Our full-time PhD programme usually takes three to four years, while the part-time programme will last six to sevent years. As a full-time student, you will spend most of your time in the iconic Bush House where we have dedicated spaces for our PhD researchers. • Entry requirements

We seek to recruit highly motivated, ambitious students with strong educational backgrounds. The ideal candidate will have a first-class Bachelor’s degree from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. We encourage students from a wide variety of backgrounds (e.g, engineering, economics, business, mathematics/statistics, psychology, sociology, among others) to apply to our programme. Applicants are also required to have taken the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test.

What this course will give you

Doctoral training involves close collaboration between each doctoral student and academic staff on shared research interests, coursework at UCL and other leading research departments, and independent research activities.

As a doctoral student, you will benefit from our collaborative research community, a lively programme of research speakers from other institutions, and links with researchers worldwide.

The programme is taught at our Canary Wharf campus , on Level 50 and Level 38 of One Canada Square, placing students in the heart of Canary Wharf, London’s global business and financial hub. Students will also have full access to the Bloomsbury campus, a district famous for its cultural and educational institutions.

The foundation of your career

Students acquire rigorous academic and interpersonal skills to perform cutting-edge research in management. This prepares them for academic and research-based careers in leading universities and research institutions.

Employability

Our PhD graduates aspire to pursue academic careers in top business schools of world-class universities. Nearly all graduates go on to tenure-track faculty positions at leading business schools around the world.

Throughout the programme, our students have the chance to interact with leading scholars around the world. This is facilitated by our active research seminar series and students' participation in leading academic conferences.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, and class discussion based on case studies and other activities.

The structure of the MRes/PhD Programme includes both a one-year MRes Degree and a four-year PhD Degree. Progression from year one (MRes) to year two (PhD) is subject to exceeding minimum marks for all MRes modules, exams, and final project as specified in the Programme Handbook. Students who fail to meet these criteria will not progress from MRes to PhD.

Students take a total of 180 credits in the MRes year. This is made up of the MRes Research Project:

• MSIN0135 - MRes Research Project: 105 credits. 8,000-10,000 words

Students take 75 credits of taught modules, of which the following three are compulsory modules:

• MSIN0131 - Research Presentation and Critical Writing Skills . 15 credits
• MSIN0132 - Seminar in Organisation Theory . 15 credits
• MSIN0240 - Designing Management Research Projects. 15 credits

Finally, students choose elective modules (15 credits each) among those offered by the School of Management, other UCL Departments (e.g., Economics, Psychology), and partner universities in London.

Students can take additional (non-credit) modules at UCL and our partners schools in the remaining years to complement their learning, but there is no requirement to take modules after the MRes year.

Student performance is assessed through simulations, presentations, coursework, group projects, class participation, and examinations.

MRes students typically study 3 compulsory modules over Terms 1 and 2 as well as 2 optional modules which may take place in Terms 1, 2 or 3. Students will also undertake a substantial research project, which would usually be undertaken over Terms 2 and 3.

Each taught module is delivered over 10 weeks, with 3 contact hours per week comprising lecture content and interactive components.

In addition, students typically spend approximately 6-8 hours a week for each module on assessment and independent study to further develop the skills and knowledge covered in lectures and seminars.

The total number of weekly hours will vary according to the weekly activities being undertaken.

Research areas and structure

Organisations and Innovations Research examines the social psychology and behaviour of individuals and teams at work. Topics of interest include creativity, innovation, social networks, diversity, and related topics.

Strategy and Entrepreneurship Research is focused on understanding what makes organisations successful and what leads to new business formation. Topics of interest include digitisation, AI, platforms, new and decentralised organisational forms, learning, innovation, competition, interorganisational relationships, corporate and entrepreneurial strategy, reputation and identity.

Operations and Technology Research focuses on understanding how companies actually do things for value creation and value capture. Topics of interest include R&D management, new product development, innovation management, service systems, supply chain economics and healthcare operations.

Fees for this course.

The tuition fees shown are for the year indicated above. Fees for subsequent years may increase or otherwise vary. Where the programme is offered on a flexible/modular basis, fees are charged pro-rata to the appropriate full-time Master's fee taken in an academic session. Additional costs

This programme does not have any compulsory additional costs outside of purchasing books or stationery, printing, thesis binding or photocopying. 

Students may have the opportunity to participate in conferences in the UK and overseas. The UCL School of Management provides MRes/PhD students with an annual budget for conferences, which students will use to cover the travel, accommodation, food and other costs whilst at conferences, in line with UCL’s expenses policy.

Funding your studies

All admitted MRes/PhD students are offered fully funded scholarships which covers all tuition fees, and includes an annual stipend of £25,000 which is tax-free. This scholarship is open to all students (both EU/UK and international), but only a limited number of scholarships are available. Our scholarships are internationally competitive, such that students typically do not pursue outside funding.

PhD Community in the Business School

Research students are welcomed to Brunel as valued members of our thriving, research-intensive community. A research degree provides the opportunity to investigate a topic in-depth and contribute new knowledge to your discipline. Here at BBS, we have five key subject areas:

We are one of the largest PhD student cohorts in the UK. We have approximately 160 students based in the UK and around 25 based in Bahrain. Our student cohort is culturally diverse, with students from 34 different countries.  The male to female ratio is at 47% to 53%. We have 4 self-elected student reps and they discuss PhD students’ comments and issues with the PGR director regularly. There are dedicated, high spec PhD areas in the Business School with all the equipment you need for your studies.

Excellent research support and training

The Graduate School provides a range of personal, professional and career development opportunities. This includes workshops, online training, coaching and events, to enable you to enhance your professional profile, refine your skills, and plan your next career steps as part of the Researcher Development Programme . The researcher development programme (RDP) offers workshops and seminars in a range of areas including progression, research management, research dissemination, and careers and personal development. You will also be offered a number of online, self-study courses on BBL, including Research Integrity, Research Skills Toolkit, Research Methods in Literature Review and Principles of Research Methods.

Library services

Brunel's Library is open 24 hours a day, has 400,000 books and 250,000 ebooks, and an annual budget of almost £2m. Subject information Specialists train students in the latest technology, digital literacy, and digital dissemination of scholarly outputs. As well as the physical resources available in the Library, we also provide access to a wealth of electronic resources. These include databases, journals and e-books. Access to these resources has been bought by the Library through subscription and is limited to current staff and students.

BBS PhD Developmental Programme

This opportunity focuses on training students to become future HE teachers/lectures. The students are paired with their academic mentor and join them as a supporting tutor for a number of seminars over one term. Students undertake workshops about facilitating learning and teaching in higher education before and after acting as a support tutor. Students submit a 500-word reflective report and receive verbal feedback from their mentors. On completion, students are awarded a certificate and the hours count towards their Brunel Volunteer contribution.       

Business Life Programme 

Business Life, a programme of professional training and development events, is available to all students in the Business School and has been developed and delivered in association with professional institutes, leading employers from industry, alumni and the public sector. 

Careers and your future

You will receive tailored careers support during your PhD and for up to three years after you complete your research at Brunel. We encourage you to actively engage in career planning and managing your personal development right from the start of your research, even (or perhaps especially) if you don't yet have a career path in mind. Our careers provision includes online information and advice, one-to-one consultations and a range of events and workshops. The Professional Development Centre runs a varied programme of careers events throughout the academic year. These include industry insight sessions, recruitment fairs, employer pop-ups and skills workshops.

In addition, where available, you may be able to undertake some paid work as we recognise that teaching and learning support duties represent an important professional and career development opportunity.

UK entry requirements

The general University entrance requirement for registration for a research degree is normally a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree (1st or 2:1). 

An interview will be required as part of the admissions process and will be conducted by at least two academic staff members remotely via MS Teams, Zoom, or face to face.

Applicants will be required to submit a personal statement  and a research statement. Please contact your proposed supervisor, where possible, to receive feedback and guidance on your research statement before submitting it. Learn how to prepare a research statement  here .   

EU and International entry requirements

If you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you must prove knowledge of the English language so that we can issue you a Certificate of Acceptance for Study (CAS). To do this, you will need an IELTS for UKVI or Trinity SELT test pass gained from a test centre approved by  UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and on the Secure English Language Testing (SELT) list . This must have been taken and passed within two years from the date the CAS is made.

English language requirements

• Pearson: 64 (59 in all subscores)
• BrunELT : 68% (58% in all areas)
• TOEFL: 98 overall (min 20)

Should you wish to take a pre-sessional English course to improve your English prior to starting your degree course, you must sit the test at an approved SELT provider for the same reason. We offer our own BrunELT English test and have pre-sessional English language courses for students who do not meet requirements or who wish to improve their English. Brunel offers a number of funding options to research students that help cover the cost of their tuition fees, contribute to living expenses or both. Who are we looking for?

At Imperial, we are looking for well-rounded candidates with the aptitude and ambition to thrive in our PhD programmes and make a global impact as future leaders of business and society.

Entry requirements

Academic achievement.

A PhD at Imperial College London is a demanding academic qualification. We therefore look for evidence of strong and consistent academic performance and expect applicants to have high grades at undergraduate and Master’s level, including a strong dissertation.

From graduates of UK institutions, this would normally equate to a combination of at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree at undergraduate level and a Master’s degree awarded with Merit or Distinction. Please see the  College Country index  for the international equivalent of these qualifications, though please bear in mind that the Business School may ask for higher grades than the College minimum.

In exceptional circumstances, we will consider candidates holding a strong First Class Honours undergraduate degree, without a Master’s, if accompanied by very strong academic references and outstanding CV and personal statement.

What to expect – pre-requisite knowledge and training

As a PhD graduate of Imperial College Business School, you will be expected to have a solid foundation in quantitative research methods, understand the breadth of your research area and have in depth knowledge of your specific field demonstrated through your own original research. Graduates who are working in primarily qualitative fields are still expected to undertake core quantitative methods training.

To be able to succeed in the formal courses, as a minimum, you should have knowledge of:

Topics include functions, limits and continuity, differentiation, applications of the derivative, curve sketching, and integration theory, methods of integration, applications of the integral, Taylor’s theorem, infinite sequences and series.

Matrix Theory/Linear Algebra

Topics include matrix algebra, systems of linear equations, determinants, vector algebra and geometry, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, vector spaces, subspaces, bases, and dimension, linear transformations, representation by matrices, nullity, rank, diagonalization, inner products, adjoints, unitary, and orthogonal transformations.

Topics include fundamentals of probability theory, confidence intervals, and tests of hypothesis for normal distributions, one- and two-sample tests and associated confidence intervals for means and proportions, analysis of variance, F-tests, correlation, regression, contingency tables, and statistical analysis using the computer.

Data analysis and programming

During your courses and research, you will use a variety of analysis tools and programming languages, including R, STATA, MATLAB, Python – applicants who are not confident with programming should learn before enrolling. There are many open online courses available that make it feasible to learn. This  Data School  web page gives a good round up of some available resources as a starting point.

• Statement of purpose

One of the most important parts of our application form is the Statement of Purpose section. Although you are not expected to have your whole thesis planned at this stage, it is important to articulate your knowledge and ideas. It should include the following:

• Your motivation for undertaking the MRes and PhD
• A discussion of possible research areas that you might pursue
• Business School faculty you have identified that align with your research interests
• What interests you most about your chosen field of study

Relevant past study or research projects – in particular those completed with faculty

GMAT or GRE requirement

A GMAT or GRE score is a compulsory requirement to be considered for entry into the Doctoral programme at Imperial College Business School. This GMAT/GRE score must be submitted before we will consider an application. Please note that we do not make offers on the condition that a candidate achieves a satisfactory GMAT/GRE score.

There are only a few test dates per year in some countries or testing centres. It is highly recommended that applicants arrange a GMAT or GRE test at the earliest possible opportunity to ensure that they can submit a timely application.

All applicants are free to take either test and we understand that there are some countries where only one of these tests is available.

We expect applicants to have obtained strong scores across all elements of the exam. We consider strong scores to be in the 90th percentile or higher in either test.

For the GMAT Exam , our preferred total score is 700 or above. From the different test elements, scores in the 90th percentile roughly equate to: 50/60 in quantitative reasoning, 39/60 in verbal reasoning, 6/6 in analytical writing and 8/8 in integrated reasoning.

We also accept the GMAT Focus Edition (available from 7 November 2023). If taking this test, our preferred total score is 655 or above. We would also be looking to see scores in the 90th percentile in the Data Insights, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning components. Scores are valid for five years from your appointment date. 

From the different test elements, scores in the 90th percentile roughly equate to: 165/170 in quantitative reasoning, 163/170 in verbal reasoning and 5/6 in analytical writing.

English language requirement

All Doctoral students must meet our English language entry requirements. If you have a degree taught in English within the following countries, you meet the English requirement automatically: Australia, Canada, Guyana, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America, West Indies. This applies only to degrees that were studied entirely and awarded in the relevant country.

Most applicants meet the requirement in one of the following ways:

IELTS (academic): A minimum score of 7.0 with minimum scores of 6.5 in all elements.  The IELTS indicator test will be accepted for admissions to the 2023/24 academic year.

TOEFL iBT: A minimum score of 100 overall with minimum scores of 22 in all elements.  The ETS at Home test will be accepted for admission to the 2023/24 academic year.

• Duolingo English Test: 125 Overall with no less than 115 in any band score.
• IELTS, TOEFL and Duolingo scores are only valid if they are less than two years old on the programme start date
• TOEFL: You must meet the entry requirement in one test from your scaled scores ( ‘My Best Scores’ reported by TOEFL will not be considered ). For more information regarding TOEFL please visit the  ETS website . Please note if you would like ETS to send your TOEFL scores directly to the College, our TOEFL Institution Code is 0891.

If you wish to be considered for the Doctoral programme, please follow the steps below:

• Start a new application and search for “Business”. Select either Business (MRes 1YFT) or (MRes 2YFT) depending on which pathway you wish to apply for.
• Applicants applying for the Marketing or Analytics and Operations pathways will need to select Business (MRes 1YFT). Applicants applying for the Economics and Public Policy, Finance, Strategy and Organisational Behaviour or Innovation and Entrepreneurship pathways will need to choose Business (MRes 2YFT). You must only select Business [LISS DTP 1+3] (MRes 1YFT) if you are also planning on completing a LISS Case for Support.
• Once you have chosen either the Business (MRes 1YFT) or Business (MRes 2YFT) programme, you will need to select which pathway you wish to be considered for based on your research area of interest.
• You will also need to provide a brief outline of your primary research interest and indicate a potential supervisor.

Submit your supporting documents

Once you have submitted your application form, you will need to upload the following supporting information to complete your application in time for the application deadline you want to be considered by.

• Current resume/CV
• Complete degree transcripts
• Contact details of two academic referees
• GMAT/GRE test scores: you should have sat and have a valid test score that meets our requirements at the point of entry
• Evidence of English language qualification

It’s essential we receive your supporting documents  and  reference information before midnight (UK time) on Monday 8 January 2024.  Until we have received all the necessary documents, your application will not be complete and will not be processed.

Once the following information is uploaded, the Doctoral Admissions Team will assess your application and you will be contacted if any additional documents are required. Complete applications will then be considered by the Academic Selection Committee. Applications submitted without a GMAT or GRE score or without references will be considered incomplete and will not be considered.

If you are shortlisted by the Academic Selection Committee, you will be invited to an interview with a panel of faculty before a final decision is made. In the case of overseas candidates, we will arrange an interview by telephone or via Skype. 

Shortlisted candidates will normally be invited to interview by Friday 1 March 2024 at the latest.

Admissions decision

You will be notified of your application result by email as soon as possible after your interview. Following this, you will receive official notification via your Imperial Gateway account from the College Registry team. If you have been granted a place on the programme the official offer notification will let you know of any conditions that you need to complete to take up your place.

Funding your PhD

We offer a funded Doctoral programme at the Business School. This includes a full tuition fee waiver (Home/EU or Overseas fees) plus a living stipend for up to five years through the Business School Graduate Teaching Assistant Scholarship. Funding for a sixth year can be considered on a case-by-case basis, with the potential to undertake a teaching or research assistant studentship with one of the Business Schools research centres.

Some of our scholarship funding comes from EPSRC and ESRC for candidates who meet Research Councils UK’s academic and residential eligibility conditions. During the MRes you will have a discussion with our team to find out whether you are eligible to move onto any of these awards.

How do i apply and what documents do i need to submit with my application.

All applications to the Doctoral programme are made via our online platform. You will either need to select 'Business (MRes 1YFT)' or 'Business (MRes 2YFT)' based on your research area of interest. Further information can be found on our  Doctoral programme page .

What do I need to include in my statement of purpose?

One of the most important parts of our application form is the ‘statement of purpose’ section. It should be no more than one or two A4 pages and should cover the following points:

• Your motivation for undertaking the programme
• A discussion of possible research areas that you might pursue and how these are a good fit for Imperial College Business School
• Relevant past study, industry, or research projects

Long-term career goals

I haven’t decided what area I want to specialise in for my PhD, what should I do?

You should browse the description of the different research groups in the Business School and the webpages of faculty members. This will give an overview of their research interests and current projects. The MRes gives you an opportunity to pursue potential interests through courses and a project prior to committing to the PhD.

Do I need a willing supervisor prior to application?

No, although in your application you should list a member of faculty you have identified as a potential supervisor. You can demonstrate in your statement of purpose how your research interests are aligned to a potential supervisor and the Business School.

Checking the research profiles of faculty members and Business School projects will give you an indication of whether the Business School is a good fit for you. If no faculty are working in your area of interest it is unlikely that you would be shortlisted, as we may not be able to provide supervisory support during your PhD.

During the MRes year, you will become part of the research community at Imperial College Business School and interact with faculty and other PhD students during taught courses and at seminars, which we hope will influence and help shape your research ideas for the PhD.

Are all applicants interviewed?

Not all applications progress to the interview stage of the selection process, however we interview all shortlisted candidates before making an offer. In the case of overseas candidates we will arrange an interview by telephone or via Skype.

Is GMAT/GRE a compulsory requirement?

Yes. A GMAT/GRE score must be submitted before we will consider an application. Any applications submitted without a GMAT/GRE score will be considered incomplete until we receive a score. Please note that we do not make offers on the condition that a candidate achieves a satisfactory GMAT/GRE score.

Do you offer Doctoral funding and stipend?

We offer a fully funded Doctoral programme at Imperial College Business School – this includes a tuition fee waiver and a stipend for up to five years. The 2024-25 rate of the Graduate Teaching Assistant scholarship stipend is £25,000. Rates are reviewed annually and are expected to increase for 2025-26 in line with Research Council UK rates. Stipends are tax-free and the continuation of the stipend will depend on your satisfactory progress on the programme.

What living costs should I allow for in London?

Living costs vary considerably depending on the area of London you choose to live in and your choice of accommodation.

Do you offer Doctoral scholarships?

Within Imperial, we also have funding opportunities from various external studentships, including EPSRC, ESRC, and the Imperial College President’s PhD Scholarships .

Students who are eligible for other PhD  funding opportunities  that may be available to them are expected to apply for them.

How long does it take to complete the Doctoral Programme?

The Doctoral programme is structured to take between four to six years full-time. In the first year, all students undertake a one or two year MRes programme depending on their chosen research area specialism. Subject to satisfactory academic progress, students then progress to the PhD which takes between 3-4 years.

When does the academic year start?

The Doctoral programme has one intake each year in September and is spread over four to six years.

Do you offer any distance learning or part-time research programmes?

It is not possible to enrol on the Doctoral programme on a part-time or distance learning basis. Students must be in attendance throughout the full period of study.

Can I transfer from my current Doctoral programme to Imperial College Business School's Doctoral programme?

It is not usually possible to transfer onto the Doctoral programme as it is unlikely that previous studies would perfectly overlap with the School’s expertise.

Can I come to Imperial College Business School as a visiting student?

Imperial College Business School does not accept visiting student applications. On rare occasions students are invited to visit by an academic and are dealt with individually.

Can I have a part-time job whilst enrolled in the programme?

The Doctoral programme is full time. Students are able to undertake part-time work if this does not break any relevant visa and/or scholarship conditions, however the programme offers a living stipend to support students during their studies.

How many students do you accept onto the Doctoral programme every year?

Admission onto the Doctoral programme is highly competitive as we accept around 15 students each year, from a total of approximately 200 applications.

Is there a workspace assigned to Doctoral students?

There is a designated workspace which includes a computer and relevant software assigned to all enrolled Doctoral students. You will share working space with other PhD students in your cohort.

When will I receive my official offer?

When the Business School recommends an offer, the College Registry team will perform a final review of your application to make sure that all College entry requirements are met before making an official offer. This process can take up to three weeks from Business School recommendation.

Do I need to pay a deposit to secure my place?

No. This is not required as all places on the Doctoral Programme come with full funding.

How do I show that I’ve met the academic condition of my offer?

You will receive an email detailing what you are required to submit and where you need to submit relevant documents.

How do I show that I’ve met the English language condition of my offer?

IELTS and TOEFL certificates should be scanned and emailed to  [email protected] . If you have not yet received your certificates, you can email your IELTS Test Report Number or TOEFL 16 digit registration number to the Registry team.

If you have completed the Pearson Test of Academic English, please ensure you have sent your scores to Imperial via your  PearsonPTE account.

If you have completed another one of Imperial’s accepted English language qualifications, you will need to post the original, physical document to the Registry team to support this qualification. You will receive an email with more information and the address that the document will need to be posted to.

Full-time PhD students have an annual review and also a semi-annual review (SAR) every year. Part-time PhD students have an annual review. The SARs and annual reviews are opportunities to reflect upon progress and achievements as well as to set goals for the coming six to twelve months.

Students are required to attend and pass three research methods courses as part of the upgrade process to the PhD route. Specifically, students need to attend and pass Philosophy of Methods, Qualitative Research Methods for Doctoral Students, and Quantitative Research Methods for Doctoral Students.

The upgrade time scale and process is in accordance with Royal Holloway processes and guidelines.

Entry requirements

Research Training

The School has a comprehensive training programme available for PhD Researchers. The formal PhD Taught Programme provided by SBM is a compulsory component of your work as a postgraduate researcher in your first year. After the first year, PhD researchers are encouraged to attend selected components of the training programme.

Personal Research Allowance

The School provides an annual budgetary allowance to full-time and part-time PhD researchers, to contribute towards the costs of their research and to enable their participation in external developmental events. Research-related expenses may include expenditure on books, conferences, training courses, travel and subsistence for research activities and, in certain cases, specialist software.

Collaboration

Queen Mary is part of the   London Interdisciplinary Social Science (LISS)  Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) with King’s College and Imperial College. LISS DTP is an  Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)  Doctoral Training Partnership, offering a range of social science research workshops and training sessions, which are open to all PhD researchers at SBM.

Applicants must demonstrate a high level of analytical and quantitative skills (such as in mathematics and statistics), evidenced by strong performance in relevant modules taken on previous degree programmes and/or through relevant standardised test performance (such as GRE Quantitative of at least 160). The MRes and PhD in Financial Economics is a joint programme between the UCL Department of Economics and the UCL School of Management.

The MRes programme is the first year of the five-year integrated MRes/PhD programme in Financial Economics. The MRes programme will provide you with training in research methods together with an advanced understanding of financial economics, to enable you to conduct insightful and original PhD level research in financial economics. 

The MRes will firstly provide quantitative training in microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and finance. These will be taught in the context of cutting-edge research and relevant applications. Secondly, it will provide you with analytic frameworks and transferable skills that will allow you to identify relevant and promising research topics, present ideas in order to obtain feedback, and provide feedback yourself. 

The subsequent years (for students who progress from the MRes to MPhil) will focus on the skills you will need to run research projects to completion and to present completed research projects to various kinds of specialised audiences. Likewise, teaching skills will also be developed.

PhD Structure

• The MRes programme consists of taught modules (Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics. Real Analysis and Probability with Economic Application), a hybrid module (Financial Economics) with taught components and research based components, and a research project in the final part of the year. For the MRes project, you work under supervision to design and carry out a substantial piece of original research. This enables you to gain a deep understanding of the entire research process.
• Superior performance is required for automatic progression from MRes to MPhil. In particular, students should achieve an average mark of not less than 60% in the independent, original research components of the programme, and not less than 50% in the taught element.
• Our highly selective and small-sized PhD programme ensures that each student receives personal attention and guidance from our faculty members throughout their doctoral study. The close mentorship process forms the foundations of a successful academic career. At the same time, you will be part of both the School of Management PhD cohort and the Economics PhD cohort, with which you will share most of the taught modules.
• We expect our PhD graduates to have as their goal an academic career as a faculty member in a top business school or Economics department or in the research group of an international institution or a central bank.

Students take a total of 180 credits in the MRes year. This is made up of the MRes Research Project (MSIN0135) and 75 credits of compulsory taught modules. 

All modules in the MRes year are core modules, there are no optional modules. 

• ECON0107 - Macroeconomics, 15 credits  
• ECON0106 - Microeconomics, 15 credits  
• ECON0108 - Econometrics, 15 credits  
• ECON0118 - Real Analysis and Probability with Economic Applications, 15 credits
• MSIN0234 - Topics in Financial Economics, 30 credits  
• MSIN0135 - MRes Financial Economics Research Project, 105 credits  

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, and class discussion. Student performance is assessed through presentations, coursework, projects, and examinations. 

Students will study 4 compulsory taught modules. A typical taught module is taught over two terms (2 x 10 weeks) with 4 hours of contact hours per week (3 hours of lecture + 1 hour of review session). In addition, students spend approximately 6-8 hours a week for each module on assessment and independent study to further develop the skills and knowledge covered in lectures and seminars.  

Students will also undertake a substantial research project, which would usually start in Term 2 and be completed over the Summer. The total number of weekly hours will vary according to the weekly activities being undertaken.

As a research student you will join a highly active research environment which involves frequent research seminars and visits by leading scholars worldwide, reading groups, brown bag seminars and panels in which PhD students and faculty members present and discuss their ongoing work. Such forums provide an excellent opportunity to receive critical constructive feedback on your research and to develop academic, generic and transferable skills.

Entry requirements and admissions criteria:

Applicants to the MRes+PhD programme must hold a distinction in a master’s degree in Economics or a closely related subject. Applicants must demonstrate a high level of analytical and quantitative skills (such as in mathematics and statistics), evidenced by strong performance in relevant modules taken on previous degree programmes and/or through relevant standardised test performance (such as GRE Quantitative of at least 160). Submitting a GRE test result is encouraged but not compulsory and is only one of the components used to assess the strength of applications. 

We only have a single intake in September. We accept applications throughout the year. Successful candidates who have submitted their MRes application by 31 January 2024 will receive a scholarship (full fee waiver plus a stipend). Successful candidates who have submitted their application after this date may receive a scholarship subject to availability, or will come with their own funding.

In your personal statement you are expected to suggest one or more faculty members as potential supervisors. On the application form you may see that it states that it is preferred that you contact potential supervisors beforehand. However, we strongly discourage applicants from contacting individual faculty members or potential supervisors when applying to our programme. All applications are first evaluated by a joint admissions committee, so contacting potential supervisors separately will not increase your chances.

We also require you to submit IELTS or TOEFL scores if English is not your first language. Our School requires a “Level 2” English language qualification which corresponds to:

IELTS: Overall grade of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each of the sub-tests.

TOEFL: Score of 96 overall, plus 24/30 in the reading and writing subtests and 22/30 in the listening and speaking subtests.

The application window closes 31 January 2024 (17:00 UK time) and a late submission window closes on 05 April 2024 (17:00 UK time). We advise those interested in the programme to apply before 31 January 2024, as those applying in the late submission window will only be considered if there are still places remaining.

Apply via UCL Postgraduate Admissions System here . When starting the application, you must select the MRes Financial Economics option. In addition to filling out the online application form, please upload a copy of the following documents:

• Official Transcripts of Grades / Course marks
• A 1 page personal statement that clearly indicates: (i) your research interests and preliminary research ideas, (ii) potential faculty member(s) you may want to work with (this is a suggested list, you don’t need to contact potential supervisors beforehand), and (iii) your motivation to do a PhD.
• Your  GRE  score report, if you took the test.
• Your IELTS/TOEFL score report, if English is not your first language.

Funding/Scholarships

We offer fully funded five year scholarships to all admitted students who apply before the 31 January 2024. The scholarship is open to all nationalities. It covers all tuition fees, and includes an annual stipend of £25,000 which is tax-free. 

Successful candidates who have submitted their application after 31 January 2024 may receive a scholarship subject to availability or will come with their own funding.

Additional Costs

This programme does not have any compulsory additional costs outside of purchasing books or stationery, printing, thesis binding or photocopying.  Students may have the opportunity to participate in conferences in the UK and internationally. The UCL School of Management provides MRes/PhD students with an annual budget for conferences, which students will use to cover the travel, accommodation, food and other costs whilst at conferences, in line with UCL’s expenses policy.

2:1 bachelor’s degree or equivalent in computer science or a social science discipline, plus high merit (65+) in a Master’s degree or equivalent in information systems or management or a related discipline.

Competition for places at the School is high. This means that even if you meet our minimum entry requirement, this does not guarantee you an offer of admission.

Fees and funding

Every research student is charged a fee in line with the fee structure for their programme.  The fee covers registration and examination fees payable to the School, lectures, classes and individual supervision, lectures given at other colleges under intercollegiate arrangements and, under current arrangements, membership of the Students' Union. It does not cover living costs or travel or fieldwork.

Home students: £4,829 for the first year (provisional) Overseas students: £22,632 for the first year

The fee is likely to rise over subsequent years of the programme. The School charges home research students in line with the level of fee that the Research Councils recommend. The fees for overseas students are likely to rise in line with the assumed percentage increase in pay costs (ie, 4 per cent per annum).

The amount of tuition fees you will need to pay, and any financial support you are eligible for, will depend on whether you are classified as a home or overseas student, otherwise known as your fee status. LSE assesses your fee status based on guidelines provided by the Department of Education.

Programme structure and courses

Information systems phd seminar series and workshops.

Throughout the programme all Information Systems and Innovation doctoral students attend weekly research seminars, which feature presentations and discussions from doctoral students, invited speakers and academic members of the Information Systems and Innovation Faculty group .

Research Practicums

In the first year of your programme, you will engage in active research, called Research Practicums, with different members of Faculty. The rotation of practicum assignments will include one-to-one training and collaboration that provides you better understanding of the research process, e.g.:

• Literature reviews.
• Applied research methods and practices.
• Determining theory-driven testable hypotheses.
• Identifying appropriate methods and samples.
• Conducting analyses.
• Evaluating findings and implications.
• Writing manuscripts for the academic peer-reviewed process with ultimate goal of publication in top-tier academic journal.

Courses & Seminars

In your first year you will take courses to prepare you for research in organisational phenomena associated with IT innovation, and the management of IT-enabled organisational and social change. You will take core quantitative and qualitative research courses and choose an elective course in advanced methods or data analysis methods. In consultation with your supervisor, you will settle on a definite research topic by the end of the first year.

At the end of this first year, your progress is reviewed to establish that you are on track to upgrade from MPhil to PhD status.

All first year doctoral students in the Department of Management will take the seminar A Social Sciences Perspective of Academic Research in Management.

Courses include:

Research Traditions and Paradigms in IS and Organisations The foundations of social research and the key issues concerning the status of knowledge and the forms by which it is acquired. You will focus on the ways by which key epistemological paradigms have been applied in the fields of Information Systems and Organisation Studies.

Introduction to Quantitative Analysis An intensive introduction to quantitative data analysis in the social sciences, covering the foundations of descriptive statistics and statistical estimation and inference. You will have computer classes to give hands-on training in the application of statistical techniques to real social science research problems.

Qualitative Research Methods You will cover the fundamentals of qualitative research methods with opportunities to put those methods into practice. It prepares you to design, carry out, report, read and evaluate qualitative research projects.

Managing Digital Platform Innovation Dynamics of large-scale digital service platforms and their associated ecosystems, with a focus on facilitating in-depth debates on complex research issues related to platform and infrastructure innovation.

Elective Methods or Data Analysis course

You will choose one course from a selection of options including:

• Multivariate Analysis and Measurement

A Social Sciences Perspective of Academic Research in Management

Along with all MRes/PhD and MPhil/PhD students from across the Department of Management Research programmes you will participate in a seminar on the nature of scientific enquiry in the Social Sciences. The seminar series is led by members of the Faculty across the Department and provides an interdisciplinary collaborative perspective and the opportunity for students to develop academic presentation skills

Second, third and fourth year (PhD)

At the start of year two you will submit a research proposal, up to 15,000 words, related to your designated major field for upgrade to PhD. The paper will outline the aims and methods of your thesis, provide preliminary data collection and analysis. You will also need to submit a concise literature review in which the significance of the proposed research is articulated.

In years two to four of the programme, you are expected to dive deep into your research and write your thesis. While writing the thesis you will continue to attend the weekly Information Systems PhD Seminar during term times but can also attend other regular research seminars that may be relevant to your research.

Throughout your PhD you will be expected to show the continued development of research ideas for publication or presentation at conferences, participation in relevant training courses and career development activities.

Supervision, progression and assessment

Supervision.

You will be allocated a PhD supervisor on commencing the programme. 

During the first year of the programme, you will participate in Research Practicums, working in collaboration with different faculty mentors. Each research practicum is a 5-10 week engagement, enabling you to participate in research activities and develop your own research skills.

You will also attend and contribute to the Information Systems PhD Seminar Series and Workshops and other workshops relevant to your research question on a weekly basis. These are designed to strengthen your methodological skills and enable you to present your work in progress.

Progression and assessment

Successful completion of work required for each year is a necessary condition for re-registration in the following year. You will need to meet certain criteria, such as achieving certain grades in your assignments.

During the 2 nd year of registration you submit a research proposal for your upgrade to PhD.

You are required to complete your PhD thesis within four years and should allow three to six months for revisions and submissions.

Your final award will be determined by the completion of an original research thesis and a viva oral examination.

Language Centre  – the Centre specialises in offering language courses targeted to the needs of students and practitioners in the social sciences. We offer pre-course English for Academic Purposes programmes; English language support during your studies; modern language courses in nine languages; proofreading, translation and document authentication; and language learning community activities.

LSE Careers  ­ – with the help of LSE Careers, you can make the most of the opportunities that London has to offer. The MRes/PhD in Economics and Management is part of a rigorous and interdisciplinary graduate training programme. It is designed to stimulate critical thinking and provide you with the training to conduct research to advance the frontier of applied Economics in the field of Managerial Economics, broadly defined to include topics from organisational economics to personnel economics, to entrepreneurship, to political economy. It is a specialised programme closely aligned with the PhD in Economics (and including the same core sequence of courses) but allowing for the more specialised study of organisations and institutions, and for more personal supervision by scholars in these fields within the Department of Management.

As a research-led department of management at the heart of LSE’s academic community in central London we are ranked #5 in our field . The programme includes a comprehensive methodological training with the opportunity to specialise in the designated field of Economics and Managerial Economics.

You will work closely with international and world-class faculty as part of a vibrant doctoral student community, all of whom are pursuing varied research in different fields of management. The approaches employed by the Managerial Economics and Strategy group embody the rigour appropriate to scientific investigation. In addition to a group of economic theorists, a wide variety of empirical approaches flourish from lab experiments, to field experiments, to the analysis of administrative data. The group's research interests include entrepreneurship; insurance markets; incentives and communication within organisations; incentives within state bureaucracies; the economics of China; multinational firms; supply chains; firms and trade in developing countries; behavioural economics; and political economy.

GRE requirement

The GRE is required for all applicants. We do not require a specific GRE overall score but the test gives us an indication of your aptitude for our programmes. Your score should be less than five years old on 1 October 2024 and must show full and percentile scores for all three sections.

Assessing your application

We welcome applications for research programmes that complement the academic interests of members of staff at the School, and we recommend that you investigate staff research interests  before applying.

We do not require a specific overall score but the test gives us an indication of aptitude for our programmes. A strong GRE score will count in your favour, but other information, such as your research interests, your examination results, previous qualifications and references are central to our overall evaluation of your application. We recognise that if your first language is not English, the verbal test will be more demanding and we view your score on that basis.

Fees and funding

Every research student is charged a fee in line with the fee structure for their programme. The fee covers registration and examination fees payable to the School, lectures, classes and individual supervision, lectures given at other colleges under intercollegiate arrangements and, under current arrangements, membership of the Students' Union. It does not cover living costs or travel or fieldwork.

The fee is likely to rise over subsequent years of the programme. The School charges home research students in line with the level of fee that the Research Councils recommend. The fees for overseas students are likely to rise in line with the assumed percentage increase in pay costs (ie, 4 per cent per annum).

The amount of tuition fees you will need to pay, and any financial support you are eligible for, will depend on whether you are classified as a home or overseas student, otherwise known as your fee status. LSE assesses your fee status based on guidelines provided by the Department of Education.

The School recognises that the  cost of living in London  may be higher than in your home town or country, and we provide generous scholarships each year to home and overseas students.

Programme structure and courses

First year (mres).

The first year of the MRes is focused on teaching and skills training in Micro and Macro Economics, Econometrics, Statistics and Modelling. Students will have to come from a strong background in Economics and be expected to participate in pre-sessional courses as required. These course begin before the start of the academic year, normally in late August. 

These courses are all taken in the Department of Economics.

Alongside courses taken in the Department of Economics, students take the seminar course A Social Sciences Perspective of Academic Research in Management. The seminar provides an opportunity to work alongside other first year research students in the Department of Management and to develop critical analysis skills by interaction with academic colleagues in a diversity of management research fields on important current research topics.

Students are also invited and expected to attend the Managerial Economics and Strategy Faculty Research Group seminars.

Courses include: 

Two compulsory courses in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics for MRes students.

The aim of the microeconomics course is to develop the basic tools for analysing problems of resource allocation used by economists working in research, government, and business. The first part of the course focuses classical theories of market behaviour and strategic interaction, and models of decision making under uncertainty and game theoretic solution concepts. The second part of the course focuses on models of imperfect competition and information economics.

In the macroeconomics course you will cover topics in advanced macroeconomics with emphasis on fundamentals and applications to recent theoretical advances in Economic growth, Search and Matching, Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium Models and Monetary Economics.

Choice of either Econometrics for MRes students OR Econometric Analysis

You are required to choose one advanced econometrics course in discussion with your Programme Director.

A Social Sciences Perspective of Academic Research in Management

Along with all MRes/PhD and MPhil/PhD students from across the Department of Management Research programmes you will participate in a seminar on the nature of scientific enquiry in the Social Sciences. The seminar series is led by members of the Faculty across the Department and provides an interdisciplinary collaborative perspective and the opportunity for students to develop academic presentation skills.

Second year (MRes)

In the 2-year MRes programme, you will engage in active research, called Research Practicums, with different members of Faculty within the Managerial Economics and Strategy Faculty Research Group . The rotation of practicum assignments will include one-to-one training and collaboration that provides you better understanding of the research process, e.g.:

• Literature reviews.
• Applied research methods and practices.
• Determining theory-driven.
• Testable hypotheses.
• Identifying appropriate methods and samples.
• Coding and data analysis.
• Conducting analyses.
• Evaluating findings and implications.
• Writing manuscripts for the academic peer-reviewed process with ultimate goal of publication in top-tier academic journal.

You will take compulsory courses in Institutional and Organisational Economics, and choose an additional elective course in Economics or Managerial Economics depending on your training and intellectual requirements and preferences. You will also write a research paper in your field of interest which will form an important element in your upgrade to PhD.

The Economics of Organisations and Institutions

The course studies from an economics perspective the major organisations and institutions in modern and historical economies. First, you will consider major organisations: firms and states. Second, you will focus on major institutions: market and non-market (political, legal, informal). The course will take an economic perspective to these organisations and institutions including selection, incentives, and information transmission within organisations.

Topics in Organisations and Institutions

A seminar course focused on reading and discussion of recent academic articles around the frontier of research in organisational and institutional economics from an economics perspective including international supply chains; firms in developing countries; entrepreneurship; social movements; the economics of crime and policing; robots and AI in the workplace.

Advanced Economics

A range of Economics course options taught within the Department of Economics, including International Economics for Research students, Labour Economics, Economics of Industry and Development Economics.

During the second year you will also start to attend the Work in Progress seminar, an opportunity to present your work to faculty and peers, listen to their work and engage with outside speakers are also invited from time to time.

Third, fourth and fifth year (PhD)

Upon successfully completing the MRes and progressing to the PhD, you will work on your research and write your PhD thesis.

In the first year of the PhD programme (Year 3 of registration) you will have the opportunity to select an additional course in either Economics or Management. Students are expected to continue to attend and engage in the Work in Progress seminars. Where relevant you may also attend the Department of Economics Work in Progress Seminars.

There are regular reviews on your research progress and in the final year you prepare a detailed plan of work for the successful submission of your thesis. 

Throughout your PhD you will be expected to show the continued development of research ideas for publication, participation in relevant training courses and career development activities.

Supervision, progression and assessment

Supervision.

You do not need to have identified a supervisor prior to application. During your MRes you will be supervised by the PhD Director of the MRes/PhD in Economics and Management programme for the duration of the MRes period.

During the second year of the programme, you will participate in Research Practicums, working in collaboration with different Managerial Economics and Strategy faculty mentors. Each research practicum will enable you to participate in research activities, understand Faculty research interests, and develop your own research skills.

Your PhD supervisor will be appointed when you upgrade to PhD. Your lead supervisor will be in the Department of Management, working with a second supervisor from either the Department of Management or the Department of Economics, depending on the interests of the student and Faculty.

Progression and assessment

You will need to meet certain criteria to progress to each subsequent year of the programme, such as achieving certain grades in your coursework and engaging in all aspects of the programme.

Your final award will be determined by the completion of an original research theses and a viva oral examination.

Disability and Wellbeing Service  – they are experts in long-term health conditions, sensory impairments, mental health and specific learning difficulties. IT help  – support is available 24 hours a day to assist with all your technology queries.   

LSE Faith Centre  – this is home to LSE's diverse religious activities and transformational interfaith leadership programmes, as well as a space for worship, prayer and quiet reflection. It includes Islamic prayer rooms and a main space for worship. It is also a space for wellbeing classes on campus and is open to all students and staff from all faiths and none.   

Language Centre  – the Centre specialises in offering language courses targeted to the needs of students and practitioners in the social sciences. We offer pre-course English for Academic Purposes programmes; English language support during your studies; modern language courses in nine languages; proofreading, translation and document authentication; and language learning community activities.

LSE Careers  ­ – with the help of LSE Careers, you can make the most of the opportunities that London has to offer. Whatever your career plans, LSE Careers will work with you, connecting you to opportunities and experiences from internships and volunteering to networking events and employer and alumni insights. 

LSE Library   –   founded in 1896, the British Library of Political and Economic Science is the major international library of the social sciences. It stays open late, has lots of excellent resources and is a great place to study. As an LSE student, you’ll have access to a number of other academic libraries in Greater London and nationwide. 

LSE LIFE  – this is where you should go to develop skills you’ll use as a student and beyond. The centre runs talks and workshops on skills you’ll find useful in the classroom; offers one-to-one sessions with study advisers who can help you with reading, making notes, writing, research and exam revision; and provides drop-in sessions for academic and personal support. LSE Students’ Union (LSESU)  – they offer academic, personal and financial advice and funding.  

PhD Academy   – this is available for PhD students, wherever they are, to take part in interdisciplinary events and other professional development activities and access all the services related to their registration. 

Sardinia House Dental Practice   – this   offers discounted private dental services to LSE students.  

St Philips Medical Centre  – based in Pethwick-Lawrence House, the Centre provides NHS Primary Care services to registered patients.

Student Services Centre  – our staff here can answer general queries and can point you in the direction of other LSE services.

Many of our students are eligible for a Postgraduate Loan of over £10,000.

Entry requirements

You will be required to have:

• a good honours degree from a UK university or equivalent (first or upper-second class), although applicants will usually tend to have obtained a master's degree before entry

Candidates with other qualifications are considered on their merits.

As a part of the application process, you are required to submit a research proposal outlining how you intend to investigate your topic of interest. In the proposal, you will need to clearly state your research questions, aims and objectives, as well as your review of the literature on the topic and the corresponding research design. The document needs to specify what your original contribution to the knowledge will be. You can find more information about the structure and content of the research proposal . Please note that your application cannot be processed without the proposal and you will be able to upload it, once you click 'Apply now' and start the application process.

The University only offers supervision to candidates if there is adequate available supervisory expertise in the area of the research project.

Accreditation of Prior Learning

Any university-level qualifications or relevant experience you gain prior to starting university could count towards your course at London Met. Find out more about applying for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) .

English language requirements

To study a degree at London Met, you must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. If you require a Student visa (previously Tier 4) you may need to provide the results of a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as Academic IELTS. This course requires you to meet our standard requirements .

If you need (or wish) to improve your English before starting your degree, the University offers a Pre-sessional Academic English course to help you build your confidence and reach the level of English you require.

Modular structure

We have PhD students in all our Schools: the School of Art, Architecture and Design; Guildhall School of Business and Law; the School of Computing and Digital Media, the School of Human Sciences, the School of Social Professions and the School of Social Sciences.

Each PhD project is unique, and yours will be fine-tuned in consultation with the two supervisors dedicated to your research. Recent research areas include:

PhD study is self-directed. Students are allocated a supervisory team composed of a lead supervisor and at least one other supervisor. These are allocated on the basis of the candidate's application, research topic and interview. We only offer supervision to candidates when we have adequate available supervisory expertise.

Where this course can take you

Many people with an PhD become lecturers, teachers or researchers, but these are by no means the only destinations.

Depending on your discipline, you may go into industry (this is frequently the case for graduates in biological or computer science), the City (business and law graduates), public sector management and/or policy-making (social science and business graduates), international governmental organisations (social science and business graduates), the social professions or non-governmental organisations.

Many of our graduates are mid-career and use their degree for career enhancement in areas such as social services, education, counselling, health and social care, or diplomacy.

Distance learning

There is a distance learning option available. 

PhD by prior publication/output

The University will award the degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) to registered students who successfully complete approved programmes. All proposed research programmes will be considered for research degree registration on their academic merits.

A PhD by prior output allows students who don't have traditional qualifications but have produced research and developed their knowledge to a doctoral level to gain academic recognition.

The publications of the student must be accessible to scholars or other interested persons. The work submitted must have been subjected to peer review by the relevant academic community and also provide evidence of an independent, original and significant contribution to knowledge and critical judgement. All work should have been published in the last 10 years and be traceable in publicly available databases, catalogues etc.

Programmes of research may be proposed in any field of study, as long as the proposed programme is capable of leading to scholarly research. The written thesis may be supplemented by material other than written form, if special provision has been made and agreed.

What is the difference between the MPhil and PhD?

Research students at London Met can work towards a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). To obtain a PhD you’re expected to investigate a topic and make an original contribution to knowledge. At MPhil level, your research should represent an extension of existing knowledge, although the demands of originality and sustained enquiry are less than those required for a PhD.

Additional costs

Please note, in addition to the tuition fee there may be additional costs for things like equipment, materials, printing, textbooks, trips, fieldwork, specialist conferences or professional body fees.

Additionally, there may be other activities that are not formally part of your course and not required to complete your course, but which you may find helpful (for example, optional field trips). The costs of these are additional to your tuition fee and the fees set out above and will be notified when the activity is being arranged.
