to inappropriate postures.

Yoga when combined with meditation has the power to better your intuitive skills so that you can quickly ascertain what is required to be done, when it is to be done and how in order to gain positive results. This does work wonders and you can experience the change yourself only when you practice it without fail.

Remember yoga is a never ending process. The deeper you delve into it, the more fruitful will be the results. That’s all I can say.

Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen!

I hearty welcome all of you to our yoga auditorium and today is a very special day for our “ Stay Fit Organization ” because our organization has completed five years of success in motivating people for staying fit through yoga. As a manager of this organization, I am feeling highly privileged for hosting this event. As our organization is all about yoga and fitness, so in this context I would like to say a few words about yoga and it may help the newcomers to get motivated for staying fit.

First of all, it is very important to understand that what is yoga? It is the union between body and mind or we can say that it is a way to create a balance between mind and body. Yoga was said to be originated in India and therefore, it is known as “ Yog ” all around the world. Today, the knowledge and practice of yoga is getting disseminated all around the world and which is a very good thing. In yoga, we get to learn about many body postures or poses for keeping ourselves fit such as sitting, standing, forward bending, backward bending, upside-down postures etc. There are uncountable poses in yoga.

Many poses are required flexibility such as plow pose, pigeon pose, upward bow pose, fish pose etc; and many people does not have enough flexibility in their bodies, so there are many other poses which do not require high flexibility such as the perfect pose, mountain pose, chair pose, triangle pose etc . As there are uncountable poses, so there are uncountable benefits of practicing yoga also. Benefits defers from one pose to another. Practicing yoga is absolutely worthy and it has the potential to cure many diseases like respiratory problems, abdominal problems, diseases related to nervous system etc. It helps in reliving negativity and toxins from our body. It helps in reducing stress level and increasing awareness. Especially for children, it helps in building concentration power and focus. It can be said that it is a best medicine for curing respiratory problems and also works best for abdominal diseases like stomach ache and infections. It also helps in enhancing personality because automatically, if a person is disease free then he or she will look good and healthy.

After getting aware about all these benefits, I hope that many among you people are willing to pursue yoga for living a healthy life because we all know that health is wealth .

As this is a special day for our organization so, today our organization is giving a free trial session of three days to all the people who are interested in yoga. I am assuring you that it is going to change your life because I have experienced it by myself. Yoga is the best path for staying healthy and maintaining body balance.

On this note, I would like to end my speech and extend special thanks to our management community for organizing such an inspiring event and of course to the people for joining us and making this event successful.

Good Morning Respected Principal, Respected Teachers and My Dear Friends!

As we all know that today is June 21, 2017 and this date is declared as “ International Yoga Day ” by “ United Nations General Assembly ”. This date was proposed by our honorable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. It is said that on this day, the first yogi (Adi Guru) begun imparting the knowledge of yoga to the rest of mankind and became the first yoga guru.

As a head girl of this school, I would like to grab this opportunity to say a few words on highlighting the importance and benefits of yoga. I hope it may help you in understanding about yoga as an essential part of our daily life.

Many people wonder that what is yoga and how it can help in maintaining physical and mental stability? Yoga is a process for the union of body and mind or we can say that it is a process of maintaining stability between body and mind. In ancient period, yoga was a way of attaining enlightenment. In today’s world of high technology and hectic life, yoga is playing an important role in maintaining fitness and mental stability in our body and mind. It consists of various poses and postures of the body and in Sanskrit language we call it “ asanas ”. Some poses or asanas are complicated and therefore they need proper implications but some of them are very simple and can be practiced on our own. Many people choose to join yoga classes but some people who are not comfortable at classes, so they could buy yoga DVDs that are available in markets.

The formation of different kinds of yoga has been done to reach the solutions of different problems of people. Many people practice yoga on daily basis and hence they know the effects and positive changes that occurs in their body and life due to yoga. There could be no instant effect but if it is practiced on daily basis then the results could be seem. Yoga should become an integral part of our life just like sleeping and eating.

The benefits of yoga are infinite and it has the potential to cure many diseases. Many people are practicing yoga in today’s world to remain healthy. For aged people who cannot do intensive exercises, yoga proves to be a best choice for them. In yoga, we practice postures on the basis of its difficulty. We should start with a simple pose and then pursue for a difficult one.

Many people and even small kids have respiratory problems these days due to air pollution and lack of fresh air. In yoga, there are many poses and exercises that have the potential to cure respiratory problems. But not only respiratory but also it helps in curing many other diseases related to our nervous system, abdominal problems, joint problems etc. For instance, “ bending poses” are done for strengthening joints and muscles, “balancing poses” are done for strengthening arms and legs, “seated yoga poses ” are done for flexibility and reliving mental stress, “supine yoga poses” are done for flexibility and there are many other different kinds of poses.

On this note, I would like to conclude my speech and I request our honorable yoga guru for starting the Yoga Day . Now you may collect your yoga mats.

For The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast, I am always looking for people to interview. I am also always listening to the struggles that yoga teachers share with me in conversations so that I have more ideas for podcast and live show episodes.

The Yoga Conference offers the perfect place for this.

I was ready, business cards in hand and a full trade show floor of yoga teachers and professionals who work with yoga teachers stretching out in front of me. I dedicated an entire morning to this project and I was still nervous with all of this motivation behind me.

Before You Introduce Yourself

So often people ask us, “What do you do?” and we have a choice right then. We can reply, “I am a yoga teacher.” and leave it at that or we can share our core message in that moment.

Define Your Core Message

Ask yourself a few questions to get into this mindset.

  • What is the purpose of the work that you are doing?
  • What is your yoga offering to the world?
  • Why are you really passionate about this work?
  • What has shaped how you share yoga?
  • Have you been curious about this work for your entire life? If so how?
  • If you had a room of people listening to you for 30 minutes (and you had no fear of public speaking), what would you want to talk to them about so that you could have an impact on how they were living?
  • What do you believe in or stand for?

A great tool for this is in the book “Made to Stick” by Chip and Dan Heath . They call it the three whys and it is designed to get at the emotional core to an idea. In the video I share more on this concept, but here is a quick outline.

  • Write down your yoga offering or idea.
  • Write down why you think this is important in the world.
  • Write down why you think #2 is important.
  • Write down why you think #3 is important.

Create Your Elevator Speech

Let me clarify before we dive into this. I don’t use my elevator speech when I meet people in person. It doesn’t fit into natural conversation in my world. I also don’t have just one elevator speech or way of introducing myself. I let this flow with the setting and the conversation.

Carol Cox of Speaking Your Brand shared an excellent template for creating an elevator speech. It is shown in the image below. This uses all of the principles that we talked about in getting to the core message of your yoga. Who do you work with, what do you help them with and how?

Consider Your Story and Their Story

In the core message we talked about what led you to the yoga that you share. People connect with story. The same is true when we ask questions that draw out someone else’s story. So ask people questions when you meet them. Get really curious.

This is how you get to know your yoga students, (or people in general), what their struggles are and how you can help them. I also don’t mean how we can help as in “fixing” people emotionally and physically with yoga. Sometimes we can help people by telling them about a great physiotherapist or article that is related to what they are asking about. And sometimes the work that we do is what that person is looking for.

In the video I talked about how Felicia Slattery, author of “Kill the Elevator Speech” , talks about being the travelling buddy bench.

Getting Clear on Your Introduction and Core Message is a Marketing Tool

When you want to share your story, your core message and what your yoga sharing is about — this is how you create your social media sites, website, posters and any communication with your students.

If you are faced with a decision on what to say in a poster — you just need to come back to your core message and the what you offer and to whom to choose your words.

Flow and Be Yourself

When you introduce yourself to new people be authentic and talk in a way that feels natural to you. And go with the flow. I talked to a yoga teacher last week who told me that she introduces herself in different ways, depending on who she is talking with. This is especially helpful if you are working as a yoga teacher and you have another career or if you have different areas of focus within teaching.

Continue with this authentic communication within your marketing materials as well.

Good Morning to all presented dignitaries. As we know that our college is celebrating yoga day as last year. I would like to give a short speech on Yoga and the science and essence behind it.

Every year on 21 st June, the entire world having functions of yoga and celebrates International Yoga Day. When do we celebrate International Yoga Day 2020: Date, as we have told you that from the year 2015, it is celebrated every year on 21 June?

If you also have a question in your mind that why Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21, how Yoga Day was started, then according to Indian culture, after the summer solstice The Sun becomes Dakshinayan.

We know that 21 June is known to be the biggest day of the year. On the day of 21 June, the sun rises early and falls very late. This is the reason why International Yoga Day is celebrated on 21 June.

There is a theme is fixed for each year of Yoga Day. Yoga Day is celebrated with a theme every. But this year because of the worldwide epidemic i.e. COVID 19, people have been given theme related to this, which will promote health and health.

International Yoga Day 2020 has a theme like last year. The Theme was “to practice yoga within the family when they’re together”.

Since it’s starting, these themes have been presented yearly. I want to tell about all by its names.

  • The International Yoga Day Theme of 2015 was: Yoga for World Harmony and Peace

  • The International Yoga Day Theme of 2018 was: Yoga for Peace
  • The International Yoga Day Theme of 2019 was: Yoga for Heart
  • International Yoga Day of 2020 was: Yoga at home, Yoga with family (Yoga at Home and Yoga with Family) It was during COVID19.

Now, in short, I want to explain about yoga. It is the connection between body and mind or we can also say that it is a way of balancing between mind and body. Yoga originated in India and is therefore known worldwide as “Yoga”.

Today, the knowledge and practice of Yoga are spreading worldwide, which is a wonderful thing. In yoga, we get to learn about many-body rugs such as the actions of keeping ourselves fit as examples like sitting, standing, leaning forward, leaning backwards, standing upside down.

As now, the entire world knows the advantages of yoga. Practicing Yoga is very beneficial and its practice can cure many diseases like respiratory problems, stomach problems, diseases related to the digestive system. It helps to remove negativity and mental diseases from our body. It helps reduce stress levels and raise awareness.

This concentration, especially for children, helps in building strength and focus. It can be said that it is the best medicine to treat respiratory problems and is also helpful for diseases like abdominal pain and infection. It also helps in improving the image of a person because automatically if a person is disease free then he will look good and healthy.

I want to explain the benefits of yoga in short.

• The yoga has the power which is not in any other exercise in the world.

• The most important thing about yoga is that you do not need any kind of yantra for yoga. Yoga is a unique physical activity that one can get rid of all diseases with no medicine.

• For yoga, you spare time of just 20-30 minutes daily in the morning or evening and stay away from the tiredness of the day.

• Yoga is a very good and beneficial exercise for children, which gives activeness and keeps children healthy and at the same time makes their mind calm and strong.

• Regular yoga reduces body weight.

• It removes the anxiety of the mind due to which mental stress and diseases like hypertension remain away from the body.

• By doing yoga, positive thoughts are generated in the mind and at the same time, the mind is engaged in work.

Dear all dignitaries Now I want to end my words and finally want to say that it would not be an exaggeration to say that yoga is necessary for us in every way. It is very good for our body & physical, spiritual and mental health.

Satisfaction in mind, peace, and energetic feelings are realized through only yoga, which makes our valuable life stress-free and moves forward with positive energy every day.  Because of this, 177 countries passed a resolution for the International Yoga Day to be celebrated on 21 June by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

'It's on everybody's mind': Morehouse faculty and students raise concerns about Biden's graduation speech

ATLANTA — Morehouse College’s leadership is set to hold a call on Thursday — where faculty will get the chance to speak — to address concerns over having President Joe Biden as the school’s commencement speaker next month.

“From our perspective, really having a sitting president come to Morehouse offers an incredible opportunity,” said Morehouse Provost Kendrick Brown, who, along with the president of the school, will be conducting the call this evening, adding: “This is something that is in line with Morehouse’s mission and also with this objective of being a place that allows for engagement of social justice issues and moral concerns.”

Commencement season is traditionally a time for presidents to engage with younger audiences and all the energy they bring. But this year, with pro-Palestinian protests — and protests against Biden’s support for Israel —  dominating college campuses , these speeches are more fraught. The White House announced this week that Biden will be doing just two commencement addresses this year, at Morehouse and at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Morehouse professor Andrew Douglas said many students and faculty are “wrestling” with whether — or how — to protest next month’s commencement.

“I’ve spoken with several faculty members who say under no conditions are they going to sit on a stage with Joe Biden,” Douglas said, adding: “It’s on everybody’s mind.”

Douglas, a political science professor in his 13th year at Morehouse, is a member of the school’s faculty council, the 15-member body that wrote a letter to the school’s president last week expressing “disappointment” upon hearing rumors that Biden had been invited to speak.

After those concerns came out, Morehouse’s leadership decided to hold its call with faculty members, though officials have made clear Biden’s invitation will not be rescinded.

“This was a decision that should have included more members of the campus community — students and faculty,” Douglas said. “And if those conversations had happened, I’m not sure that the decision to move forward would have been made.”

He pointed to “very serious and widespread concerns” over the war in Gaza, arguing that “the Biden administration has had a hand in seven months of death and destruction in ways that we don’t condone or support.”

On Wednesday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre responded to the backlash, telling reporters that commencements were meant to focus on the graduates and their families.

“It’s not the first time, obviously, that he’s given commencement speeches," she said. "I understand this is a different moment in time that we’re in. But he always takes this moment as a special time to deliver a message, an encouraging message, a message that’s hopefully uplifting to the graduates and their families. And we’re going to continue to have these conversations that I’ve just mentioned, with the different communities about what’s happening right now. We get it. It’s painful."

Calvin Bell, a senior at Morehouse who voted for Biden in 2020, has similar concerns. While he described Biden’s speech as a “distraction” from celebrating students during commencement, he also sees the visit as a chance to take student concerns over Gaza directly to the president.

“This is also an opportunity for students to make their voices heard during a time of increasing war and genocide in the Middle East,” Bell said. 

While Douglas acknowledged the call with leadership is “unlikely” to result in Biden’s speech being canceled, Douglas says the priority among faculty is to protect students’ rights to protest, noting that a protest at Morehouse — the nation’s only college dedicated to educating Black men — could bring a different risk than similar protests at other campuses across the country.

 “Our priority should be … to try and ensure that under no circumstances are the police brought to bear on our students,” Douglas said. 

“Our students do not have the same privileges that Ivy League students typically do, and confrontations with the police can turn deadly for our students,” he added.

“We have a legacy of being at the forefront of justice movements,” Brown said. “We certainly encourage our students, our faculty, our staff, to form strong opinions and to come together peacefully and engage in that. So the way I see this is, this is certainly an opportunity … for our community to engage with the president to express the range of views that exist on the present issues, certainly in Israel and Gaza.”

Politically, the speech holds several layers of significance for Biden. Morehouse is located just west of downtown Atlanta in battleground Georgia — a state Biden barely won in 2020. Some state Democrats have expressed concern about his ability to repeat that victory.

A speech at the lauded alma mater of Martin Luther King Jr. would also give the president a unique opportunity to appeal to young Black voters — a group where polls show his support is lagging.

But while commencement is still a month away — enough time for minds to change — Douglas said the early signs do not point to a warm welcome: “I have not had a conversation with a student who’s happy about this.”

WASHINGTON (AP) —

The war in Gaza spurred large protests outside a glitzy roast with President Joe Biden, journalists, politicians and celebrities Saturday but went all but unmentioned by participants inside, with Biden instead using the annual White House correspondents’ dinner to make both jokes and grim warnings about Republican rival Donald Trump’s fight to reclaim the U.S. presidency.

An evening normally devoted to presidents, journalists and comedians taking outrageous pokes at political scandals and each other often seemed this year to illustrate the difficulty of putting aside the coming presidential election and the troubles in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Biden opened his roast with a direct but joking focus on Trump, calling him “sleepy Don,” in reference to a nickname Trump had given the president previously.

Despite being similar in age, Biden said, the two presidential hopefuls have little else in common. “My vice president actually endorses me,” Biden said. Former Trump Vice President Mike Pence has refused to endorse Trump’s reelection bid.

But the president quickly segued to a grim speech about what he believes is at stake this election, saying that another Trump administration would be even more harmful to America than his first term.

“We have to take this serious — eight years ago we could have written it off as ‘Trump talk’ but not after January 6,” Biden told the audience, referring to the supporters of Trump who stormed the Capitol after Biden defeated Trump in the 2020 election.

Trump did not attend Saturday’s dinner and never attended the annual banquet as president. In 2011, he sat in the audience, and glowered through a roasting by then-President Barack Obama of Trump’s reality-television celebrity status. Obama’s sarcasm then was so scalding that many political watchers linked it to Trump’s subsequent decision to run for president in 2016.

Biden’s speech, which lasted around 10 minutes, made no mention of the ongoing war or the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

One of the few mentions came from Kelly O’Donnell, president of the correspondents’ association, who briefly noted some 100 journalists killed in Israel’s 6-month-old war against Hamas in Gaza. In an evening dedicated in large part to journalism, O’Donnell cited journalists who have been detained across the world, including Americans Evan Gershkovich in Russia and Austin Tice, who is believed to be held in Syria. Families of both men were in attendance as they have been at previous dinners.

To get inside Saturday’s dinner, some guests had to hurry through hundreds of protesters outraged over the mounting humanitarian disaster for Palestinian civilians in Gaza. They condemned Biden for his support of Israel’s military campaign and Western news outlets for what they said was undercoverage and misrepresentation of the conflict.

“Shame on you!” protesters draped in the traditional Palestinian keffiyeh cloth shouted, running after men in tuxedos and suits and women in long dresses holding clutch purses as guests hurried inside for the dinner.

“Western media we see you, and all the horrors that you hide,” crowds chanted at one point.

Other protesters lay sprawled motionless on the pavement, next to mock-ups of flak vests with “press” insignia.

Ralliers cried “Free, free Palestine.” They cheered when at one point someone inside the Washington Hilton — where the dinner has been held for decades — unfurled a Palestinian flag from a top-floor hotel window.

Criticism of the Biden administration’s support for Israel’s military offensive in Gaza has spread through American college campuses , with students pitching encampments and withstanding police sweeps in an effort to force their universities to divest from Israel. Counterprotests back Israel’s offensive and complain of antisemitism.

Biden’s motorcade Saturday took an alternate route from the White House to the Washington Hilton than in previous years, largely avoiding the crowds of demonstrators.

Saturday’s event drew nearly 3,000 people. Celebrities included Academy Award winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Scarlett Johansson, Jon Hamm and Chris Pine.

Both the president and comedian Colin Jost, who spoke after Biden, made jabs at the age of both the candidates for president. “I’m not saying both candidates are old. But you know Jimmy Carter is out there thinking, ‘maybe I can win this thing,’” Jost said. “He’s only 99.”

Law enforcement, including the Secret Service, instituted extra street closures and other measures to ensure what Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said would be the “highest levels of safety and security for attendees.”

Protest organizers said they aimed to bring attention to the high numbers of Palestinian and other Arab journalists killed by Israel’s military since the war began in October.

More than two dozen journalists in Gaza wrote a letter last week calling on their colleagues in Washington to boycott the dinner altogether.

“The toll exacted on us for merely fulfilling our journalistic duties is staggering,” the letter stated. “We are subjected to detentions, interrogations, and torture by the Israeli military, all for the ‘crime’ of journalistic integrity.”

One organizer complained that the White House Correspondents’ Association — which represents the hundreds of journalists who cover the president — largely has been silent since the first weeks of the war about the killings of Palestinian journalists. WHCA did not respond to a request for comment.

According to a preliminary investigation released Friday by the Committee to Protect Journalists, nearly 100 journalists have been killed covering the war in Gaza. Israel has defended its actions, saying it has been targeting militants.

“Since the Israel-Gaza war began, journalists have been paying the highest price — their lives — to defend our right to the truth. Each time a journalist dies or is injured, we lose a fragment of that truth,” CPJ Program Director Carlos Martínez de la Serna said in a statement.

Sandra Tamari, executive director of Adalah Justice Project, a U.S.-based Palestinian advocacy group that helped organize the letter from journalists in Gaza, said “it is shameful for the media to dine and laugh with President Biden while he enables the Israeli devastation and starvation of Palestinians in Gaza.”

In addition, Adalah Justice Project started an email campaign targeting 12 media executives at various news outlets — including The Associated Press — expected to attend the dinner who previously signed onto a letter calling for the protection of journalists in Gaza.

“How can you still go when your colleagues in Gaza asked you not to?” a demonstrator asked guests heading in. “You are complicit.”

Modi Calls Muslims ‘Infiltrators’ Who Would Take India’s Wealth

The direct language used against the country’s largest minority was a contrast to the image Prime Minister Narendra Modi presents on the world stage.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called Muslims “infiltrators” who would take India’s wealth if his opponents gained power — unusually direct and divisive language from a leader who normally lets others do the dirtiest work of polarizing Hindus against Muslims.

Mr. Modi, addressing voters in the state of Rajasthan, referred to a remark once made by Manmohan Singh, his predecessor from the opposition Indian National Congress Party. Mr. Singh, Mr. Modi claimed, had “said that Muslims have the first right to the wealth of the nation. This means they will distribute this wealth to those who have more children, to infiltrators.”

Mr. Modi aimed his emotional appeal at women, addressing “my mothers and sisters” to say that his Congress opponents would take their gold and give it to Muslims.

But, you know, the fact is that people realize that when he says the Congress Party is going to take all your wealth and give it to the Muslims, that this is just a nakedly communal appeal which normally any civilized election commission would disallow and warn the candidate for speaking like this.

Implications like these — that Muslims have too many babies, that they are coming for Hindus’ wives and daughters, that their nationality as Indian is itself in doubt — are often made by representatives of Mr. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, or B.J.P.

Mr. Modi’s use of such language himself, as he campaigns for a third term in office, raised alarm that it could inflame right-wing vigilantes who target Muslims , and brought up questions about what had prompted his shift in communication style. Usually, Mr. Modi avoids even using the word “Muslims,” coyly finding ways to refer indirectly to India’s largest minority group, of 200 million people.

Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress party, called Mr. Modi’s remarks “hate speech.” Asaduddin Owaisi, who represents the only national party for Muslims, lamented how “common Hindus are made to fear Muslims while their wealth is being used to enrich others.”

Tom Vadakkan, a spokesman for the B.J.P., said that Mr. Modi’s speech was being misinterpreted. “This is not about our compatriots, the Muslims,” he said. Mr. Modi was talking only about “infiltrators,” according to Mr. Vadakkan.

The prime minister’s fiery oration, delivered in 100-degree heat in the town of Banswara in arid Rajasthan, marked a contrast to the image he presents in international contexts.

During a visit to the White House in June, Mr. Modi said there was “no question of discrimination” in India. When he played host to the Group of 20 summit in New Delhi three months later, he chose the theme “the world is one family”(in Sanskrit, the primary liturgical language of orthodox Hinduism).

He put his own face on soft-power outreach programs like World Yoga Day, broadcast to Times Square, using it to present a Hindu-centric India as a benign “teacher to the world.”

Campaigns that divide Hindus and Muslims can be useful in animating the hard-right Hindu base of Mr. Modi’s otherwise broad-based electorate, especially in places like Banswara, where Hindus outnumber Muslims by three to one.

With his remarks, Mr. Modi may have been trying to close a divide that has opened among Hindus in Rajasthan over whether to support the B.J.P., with one prominent group holding protests over comments made by a party official.

But the prime minister’s speech was also clearly intended for a wider audience; he shared a clip on his official social media channels.

The B.J.P. remains the favorite to win another parliamentary majority when six weeks of voting concludes on June 1 and ballots are counted three days later. Mr. Kharge, the Congress party president, called Mr. Modi’s speech — perhaps hopefully — a sign of desperation, adding that opposition candidates must be faring well in the early stages of balloting.

Neerja Chowdhury, a columnist and the author of “How Prime Ministers Decide,” echoed Mr. Kharge, saying that, in her view, “voters are expressing their dissatisfaction much more openly this time.” The B.J.P. is capable of a swift course correction, she added, because “they get feedback very quickly.”

Rahul Gandhi, the public face of the Congress party , said that Mr. Modi’s comments had been intended as a diversion from subjects that trouble ordinary voters, like joblessness and inflation.

That the prime minister alluded to religion at all in his speech drew complaints that he may have violated India’s election rules.

Candidates are supposed to be barred from asking for votes in the name of religion or caste. But B.J.P. leaders regularly invoke Hindu deities during campaign rallies. The country’s Election Commission, which enforces the rules, has taken little action against the party, even as it has moved against members of other parties in similar cases.

Uddhav Thackeray, a former ally of Mr. Modi’s who is now running against the B.J.P., declared that he would now ignore an Election Commission order to remove the word “Hindu” from his own party’s campaign song.

The basis for Mr. Modi’s attack was a 22-second excerpt from a statement that Mr. Singh, a Sikh economist who was the prime minister before Mr. Modi, made in 2006. Mr. Singh had been listing many of the traditionally disadvantaged groups in India, including lower-caste Hindus and tribal populations, and “in particular the Muslim community,” and said that all should share equitably in the nation’s wealth.

Since Mr. Modi took office in 2014, Muslims haven’t had a proportional share of India’s steady economic and social development . Just one of the 430 candidates the B.J.P. is fielding in the current election is Muslim.

Mr. Singh’s speech from 2006 seems old now, but it was made just four years after riots in the state of Gujarat under the watch of Mr. Modi. Hindus and Muslims hacked and burned one another and at least 1,000 died, most of them Muslims.

An earlier version of this article misstated the number of Muslim candidates that the B.J.P. is fielding in India’s current election. It is one, not zero.

Opinion: USC got it wrong in canceling valedictorian’s speech. Here’s what the school should do now

USC’s decision to rescind valedictorian Asna Tabassum’s invitation to speak at its commencement no doubt resulted from a range of pressures from inside and outside the university, particularly the outcry over the student’s expressions of support for Palestinians. Provost Andrew T. Guzman wrote that he acted in the face of “substantial risks relating to security and disruption at commencement.”

Particularly since Oct. 7, university administrators have tough jobs requiring them to balance commitments to free speech, a vibrant and respectful academic culture, and campus safety. That said, USC made the wrong decision.

University officials evidently calculated that they would prefer taking heat for canceling Tabassum’s speech to doing what they have done for over a century: giving the valedictorian the opportunity to share her insights with the USC community.

What exactly was the risk of abiding by this valuable and time-honored tradition? After all, U.S. presidents are invited to give commencement addresses at universities every year, necessitating far more security than any other speaker. Surely the threats posed to Tabassum can’t be graver than those facing a president of the United States.

Could it be that the risks motivating administrators included the prospect that the valedictorian might criticize Israel’s war in Gaza or express sympathy for the Palestinian people? If so, their tolerance for voices that roil the establishment has sadly disappeared.

We will not move past the crisis of the moment by silencing those with whom we disagree. The university is exactly the sort of place where such views must be heard. Otherwise, it is not a university.

Opinion: College campus hecklers, your disruptions don’t count as free speech

Recent incidents at SUNY Albany, Stanford Law School and Cornell show students confusing censorship for legitimate protest.

Universities should resist the toxic political culture that locks us in our echo chambers, where we are exposed only to those views that are to our liking. Students shouldn’t become passive followers who seek a diploma just to get a job. We want and need our students to be leaders; they need to encounter divergent and challenging perspectives that allow for innovation and the production of knowledge that can serve society.

An important point is often lost in the shrillness of public debate: It is legitimate to call for the liberation of Palestinians who have been deprived of the right of self-determination — which is precisely what Israel represents for Jews — since 1948, even if reasonable people can disagree about how that should be achieved. It is also legitimate to express grave concern about a war that has killed more than 33,000 people, many of them children, and displaced most of the Gaza Strip’s population.

These arguments are deeply discomfiting to many, especially students, staff and faculty who identify with Israel. And if the valedictorian were to articulate these claims in her commencement speech, it would be uncomfortable for some, perhaps many. But controversy is hardly unheard of or inappropriate in commencement addresses and decisions about who delivers them.

Graduation speakers have seized the pulpit to speak truth to power during some of the most tumultuous times in our country. At Vassar College’s 1970 commencement ceremony, it was probably uncomfortable for many in the audience, particularly the men, when Gloria Steinem declared that “much of the trouble this country is in has to do with the Masculine Mystique: the idea that manhood somehow depends on the subjugation of other people.” And many in the audience of UC Berkeley’s 1966 law school commencement were likely uncomfortable when valedictorian Michael Tigar devoted his speech to Vietnam, proclaiming: “War is the enemy of political freedom.”

But given the tedium that so often characterizes commencement speeches, controversial ones may be more in line with the rightful function of universities.

It is not too late for USC to correct its error. It would do justice to Tabassum, who is by all accounts an exceptional, passionate and compassionate student. And it would demonstrate confidence in the university as a forum that can withstand — and even benefit from — controversial and challenging speech.

The remarks were made at a campaign rally on Sunday and have drawn fierce criticism that Modi was peddling anti-Muslim tropes.

The Congress party filed a complaint on Monday with the Election Commission of India, alleging he broke rules that bar candidates from engaging in any activity that aggravates religious tensions.

Critics of the prime minister who is an avowed Hindu nationalist, said India's tradition of diversity and secularism has come under attack since his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won power a decade ago.

They accused the party of fostering religious intolerance and sometimes even violence.

The party denied the accusation and said its policies benefit all Indians.

At a rally in the state of Rajasthan, Modi said that when the Congress party was in government, "they said Muslims have the first right over the country's resources."

If it returns to power, the party "will gather all your wealth and distribute it among those who have more children," he said as the crowd applauded.

"They will distribute it among infiltrators," he continued, saying, "Do you think your hard-earned money should be given to infiltrators?"

Congress Party President Mallikarjun Kharge, described the prime minister's comments as "hate speech" and party spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi called them "deeply, deeply objectionable".

The party sought action from the election commission, whose code of conduct forbids candidates from appealing "to caste or communal feelings" to secure votes.

The first votes were cast on Friday in the six-week election, which Modi and his Hindu nationalist BJP are expected to win, according to most surveys.

The results come out on June 4.

Asaduddin Owaidi, a Muslim lawmaker and president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen party, said on Sunday: "Since 2002 till this day, the only Modi guarantee has been to abuse Muslims and get votes".

While there have long been tensions between India's majority Hindu community and Muslims, human rights groups say that attacks against minorities have become more brazen under Modi.

Muslims have been lynched by Hindu mobs over allegations of eating beef or smuggling cows, an animal considered holy to Hindus.

Muslim businesses have been boycotted, their homes and businesses have been bulldozed and places of worship set on fire. There have been open calls for their genocide.

Modi's remarks referred to a 2006 statement by then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of the Congress party.

Singh said that India's lower castes, tribes, women and, "in particular the Muslim minority" deserved to share in the country's development equally.

"They must have the first claim on resources," Singh said. A day later, his office clarified that Singh was referring to all of the disadvantaged groups.

In its petition to the election commission, the Congress party said that Modi and the BJP have repeatedly used religion and religious symbols and sentiments in their election campaign with impunity.

"These actions have been further bolstered by the commission's inaction in penalising the prime minister and the BJP for their blatant violations of electoral laws," it said.

"In the history of India, no prime minister has lowered the dignity of his post as much as Modi has," Kharge, Congress' president, wrote on X formerly known as Twitter.

The commission can issue warnings and suspend candidates for a certain amount of time over violations of the code of conduct.

"We decline [to] comment," a spokesperson for the commission told the Press Trust of India news agency on Monday.

In his speech, Modi also repeated a Hindu nationalist trope that Muslims were overtaking the Hindu population by having more children.

Hindus make up 80 per cent of India's 1.4 billion people, while the country's 200 million Muslims are 14 per cent.

Official data shows that fertility rates among Muslims have dropped the fastest among religious groups in recent decades, from 4.4 in 1992 to 1993 to 2.3 between 2019 to 2021, just higher than Hindus at 1.94.

Modi's BJP has previously referred to Muslims as infiltrators and cast them as illegal migrants who crossed into India from Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Several states run by the BJP have also made laws that restrict interfaith marriage, citing the unproven conspiracy theory of " love jihad," which claims Muslim men use marriage to convert Hindu women.

Through it all, Modi has largely stayed silent, and critics say that has emboldened some of his most extreme supporters and enabled more hate speech against Muslims.

Biden’s planned Morehouse College commencement speech spurs alumni protest

President, scheduled to speak at the historically Black campus before the start of the Israel-Gaza war, will give speech on 19 May

Joe Biden will be the commencement speaker at Morehouse College in Georgia, giving the Democrat a key spotlight at one of the nation’s pre-eminent historically Black campuses but potentially exposing him to uncomfortable protests as he seeks re-election against Donald Trump.

The White House confirmed on Tuesday that Biden would speak on 19 May at the alma mater of the civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr, and then address the graduating class at the United States Military Academy at West Point on 25 May.

The Morehouse announcement has drawn some backlash among the school’s faculty and supporters who are critical of Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war. That could put the White House and Biden’s re-election campaign in a difficult position as the president works to shore up the racially diverse coalition that propelled him to the Oval Office.

By Tuesday afternoon, some Morehouse alumni were circulating an online letter that condemns the administration’s invitation to Biden and seeking signatures to pressure Morehouse’s president, David Thomas, to rescind it.

The letter, obtained by the Associated Press, claimed Biden’s approach to Israel effectively supports genocide in Gaza and runs counter to the pacifism that King expressed with his opposition to the Vietnam war.

“In inviting President Biden to campus, the college affirms a cruel standard that complicity in genocide merits no sanction from the institution that produced one of the towering advocates for nonviolence of the twentieth century,” the letter states, emphasizing King’s stance that “war is a hell that diminishes” humanity as a whole. “If the college cannot affirm this noble tradition of justice by rescinding its invitation to President Biden, then the college should reconsider its attachment to Dr King.”

Late last week, before the school and the White House formally announced commencement plans, Morehouse provost Kendrick Brown, Thomas’s top lieutenant, sent an email to all faculty acknowledging concerns about “rumors” and affirming that the school issued the invitation to Biden last September. That would have been before Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October, spurring the sustained counteroffensive that the Morehouse alumni letter called an act of genocide against Palestinians. Brown’s email did not reference anything about the Middle East conflict.

Brown invited faculty to an online forum, scheduled for Thursday afternoon, to discuss the matter. But, he added: “Please know going into this conversation that the College does not plan to rescind its accepted invitation to President Biden.”

Morehouse officials have not responded to an Associated Press inquiry.

Asked about the concerns from some faculty members, the White House deputy press secretary, Andrew Bates, said Biden was eager to speak at the school and added: “Commencements are about the graduates, their families and their loved ones, about celebrating the accomplishments of the graduates.

“I’m not going to weigh in on processes happening at Morehouse, but he looks forward to going there and celebrating with the graduates,” he added.

Earlier Tuesday, Thomas released a statement to BET.com that, like the provost’s faculty letter, highlighted the September timing of the invitation to Biden.

Thomas said Morehouse officials “eagerly anticipate” the president’s visit, which he called “a reminder of our institution’s enduring legacy and impact, as well as our continued commitment to excellence, progress and positive change.”

The Rev Stephen Green, pastor of the St Luke AME church in Harlem and an author of the alumni letter, said in an interview that his group had reached out to several Morehouse trustees and hoped to speak with Thomas. Green, who graduated in 2014, called the effort part of a “common thread of protest and activism in the Morehouse tradition” of social and political engagement.

“We hope this would send a strong message that we are serious about the values we were taught,” Green said, adding that he wants to see Biden forcefully advocate for a Palestinian state and an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

Beyond any dissatisfaction over Israel, polling suggests Biden may have work to do with Black Americans generally. More than half of Black adults approve of how he is handling his job as president, according to an AP-NORC poll conducted in March, but that is down significantly from when he took office and 94% approved of his performance.

Biden has increasingly encountered protests this year from progressives who assert that he is too supportive of Israel. The issue has proven vexing for the president. He has long joined the US foreign policy establishment in embracing Israel as an indispensable Middle East ally. Yet he also has criticized the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu , for mounting civilian deaths in Gaza and told him that future US aid depends on Israel taking steps to protect civilians.

'Deepest apology.' OU's pause means female, Black students won't get $450K in scholarships

Editor's note: Excluded from the long list of scholarships award at The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism' s April 23 awards banquet were $46,000 in scholarships designated for minority and female students. University wide, about $450,000 in scholarships in those and other categories will not be awarded.

Eddith A. Dashiell is the director of the journalism school. She gave the speech below about the E.W. Scripp's 12 unawarded scholarships.

Over the last few years, we have seen a growing backlash against d iversity, equity and inclusion. That backlash has reached higher education.  

States like Oklahoma and Florida have abolished DEI offices, programs and curriculum. 

As of tonight, Ohio does not have such a law. 

There is no state law preventing Ohio University from continuing its DEI efforts and making our campus a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students —especially students from underrepresented groups, who were born here and are also citizens of the United States.

OHIO News has published numerous articles demonstrating its commitment to diversity and its successful DEI efforts.

In June 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a decision focus on race-based admissions policies. 

In January 2024, we were quietly told that this 2023 U.S. Supreme Court decision was being stretched to apply to race-based/diversity scholarships. All diversity-based scholarships were being “paused.”

What is the impact on E.W. Scripps school of Journalism

Twelve scholarships totaling more than $46,000 will not be rewarded.

According to the Columbus media’s coverage of the university’s decision to pause the awarding of diversity scholarships for 24-25 school year was based on advice from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. It was quoted as saying race-based scholarships discriminate against white students.

How can 12 scholarships discriminate against white students who make up 84% of our majors?

We may not be able to award these scholarships, but the donors deserve to be honored and thanked, anyway.

$46,000 in scholarship not going to Black, female and other OU journalism students

∎ One scholarship was established by former associate dean of the college Dee Dee Riffe. The Eliza Al-corn Clark Memorial Scholarship honors Dr. Riffe’s grandmother. 

Last year we honored Dee Dee’s grandmother by awarding a $900 scholarship to an African American sophomore. This year we cannot honor her grandmother because we are not allowed to award the Eliza Alcorn Clark Scholarship. I expect Dee Dee will be contacting me soon when she realizes that she has not received her thank you note.

∎ Margaret McKechnie is a 1966 graduate of Scripps. 

She spent most of her career working in communications for the banking industry and wanted to give back to young women coming up in journalism. Last year we awarded two Margaret A. McKechnie Scholarships to two of our female students who were from out of state. Race was not part of the criteria. 

Each scholarship was $6,000 each. This year: No McKechnie scholarships.

∎ Edward J. Martin Memorial Scholarship awarded to a student who works in print journalism and has financial need.  Preference was to go to a student who was Native American. Not a requirement.  We have awarded the Martin Memorial Scholarship for years to students interested in print journalism with financial need. 

Doubtful every student was of indigenous descent. This year: no student will get this $2,000 scholarship.

∎The Ford Scholar Award is intended for minority student with financial need. A thousand dollars was awarded last year. This year the Ford Scholarship goes to no student.  

∎The Frances and Margaret Channell Scholarship honors mother and daughter alums of the school. Frances worked as a reporter and teacher. Maggie spent many years working in administrative positions on campus. 

∎Last year the Channell Scholarship was $5,000, which went to a female who lived in a specific area of Ohio.  This year no student will receive the award.

∎ Long-time former director, Dr. Ralph Izard was a strong advocate for diversity in the school. 

He was the director who hired me. There was a time when we had as many as eight African American faculty in the school.  Dr. Izard’s generosity was part of a scholarship which has been supplemented by many former Posties to create the Ralph Izard—Post Scholarship.  

The primary criterion was that the student work for The Post.  Preference was to have been given to a minority student—but that was not a requirement. Last year’s winner received a $2,100 scholarship. This year no Postie will receive the Izard-Post Scholarship.

∎ Another one of our diversity scholarships honors one of the Scripps J-School and Post newspaper’s most distinguished alums, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and columnist Clarence Page.

The donor noted that “it is hoped the recipients of this scholarship will exhibit the qualities that brought Page success and enabled him to improve the trajectory of American journalism.” 

Goal was help increase diversity at The Post, but some of our past recipients have worked in other student media, and the donors have been pleased with the quality and caliber of our previous awardees.

For (the school of journalism's) centennial, donors chipped into to bump this award up. Last year, we were able to award two $6,000 scholarships.  For the 24-25 academic year, the Page Scholarship goes to no student. I have heard rumors that the donors are not happy.

∎ Andy Alexander worked with Clarence Page at The Post during their days here at OU.

Editor of The Post was his first journalism job and before retirement, one of his last was the ombudsman for the Washington Post. 

The Andrew Alexander Scholarship was for news and information major from an underrepresented group. For years we have awarded at least one Andy Alexander Scholarship.  Last year we awarded two Alexander scholarships in the amount of $3,000.  No Alexander Scholarship will be awarded for next academic year.

∎ Our students in the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism have also been blessed with support from the Scripps Howard Fund. 

Among the numerous scholarships the Scripps Fund has provided our students is the Scripps Multicultural Scholarship to help under-represented students pay for their education. Last year we awarded a $2,000 scholarship to a deserving student for the 23-24 academic year. For the 2024-25 academic year, however, there will be no Scripps Multicultural Scholarship award.

Hundreds of dogs and horses put down by Armed Forces’ vets after serving in war zones

Military animals euthanised for ‘failing to maintain standards’, welfare reasons or for being regarded as an ‘unacceptable risk to safety’

Dogs are used by all three of the Armed Forces and have become a key part of special forces operations

Almost 1,300 British military dogs have been destroyed by Army vets after serving in war zones around the world, The Telegraph can reveal.

The dogs responsible for protecting troops against attacks by insurgents as well as sniffing out buried bobby traps were put down after falling ill or because they were regarded as being too fierce to rehome.

Some fit dogs were euthanised for “failing to maintain standards” and “welfare reasons”, while others were destroyed after being described as “old and worn out”. In 2020 six dogs were put down for being an “unacceptable risk to safety”.

Military vets also euthanised 309 horses after they became ill or lame, although some were also destroyed because they had become too dangerous to handle.

Horses are used by the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery.

Two military horses that suffered serious injuries after running loose through London now look set to recover from their wounds but the Ministry of Defence has said that it is too early to say whether they will return to duties .

Seven horses and six soldiers from the Household Cavalry were on an extended exercise in Belgravia last Wednesday when the horses were spooked by builders moving rubble.

Four service personnel were thrown from their horses and four of the animals, named Vida, Trojan, Quaker and Tennyson, got loose, smashing into vehicles, including a double-decker bus and causing a number of injuries.

Meanwhile defence sources have said that many of the dogs killed for safety reasons over the last two decades were trained as protection animals and taught to be aggressive when in “working mode”.

One serving dog handler said: “Any dog trained to be aggressive is effectively being given a death sentence because they are almost impossible to rehome.”

The figures from a series of Freedom of Information requests by The Telegraph show that between 2002 and January 2019 up to 1,200 dogs were destroyed and a further 78 dogs were put down between 2019 and 2022.

The figures for the number of dogs destroyed last year have not yet been released by the Ministry of Defence.

Dogs are used by all three of the Armed Forces and have become a key part of special forces operations, being used extensively in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria.

Both the Special Air Service and the Special Boat Service canine teams use the Belgian Malinois, a highly intelligent and fearless animal which can be trained to be both aggressive and agile.

Dogs have also been used to detect explosives , often buried beneath the ground and were responsible for saving the lives of hundreds of soldiers during the 20-year-long war in Afghanistan.

Four dogs in Afghanistan won the Dickin Medal – the animal version of the Victoria Cross – including a labrador called Sadie, which saved lives by spotting a bomb in 2005. Also honoured were Treo, a labrador which found roadside bombs in 2008, and Theo, a springer spaniel who found 114 bombs and gun caches.

Colonel Phil Ingram, a former Army Intelligence Officer, who employed military dog teams during his career, said: “Military dogs are an essential and integral part of operations and over recent years have saved many lives. However, their behaviour is focused on a military environment making it extremely difficult to rehome them when injured or when they come to the end of their service. 

“It is tragic that so many loyal four legged servants have to be put to sleep, but like many veterans they would find the transition out of military service extremely difficult if not impossible in many cases.”

But Elisa Allen, vice president of the animal charity People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said: “Animals are not soldiers, nor are they pieces of military equipment to be used and then decommissioned at the end of their enforced service.”

“While every effort must be made to give them a peaceful and comfortable retirement – unless they’re severely ill or wounded or deemed a true danger to the community, in which case painless euthanasia may be the only option – the truly decent thing would be for the Ministry of Defence to stop using dogs, horses, and other animals altogether,” said Ms Allen. 

“In this age of technology and remote warfare, to still be dragging dogs and horses into dangerous, involuntary servitude in human wars and conflicts is uncivilised and unconscionable,” she added.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said: “Working animals have an important role in our military and form unique bonds with our troops.

“We make every effort to rehome them after their service but if they have a condition causing unnecessary suffering or pose an unacceptable risk to public safety, in some cases they have to be put down.”
