New Lutron Connect Bridge and App Bring IoT to RadioRA, HomeWorks QS Lighting & Shades

Lighting-controls giant Lutron Electronics is no stranger to the cloud, but its richest IoT-enabling gateways and apps have been reserved for Lutron’s DIY products including Caseta lighting and Serena motorized shades.

Now Lutron has introduced an IoT solution for its flagship Radio RA2 and HomeWorks QS (HWQS) lighting controls for the pro channel. It’s called Lutron Connect, comprised of the Connect Bridge IoT gateway ($300 “retail”) and Lutron Connect app (free).

It’s not the first cloud service for RA2 and HomeWorks, but it beats the legacy version called Home Control+, which provides only limited integration among Lutron’s own lighting controls, shades and (Honeywell) thermostats. It does not enable cloud-to-cloud integration with popular products and services such as Nest thermostats.

Lutron has spent the last two years improving its SHaaS (smart home as a service) platform, but the company has applied these improvements only to its consumer line of products, namely, Caseta lighting and Serena motorized shades. Those products can connect to the Internet and to other IoT products via Lutron’s newish Smart Bridge and Smart Bridge Pro gateways.

The consumer solutions provide features that the original Home Control+ for pros does not have, for example, geo-fencing and cloud-to-cloud integration with third-party devices like Nest.

The new Lutron Connect will enable most of these functions, as well as Apple and Android widgets like clock synchronization and locked-screen access.

In fact, eventually Lutron Connect will work pretty much like the Smart Bridge products, except the new model supports Radio Ra and HomeWorks QS instead of the consumer-grade Caseta lighting and Serena shades.

But not all of the Smart Bridge features, such as IFTTT integration, will be available at launch.

“IFTTT was not prioritized for the initial release of the Connect Bridge and Connect app,” says Rich Black, director of residential business sevelopment for Lutron. “HomeWorks QS already has native conditional programming, and both HWQS and RA2 have great integration with the best third-party control systems (Savant, Control4, etc.).”

What Connect will have is many of the consumer-friendly programming features already available to consumers via Smart Bridge. HomeWorks and RA2 users will enjoy a new “HomeGlance” dashboard for mobile devices, as well as more ways to personalize their UI with images.

image

How the Lutron Gateways Work

Currently, HomeWorks QS and Radio Ra 2 (RA2) connect to the Internet via the HWQS Processor or RA2 Main Repeater. But these controllers have been around for so long, they don’t take advantage of some of the latest cloud-based network configuration services. Furthermore, the existing Home Control+ service is not cloud-based, per se. Instead, Lutron’s local hardware is the Web server and users “remote in” to that.

Ultimately, Lutron wants to “move to an architecture where all of this [Web services] isn’t becoming a burden to the processor,” says Black. “The cloud will be a single point of contact for programming and processing.”

The new Connect Bridge and cloud service represent the first phase of that move to the cloud, but offloading all of the current HomeWorks and RA2 services to the SHaaS platform will take some time. As such, not all of the services available through the Smart Bridge and Smart Bridge Pro will be available to the Connect Bridge at launch.

At the same time, integration with third-party controllers occurs via the local network “but as more controllers move to cloud APIs, the Connect Bridge will be used to keep RA2 and HWQS systems at the leading edge of the home automation industry” via the cloud, says Black.

Right now, the only cloud-to-cloud integration for Lutron Connect is with Nest and Honeywell IP thermostats.

Physically, the Connect Bridge connects to the HWQS processor or RA2 repeater over the home network. The bridge enables easy and secure access to Lutron’s Connect service, eliminating the need for special network configurations normally required of the integrator.

The Smart Bridge gateways communicate differently. The devices include Lutron’s proprietary Clear Connect RF technology for communicating directly with Clear Connect-enabled smart devices like Serena shades, Caseta light switches, and TouchPro thermostats.

Homebridge plugin for Lutron Homeworks Interactive lighting systems

davebeyer/homebridge-lutron-hwi

Folders and files, repository files navigation, homebridge plugin for lutron homeworks interactive.

This homebridge plugin allows you to connect your HomeKit (and Apple Home app) to Lutron Homeworks Interactive lighting. It works with Lutron's "Homeworks Interactive" processor model, or other models that provide an RS-232 interface that support the "FADEDIM", "RDL", and "DLMON" commands and the "DL" status updates as used and formatted in Homeworks Interactive.

Allows dimmable (and non-dimmable) control of Lutron Homeworks Interactive lighting circuits.

A custom circuits.json file is used to list the names and Lutron addresses of all lighting circuits.

Responds to Apple HomeKit state requests immediately with last known state while issuing a (slower, RS-232) state request in the background.

Recognizes and handles asynchronous state updates (such as when someone turns on, off, or dims a circuit using a keypad).

Prioritizes user commands (switch a light on or off, or dim it) over lower-priority HomeKit-generated requests for current lighting status, which can be of particularl benefit just after re-activating the Home app as it requests current status on many or all circuits at once.

Handles circuit counts in excess of the Apple HomeKit limit of 149 devices per bridge by supporting multiple Homebridge processes with a single 'server' process providing the RS-232 interface (via telnet) and the other 'client' processes feeding requests and receiving status via IPC sockets.

The basic steps for using this plugin are:

Run a Homebridge process on some server (always-on computer) on your local home network, such as on a Raspberry Pi processor . Also see Homebridge Service Command for details on how to setup Homebridge as a service. E.g., start, stop, and restart the homebridge process using sudo hb-service [start|stop|restart] .

Install this homebridge-lutron-hwi plugin into your system. Typically:

Add the plugin into your Homebridge configuration on the "plugins" page in the Homebridge UI.

Create your JSON circuits file (see format below) to give the names and Lutron addresses for your lighting circuits.

Set the plugin configuration parameters using the Homebridge UI, or directly in the homebridge config.json file (see config options below).

Scan the QR code on the status page of the Homebridge UI web page on your iOS device to register your lighting bridge with HomeKit.

Your lighting circuits should then appear, initially all in the "Default Room" of your Apple iOS "Home" app, ready to switch on & off or dim from 0 to 100%.

Connecting to Lutron

This plugin currently assumes a TCP/Telnet-to-RS232 converter is used to communicate with the Lutron Homeworks Interactive processor(s), such as the Digi Connect SP . Consult the Homeworks documentation for the required RS-232 settings. Once you have Telnet from a terminal window working, you're ready to connect via this plugin.

Config options

The following settings are used to configure the plugin (accessible via the plugin's "Settings" in the Homebridge UI, or directly by editing the homebridge config.json file.

Specifying circuit addresses and names

Specify the circuit addresses and names in a JSON file, referenced in the config options. The file must be in JSON format and provide an array that lists each circuit's address and name structured like the following:

It seems that a good practice is to prefix the circuit names with the full, precise name of the "Room" that is defined in the Home app so that it's not only easier to move them into the appropriate Rooms in the app, but also so that this room prefix is automatically hidden (due to the matching strings) within that Room's page.

The address is the Lutron processor address for that lighting circuit. For non-dimmable lights or switches, add the ```dimmable`` property like:

Additionally, comments can be inserted into the list using objects with only a comment property, like:

Before updating with a new JSON circuits file, test that the file is valid using something like this JSON Formatter & Validator online tool, and be sure there are no errors or even informational messages about stray commas.

Note that due to a HomeKit limitation, Homebridge limits each bridge to 149 accessories (i.e., lighting circuits). If you have more than that, you'll need to create multiple bridges to keep below this limit. In this case, separate the circuits into two or more files, one for each homebridge process.

Other Notes

The Homeworks Interactive processor was not designed for API-type of control like this, so the delays (particularly during initialization) and uncoordinated status messages output onto the the RS-232 communication may result in occasional errors in reporting current lighting levels, which can sometimes lead to incorrect status being displayed in the Apple Home application. However, these inconsistencies are typically resolved after re-visiting a single room or switching the state of that particular lighting circuit via the UI of the Home app.

This plugin was created using the Homebridge Plugin Template as a starting point.

Saratov History, Russia

Saratov is one of the oldest cities of Russia. It was established in the second half of the 16th century (precisely in 1590) along with other cities in Volga Region like Kazan and Volgograd, as part of Tsar Feodor Ivanovich’s policy of creating a centralized Russian state. But then, a long pre-history precedes Saratov history – a prehistoric connection woven through legends and corroborated by scientific evidences. Researchers have indicated that Saratov happens to be a part of the region (the Eurasian Steppes) where people took the initial steps of domesticating horses. Again Saratov, according to one legend, was the site of the legendary city of the pre-Christian era, Gelonus. Of course, there is no need to look that far – the 13th century Golden/Great Horde city of Ukek or Uvek was Saratov’s immediate-predecessor.

Saratov History: Establishment of the City to the end of 18th Century

Saratov was founded as a Russian military post. A lot of pre-planning went into setting up the whole town – buildings, mostly wooden-structures that would later be part of the town, were assembled a year in advance in a different location. When all the structures were ready, they were disassembled and transported to the actual-site to be re-assembled. This speeded up the whole process and the town was ready in a few weeks’ time. The construction of Saratov Fortress began in July 1590 and it was completed the same year. The fortress was destroyed twice in the course of the next century (first in 1616 and again in 1674) and the whole town had to be shifted.

Saratov ceased to be a military post in 1718 and this marked a new beginning in Saratov history . The town saw influx of people in huge numbers, resulting in population-growth and expansion of the boundaries. Salt production had become the chief occupation of the people and when the town became an important Salt Administration center in 1747, its importance as a trading center increased.

The last decade of the 18th century saw Saratov making remarkable progress as the provincial capital of the Saratov Province – the city not only prospered agriculturally, it also gained reputation as an industrial and trading center.

Saratov History: 19th Century Onwards

The 19th century ushered Saratov into an era of growth and development – the city became an important shipping port, it got its first railroad link and also a number of key industries. With the growing importance of Saratov, it essentially became a cosmopolitan city that boasted a rich culture.

The 20th century was far more eventful. Saratov got its first university in 1909 and by 1916 the city had at least 5 institutes where people could pursue higher studies. Year 1917 marked the beginning of the Soviet-era (that lasted till 1991). Saratov prospered immensely in this period. One of the biggest achievements of Soviet-era Saratov was the completion of the 2.8 km road-bridge spanning the Volga in 1965. Saratov’s present-significance as a cultural and scientific center owes much to the Soviet-period.

Cross the bridge to Saratov, the city that appeared practically overnight

lutron homeworks bridge

Saratov is a great place to feel the immense grandeur of the Volga River. Saratov offers an unusual collection of architecture from the pre-revolutionary and Soviet period and its large center makes for an excellent place to take an aimless walk through centuries of Russian history literally living on top of each other.

lutron homeworks bridge

By the early 1800s Saratov had grown to be a significant port city and the railroad arrived in 1870. The city experienced a boom during World War II as many factories and institutes were relocated here, although it was closed during Soviet times as it was the site of a military aircraft manufacturing plant.

lutron homeworks bridge

Surprisingly, Saratov went three full centuries before a promenade was built along the river. One of the main attractions here is a statue dedicated to the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin. Gagarin first moved to Saratov to continue his studies in 1951 at the Saratov Industrial Technical School. He studied tractors and spent his weekends volunteering at a local aviation club where he learned to fly. He also worked part time on the Volga docks.

lutron homeworks bridge

The Leonid Sobinov State Conservatory opened in 1912 at Kirova 1 not far from the entrance to the charming Park Lipki. At the time it was only the third in the country as Saratov was then the third largest city in Russia and the largest on the Volga (16th largest today).

The Nikitin Bothers Circus at the top of Kirova (away from the Volga) was the second stationary circus in Russia (the first is in Penza). This is probably the best place in town to see tigers and clowns under the same roof. Across the street is the Kryty Rynok, a covered market built in 1916. Behind the market is an example of a classic Soviet movie palace, Pobeda; it opened in 1955. If walking away from the circus towards the Volga there are well-preserved examples of proletarian communal buildings constructed in the 1920s on the left.

lutron homeworks bridge

Park Pobedy is the city’s largest and is located at about three kilometers from the Volga. It hosts the National Village of the Peoples of Saratov Region, an open-air architectural and ethnographic museum.

How to get there There are many trains to Saratov, but the daily direct from Moscow’s Paveletsky station is both comfortable and convenient. It leaves at 17:50 and arrives the next morning at 08:50. There are limited flights to Saratov, although  Saratov Airlines  flies to and from Moscow Domodedovo up to six times daily.

Where to stay Hotel Slovakia  is probably the best budget option for those seeking Volga views. A standard large Soviet-era renovated hotel, rooms start at 2600 rubles. Nearby is the beautiful St. Trinity Cathedral. A church has stood here since 1675. Also of note is the Soothe My Sorrows Church (Utoli moi pechali) at Volzhskaya St. 36. It was inspired by St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow and completed in 1906. Another good central option is  Irbis Business Hotel  at Maksima Gorkogo St. 9 with rooms starting at 2400 rubles.
