Fossil fuels such as hydrocarbons consist of coal, crude oil, fuel oil, and natural gas formed from the carcasses of dead plants and animals. Because all these fuels don't replenish in the short term, taking eons to form, scientists consider them nonrenewable.

Renewable Energy Supplies

Renewable energy comes from sunlight, wind, geothermal, moving water, biomass and biofuels. Environmentalists tout the importance of renewable energy sources because they represent clean energy with a lower impact on nature. Clean energy sources also cost less: The power source is free, and it costs less to install a wind turbine or a solar array than it does to drill for oil. Wind and sun don't disappear with use, as they continually regenerate. Hydroelectric plants on dams and rivers can generate a significant amount of electricity and will continue to do so as long as water continues to flow. Other sources include fuels like ethanol. It comes from plants and the energy of heat generated by wood burning. Inventors and scientists have also found ways to generate power from the force of the waves in the ocean.

Impact and Disappearance of Fossil Fuels

Fossil fuels have a serious impact on the environment as noted by climatologists across the globe. It takes money to extract them from the ground, process them for use and transport them to the end consumer. Fossil fuels add C0 2 and other greenhouse gases to the air during each one of these stages. They also stay trapped in the atmosphere and affect the global climate. Other problems include groundwater contamination from fracking, increased earthquakes in fracked regions, and sinkholes that occur due to oil drilling.

Not everyone benefits from fossil fuel, as it costs more in third world countries than locals can often afford. Assumptions by researchers at Stanford University estimate that in 113 years all the coal will be gone. Natural gas will disappear in 52 years, and crude oil will mostly disappear in 50 years. These assumptions point to the importance of nonrenewable energy sources.

Renewable energy – powering a safer future

Energy is at the heart of the climate challenge – and key to the solution.

A large chunk of the greenhouse gases that blanket the Earth and trap the sun’s heat are generated through energy production, by burning fossil fuels to generate electricity and heat.

Fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gas, are by far the largest contributor to global climate change , accounting for over 75 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 90 percent of all carbon dioxide emissions.

The science is clear: to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, emissions need to be reduced by almost half by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050.

To achieve this, we need to end our reliance on fossil fuels and invest in alternative sources of energy that are clean, accessible, affordable, sustainable, and reliable.

Renewable energy sources – which are available in abundance all around us, provided by the sun, wind, water, waste, and heat from the Earth – are replenished by nature and emit little to no greenhouse gases or pollutants into the air.

Fossil fuels still account for more than 80 percent of global energy production , but cleaner sources of energy are gaining ground. About 29 percent of electricity currently comes from renewable sources.

Here are five reasons why accelerating the transition to clean energy is the pathway to a healthy, livable planet today and for generations to come.

1. Renewable energy sources are all around us

About 80 percent of the global population lives in countries that are net-importers of fossil fuels -- that’s about 6 billion people who are dependent on fossil fuels from other countries, which makes them vulnerable to geopolitical shocks and crises.

In contrast, renewable energy sources are available in all countries, and their potential is yet to be fully harnessed. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) estimates that 90 percent of the world’s electricity can and should come from renewable energy by 2050.

Renewables offer a way out of import dependency, allowing countries to diversify their economies and protect them from the unpredictable price swings of fossil fuels, while driving inclusive economic growth, new jobs, and poverty alleviation.

2. Renewable energy is cheaper

Renewable energy actually is the cheapest power option in most parts of the world today. Prices for renewable energy technologies are dropping rapidly. The cost of electricity from solar power fell by 85 percent between 2010 and 2020. Costs of onshore and offshore wind energy fell by 56 percent and 48 percent respectively.

Falling prices make renewable energy more attractive all around – including to low- and middle-income countries, where most of the additional demand for new electricity will come from. With falling costs, there is a real opportunity for much of the new power supply over the coming years to be provided by low-carbon sources.

Cheap electricity from renewable sources could provide 65 percent of the world’s total electricity supply by 2030. It could decarbonize 90 percent of the power sector by 2050, massively cutting carbon emissions and helping to mitigate climate change.

Although solar and wind power costs are expected to remain higher in 2022 and 2023 then pre-pandemic levels due to general elevated commodity and freight prices, their competitiveness actually improves due to much sharper increases in gas and coal prices, says the International Energy Agency (IEA).

3. Renewable energy is healthier

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 99 percent of people in the world breathe air that exceeds air quality limits and threatens their health, and more than 13 million deaths around the world each year are due to avoidable environmental causes, including air pollution.

The unhealthy levels of fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide originate mainly from the burning of fossil fuels. In 2018, air pollution from fossil fuels caused $2.9 trillion in health and economic costs , about $8 billion a day.

Switching to clean sources of energy, such as wind and solar, thus helps address not only climate change but also air pollution and health.

4. Renewable energy creates jobs

Every dollar of investment in renewables creates three times more jobs than in the fossil fuel industry. The IEA estimates that the transition towards net-zero emissions will lead to an overall increase in energy sector jobs : while about 5 million jobs in fossil fuel production could be lost by 2030, an estimated 14 million new jobs would be created in clean energy, resulting in a net gain of 9 million jobs.

In addition, energy-related industries would require a further 16 million workers, for instance to take on new roles in manufacturing of electric vehicles and hyper-efficient appliances or in innovative technologies such as hydrogen. This means that a total of more than 30 million jobs could be created in clean energy, efficiency, and low-emissions technologies by 2030.

Ensuring a just transition , placing the needs and rights of people at the heart of the energy transition, will be paramount to make sure no one is left behind.

5. Renewable energy makes economic sense

About $7 trillion was spent on subsidizing the fossil fuel industry in 2022, including through explicit subsidies, tax breaks, and health and environmental damages that were not priced into the cost of fossil fuels.

In comparison, about $4 trillion a year needs to be invested in renewable energy until 2030 – including investments in technology and infrastructure – to allow us to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

The upfront cost can be daunting for many countries with limited resources, and many will need financial and technical support to make the transition. But investments in renewable energy will pay off. The reduction of pollution and climate impacts alone could save the world up to $4.2 trillion per year by 2030.

Moreover, efficient, reliable renewable technologies can create a system less prone to market shocks and improve resilience and energy security by diversifying power supply options.

Renewable Energy

Energy is one of the major inputs for the economic development of the country. Any sustainable energy source that comes from the natural environment is a renewable energy source. Renewable energy is inexhaustible and a clean alternative to fossil fuels. In this article, we will learn about the types and sources of renewable energy.

What is Renewable Energy?

Renewable energy is energy that is produced from natural processes and continuously replenished. A few examples of renewable energy are sunlight, water, wind, tides, geothermal heat, and biomass. The energy that is provided by renewable energy resources is used in 5 important areas such as air and water cooling/heating, electricity generation, the rural sector, and transportation.

According to a report in 2016 by REN21, the global energy consumption by the use of renewable energy resources contributed to 19.2% in 2014 and 23.7% in 2015. Many countries have started to invest in these renewable energy resources as these resources will help in maintaining sustainable development. The amount of investment in 2015 was about 286 billion dollars and major sectors were biofuel, solar power, wind, and hydroelectricity.

The existence of renewable energy resources is spread over a wide geographical area in comparison to the conventional energy resources which are often concentrated in a limited number of countries like the oil and gas are mostly concentrated in the Middle East countries. The use of renewable energy resources in energy generation is resulting in less pollution and has a significant effect on economic benefits and energy security.

Examples of Renewable Energy

We can define renewable energy as those energies which can never be depleted. The importance of renewable energy is invaluable. These types of energy sources are different from fossil fuels, such as oil, coal, and natural gas. Some examples of renewable energy sources are:

  • Geothermal energy
  • Biomass energy

Sources of Renewable Energy

The sources could sustain for a longer period of time and can easily be renewed often. Sustainable sources are biomass, nuclear power, geothermal, wind energy, solar power, tidal power, and wave power.

Renewable energy

The sources of renewable energy are known to be less polluting and therefore the whole world is looking forward to new carbon emission norms, where carbon will play a major role in developing new factories and industries. They will be rated according to the carbon emission and the products that they are producing will be rated accordingly.

Types of Renewable Energy

  • Solar Energy:  The radiant light and heat energy from the sun is harnessed with the use of solar collectors. These solar collectors are of various types such as photovoltaics, concentrator photovoltaics, solar heating, (CSP) concentrated solar power, artificial photosynthesis, and solar architecture. This collected solar energy is then used to provide light, heat, and different other forms of electricity.
  • Wind Energy:  The energy we get from winds is known as wind energy. For this, windmills have been used for hundreds of years to pump out water from the ground. We use large tall wind turbines that allow winds to generate electricity. The natural airflow on the surface of the earth is used to run the wind turbines. The modern-day wind turbines range from about 600 Kilowatt to 5 Megawatts, for commercial purposes these are rated with an output power of 1.5 to 3 Megawatts. The most preferred locations for these wind turbines to be installed are the areas which and strong and have constant airflows on offshore and sites that are at high altitudes. The power generated from wind energy in 2015 met 4% of global energy consumption.
  • Hydroelectricity:  According to statistics, hydroelectricity generated around 16.6% of the global energy resources and constituted about 70% of all renewable electricity. This energy is another alternative source of energy that is generated by the construction of dams and reservoirs on the flowing water, the kinetic energy from the flowing water is used to run the turbines which generate electricity. Tidal power converts the energy of tides and Wave power which captures the energy from the surface of the ocean waves for power generation. These two forms of hydropower also have huge potential in electric power generation.
  • Geothermal Energy:  It is the energy that is generated from the thermal energy which is stored in the earth. The heat energy is captured from sources such as hot springs and volcanoes and this heat is directly used by industries for heating the water and other purposes.
  • Biomass Energy:  This type of energy is derived from biomass which is a type of biological material derived from living organisms and plant-derived materials which are called lignocellulosic biomass. Biomass can be directly used via combustion to produce heat and indirectly it can be used to convert to biofuels. Biomass can be converted to other usable forms of energy such as transportation fuels like ethanol, biodiesel, and methane gas.

Energy is the key input in economic growth and there is a close link between the availability of energy and the growth of a nation. Since energy is essential to conduct the process of Production, the process of economic development requires the use of higher levels of energy consumption.

There exists a strong correlation between per Capita gross National Product (GNP) and energy consumption. Higher per capita GNP countries consume more energy per head. For example, per capita energy consumption in USA was 15.5 times and in Japan 8 times that of India.

Importance of Energy :

(1) Easy availability of energy helps in the process of industrializations in a country.

(2) Production of energy leads to the efficient utilization of natural resources. For example solar energy, wind energy and hydro-electricity power can be generated by using sun light, wind and water resources respectively.

(3) Scope of employment opportunities can be possible with the process of industrialization that is possible with easy availability of energy/ power sources.

(4) Easy availability of energy is required for the expansion of infrastructural development in a country.

(5) Income of a country can be raised with the expansion of the power sector. It also help to achieve economic self sufficiency.

Source of Energy :

Broadly speaking there are two main sources of energy in India:

(a) Commercial Energy,

(b) Non-Commercial Energy.

Commercial source of energy or power are sold at a price and the users are required to pay the price. Commercial energy consists of (i) fossil resource energy (like coal, petroleum, natural gas) (ii) hydroelectric energy (iii) atomic energy. Non-commercial energy sources consist of fire-wood, vegetable waste and animal dung. Since the sources are supposed to the free and no price in paid to acquire them, they are called an non-commercial energy sources.

Although recent development indicates some noncommercial sources are charged a price in the urban areas and to some extent in the rural areas also. In India, most of the rural poor people depend on the non-commercial sources of energy. At present, 23% of the energy consumed is obtained from non-commercial sources. Major users of the commercial energy are industry (507o), transport (22%), household (12%), agriculture (9%) and commercial establishment (1%).

Essay # Introduction to Energy Resources in India:

Energy resources are very much important in the context of economic development of the country. With the growing industrialisation, mechanisation of agriculture, and the development of transportation sector, the demand for energy resources is increasing day by day.

Thus a positive correlation exists between economic growth and demand for energy. Moreover, consumption of energy for domestic uses and public lighting has also been increasing.

In India between 1952-53 to 1987-88 the GDP had increased annually at the rate of 3.7 per cent while the energy consumption had increased at the rate of 6.2 per cent per annum. Inspite of this, the per capita consumption of energy in India is low in comparison to that of developed countries. In India, more than half of the population does not possess the capacity to purchase commercial energy.

Again out of the total energy consumed, about half of it is obtained from non-commercial energy. In India the non­commercial sources of energy, mostly used by rural poor, are obtained from firewood, dung cakes and agricultural waste. But the commercial energy is obtained from oil and natural gas, coal, hydro-electricity and a little volume of nuclear energy.

Oil and coal :.

In India the consumption of commercial energy is too much dependent on oil and coal. About 47 per cent of the demand for commercial energy is met through petroleum oil. With the growing oil crisis, the importance of coal has also been realised in the country. Coal has an advantage over other fuels as it can be suitably converted into other types of energy like electricity, oil and gas.

In India, the coal is the principal source of electricity, at present with the significant development of thermal power projects based on coal. About 60 per cent of the total electricity generated in India is available from these coal based thermal power projects. 

Power or electricity is considered as one of the major sources of commercial energy. Power contributed about 28.7 per cent of the total commercial energy consumption of the country in 1987-88. In India, the development of power is progressing at a considerable scale.

If we look at the installed capacity then the total installed generating capacity in India has increased from 2,300 M.W. in 1950 to 2,55,000 MW in 2015 (March).

Essay # The Energy Strategy in India:

Out of this total power generation in India about 60 per cent of it is generated through coal-based thermal power projects. The remaining 40 per cent of electricity is generated through hydro-electricity and atomic energy.

Considering the present power scenario of the country and the present energy crisis, proper steps should be taken for the proper utilisation of huge hydro-power potential of the country, which according to C.E.A. is equivalent to 75,400 M.W., along-with the development of non-conventional energy in the country.

The following elements are incorporated in the new energy strategy of the country:

(i) Accelerated exploitation of domestic conventional energy resources—oil, natural gas, coal, hydro, and nuclear power;

(ii) Proper management of oil demand;

(iii) Substitution of natural gas for oil products;

(iv) Conservation of energy;

(v) Exploitation of renewable sources of energy such as energy forestry and bio-gas, specially for meeting the energy requirements of the rural people; and

(vi) Intensify research and development on the emerging energy technologies.

In India, the shortage of energy is presently working as a major constraint of the industrial development. In view of the serious oil crisis faced at present due to soaring oil price, steps be taken for sustained increase in the production of coal.

Hydro-power potential should also be developed with a sense of urgency. Nuclear power, which is at present contributing a little more than 2 per cent of the total power generated, will have to be exploited with great vigour and urgency.

Moreover, in order to supplement the commercial energy produced in the country through the development of non-conventional energy, the Seventh Plan puts emphasis on “The development and accelerated utilisation of renewable energy sources wherever they are technically and economically viable, to improve the access to and availability of, renewable decentralised energy sources, particularly for the rural population and to reduce environment degradation resulting from deforestation.”

In order to realise these above mentioned objectives, the following efforts should be undertaken:

1. A large number of demonstration projects should be undertaken to popularise these new and renewable sources of non-conventional energy like wind, solar, bio-gas and bio-mass.

2. For developing indigenous technologies in this connection, the Government should support intensive R&D (Research and Development).

3. Attempts have to be made to create demand for this system through government intervention along with appropriate financial incentives as the initial cost of this system of renewable energy is very high.

4. An appropriate infrastructure for manufacturing, installation and servicing of this renewable energy system should be developed for its proper utilisation.

5. A large scale awareness programme should be undertaken to educate the people about the new technologies developed for the efficient utilisation of this system.

6. Lastly, substitution of non-commercial energy sources by commercial fuels should be discouraged and for that energy forestry should be developed.

Essay # Energy Scenario in India:

It is important to look at the present energy scenario of the country vis-a-vis other countries.

Latest finding from the Emerging Economy Report prepared by research and consultancy firm, Center for Knowledge Societies (CKS) shows that emerging economies could play pivotal roles in reducing the growing environmental anxieties worldwide. The report shows that most emerging economies remain for below the energy consumption as well as carbon emission levels of industrialised countries.

India’s per capita energy consumption of 12.6 million BTU and Indonesia’s (21.5) are almost negligible when compared to more economically developed nations like South Korea (170.2 m BTU per capita) and Taiwan (181.5 m BTU).

China’s carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emission of 2.6 thousand metric tonnes per 1000 people is far below the 10.16 thousand metric tonnes per 1000 people in Germany.

The report has also identified several new energy paradigms that can fundamentally alter the ways in which end consumers access and use energy. Therefore, the new paradigm can dramatically change the adverse environmental effects of increased energy demand in the emerging economies.

The report highlighted that energy scarcity can lead to energy efficiency. To some extent the outstanding and latent demand for energy of most emerging economies, which is never met, can contribute to energy efficiency, at least in economic terms.

It is to the credit of India’s growth process that its energy intensity has fallen over time. In comparison to the rest of the world, particularly the emerging economies of Brazil and China, the use of energy per capita in India remained moderate and it increased at a slower pace.

Table 5.3 will clarify its position.

Energy Use for Selected Countries

Table 5.3 reveals that total use of energy in India was 362 MMTOE in 1990 and then increased to 573 MMTOE in 2004 as compared to that of 1609 MMTOE for China, 205 MMTOE for Brazil, 1245 MMTOE for EMU and 2326 MMTOE for USA. The growth in the use of energy during the period 1990-2004 was 3.3 per cent in India as compared to that of 3.6 per cent in China, 3.2 per cent in Brazil and 1.4 per cent in USA.

However, the energy use per capita (KGOE) in India was 426 KGOE in 1990 increased to 531 KGOE in 2004 as compared to that of 1242 KGOE in China, 1114 KGOE for Brazil, 3906 KGOE for UK, 3990 for EMU and 7921 KGOE in the USA. Considering the huge size of population, the use of energy per capita in India is found to be moderate and its pace in also comparatively slower.

This could partly due to unsatisfied demand arising due to domestic capacity constraints. A large section of India’s population is still not in a position to buy and use any commercial sources of energy due to their poor economic capacity. Major portion of these energy resources are being used by a small section of rich and middle class people of the country.

Thus economic empowerment of this large section of poor people will lead to a huge demand for energy in near future leading to a serious energy crisis in our country. There is also enough evidence of wastage in use of scarce energy resources by the richer and middle class people of the country.

Sudden spurt in the use of private vehicles by these sections of population and the faulty vehicle policy pursued by the Government may lead to a serious energy crisis in near future in the context of shrinking national as well as global reserve of energy.

There is considerable room to improve energy efficiency, especially of motor vehicles and in the generation, transmission and end-use of electricity, commercially viable and economic attractive technology options in use in the developed world, should be considered and adopted.

Finally, wastage in the use of energy, especially in respect of petroleum and electricity needs to be immediately controlled both by pursuing the policy of imposition and awareness for attaining curtailment in consumption in the use of energy resources.

Thus under the present scenario of energy crisis, improving energy efficiency and demand side management measures like encouraging urban mass transport are quite important. Sustaining economic growth is critically dependant on significant supply augmentation and change in the composition of energy use.

Import dependence, for meeting the primary energy demand in the country, has been increasing over a long period since 1990-91 to 2006-07. In order to reduce incremental import dependence of country’s energy requirement in the medium term to long term entails a number of measures.

These include:

(a) Tapping India’s coal reserve with appropriate technology and reforms in the coal sector to increase competition

(b) Mitigating transportation constraints on availability of coal;

(c) Accelerating exploration of oil and gas within the country;

(d) Fully exploiting the nuclear and hydro-potential for power generation; and

(e) Expediting programmes for energy generation through renewable and non-conventional sources. Besides, a steps up of domestic production, the remaining deficit would have to be bridged by entering into strategic geo-political alliances to access the energy assets in the region. There is also a need for regulatory reform to implement open access in power sector to facilitate competition.

Finally, putting a curb on wasteful use of energy, especially in respect of petroleum and electricity is the urgent need of the hour. This needs to be attained by pursuing a rational policy of imposition and awareness for attaining the required curtailment in consumption in use of energy resources and also for pursuing a policy for conservation of energy in real and rational manner.

All the things we need to survive , such as food , water, air, and shelter , come from natural resources. Some of these resources, like small plants, can be replaced quickly after they are used. Others, like large trees, take a long time to replace. These are renewable resources . Other resources, such as fossil fuels , cannot be replaced at all. Once they are used up, they are gone f orever . These are nonrenewable resources . People often waste natural resources. Animals are overhunted . Forests are cleared, exposing land to wind and water damage. Fertile soil is exhausted and lost to erosion because of poor farming practices. Fuel supplies are depleted . Water and air are polluted . If resources are carelessly managed, many will be used up. If used wisely and efficiently , however, renewable resources will last much longer. Through conservation, people can reduce waste and manage natural resources wisely. The population of human beings has grown enormously in the past two centuries. Billions of people use up resources quickly as they eat food, build houses, produce goods, and burn fuel for transportation and electricity . The continuation of life as we know it depends on the careful use of natural resources. The need to conserve resources often conflicts with other needs. For some people, a wooded area may be a good place to put a farm. A timber company may want to harvest the area’s trees for construction materials. A business may want to build a factory or shopping mall on the land. All these needs are valid, but sometimes the plants and animals that live in the area are forgotten. The benefits of development need to be weighed against the harm to animals that may be forced to find new habitats , the depletion of resources we may want in the future (such as water or timber), or damage to resources we use today. Development and conservation can coexist in harmony. When we use the environment in ways that ensure we have resources for the future, it is called sustainable development . There are many different resources we need to conserve in order to live sustainably. Forests A forest is a large area covered with trees grouped so their foliage shades the ground. Every continent except Antarctica has forests, from the evergreen -filled boreal forests of the north to mangrove forests in tropical wetlands . Forests are home to more than two-thirds of all known land species . Tropical rainforests are especially rich in biodiversity . Forests provide habitats for animals and plants. They store carbon , helping reduce global warming . They protect soil by reducing runoff . They add nutrients to the soil through leaf litter . They provide people with lumber and firewood. Deforestation is the process of clearing away forests by cutting them down or burning them. People clear forests to use the wood, or to make way for farming or development. Each year, Earth loses about 14.6 million hectares (36 million acres) of forest to deforestation—an area about the size of the U.S. state of New York. Deforestation destroys wildlife habitats and increases soil erosion. It also releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere , contributing to global warming. Deforestation accounts for 15 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Deforestation also harms the people who rely on forests for their survival, hunting and gathering, harvesting forest products, or using the timber for firewood. About half of all the forests on Earth are in the tropics —an area that circles the globe near the Equator . Although tropical forests cover fewer than 6 percent of the world’s land area, they are home to about 80 percent of the world’s documented species. For example, more than 500 different species of trees live in the forests on the small U.S. island of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Sea. Tropical forests give us many valuable products, including woods like mahogany and teak , rubber , fruits, nuts, and flowers. Many of the medicines we use today come from plants found only in tropical rainforests. These include quinine , a malaria drug; curare , an anesthetic used in surgery; and rosy periwinkle , which is used to treat certain types of cancer . Sustainable forestry practices are critical for ensuring we have these resources well into the future. One of these practices is leaving some trees to die and decay naturally in the forest. This “ deadwood ” builds up soil. Other sustainable forestry methods include using low-impact logging practices, harvesting with natural regeneration in mind, and avoiding certain logging techniques , such as removing all the high-value trees or all the largest trees from a forest. Trees can also be conserved if consumers recycle . People in China and Mexico, for example, reuse much of their wastepaper, including writing paper, wrapping paper, and cardboard. If half the world’s paper were recycled, much of the worldwide demand for new paper would be fulfilled, saving many of Earth’s trees. We can also replace some wood products with alternatives like bamboo , which is actually a type of grass. Soil Soil is vital to food production. We need high-quality soil to grow the crops that we eat and feed to livestock . Soil is also important to plants that grow in the wild. Many other types of conservation efforts, such as plant conservation and animal conservation, depend on soil conservation. Poor farming methods, such as repeatedly planting the same crop in the same place, called monoculture , deplete nutrients in the soil. Soil erosion by water and wind increases when farmers plow up and down hills. One soil conservation method is called contour strip cropping . Several crops, such as corn, wheat, and clover , are planted in alternating strips across a slope or across the path of the prevailing wind . Different crops, with different root systems and leaves, help slow erosion.

Harvesting all the trees from a large area, a practice called clearcutting , increases the chances of losing productive topsoil to wind and water erosion. Selective harvesting —the practice of removing individual trees or small groups of trees—leaves other trees standing to anchor the soil. Biodiversity Biodiversity is the variety of living things that populate Earth. The products and benefits we get from nature rely on biodiversity. We need a rich mixture of living things to provide foods, building materials, and medicines, as well as to maintain a clean and healthy landscape . When a species becomes extinct , it is lost to the world forever. Scientists estimate that the current rate of extinction is 1,000 times the natural rate. Through hunting, pollution , habitat destruction, and contribution to global warming, people are speeding up the loss of biodiversity at an alarming rate. It’s hard to know how many species are going extinct because the total number of species is unknown. Scientists discover thousands of new species every year. For example, after looking at just 19 trees in Panama, scientists found 1,200 different species of beetles—80 percent of them unknown to science at the time. Based on various estimates of the number of species on Earth, we could be losing anywhere from 200 to 100,000 species each year. We need to protect biodiversity to ensure we have plentiful and varied food sources. This is true even if we don’t eat a species threatened with extinction because something we do eat may depend on that species for survival. Some predators are useful for keeping the populations of other animals at manageable levels. The extinction of a major predator might mean there are more herbivores looking for food in people’s gardens and farms. Biodiversity is important for more than just food. For instance, we use between 50,000 to 70,000 plant species for medicines worldwide. The Great Barrier Reef , a coral reef off the coast of northeastern Australia, contributes about $6 billion to the nation’s economy through commercial fishing , tourism , and other recreational activities. If the coral reef dies, many of the fish, shellfish , marine mammals , and plants will die, too. Some governments have established parks and preserves to protect wildlife and their habitats. They are also working to abolish hunting and fishing practices that may cause the extinction of some species. Fossil Fuels Fossil fuels are fuels produced from the remains of ancient plants and animals. They include coal , petroleum (oil), and natural gas . People rely on fossil fuels to power vehicles like cars and airplanes, to produce electricity, and to cook and provide heat. In addition, many of the products we use today are made from petroleum. These include plastics , synthetic rubber, fabrics like nylon , medicines, cosmetics , waxes, cleaning products, medical devices, and even bubblegum.

Fossil fuels formed over millions of years. Once we use them up, we cannot replace them. Fossil fuels are a nonrenewable resource. We need to conserve fossil fuels so we don’t run out. However, there are other good reasons to limit our fossil fuel use. These fuels pollute the air when they are burned. Burning fossil fuels also releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming. Global warming is changing ecosystems . The oceans are becoming warmer and more acidic , which threatens sea life. Sea levels are rising, posing risks to coastal communities. Many areas are experiencing more droughts , while others suffer from flooding . Scientists are exploring alternatives to fossil fuels. They are trying to produce renewable biofuels to power cars and trucks. They are looking to produce electricity using the sun, wind, water, and geothermal energy — Earth’s natural heat. Everyone can help conserve fossil fuels by using them carefully. Turn off lights and other electronics when you are not using them. Purchase energy-efficient appliances and weatherproof your home. Walk, ride a bike, carpool , and use public transportation whenever possible. Minerals Earth’s supply of raw mineral resources is in danger. Many mineral deposits that have been located and mapped have been depleted. As the ores for minerals like aluminum and iron become harder to find and extract , their prices skyrocket . This makes tools and machinery more expensive to purchase and operate. Many mining methods, such as mountaintop removal mining (MTR) , devastate the environment. They destroy soil, plants, and animal habitats. Many mining methods also pollute water and air, as toxic chemicals leak into the surrounding ecosystem. Conservation efforts in areas like Chile and the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern United States often promote more sustainable mining methods. Less wasteful mining methods and the recycling of materials will help conserve mineral resources. In Japan, for example, car manufacturers recycle many raw materials used in making automobiles. In the United States, nearly one-third of the iron produced comes from recycled automobiles. Electronic devices present a big problem for conservation because technology changes so quickly. For example, consumers typically replace their cell phones every 18 months. Computers, televisions, and mp3 players are other products contributing to “ e-waste .” The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that Americans generated more than three million tons of e-waste in 2007. Electronic products contain minerals as well as petroleum-based plastics. Many of them also contain hazardous materials that can leach out of landfills into the soil and water supply. Many governments are passing laws requiring manufacturers to recycle used electronics. Recycling not only keeps materials out of landfills, but it also reduces the energy used to produce new products. For instance, recycling aluminum saves 90 percent of the energy that would be required to mine new aluminum.

Water Water is a renewable resource. We will not run out of water the way we might run out of fossil fuels. The amount of water on Earth always remains the same. However, most of the planet’s water is unavailable for human use. While more than 70 percent of Earth’s surface is covered by water, only 2.5 percent of it is freshwater . Out of that freshwater, almost 70 percent is permanently frozen in the ice caps covering Antarctica and Greenland. Only about 1 percent of the freshwater on Earth is available for people to use for drinking, bathing, and irrigating crops. People in many regions of the world suffer water shortages . These are caused by depletion of underground water sources known as aquifers , a lack of rainfall due to drought, or pollution of water supplies. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 2.6 billion people lack adequate water sanitation . More than five million people die each year from diseases caused by using polluted water for drinking, cooking, or washing. About one-third of Earth’s population lives in areas that are experiencing water stress . Most of these areas are in developing countries. Polluted water hurts the environment as well as people. For instance, agricultural runoff—the water that runs off of farmland—can contain fertilizers and pesticides . When this water gets into streams , rivers , and oceans, it can harm the organisms that live in or drink from those water sources. People can conserve and protect water supplies in many ways. Individuals can limit water use by fixing leaky faucets, taking shorter showers, planting drought-resistant plants, and buying low-water-use appliances. Governments, businesses, and nonprofit organizations can help developing countries build sanitation facilities. Farmers can change some of their practices to reduce polluted runoff. This includes limiting overgrazing , avoiding over-irrigation, and using alternatives to chemical pesticides whenever possible. Conservation Groups Businesses, international organizations , and some governments are involved in conservation efforts. The United Nations (UN) encourages the creation of national parks around the world. The UN also established World Water Day, an event to raise awareness and promote water conservation. Governments enact laws defining how land should be used and which areas should be set aside as parks and wildlife preserves. Governments also enforce laws designed to protect the environment from pollution, such as requiring factories to install pollution-control devices. Finally, governments often provide incentives for conserving resources, using clean technologies, and recycling used goods. Many international organizations are dedicated to conservation. Members support causes such as saving rain forests, protecting threatened animals, and cleaning up the air. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is an alliance of governments and private groups founded in 1948. The IUCN works to protect wildlife and habitats. In 1980, the group proposed a world conservation strategy . Many governments have used the IUCN model to develop their own conservation plans. In addition, the IUCN monitors the status of endangered wildlife, threatened national parks and preserves, and other environments around the world. Zoos and botanical gardens also work to protect wildlife. Many zoos raise and breed endangered animals to increase their populations. They conduct research and help educate the public about endangered species . For instance, the San Diego Zoo in the U.S. state of California runs a variety of research programs on topics ranging from disease control in amphibians to heart-healthy diets for gorillas. Scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in London, England, work to protect plant life around the world. Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank , for example, works with partners in 54 countries to protect biodiversity through seed collection. Kew researchers are also exploring how DNA technology can help restore damaged habitats. Individuals can do many things to help conserve resources. Turning off lights, repairing leaky faucets, and recycling paper, aluminum cans, glass, and plastic are just a few examples. Riding bikes, walking, carpooling, and using public transportation all help conserve fuel and reduce the amount of pollutants released into the environment. Individuals can plant trees to create homes for birds and squirrels. At grocery stores, people can bring their own reusable bags. And people can carry reusable water bottles and coffee mugs rather than using disposable containers. If each of us would conserve in small ways, the result would be a major conservation effort.

Tree Huggers The Chipko Movement, which is dedicated to saving trees, was started by villagers in Uttar Pradesh, India. Chipko means hold fast or embrace. The villagers flung their arms around trees to keep loggers from cutting them down. The villagers won, and Uttar Pradesh banned the felling of trees in the Himalayan foothills. The movement has since expanded to other parts of India.

What are Natural Resources?

Natural Resources are resources which are present in nature independent of human actions. 

These are the resources that are created naturally by the environment, without any help from humans. Soil, stone, sunlight, air, plants, animals, fossil fuels, etc. are all natural resources.

In simple language, natural resources are naturally occurring materials which are useful to humankind. They can also be useful in a variety of ways such as in technological, economic or social contexts. These resources include building, clothing materials, food, water, fertilisers and geothermal energy. Natural resources were traditionally within the purview of the natural sciences.

Types of Natural Resources

The buildings that provide our homes, offices, schools, restaurants, and other services use a lot of energy. In fact, homes and commercial buildings consume  75% of all electricity in the United States and 40% of our total energy .

The Loan Programs Office (LPO) can be a financing resource for projects that will make a significant impact on building energy consumption—particularly where projects are seeking to achieve important policy frameworks, such as compliance with state or local Building Performance Standards (BPS) laws.

LPO also has important limitations and requirements that governmental partners and project companies should consider carefully. 

How LPO Can Help

LPO can finance projects that utilize an eligible technology as set forth in Section 1703(b) of the Title 17 Clean Energy Financing Program . Relevant technologies might include renewable energy systems, efficient end-use energy technologies, and energy storage technologies.

For these projects, LPO will most likely be used to support energy work on a large portfolio of buildings, rather than a single building or several buildings. That is due to a variety of factors, including:

  • The more limited scope of eligible costs that LPO can finance relative to the scope of some building projects.
  • The requirement that LPO debt must be senior and cannot be subordinated to any other debt on a project, despite having a more limited scope.
  • Costs of due diligence during the LPO application process, which typically run to several million dollars, as well as pricing.  
  • To expand on the question of scope, LPO might finance the installation of efficient appliances, solar, storage, and charging infrastructure on a portfolio of buildings. Each of those elements will have construction costs, for example, some of which may be eligible to be included in the costs that LPO would finance. 

Nevertheless, LPO has limitations on what can be considered an eligible cost. On a project that seeks to install solar and storage, for example, it is likely that LPO could not finance roof repair or replacement.

In these applications , LPO will consider the applicant’s Independent Engineering report for evidence of how various costs are necessary to meet the policy and regulatory framework as well as to support the functioning of the technology—costs that are "necessary, reasonable, customary and directly related" (10 CFR 609.10(a)) to an eligible project.

Some projects include costs that are eligible for LPO support and other costs that are not. LPO can potentially offer a partial guarantee of a commercial loan that covers both categories of costs, provided that the guarantee is limited to the amount of costs that are eligible for LPO support.

It is also worth noting that LPO loan guarantees can potentially be collateralized by income from service contracts rather than hard assets. 

Federal Requirements

There are a variety of federal requirements that attach to all projects financed by LPO. Examples include the Davis-Bacon Act , National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and Cargo Preference Act ; for nonprofit and government borrowers, the Build America, Buy America Act applies.

The environmental impact of all projects will be reviewed for NEPA compliance. Projects that involve minor modifications on existing buildings, however, may qualify for a categorical exclusion. Building additions and new construction typically require at least an environmental assessment. LPO will review Part II applications submissions and work with the applicant to determine the level of NEPA review for each project before entering due diligence.

Another important point to consider is that projects cannot benefit directly or indirectly from other federally appropriated funds. A grant from DOE or another federal agency, for example, cannot be part of the project finances. Tax credits that the project is otherwise eligible for, however, are allowable.

ARPA-E Announces Innovation Agreement Outlining Vision for the Future of Electrified Airports at Technology Expo Hosted in San Antonio

Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), the City of San Antonio Aviation Department and City Public Service Board (CPS Energy), and the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) outlining collective efforts to develop and promote technologies that include, but are not limited to, sustainable aviation, battery technologies and innovative battery storage solutions, enhanced electric vehicle (EV) charging, and power demand management technologies. This agreement marks the first time an international airport will work together with ARPA-E—DOE’s innovation arm—to accelerate the development and deployment of new energy technologies to decarbonize the aviation sector. ARPA-E Director Evelyn Wang, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, UTSA President Dr. Taylor Eighmy, and CPS Energy Vice President of Customer Value Karma Nilsson were all present for the signing hosted at Stinson Municipal Airport in San Antonio. “We are excited at this opportunity to collaborate and showcase innovative energy technologies that could transform the future of aviation,” said ARPA-E Director Evelyn N. Wang. “Today’s MOU signing is a step in the right direction to ensuring that these innovative technologies are developed, built, and integrated in America. Our hope is that this partnership will lay the groundwork to enable future electrified airports.” “We are proud to be a part of this innovative initiative that will ultimately benefit the San Antonio community,” said Rudy D. Garza, President and CEO of CPS Energy. “CPS Energy continues to look for ways to participate in electrification projects, especially for critical public infrastructure like the San Antonio International Airport. Projects like these furthers our commitment to finding new and sustainable technologies to enable our growing community and we are excited about the opportunity to work with our community partners to do so.” “This is an important agreement with the potential to shape the aviation industry of the future,” said San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg.  “Researching the decarbonization of aviation and finding new sustainable energy models is important work, and I am proud San Antonio will be playing a leading role in this cutting-edge research.” “This is a unique partnership designed to promote transformative energy technologies and it propels the City of San Antonio’s Aviation Department to the center of innovation,” said Jesus Saenz, Director of Airports, City of San Antonio Aviation Department. “This is an exciting time to be part of the Aviation Team and planning for the future of aviation and our airports.” “This collaborative effort is an incredible opportunity for UTSA to partner with strategic industry leaders in evaluating electric aircraft, advanced energy storage and micro-grid systems to advance the adoption of sustainable multi-modal transportation technologies,” said UTSA President Taylor Eighmy. “Together, this collective will accelerate discoveries that will positively impact the local and regional economies while advancing technologies that change the world.”

To mark this historic milestone, the following ARPA-E-funded project teams were also present to showcase their technologies and share how their innovations could be integrated into future electrified airports:

  • Ampaire , who is setting new standards for sustainable air travel and eco-friendly transportation solutions, flew its cutting-edge hybrid electric EEL aircraft and  watch video of the aircraft here ;
  • Imagen Energy showcased ultrafast, compact electric vehicle chargers delivering efficient and cost-effective power solutions;
  • Natron Energy featured sodium-ion batteries that can safely store energy and efficiently deliver power on demand;
  • AutoGrid discussed a distributed energy resource management system that can help grid operators manage energy supply and demand fluctuations; 
  • Quidnet Energy brought a wellhead to illustrate a modular geomechanical pumped storage systems that can utilize existing natural resources to store renewable energy over long durations; and
  • Texas A&M University Research Team  presented 3D-printed models of a motor and shared concepts for advancing efficiency in electric transportation. 

UTSA and CPS Energy also presented research to leverage a city-scale grid digital twin to evaluate operational efficacy, ensure seamless interoperability, fortify cybersecurity protocols, and assess performance metrics of electric/hybrid aircrafts.

The MOU signed today will enable collaboration to identify research, development, demonstration, and deployment opportunities that will promote sustainable aviation technologies.
