Amy Adams and Matthew Goode have the charm necessary to float a romantic comedy like "Leap Year," and this is a story that needs their buoyancy. A sort of conspiracy forms between the audience and the screen: We know what has to happen, and the movie knows what has to happen, and the point is to keep us amused. "Leap Year" does better than that: It made me care. It does that by not being too obvious about what it is obviously trying to do.

Let's start off on the same page. A sweet but over-organized young woman named Anna (Amy Adams) has been dating a high-powered heart surgeon named Jeremy ( Adam Scott ) for four years. He's pleasant, attentive, presentable and shares her goal of buying a condo in the best building in Boston. He does nothing, absolutely nothing, wrong. For veteran filmgoers, he has one fatal flaw: He has a healthy head of hair, and every strand is perfectly in place. No modern movie hero can have his hair combed.

When, oh, when, will Jeremy ask Anna to marry her? After dashing her hopes yet again, he hurries off to Dublin for a cardiologists' convention, because as we all know, it's a professional necessity for cardiologists to meet in faraway places they're always wanting to go. Anna is told that in Ireland on Leap Day every four years, a woman can ask a man to marry her. Anna double-checks this on the Web, somehow not discovering that this is believed nearly everywhere, and if for instance a man on Denmark turned her down, he would have to buy her pairs of gloves.

Anna flies off to Ireland. The flight lasts only long enough for her to survive severe turbulence. The plane is diverted to Cardiff. Is anyone surprised that Anna doesn't arrive in Dublin on schedule? Despite canceled ferry boats, she makes her way to Ireland by hiring a tugboat. The skipper says they can't land at Cork but must head for Dingle. Dingle in Ireland is more or less as far as you can get from Wales (or Dublin), but never mind.

We know what's coming. Anna must meet her co-star, Declan, played by Matthew Goode as the owner of the local pub. I suspect business has fallen off ever since Robert Mitchum left after filming " Ryan's Daughter " there in 1969. Anna is now wet and tired but still plucky. In the pub, she asks Declan how she can get to Dublin. Turns out Declan is not only the publican but the taxi driver and runs the local hotel. They get a good smile out of this, but wouldn't you be asking yourself why neither one mentions " Local Hero "?

OK, enough fooling with the plot. Let's agree it stays firmly on course, and that Anna and Declan argue all the way to Dublin through adventures that, by law, must include get getting all muddy and them being forced to share a bedroom together. Therefore, the success of the film depends on the acting and direction.

Amy Adams and Matthew Goode sell it with great negative chemistry and appeal. Adams has an ability to make things seem fresh and new; everything seems to be happening to her for the first time, and she has a particularly innocent sincerity that's convincing. (Who once said if you can fake sincerity, you can fake anything?) Goode is wisely not made too handsome. Oh, you could shoot him as handsome; he's good-looking, let's face it. But the director, Anand Tucker , shoots him as annoyed, rude and scruffy. Hair not too well combed.

Then take another look at Jeremy. I'm not going to say he's too handsome. All I have to say is that in a silent movie, he could simply walk on the screen and you'd know he's not going to get the girl. The movie carefully avoids making him a heavy. It's rather clever: He smoothly does more or less exactly what she's trained him to do, and what he doesn't understand is that she no longer believes in that version of himself.

Bottom line: This is a full-bore, PG-rated, sweet rom-com. It sticks to the track, makes all the scheduled stops and bears us triumphantly to the station. And it is populated by colorful characters, but then, when was the last time you saw a boring Irishman in a movie?

Positive Messages

Although the movie makes the worthwhile point that women don’t have to sit and wait for their boyfriends to propose -- that they're in command of their own destinies -- it still pretty much hews to Hollywood's standard boy-meets-girl, boy-gets-girl, boy-loses-girl, couple-is-reunited fairy-tale structure.

Positive Role Models

Anna is very self-sufficient, but she comes off as kind of brittle, as if she just needs the "right guy“ to bring out her warmer side. Declan seems walled up -- like he's also waiting for the "right girl“ to make him feel safe enough to take a chance on love.

Violence & Scariness

Products & Purchases

Anna is label conscious, and much is made of her Louis Vuitton luggage.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

A woman gets tipsy at a wedding reception; also social drinking at a pub, where one regular keels over from inebriation (it's played for humor -- but, parents, remind kids that getting drunk isn't funny!).

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this upbeat but shallow romcom hews closely to traditional Hollywood formulas. While there isn't much in the way of age-inappropriate content for older tweens and teens -- who may find the banter between stars Amy Adams and Matthew Goode somewhat amusing -- the movie does tap into tired stereotypes about men, women, and romance. Adams' character is supposed to be seen as self-sufficient, but she ultimately comes off as yet another Hollywood female character who's just waiting for "the right one" to make everything right in her life. On the up side, language, sex, and violence are quite tame. To stay in the loop on more movies like this, you can sign up for weekly Family Movie Night emails .

Fine, but not for kids. Some kids could possibly watch it

Good movie but..., what's the story.

When her longtime boyfriend, Jeremy ( Adam Scott ), fails to propose before flying off to a medical conference in Dublin, Anna ( Amy Adams ) decides to take matters into her own hands. Leap Day (the 29th of February) is imminent, and the Irish apparently have a custom in which women can ask their boyfriends for their hand in marriage on that particular day. But a storm undoes her best-laid plans, and a detour lands her in beautiful but far-off Dingle. She hopes to get to the city in time by enlisting a broody local named Declan ( Matthew Goode) as her guide ... but he may just prove too intriguing for her to resist.

Is It Any Good?

Armchair tourists will find some good in this bland romantic comedy thanks to breathtaking shots of the Emerald Isle that will surely have them fantasizing about a visit. But there's not much else going for LEAP YEAR. How a stew featuring the appealing Adams, the magnetic Goode, and lyrical director Anand Tucker (who also helmed Hilary and Jackie and Shopgirl ) fails to generate any sparks is beyond comprehension. ( John Lithgow even makes a cameo.) What we get instead is an uninspired romcom that steps into the genre's every well-worn tread.

Polar-opposite personalities, meet-cute setup, overwrought situations created expressly to showcase how both characters change as they get to know each other -- that's all here. And must the other guy always seem like such a stooge? What's missing is chemistry -- Adams and Goode seem more like siblings -- and inventive storytelling to keep us glued to our seats, even though we know that, yes, indeed, there will be a happily ever after.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about what the film is saying about love and committment. Why does Anna want to marry Jeremy? Is she actually in love, or is she just ready to make a commitment and he happens to be the one she's with? What does that say about relationships?

Is Anna a positive role model for women? Is she dependent on relationships for happiness, or is she truly self sufficient?

How does this movie compare to other Hollywood romantic comedies? Is it a genre that's difficult to reinvent? If so, why?

Leap Year Review

Amy Adams shows once again that she has what it takes to headline a romantic comedy with grace and style in this entertaining and fun new film, which will make the perfect date flick this Valentine's season.

Amy Adams came on the scene with a terrific performance in the film "Junebug," which earned her an Oscar nomination and critical acclaim but it took her leading role in the romantic fairytale comedy "Enchanted" to really make her a star. Since then it seems that the actress can be found almost everywhere in a large array of different roles in different films such as the family comedy "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" in which she played flying legend Amelia Earhart, the drama "Doubt" which earned the actress a second Oscar nomination and most recently "Julie & Julia" opposite acting legend Meryl Streep. Now, the actress is back in the genre that made her famous, romantic comedies, with " Leap Year ," a film that could cement her place with audiences as the new Julia Roberts. Adams leads every scene she is in with grace and style, orchestrating her emotions and the comedy like a fine symphony. Her range of emotion adds to the comedy and you completely believe her eccentric and flustered character. Further more the actress makes you sympathize with her character. No matter how outrageous she is behaving you are rooting for her to succeed and find the love and life she is longing for. Adams single handedly makes this film work and that is the mark of a true movie star.

In the film, Adams plays Anna a successful woman living in Boston who works as a rental dresser, she makes apartments and homes look nice for prospective renters. Anna lives the seemingly perfect life, she is successful, has managed to get away from her meager beginnings, has a successful doctor boyfriend and are trying to get approval to buy her dream home, an exclusive condominium in downtown Boston. With everything going so well for Anna she gets extra excited when a girlfriend spots her boyfriend leaving a jewelry store with a small package. Positive that he is going to pop-the-question at dinner before he leaves for a business conference in Ireland the next day, Anna is devastated when there is no ring or proposal only earrings. Anna's disappointment of a Dad, played as funny as ever by John Lithgow, reminds her of an old Irish tradition that her relatives once followed, where if a woman asks a man to marry her on Leap Day, February 29th, the man has to say yes. Fueled with this knowledge, Anna heads to Ireland to find her boyfriend Jeremy and propose to him herself.

However her travel to Dublin, Ireland is not so easy as her plane experiences trouble mid-flight and must divert to Cardiff. Not letting the unexpected detour slow her down Anna is able to hire a boat to take her to Cork, but gets only as far as the Dingle peninsula, where she must stay at an Inn for the night. There she meets a surly Irish bar & innkeeper named Declan, played perfectly by Matthew Goode. Determined to make it to Ireland by the 29th, Anna makes a deal with him to take her cross-country to Dublin. On the way the couple experience car-trouble and are forced to walk, take a train and anything else they can do to get Anna to her destination. The two clearly do not get along, at first, and Anna becomes as annoyed with his country and his Irish ways as he does with her thankless attitude and continued complaining. One night, in order to get a room in a bed & breakfast they pose as a "real couple" and must convince several long time couples that they are the real deal. That of course includes sharing the same bed. After attending a local wedding the two begin to form a connection and start to warm up to each other. Now only hours from Dublin and her future-boyfriend, Anna is beginning to not want the trip to end or for her traveling companion to go away. Once in Dublin, as Anna and Declan are just about to confess their true feelings for each other, Jeremy walks in and purposes to Anna himself. Now, Anna must decide between the life that she thought she wanted so badly with Jeremy, and the feelings that she now has for Declan. What follows might surprise you as Anna finds out the true reasons behind Jeremy's change of heart and makes a shocking decision of her own.

Practically, not since Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman" has one actress' performance set the mood and tone so perfectly for a film. In the montage scene during the opening credits we get a quick taste of who her character is. It is so strong and so sure that by the time the film starts you have no questions about who this character is and what she wants. You are immediately sucked into the story and are off and running right away. Adams is surrounded by a strong cast of actors including the very talented Adam Scott from TV's "Party Down" as her would-be fiancé and the equally talented Matthew Goode from "Watchmen" as her Irish traveling companion. Both actors do an excellent job of playing their roles with humor and strength while never forgetting whom the real star of the film is and never over-shadowing her at all. Also strong in the film, all be it for only one scene, was acting-great John Lithgow, recently scene as a killer on TV's "Dexter." Lithgow plays Adams' slightly drunk and unimpressive father and in his one scene is able to get the plot rolling without it seeming forced or staged. All of the minor players in the film, specifically the local Irish people are fantastic especially the older couple who own the bed & breakfast and keep an eye out for some funny performances from the patron's at Declan's bar.

The script is well written, although it's not exactly a breakthrough in romantic comedies and we've certainly seen this type of film before, the writers do a marvelous job of telling a standard story in a new and original way with a unique twist. Director Anand Tucker does a great job of melting all the pieces of the story together and had the luxury of shooting the beautiful Irish landscape, which looks terrific in the film. In fact, cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel deserves special credit for making the glorious green landscape of Ireland come alive in such a bright and vibrant way. Ireland itself is a major character in the film. But the true star of the movie is Amy Adams who earns all the credit for being a steady anchor throughout the film that the audience can relate to. I think that the actress herself is, or at least seems to be in her public persona, a sweet and lovely young lady and I think its that perception that will gravitate fans to see the movie ... the fact that Amy Adams herself is so likable helps the film work a great deal. Is this movie for everyone? No, of course not. I'm sure fourteen year-old boys lining up for their third and fourth time to see "Avatar" won't be interested in this movie but that really doesn't matter. They're not exactly the target audience anyways. But the film really is the perfect "date movie" as women will relate to Adam's character and men will relate to Goode. I think that if audiences give Leap Year a chance this Valentine's season they will be pleasantly surprised by how likable the film really is and that has mostly to do with Ms. Adams performance. If the jury had been out on who would be the heir-apparent to Julia Roberts ... I think they just came in and we finally have a verdict!

Why Forgotten Amy Adams Rom-Com ‘Leap Year’ Is the Perfect Flick for Leap Day

It’s a leap year ! If you’re looking for the perfect way to celebrate this February’s extra day, look no further than “Leap Year,” the 2010 romantic comedy from Anand Tucker starring Amy Adams .

In the film, Adams’ Anna, a successful real estate stager, grows tired of waiting for her longtime boyfriend Jeremy (Adam Scott) to propose. When he heads to Dublin for a work conference, Anna learns of the Irish tradition known as Bachelor’s Day, during which women can propose to men on Feb. 29, aka Leap Day.

Of course, many would argue a woman could propose on any given day, but part of the movie’s charm is its resolutely old-fashioned approach.

Popular on Variety

Their journey together includes some of the all-time great rom-com tropes, from the duo being forced to share a single bed at a bed & breakfast, having to kiss to pretend they’re a couple and experiencing a drunken night of revelry bringing their true feelings to the surface.

When Jeremy reemerges and offers Anna everything she’s hoped for, she’s forced to decide between her well-made plans and her growing feelings for Declan.

The film was largely panned by critics upon its release, with Dennis Harvey calling it “pedestrian” and “gratingly old-fashioned” in his Variety review . Time even called it the worst film of the year .

“Citizen Kane” it’s not, but “Leap Year” is the perfect romp for those who enjoy elevated Hallmark fare and a sweet (if not groundbreaking) romance. Adams oozes charisma in a performance filled with heart and humor, flanked by a fun supporting cast including Kaitlin Olson and John Lithgow.

Set against the backdrop of the Irish countryside, the scenery alone makes this one worth a watch (even though anyone with a cursory knowledge of Irish geography will quickly notice a slew of inaccuracies, like characters walking from Dingle to Tipperary in a single day).

This Leap Day, consider turning your brain off for just a moment and enjoying this charming, imperfect blast from the past.

When Anna's ( Amy Adams, "Enchanted," "Julie & Julia") boyfriend Jeremy ( Adam Scott, "Knocked Up," " Step Brothers") presents her with diamond earrings instead of the expected engagement ring , she decides to take matters into her own hands using the Irish tradition that a woman may propose to a man on February 29, but once in Ireland her plans are derailed when she meets a local, Declan (Matthew Goode, "Watchmen," " A Single Man"), during " Leap Year."

Laura's Review: C-

This film is a wallow in sub-mediocrity not only by stars Adams and Goode, who somehow remain likeable, but for director Anand Tucker (" Hilary and Jackie," "And When Did You Last See Your Father?") as well. What is undeniably the worst aspect of the movie, however, is that screenwriters Deborah Kaplan & Harry Elfont's (" Surviving Christmas," "Made of Honor") work is being treated as original when what they have done is a charmless hack of Powell and Pressburger's " I Know Where I'm Going" with a dash of "Local Hero's" (itself based on "I Know Where I'm Going") all purpose innkeeper thrown in. About all "Leap Year" has going for it is its scenery (which includes Goode and Adams). In "I Know Where I'm Going" a wealthy woman has a difficult journey to a Scottish isle where she is set to marry her industrialist fiance. Bad weather keeps her from making her final crossing and she meets the penniless local Laird who dances with her at a local caleigh and has a charming family legend tied to the ruins of a castle which ends up applying to them. All Kaplan and Elfont have done is transfer the action to Ireland and thrown in the Leap Year twist. Otherwise their heroine has an arduous journey to become engaged, meets a local pub owner who takes her to a ruined castle and tells her its legend, which mirrors what is happening with them and dances with her at a local wedding which they crash. In both, the woman's big city ways are brought down to earth, but in "Leap Year" she's turned into a fool who wears $600 peep-toed platforms in the dead of winter, through hurricanes and cow pastures, even knocking out a bride by flinging one while dancing (a scene as painful for the audience as for the bride). Further, the filmmakers make some seriously lazy gaffes regarding time tables. The 'Boston' opening is not only clearly not Boston (aside from an establishing skyline, the film was shot entirely in Ireland), but cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel's ("Valkyrie") lighting is so harsh, one can see every pore and downy hair on Adams's face. Things improve when the action changes to the Emerald Isle where interior lighting becomes much warmer and locations are often breathtakingly beautiful. Adams's Anna is a bit of a pill and it's difficult to buy into Declan's romantic feelings for her, but the actress's natural glow and spirit eventually just squeak through (which, frankly, is what happens with "I Know Where I'm Going's" Wendy Hiller although Hiller kept her dignity intact). Matthew Goode has slowly been building a solid and varied filmography and remains very appealing in not very good movies, "Leap Year" being his only misstep since his American feature debut in 2004's " Chasing Liberty" (a film I only remember for having taken note of the actor). Third billed John Lithgow (SHOtime's "Dexter") has only one short scene as Anna's irresponsible father who sets up the Leap Day proposal concept. Veteran Irish character actors Tony Rohr and Maggie McCarthy add some color as a Stationmaster and his wife who run a romantic but morally strict B&B. The film wraps just the way one would expect, with a contrived bump in even the final scene which sends Anna, in one of the ugliest dresses a woman could pick to woo a man, out to scenic Irish cliffs. Kaplan and Elfont, whose (worse) " Made of Honor" involved an American going to Scotland and getting engaged to a local, definitely need a change of scenery - go Brách.

Leap Year

Review by Brian Eggert January 8, 2010

Leap Year

Almost everything you need to know about Leap Year is in the trailer. Why do you need to see the movie? Because you want to know who the plucky girl ends up with (as if you couldn’t guess), since that’s the only aspect of the story that the trailer doesn’t reveal. It ought to come with a spoiler warning (this review does). Then again, you don’t see a movie like this to find out what happens. Of course, the two characters on the movie poster end up together—that’s why they’re on the poster. You sit through this movie because you enjoy romantic comedies and the warm feelings they give you. This one is full of warm feelings and laughter and attractive stars doing endearing-if-predictable things.

The movie begins with Anna (Amy Adams), who has been dating a successful, well-groomed surgeon named Jeremy (Adam Scott) for four years. He doesn’t seem to get that she wants a ring, and apparently, they don’t have the kind of relationship where they talk about marriage. Jeremy goes off to a medical convention in Ireland, leaving Amy to sulk until she remembers that there’s an old Irish adage that says every four years on Leap Day, a woman can ask a man to marry her. Why she can’t do that any other day of the year is beyond understanding; Anna is simply desperate for a reason to get married. (Question: Are these two such traditionalists that it would end their four-year relationship if she proposed on February 28 or March 1?)

Anyway, Anna decides to follow Jeremy to Ireland and surprise him with her proposal. But, of course, her plane doesn’t arrive on time and she’s diverted to Cardiff instead of Dublin. At a local pub, she meets Declan (Matthew Goode), who offers to drive her to the rendezvous so she can propose. On the way, the two get into all sorts of silly rom-com trouble. They play a couple to get The Last Room in Ireland, and there’s that moment where they’re forced to fake a kiss to keep up the act, during which they realize that smacking lips with each other was pretty nice (see last year’s The Proposal for the same scene). If after that you believe she’ll end up with her boyfriend at the end of the movie, well, there’s just no helping you.

Directed by Anand Tucker ( Shopgirl ) and written by husband and wife screenwriting team Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont ( Can’t Hardly Wait ), the movie suspiciously resembles the 1945 British romance I Know Where I’m Going! by filmmakers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. The two plots are grossly similar, save for a shift from Scotland in the earlier film to Ireland in the new one. In Powell and Pressburger’s picture, a snooty woman (Wendy Hiller) thinks she’s in love with the money of a wealthy Scottish Lord and plans to get hitched, but she’s forced to wait on the mainland for the windy waters to settle before she can travel by boat to be married on his isle. While waiting, she meets a rugged Scotsman (Roger Livesey) and finds herself falling in love with him; eventually, she drops her gold-digger plot and chooses the man she actually loves. That Powell and Pressburger weren’t mentioned in the credits of Leap Year is troublesome.

Leap Year plays out complete with all the expected rom-com antics, taking us nowhere we haven’t been before and enjoyed a lot more. But the movie is harmless, more so than others of its kind with a PG rating. Because the result is so incredibly conventional, there’s not much to savor here beyond the actors. The ever-cute Adams plays her role as if she’s never lived a day in her life, an acting niche she’s more than explored already (see Enchanted or Miss Pettigrew Lives for Day ). Goode makes a likable beau; his Irish charm and charming good looks are certainly charming. And Scott’s character Jeremy is so thinly drawn that we don’t even mind when Anna chooses Declan over him—whoops, did I spoil that for you? If these few bits of acting talent are enough to save the movie for you, by all means, see it. The rest of us will be waiting for something more inventive from the genre.

Summary [ ]

The film follows a real estate worker who heads to Ireland to ask her boyfriend to accept her wedding proposal on leap day , when tradition supposedly holds that men cannot refuse a woman's proposal for marriage. Her plans are interrupted by a series of events and are further complicated when she hires an Irish innkeeper to take her to her boyfriend in Dublin. Principal photography took place in County Wicklow , Dublin , County Mayo , and County Galway , with filming taking place in and around the Aran Islands , Connemara , Temple Bar , Georgian Dublin , Wicklow National Park, and Olaf Street, Waterford .

Successful real estate stager Anna Brady is frustrated that her cardiologist boyfriend Jeremy Sloane still has not proposed to her after four years. She decides to travel from Boston to Dublin , to propose to him on February 29, leap day , while he is there at a conference. Anna wishes to invoke an Irish tradition, Bachelor's Day , that a man who is proposed to on leap day must accept the proposal.

During the flight, a storm diverts the plane to Cardiff , Wales . Anna hires a boat to take her west to Cork . The severity of the storm forces her to be put ashore at a small seaside village called Dingle. Anna requests Declan O'Callaghan, a surly Irish innkeeper, to taxi her to Dublin. At first he refuses, but after his tavern is threatened with foreclosure, he agrees to drive her for € 500. Along the way, he mocks her belief in a leap year tradition of women proposing to men.

A herd of cows blocks the road. Anna steps in cow dung while attempting to move the animals, and tries to clean her shoes while leaning on Declan's car, which causes it to roll downhill into a stream. Continuing on foot, Anna flags down a van with three travellers who offer her a lift. Ignoring Declan's warning, Anna hands them her luggage. They drive off without her. Anna and Declan make their way on foot to a roadside pub, where they discover the three thieves going through Anna's luggage. Declan fights them and retrieves Anna's bag.

While waiting for a train, they ask each other what they would grab if their homes were on fire and they had only 60 seconds to flee. They lose track of time and miss the train. They are forced to stay at a bed & breakfast in Tipperary , where they pretend to be married so that their conservative hosts will allow them to stay. During dinner, when other couples kiss to show their love for each other, Anna and Declan are "forced" to kiss as well. This stirs feelings that neither had expected. They sleep in the same bed, but do not admit their new feelings for each other.

While hitchhiking , Anna and Declan are caught in a hailstorm and take shelter in a nearby church, where a wedding is taking place. They are invited to the reception, where Anna gets drunk. Anna questions her own intentions with Jeremy and realizes that she has feelings for Declan. Just as the two are about to kiss, Anna vomits and passes out. The following day they arrive in Dublin. Declan reveals he was once engaged but his fiancée ran off to Dublin with his mother's claddagh ring and his best friend. Anna suggests that while in Dublin, he should ask for his mother's ring back. When they arrive at the hotel where Jeremy is staying, Jeremy surprises Anna by proposing to her right in the lobby. Seeing that Declan had already walked out of the hotel, she accepts Jeremy's proposal.

At their engagement party in Boston, Anna learns that Jeremy proposed because he thought it was the only way to appease the co-op board of the apartment building the couple wanted to move into. Dismayed, Anna pulls the fire alarm and waits, testing the 60-second concept she discussed with Declan earlier. Jeremy retrieves all of their electronic materials and neglects to check for Anna. Anna realizes there is nothing in the apartment that means anything to her, including Jeremy. Meanwhile, in Dublin, Declan retrieves his mother's claddagh ring from his ex-fiancée.

Anna returns to the tavern in Dingle, where Declan has pulled together the balance he owed his property owner with the help of the community. She tells him she has broken off her engagement and proposes that they get together, and not make plans. Declan leaves. Thinking she has been rejected, Anna rushes outside to the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea. Declan emerges, revealing that he went out to retrieve his mother's claddagh ring. Declan says he wants to make plans with her, and proposes on the cliffside. Anna happily accepts. They drive away in Declan's car after marrying, leaving their destination open to fate.

Production [ ]

On October 17, 2008, it was announced that Amy Adams was to star in the film as Anna Brady. On November 23, Anand Tucker signed on to direct the film, with Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan collaborating on the screenplay. On February 12, 2009, it was announced that Matthew Goode would be playing the role of Declan O'Callaghan, the surly innkeeper. On March 18, it was announced that Adam Scott was to play Jeremy Sloane, Anna's long time boyfriend, and that Kaitlin Olson would play Libby, Anna's best friend. The film was shot in County Wicklow , Dublin , County Mayo and County Galway , with filming taking place in and around the Aran Islands , Connemara , Temple Bar , Georgian Dublin , Wicklow National Park and Olaf Street, Waterford . On October 19, it was announced that Randy Edelman had been chosen to compose the film's score . The decision to choose Edelman came as a surprise, as Tucker had used Barrington Pheloung for two of his previous films, Hilary & Jackie and When Did You Last See Your Father? .

Reception [ ]

On Rotten Tomatoes the film has an approval rating of 23% and an average rating of 4.30/10 based on reviews from 141 critics. The site's critical consensus is that: " Amy Adams is as appealing as ever, but her charms aren't enough to keep Leap Year from succumbing to an overabundance of clichés and an unfunny script'." On Metacritic the film has a weighted average score out of 33 out of 100, based on 30 reviews. Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film a grade B on scale of A to F.

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave it 3 out of 4, and described Leap Year as a 'full-bore, PG-rated, sweet rom-com'. 'It sticks to the track, makes all the scheduled stops, and bears us triumphantly to the station'. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly gave the film a B− grade, stating that the film could have used more 'pizzazz'.

Nathan Rabin of The A.V. Club , gave it a grade of C− and concluded, "The film functions as the cinematic equivalent of a Shamrock Shake: sickeningly, artificially sweet, formulaic, and about as authentically Gaelic as an Irish Spring commercial". A. O. Scott of The New York Times saw it as "so witless, charmless, and unimaginative, that it can be described as a movie only in a strictly technical sense". Richard Roeper gave it a C−, stating that it had a 'Recycled plot, lame sight gags, Leprechaun -like stock Irish characters,' adding that 'The charms of Amy Adams rescue Leap Year from Truly Awful status'. [ failed verification ]

Donald Clarke of The Irish Times gave the film one star out of five, and in a scathing review, described it as 'offensive, reactionary, patronising filth' and cited the film as evidence that 'Hollywood is incapable of seeing the Irish as anything but IRA men or twinkly rural imbeciles'. Paul Whitington of the Irish Independent describes the film as "grotesque and insulting paddywhackery " and says Goode is out of his depth as he "struggle[s] badly with his accent".

The film's lead actor Matthew Goode admitted 'I just know that there are a lot of people who will say it is the worst film of 2010' and revealed that the main reason he signed on to the film was so that he could work close to home and be able to see his girlfriend and newborn daughter.

No, the romantic comedy Leap Year isn't on Netflix to watch on Leap Day (where to stream)

By mads lennon | feb 29, 2024.

Leap Year Official Trailer #1 - Amy Adams, Matthew Goode Movie (2010) HD

This year marks a special one because it's a leap year, meaning that we get one extra day today, February 29, 2024. This occasion only happens once every four years, which means it seems like a good time to revisit the adorable 2010 romantic comedy film Leap Year co-starring Amy Adams and Matthew Goode.

Unfortunately for Netflix subscribers, Leap Year is no longer available to watch on the platform, at least, not in the United States. As of right now, the movie actually isn't streaming on any of the major streaming services. Instead, you'll need to rent or purchase the movie digitally (or physically) to revisit it in time for this unique holiday.

For those who would like to rent or buy the movie at home, you can rent it for $3.99 or buy it for $4.99 . Usually, the price is higher, but it looks like most services are running a limited sale timed for Leap Day that brings the price down from $14.99, so now is the best time to get it!

Below is a list of the services where you can currently purchase or rent Leap Year digitally.

  • Google Play

Anand Tucker ( The Critic ) directed this charming rom-com with a script penned by Can't Hardly Wait and Josie and the Pussycats duo Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan.

Academy Award-nominated actress Amy Adams plays Anna, who travels to Ireland to meet with her boyfriend Declan (Matthew Goode) on leap day. Tradition says that on this specific day, women are encouraged to propose to their boyfriends instead of the other way around, but Anna's plans are interrupted by a series of mishaps.

While Leap Year didn't exactly garner critical praise when it debuted, it has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years thanks to the chemistry between its leads and because it's one of the few mainstream films actually centered on the premise of a leap year.

Rotten Tomatoes® Score

Almost everything you need to know about Leap Year is in the trailer. Why do you need to see the movie? ...You sit through this movie because you enjoy romantic comedies and the warm feelings they give you.

The worst film of 2010. [Full review in Spanish]

Nothing deep, but its serendipity nature is uplifting for those of us who believe that life is full of surprises and somehow it works out the way it's supposed to be.

...so painfully contrived that it drains the spirit and disturbs the soul; rarely has a film strived for laughs to so little effect...

No romantic comedy or Emerald Isle cliché is left unturned, but Adams and Goode's charm should be enough to get an indulgent viewer to the finishing line.

A decent way for budding couples to begin 2010.

Welcome another gentleman Brit to possible leading-man status in Hollywood. Everyone else involved should redact Leap Year from his or her résumé.

Poor Amy Adams.

If a worse film is released this year I'll eat my own weight in cuddly leprechauns. So I will. So I will.

Amy Adams is such a likable actress that she makes the romantic comedy "Leap Year" worth watching even though we've seen it all before.

Kate winslet's upcoming $5.2 billion franchise movie will make up for this year's disappointing rotten tomatoes show.

The Rotten Tomatoes rating for Kate Winslet's latest HBO miniseries is disappointing, but her upcoming franchise sequel will make up for it.

  • The Regime's weak satire is a disappointment, but Kate Winslet's upcoming Avatar 3 promises critical redemption for the actor.
  • With Avatar 3 set to surpass The Regime's Rotten Tomatoes score, Winslet's career remains unaffected by the miniseries' tepid reception.
  • Winslet's strong performance in The Regime still stands out among the mixed reviews.

Kate Winslet's new HBO series The Regime is a big disappointment, but her upcoming entry in a huge sci-fi franchise can make up for the show's Rotten Tomatoes rating. It's easy to see what attracted Winslet to her latest HBO miniseries. The ingredients were there for the political satire to be something special; it was her return to HBO following the acclaim of Mare of Easttown , it was created by Will Tracy ( The Menu , Succession ) and half the episodes were helmed by veteran director Stephen Frears ( Dangerous Liaisons ). Even The Regime's cast included heavyweights like Andrea Riseborough and Hugh Grant.

Sadly, The Regime is the weakest of Kate Winslet's three HBO shows to date . The satire lacks any real bite or nuance and is also oddly timid about engaging with real-world politics. Of course, the bulk of the show's Rotten Tomatoes reviews rave about Winslet's performance. She anchors the series, bringing depth to a character who is often in danger of being a caricature.

The Regime Ending Explained: What THAT Character's Death Really Means

Kate winslet's next confirmed project after the regime is avatar 3, winslet's next project will be one of the 2025's biggest movies.

Avatar 3 is the third entry in James Cameron's five-movie franchise set in the fictional world of Pandora. Following Jake Sully and Neytiri's first encounter in 2009's Avatar and Colonel Miles Quaritch's retaliation in 2022's The Way of Water, Avatar 3 sees the Na'vi heroes come across a fire Na'vi tribe known as the Ash People.

Fans of the star's work are in for a long wait since Winslet's next project Avatar 3 won't arrive until December 2025 . Regardless, the next James Cameron Avatar movie is all but guaranteed to be a major success, with Winslet set to reprise her role as Ronal of the Metkayina clan. The previous entry, The Way of Water, reunited the star with her Titanic director James Cameron, and while there were doubts viewers would turn up for a belated sequel, it went on to gross $2.3 billion.

The Avatar movies have grossed a collective $5.2 billion at the box office, and there are another three movies on the horizon.

So in short, yes, audiences will definitely turn out for the third chapter. The Avatar movies have grossed a collective $5.2 billion at the box office, and there are another three movies on the horizon. It will be interesting to see what the next outing does with Winslet's Ronal, considering the character didn't have a major role in The Way of Water.

Avatar 3 Is Almost Guaranteed To Have A Better Rotten Tomatoes Score Than The Regime

The first two avatars are "certified fresh".

The Regime is by no means a disaster, with the miniseries containing some great performances (especially from Riseborough and co-star Danny Webb) and production design. The show is still a disappointment, however, considering the wealth of talent behind it. Regardless, its tepid reception won't impact Winslet's career in the long run. As is often the case when she appears in projects with mixed reviews, Winslet was still considered the strongest part of the misfiring Regime .

Avatar 3 might not receive universal acclaim, but it will no doubt leap over The Regime's Rotten Tomatoes score - even if that doesn't sound like the highest of bars.

The show's RT score is noticeably down from her other HBO outings too; it has a 57% rating compared to Mare of Easttown's 95%. Avatar 3 might not receive universal acclaim, but it will no doubt leap over The Regime's Rotten Tomatoes score - even if that doesn't sound like the highest of bars. Still, Avatar 3 should offer Winslet some redemption for The Regime's RT performance, though there is a decent chance many will have forgotten about the latter when December 2025 arrives.

The Regime is streaming exclusively on Max.

Source: Rotten Tomatoes

The Regime is an HBO/Max mini-series that takes place over the course of one year and follows a failing dictator as her fictional empire begins to crumble around her. The show sees the beginning of the end of the dictatorship and the challenges that the Chancellor faces to keep her unsustainable rule afloat.

We break down all the biggest news coming out of las vegas' cinemacon 2024, where studios and their theatrical partners present a look at the year ahead..

Wednesday, April 10

Universal studios and focus features electrify cinemacon with nosferatu ,  twisters , wicked , and more.

Universal Studios ended the Wednesday presentations at CinemaCon with a look ahead to their upcoming slate and preview glimpses of some of their most anticipated titles, ranging from family fare to terrifying horror.

Willem Dafoe in Nosferatu (2024)

We’ve gotten a few images from Robert Eggers’ upcoming horror remake Nosferatu , but Focus Features shared the very first trailer with audiences today at CinemaCon. The film, a long-gestating passion project for Eggers, stars Lily-Rose Depp as a young woman who becomes the object of desire for a terrifying vampire played by Bill Skarsgård , with a supporting cast that includes Nicholas Hoult , Willem Dafoe , Aaron Taylor-Johnson , and Emma Corrin . In the trailer, we see Depp’s character praying by candlelight before the camera makes ominous, sweeping movements to showcase the setting of the film. Later Depp asks, “Professor, does evil come from within us or beyond?” and we see images of fire, blood, and a stake in the heart. In other words, good times all around.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo present Wicked (2024) at CinemaCon 2024

One of the larger presentations from Universal was the one that ended the event, and what a fantastic ending it was. Producer Mark Platt, director Jon M. Chu , and stars Jeff Goldblum , Michelle Yeoh , Jonathan Bailey , and of course Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande took the stage to talk about their experiences making Wicked , with Chu in particular getting emotional as he sang the praises of Erivo and Grande: “Boy, did they blow the roof off this thing.” The audience was also treated to an exclusive look at the upcoming film, due out on November 27, 2024, which showcased the relationship between the two main characters, the practical sets, and rich costuming, as well as a hint of the conflict at the center of the film.

Anthony Ramos and Glen Powell speak onstage during the Universal Pictures and Focus Features Presentation during CinemaCon 2024

Wicked wasn’t the only tornado-related title to grace the stage at CinemaCon today, as director Lee Isaac Chung presented his upcoming film Twisters with some help from his stars Glen Powell , Daisy Edgar-Jones , and Anthony Ramos . Chung, who makes the leap to blockbuster spectacle after his decidedly smaller-scale Oscar-winning 2020 drama Minari , explained how the process was just as frightening for him as facing a tornado and talked about making the film “as immersive and real as possible.” After a fun bit when Edgar-Jones brought large fans onto the stage to blow water, leaves, and an inflatable cow at Powell and Ramos, the group shared a reel of new work-in-progress footage, depicting the formation of the storm-chasing team and the destructive power of a mega tornado formed from two smaller ones.

Other Items

  • Illumination debuted a new sequence from Despicable Me 4 (7/3/24) featuring new characters and Steve Carell’ s Gru dealing with fatherhood
  • Universal highlighted its horror offerings, including an emphasis on Jordan Peele projects, and announced a sequel to video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s
  • Leigh Whannell’ s new version of  Wolf Man , which stars Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner and just kicked off production, presented some early footage
  • James Watkins’ English-language remake of the 2022 Danish thriller  Speak No Evil , starring James McAvoy , debuted its first trailer
  • Director Chris Sanders and star Lupita Nyong’o presented unfinished footage of their upcoming animated film The Wild Robot for DreamWorks
  • Focus Features also screened teasers for titles like Back to Black , The Bikeriders , and Conclave

Lionsgate Previews  John Wick Spin-Off Ballerina , Michael Jackson Biopic  Michael , and More

Day 2 of CinemaCon began with Lionsgate previewing over a dozen titles at The Colosseum Theater at Caesar’s Palace.

John Wick Presents: Ballerina

Keanu Reeves and Ana de Armas

(Photo by Gabe Ginsberg, Jon Kopaloff/Getty Images)

Baba Yaga is back! As revealed in first-look footage shown at the presentation, Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as John Wick in the new spin-off movie Ballerina . The film, which has been officially retitled  John Wick Presents: Ballerina , will be set between John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 and will follow Ana De Armas’ title character on her journey to become a legendary assassin. At one point in the sneak peek, she asks Wick, “How do I start doing what you do?” to which he replies, “Looks like you already have.” Expect De Armas and Ballerina to deliver on another exciting installment in the franchise as the film matches John Wick’ s slick visuals and over-the-top action sequences. Keanu isn’t the only returning face for the film, though, as both Anjelica Huston and Ian McShane briefly appeared in the footage. Walking Dead alumnus Norman Reedus was also featured, teasing a villainous turn.

Jaafar Jackson as Michael Jackson in Michael (2025)

Producer Graham King took the stage to introduce the world to Michael , coming to theaters in April of 2025. The Michael Jackson biopic looks to follow in the footsteps of his previous hit Bohemian Rhapsody . He revealed the film will feature over 30 songs from Jackson’s career as the story unfolds over the course of the singer’s life. First-look footage showed Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s real-life nephew, stepping into MJ’s shoes and hitting his signature dance moves on a concert stage. The event film, directed by Antoine Fuqua , hopes to match the words uttered by Jackson in the footage: “It’s just not a sound. It moves through your body, transports your entire being. That is what I want the world to feel — magic.”

Good Fortune

Aziz Ansari presenting his film Good Fortune at CinemaCon 2024

Ballerina wasn’t the only time we saw Keanu this morning. In an extended first look at Aziz Ansari’ s Good Fortune , it was revealed the star will play an angel in the upcoming comedy. Reeves’ Gabriel looks to change the life of Ansari’s down-on-his-luck character by allowing him to switch places with a wealthy man played by Seth Rogen . When the situation doesn’t work out quite as expected, Gabriel loses his wings, making him human and leading him to become Rogen’s roommate. The always hilarious Ansari came on stage to thank exhibitors who “left the strip club this morning to come to the presentation” and say that he doesn’t buy into the idea that theatrical comedies aren’t a thing. “People do want to come to the theater and laugh together. I think we can do it. I don’t think we can say this genre doesn’t work.”
