So you’ve decided to enrol onto a doctoral degree and study abroad at the same time. This is a great opportunity to develop yourself both personally and academically. However, do you actually go about securing a PhD as an international student? To help answer this for you, we’ve created this guide to explain how to apply for a PhD in foreign universities.

Why Do Your PhD Abroad?​​​​​​​

There are many benefits to studying abroad.

Some PhD students do so as a way to develop a new language, discover more about a different culture, and to meet new people.

Besides personal reasons, undertaking a doctorate degree abroad can also for academic purposes. For example, in some countries, a particular research field may not be very popular and so there may not be many doctorate options available. In these cases, undertaking a PhD abroad will open up many more opportunities. It could also offer greater funding, lower tuition fees, better laboratory equipment and more experienced supervisors. Not only would these factors result in a more enjoyable PhD, but they could also contribute to greater career prospects. For example, you will likely have more opportunities to write publications, attend conferences and collaborate with other researchers. All of these will help you establish yourself as a respectable researcher within your field.

Is It Difficult to Apply to PhDs Abroad?​​​​​​​

It’s not as difficult as you would imagine when it comes to applying to a PhD in a foreign country. Regardless of whether you’re applying to a university within the EU, such as the UK, Finland or Spain, or to universities within the US or Asia, the processes are relatively similar.

The differences in the application process can be categorised into three areas.

• the documents you need to provide,
• the prerequisite tests you need to sit,
• how much you need to communicate with the potential supervisors before applying.

We’ve provided a basic outline of the application processes below. Although this will provide you with a good starting point, we highly recommend you look at the university websites for specific instructions and guidance before applying.

Will I Need a Student Visa?​​​​​​​

This will depend on what country you are applying to. For example:

• In the UK, applicants from outside the EU will need a Visa Tier 4 (Student). This will allow them to undertake a full-time PhD. However, due to UK visa restrictions, international students are unlikely to be able to enrol onto a part-time degree.
• In Germany, most students will not require a student visa but will require a residence permit.
• In the US, applicants will need to hold an F-1 Student Visa.
• In Asia, the requirements differ depending on the specific country. For example, in China, you will require an X1 Student Visa whereas in Singapore you will require a Student Pass.

Because of the significant differences between countries, we highly recommend it is highly that you check the requirements on an individual case-by-case basis. This is best done by checking the government website of the country you wish to apply to.

General Process for Applying to PhDs Abroad​​​​​​​

When applying to a PhD position, most universities regardless of where they’re located will require:

• Online Application – An electronic form to provide your details and attach all supporting documents. You will also need to make any application fees during this process if required.
• Academic Transcripts – Most universities need a scanned copy of your transcripts when applying. You will only have to submit official hard copies once they have accepted your admission.
• CV – This should include details of your previous education, undergraduate degree and any experiences revenant to the field you’re applying to.
• Statement of Purpose/Personal Statement – A letter which outlines why you’re applying to the PhD and why you believe you’re suitable for the project.
• Letters of Recommendation – this should preferably be provided by your undergraduate degree course tutor or a professor who knows you well.

Language Tests

If your PhD is to be undertaken in English and English isn’t your first language, most universities will require you to sit an English language proficiency test. The most common tests, in order of popularity, are:

• IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems)
• TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
• PTE (Pearson Test of English)

The minimum test scores will change from university to university. They will also vary depending on the research field. For example, research projects related to English Literature or Law will require relatively high scores whilst projects in Science and Engineering will require slightly lower scores. To provide an example, the University of Leicester in the UK requires a minimum overall IELTS score of 7 for Law PhDs but has a lower overall score requirement of 6 for Engineering PhDs.

Finding a PhD has never been this easy – search for a PhD by keyword, location or academic area of interest.

How to Apply for PhDs in EU Countries​​​​​​​

For UK universities, there are generally two ways of applying. You can either apply directly through the university’s website or you can make an application through the UCAS Postgraduate system .

In Spain, Italy and Germany, before applying to a PhD you will first need to pass a pre-application process. This involves checking that your qualifications meet their eligibility requirements. Before undergoing this pre-screening process, it would be beneficial to first speak to your government. They may offer advice on how your countries qualification system corresponds to the qualification system in the country hosting the PhD.

Once you’ve made your application, the university will review it and get in contact with you. For most EU institutions, they will invite you for a Skype or telephone interview with them if they believe you may be a suitable candidate.

If you require a student visa to study in an EU country, it’s recommended that you submit your application at least 3-4 months before the proposed PhD start date.

How to Apply for PhDs in USA

In addition to the English language exams mentioned previously, international applicants will also need to sit additional exams to be eligible for PhDs in the USA. These are the GRE General Exam and GRE Subject Exam(s). The GRE Subject Exam(s) you will need to undertake will be specific to your field and will be specified by the university as part of their edibility requirements.

Securing a PhD position in the United States is considered relatively difficult compared to other countries. As a result, it is commonly recommended that you apply to at least 9 different universities to increase your chances of securing a position.

How to Apply for PhDs in Asia

As Asia covers a wide range of countries such as China, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, UAE and India, their application processes naturally differ from one another. Therefore, check the specific application process for each university you’re interested to get the most accurate information.

To summarise:

• China – uses two centralised application services, CUAC and CUCAS. Both these services help international students find and apply to a PhD project in China. Students can also apply directly to a University if they wish to.
• Singapore – rather than applying to a specific research project, you will have to apply to a faculty or department within a University. Only once you have been accepted into the university department will their research projects become available to you. Like US universities, most universities in Singapore will have required you to have sat a GRE Exams prior to applying to them.
• UAE – you must apply directly to your chosen university. To be eligible for a PhD in UAE, you must hold a Master’s degree and it must be from a university recognised by their government. You will also be required to undertake GRE Exams before making your application.

How to Apply for PhDs in Australia

To apply to a PhD in Australia, you will first be expected to find and email a potential supervisor. If you’re an international student and you make an application directly to the university without doing this first, it’s highly likely that you won’t be considered for the position.

Upon discussing the project with the supervisor, they will instruct you to put in a formal application. This formal application will require the information previously outlined above.

Similar to EU institutions, if an Australian university believes you’re a strong candidate, they will likely invite you to a Skype or telephone interview.

Unlike EU universities, PhDs in Australian universities can start at any time of the year. Therefore, unless a specific funding requirement is attached to the project, there are usually no deadlines associated with applying to their PhDs. However, try to apply 3 to 4 months before you intend to start your studies.

Ph.D. Program

The Ph.D. in Law degree program is designed to prepare J.D. graduates for careers as legal scholars and teachers through a doctoral program aimed at the production of a substantial body of academic research and writing under the close supervision of a three-member faculty dissertation committee. Unlike programs designed for students who wish to learn about law from the disciplinary perspectives of the social sciences or the humanities, the Ph.D. in Law is directed at students who wish to pursue advanced studies in law from the perspective of the law. This program offers emerging scholars an opportunity to contribute to the development of law as an academic field, and it provides an alternate pathway into law teaching alongside existing routes such as fellowships, advanced degrees in cognate fields, legal practice, and clerkships.

Because our entering Ph.D. students will have already completed their J.D. degrees, the anticipated course of study toward the Ph.D. in Law degree is three academic years and two summers in residence. In their first two semesters, Ph.D. students will enroll in courses designed to help them acquire the background and research skills needed to complete a dissertation in their field of interest and to prepare them for qualifying examinations that test the depth and breadth of the literacies and skills they have acquired. During their second year, students will prepare a dissertation prospectus and begin work on a dissertation. The dissertation may take the form of either three law review articles or a book-length manuscript and will make up a portfolio of writing that will be essential for success in the job market. Ph.D. students will also gain experience in the classroom, and receive the full support of Yale Law School’s Law Teaching Program , which has had remarkable success in placing graduates in tenure-track positions at leading law schools.

Ph.D. students receive a full-tuition waiver, a health award for health insurance coverage, and a stipend to cover their year-round living expenses, as well as support for participation in national and international conferences.

Applications for admission to the Ph.D. in Law program are available starting on August 15. The deadline for submission of all materials is December 15. Applicants to the Ph.D. in Law program must complete a J.D. degree at a U.S. law school before they matriculate and begin the Ph.D. program. Don’t take unknown luggage from anyone, NDLEA warns Nigerians

F emi Babafemi, Director of Media & Advocacy at the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), recently disclosed a concerning incident involving the apprehension of individuals in possession of codeine syrup.

According to Babafemi on his official X handle, a PhD student and another individual studying abroad were taken into custody after bottles of codeine syrup were discovered in the luggage they were carrying for a female friend overseas.

Babafemi emphasised that this situation could have resulted in imprisonment if the NDLEA had not intervened to ensure the responsible party was promptly sent back home.

He posted “A PhD student and another student studying abroad got into custody because bottles of codeine syrup were found in the luggage they picked for their female friend abroad.

“That’d have been jail if NDLEA had not worked hard to ensure the owner was put on the next flight home Reason why we warn you not to take any luggage you don’t know its content from anyone. Video shows how bags of opioids were concealed among spare parts coming from Onitsha heading to Mubi in Adamawa.”

Morgan Wallen fans braved the rain at Ole Miss as the country star returned to the stage for his first performance since being arrested in Nashville nearly two weeks ago.

Fans donned ponchos amid the downpour as they packed into the Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi, Saturday night for the 30-year-old singer’s concert.

Ahead of the show, inclement weather was predicted for the area over the weekend.

Despite online speculation that the show might be canceled, Morgan’s concert, which was the latest stop on his One Night at a Time World Tour, went ahead as scheduled.

Wallen’s performance followed opening acts by Bailey Zimmerman, Lauren Watkins and Nate Smith.

The show also marked his return to Ole Miss after last year’s mishap when Wallen abruptly canceled his performance after the opening acts had already finished and just minutes before he was slated to take the stage.

The stadium poked fun at the incident, displaying a message on the jumbotron before Wallen took the stage.

“Ladies and gentlemen, fortunately Morgan has a full voice and is very able to perform tonight.. Therefore, he’s ready to run this s— back and make things right…,” the message said. “No reason to make your way to the exits for the next two hours because Morgan and the boys are about to rock Oxford’s face off!!!”

Once the concert started, Wallen continued to make fun of his recent circumstances, telling a story about how his rowdiness nearly got him kicked off his high school baseball team, before playing the song “’98 Braves.”

“I got this set up here behind me, these flags are from my high school. And it represents something,” he told the crowd. “I had a coach, I played baseball, his name was Coach Davidson. When I was a junior in high school, I almost got kicked off the team. I was a li’l rowdy back then. I guess I’m still a little rowdy now,” he admitted, trying to stifle a laugh.

“But coach… he never gave up on me, and there’s been a lot of people who never gave up on me – some of them in this building tonight… you guys included.… I just wanted to shout out that part of my life.”

On Friday, Wallen broke his silence on his arrest as he took to X, formerly Twitter, to denounce his actions while reassuring fans his One Night at a Time tour will continue as planned.

“I didn’t feel right publicly checking in until I made amends with some folks,” Wallen wrote on social media. “I’ve touched base with Nashville law enforcement, my family, and the good people at Chief’s. I’m not proud of my behavior, and I accept responsibility.

“I have the utmost respect for the officers working every day to keep us all safe. Regarding my tour, there will be no change.”

On April 7, Wallen, 30, was charged with three felony counts by the Metro Nashville Police Department after a chair he allegedly threw off the roof of the six-story Chief’s bar landed on Broadway near two police officers.

“At 10:53 p.m. Sunday evening, Morgan Wallen was arrested in downtown Nashville for reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct. He is cooperating fully with authorities,” Wallen’s attorney, Worrick Robinson, told Fox News Digital.

Nearly one year ago, on April 23, 2023, Wallen caused chaos after suddenly canceling what was supposed to be the second appearance of a two-night, sold-out stint in Oxford, Mississippi.

“After last night’s show I started losing my voice so I spent the day resting up, talking to my doctor and working through my vocal exercises trying to get better,” he explained in an Instagram story. “I really thought I’d be able to take the stage and it kills me to deliver this so close to showtime, but my voice is shot and I am unable to sing.”

Following the cancellation, one fan filed a lawsuit against Wallen on behalf of ticket buyers and sought compensatory damages for a possible class-action lawsuit. The suit was voluntarily dismissed the following day.

A viral TikTok clip featuring a security guard who worked at the venue suggested Wallen canceled the show because he was too drunk to perform. He said Wallen’s cancellation due to vocal issues was “bullc—” and that an ambulance was needed to pick up the “Chasin’ You” singer. But Big Loud CEO Seth England refuted the inebriation claims in a social media post.

Despite last year’s difficulties and the alleged chair-throwing incident in Nashville, Wallen’s Ole Miss stop on his “One Night at a Time” tour was still full steam ahead.

Prior to Saturday’s show, Ole Miss athletics director Keith Carter told Fox News Digital, “We are aware of the situation, but no changes have been relayed to us yet. We are obviously monitoring everything very closely.”

Wallen only recently kicked off his “One Night at a Time” tour in Indianapolis on April 4, and he is scheduled to perform throughout the country with Bailey Zimmerman, Nate Smith and Lauren Watkins opening.

Georgia's parliament votes to approve so-called 'Russian law' targeting media in first reading

TBILISI, Georgia — Georgia’s parliament has voted in the first reading to approve a proposed law that would require media and non-commercial organizations to register as being under foreign influence if they receive more than 20% of their funding from abroad.

Thousands gathered outside parliament to protest. Opponents say the proposal would obstruct Georgia’s long-sought prospects of joining the European Union. They denounce it as “the Russian law” because Moscow uses similar legislation to stigmatize independent news media and organizations seen as being at odds with the Kremlin.

“If it is adopted, it will bring Georgia in line with Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus and those countries where human rights are trampled. It will destroy Georgia’s European path,” said Giorgi Rukhadze, founder of the Georgian Strategic Analysis Center.

In an online statement Wednesday, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell described the parliament’s move as “a very concerning development” and warned that “the final adoption of this legislation would negatively impact Georgia’s progress on its EU path.”

“This law is not in line with EU core norms and values,” Borrell said.

Borrell said that “Georgia has a vibrant civil society” that is a key part of its EU membership quest.

“The proposed legislation would limit the capacity of civil society and media organizations to operate freely, could limit freedom of expression and unfairly stigmatize organizations that deliver benefits to the citizens of Georgia,” he added.

Although Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili would veto the law if it is passed by parliament in the third reading, the ruling party can override the veto by collecting 76 votes. Then the parliament speaker can sign it into law.

The bill is nearly identical to a proposal that the governing party was pressured to withdraw last year after large street protests . Police in the capital, Tbilisi, used tear gas Tuesday to break up a large demonstration outside the parliament.

Wednesday had an even larger rally. Speaking there, opposition parliament member Aleksandre Ellisashvili denounced lawmakers who voted for the bill as “traitors” and said the rest of Georgia will show them that “people are power, and not the traitor government.”

The only change in wording from the previous draft law says non-commercial organizations and news media that receive 20% or more of their funding from overseas would have to register as “pursuing the interests of a foreign power.” The previous draft law said “agents of foreign influence.”

Zaza Bibilashvili with the civil society group Chavchavadze Center called the vote on the law an “existential choice.”

He suggested it would create an Iron Curtain between Georgia and the EU, calling it a way to keep Georgia “in the Russian sphere of influence and away from Europe.”

It is expected that up to one or two ILS Post-Graduate Fellowships will be awarded for 2024-2025.  Please note that this is separate from the Law School’s support for positions at the International Court of Justice; for more information regarding support for ICJ clerkships, please see the International Court of Justice Judicial Fellows Programme web page.

Applications for the 2024-2025 ILS Post-Graduate Fellowships are due on Friday, January 12, 2024.

Eligibility

• The 2024-2025 ILS Post-Graduate Fellowships are open to HLS graduates from the classes of 2021-2024.
• Applicants should not have previously been employed as clerks or legal interns in the court/tribunal where they are proposing to work.
• The ILS Post-Graduate Fellowship is available to applicants seeking positions that would otherwise be unfunded. Applicants who have secured positions with stipends of less than $1,000/month may also be considered for the ILS Post-Graduate Fellowship.
• The ILS Post-Graduate Fellowship is designed to fund an eligible position of nine months or longer with a grant in the amount of up to $40,000. Positions of six to eight months will also be considered, with concomitantly reduced funding. Placements of less than six months in duration will not be considered.
• Positions in U.S. or foreign national courts are not eligible for funding.
• The award of funding is contingent upon a nominee securing a qualifying internship or clerkship by April 15, 2024. ( Note : if the stated hiring timeline of a particular court is such that a position cannot be secured by this deadline, applicants may petition the Post-Graduate Fellowship Committee for an extension. Petitions should include documentation regarding the court’s stated application and hiring timeline, as well as an expected start date for the clerkship. )

Applications

All application materials should be submitted via email to the ILS Post-Graduate Fellowship program (c/o International Legal Studies – [email protected] ) by no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 12, 2024.

The following application components should be submitted as one PDF file:

• the ILS Post-Graduate Fellowship Application cover page
• relevant experience, background, and skills pertinent to international and/or transnational law, and language proficiency
• professional goals
• the host court or tribunal
• the work (including any specific projects) that the applicant expects to undertake
• the type of supervision the applicant expects to receive at the court or tribunal
• a current CV/resume
• a letter from the host court or tribunal indicating a commitment to hosting the applicant, and duration of the position*; additional details may be requested at a later date

* Note : applicants who have not yet secured a position/commitment letter must instead include an addendum (of no more than 250 words) to their statement of interest, describing the specific steps they have taken to secure a position with the court or tribunal. 

Applicants must also submit:

• An official Harvard Law School transcript. Official transcripts must be sent directly from the Office of the Registrar. Students can order their official transcript online by going to https://hls.harvard.edu/dept/registrar/transcript-requests/ and selecting the “Online Transcript Ordering System.” Transcripts should be sent directly to [email protected] .
• Two letters of recommendation, at least one of which must be from a Harvard Law School professor. Recommenders should email their letters directly to [email protected] .

Please note that interviews may be required for shortlisted candidates.

Selection Criteria

Factors considered by the Selection Committee will include:

• strength of the application in demonstrating how the proposed clerkship/internship aligns with the applicant’s career plans
• applicant’s HLS academic performance, relevant background, experience and skills, and commitment to international and/or transnational law

Notification of Award(s)

The Selection Committee will review applications and make determinations by early February.  Award notifications will be sent shortly thereafter.

Reporting Requirements

Selected candidates will be required to submit two reports detailing their experience as ILS Post-Graduate Fellows, one due at the halfway mark of their clerkship/internship, and one due upon its completion.  Fellows should also report their employment plans following the period of their Fellowship.

Travel Policy

Please note that the award of the ILS Post-Graduate Fellowship and associated funding will be contingent on the ability of recipients to adhere to all Harvard University travel policies.
