Essay on Mental Health: According to the data released by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the year 2021, one in seven people between the ages of 10 and 19 years old experiences mental sickness or disorder. Depression, anxiety, mood swings, behavioral disorders, and other mental disorders are the major reasons for illness among adolescents. As per WHO, depression is one of the leading causes of disability among human beings. Also, the organization states that individuals with extreme mental health conditions are susceptible to dying two decades before their estimated death, owing to grave physical illness caused by mental illness. 

Thus, it is essential to focus on caring for one’s and others’ mental health to avoid cases of disability and suicide.

What is Mental Health?

Mental health is an emotional and psychological state of mind. It involves how we think, feel about things, and manage the challenges in life. As students, we should take care of our mental health in the same way we take care of our physical health. Good mental health contributes to effective academic functioning, healthy social relationships, and stress management. 

Furthermore, it is important to know that mental health is a dynamic state of mind that changes over time. Mental health is influenced by genetic vulnerability, types of personality, social support, and life experiences.

Types of Mental Health Conditions

There are different types of mental health conditions. One of the most common conditions is Anxiety Disorder. In the present day and age, many people are affected by social anxiety, one of the most common anxiety disorders. Its symptoms are increased heartbeat and excessive sweating. Another type of mental health condition is impulse control and addiction disorder, in which people have uncontrollable urges to perform self-harming acts and harm others as well. Furthermore, Mood disorders like schizophrenia cause disturbances in perceptions or thinking. Lastly, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is caused by the impact of horrific events such as any sexual or physical assault, natural disaster or unexpected death of a loved one on an individual’s mind.

How does Mental Health Affect Students?

It is important to understand that mental health is very important for students because it enables them to concentrate on their studies and lead a serene life. Also, a healthy mind encourages students to explore different opportunities and learn new things.

However, students with mental illness are often seen struggling with isolation, anxiety, and issues in their personal life. Mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, etc hinder concentration in studies and hurt their social and familial relationships.

Therefore, to ensure students’ mental health, families and educational institutions must provide emotional and moral support. Recognition as well as addressing well-being not only helps the students do good again in academics but also helps the students with overall personality development.

Importance of Creating a Supportive Environment

Caring never goes to waste; rather, it helps the person recover quickly. Studies have shown that support from family and friends not only helps the student face the imbalance of mental health but also helps with emotional help. Thus, it is important to build a supportive environment that is free from any type of mental stress. This makes students feel safe and also prepares them for active learning. This is evident from a proven psychological theory that propounds that when students get a place where they are encouraged and easily understood, they can easily handle the challenges and grow with strong emotions.

Expert Advice on Mental Health

Students must receive expert advice to handle mental stress and various complexities of academics and personal challenges. Here, academic institutions should take responsibility for building an environment where students can easily reach out to the responsible authorities for guidance and solutions. Thus, educational organizations must open channels for students to express their concerns, such as setting up counselling services or creating support groups. 

Furthermore, the organization of regular mental health checkups, mental health awareness campaigns, and knowledge sessions on mental conditions in schools are also helpful in the growth of students. Also, collaboration between teachers and mental health professionals and talking to family members can help young minds deal with their challenges. 

Mental health is not a taboo, it just needs awareness and open communication. Students should practice exercises that heal the unrest of the brain. For example, many people find peace by planting trees and watering plants. Whereas, some release stress by communicating with others. Therefore, each individual should find her/their/his way of dealing with mental illness and seek help when needed for good mental health.

Mental health awareness is an important issue for all educators, who are often the first line of defense for their students. Education professionals have recognized the impact that a student's mental health has on learning and achievement, and they realize that there's a great deal that can be done to help students with mental health issues. As a high school teacher with more than 23 years of experience, I welcome the fact that mental health awareness is finally becoming an important part of a school's function and curriculum.

Seeing the Signs in My Student

A few years ago, a student in my senior class changed drastically in a short period of time. I noticed that Melina no longer did her homework, and she didn't even try on her essays. Previously meticulous in her appearance, Melina would come to school disheveled, wearing the same clothes. When I tried to speak to her, she was uncharacteristically distant and withdrawn. Because I had some training in mental health awareness, I knew Melina was in some sort of trouble.

Luckily, my school had social workers on staff who could speak to Melina and assess her issues. They discovered that Melina was depressed and suicidal, and she needed an immediate psychiatric intervention. Melina was hospitalized for a period of time, but she was able to return to my classroom a few months later. With the help of medication and therapy, she managed to graduate with her class.

Understanding the Impact

The National Alliance on Mental Illness  estimates that one in five people live with some sort of mental disorder or disease. Despite the fact that the average age of early signs of mental illness is 14, most individuals don't seek help until adulthood. Underlining the seriousness is the fact that 60 percent of high school students with mental illness don't graduate.

New York mental health experts recognized that earlier intervention could result in more positive outcomes for these students. Beginning in July 2018, New York will be the first state in the nation to require mental health education for all students.  The overall mission of New York's School Mental Health (SMH) program  is to promote healthy social, emotional, and behavioral development of students, and "break down barriers to learning so the general well-being of students, families, and school staff can be enhanced in collaboration with other comprehensive student support and services."

The SMH program supports the emotional health and academic growth of all students with the following:

  • Integrating comprehensive services and support throughout every grade level
  • Assessing mental health needs through universal, selective, and targeted interventions
  • Providing access to behavioral and mental health services and programs
  • Leveraging higher-level personnel, such as those working with the Department of Education, for necessary support and services
  • Building collaborative relationships between the school and students' families and communities

Spreading Awareness Across the Nation

Until mental health education is a mandatory aspect of all schools, teachers and administrators can work to promote awareness with their students. Key elements to shine a light on include the concept of self-care and responsibility for  one's own mental health and wellness , with an emphasis on the fact that mental health is an integral part of health, and the concept of recovery from mental illness.

Teachers and students should be provided with ways to recognize signs of developing mental health problems, and there should be opportunities around the awareness and management of mental health crises, including the risk of suicide or self-harm. Further, instruction should address the relationship between mental health, substance abuse, and other negative coping behaviors, as well as the negative impact of stigma and cultural attitudes toward mental illness.

Because teens spend most of their day at school, it just makes sense to have mental health awareness and education become part of the curriculum. When we empower students with knowledge, and encourage dialogue, students will be able to get the help they need.

M ental health issues among college students have skyrocketed . From 2013 to 2021, the number of students who reported feelings of depression increased 135 percent, and the number of those with one or more mental health problems doubled. Simply put, the well-being of our students is in jeopardy.

To deepen our understanding of this crisis, we asked 10 students to speak candidly about their mental health. We learned that the issues they face are uniquely theirs and yet collectively ours. We hope these responses will inform your teaching and encourage you to create safe classroom spaces where students feel seen and supported.

Students Share Their Mental Health Struggles—and What Support They Need

We asked these students and recent graduates, In what ways has your mental health affected your college experience, and how can professors better support you? Here’s what they had to say.

Elizabeth Ndungu

Elizabeth Ndungu, graduate student in the School of Professional Studies at Columbia University, United States: My mental health has affected me deeply, and I have sought therapy (which is a big thing for me, as I was born and raised in Africa and therapy is a “Western” concept). I’m a caregiver, so unexpected medical emergencies happen a lot, which mentally stresses me out. However, my professors have given me the time I need to perform my best. They’ve listened.

In general, I think professors can better support students by

Observing and reaching out to students if they notice a pattern of behavior.

Being kind. Giving a student a second chance may very well change their life for the better.

Being supportive. Remember students’ names, learn one unique thing about them that’s positive, or connect with them on LinkedIn or other social media platforms and show them that they have a mentor.

I think schools can better support students by

Admitting diverse students. Don’t just say it—do it. Seek out ways to make the school population more DEIA (diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility) friendly, especially at historically white colleges. Inclusivity should be everywhere.

Making DEIA initiatives a priority. If you are educating organizations’ next leaders, make sure DEIA initiatives are in each program and cohort. Each of our classes should be tied to knowledge, strategy, and DEIA and its impact.

Raising awareness around mental health. Provide onsite and remote resources for mental assistance, automate low complexity tasks that will cause stress to students, invest in your staff and resources, and ensure that they are happy. Because dealing with unhappy staff will make unhappy students.

Pritish Dakhole

Pritish Dakhole, sophomore studying engineering at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India: Mental health is still stigmatized in India. We do not have easy access to therapy sessions, and it is a difficult topic to talk about with family. Thankfully, the scenario is changing.

I have been affected both positively and negatively by my mental health. Positively, because I have become more open-minded and perceptive. Negatively, because it has drained my will to continue, made me tired from all the overthinking, and made me turn to harmful addictions to distract myself from the pain.

Professors and schools could provide better support through

Webinars and meetings that make students aware of the issues they face and how to tackle them.

Group sessions—preferably anonymous—to remove fear.

Feedback systems so that the college is made aware of the problems that lead to a bad mental state.

Flexible education systems that allow students to take breaks during periods of excessive burnout.

Ocean Ronquillo-Morgan

Ocean Ronquillo-Morgan, Class of ’21, studied computer science and business administration at the University of Southern California, United States: In February 2021, I called 911 twice in the span of two weeks. I thought I was dying. I felt confused, felt like my body was about to give way, then I called the paramedics. They hooked me up to an EKG and checked my pulse. It was the first time in my life that I experienced panic attacks.

I don’t think anything else could have been done at the classroom level besides extending deadlines in extenuating circumstances. That’s the unfortunate nature of post-education institutions—you still need to make it “fair” for all students.

Alberto Briones

Alberto Briones, Class of ’22, studied operations and information management at Northern Illinois University, United States: Mental health can be a touchy subject. I have experienced depression and anxiety, but just thinking about all the things I could miss in life if I gave up is what gave me the strength to keep going.

Something professors can do to support students’ mental health is give students time to study between tests. Sometimes professors schedule tests on the same day, and suddenly students must study for three or four exams, all in the same day. It becomes overwhelming and they have to prioritize what tests they need to study more for.

Anjali Bathra Ravikumar

Anjali Bathra Ravikumar, sophomore studying management information systems at The University of Texas at Austin, United States: It is stressful to be an international student at a competitive university in a competitive major. I often find myself having breakdowns and calling my parents in a panic about my future. The relatively restricted job opportunities because of my visa status and uncertainty about whether I’ll be able to forge the career that I want are major reasons behind this.

I have noticed that a lot of my international-student friends are constantly hustling as well, since we feel that we always need to be 10 steps ahead and cannot afford to slow down.

The best thing that a professor can do for me is provide as much guidance as possible in their respective field. Most of my professors have done that. This helps weed out some of the doubts that I have about potential career paths and gives me better clarity about the future. I feel that I cannot ask for more since I don’t expect everyone to be informed of what life is like for an international student.

Schools, on the other hand, can do a lot for us, such as tailor career management resources, offer international student group counseling (I attended one session and it was very liberating), provide financial relief (this is the absolute best thing that can be done for us) during rough times such as COVID-19. For example, when millions of international students had to take online classes during the pandemic, schools could have offered reduced tuition rates.

Something else that can seem small but goes a long way is using inclusive language in university announcements and communication. Most of the emails that we receive from the university feel more tailored to or are directly addressing in-state students (especially when major changes were happening at the beginning of the pandemic), and it is natural for us to feel left out. It might be a simple thing, but a couple of lines at the end of each email announcement with links addressing our specific concerns would make a lot of difference to us since we wouldn’t have to do our own research to figure out what it means for us.

EDUCATE YOURSELF BEFORE DIVING INTO MENTAL HEALTH TALKS

Starting a mental health conversation with students before we are prepared can be harmful. Here’s some advice from “ It’s Time We Talk About Mental Health in Business Classrooms ” by Bahia El Oddi, founder of Human Sustainability Inside Out, and Carin-Isabel Knoop, executive director of the Case Research and Writing Group at Harvard Business School, on how to get ready for these critical conversations.

Learn to talk about mental health. Enhance your mental health literacy through free resources such as the Learn Mental Health Literacy course (specifically for educators), the World Health Organization , and the National Institute of Mental Health . Consult the CDC for language about mental and behavioral health and the American Psychiatry Association for ways to describe individuals presenting with potential mental health disorders .

Reflect on your own biases. Consider how your own story—being raised by a parent with a mental health disorder, for example—may influence how you react and relate to others. Determine your level of openness to discussing the struggles you or your loved ones face or have faced. While it is possible to discuss mental health in the classroom without these anecdotes or personal connections, the courage to be open about your own past can have a transformative effect on classroom discussion.

Understand students may need extra support. Make yourself accessible and approachable to your students from the start so you can establish trust early. Advise them to seek professional help when necessary.

Nick Neral, Class of ’18, studied marketing management at the University of Akron, United States: At the end of my first year of college, I decided to stop participating in Division I athletics and my mental health plummeted. After calling our campus counseling center and waiting six weeks for my first intake appointment, I was told I couldn’t start therapy for two more months, but I could get medication within a couple of days.

After getting prescriptions for an SSRI and Xanax, I never heard from another clinician at my school again. They had no clue if I got the meds, if I took them, how I was doing, and whether I was on campus every day.

When my mental health was at its poorest, I was very disconnected from my classes. I went to, I think, five or six out of 30 finance classes I had during the semester.

I think professors are in this mindset that 20 percent of the class will naturally excel, a majority will do well enough, and a small chunk probably can’t be saved. Sometimes we don’t need saving in the classroom, we just need professors looking out for our well-being. There’s more to the story when a kid doesn’t show up to 80 percent of their classes.

At times, I learned how to push through my feelings and submerge myself in my schoolwork, although I should have unpacked my trauma and handled it in a more mature way.

Students need an environment that encourages inclusive, candid dialogue around how we are feeling. There’s a correlation between social and mental health to overall success in our respective careers.

Alek Nybro, Class of ’21, studied marketing at St. Edward’s University, United States: Anxiety shows up differently for every person. I consider myself to be high functioning. This means when the going gets tough, I dig down and keep pushing, but often to extents that aren’t physically, emotionally, or mentally healthy.

In school, I didn’t know when to step back and take a break. That’s probably my biggest regret about my college years.

Professors could help students by making everything iterative. There shouldn’t be a final grade for assignments or projects. If you want to go back and revise something for a better grade, you should be able to do so.

Patrick Mandiraatmadja

Patrick Mandiraatmadja, first-year graduate student studying technology management at Columbia University, United States: There are times when I have felt overwhelmed by the number of deadlines and exams crammed into a specific week or few days. I always want to put in my best effort to study, which can lead to less sleep and more anxiety. Then college becomes more about getting through assignments and exams just for the sake of it and less about the learning.

Because of the amount of work or busy work, I have less opportunity to go out and do the things that make me feel alive and excited about life—whether it’s being with friends, exploring my city, exercising, involving myself with professional and social networks outside of school, or simply taking a walk and enjoying my day.

Students want to know that our professors and schools care. Part of that is providing an environment where we can talk about our personal struggles. I also think professors and schools should update the policies on homework, assignments, and exams. Sometimes we may push through and neglect our mental health, not taking the time to care for ourselves, just to get through that homework or finish that exam. The added pressure causes us increased anxiety; it’s no wonder today’s young people are some of the most anxious and unmotivated compared to previous generations.

What We Learned from These Students

These students and young alumni offer an honest glimpse into how mental health struggles have affected their college experiences. Although every student faces their own unique—and sometimes complicated—challenges, we are learning that sometimes the best response is the simplest one.

We must show our students that we care. So lend an empathetic ear, offer that deadline extension, and turn your classroom into a safe haven for open discussion. Your students need it.

Mental health knowledge and awareness among university students in Bangladesh

Negative attitudes toward mental illness and treatment are attributed to a lack of or inaccurate mental health knowledge. We aimed to assess the current mental health knowledge and awareness among Bangladeshi university students and identified socio-demographic factors that affect them. Between February and April of 2021, a cross-sectional study of 2036 university students in Bangladesh was conducted. Two different questionnaires (i.e., knowledge and awareness) were developed to assess mental health knowledge and awareness. The two outcome variables in this study were mental health knowledge level and awareness level. The cut-off value was taken as 80% of the total scores of both the knowledge and awareness scales and divided into higher and lower groups. Data were analyzed using different descriptive statistical tools and binary logistic regression model. We found more than half (62.1%) of the students had higher knowledge, and 85.1% of the students had a higher awareness of mental health problems. Female students (OR 1.41, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.15–1.72) and students managing their expenses by personal income and family support were significantly positively associated with the high knowledge of the mental health (OR 1.79, 95% CI: 1.40–2.29). Similarly, age (OR 1.47, 95% CI: 1.01–2.14) was significantly associated with high awareness. Good mental health was significantly negatively associated with the high knowledge (OR 0.72, 95% CI: 0.6–0.87) and positively associated with the high awareness (OR 1.48, 95% CI: 1.15–1.91). Although mental health awareness is high among Bangladeshi university students, knowledge of mental health is insufficient. As a result, it is essential to comprehend the gaps in knowledge and awareness of mental health disorders, as well as how they are addressed.

1. Introduction

The mental health of university students is becoming a growing problem throughout the world [ 1 ]. After graduating from higher secondary school (high school in some developed countries), students may encounter a variety of issues (e.g., dormitory life, study stress, lack of time management, unhealthy eating habits, sleeping disorders, smoking, problematic internet usage, and sedentary behavior) in their new academic setting [ 2 ]. During this period of transition, students struggle to deal with the intellectual and social obstacles of university studies, which is vital for their preparation for professional jobs through the development of professional knowledge and experience [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]. Even, the development of an autonomous personal life requires various psycho-social and psychological adjustments for most undergraduate students [ 6 ]. Moreover, the university environment may possess a lot of surprises and sometimes can be unbearable and bring unexpected problems for some fresher students, and they may lack the psychological resilience to deal with such situations [ 3 , 7 ].

As a result, after a given period, students may experience severe stress, anxiety, self-harm, including suicidal ideation or attempt, and so on. In recent years, for example, multiple mental health-related incidents (e.g., suicidal attempts or suicide) have taken place in several universities in Bangladesh [ 5 ]. Previous research has found that university students throughout the world, not only in Bangladesh, suffer from high rates of psychological morbidity, including depression and anxiety [ 8 ]. In Australia, poor mental health was found to be marginally connected to poor test performance and subsequent university dropout. Over 44% of overseas graduate university students said that they had had an emotional or stress-related problem that had a major impact on their well-being or academic performance [ 9 ]. A study conducted in Yogyakarta, Indonesia showed that one-third of university students, for example, suffer from a diagnosable mental illness, and 64% of those who dropped out of college did so because of a mental condition [ 10 ].

Around 70%–75% of adults have mental health issues, and mental illnesses begin in adolescence or early adulthood (12–25 years) [ 11 ]. It accounts for 13% of the worldwide burden of disease as assessed by disability-adjusted life years [ 7 ]. However, it is a little lower in Bangladesh (11.2%) [ 12 ]. According to Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017, Bangladesh has a 0.2% schizophrenia incidence, compared to 0.3 % Asia and 0.3% worldwide. The estimations of epilepsy and bipolar disorder in Bangladesh are close to regional and worldwide figures [ 13 ]. Depression is more common in Bangladesh (2.8%) than in the rest of Southeast Asia (2.2%), particularly among women (3.6% vs 2.7%). In Bangladesh, women commit suicide at a greater rate than males (8.7 vs. 6.8) suicide deaths per 100,000 population. The prevalence estimates for schizophrenia and associated psychotic illnesses in the adult population from the Bangladesh household mental health survey were 1.0% and 6.7%, respectively, which is much higher than the estimation of GBD reports [ 14 , 15 ]. As a result, mental diseases are one of the top ten priority health problems in Bangladesh, as recognized by the government of Bangladesh [ 16 ].

According to the research of adolescents, increasing awareness of mental diseases led to more empathy and sensitivity toward those with mental health problems [ 17 ]. Previous research, however, indicated that public attitudes regarding persons with mental illness had not changed over the last several decades [ 18 , 19 ]. This might be due to a lack of mental health knowledge and awareness. For example, Abolfotouh's study with adults aged 18 or above in Saudi Arabia found that 87.5% of participants have lack mental health knowledge [ 20 ]. According to research conducted among students at an Indonesian university, 50.23 % were knowledgeable about mental health [ 21 ]. Even among medical students, in their early years, a study identified significant knowledge and attitude inadequacies [ 22 ].

Insufficient knowledge and associated stigma affect mental health [ 23 ]. Moreover, lack of knowledge of psychiatric diseases may impact stigmatizing attitudes toward mental diseases [ 24 ] or create a barrier to the delivery of mental health care [ 25 ], while engagement with mentally ill persons may result in positive attitudes and enlightened perspectives. Due to insufficient knowledge, mental health problems are not often seen as a health issue, and they are rarely given the utmost attention in healthcare delivery. These problems are more prevalent in low and medium-income nations than economically developed ones [ 26 ]. It is shocking how common depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms are among university students.

In the US, national epidemiological research has found that over a half of college students tested to fit the criteria for mental disease, but only about a 1⁄4 sought treatment [ 27 ]. Another study found that almost 70%–80% of young adults do not get the treatment they need all over the world [ 27 ]. It indicates that undergraduate students' psychological morbidity is a neglected public health issue with important consequences [ 28 ]. As a result, undergraduate education is a crucial period in a student's life, and many people consider it crucial for creating systems and intervention approaches that can help prevent mental illnesses [ 8 , 29 ].

This emphasizes the need for primary and secondary preventive strategies, as well as the creation of necessary and suitable support services for this particular group [ 8 ]. Therefore, mental health studies are required to identify the prevalence of mental health knowledge and awareness among university students to establish targeted initiatives to address such prevalences [ 11 ] and awareness through anti-stigma campaigns and public education via schools and the media are crucial [ 20 , 22 ]. Although previously, one study by Nazim et. al., conducted in a rural area of Bangladesh, investigated the level of awareness, knowledge, and help-seeking attitudes and behaviors among adults regarding mental health disorders [ 11 ]. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has been conducted in Bangladesh to assess overall mental health knowledge and awareness among university students. Thus, our objective is to evaluate mental health knowledge and awareness status among university students in Bangladesh and assess a variety of socio-demographic parameters that might affect them.

2.1. Study population, data source and sample size

We conducted a cross-sectional study of 2036 (1379 male and 657 female) university students of Bangladesh between February and April 2021. The optimum sample size for this cross-sectional study was calculated approximately 2036 by applying the following sample size formula for our study where P = 0.5 was assumed as population proportion was unknown, and margin of error was set as 0.025.

We collected data from five different schools of discipline, i.e., applied science, arts, business administration, life science, and physical science of 96 public and private universities in Bangladesh. Most university students in Bangladesh study in one of these five schools. As a result, we picked these schools for our study. Then students were selected from the schools according to the proportional allocation. Moreover, we excluded medical, public health, and psychology department students because they might learn necessary pieces of knowledge about mental health in their academic curriculum. We conducted an online questionnaire survey (Appendix-1). There are 155 universities in Bangladesh (52 public and 103 private universities) [ 30 ]. During the data collecting period, a strict lockdown was imposed all over the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, we conducted an online questionnaire survey (Appendix-1). The online questionnaire survey is convenient, cheaper, and time-saving [ 31 , 32 ]. To ensure that our sample is representative of the population, we contacted students of all the universities in Bangladesh and requested them to fill up the questionnaire. After collecting our estimated sample size (2036), we found that the collected samples covered 96 universities (39 public and 57 private universities), which was approximately two-thirds of the total number of universities in Bangladesh and ensure the representativeness (Appendix 1).

2.2. Ethics approval and consent to participate

The study's aims and purposes were thoroughly explained to the respondents before the data collection and consent were taken from all participating students. Collected data was kept safe and participants' anonymity and data confidentiality were assured. The ethical clearance was approved by the Biostatistics Research Ethical Review Committee of the Department of Statistics, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, Bangladesh (no. sta/2021/7/Mehran_Ovi/02). It was carried out in compliance with the ethical codes stated in the 1964 Helsinki Declaration and its subsequent revisions. Moreover, respondents' concerns regarding the research were clarified, and misconceptions were resolved. Respondents were assured that their participation in the research was completely voluntary and that they might quit at any moment.

2.3. Study instruments

We had developed a four-section questionnaire to describe the demographic characteristics, knowledge, and awareness of mental health among students in Bangladeshi universities and validated the questionnaire by two expert psychometricians. We have also used Goldberg's GHQ-12 (General Health Questionnaire) questionnaire items for assessing participants' mental health conditions [ 33 , 34 ]. From earlier studies [ 21 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 ], twenty-four questions for assessing mental health knowledge and twelve questions for testing mental health awareness and seven questions for measuring belief towards mental health were employed. We collected the questionnaire items from those studies and validated the correct answers by checking them. The questions were designed to highlight a list of issues on an understanding of mental health knowledge concerning mental diseases and social stigma or other components impacting mental health (like ADHD, OCD, etc.). Students were able to understand the multiple components of mental health knowledge. Without some positive questions, especially “OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) is one of the psychological problems”, “ADHD or lack of confidence is one of the psychological problems”, “Children of mentally ill patients may also develop mental illness”, “Psychological problems can develop during or after pregnancy”, and one reverse-coded question (“Most mental disorders cannot be cured”), more than 80% of participants answered the remaining questions properly. It indicates satisfying mental health knowledge of university students in multidimensional perspectives.

Questionnaire items were slightly modified to use the appropriate language for the target population, and a translation to Bangla was added to each item. Participants were asked to respond to the statements on a five-point Likert scale as follows: strongly agree (=1), through neutral (=3), to strongly disagree (=5). A pilot study was conducted with 56 respondents to examine reliability. Then the finalized questionnaires were distributed among the participants. 2055 participants completed and submitted the questionnaire, of which 2036 were useable. The resultant pilot research data was not included. Some questions were constructed negatively for analytical reasons; their replies were reverse coded so that we could assess the overall mental health knowledge and awareness.

2.4. Outcome variables

Each statement within the knowledge and awareness domains was graded on a scale of one to five. A higher score indicates a higher knowledge of mental health. The knowledge scale had a total possible score ranging from 24 to 120 points and the awareness scale from 12 to 60 points, respectively. Based on the total of these values, a knowledge and awareness score variable was created and used as an outcome variable. As the knowledge and awareness scores of the participants did not follow the normal distribution, the scores were categorized using the 80 percent cut-off score, which in this instance was 96 for knowledge and 48 for awareness. Similar cut-off values were taken in different previous studies [ 39 , 40 , 41 ]. Therefore, a score ≥96 indicates a higher level of knowledge, while a score <96 indicates a lower level of knowledge. Similarly, ≥48 scores in awareness indicate the higher awareness and <48 indicates the lower awareness, respectively.

2.5. Explanatory variables

Through literature review, the socioeconomic variables, i.e. participants' gender, age [ 11 , 21 , 24 ], university type, academic year, sources of personal expenses, and mental well-being were included in this study. Participants’ age was divided into two groups (17–22, and 23 years old or above). For university types, two general types were used for classification: public and private universities. The sources of expenses of the participants were factored in as personal income, support from family, and both. Mental health well-being was assessed using a 12-item version of the widely used General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), a self-administered assessment tool intended for use in mental health screening to identify the severity of a mental problem [ 33 , 34 ].

2.6. Statistical analysis

Descriptive statistics (e.g., frequencies, percentages, and means) were used to describe the demographic characteristics of the respondents. A binary logistic regression model was used to analyze the effects of socio-demographic and other variables on outcome variables, i.e., the degree of knowledge or awareness. The logistic regression results were used to determine 95% confidence intervals of the estimates. A p-value of less than 0.05 was regarded as significant. All analyses were performed using SPSS Version 25 (Chicago, IL), R version 4.0.3 and Microsoft Excel. We have found standardized Cronbach's alpha for checking the reliability of two scales, i.e., knowledge and awareness, at 0.77 and 0.85, respectively.

3.1. Demographic characteristics

The mean knowledge question scores for different demographic categories of the participants were shown in Table 1 . A total of 2036 residents completed the questionnaires excluding 177 respondents from medical colleges with a response rate of 96.56% with a response rate of 95.1%, and their demographic characteristics were presented in ( Table 1 ). Male students comprised the majority of participants (67.7%) and followed by female students (32.3%). The fourth year had the highest of participants (22.9%), while the fifth year had the lowest percentage (11.9%). The majority (83.4%) of students heard about mental health. More than half of the students heard about World Sleep Day and Suicide Prevention Day (51.2% and 52.2%, respectively).

Most of the respondents (61.64%) managed the expenses by support from family, while 17.7% of students managed by personal income and rest of the of students (20.63%) managed in both ways.

The data also represented that, applied science had the highest rate (41.66%) of participation among the other disciplines. Moreover, the majority of the students (78.8%) attended from public universities, and more than half of the students (62.8%) were less than 22 years old ( Table 1 ).

3.2. Knowledge about mental health

The correct response rate of the 24 items of knowledge questionnaire ranged from 31.83% to 96.56%, with a mean value of 32.1%. The computed knowledge score ranged from 0 to 24 and the mean (SD) value was 4.07 (0.79).

Figure 1 shows that a total of 62.1% of respondents have higher knowledge, and 85.1% have a higher awareness of mental illness.

Of the 24 questions, the items that were most likely to be answered correctly were item 19 to 24 ranging from 90.77% to 96.56%, with the highest percentage item 24 “Family member can help mentally sick people” (96.56%); item 23, “Doing something enjoyable helps to improve mental health” (97.6%); item 22, “A person with depression feels very miserable” (94.45%); item 21, “Mentally ill patients do not mean always sad” (94%); item 20, “Middle-aged individuals are unlikely to develop psychological problems” (92.43%); item 19, “Because of bullying or abuse one can develop psychological problems∗” (90.67%). Items with the lowest correct response rates were item 1, “Children of mentally ill patients may also develop mental illness” (31.83%); item 2, “Most mental disorders cannot be cured∗” (67.14%) and item 3, “ADHD or lack of confidence is one of the psychological problems” (68.42%). The correct response rate of each item is presented in Table 2 .

Table 2 shows descriptive statistics including the mean and standard deviation of knowledge items. Reading throughout the item 1 (“Children of mentally ill patients may also develop mental illness”), one can see that the average total score of 2.92 (out of 5) for the first question in Table 2 is less than one third (31.83%) of respondents strongly agreed with this item.

Figure 2 represents the overall frequency of the Likert scale responses of the respondents, and it comes up with the maximum number of “agree” responses as well as some “disagree” and “strongly disagree” responses.

Table 3 and Figure 3 shows the results of binary logistic regression analysis of participants' knowledge levels on mental health. Gender, mental health status and sources of personal expenses were significantly associated with the outcome variable (i.e., knowledge of the participants). Female students had 1.41 (95% CI: 1.153–1.722, P < 0.01) times and students having good mental health were 0.72 (95% CI: .60–.87, P < 0.01) times more knowledge than their counter parts. Moreover, students who managed their personal cost by personal income had 1.11 (95% CI: .87–1.42) times and students who managed their cost by both personal income and family assistantship had 1.79 (95% CI: 1.40 - 2.29, P < 0.01) times more knowledge than students who managed their cost by family support only. Surprisingly, the OR for the participants with good mental health was lower than the reference category (i.e., poor mental health) with an odds ratio of 0.72 (95% CI: 0.60–0.87, P < 0.01) and we found that there was a significant association between knowledge and good mental health. Students’ age, academic year and university type were not significantly associated with their mental health knowledge.

3.3. Awareness about mental health

Table 4 provides a brief overview of the answers to the awareness question, which presents 12 questions defining mental health awareness. The table summarizes the on-scale replies. The first item (“By coming into contact with or living with a mentally ill person, one becomes mentally ill.”) was a reversely coded question and had the lowest percentage of correct response (78.40%), and the last one (“If a friend of mine developed a mental disorder, I would offer her/him support”) had the highest percentage of correct response (98.20%). Although the first three items were ranging from 78.40% to 87.0%, the rest of the questions show above 93% correct response (“strongly agree”) rate. In particular, the last 6 items presented the strong bonding between friends and family, which is such a crucial factor in developing mental health awareness and all these items are presented in Table 4 .

Figure 4 shows that the majority of the respondents had agreed with the awareness questionnaire items excluding the first item.

Table 5 and Figure 5 presents the results of binary logistic regression analysis of participants' awareness levels on mental health. Participants' age and mental health status were found significantly associated with the outcome variable (i.e., awareness level of the participants). Age >22 students were 1.47 (95% CI: 1.01 - 2.14, P < 0.05) times more likely to be aware of mental health than age <22 students. Moreover, students with good mental health status were 1.48 (95% CI: 1.15–1.91, P < 0.01) times more likely to be aware of mental health than students with poor mental health status. Gender, university type, academic year and sources of personal expenses were not found significant in Table 5 . Participants’ self-mental health status (i.e., good mental health status) was highly associated with their awareness level of mental health.

3.4. beliefs towards mental health

Table 6 describes the descriptive analysis of the self-belief section. It shows us some interesting results regarding our beliefs towards mental health. A majority of students voted that social and environmental pollution factor (74.9% and 52.9% respectively) are the main impactful causes of being affected by psychiatric problems.

Interestingly, almost a quarter of the students (32.8%) still think that bad luck or fate is the main cause of most psychological problems, 28.9% still have a belief in black magic or evil spirits and their effect on mental illness, 17.7% of students believe that marriage can cure mental illness, 19.1% of students think that depression is not a true mental disorder, and 12.2% students believe that mentally ill patients are the burden on the family or society.

Appropriate treatment for mental health patient had come up with the findings of mental health beliefs. Nearly 47.5% of students believe in modern psychiatric treatment, 41.6% students believe both in religious rituals and Modern psychiatric treatment. On the other hand, 7.3% students believe religious rituals only. The rest of the items had tiny percentages, which were not as impactful as we expected ( Table 7 ).

4. Discussion

University students’ mental health is a global public health concern [ 1 ]. Insufficient awareness and related stigma have a negative impact on mental health [ 23 ]. Furthermore, a lack of knowledge of psychiatric diseases may lead to stigmatizing mental illnesses [ 24 ] or hinder mental health care delivery [ 25 ]. Globally, mental health research has attracted researchers' attention, yet it is understudied in Bangladesh. There is a knowledge gap in Bangladesh since no research has been conducted on university students' mental health knowledge and awareness. Hence, the current study assessed the mental health knowledge and awareness of Bangladeshi university students.

According to our findings, more than one-third of the participants lacked mental health knowledge. This finding is consistent with the results of the study by Despande et al., who found that only 65.3% of students demonstrated adequate knowledge [ 42 ]. However, the situation was not as bad as compared in other countries. Puspitasari et al., for example, found that 49.65% of students at a public university in West Java, Indonesia had poor mental health knowledge [ 21 ]. Unfortunately, despite more than a century of organized psychiatry and revolutionary advances in the etiology and treatment of mental disorders, university students still lack knowledge about mental health, highlighting the importance of increased educational efforts to eliminate engrained myths and misconceptions.

Regarding mental health awareness, consistent with the previous study conducted in Delhi [ 43 ], we have also found that the majority of the participants (85.1%) had a higher level of awareness. Contrary to our findings, Uddin et al. found [ 11 ] that more than half of the respondents were not aware of any mental health conditions. That being said, the findings, based on the data from a Bangladeshi rural district, may not be truly representative of a national perspective. Moreover, our targeted population was only university students and that could be a reason for the variation.

Almost all the participants had a belief in modern psychiatric treatment. However, along with modern treatment, almost half of the total respondents also had a general faith in both religious rituals and modern psychiatric treatment. Participants believed that religion is a psychological and social component that can either be a strong healing resource or be closely linked to psychopathology, which is not uncommon. For example, according to empirical research, religion is one of the first resources individuals and their loved ones turn to when they experience severe disease [ 44 ]. This might be due to various reasons. In a European study, they found that religious rituals and practices provide compassion in stressful situations [ 45 ]. Another study found that, the more the religiousness the lower the mental illness [ 46 ]. However, a few alarmingly divergent opinions have emerged in numerous studies. A study taken in Novosibirsk, Bratislava, and Germany, for example, discovered that a high portion of the general population considered mental illness as a form of divine punishment for wrongdoings committed [ 47 ]. Furthermore, we found that almost one in every three participants believed in the impact of black magic or evil spiritual effects and had faith in the effect of bad luck on psychological problems. This finding is consistent with some studies [ 48 ]. A strong faith in this concept may lead to a rejection of established mental health treatment and a turn toward more indigenous and traditional healing approaches. Therefore, it is important to inquire into Bangladeshi faiths about the etiology and treatment of mental illness.

Furthermore, more than half of the students believed that environmental and social factors were the main causes of psychological problems (74.9% and 52.9%, respectively). These findings are in line with some studies. For example, death, divorce, break-up, changing schools, and the financial crisis have a significant relationship with poor mental health [ 49 ]. Similarly, prenatal exposure to viruses, poisons, alcohol, and/or drugs, nutritional inadequacies, chronic medical illnesses, presence of pollutants, high temperatures, and rural geographical location are examples of environmental factors that are liable for bad mental health [ 50 , 51 , 52 ].

In this research, age was significantly associated with knowledge (P < 0.05) which is consistent with the other studies [ 21 , 22 , 24 ]. Those studies have shown that there is insufficient knowledge among varsity students about psychiatric illnesses in the early stages of education. It implies that the older the students are, the more they know about mental health.

Female respondents were more likely to be in the higher knowledge category than male respondents. Knowledge was also shown to be associated with mental health and the sources of personal expenses. Respondents who spent both family support and personal money on personal expenses were more likely to have a better level of knowledge than those who were dependent on complete family support. Usually, many students from middle-class families in Bangladesh get a chance to continue higher studies at the university level.

To improve university students' mental health understanding, it is vital to get insight into the gaps in perspectives, information, and awareness around mental health disorders to combat the complicated mental health of Bangladeshi university students, as well as their treatment procedure and how they are addressed. Students must be taught how to identify certain mental problems and how to respond effectively to them.

5. Conclusion

Despite of having awareness of mental health issues, the mental health knowledge of Bangladeshi university students is poor. Their low level of knowledge of mental illness prevents them from properly recognizing these problems and offering support. Female and students who are financially self-sufficient have more knowledge, whereas students over the age of 22 have more awareness. Both knowledge and awareness about mental health were influenced by the good mental health status of the respondents. Interestingly, a vital number of participants still believe in superstitious acts such as black magic or religious rituals rather than modern psychiatric treatment. The findings from this research will help researchers, academics, and students in Bangladesh develop new ways to tackle Bangladeshi university students' problematic mental health. Therefore, more efforts are required to raise awareness of mental health problem as well as more university-level intervention programs to educate the students on the proper attribution of mental diseases. As a result, educational initiatives may need to be group specific, with a focus on those who are female, younger, and underprivileged.

6. Strengths and limitations of the study

This is the first large study to evaluate knowledge and awareness of mental health among Bangladeshi university students. The data for this study came from a wide range of public and private universities in Bangladesh. The few studies conducted among Bangladeshi university students have concentrated on a particular segment of mental health issues rather than on the broader topic of mental health. As far as we have studied, this is the first research among university students in Bangladesh that analyzes or compares the belief questionnaire items towards mental health. Our sample size (2036) was also comparatively larger than that of earlier studies in Bangladesh that focused on university-level students [ 53 , 54 ]. Moreover, we found standardized Cronbach's alpha 0.77 and 0.85 respectively, which is quite high for assessing the reliability of two scales, namely knowledge and awareness. It revealed that the internal consistency of our questionnaire is quite good, which might contribute to the correct recognition of next items on the questionnaire. Despite its important findings, the research has several limitations. The study was a cross-sectional design, which prevented examination of the chronological sequence of mental health knowledge and awareness, and causal associations cannot be identified. Furthermore, we were unable to implement the appropriate sampling technique due to a number of unavoidable circumstances such as non-response, difficulties of reaching remote areas etc.

Another limitation is the absence of comparison between our questionnaire and other multidimensional scales designed to evaluate knowledge and awareness of mental health problems. Since psychometric testing is such a method which is dependent on sample [ 55 ], thus it is hard to compare the psychometric characteristics of the Bangladeshi version of the mental health knowledge and awareness questionnaire with the scales used in students outside of Bangladesh because our questionnaire was developed and used exclusively in Bangladesh. The feasibility and psychometric properties of the questionnaire might be compared to other measures in the same study in future research. However, the study's results may be useful for future Bangladeshi youth research or treatments.

7. Recommendations

Education is a powerful tool for increasing knowledge and decreasing negative views regarding mental health problems. Gaining insight into the gaps in views, knowledge, and awareness surrounding mental health problems and how they are managed is necessary to enhance university students' knowledge of their mental health. Thus, it is necessary to educate students on how to recognize specific mental disorders and, as a result, how to respond appropriately to them. Although, at present, there is no nationally recognized program to raise awareness among the public or university students, a multi-disciplinary working group comprised of representatives from government ministries, mental health organizations, and advocacy organizations collaborated to plan a National Mental Health Policy. The Working Group also created a National Mental Health Strategic Plan 2020–2030, intending to implement it over the next decade through 5-year action plans. The Policy and Plan demand for mental health services to be integrated across all levels of the public health care system. Through the improvement of the current health care system, mental health programs will be incorporated into the primary health care system. Decentralization will be accomplished by providing mental health care to divisions, districts, and smaller administrative areas (Upazila or thana) in rural and urban regions [ 16 ]. It will be helpful to increase community awareness. Moreover, some non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are attempting to raise awareness about mental health by reducing stigma, raising awareness about mental disorders, and promoting mental health literacy. These groups use radio, television, print, and electronic media to spread their messages. Thus, the Bangladesh government should implement similar programs to increase awareness and ensure the required support. Similarly, educators, health workers, and academic institutions must implement health promotions regarding mental health problems and their treatment to remove misconceptions and enhance mental health care and treatment.

As schools confront a youth mental health crisis, they must engage students in finding solutions, said Rick Yang, 17, a senior at Scarsdale High School in New York.

The Jed Foundation (JED), an organization that promotes mental health and suicide prevention for teens and young adults, honored Yang as one of two recipients of its 2024 Student Voice of Mental Health Award in recognition of his state and local advocacy work.

Yang, who is Chinese American, was inspired to action when he saw the barriers a fellow Asian American friend faced in seeking mental health treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. He attributes some of those barriers to the “model minority myth,” a term that refers to cultural stereotypes of Asian American students as high-achieving and academically gifted—a perception that may cause some adults and peers to overlook their needs.

He later advocated for wellness centers in his school district , and he co-founded “Frontiers of Fulfillment,” a group that provides online coaching for student leaders to advocate for policies like excused school absences for mental health.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

How did your experience during the COVID-19 pandemic influence your advocacy?

I was pretty isolated during [the beginning of] the pandemic. As an incoming freshman, I would say that my transition from middle school to high school wasn’t the greatest. I started high school half remote and half in-person, and it was pretty surreal to live in a world where I kind of stuck in my room most of the time.

I was pretty depressed, locked in my room, playing every video game you could possibly imagine. And sometimes I was even unable to eat dinner with my family. And I think it was certainly that experience, coupled with what I went through with my friend, that showed me that student mental health was a real concern that needed to be addressed.

My friend and I would FaceTime every night. She was depressed and wanted to seek help, but her parents wouldn’t let her at first. They eventually did, and she was actually diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Now she’s doing great; she’s thriving now.

My hypothesis is that—coming from a relatively high-achieving community with a lot of Asian Americans—the model minority myth prevented [her family] from seeking help. She’s a good student, and they didn’t want her to be perceived as weak.

How does your cultural identity as a Chinese American inform your work?

Oftentimes, culture and mental health are interconnected. When we approach mental health challenges in a certain community, I think it’s important to understand how the people in that community have grown up.

I try to highlight the diversity among Asian Americans because we are obviously not all the same. But a lot of us have encountered the model minority myth, even through subtle microaggressions in the hallways. I try to promote education among adults, including teachers, to break down some of the barriers that might keep students from seeking care.

How can schools more effectively address student mental health?

Mental health supports need to be comprehensive in order to effectively reach students. That means all students should be considered, supported, and protected. What works for one student may not help another. There is no one-size-fits-all approach.

What I admire about the Jed Foundation is [its] comprehensive approach to mental health promotion and suicide prevention. It recognizes that there are multiple areas of well-being—like learning about life skills, or having a counseling center—that can make a difference in someone’s life.

Ultimately, I think schools need to listen to the students themselves.

How did you advocate for student mental health in your school district?

The main initiative I started is called SchoolSight. In 2021, I realized the stress students faced at Scarsdale High School needed to be addressed. I attended a conference with Congressman Jamal Bowman where I essentially crafted a proposal to implement universal school-based wellness centers in Westchester County, which eventually blossomed into a countywide initiative.

The response was overwhelmingly enthusiastic. I began creating blueprints for introducing these [centers] in schools—universal wellness spaces for all students—starting with a pilot in my high school. So far, I’ve secured over $125,000 in grant funding to develop these spaces. They include things like de-stress zones with beanbags and yoga balls, board games, and places to study privately. Eventually, I’d like to see this scaled up to other districts.

What do you want educators to know about student mental health?

If we genuinely want to make a difference, we must not only allow but actively encourage young people to speak up. We must create environments where young people feel safe to express their thoughts, struggles, and ideas and treat them as equal partners. It fosters a sense of ownership and empowerment among the youth when they see their ideas and feedback being taken seriously.

I think school administrators, policymakers, community leaders must not only try to create platforms for youth to express their views, but they need to actually use that input in decision-making. Co-creation and agency are essential for young people to feel supported.

The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness Jonathan Haidt Allen Lane (2024)

Two things need to be said after reading The Anxious Generation . First, this book is going to sell a lot of copies, because Jonathan Haidt is telling a scary story about children’s development that many parents are primed to believe. Second, the book’s repeated suggestion that digital technologies are rewiring our children’s brains and causing an epidemic of mental illness is not supported by science. Worse, the bold proposal that social media is to blame might distract us from effectively responding to the real causes of the current mental-health crisis in young people.

Haidt asserts that the great rewiring of children’s brains has taken place by “designing a firehose of addictive content that entered through kids’ eyes and ears”. And that “by displacing physical play and in-person socializing, these companies have rewired childhood and changed human development on an almost unimaginable scale”. Such serious claims require serious evidence.

Haidt supplies graphs throughout the book showing that digital-technology use and adolescent mental-health problems are rising together. On the first day of the graduate statistics class I teach, I draw similar lines on a board that seem to connect two disparate phenomena, and ask the students what they think is happening. Within minutes, the students usually begin telling elaborate stories about how the two phenomena are related, even describing how one could cause the other. The plots presented throughout this book will be useful in teaching my students the fundamentals of causal inference, and how to avoid making up stories by simply looking at trend lines.

Hundreds of researchers, myself included, have searched for the kind of large effects suggested by Haidt. Our efforts have produced a mix of no, small and mixed associations. Most data are correlative. When associations over time are found, they suggest not that social-media use predicts or causes depression, but that young people who already have mental-health problems use such platforms more often or in different ways from their healthy peers 1 .

These are not just our data or my opinion. Several meta-analyses and systematic reviews converge on the same message 2 – 5 . An analysis done in 72 countries shows no consistent or measurable associations between well-being and the roll-out of social media globally 6 . Moreover, findings from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study, the largest long-term study of adolescent brain development in the United States, has found no evidence of drastic changes associated with digital-technology use 7 . Haidt, a social psychologist at New York University, is a gifted storyteller, but his tale is currently one searching for evidence.

Of course, our current understanding is incomplete, and more research is always needed. As a psychologist who has studied children’s and adolescents’ mental health for the past 20 years and tracked their well-being and digital-technology use, I appreciate the frustration and desire for simple answers. As a parent of adolescents, I would also like to identify a simple source for the sadness and pain that this generation is reporting.

A complex problem

There are, unfortunately, no simple answers. The onset and development of mental disorders, such as anxiety and depression, are driven by a complex set of genetic and environmental factors. Suicide rates among people in most age groups have been increasing steadily for the past 20 years in the United States. Researchers cite access to guns, exposure to violence, structural discrimination and racism, sexism and sexual abuse, the opioid epidemic, economic hardship and social isolation as leading contributors 8 .

How social media affects teen mental health: a missing link

The current generation of adolescents was raised in the aftermath of the great recession of 2008. Haidt suggests that the resulting deprivation cannot be a factor, because unemployment has gone down. But analyses of the differential impacts of economic shocks have shown that families in the bottom 20% of the income distribution continue to experience harm 9 . In the United States, close to one in six children live below the poverty line while also growing up at the time of an opioid crisis, school shootings and increasing unrest because of racial and sexual discrimination and violence.

The good news is that more young people are talking openly about their symptoms and mental-health struggles than ever before. The bad news is that insufficient services are available to address their needs. In the United States, there is, on average, one school psychologist for every 1,119 students 10 .

Haidt’s work on emotion, culture and morality has been influential; and, in fairness, he admits that he is no specialist in clinical psychology, child development or media studies. In previous books, he has used the analogy of an elephant and its rider to argue how our gut reactions (the elephant) can drag along our rational minds (the rider). Subsequent research has shown how easy it is to pick out evidence to support our initial gut reactions to an issue. That we should question assumptions that we think are true carefully is a lesson from Haidt’s own work. Everyone used to ‘know’ that the world was flat. The falsification of previous assumptions by testing them against data can prevent us from being the rider dragged along by the elephant.

A generation in crisis

Two things can be independently true about social media. First, that there is no evidence that using these platforms is rewiring children’s brains or driving an epidemic of mental illness. Second, that considerable reforms to these platforms are required, given how much time young people spend on them. Many of Haidt’s solutions for parents, adolescents, educators and big technology firms are reasonable, including stricter content-moderation policies and requiring companies to take user age into account when designing platforms and algorithms. Others, such as age-based restrictions and bans on mobile devices, are unlikely to be effective in practice — or worse, could backfire given what we know about adolescent behaviour.

A third truth is that we have a generation in crisis and in desperate need of the best of what science and evidence-based solutions can offer. Unfortunately, our time is being spent telling stories that are unsupported by research and that do little to support young people who need, and deserve, more.

Merrimack graduate student wins american counseling association essay contest.

As a career advising fellow, Sanjana Sheth M’25 knows about the pressures and issues college students currently face. So, she decided to write about it.

In March, the American Counseling Association announced Sheth’s entry in its Future School Counselor Essay Competition won the grand prize. Sheth, currently enrolled in Merrimack’s clinical mental health counseling master’s program, was awarded $2,000 and her essay will be published in the ACA’s online publication, “Counseling Today.” 

The essay prompt asked participants what they think are the most pressing personal and social issues impacting students today and what counselors can do to best address them. 

“I wanted to urge the school counselors getting their degrees to focus on all the aspects of it,” Sheth said in her essay. “Connect with the students who are not ready to be open. That’s what we are taught in counseling – if you want to help anyone, you need to work or establish a therapeutic relationship.”

In her essay, Sheth said the most common issues she sees in students include “anxiety, depression, feelings of isolation, academic struggles, identity development, transition and adjustment issues, bullying in context with diversity and inclusivity and issues with interpersonal relationships,” 

As such, she argued that counselors must “create strategic and individual-focused interventions to effectively address challenges for their well-being and success.”

Prior to Merrimack, Sheth worked for two years as a researcher studying cancer and vaccines. She holds a master’s degree in pharmacology from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

“When we’d have offsite meetings, I’d meet with a lot of people who had cancer,” said Sheth. “They explained how traumatic their experience was. They had no clue how to deal with them.” 

Talking to patients and getting first-hand insight into the struggles faced by individuals grappling with chronic illness was very insightful. It became evident to her that her passion lay in directly aiding individuals in comprehending their trauma and facilitating their healing process. 

Sheth said Merrimack’s fellowship program piqued her interest most when applying for graduate school for the second time.

“I couldn’t find any other (college) that had so much support for students,” Sheth continued. “After that, I was really interested in the curriculum that they had set up.” She highlighted Merrimack’s comprehensive curriculum, which allows students to explore diverse paths within counseling, “plus you get to learn, experience and choose from different modalities.”

Now, Sheth hopes to help people understand and work through their trauma. Luckily, she said she has a supportive network of Merrimack staff and professors to help her reach her dreams.

“Submitting the essay was nerve-wracking for me. I owe a great deal of gratitude to my professors, whose encouragement and guidance pushed me to submit (the essay),” she said. “I had one of my professors, Melissa Spencer, look through it and tell me if it was OK. At Merrimack, I’ve found an environment that fosters growth, support, and learning — it’s truly been an enriching experience.”

Health Sciences Students to Host Mental Health Event on Campus

As part of their capstone class, health sciences students are planning the University’s third annual Fresh Check Day. The fun and interactive event fosters community and education while promoting mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

It has been an exciting semester for Rebecca Lovatt ’24, ’25 MPH. She’s been coordinating, connecting, and communicating with her fellow Chargers across the University as she gears up for an important event later this month: Fresh Check Day.

Part of Lovatt’s health sciences capstone project, Fresh Check Day is planned by students for students. Designed to foster mental health awareness and suicide prevention, Fresh Check Day will be held on the Bixler-Gerber Quad (or in the Beckerman Recreation Center, if it rains) on Wednesday, April 17.

As a member of the outreach team, Lovatt has been collaborating with her classmates this semester to organize the event. She’s been coordinating with various departments and offices on campus, from Counseling and Psychological Services to Athletics , as well as with several recognized student organizations , to raise awareness and support. She’s also been encouraging her fellow Chargers to volunteer at the event and to attend.

“Mental health promotion and suicide prevention are extremely important,” said Lovatt, a health sciences major . “Through the activities we have planned, students can recognize and utilize the peer and faculty support that is available on our campus, and they can connect with necessary resources.”

Chargers get t-shirts ready for Fresh Check Day.

Lovatt and her classmates are planning a community event that will educate and delight their fellow Chargers. They’ve created t-shirts, and they’re planning fun activities that will promote mental health. Fresh Check Day will also include important information about mental health and suicide prevention resources that are available to students. The student organizers hope to raise awareness about mental health while decreasing any stigma around seeking help or support.

Under the mentorship of their professors Deborah List, M.A., MPH, Ph.D. , and Kristina Krsiak, OTD, OTR/L , the students have been preparing for the event by fundraising, planning a variety of engaging activities, and training student volunteers. That’s something that Olivia Tona ’24 has been doing as a member of the activities team. They’ve been coordinating the day’s activities and tying each one to the theme of mental health awareness.

The marketing team is ready for Fresh Check Day.

“This event gives students a chance to destress and participate in a fun event that is teaching them mental health coping skills as well as educating them on resources that are available to them on campus,” said Tona, a health sciences major. “I hope students will feel heard and know that they are not alone if mental health is something that they are struggling with. I also hope that students get a better idea about what services are available to them on campus.”

Gabriella Aquino ’24 has been helping to create compelling flyers and social media posts to promote Fresh Check Day as a member of the marketing team. She’s excited to host an event that she believes will be a great way to encourage interaction in a supportive environment.

“I believe that hosting a Fresh Check Day is important because it brings awareness to mental health in college students,” said Aquino, a health sciences major. “It will allow students to feel comfortable speaking up about their own mental health while enjoying fun activities that benefit their mental health. I hope this event creates meaningful experiences that encourage healthy ways to manage stress and emotional challenges, destigmatizing seeking help about mental health.”

The flagship program of the Jordan Porco Foundation , a nonprofit based in Connecticut, Fresh Check Day events are organized by universities nationwide. They support the foundation’s mission to foster suicide prevention, mental health, and hope in young adults.

The event not only supports students’ mental health and awareness, it also offers health sciences students an invaluable opportunity. They work together to apply what they’ve been learning in the classroom as they gain hands-on experience planning an event that will serve their fellow Chargers.

For Kaitlynn Sabatino ’24, her time as a health sciences major enabled her to feel prepared to help plan the event. She hopes it will offer her fellow Chargers critical tools and education that they can then apply to their own lives.

“Our capstone class is very group oriented,” she explains. “The students are running the event. The classes I have taken have helped me improve how I work in a group, and they’ve taught me how to share my thoughts freely within in the group.”

The event has been planned for Chargers by Chargers as part of a health sciences capstone project since 2022. Lovatt, the outreach team member, hopes it will continue to encourage a sense of belonging, connection, and community. She’s excited to help her classmates build crucial life skills while appreciating the importance of their own mental health and community connections.

“When you think about a health sciences capstone, you might not think of putting on an event,” she said. “However, the point of Fresh Check Day is to connect with others and help them, just as we hope to do as future healthcare professionals. I hope the students enjoy this event as much as we do.”

Mental health issues are increasingly prevalent and local mental health organizations are seeking new ways to provide support and raise awareness. Among these, Still I Run uses the idea of exercise to bring together the community through a sense of caring and a concern for physical health. Founded in 2016 by Sasha Wolff, Still I Run promotes runners to lace up their shoes and hit the pavement in pursuit of mental health via running chapters across the country. Sasha Wolff, the founder of Still I Run, understands the power of running and what it can do for your mental health. At a low point in life, Wolff turned to running as a form of therapy, finding strength with every stride. She founded Still I Run with the belief that no one should face mental illness alone. “The basic but important goal of Still I Run is to use running’s therapeutic benefits to de-stigmatize mental illness,” Wolff noted. In addition to exercise, Still I Run chapters aim to establish safe spaces where people can talk honestly about their challenges. Rose Willson, interim president for Still I run, said the organization is continuing tho progress its goals through community building.

“Running is a form of therapy and a way to bring the community together for a greater cause. It allows people to see that they have allies and support right within their neighborhoods,” Willson said. As Still I Run looks towards the future, its vision remains the same as the day it was founded.

“Our vision is to create a world where mental health is openly discussed. Through continued advocacy and community engagement, the organization looks to expand and reach an even larger crowd to help spread their message,” said Michael Capiraso, the organization’s interim chairperson. It is with resilience that Still I run stands as an organization in a world where mental health is often shut down and not talked about. As individuals lace up their shoes and join the movement, they are not only running towards the finish line but towards a brighter, more resilient future for mental health advocacy.
