First there is the field of political anthropology, notably the history of colonialism and apartheid and the experience of state in northern Namibia. My main focus here is on how, in the context of this borderland, local actors experience and negotiate state and citizenship, on how expectations of the future shape(d) people’s past and present, and on the “culture of colonialism” under apartheid. In this regard, I published on the history of North-West Namibia and edited (with Gustaaf Verswijver) a volume on the marginalization of pastoralist communities (2004) and one on borders and boundaries in Africa (2013). A second research domain is best summarized under the header of “resource use”: how do people make use of the natural and other resources at their disposal? This question must be placed within the context of a dryland ecology and of the political and economic marginalization of the people inhabiting it. At the same time, it also takes into account urban–rural dynamics, and the far-reaching local impact of global flows of people, ideas and objects. So, these resources include cattle, but also people (judging by the many tourists venturing into the region); they include water, but also the recent finds of rich iron ore deposits near Opuwo, or the recent efforts by global investors speculating to find oil before the Namibian shore. Under this header, I published on the political ecology of the northern Kunene Region (or Kaoko); on the politics of water; on the effects of livestock disease (and of the technologies put in place to combat it); and on local life and politics under apartheid rule. A third and final research domain is that of the anthropology of the body. Under this header one finds my original interest in medical anthropology (see Van Wolputte et al. on medical pluralism in Kinshasa), or my earlier work on material culture as a technology of self and belonging in north-west Namibia. This general interest in bodiliness and embodiment also implies my more recent research on urban popular culture (notably, music production) and on alcohol (see in this regard the volume on beer in Africa [2010] I co-edited with Mattia Fumanti). This in turn led to my current interest  in ecstasy and intoxication as alternative venues to power and knowledge, in the anthropology of humour, and in the study of relatedness and sexuality in the context of rapid social change. Here also fits the projects on secondary cities, and one on so-called satellite cities in Africa I co-promote with Filip De Boeck and Ann Cassiman.
