About this book

This open access book presents thirteen outstanding doctoral dissertations in Information Technology from the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering, Politecnico di Milano, Italy. Information Technology has always been highly interdisciplinary, as many aspects have to be considered in IT systems. The doctoral studies program in IT at Politecnico di Milano emphasizes this interdisciplinary nature, which is becoming more and more important in recent technological advances, in collaborative projects, and in the education of young researchers.

Accordingly, the focus of advanced research is on pursuing a rigorous approach to specific research topics starting from a broad background in various areas of Information Technology, especially Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics, Systems and Control, and Telecommunications.

Each year, more than 50 PhDs graduate from the program. This book gathers the outcomes of the thirteen best theses defended in 2019-20 and selected for the IT PhD Award. Modernizing data with strategic purpose

Data modernization is squarely on the corporate agenda. In our survey of 350 senior data and technology executives, just over half say their organization has either undertaken a modernization project in the past two years or is implementing one today. An additional one-quarter plan to do so in the next two years. Other studies also consistently point to businesses’ increased investment in modernizing their data estates.

It is no coincidence that this heightened attention to improving data capabilities coincides with interest in AI, especially generative AI, reaching a fever pitch. Indeed, supporting the development of AI models is among the top reasons the organizations in our research seek to modernize their data capabilities. But AI is not the only reason, or even the main one.

This report seeks to understand organizations’ objectives for their data modernization projects and how they are implementing such initiatives. To do so, it surveyed senior data and technology executives across industries. The research finds that many have made substantial progress and investment in data modernization. Alignment on data strategy and the goals of modernization appear to be far from complete in many organizations, however, leaving a disconnect between data and technology teams and the rest of the business. Data and technology executives and their teams can still do more to understand their colleagues’ data needs and actively seek their input on how to meet them.

Following are the study’s key findings:

AI isn’t the only reason companies are modernizing the data estate. Better decision-making is the primary aim of data modernization, with nearly half (46%) of executives citing this among their three top drivers. Support for AI models (40%) and for decarbonization (38%) are also major drivers of modernization, as are improving regulatory compliance (33%) and boosting operational efficiency (32%).

Data strategy is too often siloed from business strategy. Nearly all surveyed organizations recognize the importance of taking a strategic approach to data. Only 22% say they lack a fully developed data strategy. When asked if their data strategy is completely aligned with key business objectives, however, only 39% agree. Data teams can also do more to bring other business units and functions into strategy discussions: 42% of respondents say their data strategy was developed exclusively by the data or technology team.

Data strategy paves the road to modernization. It is probably no coincidence that most organizations (71%) that have embarked on data modernization in the past two years have had a data strategy in place for longer than that. Modernization goals require buy-in from the business, and implementation decisions need strategic guidance, lest they lead to added complexity or duplication.

Top data pain points are data quality and timeliness. Executives point to substandard data (cited by 41%) and untimely delivery (33%) as the facets of their data operations most in need of improvement. Incomplete or inaccurate data leads enterprise users to question data trustworthiness. This helps explain why the most common modernization measure taken by our respondents’ organizations in the past two years has been to review and upgrade data governance (cited by 45%).

Cross-functional teams and DataOps are key levers to improve data quality. Modern data engineering practices are taking root in many businesses. Nearly half of organizations (48%) are empowering cross-functional data teams to enforce data quality standards, and 47% are prioritizing implementing DataOps (cited by 47%). These sorts of practices, which echo the agile methodologies and product thinking that have become standard in software engineering, are only starting to make their way into the data realm.

Compliance and security considerations often hinder modernization. Compliance and security concerns are major impediments to modernization, each cited by 44% of the respondents. Regulatory compliance is mentioned particularly frequently by those working in energy, public sector, transport, and financial services organizations. High costs are another oft-cited hurdle (40%), especially among the survey’s smaller organizations.

Can large language models replace human participants in some future market research?

Do market researchers still need to conduct original research using human participants in their work? Not always, according to a new study. The study found that thanks to the increasing sophistication of large language models (LLMs), human participants can be substituted with LLMs and still generate similar outputs as those generated from human surveys.

The study is published in Marketing Science . The article, "Determining the Validity of Large Language Models for Automated Perceptual Analysis," is authored by Peiyao Li and Zsolt Katona, both of the University of California, Berkeley; Noah Castelo of the University of Alberta and Miklos Sarvary of Columbia University.

According to the research, agreement rates between human- and LLM-generated data sets reached 75%–85%.

"LLMs can be used to generate text when given a prompt on certain generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms," says Li. "Our research focused on perceptual analysis and the use of automated market research for certain product categories."

To conduct their research, the study authors used LLMs to tap data that is broadly available on the internet. They developed a new methodology and workflow that allows market researchers to rely only on an LLM to conduct market research. As a result, they demonstrated that LLM-powered market research can produce meaningful results and even replicate human results.

"It is important to note that with LLMs, while market researchers may not require interviews with human research subjects, the ultimate data does originate from human beings, using available data," says Katona. "LLMs have been engineered to accurately replicate human responses based on machine learning of actual human perceptions, attitudes, and preferences."

Castelo added, "The core LLM takes a prompt as an input and generates a continuation of text as output. With proper prompting, the LLM can then generate comparisons and assessments of various brands or products in a given category and produce results that are, at the moment, 75%–85% in agreement with research featuring human participants ."

The researchers believe that for some product and brand categories, their new method of fully or partially automating market research will increase the efficiency of market research by speeding up the process and potentially reducing cost. At the same time, they caution that fully automated market research without human input may not be accurate for all product categories.

"While we are very excited about the possibilities we've seen through our research, we recognize that this is just the beginning and going forward, LLM-based market research will be able to answer more nuanced questions as the market research field begins to tap and develop its potential," says Sarvary.

Regulatory Science Challenge

In the United States, 2.7 million people ages 12 or older reported suffering from opioid use disorder (OUD) in 2020, with relapse rates of 65-70%. In addition, 75% of overdose deaths in the U.S. are due to opioids and the cost of the epidemic is estimated at $1.5 trillion.

This Triangle CERSI project, which includes a collaboration between Duke University, University of North Carolina, and the Digital Medicine Society (DiMe), will build a protocol for a tool that uses data from digital sensor technologies, like wearables, to predict when people affected by OUD might relapse. Investigators aim to generate a scientific plan to use consumer technologies and the data they collect to predict relapse and to inform early-intervention strategies to provide every person affected by OUD with the care they need, when they need it most.

Project Description and Goals

Prioritizing equity and inclusion, this project will:

  • Assess/select the phenotype(s), or observable physical properties, of persons/patients with OUD on which to base the study protocol.
  • Study the behaviors/physiologic responses connected to opioid use relapse that can be detected with digital sensor technology.
  • Explore appropriate technologies that can be used to collect this data.
  • Create a protocol for a study to develop and test an OUD risk prediction tool.

To complete this work, investigators will:

  • Review existing research to determine what is currently known about relapse in OUD (e.g., physiological, behavioral, social).
  • Seek perspectives from a diverse set of experts, people affected by OUD, and their health care providers.
  • Develop a scientific plan for an OUD risk prediction tool, informed by these findings.

Findings from this project will inform the development of an evidence-based, scientific plan to build an equitable, data-driven tool to predict relapse in a person living with OUD. This tool offers a low burden, high reach, and scalable solution for preventing lapses & relapses for all individuals with OUD, offering a pathway to improve care for all people affected by OUD.

Research Outcomes/Results

Two hundred and twenty-three patients with a mean age of 65 years completed the survey. These patients preferred a higher chance of good biopsy outcomes, and a lower chance of erectile dysfunction caused by the treatment and urinary incontinence after treatment. The patients stated in the survey that they are willing to accept:

  • a 15.1%-point increase in erectile dysfunction caused by the treatment to achieve a 10%-point increase in a good biopsy outcome after HIFU ablation, and
  • an 8.5%-point increase in urinary incontinence for a 10%-point increase in a good biopsy.

Also, further analysis revealed that patients who thought their cancer was more aggressive were more willing to tolerate urinary incontinence. Younger men were willing to tolerate less erectile dysfunction risk than older men. Respondents with a greater than college level of education were less willing to tolerate erectile dysfunction or urinary incontinence.

Research Impacts

Incorporating patient preference information into decisions that FDA makes about regulating devices is one of the major goals of FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH). Study findings show that patients prefer specific outcomes related to prostate ablation therapies like HIFU. The study results may help inform the design and regulation of current and future prostate tissue ablation devices by providing information about outcomes that patients most desire.

Today, the U.S. Department of Energy’s  Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) and  Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) announced the MACRO: Mixed Algae Conversion Research Opportunity   funding opportunity announcement (FOA).   The FOA will award up to $18.8 million to address research and development (R&D) challenges in converting algae, such as seaweeds and other wet waste feedstocks, to biofuels and bioproducts that can decarbonize domestic transportation, industry, and communities.

Seaweeds, also known as macroalgae, are an emerging biomass resource with unique benefits compared to land-based biomass systems. However, they are underutilized and are difficult to convert due to their variability, unique chemical make-up, and storage instability. Overcoming these conversion challenges will help build algae biomass supply chains, accelerate their demand, and ultimately, drive the U.S. bioeconomy by enabling greater volumes of  sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) conversion to algae.

A wide range of biomass resources, such as readily available seaweeds and wet waste feedstocks, will be critical to reach the  Biden-Harris administration’s decarbonization goal of an equitable, clean energy future of net-zero emissions, economy-wide by no later than 2050. This FOA will also support the government-wide targets of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge , the Executive Order on Advancing Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation for a Sustainable, Safe, and Secure American Bioeconomy , and the Clean Fuels & Products Shot™ .

Topic Areas

Aligning with BETO and FECM’s strategic program goals, the FOA will fund selected projects in two focus areas: 

  • Topic Area 1 : Conversion of Seaweeds to Low Carbon Fuels and Bioproducts   This Topic Area, funded by BETO, will focus on laboratory scale R&D on conversion of seaweeds and seaweed blends with other wet wastes to renewable fuels and bioproducts to enable these readily available feedstocks to access new markets. It aims to address gaps in storage, mobilization, and conversion of readily available algae, including offshore farmed seaweeds, seaweed wastes, and blends of seaweed with other waste algae or blends of seaweed with other wet wastes to low-carbon fuels and bioproducts to enable these readily available feedstocks to access new markets. If successful, these efforts will enable market expansion, address community waste management challenges, and reduce greenhouse gas reductions.  
  • Topic Area 2 : Conversion of Algal Biomass for Low Carbon Agricultural Bioproducts This Topic Area, funded by FECM, will support the use of anthropogenic CO 2 streams from industrial sources or utilities to grow micro- and macroalgae for low-carbon bioproducts. It aims to utilize CO 2 emissions streams from utilities or industrial sources to grow algae for source material and create value-added bioproducts (exclusive of fuels). Applications are sought that utilize anthropogenic (e.g., fossil fuel derived) CO 2 emissions, including concentrated CO 2 supplied from DAC technologies, in the cultivation process and then convert macro- and/or micro-algae into low-carbon agricultural applications or bioproducts such as animal feed. Applications are encouraged to focus on optimization of the technologies and processes for the conversion of cultivated algae biomass to bioproducts and clearly describe the end use bioproducts targeted.

Both topic areas contribute to BETO’s  strategic goals for SAFs and other low-carbon bioproducts , as well as FECM’s aims to use CO 2   emissions to grow algae and convert these feedstocks into low-carbon agricultural bioproducts.

BETO anticipates making approximately five to six financial assistance awards lasting from 24 to 36 months under this FOA. FECM intends to award three to four financial assistance awards that will run up to 24 months in length.  

The FOA concept paper  deadline is 5:00 p.m. ET, on May 10, 2024 , and full applications are  due at 5:00 p.m. ET, on June 27, 2024 .
