All about Paul Skenes, the top baseball prospect making his MLB debut
The newest superstar in Major League Baseball is about to arrive.
On May 8, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced they are calling up top pitching prospect Paul Skenes. The right-hander is expected to start on the mound May 11 at home at PNC Park against their National League Central rival Chicago Cubs at 4 p.m. ET. The MLB Network will carry the game.
Just prior to his start, the Pirates officially added Skenes to their roster .
Skenes, 21, is one of the most heralded and electric prospects in the game, armed with a fastball that has averaged a blistering 99.9 miles per hour in 2024 that has made him one of the biggest storylines in baseball during the first quarter of the season, even though he has yet to play a major league game.
So, just who is this player that the Pirates hope will transform their fortunes and turn them into a perennial contender? Read on to learn about Skenes and his journey to the big leagues.
How did the Pirates wind up with Paul Skenes?
The Pirates, who have not been to a World Series since they last won the Fall Classic in 1979, selected Skenes with the No. 1 pick in the 2023 Major League Baseball draft.
His $9.2 million signing bonus was the largest for a drafted player in Major League Baseball history.
The Pirates, a franchise whose roots date back to 1876 , have only produced two Cy Young Award winners (the award given to the best pitcher in each league) in its history, and Skenes represents the team’s best chance to have a dominant frontline starter since Gerrit Cole, another former No. 1 overall pick (in 2011) who now plays for the New York Yankees.
The Pirates could certainly use an infusion of talent from someone of Skenes' caliber, too. The team has only won five World Series in its existence and hasn't made the playoffs since 2015. They haven't won a playoff game since beating the Cincinnati Reds in the National League wild card in 2013. In short, the Pirates need a boost.
"Selfishly, I was really fired up that I was picked by the Pirates, first pick aside,” Skenes said after he signed with the team , according to MLB.com. “(I) just can’t wait to start the journey."
Where did Paul Skenes go to college?
Born in Fullerton, California, Skenes pitched for Louisiana State University in 2023, guiding the Tigers to the College World Series title.
His numbers there were the stuff of legend: He went 13-2 with a 1.69 ERA, striking out 209 batters in 122 2/3 innings — an astonishing ratio.
His dominance resulted in a slew of awards , as he was named the Division 1 Baseball National Player of the Year, Dick Howser Trophy winner, Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year, College World Series Most Outstanding Player and SEC Pitcher of the Year.
Prior to his time at LSU, Skenes attended the United States Air Force Academy and was a force there. In 2022, he went 10-3 with a 2.73 ERA and 96 strikeouts and also proved to be a menace at the plate , hitting .314 and drilling 13 home runs, making him the only Division I player that season to reach double digits in wins as a pitcher and home runs as a hitter.
He wasn’t the only stud on his 2023 LSU team
Skenes’ teammate at LSU, outfielder Dylan Crews, went No. 2 in the draft, to the Washington Nationals. He’s currently in Double-A and is considered a Top 10 prospect. They became the first teammates to go 1-2 in the history of the draft, which dates back to 1965.
How did Paul Skenes do in the minor leagues?
Skenes rocketed through the minors. In 2024 he played with the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians , sporting a miniscule 0.99 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 27 1/3 innings, failing to give up a run until his fifth start of the season. Indeed, he is a strikeout machine .
After getting drafted, he coasted through three levels of minor league play in 2023, advancing from rookie ball to Double-A. He has started a total of 12 games in his brief minor league career.
He’s dating another star athlete
Skenes is going out with Livvy Dunne, a gymnast and social media superstar who won her own national championship at LSU when the women's gymnastics team won its first title earlier this year.
“You know what, it is still feeling just unreal,” Dunne told TODAY on April 22 after her team won the championship. “I’m still trying to get my voice back from cheering so loud. It was an unforgettable experience, and I’ll probably be thinking about it for the rest of my life.”
Dunne celebrated Skenes’ promotion to the big leagues.
“Here we go! @paulskenes,” she captioned a photo of the Pirates’ announcement on her Instagram story on May 8.
He comes from good pedigree
Skenes attended El Toro High School in Lake Forest, California, which is the alma mater of two current star major league third basemen, Nolan Arenado and Matt Chapman. The school has also produced a long list of other players who made the majors .

Gisele Bündchen Reveals the Real Way to Pronounce Her Name in Resurfaced Clip (You've Been Saying It Wrong)
In 2005, the Brazilian supermodel explained how to properly pronounce her first name during an interview with Conan O'Brien
Remy Steiner/Getty
After decades spent working and living in the United States, Gisele Bündchen has become accustomed to hearing her Portuguese name mispronounced.
The Brazilian star, 43, clarified how her name actually sounds in Portuguese during a 2005 appearance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien .
Bündchen looked back on the earliest years of her modeling career, when she first moved to New York City at just 16 years old. At the time, she was getting by with only a novice-level knowledge of English.
Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.
She ran into the language barrier in her personal and professional life, especially as she was trying to book gigs as an up-and-coming model under her commonly misread name. In her native tongue, it's pronounced Gisele-y, with a long vowel "e" at the end.
In the United States, she explained to O'Brien during their interview, she quickly noticed how English speakers tended to "eat" the last part of her name.
"I’d be like, 'This is not a difficult name!' " she recalled on the late night show. "So I would just write it down, and they'd be like, 'Gisele.' "
Eventually, the mom of two resigned to hearing her name pronounced the "American way," as she dubbed it. To O'Brien, she joked, "Call me whatever you feel like!"
While her name may have taken on its own sound away from home, Bündchen remains in touch with her Brazilian roots. This month, the supermodel spoke up about devastating flooding in her home state of Rio Grande do Sul.
On Instagram, she asked her fans and followers to consider donating to the Luz Alliance Fund , an initiative she launched with the Brazil Foundation. The organization provides humanitarian aid to families in Brazil.
Harold Cunningham/Getty
Her Instagram Reel depicted photos and footage of the flooding damage in southern Brazil, which Bündchen called "the worst tragedy in its history."
"Heavy rains flooded entire towns in most parts of the state. It's not one or two cities; it's more than 350 cities affected. People are not only losing their houses [and] their jobs. They're losing everything. And there are many still to be rescued. Nobody was ready for such devastation," she explained.

Everything to Know About Domhnall Gleeson's Irish Accent, How to Pronounce His Name
Confused about Domhnall Gleeson's name? We've got you covered with a quick pronunciation guide.
We finally have confirmation that a new show set in the world of NBC's The Office is coming , and to sweeten the deal, we already know a few of the show's stars.
How to Watch
Watch every episode of The Office on Peacock .
One of the actors confirmed for the new Peacock original series from The Office creator Greg Daniels is none other than Domhnall Gleeson , a familiar face who's done everything from Harry Potter to Star Wars .
RELATED: Everything to Know About The Office Superfan Extended Cut Episodes
If you pay attention to pop culture, you've no doubt seen Gleeson around over the years, but what you might not know is how exactly to pronounce the actor's name. Now that he's headed to the world of Dunder Miffiln , we thought it might be a good time for a quick guide to Gleeson's heritage and name pronunciation.
Domhnall Gleeson's Irish Roots
Born in Dublin, Gleeson is Irish by birth, a member of an acting family that includes his father, Brendan Gleeson (who you also saw in Harry Potter , not to mention films like Braveheart and The Banshees of Inisherin ), and his brother, Brian Gleeson (whose work includes shows like Peaky Blinders and Frank of Ireland , which he and Domhnall co-created). The Gleeson siblings have worked together, and Domhnall has also worked alongside his father, but unless you've heard him speak in interviews, there's a chance you didn't know Gleeson was Irish.
In many of his most prominent roles, including General Hux in Star Wars and Bill Weasley in Harry Potter , Gleeson is not doing his natural accent. He's often adopted British, American, and other dialects for his roles, so much so that slipping into his natural voice for a part has sometimes proved a challenge.
“The Irish accent, yeah I find it tricky, actually, in a funny sort of a way," Gleeson told Men's Health back in 2020. "I didn't always love doing my own accent. Because doing an accent is an amazing way to study text, like if you're doing an accent, you need to drill those lines into your head so hard it makes you think about what the words mean, and it also puts you in a certain headspace — it changes you.”
How to Pronounce Domhnall Gleeson's Name
With Gleeson's career and roots in mind, you might also still be wondering how exactly he pronounces his own first name. Fortunately, Gleeson himself has offered a handy guide. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly way back in 2015 , the actor explained: "It's Domhnall is how I pronounce my name, which is like 'tonal' but with a D instead of T, and the M is just there to confuse Americans."
RELATED: What Is Everyone's Job at Dunder Mifflin on The Office?
So there you have it. Now, when discussing upcoming projects like his new Peacock series, you can tell all your friends that "Domhnall" is pronounced to rhyme with "tonal."
And speaking of that new series, you won't have long to wait. Set in the same universe as The Office , the new show will follow "a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters."
Production is expected to kick off this summer, which means we'll hopefully know very soon when we can expect the series to premiere. Keep checking NBC Insider for updates on the project.

ESL Classes Offered to BU Dining Services Workers

Recent graduation ceremony celebrated their hard work and commitment
Amy laskowski.
For the last 12 weeks, during the lull between the lunch and dinner shifts at Warren Towers, BU Dining Services employee Kerrine Tang has been working hard to improve her English. Tang, a native Cantonese speaker from Hong Kong and a 16-year Dining Services employee, enrolled in the relatively new BU Center for English Language & Orientation Programs (CELOP) course English for Dining Services.
The program is designed to teach Dining Services employees the essential English language skills they need to do their jobs more efficiently. These skills include writing, vocabulary around cleanliness and sanitation, enhanced communication about allergies and dietary restrictions with customers (i.e., students) and other staff, and understanding written recipes and instructions, as well as a tutorial in the quirks and rules of the English language.
Consider the “th” sound, which exists in virtually no other language, or how certain English nouns (eyeglasses, salmon) are the same whether they are singular or plural. Although English is the most spoken language in the world , it is also considered one of the toughest to learn.
“I took an English class over 20 years ago at my church, but it was all old ladies,” Tang says during a recent break in the class. She wanted to enroll in this class because she knew it could help her better communicate with her manager at Warren Towers. “And my grandchildren,” she says with a smile.
To date, the free twice-a-week program has graduated nearly 50 students in three cohorts—with more eager to start in the fall. There are also talks about creating a second level of the class during future semesters. Dining Services managers, the CELOP team, and perhaps most important, its students, say the program has been a resounding success.
When course instructor Gina Giamei , a CELOP senior lecturer, designed the program last year, she shadowed Dining Services workers to see what language skills they needed. The answer was “everything,” she says: listening skills, speaking, reading, writing, building confidence, and new this semester, a digital literacy component. “I’m cocreating these classes with the students, getting the information from them about what they need,” says Giamei, who has been at CELOP for 18 years and teaching ESL courses for 13 years prior to that. “It’s been a joy to teach them. They are so motivated and so grateful. It makes my job easy.”
It’s been a joy to teach them. They are so motivated and so grateful. It makes my job easy. Gina Giamei
“To learn a language while also working at the same time, as well as managing families and personal lives? It’s really difficult,” says Maria Arruda , CELOP managing director. “Some [students] even have two jobs. It’s an amazing accomplishment.” Arruda says that CELOP would love to offer similar ESL workplace programs to other staff departments at BU in the future.
Increasing confidence
The program’s spring cohort had 18 Dining Services employees, whose native tongues included Spanish, Burmese, Cantonese, French, Haitian Creole, and Amharic. Many of the students, who need their manager’s approval to enroll, say they found out about the program through word-of-mouth.
CELOP’s placement tests are usually digital, but while designing this high beginner–low intermediate level course, Giamei realized many students had issues with digital literacy, so she incorporated some lessons into the classes. These included topics like how to write an email and set up voicemail, using digital menus, and using a translation app on a phone.
She says she’s been impressed with the workers’ dedication (some even asked for extra homework) and their commitment to building community and helping each other. “Their managers have said how they have noticed increased confidence,” says Giamei, beaming. “That was really important to me.”
In one recent class, they talked about shopping, covering topics like when to use the articles “a” or “an,” the difference between the verbs “need” and “want,” and how to use color as an adjective. Giamei says that sometimes students are more challenged by language points (like grammar and pronunciation) in English that vary only slightly in their native tongues. For instance, in Spanish, an adjective usually follows a noun (“a dress blue”), but in English, the adjective comes first (“a blue dress”).
Giamei reads the phrase “a purple skirt” out loud. “Skerrrrrt,” she says, and the class repeats. “That’s better,” she replies.
They then review the differences between “this,” “that,” “these,” and “those.”
“What is that ?” she asks.
“ That is a blue dress,” a student calls out.
“Good!” Giamei says. “He used ‘that’ because it is far away.”
Now, the lesson gets trickier. “What are these?” she says, pointing to pants, a plural noun, although in this case the word refers to only one item. “Aye-aye-aye,” a student responds, and the class laughs. They move on to practicing conversational English—asking and answering questions, handling money, how to talk about receipts.
Pomp and Circumstance
CELOP and Dining Services organized a small graduation ceremony for the employees on May 3 to celebrate the end of the course. The organizers invited students’ families, managers, and supporting staff to attend.
Jon Webster, director of Dining Services, says the ceremony is one of his favorite things his team does during the year. “I think lowering the barrier of communication so that we can all talk to each other is a great way to make friends, and a way to make a great and more productive work environment,” he said at the ceremony. “It’s not necessarily the most comfortable thing to learn a new language. So we’re really celebrating you guys taking the opportunity to do that.”
“We’re delighted this program is here,” says Paul Riel, associate vice president of Auxiliary Services, which oversees Dining Services. “We love the results of this program and like the way that people are able to do their work and get the opportunity to also study,” and take full advantage of the fact that BU is an educational institution.
Mark Yates, food service director at Warren Towers, says he’s seen a “tremendous improvement” in the English skills of his employees who’ve taken the class. “It’s not just a benefit to me as their manager, it has helped them communicate with students. For example, they can answer questions about the menu. They’ve also told me it has helped them feel a lot more comfortable in their daily lives, like at the grocery store.”
Graduate Witney Chow, who is from Myanmar, says she learned about the class from her manager and wanted to sign up to improve her English. Before, she says, “I was nervous, afraid to speak. Now, people can understand me more.”
Classmate Tang volunteered to deliver a short speech at the ceremony and worked with Giamei to help translate it. “This course is a turning point in my life,” Tang said, as she read carefully from a piece of paper in front of the audience. “Now, I dare to speak. I learned English grammar, and I am confident to take further steps to improve my English skills. Thank you for opening doors.”

im glad that dinning services and celop helped the workers learn english, hopefully the program will be offered to dining service workers who wish to continue to learn further english will continue
How wonderful to read about BU’s effort to make learning English available to the staff. It was so exciting to see the confidence in the faces of these graduates after feeling more at home in their environment. CONGRATULATIONS to all for their effort and accomplishment!
This is a terrific service provided by BU! Learning languages late in life can be intimidating, but is possible in a welcoming, caring environment. Congratulations to the students and to the CELOP team for opening this door for our BU co-workers. This should be offered to all BU employees interested in developing their English proficiency.

How to pronounce new Phoenix Suns head coach Mike Budenholzer's last name
OK. Hopefully this clears things up.
With the Phoenix Suns hiring Mike Budenholzer as their new head coach, there seems to be some confusion as to how to pronounce his last name.
Since he's been called 'Coach Bud,' that leads to the U in his name being emphasized that way when saying it.
However, the Suns gave the pronunciation in its news release announcing Budenholzer's hiring Saturday morning.
Budenholzer’s last name is pronounced BOO-den-holz-er .
With him being from Holbrook, it's probably a good idea to learn how to pronounce his last name. Looking forward to seeing who at his introductory press conference asked him to say his last name for clarification.
