What is an m.tech ph.d degree.

M.Tech Ph.D is an integrated dual degree academic programme that combines two progressive degree courses postgraduate level M.Tech. and doctoral degree Ph.D. M.Tech is the abbreviated name of Master of Technology. Candidates Who have completed 10+2+4 level of technical education such as B.E., B.Arch. and B.Tech. are eligible for enrolling in M.Tech. Ph.D stands for Doctor of Philosophy, it is a higher level degree programme that can be pursued after completion of 10+2+3+2 or 10+2+4 level of academic programmes.

In integrated M.Tech. Ph.D. course, M.Tech programme consists of four-semesters and Ph.D. programme after the completion of the M.Tech programme subject to the minimum grade required. The programme is designed to give in-depth display and hands-on Research and development experience to the applicants in the respective areas.

What is M.Tech. Ph.D. full form?

M.Tech. Ph.D stands for Master of Technology Doctor of Philosophy. M.Tech. Ph.D. is an integrated dual degree. M.Tech. Ph.D. is an integrated course of Master of Technology with Doctorate of Philosophy designed for students with scientific vigour for research and theoretical knowledge. It can be pursued after completing B.Tech . M.Tech is a postgraduate engineering degree programme awarded to applicants after fulfilment of two years of education in the engineering field. This degree signifies a specific branch of engineering , Whereas Ph.D. is a doctoral degree with an educational focus. It is usually a three-year duration programme, and aspirants need to accomplish the course within a maximum of five to six years. Although, the course term may differ from one institute to the other.

Engineering Graduates under the 10+2+4 system are qualified to apply. A minimum of 6 point CGPA or 60 per cent is eligible to apply for the course For reserved category; change may vary in the percentage.

The Age limit should not be more than 28 years. As per govt rules age limit can vary for the reserved category students.

A valid GATE score will be an advantage.

Professional Society Examinations (similar to BE / B.Tech/ B.Arch .) approved by MHRD/UPSC/AICTE

Top M.Tech Ph.D Entrance Examinations

CSIR-UGC NET: CSIR UGC NET stands for Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Union Grants Commission National Eligibility Test. It is a national level examination conducted by NTA. It is conducted twice a year in online mode only. The examination is conducted to select eligible candidates for Junior Research Fellowship and provide them appointment as lecturers in universities and colleges in India.

GATE: GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. It is organised by IIT Kharagpur. Those who want to take the examination are required to check for notifications and send applications through the official website of the IIT Kharagpur. It is conducted for providing admissions in postgraduate level engineering and architectural programmes.

JEST: JEST stands for Joint Entrance Screening Test. The organising body of JEST is the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. It is conducted to provide admissions in PhD or integrated PhD programmes in physics, theoretical computer science, computational biology or neuroscience. It is recognised by the Science and Engineering Research Board as the National Eligibility Test (NET).

GPAT: GPAT stands for Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test. It is a national level entrance examination conducted to provide admissions in M.Pharm. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency. The duration of the examination is three hours. The examination is conducted in online mode.

The other entrance examinations are DBT JRF and NBHM Screening Test.

M.Tech. Ph.D. Cut off

A cut-off is the minimum eligibility criteria set by academic authorities to provide admissions in colleges to eligible candidates who apply for enrolment in academic courses based on their performance in the previously passing examination or in the entrance examination. Those who score more or equivalent to the announced cut off are eligible for further enrolling in the academic programme by completing the further steps involved in the admission process.

M.Tech Ph.D Course Structure

M.Tech PhD is a two+three years full-time course divided into two parts. During the first three academic years, students must complete:

Ten lecture courses where each course lasts one semester.

A short course

A laboratory rotation course

Two short research projects

An extended research project

Research Methodology course programme ( This course programme is assessed with a Pass or Fail basis)

The research projects( Project A and Project B) last for seven-eight weeks. The two projects are carried out during the second semester of the first year. Both projects are done under different administrators. During the third semester, students start with the second project(Project C). The project must be completed by the third semester.

M.Tech. P.hD. students will receive course credits associated with the course structure. The credits may vary from one institution to another. However, the details of the credit for most institutions are as follows:

Credit for the ten lecture courses (40 credits)

Credit for the one short course (2 credits)

Credit for Lab rotation course (10 credits)

Credit for projects- project A and Projects B (24 credits)

Credit for M.Tech Project (24 credits)

The overall credit validation is calculated for 100 credit marks.

Hence, by completing these courses and the projects during the academic year and achieving 75 credits, excluding the M.Tech project credits, students are considered eligible to register for the Doctoral programme.

The M.Tech project starts during the second semester of the second academic year. The M.tech Research project is a full-time research project. The M.Tech research project can either be a continuation of the short-term projects- Project A, Project B, or can be a completely new project.

• Integrated M.Tech (Computer Science and Engineering)

IIIT-Bangalore introduced a 5-year Integrated M.Tech. (iMTech) programme in the year 2012. This programme intended for students who have completed or are completing Plus Two (or equivalent). At the end of five years of the programme, successful students receive dual degrees of B.Tech and M.Tech.

The iMTech CSE is a ten-semester programme where the first eight semesters constitute academic coursework. During the ninth semester, a student is expected to work on a project at the Institute or take advanced courses that will help students pursue higher studies. In the tenth semester, the student may opt for a thesis or internship in a well-recognized organization.

The courses in iMTech CSE cover a wide range of core topics, including algorithms, automata theory, discrete maths, Computer Architecture, Digital Design, Computer Networking, Operating Systems, and current technology topics such as Artificial intelligence, Machine learning, Approximate algorithms, Software-defined network, Real-time operating systems, and many others. The CSE curriculum also includes a mix of General courses such as English, Technical communication, Economics, and others. Students also study 3 courses on applied Maths, and a course on Engineering physics to have a strong understanding of science and engineering. At the end of the five years, students are expected to specialize in more than one stream, namely: AIML (Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning), TSCD (Theory and Systems for Computing and Data), NC (Networking and Communication), VLSI (VLSI Systems), and DT (Digital Society). iMTech CSE students are placed in high-profile jobs including Google, Amazon, Flipkart, and others. On the research side, students have secured Ph.D. offers from Harvard, Cornell, and many other universities in the past. Application for Integrated M.Tech./Ph.D. (Tech.) at ARIES [2024]

Integrated M.Tech-Ph.D (Tech.) Programme

We have initiated the Integrated M.Tech. - Ph.D. (Tech.) programme in Astronomical Instrumentation in collaboration with the Department of Applied Optics and Photonics, University of Calcutta (CU) at ARIES. The degree will be awarded by the University of Calcutta. The duration of M.Tech. coursework will be of 2 years divided into 4 semesters. After successful completion of the M.Tech. course, a student can opt for registration in Ph.D. (Tech.) programme, subjected to a selection procedure and minimum cut-off grade.

Programme Description

Application process for admission in the integrated m.tech. - ph.d. programme (2024).

Selection to this programme will be through an in-person interview at ARIES, Nainital .

Minimum qualification:

• M.Sc./BE/B.Tech. with a minimum 55% marks for General/OBC and 50% for SC/ST. Post graduation degree should be from a UGC recognized college/University.
• The candidate should have passed M.Sc/BE/B.Tech. on or after 2022. Students who are appearing in M.Sc./BE/B.Tech. final year exam can appear before the interview, but, if selected have to furnish proof of M.Sc./BE/B.Tech qualification at the time of joining.
• Age limit: 28 years as on July 1, 2024 (date of birth on or after July 1, 1996). The upper age limit for reserved categories may be relaxed per the UGC rules.
• Applicants should have CSIR/UGC-NET (JRF/LS) qualified in Physics / Electronic Science / Applied Mathematics / Applied Physics (2022/23) - OR - GATE valid till 2024 qualified.

M.Tech.-Ph.D. Dual Degree CSE & M.Tech.-Ph.D. Dual Degree AI

IIT Jodhpur has been offering MTech-PhD dual-degree programs since July 2019. These programs have been designed particularly for students with an inclination for research. Students who have completed their B.Tech. are eligible to join this program. Students complete their M.Tech. course work and then start their research, and earn both M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees - at the end of the program. There are two distinct aspects of these programs: first, it provides an avenue for students to earn both degrees in a far lesser duration compared to if these were done individually, and second, students are awarded a fellowship equivalent to that of a JRF from the date of their joining. Academically, these programs facilitate students to decide upon their area of research by the end of the first semester. After a phase of rigorous coursework in the first two years, they start working towards the academic requirements of a PhD that includes a comprehensive exam, state-of-the-art seminar, publications in top conferences and journals, and a thesis. The students can also work on industry projects and collaborate with faculty from other academic/research bodies. This program offers the benefit of PhD level scholarship from the first year itself and the integrated courses and research helps in reducing the overall time of completing MTech and PhD.

The Department of CSE is currently offering two such programs: MTech-PhD Dual-degree in CSE and MTech-PhD Dual-degree in AI, and is continuously looking for motivated and capable students to conduct advanced research in all areas of Computer Science and AI (please visit the " Research " page for more details). The coursework requirements of these programs are similar to the corresponding MTech programs, and other support (travel support, institute mobility grant, fellowship schemes in addition to that from the Ministry of Education, etc.) and research related academic requirements are similar to the PhD program.

The Ph.D. program at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at IIT Jodhpur is postgraduate-research-oriented. A Ph.D. student works in an area of his/her interest under the supervision of a faculty member(s) and also has the flexibility to have an industry expert as co-supervisor. The student has to complete the Ph.D. qualifier requirements, which involve a minimum number of credits by taking courses, a comprehensive exam, state-of-the-art seminar, and research proposal defense. The doctoral program’s salient feature is the independent research work taken by scholars, leading to a thesis at the end of the program. The average duration of a PhD. program is between four to five years.

Regulations for Doctoral Programs

Joint Ph.D. (JPD) with SUNY Buffalo (UB)

• Students interested in being admitted into the JPD need to be first selected into the full-time PhD program in CSE at either Institution as per selection procedures of that Institution.
• JPD selection procedures will be initiated within 6-12 months of the student enrolling in the PhD program. Students selected into the JPD program shall be enrolled on a full-time basis at both Institutions.
• Before the student matriculates to UB - as a part of the residency requirement the student must fulfill UB’s minimum academic admission conditions
• UB’s required minimum score in English for language proficiency requirements (i.e. TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, CPE, CAE or DET)
• GATE (or equivalent as specified by MoE, Govt. of India) from India is mandatory.
• While the program specifically admits exceptional students following their completion of an appropriate Bachelor’s degree, it will also admit those who will have completed an appropriate Master’s degree.
• Dissertation will be jointly directed by faculty from both institutions
• Students will be awarded two separate PhD degrees, one from each institution
• Students will need to spend approximately equal time at each institution
• When in residence at UB, scholarship will cover tuition costs and a living allowance (stipend)
• When in residence at IITJ, scholarship will be at par with PhD students at IITJ
• When enrolled as a full-time PhD student at UB, all broad-based fees will be waived off. Covered fees include comprehensive fee, academic excellence and success fee, student activity fee, and international student fee (wherever applicable)

The normal route to the IMSc graduate research program is through an interview, and JEST ( Joint Entrance Screening Test )  is one of the means by which we screen students and select them for interview. The graduate program consists of two streams: the PhD and the Integrated PhD programme for Theoretical Computer Science in IMSc.

What is JEST ?

The Joint Entrance Screening Test in Theoretical Computer Science is a test conducted across the country each year, usually on a Sunday in the month of February. However, in 2021 it was held in April and 2022 in March.

What is the eligibility for appearing for JEST?

Anyone with a Bachelor's degree in CS or related disciplines, or an M.Sc./ M.E./ M.Tech./M.C.A. in CS or related disciplines, interested in the mathematical aspects of computer science is eligible to appear for JEST. Students in the final year of these courses are also eligible to appear for JEST. Examples of related disciplines are mathematics, statistics, information technology, etc.

What are the eligibility criteria for admission to Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. programme?

Students with a Master's degree (such as, M.Sc./M.E./M.Tech.) in CS or related disciplines are usually admitted to the PhD program. However, using background information, performance in the admission process, and other relevant information, the student may be advised to credit more courses (the courses can be at the Integrated Ph.D. level). The student should also meet the admission requirements for the PhD program given by HBNI.

Students having a B.Sc./B.E./B.Tech./M.C.A. in CS or related disciplines are admitted to the Integrated Ph.D. program. This means that they pick up a Masters' degree after two years in the graduate school, and a PhD degree on completion of the graduate school. The student should also meet the  admission requirements  for the Integrated PhD program given by HBNI.

Can I do a PhD part-time with my job?

No, we only admit full-time students at IMSc. However, if you register for PhD with some university, there are possibilities of research collaboration with IMSc. Please see our page on the Graduate Visitor Programme .

Can I use a GATE score instead of writing JEST in Theoretical Computer Science?

No. We use the GATE score as additional information.

What material is covered by the JEST questions for TCS?

What is the structure of the JEST examination for TCS?

It is a three-hour written test. The question paper consists of two parts:

• Part A is multiple-choice to be marked on the answer card provided. The answer card is collected by the invigilator at the end of 75 minutes of the exam. There are 25 questions of 3 marks each. Each correct answer carries 3 marks, each incorrect answer carries -1 mark. Unattempted questions fetch 0 marks.
• Part B requires short answers to be written on the space provided in the paper. There are around 9 questions, some are 8 marks and some are 12 marks.

How is the evaluation done?

• Part A is evaluated mechanically. Part A scores will be available at the JEST website . IMSc decides a first cutoff. Only for students who meet this first cutoff, Part B of the answer-book will be evaluated.
• The Part B scores are not declared. IMSc decides a second cutoff based on the performance in both parts.
• Students meeting this second cutoff are called for an interview to Chennai.
• Interview dates are usually during the last week of April and the first week of May.

What should I do to increase my chances of getting selected?

Here are some criteria which were followed by the TCS JEST examiners in recent years.

The first cutoff selects the top students among the Part A scores. IMSc chooses the cutoff depending on the number of students taking the examination and the number of answer-books for which Part B is to be evaluated (manually). For example,   in 2020 we chose the cutoff score to get the top 196 students in Part A .

• Among the top students with Part A scores, those who get low Part B scores are rejected.
• The top few among the Part B scores are selected. IMSc chooses this second cutoff depending on the number of students to be called to the interviews (to be done in a limited amount of time).
• Apart from this, we look at answers of candidates who top-score on individual questions in Part B (if very few candidates overall do well on a question they have an advantage), or if the answers are ingenious or meticulous enough to deserve extra credit. In 2020 we were able to call around 25 students for TCS interviews.

Integrated m.tech-ph.d (tech.) programme.

IIA conducts the Integrated M.Tech- Ph.D (Tech.) programme in Astronomical Instrumentation in collaboration with Department of Applied Optics and Photonics, University of Calcutta (CU). The Degree will be awarded by the University of Calcutta. The duration of M.Tech course work will be of 2 years divided into 4 semesters. After successful completion of the M. Tech course a student can opt for registration for Ph.D (Tech.) programme, subjected to a selection procedure and minimum cut-off grade.

Selection to this programme is through an entrance exam conducted in December followed by interview in May.

The Integrated M.Tech- Ph.D (Tech.) Programme will admit bright, highly motivated students with a three years B.Tech. degree (Post BSc Hons) in Optics and Optoelectronics / Radio Physics and Electronics from CU or B.Tech / BE degree in Electrical/ Instrumentation/ Electronics and Communications /Computer Science/Mechanical Engineering from an institution recognized by AICTE. A candidate with M.Sc degree in Physics / Electronic Science / Applied Mathematics /Applied Physics from a UGC recognized institution is also eligible to apply.

Selected students will be fully supported with a studentship of Rs. 20,000/- pm for the first two years. Students will be provided hostel accommodation, medical facilities; tuition fee will be student’s responsibility.

First two semester classes will be held at the Department of Applied Optics and Photonics, University of Calcutta. The third and fourth semester comprise of internship at IIA field stations and projects at IIA laboratories respectively. Upon successful completion of two years in the programme the candidates will be awarded a M.Tech in Astronomical instrumentation. In the third year of the Programme, students who qualify for continuation in the programme leading to the Ph.D (Tech.) degree will begin research work at IIA. They will be paid fellowship of Rs. 31,000/-pm beginning the third year, and Rs. 35,000/-pm beginning the fifth year of the programme. The normal duration of the programme will be 6 years, including the minimum 2 years for the Masters' Degree. The candidates would satisfy all the administrative requirements of the University and submit their Ph.D. thesis to the University of Calcutta.
