How-To Geek

7 google slides features for eye-catching presentations.

Make a slideshow that stands out.

Quick Links

  • Apply Image Effects
  • Crop an Image to a Shape
  • Place Text in Front of an Image
  • Shorten Lengthy Videos
  • Insert a Chart or Graph
  • Position Slide Items With Guides
  • Use Subtle Slide Transitions

Assembling a professional slideshow can be intimidating if you don't feel creative or artistic. But that doesn't mean you can't make an appealing and successful presentation. Google Slides provides features to help you design an attractive slideshow.

1. Apply Image Effects

You may have an image or two that could use a little pizzazz. Google Slides offers shadow and reflection features that may give your picture or photo just the right touch.

Related: How to Make an Image Transparent in Google Slides

Select your image and choose "Format Options" in the toolbar. When the sidebar opens, check the box for Drop Shadow or Reflection. Then, expand that section to adjust the transparency , distance, angle, or size.

This lets you take ordinary images up a notch.

2. Crop an Image to a Shape

Another way to make an image stand out is by cropping it to a shape . This is referred to as using a mask in Google Slides.

Select your image and click the Mask Image arrow attached to the Crop Image button in the toolbar. Move to Shapes, Arrows, Callouts, or Equation to see the available shapes in the pop-out menu.

Then simply click the shape you want to use. You'll see your image cropped to fit the shape.

To make additional adjustments to the image, select "Format Options" in the toolbar. You can change the size, rotation, position, brightness, or contrast.

3. Place Text in Front of an Image

For things like a title slide, section divider, or conclusion, you may want a unique look. You can place text in front of (or even behind) an image.

Related: How to Place Images Behind or in Front of Text in Google Slides

With your image and text on the slide, move the text box on top of the image. If the text displays behind the image, select the box and head to the Arrange tab.

Choose Order and pick either "Bring to Front" to place the text box on top of all slide elements or "Bring Forward" to place the text box one level up.

This lets you create a different look or save space, and it works well for welcome, transitional, or wrap-up slides.

4. Shorten Lengthy Videos

If you want to include a video in your slideshow but trim it to only show a certain part of the clip, you can do so right in Google Slides.

Select your video and click "Format Options" in the toolbar. When the sidebar opens, expand Video Playback.

If you have the exact times you want to use, enter those in the Start At and End At boxes. You'll then only see that part of the video when you play it in the presentation.

If you aren't certain of the times, press Play in the preview of the video in the sidebar. When you reach the spot where you want to start the video, pause the playback and click "Use Current Time" below the Start At box. Then, do the same for the end time to the right.

You can then play the video on your slide to make sure you've got the timing correct or adjust it further in the sidebar. Optionally, you can check the box for Mute Audio if needed.

Related: How to Add Videos and Customize Playback in Google Slides

5. Insert a Chart or Graph

Slideshows are all about visuals. So, if you have data you want to present, using a chart or graph is a good way to do it. If you have a chart in Google Sheets you want to use, you can simply insert it. Alternatively, you can create a graph from scratch.

Select the slide where you want the chart. Go to Insert > Chart and choose a chart type to create one or "From Sheets" to import one.

If you make your own graph, you'll see sample data when you insert the chart. Use the arrow on the top right to pick "Open Source."

Google Sheets will open with the sample data in a new tab. Then just add your own data.

Return to the Google Slides tab and update the chart using the Update button. You'll then see your updated visual.

From there, you can do things like resize the chart to add some text or a title or apply a border. For a full tutorial on creating a chart in Google Slides , check out our how-to.

Related: How to Create a Graph in Google Slides

6. Position Slide Items With Guides

To make sure that your images, videos, text, shapes, and other items are placed neatly on the slide, you can use the built-in guides.

Go to View, move to Guides, and pick "Show Guides." You'll see horizontal and vertical lines appear which help you to line up your items perfectly.

To make aligning items to the guides even better, you can add a snap. Head back to View, move to Snap To, and pick "Guides."

Once you enable the second feature, you'll see red horizontal and vertical lines appear as you drag your item on the slide. You can then release the item once it's lined up with those indicators.

For additional details on using guides in Google Slides , take a look at our tutorial.

Related: How to Use Guides to Position Items in Google Slides

7. Use Subtle Slide Transitions

Rather than a sudden jolt from slide to slide, consider using subtle slide transitions. You can apply a fade, dissolve, or other effect for a nicer transition from one slide to the next .

Select a slide to start with; you can easily apply the transition to all slides later. Click "Transition" in the toolbar. When the sidebar opens, expand the section below Slide Transition.

Use the drop-down box to choose an effect. You'll see dissolve, fade, slide, flip, and more.

After you pick an effect, press "Play" at the bottom of the sidebar to see a preview. You can also adjust the speed of the transition using the slider.

To use the transition throughout your presentation, click "Apply to All Slides." When you finish, simply close the sidebar. When you play your slideshow, you'll see that attractive transition between slides.

With tools for sprucing up images , removing unnecessary video content, and replacing data with visuals, consider these Google Slides features for your next presentation.

How to Insert 3D Model in Google Slides (A Step-by-Step Guide)

Want an easy way to make your presentations mesmerizing? Just add 3D models! But how can you integrate 3D images into Google Slides smoothly? No worries, we've got you covered. Follow our simple step-by-step instructions to insert stunning 3D elements with no headaches.

How to Add a 3D Model in Google Slides?

Below is the step-by-step guide to adding a 3d model in google slides:

Step 1: Open Google Slides

Go to the nine dots (Google Apps icon) on the top right corner of your Google page. From the dropdown list, select “Slides.” You will see a plus sign, navigate and click “Create New Presentation.”

Step 2: Customize the Slide

Once your new presentation is open, you can choose a color you prefer by clicking “Background” and then “Color.” Choose a color or a gradient based on your design needs. In this tutorial, we picked a gradient.

Step 3: Show Rulers and Guides

Go to “View” in the top menu, and select “Show ruler” and “Show guides.” To add more guides, click on “View” then “Guides” and select “Add horizontal guide” or “Add vertical guide.” Place the guides according to your design needs.

Step 4: Insert 3D Shapes

Click on the “Shapes” icon in the toolbar. Like a cylinder, choose a 3D shape under the “Shapes” tab. Draw your shape on the slide by clicking and dragging.

Step 5: Customize Your 3D Shape

Select your shape and right-click on it. Choose “Format options.” Apply a gradient or a specific color to give your shape a 3D appearance. Copy and paste your 3D shape to create a pattern or design. Use the shortcut Ctrl + C to copy and Ctrl + V to paste.

Readers Feedback and Experience:

The steps above are relatively straightforward and don't require prior experience with design software. Google Slides has an intuitive interface that makes it easy to navigate.

However, while this method gives shapes a 3D-like appearance, it’s worth noting that they are not actual 3D models but rather 2D shapes with 3D effects. It could limit the depth and realism of design presentations for those used to working with actual 3D modeling software.

The gradient option was quite useful in giving the shapes a more three-dimensional look. The options for aligning the text and shapes were simple and effective; the guides and rulers are a significant help when trying to achieve a symmetrical design.

One problem I encountered was differentiating between the center guide and the margin guides initially, but I managed to sort this out with close attention.

Overall, this method is practical and efficient for creating a basic 3D effect in a slide presentation.

Where Can I Download Free 3D Model Templates?

Below are two good options for downloading free 3d model templates:

Step 1 : Navigate to Justfreeslide in your web browser.

Step 2 : Browse the available 3D models organized into categories like technology, business, healthcare, etc.

What File Formats Are Supported For 3d Model Insertion In Google Slides?

Google Slides supports inserting 3D models in the .dae (Collada) and .kmz (Google Earth) file formats, allowing users to incorporate detailed, textured 3D designs into their presentations.

Can I Adjust The Size And Position Of The Inserted 3d Model?

Yes, after inserting a 3D model into Google Slides, users can easily resize and reposition it. Click on the model to reveal resizing handles, then drag these to adjust size, and click and drag the model to move it to a desired location on the slide.

Can I Animate The Inserted 3D Model In Google Slides?

No, Google Slides does not support animations for inserted 3D models. To add motion to a 3D model in a presentation, users might consider alternative presentation software or utilizing animated GIFs as a workaround.

While inserting 3D shapes in Google Slides provides some 3D effects, true 3D model insertion is limited. Adding 3D shapes like cylinders is relatively easy, using the shape tools and formatting options. To get more realistic 3D models, Collada or Google Earth files can be imported. However, animation support is lacking.

Those seeking a full-featured alternative for presentations and other office tasks should consider WPS Office . Available on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, WPS Presentation rivals PowerPoint, Google slides, etc., with slide templates. Its affordability, seamless compatibility, and familiar interface set WPS Office apart as an excellent single solution for diverse office needs.

There are a few options for adding 3D effects to your Google Slides presentations:

  • 3D Shapes – Simple shapes like cubes, cylinders, pyramids. Easy to insert but limited realism.
  • 3D Models – More complex and realistic 3D models. Need to be imported from external sources.
  • 3D Buildings and Maps – Leverage Google Earth data to add 3D buildings and terrain.

Inserting 3D Shapes

The easiest way to add basic 3D elements is by using the built-in 3D shape tools in Google Slides.

  • Open your presentation and select the Insert tab
  • Click on Shapes and choose a 3D option like Cube or Cylinder
  • Draw the 3D shape onto your slide, resize as needed
  • Customize with color, borders, rotation to achieve desired look

The 3D shapes allow for some customizations but are fairly simplistic. For more complex 3D models, external assets need to be imported.

Importing 3D Models

Google Slides supports importing 3D models from Google Poly, SketchUp, and KMZ files containing Collada (.dae) 3D assets.

  • Obtain 3D model file from source like Google Poly
  • In Google Slides, go to Insert > 3D model
  • Select Choose from file and upload appropriate 3D file
  • Model will now be inserted and can be resized/repositioned
  • Verify model file size is under 3MB
  • Supported formats include .skp, .kmz, .dae
  • Textured models not fully supported

There are also options to trace building shapes from Google Maps or create custom 3D text effects.

Incorporating 3D Maps/Buildings

Leveraging Google Earth integration, you can insert interactive 3D maps and building shapes into slides:

  • Insert > Google Earth
  • Search for location, adjust view
  • Click Insert to add view to slide
  • Can customize angle, zoom on inserted map

While 3D capability in Google Slides is a bit limited, these options help presentations stand out with multi-dimensional visuals. Carefully incorporate 3D elements when they can enhance comprehension or engagement.

Essential Marketing Models for PowerPoint and Google Slides

Download the main marketing models for your PowerPoint and Google Slides presentations. An essential marketing toolset for the managers who want to optimize their strategic business decisions. Also, a great resource for the students to learn and understand marketing concepts and tools.

The marketing models: valuable tools to make better strategic decisions

Managers must handle the appropriate tools to take strategic decisions. Even if some of the most popular models are (quite) old, they are still on the top managers’ list. For example, we can think of the SWOT analysis or the BCG matrix.

Strategic decisions are those crucial steps that can influence the future of a business. And fully understanding where we (as an organization) stand is key. Indeed, organizations evolve in a complex and changing environment where both internal and external factors have a strong impact.

In that challenging context, marketing models are essential tools to identify and understand these factors.

And this is the reason why these models are so useful: they allow all the vast quantity of information available to be gathered, structured, processed, and analyzed in a comprehensive manner.

In other words, the marketing models are tools which help marketers organize and rationalize the information to make better strategic business decisions.

Unlocking visual creativity

Imagen is our family of image generation and editing models. These models build on advances in large Transformer language models and diffusion models. This family of models is being incorporated into multiple Google products, including: Image generation in Google Slides, Cloud Vertex AI and Android’s Generative AI wallpaper.

Imagen is a text-to-image model with a high degree of photorealism and deep language representations. Imagen consists of multiple diffusion models, which start by generating a small image and progressively increase its resolution. The basic intuition is that diffusion models learn to generate structure from noise, conditioned on the provided text prompts.

The Pathways Autoregressive Text-to-Image model (Parti) , is an autoregressive text-to-image generation model that achieves high-fidelity photorealistic image generation and supports content-rich synthesis involving complex compositions and world knowledge.

Muse is a text-to-image Transformer model that achieves strong image generation performance while being significantly more efficient than diffusion or autoregressive models. It’s trained on a masked modeling task in a discrete visual token space, conditioned on a text embedding extracted from a pre-trained large language model (LLM). Muse also supports text-guided and mask-based image editing out-of-the-box.

Google Trains User Interface and Infographics Understanding AI Model ScreenAI

Apr 16, 2024 2 min read

Anthony Alford

Infoq article contest.

Google Research recently developed ScreenAI , a multimodal AI model for understanding infographics and user interfaces. ScreenAI is based on the PaLI architecture and achieves state-of-the-art performance on several tasks.

ScreenAI is pre-trained on a dataset of screenshots generated by crawling the web and automatically interacting with apps. The researchers used several off-the-shelf models AI to generate synthetic training data, including OCR to annotate the screenshots and an LLM to generate user questions about the screenshots. After pretraining and fine-tuning, the result is a five billion parameter model that can answer questions about UI screens and infographics, as well as summarize or navigate screens. ScreenAI set new performance records on the WebSRC and MoTIF benchmarks, and outperformed other similarly-sized models on the Chart QA , DocVQA , and InfographicVQA benchmarks. To help the wider research community in developing and evaluating similar models, Google released three new evaluation datasets for screen-based question-answering (QA) models. According to Google:

While our model is best-in-class, we note that, on some tasks, further research is needed to bridge the gap with models like GPT-4 and Gemini, which are orders of magnitude larger. To encourage further research, we re- lease a dataset with this unified representation, as well as two other datasets to enable more comprehensive benchmarking of models on screen-related tasks.

ScreenAI is based on the Pathways Language and Image model (PaLI) architecture, which combines a Vision Transformer (ViT) with an encoder-decoder Large Language Model (LLM), such as T5. The Google team made a key modification to this base architecture. Because UIs and infographics often have a "wide variety of resolutions and aspect ratios," they modified the image patching step of the ViT to use the patching strategy from the Pix2Struct model. This allows the model to adjust the patch grid according to the input image's shape.

To generate pretraining data, the researchers first created an automated annotation pipeline. This system, given a screenshot image, can detect and classify UI and infographic elements such as images, pictograms, text, and buttons. The result is a screen schema  annotation, which lists the UI elements along with bounding boxes indicating their location within the screen.

The screen schema data is then used to generate synthetic training data. The team fed the schema to an LLM along with a prompt telling the LLM the schema represents a screenshot and asking the LLM to generate questions a human user might ask about the screenshot. The researchers also had the LLM generate summarizations of the screenshots. Overall, the final dataset contained around 400M samples.

To evaluate the model, the researchers fine-tuned it on several publicly available datasets for navigation, summarization, and QA. They compared the model's performance to state-of-the-art (SOTA) as well as to other models with 5B parameters or fewer. In addition to setting new SOTA performance on two benchmarks and outperforming other 5B parameter models on three  benchmarks, it was "competitive" on two additional benchmarks.

Several users of X posted their thoughts about ScreenAI. One wondered whether Google might use the model for ranking search results. Another wrote :

The competition is heating up. GPT-4 Vision already faces strong competition from Qwen-VL-Max, and now it seems Google is entering the arena with ScreenAI. Google's entry better impress!

Although Google has not released the model code or weights, they have open-sourced their evaluation datasets ScreenQA and Screen Annotation on GitHub.

Stratechery by Ben Thompson

On the business, strategy, and impact of technology.

Gemini 1.5 and Google’s Nature

It was impossible to miss the leading message at yesterday’s Google Cloud Next keynote : Google has the best infrastructure for AI. This was CEO Sundar Pichai in his video greeting:

I want to highlight just a few reasons Google Cloud is showing so much progress. One is our deep investments in AI. We’ve known for a while that AI would transform every industry and company, including our own. That’s why we’ve been building AI infrastructure for over a decade, including TPUs, now in their 5th generation. These advancements have helped customer train and serve cutting-edge language models. These investments put us in the forefront of the AI platform shift.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian made the priority clear as well:

Today we’re going to focus on how Google is helping leading companies transform their operations and become digital and AI leaders, which is the new way to cloud. We have many important advances, starting with our infrastructure.

What was most interesting about the keynote, though, is what that infrastructure makes possible, and, by extension, what that says about Google’s ability to compete.

One of the most surprising things about large language models (LLMs) is how much they know; from the very beginning, though, hallucinations have been a concern. Hallucinations are, of course, part of what makes LLMs so impressive: a computer is actually being creative! It’s also a feature that isn’t particularly impressive to the enterprise customers that this keynote was directed at.

To that end, Kurian, shortly after going over Google’s infrastructure advantages, talked about “grounding”, both in terms of the company’s Gemini model broadly, and for enterprise use cases specifically in the context of Google’s Vertex AI model management service:

To augment models, Vertex AI provides managed tooling to connect your model to enterprise applications and databases, using extensions and function-calling. Vertex also provides retrieval augmented generation (RAG) combining the strengths of retrieval and generative models to provide high quality personalized answers and recommendations. Vertex can augment models with up-to-date knowledge from the web and from your organization, combining generative AI with your enterprise truth. Today we have a really important announcement: you can now ground with Google Search, perhaps the world’s most trusted source of factual information, with a deep understanding of the world’s knowledge. Grounding Gemini’s responses with Google Search improves response quality and significantly reduces hallucinations. Second, we’re also making it easy to ground your models with data from your enterprise databases and applications, and any database anywhere. Once you’ve chosen the right model, tuned it, and connected it with your enterprise truth, Vertex’s MLOps can help you manage and monitor models.

A RAG implementation using Google Search is an obvious win, and mirrors ChatGPT’s integration with Bing (or Microsoft Copilot in Bing): the LLM provides answers when it can, and searches the web for things it doesn’t know, a particularly useful feature if you are looking for more recent information.

A more impressive demonstration of grounding, though, was in the context of integrating Gemini with Google’s BigQuery data warehouse and Looker business intelligence platform :

In this demo, the worker gets an alert that a particular product is selling out; using generative AI the worker can see sales trends, find similar models, and create a plan of action for dealing with declining inventory for delivery to her team.

What is notable is not the demo specifics (which is unapologetically made-up for Cymbal, Google’s demo brand ); rather, note the role of the LLM: it is not providing information or taking specific actions, but rather serving as a much more accessible natural language interface to surface and collect data that would otherwise take considerably more expertise and time. In other words, it is trustworthy because it is grounded through integration Google is promising with its other enterprise data services.

At the same time, that last section didn’t really follow on from the introduction: yes, those LLMs leveraging Google or BigQuery are running on Google’s infrastructure, but other companies or startups can build something similar. This is where the rest of Pichai’s introduction comes in:

We also continue to build capable AI models to make products like search, Maps, and Android radically more helpful. In December, we took our next big step with Gemini, our largest and most capable model yet. We’ve been bringing it to our products and to enterprises and developers through our APIs. We’ve already introduced our next generation Gemini 1.5 Pro. It’s been in private preview in Vertex AI. 1.5 Pro shows dramatically enhanced performance and includes a breakthrough in long context understanding. That means it can run 1 million tokens of information consistently, opening up new possibilities for enterprises to create, discover, and build using AI. There’s also Gemini’s multi-modal capabilities, which can process audio, video, text, code and more. With these two advances, enterprises can do things today that just weren’t possible with AI before.

Google hasn’t said how Gemini 1.5 was made, but clearly the company has overcome the key limitation of traditional transformers: memory requirements increase quadratically with context length. One promising approach is Ring Attention with Blockwise Transformers , which breaks long contexts into pieces to be computed individually even as the various devices computing those pieces simultaneously communicate to make sense of the context as a whole; in this case memory requirements scale linearly with context length, and can be extended by simply adding more devices to the ring topology.

This is where Google’s infrastructure comes in: the company not only has a massive fleet of TPUs, but has also been developing those TPUs to run in parallel at every level of the stack, from chip to cluster to even data centers (this latter requirement is more pertinent for training than inference); if there is a solution that calls for scale, Google is the best placed to provide it, and it seems the company has done just that with Gemini 1.5.

To that end, and per Pichai’s closing line, almost all of the other demos in the keynote were implicitly leveraging Gemini 1.5’s context window.

In a Gemini for Workspaces demo, the worker evaluated two statements of work against each other, and against the company’s compliance document:

Here are the key quotes:

Google Drive is ready without any additional AI pre-work… Each of these documents is over 70 pages. It would have taken me hours to review these docs, but instead Gemini is going to help me find a clean answer to save me a ton of time… Before I proceed with this vendor, I need to ensure that no compliance issues exist, and I’m going to be honest, I have not memorized every rule in our compliance rulebook because it is over 100 pages. I would have to need to scour the 80 pages of this proposal and compare it manually with the 100 pages of the rulebook. So instead, in the side panel I ask, “Does this offer comply with the following” and I’m going to just @-mention our compliance rulebook, hit Enter, and see what Gemini has to say. So interesting: Gemini has found an issue, because the supplier has not listed their security certifications. Because Gemini is grounded in my company’s data, with source citations to specific files, I can trust this response and start to troubleshoot before selecting a vendor.

The key distinction between this demo and the last one is that quote at the beginning: a large context window just works in a far greater number of use cases, without any fiddly RAG implementations or special connections to external data stores; just upload the files you need to analyze, and you’re off.

In a Creative Agent with Imagen demo, the worker was seeking to create marketing images and storyboards for an outdoor product:

Here is the key quote:

The creative agent can analyze our previous campaigns to understand our unique brand style and apply it to new ideas. In this case, the creative agent has analyzed over 3,000 brand images, descriptions, videos, and documents of other products that we have in our catalog, contained within Google Drive, to create this summary…The creative agent was able to use Gemini Pro’s 1 million token context window and it’s ability to reason across text, images, and video to generate this summary.

This was, to be fair, one of the weaker demos: the brand summary and marketing campaign weren’t that impressive, and the idea of creating a podcast with synthetic voices is technically impressive and also something that will never be listened to. That, though, is impressive in its own right: as I noted in an Update when Gemini 1.5 was first announced , “a massively larger context window makes it possible to do silly stuff”, and silly stuff often turns into serious capabilities.

In a Gemini Code Assistant Demo (formerly Duet AI for Developers), a developer new to a job (and the codebase) was tasked with making a change to a site’s homepage:

For the developers out there, you know that this means we’re going to need to add padding in the homepage, modify some views, make sure the configs are changed for our microservices, and typically, it would take me a week or two to even just get familiarized with our company’s code base which has over 100,000 lines of code over 11 services. But now, with Gemini Code Assist, as a new engineer on the team, I can be more productive than ever and can accomplish all of this work in just a matter of minutes. This is because Gemini’s code transformations with full codebase awareness allows us to easily reason through our entire codebase, and in comparison, other models out there can’t handle anything beyond 12,000 to 15,000 lines of code. Gemini with Code Assist is so intelligent that we can just give it our business requirements, including the visual design…Gemini Code Assist doesn’t just suggest code edits; it provides clear recommendations, and makes sure that all of these recommendations align with [the company’s] security and compliance requirements…

And the conclusion:

Let’s recap: behind the scenes Gemini has analyzed my entire codebase in GitLab; it has implemented a new feature; and has ensured that all of the code generated is compatible with my company’s standards and requirements.

Again, leave aside the implausibility of this demo: the key takeaway is the capabilities unlocked when the model is able to have all of the context around a problem while working; this is only possible with — and here the name is appropriate — a long context window, and that is ultimately enabled by Google’s infrastructure.

Google’s Nature

In case it isn’t clear, I think that this keynote was by far the most impressive presentation Google has made in the AI era, not least because the company knows exactly what its advantages are. Several years ago I wrote an Article called Microsoft’s Monopoly Hangover that discussed the company’s then-ongoing transition away from Windows as the center of its strategy; the central conceit was a comparison to Lou Gerstner’s 1990’s transformation of IBM.

The great thing about a monopoly is that a company can do anything, because there is no competition; the bad thing is that when the monopoly is finished the company is still capable of doing anything at a mediocre level, but nothing at a high one because it has become fat and lazy. To put it another way, for a former monopoly “big” is the only truly differentiated asset.

My argument was that business models could be changed: IBM did it, and Microsoft was in the process of doing so when I wrote that. Moreover, Gerstner had shown that culture could be changed as well, and Nadella did just that at Microsoft . What couldn’t be changed was nature: IBM was a company predicated on breadth, not specialization; that’s why Gerstner was right to not break apart the company but to instead deliver Internet solutions to enterprises. Similarly, Microsoft was a company predicated on integration around Windows; the company’s shift to services centered on Teams as Microsoft’s operating system in the cloud was also true to the company’s nature.

Google is facing many of the same challenges after its decades long dominance of the open web: all of the products shown yesterday rely on a different business model than advertising, and to properly execute and deliver on them will require a cultural shift to supporting customers instead of tolerating them. What hasn’t changed — because it is the company’s nature, and thus cannot — is the reliance on scale and an overwhelming infrastructure advantage. That, more than anything, is what defines Google, and it was encouraging to see that so explicitly put forward as an advantage.

Cries of Sexism Greet a Nike Olympic Reveal

The sporting giant offered a sneak peek at its track and field outfits for Team U.S.A., and an unexpected backlash ensued.

People wearing athletic clothing stand in a line on a stage.

By Vanessa Friedman

Ever since the Norwegian women’s beach handball team turned the fact that they were required to wear teeny-tiny bikini bottoms for competition into a cause célèbre, a quiet revolution has been brewing throughout women’s sports. It’s one that questions received conventions about what female athletes do — or don’t — have to wear to perform at their very best.

It has touched women’s soccer (why white shorts?), gymnastics (why not a unitard rather than a leotard?), field hockey (why a low-cut tank top?) and many more, including running.

So it probably should not have come as a shock to Nike that when it offered a sneak peek of the Team U.S.A. track and field unies during a Nike Air event in Paris celebrating its Air technology on Thursday (which also included looks for other Olympic athletes, like Kenya’s track and field team, France’s basketball team and Korea’s break dancing delegation), they were met with some less-than-enthusiastic reactions.

See, the two uniforms Nike chose to single out on the mannequins included a men’s compression tank top and mid-thigh-length compression shorts and a woman’s bodysuit, cut notably high on the hip. It looked sort of like a sporty version of a 1980s workout leotard. As it was displayed, the bodysuit seemed as if it would demand some complicated intimate grooming.

Citius Mag , which focuses on running news, posted a photo of the uniforms on Instagram, and many of its followers were not amused.

“What man designed the woman’s cut?” wrote one.

“I hope U.S.A.T.F. is paying for the bikini waxes,” wrote another. So went most of the more than 1,900 comments.

The running comedian Laura Green posted an Instagram reel in which she pretended to be trying on the look (“We’re feeling pretty, um, breezy,” she said) and checking out the rest of the athlete’s kit bag, which turned out to include hair spray, lip gloss and a “hysterectomy kit,” so the women would not have to worry about periods.

When asked, Nike did not address the brouhaha directly, but according to John Hoke, the chief innovation officer, the woman’s bodysuit and the man’s shorts and top are only two of the options Nike will have for its Olympic runners. There are “nearly 50 unique pieces across men’s and women’s and a dozen competition styles fine-tuned for specific events,” Mr. Hoke said.

Women will be able to opt for compression shorts, a crop top or tank and a bodysuit with shorts rather than bikini bottoms. The full slate of looks was not on hand in Paris but more will be revealed next week at the U.S. Olympic Committee media summit in New York. The Paris reveal was meant to be a teaser.

Mr. Hoke also pointed out that Nike consults with a large number of athletes at every stage of the uniform design. Its track and field roster includes Sha’Carri Richardson, who happened to be wearing the compression shorts during the Paris presentation, and Athing Mu. And there are certainly runners who like the high-cut brief. (The British Olympic sprinter Dina Asher-Smith , another Nike athlete, told The New York Times last summer that while she opts to run in briefs, she also leans toward a leotard style, rather than a two-piece.)

What Nike missed, however, was that in choosing those two looks as the primary preview for Team U.S.A., rather than, say, the matching shorts and tanks that will be also available, it shored up a longstanding inequity in sports — one that puts the body of a female athlete on display in a way it does not for the male athlete.

“Why are we presenting this sexualized outfit as the standard of excellence?” said Lauren Fleshman, a U.S. national champion distance runner and the author of “Good for a Girl.” “In part because we think that’s what nets us the most financial gain from sponsors or NIL opportunities, most of which are handed out by powerful men or people looking at it through a male gaze. But women are breaking records with ratings in sports where you don’t have to wear essentially a bathing suit to perform.”

The problem such imagery creates is twofold. When Nike chose to reveal the high-cut bodysuit as the first Olympics outfit, purposefully or not, the implication for anyone watching is that “this is what excellence looks like,” Ms. Fleshman said.

That perception filters down to young athletes and becomes the model girls think they have to adopt, often at a developmental stage when their relationships with their bodies are particularly fraught.

And more broadly, given the current political debate around adjudicating women’s bodies, it reinforces the idea that they are public property.

Still, Ms. Fleshman said, “I’m glad Nike put this image out as the crown jewel of Olympic Team design,” because it may act as the catalyst for another conversation that has been long overdue.

“If you showed this outfit to someone from the W.N.B.A. or women’s soccer, they would laugh in your face,” she said. “We shouldn’t have to normalize it for track and field anymore. Time’s up on that.”

Google announces Axion, its first custom Arm-based data center processor

google presentation models

Google Cloud on Tuesday joined AWS and Azure in announcing its first custom-built Arm processor, dubbed Axion. Based on Arm’s Neoverse 2 designs, Google says its Axion instances offer 30% better performance than other Arm-based instances from competitors like AWS and Microsoft and up to 50% better performance and 60% better energy efficiency than comparable X86-based instances.

Google did not provide any documentation to back these claims up and, l ike us, you’d probably like to know more about these chips. We asked a lot of questions, but Google politely declined to provide any additional information. No availability dates, no pricing, no additional technical data. Those “benchmark” results? The company wouldn’t even say which X86 instance it was comparing Axion to.

“Technical documentation, including benchmarking and architecture details, will be available later this year,” Google spokesperson Amanda Lam said.

Maybe the chips aren’t even ready yet? After all, it took Google a while to announce Arm-chips in the cloud, especially considering that Google has long built its in-house TPU AI chips and, more recently , custom Arm-based mobile chips for its Pixel phones. AWS launched its Graviton chips back in 2018.

To be fair, though, Microsoft only announced its Cobalt Arm chips late last year, too, and those chips aren’t yet available to customers, either. But Microsoft Azure has offered instances based on Ampere’s Arm servers since 2022.

In a press briefing ahead of Tuesday’s announcement, Google stressed that since Axion is built on an open foundation, Google Cloud customers will be able to bring their existing Arm workloads to Google Cloud without any modifications. That’s really no surprise. Anything else would’ve been a very dumb move on Google Cloud’s part.

“We recently contributed to the SystemReady Virtual Environment , which is Arm’s hardware and firmware interoperability standard that ensures common operating systems and software packages can run seamlessly in ARM-based systems,” Mark Lohmeyer, Google Cloud’s VP for compute and AI/ML infrastructure, explained. “Through this collaboration, we’re accessing a broad ecosystem of cloud customers who have already deployed ARM-based workloads across hundreds of ISVs and open source projects.”

More later this year.
