Help advance the future of computer science

Our teams are innovating at the cutting edge of their fields in order to tackle challenges and build products that impact billions of people every day.

Person pointing to image and night sky

Our mission and philosophy

The research conducted at google has broadened dramatically, becoming more important to our mission than ever before..

We aim to create a research environment rich in opportunities for product impact, to build a product environment that actively benefits from research, and to provide our staff the freedom to work on important research problems that go beyond immediate product needs.

Explore our locations

Offices around the world.

From Accra to Zürich, to our home base in Mountain View and beyond, we’re looking for talented, creative computer scientists to drive our work forward.

North America

Our teams in Atlanta focus on theoretical and application aspects of computer science with a strong focus on machine learning and the algorithmic foundations and theoretical underpinnings of deep learning, with applications to natural language understanding, machine perception, robotics, and ubiquitous computing and sensing.

Our teams in Cambridge work closely with academics at local universities as well as collaborators at local institutes with a goal to impact both Google’s products and general scientific progress. We accomplish this by releasing open source tools, publishing our work and sharing our findings with the academic community.

More boardshorts than boardroom, high tech meets high tide at Google L.A. Our engineers work on such high-impact products as Ads, Chrome, and YouTube, while our sales teams push the limits of digital advertising for top-tier clients. Take advantage of our picture-perfect SoCal weather by hitting the rock wall and elevate team strategy sessions with a game of oversized chess on the roof deck. In-house coffee and juice bars provide pick-me-ups, and beach breaks double as brainstorm sessions when you borrow one of our 4-seat surrey bikes, beach cruisers, or surfboards and head to the boardwalk.

Google Research in Montreal performs both open-ended and applied research, in numerous areas including reinforcement learning, meta-learning, optimization, program synthesis, generative modeling, machine translation, and more. We also support the local academic community and have several academic collaborations, including with Mila – Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute.

Our headquarters has come a long way from its humble roots in a Menlo Park garage, but our innovative Silicon Valley spirit is stronger than ever. On our largest campus, we work on cutting-edge products that are changing the way billions of people use technology. Onsite benefits like fitness and wellness centers embody our philosophy that taking care of Googlers is good for all of us. Build team skills with a group cooking class or coffee tasting, ride a gBike to one of our cafés, or work up a sweat in a group class. Here at the Googleplex, we’re looking for innovators, collaborators, and blue-sky thinkers. We’re looking for you.

We work in close collaboration with academia, with a goal to impact both Google’s products and general scientific progress. We accomplish this in two ways: by releasing software libraries, a way to build research findings into products and services, and through publishing our work and sharing our findings with the academic community.

Our team in Pittsburgh conducts research in natural language processing, machine learning, image and video understanding, and optimization, and our impacts range from academic paper publications to software systems used throughout Google. We collaborate closely with research and applied groups in many areas, and also work closely with Carnegie Mellon University and other organizations in the extremely strong computer science community in Pittsburgh.

As our company headquarters, Mountain View and the surrounding offices in Sunnyvale, San Francisco, and San Bruno are home to many of our world-class research teams and the innovative projects they work on.

Our research teams in Seattle and Kirkland work on a wide range of disciplines — from quantum computing to applied science to federated learning and health. In doing the above, and more, a large focus of our work also focuses on advancing the state of the art in machine learning.

Nestled between the Santa Cruz Mountains and the San Francisco Bay, with San Jose to the south, San Francisco to the north, and NASA right next door, you’ll find one of Google’s largest and newest global campuses in Sunnyvale. Here in the heart of the original Silicon Valley innovation is happening everywhere—from our Cloud team developing exciting new products and services, to moving into our latest office spaces which include interconnected building projects, the creation of green spaces connecting campuses with the community, and the creative restoration of local habitats. We love growing in Sunnyvale—and you will too.

We develop novel neural network architectures and learning algorithms, with applications to computer vision, natural language and speech processing, medical image analysis, and computer architecture and software.

Europe, Middle East, and Africa

Google Research teams in Accra collaborate with global research teams to lead many sustainability initiatives of particular interest to Africa. We implement theoretical and applied artificial intelligence with a strong focus on machine learning and algorithmic foundations to tackle some global challenges, such as food security, disaster management, remote sensing, among others.

Researchers in our Amsterdam office push the boundaries of what is possible in many domains, including natural language understanding, computer vision and audio, reinforcement learning and machine learning for the natural sciences.

In Berlin, our teams work on a range of topics from foundational to more applied and involve data comprised of text, images, video, audio and more. We are engaging and collaborating closely with Berlin’s vibrant academic and startup communities.

We work on machine learning, natural language understanding and machine perception, from foundational research to AI innovations, in search, healthcare, and crisis response.

We work on natural language understanding and conversational dialog, text-to-speech, (on-device) machine learning, human-centered AI research and user research as well as healthcare.

We work on problems in quantum computing as well as speech and language processing, and collaborate closely with Google’s product teams across the world.

We tackle big challenges across several fields at the intersection of computer science, statistics and applied mathematics while collaborating closely with a strong academic community.

We solve big challenges in computer science, with a focus on machine learning, natural language understanding, machine perception, algorithms and data compression.

Fact Sheet on FTC’s Proposed Final Noncompete Rule

Facebook

  • Competition
  • Office of Policy Planning
  • Bureau of Competition

The following outline provides a high-level overview of the FTC’s proposed final rule :

  • Specifically, the final rule provides that it is an unfair method of competition—and therefore a violation of Section 5 of the FTC Act—for employers to enter into noncompetes with workers after the effective date.
  • Fewer than 1% of workers are estimated to be senior executives under the final rule.
  • Specifically, the final rule defines the term “senior executive” to refer to workers earning more than $151,164 annually who are in a “policy-making position.”
  • Reduced health care costs: $74-$194 billion in reduced spending on physician services over the next decade.
  • New business formation: 2.7% increase in the rate of new firm formation, resulting in over 8,500 additional new businesses created each year.
  • This reflects an estimated increase of about 3,000 to 5,000 new patents in the first year noncompetes are banned, rising to about 30,000-53,000 in the tenth year.
  • This represents an estimated increase of 11-19% annually over a ten-year period.
  • The average worker’s earnings will rise an estimated extra $524 per year.

Foreign states targeting sensitive research at UK universities, MI5 warns

Ministers considering more funding to protect important research sites, with China seen as a particular concern

MI5 has warned universities that hostile foreign states are targeting sensitive research, as ministers consider measures to bolster protections.

Vice-chancellors from 24 leading institutions, including Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College London , were briefed on the threat by the domestic security service’s director general, Ken McCallum, and National Cybersecurity Centre (NCSC) chief, Felicity Oswald.

In addition, the UK government is looking at increased funding to improve security at sensitive sites. Oliver Dowden, the deputy prime minister, announced plans for a consultation on a package of measures that could include looking at key university personnel being given security clearance and a strengthened process to improve the transparency of funding, particularly with foreign institutions.

The measures will be focused on a small proportion of academic work, with a particular focus on research with potential dual uses in civilian and military life.

McCallum told the vice-chancellors that hostile states are targeting universities to steal technology that can “deliver their authoritarian, military and commercial priorities”, the Times reported.

The government ordered a review of protections for higher education in its refreshed foreign and security policy last year amid concerns that hostile states – and particularly China – were gaining undue influence over the sector.

Dowden has previously warned that some universities’ reliance on overseas funding could leave them open to being “influenced, exploited, or even coerced” by a foreign power.

After the security briefing, Dowden said: “For a millennium, our universities have thrived on being open – open to ideas, open to innovation, open to being independent of government.

“This is not about erecting fences, this is about balancing evolving threats and protecting the integrity and security of our great institutions.”

The consultation will explore proposals to protect cutting-edge technology under development in sensitive sectors that are being targeted by states intent on stealing intellectual property to enhance their own economic and military capabilities.

The NCSC and the National Protective Security Authority have also launched a tool to help universities assess their research security.

Michelle Donelan, the science and technology secretary, said: “I believe that universities are on the frontlines of a battle for information.

“Maintaining the UK’s world-leading reputation as an academic superpower relies on having strong safeguards to protect research from those who wish to do us harm.”

Tim Bradshaw, chief executive of the Russell Group of leading research universities, said: “Russell Group universities take their national security responsibilities incredibly seriously and already work closely with government and the intelligence community to help protect UK breakthroughs in fields like AI, which are important to our national interest.

“But we also recognise security is a dynamic and evolving challenge which means we need the right expertise and intelligence to keep pace with this.”

Universities UK chief executive Vivienne Stern said: “For several years, Universities UK has worked with government to ensure that universities are supported and equipped to recognise and mitigate risks to national security.

“This is important and necessary, and we welcome the government’s approach to working hand in hand with us to get the mechanisms right.”

Goodbye to noncompete agreements? What the FTC ruling could mean for workers and businesses

In a decision that could free millions of workers to quit jobs and join competitors or form their own companies, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) voted Tuesday to ban noncompete agreements. These contracts, which are widespread throughout industries, prevent employees from leaving a company to join a competitor or from forming a competing firm of their own.

Tony Tong

About one in five American workers, from minimum wage employees to CEOs, are bound by noncompetes, according to the FTC. The new regulations, set to take effect in August, would lead to wage increases totaling $300 billion per year, the agency said.

In its ruling , the FTC cited research co-authored by Tony Tong , professor of strategy and entrepreneurship in the Leeds School of Business, which found that not only do noncompete agreements limit worker mobility, they can lead to economic concentration and reduced competition. On the flipside, banning noncompetes should increase innovation and entrepreneurship, since workers and ideas can more easily move among companies.

CU Boulder Today sat down with Tong, also the chair of Leeds’ Strategy, Entrepreneurship and Operations Division, to discuss the impact of the FTC’s decision on employees and businesses.

What does this ruling mean for workers?

It’s a big win, especially for workers who earn a lower salary but have signed noncompete agreements, because their mobility was unnecessarily restrained by such agreements. It’s important to bear in mind that noncompetes are not just used for the highest-paid executives; they’re used very broadly, even in Colorado, which has a relatively relaxed stance.

Unlike highly paid executives who have bargaining power when it comes to negotiating with employers, rank-and-file workers don’t have a lot of choices and often have to sign the agreement to maintain employment, especially after they've turned down other offers. A lot of employees don’t know that they need to sign one until after they’ve accepted a job offer and walked into the workplace the first day. And if you’re an average worker, you can’t walk away at that point.

There’s a small downside, though. When employers are able to enforce noncompete agreements, they should be more willing to invest in training and give employees the knowledge related to the company and the industry. Now they may be more reluctant to do that for new employees, for whom that kind of training is very important. The burden of receiving that training might be shifted a bit more to the employees themselves.

What will the impacts be for businesses?

Certain industries like finance and biotech will be especially unhappy because proprietary information or knowledge is key to their success. Larger firms also don't like it; they want their employees to be with them for a long time. Their argument is that noncompetes protect their proprietary information, and with enforceable noncompetes, they’re more willing to invest in employees.

The FTC’s counterargument is that larger firms could use other means to protect proprietary information like nondisclosure agreements, and every state has a trade secret law. You don’t need to go so far as limiting someone’s mobility to protect your proprietary information.

In general, though, banning noncompete agreements is good news for small businesses. It's much easier for them to hire new employees, and it’s good for entrepreneurship. Venture capital firms seem to be reacting positively because they invest in startups.

Your research explores how noncompete agreements affect the broader economy. What were your findings?

The research, which was led by a then-doctoral student at Leeds, Kenneth Younge (who was a faculty member at Purdue University’s Krannert School of Management when the paper was published), showed that when Michigan accidentally changed its law to enforce noncompetes, the rate of mergers and acquisitions increased.

Acquirers saw companies based in Michigan as more valuable in the short run, because these companies could “trap” their employees for some time. Mergers and acquisitions can lead to market concentration. However, related research also shows Michigan’s noncompete enforcement led many knowledge workers to move to other states later.

Looking ahead, what other outcomes are possible from this ruling?

A lot of organizations are suing the FTC, like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, but these suits could take a long time to get through the system.

When the ruling goes into effect, I anticipate seeing more employees switching jobs, though not a big surge. They will be less restrained for sure, but people move jobs for many reasons other than noncompetes. Companies, too, will be digesting and taking other measures to retain employees. They can do a lot of other things to protect proprietary information. And even if one or two employees leave, it’s not going to cause a lot of damage to the company unless the whole team is poached.

The FTC’s rule makes sense in my opinion. Noncompetes have often been used by companies strategically for reasons other than protecting proprietary information. And some companies are found to be abusing the use of noncompetes, for example by asking new recruits to sign these agreements only after they have accepted the job and turned down other offers; by using vague language in the agreements to cover unnecessarily broad terms; or by threatening to sue employees even if they leave for good reasons.

Also, at the end of the day, I don't think in our free economy you can limit people's movement. Employees have the right to seek a higher wage and move to the company they want to work for.

Overall, this is good news for seniors graduating from universities. Especially in a place like Colorado—we have a dynamic economy, and startups are emerging every day, creating a diverse set of opportunities young employees should take advantage of to get the experiences that will benefit their careers.
