Essay on Healthy Lifestyle

The top secret of being physically fit is adopting a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, taking good care of self, healthy sleep habits, and having a physically active daily routine. Lifestyle is the most prevailing factor that affects one’s fitness level. A person leading a sedentary lifestyle has a low fitness level whereas living a healthier life not only makes a person fit but also extends life. Good health has a direct impact on our personality. A person with a good and healthy lifestyle is generally more confident, self-assured, sociable, and energetic.

A good and healthy lifestyle allows one to relish and savor all the pleasures in life without any complications. Even all the wealth is less valuable when compared to sound health. Having all the luxuries in the world does not fulfill its purpose when one is continuously ill, depressed, or suffering from a significant health complication. A healthy person has a clear and calm perception of everything without prejudice. His actions and decisions are more practical and logical and are hence more successful in life.

A good habit is a key factor for a healthy lifestyle. To maintain a stable body and mind, one needs to inculcate good habits. Waking up early in the morning, regularly exercising or a good morning walk helps to keep our body energetic and refresh our mind. Maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet throughout the day is vital for maintaining a good lifestyle. Too much indulgence in alcohol or smoking excessively is not at all appropriate for a healthy lifestyle.

Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is important for maintaining a good lifestyle. When we are self-disciplined then we are more organized and regular in maintaining good health. A disciplined life is a regulated life. A man without discipline is a ship without a rudder. Discipline needs self-control. One who cannot control himself can seldom control others. The level of discipline and perseverance largely determines a person’s success. Self-discipline is the act of disciplining one’s own feelings, desires, etc. especially with the intention of improving oneself. It strengthens our willpower. The stronger our will power the positive will be our decision. It enables us to conquer our own self.

Punctuality

Punctuality is the habit of doing things on time. It is the characteristic of every successful person and everyone must observe punctuality in order to win success in life. Punctuality is necessary for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It should become a habit with us. A punctual person is able to fulfill all his responsibilities and hence is treated with respect in society. It is needed in every walk of life.

Diet is an important component for overall fitness and works best in combination with exercise. A balanced diet and exercise regularly help to maintain good health. It is necessary to reduce weight if one is overweight or obese, failing which one cannot be physically fit for long. For people with obesity, more exercise and a strict regime are necessary, preferably under guidance. There are many ways of making the diet healthier.

Use less sugar and salt while cooking food.

Use less oil while cooking. Avoid deep-frying as much as possible.

Eat more fruits daily. They provide more vitamins and minerals to our bodies.

Add sprouts of gram and moong dal to at least one meal in a day. Add fiber to your diet. Use whole grains instead of polished cereals. Eat lots of salad and yogurt.

Eat fermented food regularly. Fermented food contains many useful bacteria that help in the process of digestion.

Prevention of Lifestyle Diseases

By adopting a healthy lifestyle one can avoid lifestyle diseases. The following are some ways in which we can prevent lifestyle diseases.

Eat a balanced diet that contains important nutrients. One must include more fresh fruits and green vegetables in the diet. Refrain from eating junk food. Stay away from foods that contain large amounts of salt or sugar.

Exercise regularly. Spend more time outdoors and do activities such as walking, running, swimming, and cycling.

One must avoid overindulgence in alcohol, junk food, smoking, and addiction to drugs and medicines.

Avoid spending too much on modern gadgets like mobile phones, laptops, televisions, etc. Spend time on these gadgets for short intervals of time only.

Set a healthy sleeping routine for every day. Waking early in the morning and going to bed early at night should be a daily habit. Lead an active life.

Unhealthy Lifestyle

Bad food habits and an unhealthy lifestyle such as less or no physical activity may lead to several diseases like obesity, high blood pressure or hypertension, diabetes, anemia, and various heart diseases. An unhealthy lifestyle reduces productivity and creativity in a person. It also adversely affects moods and relationships. It leads to depression and anxiety in human beings.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle not only makes a person confident and productive but also drives him to success. A person with a healthy lifestyle will enjoy both personal and social life.

250 Words Essay on Healthy Lifestyle

The concept of a healthy lifestyle is not just about eating nutritious food and engaging in physical activities. It is a holistic approach to wellbeing that includes mental, emotional, and social health.

Importance of Balanced Nutrition

Nutrition plays a pivotal role in maintaining health. Consuming a balanced diet rich in proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fiber helps in boosting immunity, energy levels, and overall physical health. However, it’s not just about what you eat but also how and when you eat. Mindful eating and maintaining a regular eating schedule can significantly contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

Physical Activity and Its Impact

Physical activity is another cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise helps in maintaining a healthy weight, reducing the risk of chronic diseases, and promoting mental health. It does not necessarily mean spending hours in the gym; even simple activities like walking, cycling, or yoga can have profound benefits.

Mental and Emotional Wellbeing

Mental and emotional health is often overlooked in the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. Stress management, sufficient sleep, and nurturing relationships contribute to emotional health, which in turn impacts physical health.

Social Health: An Integral Part

Social health is about maintaining healthy relationships and having a sense of connection and belonging. It involves balancing personal needs with those of the community and environment, fostering empathy, and building strong support systems.

In conclusion, a healthy lifestyle is a multifaceted concept. It involves balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, mental and emotional wellbeing, and social health. By adopting such a lifestyle, one can significantly enhance their quality of life and longevity.

500 Words Essay on Healthy Lifestyle

The concept of a healthy lifestyle is not just about eating nutritious food and getting enough physical exercise. It encompasses a much broader spectrum of behaviors that contribute to physical, mental, and social well-being. A healthy lifestyle is a conscious choice that one makes and is a crucial step towards a fulfilling life.

The Pillars of a Healthy Lifestyle

The foundation of a healthy lifestyle rests on four pillars: a balanced diet, regular physical activity, adequate rest, and mental well-being.

A balanced diet is not about strict limitations or depriving yourself of the foods you love. It’s about feeling great, having more energy, and stabilizing your mood. Consuming a variety of foods, in the right proportions, can help prevent diseases and maintain an optimal body weight.

Regular physical activity is another cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle. It can help prevent chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, and stroke. It also promotes mental health, reduces stress, and improves sleep.

Adequate rest is often overlooked in discussions about a healthy lifestyle. However, it is just as important as diet and exercise. Lack of sleep can lead to a range of health problems, including obesity, diabetes, and even heart disease.

Lastly, mental well-being is integral to living a healthy lifestyle. It involves psychological resilience, positive self-perception, and an overall sense of satisfaction with one’s life.

The Role of Mindfulness in a Healthy Lifestyle

Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. It is a powerful tool to help manage stress, enhance emotional intelligence, and improve overall health. Incorporating mindfulness into daily routines can significantly contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

Challenges and Solutions

Despite the known benefits of a healthy lifestyle, many individuals face challenges in maintaining one. These challenges include lack of time, inability to stick to a routine, lack of motivation, and limited access to healthy foods or fitness facilities.

However, these obstacles can be overcome with proper planning and commitment. For instance, one can manage time by prioritizing and scheduling tasks. Motivation can be boosted by setting realistic goals and celebrating small victories. Access to healthy foods and fitness facilities can be improved by advocating for community resources or finding creative ways to stay active and eat healthily.

In conclusion, a healthy lifestyle is a valuable asset to one’s life. It not only improves physical health but also contributes significantly to mental and social well-being. Despite the challenges, with determination, discipline, and a positive outlook, everyone can lead a healthy lifestyle. It is a journey, not a destination, and each small step towards it is a step towards a healthier, happier life.

What are the secrets to a happy life, in following 268 men for their entire lives, the harvard grant study has discovered why some of them turned out happier than others..

At 19 years old, Godfrey Minot Camille was a tall redheaded boy with a charming manner who planned to enter medicine or the ministry. In 1938, Camille enrolled in a study that would follow him for the rest of his life, along with 267 other Harvard College sophomores deemed by recruiters as likely to lead “successful” lives.

Only gradually did the study’s staff discover that the allegedly “normal” Godfrey was an intractable and unhappy hypochondriac. On the 10th anniversary of his joining the study, each man was given an A through E rating anticipating future personality stability. When it was Godfrey’s turn, he was assigned an “E.”

But if Godfrey Camille was a disaster as a young man, by the time he was an old one he had become a star. His occupational success; measurable enjoyment of work, love, and play; his health; the depth and breadth of his social supports; the quality of his marriage and relationship to his children—all that and more combined to make him one of the most successful of the surviving men of the study. What made the difference? How did this sorry lad develop such an abundant capacity for flourishing?

secret of healthy life essay

These are the kinds of questions that can only be answered by a study that follows participants over the course of a lifetime, and the study in which Camille participated—known as the Grant Study , because it was originally funded by entrepreneur and philanthropist William T. Grant—is now the longest longitudinal study of biosocial human development ever undertaken, and is still on-going. Through reviews of Camille’s and his Harvard peers’ medical records, coupled with periodic interviews and questionnaires exploring their careers, relationships, and mental well-being, the study’s goal was to identify the key factors to a happy and healthy life.

I arrived at the Grant Study in 1966. I became its director in 1972, a position I held until 2004. The single most personally rewarding facet of my involvement with the Grant Study has been the chance to interview these men over four decades. I’ve found that no single interview, no single questionnaire is ever adequate to reveal the complete man, but the mosaic of interviews produced over many years can be most revealing.

This was certainly the case with Camille, whose life illuminates two of the most important lessons from the 75-year, 20-million-dollar Grant Study. One is that happiness is love. Virgil, of course, needed only three words to say the same thing, and he said it a very long time ago— Omnia vincit amor , or “love conquers all”—but unfortunately he had no data to back them up. The other lesson is people really can change. As we see in the example of this man’s life, they really can grow.

Up from a bleak childhood

Camille’s parents were upper class, but they were also socially isolated and pathologically suspicious. A child psychiatrist who reviewed Camille’s record 30 years later thought his childhood one of the bleakest in the Study.

Unloved and not yet grown into a sense of autonomy, Camille as a student adopted the unconscious survival strategy of frequent reports to the college infirmary. No evidence of tangible illness was found at most of his visits, and in his junior year a usually sympathetic college physician dismissed him with the disgusted comment, “This boy is turning into a regular psychoneurotic.” Camille’s constant complaining was an immature coping style. It didn’t connect with other people, and it kept them from connecting with him; they didn’t see his real underlying suffering and just got angry at his apparent manipulations.

After graduation from medical school, the newly minted Dr. Camille attempted suicide. The Study consensus at the time of his 10-year personality assessment was that he was “not fitted for the practice of medicine,” and, unloved as he was, he found taking care of other people’s needs overwhelming. But several sessions with a psychiatrist gave him a different view of himself. He wrote to the Study, “My hypochondriasis has been mainly dissipated. It was an apology, a self-inflicted punishment for aggressive impulses.”

Then, at age 35, he had a life-changing experience. He was hospitalized for 14 months in a veterans’ hospital with pulmonary tuberculosis. Ten years later he recalled his first thought on being admitted: “It’s neat; I can go to bed for a year, do what I want, and get away with it.”

“I was glad to be sick,” he confessed. His illness, a real one, finally ended up giving him the emotional security that his childhood—along with his hypochondriacal symptoms and subsequent careful neutrality—never had. Camille felt his time in the hospital almost like a religious rebirth. “Someone with a capital ‘S’ cared about me,” he wrote. “Nothing has been so tough since that year in the sack.”

Released from the hospital, Dr. Camille became an independent physician, married, and grew into a responsible father and clinic leader. His coping style changed as the decades passed. His transitional reliance on displacement (the unconscious avoidance of emotional intensity) was replaced by the still more empathic involuntary coping mechanisms of altruism and generativity (a wish to nurture others’ development). He was now functioning as a giving adult. Whereas at 30 he had hated his dependent patients, by 40 his adolescent fantasy of caring for others had become a reality. In vivid contrast with his post-graduation panic, he now reported that what he liked most about medicine was that “I had problems and went to others, and now I enjoy people coming to me.”

When I was 55 and Camille was almost 70, I asked him what he had learned from his children. “You know what I learned from my children?” he blurted out, tears in his eyes. “I learned love!” Many years later, having seized a serendipitous opportunity to interview his daughter, I believed him. I have interviewed many Grant Study children, but this woman’s love for her father remains the most stunning that I have encountered among them.

At age 75, Camille took the opportunity to describe in greater detail how love had healed him:

Before there were dysfunctional families, I came from one. My professional life hasn’t been disappointing—far from it—but the truly gratifying unfolding has been into the person I’ve slowly become: comfortable, joyful, connected, and effective. Since it wasn’t widely available then, I hadn’t read that children’s classic, The Velveteen Rabbit , which tells how connectedness is something we must let happen to us, and then we become solid and whole. As that tale recounts tenderly, only love can make us real. Denied this in boyhood for reasons I now understand, it took me years to tap substitute sources. What seems marvelous is how many there are and how restorative they prove. What durable and pliable creatures we are, and what a storehouse of goodwill lurks in the social fabric. . . I never dreamed my later years would be so stimulating and rewarding.

That convalescent year, transformative though it was, was not the end of Camille’s story. Once he grasped what had happened, he seized the ball and ran with it, straight into a developmental explosion that went on for 30 years. A professional awakening and a spiritual one; a wife and two children of his own; two psychoanalyses, a return to the church of his early years—all these allowed him to build for himself the loving surround that he had so missed as a child, and to give to others out of its riches.

At 82, Godfrey Minot Camille had a fatal heart attack while mountain climbing in the Alps, which he dearly loved. His church was packed for the memorial service. “There was a deep and holy authenticity about the man,” said the Bishop in his eulogy. His son said, “He lived a very simple life, but it was very rich in relationships.” Yet prior to age 30, Camille’s life had been essentially barren of relationship. Folks change. But they stay the same, too. Camille had spent his years before the hospital looking for love, too. It just took him a while to learn how to do it well.

How to flourish

In 2009, I delved into the Grant Study data to establish a Decathlon of Flourishing—a set of ten accomplishments that covered many different facets of success. Two of the items in the Decathlon had to do with economic success, four with mental and physical health, and four with social supports and relationships. Then I set out to see how these accomplishments correlated, or didn’t, with three gifts of nature and nurture—physical constitution, social and economic advantage, and a loving childhood.

The results were as clear-cut as they were startling.

We found that measures of family socioeconomic status had no significant correlation at all with later success in any of these areas. Alcoholism and depression in family histories proved irrelevant to flourishing at 80, as did longevity. The sociability and extraversion that were so highly valued in the initial process of selecting the men did not correlate with later flourishing either. In contrast with the weak and scattershot correlations among the biological and socioeconomic variables, a loving childhood—and other factors like empathic capacity and warm relationships as a young adult—predicted later success in all ten categories of the Decathlon . What’s more, success in relationships was very highly correlated with both economic success and strong mental and physical health, the other two broad areas of the Decathlon.

In short, it was a history of warm intimate relationships—and the ability to foster them in maturity—that predicted flourishing in all aspects of these men’s lives.

We found, for instance, that there was no significant difference between the maximum earned incomes of the men with IQs of 110–115 and the incomes of the men with IQs of 150-plus. On the other hand, men with warm mothers took home $87,000 more than those men whose mothers were uncaring. The men who had good sibling relationships when young were making an average of $51,000 more a year than the men who had poor relationships with their siblings. The 58 men with the best scores for warm relationships made an average of $243,000 a year; in contrast, the 31 men with the worst scores for relationships earned an average maximum salary of $102,000 a year.

So when it comes to late-life success—even when success is measured strictly in financial terms—the Grant Study finds that nurture trumps nature. And by far the most important influence on a flourishing life is love. Not early love exclusively, and not necessarily romantic love. But love early in life facilitates not only love later on, but also the other trappings of success, such as high income and prestige. It also encourages the development of coping styles that facilitate intimacy, as opposed to the ones that discourage it. The majority of the men who flourished found love before 30, and the data suggests that was why they flourished.

We can’t choose our childhoods, but the story of Godfrey Minot Camille reveals that bleak ones do not doom us. If you follow lives long enough, people adapt and they change, and so do the factors that affect healthy adjustment. Our journeys through this world are filled with discontinuities. Nobody in the Study was doomed at the outset, but nobody had it made, either. Inheriting the genes for alcoholism can turn the most otherwise blessed golden boy into a skid row bum. Conversely, an encounter with a very dangerous disease liberated the pitiful young Dr. Camille from a life of loneliness and dependency. Who could have foreseen, when he was 29 and the Study staff ranked him in the bottom three percent of the cohort in personality stability, that he would die a happy, giving, and beloved man?

Only those who understand that happiness is only the cart; love is the horse. And perhaps those who recognize that our so-called defense mechanisms, our involuntary ways of coping with life, are very important indeed. Before age 30, Camille depended on narcissistic hypochondriasis to cope with his life and his feelings; after 50 he used empathic altruism and a pragmatic stoicism about taking what comes. The two pillars of happiness revealed by the 75-year-old Grant Study—and exemplified by Dr. Godfrey Minot Camille—are love and a mature coping style that does not push love away.

Above all, the Study reveals how men like Dr. Camille adapted themselves to life and adapted their lives to themselves—a process of maturation that unfolds over time. Indeed, I have always regarded the Grant Study as an instrument that permitted the study of time, much as the telescope uncovered the mysteries of the galaxies and the microscope enabled the study of microbes.

For researchers, prolonged follow-up can be a rock upon which fine theories founder, but it also can be a means of discovering robust and enduring truth. At the outset of the Study in 1939, it was thought that men with masculine body types—broad shoulders and a slender waist—would succeed the most in life. That turned out to be one of many theories demolished by the Study as it has followed the lives of these men. To benefit from the lessons both of the Grant Study and of life requires persistence and humility, for maturation makes liars of us all.

The secret to good health is no secret. So why is it so hard to achieve?

By Laura Williamson, American Heart Association News

Lea en español

It ought to be a no-brainer, so to speak: Research has pinpointed seven ways people can achieve ideal heart and brain health. And – bonus – if Americans did those things, they also could help prevent many other chronic illnesses.

But most people don't, at least not consistently. What's stopping them?

"Most of these steps require a great deal of self-regulation and self-control," said Dolores Albarracin, a professor of psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "It's not just getting one thing done, like going to get a vaccine, where you can do it and forget about it for a year."

Volumes of research point to at least seven behaviors , called Life's Simple 7, that can dramatically lower the burden of heart disease, stroke and dementia. Not smoking, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, and keeping blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels in a healthy range have the potential to collectively wipe out a vast majority of heart disease and stroke and prevent or delay a significant number of dementias.

Failing to take these steps increases the risk for chronic illness of all types. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 6 in 10 adults in the United States have at least one chronic illness , while 4 in 10 have two or more. In addition to illnesses of the heart and brain, these include cancer, lung disease, kidney disease and diabetes.

"If it were simple, heart disease event rates would be down by 80% since roughly 80% of heart disease is preventable," as are 80% of strokes, said Dr. Roger Blumenthal, the Kenneth Jay Pollin Professor of Cardiology and director of the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in Baltimore. Blumenthal is co-author of a joint report by the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology on the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

Part of the problem, said Blumenthal, is the pace of modern life and the number of responsibilities people already are juggling.

"It's hard for people to stay motivated in the society in which we live and to make time for things like exercise," he said. "We have to repackage all the knowledge we have and put it into actionable, shorter messages and provide resources that motivate people."

Blumenthal recommends breaking down goals into smaller actions that feel achievable. For example, if finding large blocks of time to exercise seems too hard, he advises people to weave 10-minute exercise breaks throughout their day.

Likewise, with weight loss. "Ask yourself where you can cut out 300-400 calories a day. Decrease portion sizes. Slow down your pace of eating."

People often have greater success with taking medication to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, Blumenthal said.

"It's easier for people to take a pill after they've brushed their teeth in the morning than making the sustained efforts and setting aside 20-minute sessions for brisk activities or exercising more control over dietary choices."

But even that isn't always simple.

Inadequate health insurance or lack of access to care can make it difficult for people to take medications regularly, said Dr. Tracy Madsen, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. These inequities are most prevalent among those from marginalized racial and ethnic groups who often bear the biggest burden of disease.

"Across the United States, Black and Hispanic communities are dealing with a disproportionate burden of economic instability," she said, which has been heightened by the pandemic. "People who lose their jobs and then their insurance have no way to pay for needed medications."

They also may face other inequities, such as a lack of easy access to recreational space or convenient, affordable places to buy healthy foods.

Another big reason people struggle is many steps toward better health involve cutting out, or cutting back, pleasurable activities, Albarracin said.

"You're not asking people to simply incorporate a new habit, you're also asking them to fight something that has been quite rewarding in the past," she said. "We eat yummy foods because they are yummy."

Albarracin led a study published in Health Psychology Review that analyzed 150 research reports about healthy behavior change. It found people were more likely to succeed in making changes if they stuck to one of two similar actions – focusing on things they needed to do or things they needed to stop doing – but not both.

"The way our psychological makeup works is we tend to be in action mode or inaction mode," she said. "Exercising more and eating more vegetables are both actions moving in the same direction, versus exercising more and eating less fat, which is one positive thing and one negative thing."

It's also easier for people to make changes in two associated activities, she said. For example, people who smoke may do so when they are drinking alcohol. In that case, it's easier to quit doing both than just one, because one triggers the other.

Changing behavior can require reframing thinking and goals, Albarracin said.

"There are ways to use questions to stop yourself. If you're at a restaurant and the server brings a tray of desserts and asks you which one you want, ask yourself instead if you should be eating dessert at all. Introduce the idea of 'no' being an answer."

Another skill is to make lists of things to stop doing instead of things to do, she said. "We need to start learning how to reframe our goals. We are used to thinking in terms of being rewarded for what we do, not what we don't do."

In the end, making structural changes can be more effective than solely relying on willpower. For example, "if I have to walk to work, that's going to introduce more exercise into my life and will be much more successful than betting on willpower," Albarracin said. "Sometimes you have to outsmart yourself by removing some of your choices."

How to Live a Long, Healthy Life

The importance of sleep and mental health..

Many of us aspire to live a long and healthy life, enjoying an active and independent lifestyle as we age. The good news is that longevity is not entirely out of your control. There are practical steps you can take to increase your chances of living longer and having a long healthspan.

Two of the most important factors for living a long, healthy life are getting restorative sleep and maintaining good mental health.

Restorative Sleep for a Longer Lifespan and Healthspan

Restorative sleep plays a crucial role in achieving optimal health and longevity. It involves progressing through the five sleep stages. These stages allow your body to repair itself and rebalance hormones . Adults should aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Uninterrupted and deep sleep cycles within this time frame indicate that you're reaping the rewards of restorative sleep.

Benefits of Restorative Sleep

  • Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases: When you sleep, your body engages in repair and hormone balance. This leads to a decreased risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Sleep also aids in regulating blood sugar levels and blood pressure. Furthermore, quality sleep enhances immune function, making you less vulnerable to infectious illnesses.
  • Brain Health: Sleep is essential for brain health. During sleep, your brain eliminates toxins accumulated throughout the day. Inadequate sleep disrupts this cleansing process, resulting in toxin buildup. Over time, this accumulation could contribute to neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Prioritizing quality sleep acts as a safeguard for your brain's well-being as you age.
  • Enhanced Mood and Reduced Stress : Sleep has a big impact on how you feel because it controls chemicals and hormones in your brain. Restorative sleep helps make serotonin; a chemical that makes you feel good. It also helps control stress hormones like cortisol. Elevated cortisol levels can make you feel anxious and irritable. Lack of sleep can contribute to mood disorders like depression , stress, and anxiety .
  • Boost Energy and Immunity: After a good night's sleep, you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day. Getting enough sleep keeps your energy up and gives your immune system what it needs to function. Not getting enough sleep disrupts the body's recovery process, leading to fatigue and a higher chance of getting sick.

Prioritizing restorative sleep is essential to fully enjoy the health benefits that sleep offers.

Mental Health's Role in Longevity and Increased Healthspan

Conversations about lifespan and healthspan have traditionally centered on physical health. But the significance of mental well-being is now acknowledged as pivotal for extending life and enriching its quality. Mental health encompasses our emotions, thoughts, and how we interact with others. It affects our well-being, shaping how we live our lives. Experiencing depression, loneliness, and stress can shorten lifespans and diminish the quality of life. Taking care of our mental health is as important as looking after our physical health for a long and happy life.

Here’s how improving mental health influences longevity:

  • Decreases Risk of Physical Illness: Mental health disorders amplify chronic disease risk. For example, depression promotes inflammation and compromises immune function. This makes people more likely to develop illnesses like heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. Managing mental health reduces disease risk factors.
  • Improves Adherence to Medical Treatment: For people with mental health challenges, it can be tough to follow treatment plans. Symptoms like low motivation and energy make it hard to maintain medications and lifestyle changes. Good mental health helps you take care of your physical self.
  • Reduces Unhealthy Behaviors: Mental health issues often lead to risky and unhealthy habits. These habits, such as smoking , unhealthy eating, and lack of exercise, can harm your health and lifespan. Taking care of your mental health can help reduce these harmful behaviors.
  • Averts Social Isolation : Feeling alone and not having enough social connections are becoming bigger health concerns. Mental health issues can lead to isolation from others. This isolation can make mental health problems worse and also affect physical health. Having social connections is good for both your mind and body, helping you live longer and better.

There is a strong mind-body connection when it comes to longevity. Seeking help for depression, anxiety, loneliness, and other mental health issues can have profound positive effects on your healthspan and lifespan.

Sleep Strategies for a Long and Healthy Life

Polina Kovaleva/Pexels

Given the myriad benefits of sleep for longevity, achieving restorative sleep should be a priority.

  • Stick to a set sleep schedule, even on weekends. Keeping a consistent bedtime and wake time regulates your circadian rhythm for better rest.
  • Develop a relaxing pre-bed routine like reading or taking a bath to wind down each night. Calming activities cue the body that it's time for sleep.
  • Limit exposure to screens before bed. The blue light emitted from electronics disrupts natural melatonin production.
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol , heavy meals, and exercise close to bedtime. These can interfere with sleep.
  • Make sure your bedroom is cool, dark, and quiet. Block out excess light and noise for uninterrupted sleep.
  • Invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows. The right sleep environment sets you up for restful sleep.

If you struggle with insomnia or sleep issues, speak with your doctor. They can assess for underlying causes and recommend treatment options. Establishing healthy sleep patterns may require consistent effort, but the long-term benefits for longevity are well worth it.

Ways To Improve Mental Health for Longevity and a Longer Healthspan

Here are effective, evidence-based strategies to nurture your mental health and extend your healthspan:

  • Stay Active: Engaging in aerobic exercise triggers neurotransmitters that elevate mood and ease stress. Aim for 20 to 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily.
  • Stay Social: Spend time with friends, family, and your community to fight off feeling lonely.
  • Relax: Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness , meditation , yoga, and tai chi are effective in managing stress and anxiety.
  • Get Outdoors: Being in nature, getting sunlight, and breathing fresh air can really help your mental health.
  • Challenge Your Mind: Activities like reading, puzzles, crafts, or playing musical instruments help keep your brain sharp as you get older.
  • Give Back: Volunteering and helping others can make you feel good and connected to your community.

Prioritizing emotional well-being will have major dividends when it comes to your longevity. A holistic approach is ideal—combine lifestyle strategies with professional treatment if necessary.

Optimizing sleep and mental health can significantly increase your healthspan and longevity. Luckily, there are many evidence-based ways to improve your sleep and strengthen your mental health. What’s the Secret to a Long, Healthy Life? Staying in School, a Study Finds

secret of healthy life essay

  • Share article

Keeping children in school could literally lengthen their lives as adults, according to a massive international research analysis published this week in the journal The Lancet Public Health.

An international team of researchers analyzed more than 40 years of data on adult mortality from more than 600 studies in 59 countries, including the United States. They controlled for adults’ age, sex, and marital status, as well as their socioeconomic and demographic backgrounds.

For each additional year of schooling, mortality for adults younger than 50 fell by nearly 3 percent, with smaller but still significant benefits for older adults, too.

Completing 18 years of education—the equivalent of K-12 plus a four-year college degree—cut adult mortality by 34 percent. That’s similar to the level of health protection linked to eating a healthy, vegetable-heavy diet and getting plenty of exercise.

“It also is worth keeping in mind that we’re looking across all countries, and there are many countries in the world where completion of primary school is not really to be taken for granted,” said Emmanuela Gakidou, a study author and a professor of health-metrics sciences and a co-founder of the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington. “So, the evidence that we have available suggests that every single year of schooling helps.”

The current analysis did not look at why more years of schooling lower the risk of death, but education has been linked to health in a variety of ways, including increasing children’s access to regular immunizations and health care, boosting professional and financial opportunities, building social networks and healthy lifestyle habits, and teaching people to understand and process health information.

The study suggests not going to school places as great a burden on the average adult’s health as drinking five alcoholic drinks a day or smoking half a pack of cigarettes a day for a decade.

Helping students understand these long-term links between education and health could motivate those at risk of dropping out of school, said Linn Gould, the executive director of Just Health Action in Seattle, a program to teach health education and equity to high school and college students. She was not involved in the study.

“A lot of the kids that I work with, their families need them to make money, so a lot of them are discouraged from going to school,” Gould said. “I think that kids would like to know these things, particularly as they’re making decisions about what to do and what their opinions are about education.”

The researchers analyzed older and newer studies, as well as those across industrialized and developing countries, and Gakidou said she was surprised to find the benefits of schooling have stayed fairly consistent over time and across different countries. More time in school showed similar benefits for men and women and for those from different socio-demographic groups.

“It’s not just the quality of the education,” Gakidou said, “but it’s also the going to school, navigating the school system, the social interactions in addition to the learning that happens in the classroom.”

While this study looked only at adults, prior research has found that the benefits of education extend to the next generation, too, with every additional year of parents’ schooling reducing their children’s risk of death under age 5 by 3 percent for moms and 1.6 percent for dads.

The research team next plans to dig into the connection between educational attainment and specific kinds of health issues, like heart disease or obesity, along with how pandemic-related academic disruptions and learning loss might be affecting global health.

Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle Essay (550+ Words)

The greatest wealth is our own health. In today’s fast-paced world, where the pursuit of material wealth often takes precedence, it is crucial to recognize that the greatest wealth we possess is our own health. While a healthy body can contribute to financial success, the reverse is not true—an affluent individual cannot easily attain good health. The demands of modern life and the accompanying stress have been linked to various medical conditions, particularly heart and neurological problems. Therefore, adopting a healthy lifestyle becomes paramount, as a healthy lifestyle assists an individual to keep a positive attitude toward work and life in general.

One of the fundamental pillars of a healthy lifestyle is a balanced diet that supports overall well-being. A nutritious diet consists of essential components such as liquids, proteins, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and calories. We must eat fresh fruits, vegetables, salads, dairy products, and other wholesome foods at regular intervals. Additionally, meals should be consumed at fixed times, in appropriate quantities, and should consist of well-cooked and hygienic ingredients. Avoiding fried and fatty foods, excessive spices, and roadside eating helps minimize potential health risks. Maintaining a sufficient gap between meals allows for proper digestion.

Physical activity is another integral aspect of a healthy lifestyle. Engaging in regular exercise and incorporating daily physical activities contribute to overall fitness. Alongside exercise, adequate rest and sleep are essential for rejuvenation . A clean and healthy environment, fresh air, access to clean water, personal hygiene, and drinking an ample amount of water—approximately 7-8 glasses per day—further support good health. These practices help regulate blood pressure, supply vital nutrients efficiently, and enhance the body’s immunity against infections and diseases.

The importance of health over wealth should not be underestimated. Splurging on indulgences like junk food or entertainment might provide temporary satisfaction but offers no real advantage. Being physically and mentally healthy helps an individual to be socially and financially healthy as well. A healthy person possesses greater vitality, energy, and efficiency, while an affluent yet unhealthy individual easily succumbs to fatigue and loses out on life’s true wealth—health.

A healthy individual can achieve financial success due to their motivation, interest, and higher levels of concentration. While money facilitates a healthy lifestyle, it is good health that truly allows for a happy and peaceful existence. Therefore, it is imperative for everyone to prioritize a healthy lifestyle, steering clear of bad habits and unhealthy choices.

By nurturing both physical and mental health, individuals can excel in their personal and professional lives, regardless of their chosen vocation. The significance of maintaining good health cannot be overstated. Being healthy isn’t only the condition of being free of disease, ailment, or injury but also being happy physically, mentally, socially, intellectually, and financially. Good health is not only a prerequisite for a contented life but also nature’s most precious gift.

In conclusion, the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle should take precedence in our lives. While material wealth may hold importance, it pales in comparison to the invaluable asset of good health. By prioritizing nutritious diets, regular exercise, sufficient rest, and adopting healthy habits, individuals can enhance their overall well-being, leading to a happier and more fulfilling existence.

7 Secrets to a Healthy and Happy Life

I’ve had the great good fortune of living a long, healthy, and happy life. I’ve also conducted years of research on how to help my patients do the same. And, because I believe that health and happiness increase when shared, I recently summarized my 7 Secrets to a Healthy and Happy Life in a book of the same name.

These secrets for health and happiness don’t require a trip to the doctor; nor do they require expensive products or treatments. They do, however, take investment: investment in taking care of yourself —the once-in-a-lifetime unique combination of DNA, molecules, talents, and abilities that is you.

I believe that we’re all capable of health and happiness and that the two are inextricably connected. Unfortunately, one of the most common barriers to both is stress —especially the 24-hour, all-pervasive stress of modern living, Cultural Stress.

Cultural Stress causes chronic, low-level inflammation, which is linked to virtually all of the degenerative diseases and conditions associated with aging—from Alzheimer’s to cardiovascular disease to wrinkles! Chronic inflammation is also associated with depression and anxiety.

While we can’t change the cultural matrix in which we all live, we can change our response to it. This is the underlying foundation for the 7 Secrets to a Healthy and Happy Life .

Secret #1 is this: Happiness lies within; it’s not “out there.” There is no external reward—a partner, a job, a house, a car, even winning the lottery—that can provide long-term fulfillment if you are ultimately not happy with yourself .

To cultivate happiness within, you must follow Secret #2: Honor yourself. So many of us underestimate our own worth because we’re caught up in the never-ending task of living up to others’ expectations. That’s a game you’ll never win, and it’s also a game that betrays the reason you were born: to be the one and only YOU.

You honor yourself by treating yourself well—mind, body, and spirit. That includes a healthy diet, regular exercise—preferably that you enjoy! —nourishing skincare, and feeding your inner self. For me, honoring my inner self means giving myself a creative outlet. Mine is painting, but the important question is: what’s yours?

Secret #3: Why have a bad day when you can have a good day? So much of what happens to us is beyond our control—from traffic jams to pandemic lockdowns. In fact, there are days when it seems that absolutely nothing goes right. But if we adopt the mindset that we’re going to have a good day anyway, no matter what, it’s amazing what can result. Transitions, after all, are the precursor to opportunity. And seeds that are planted underground, in the dark, are what give rise to flowers in the spring. Are there seeds being planted in your darkest days? Only you can cultivate them to find out.

Secret #4: Beware of creating your own stress. There’s enough of that provided by the world—everything from natural disasters to economic losses to the insatiable expectations of others. Don’t add to them by holding your own unfair expectations of yourself. One of the most common ways people do this is by spending too much time on social media, rather than in real-world relationships or their own satisfying pursuits. Unplug! Step outside! Go for a walk! Meet a friend! Pursue a hobby. Free yourself from solitary confinement!

Secret #5: Be imperfect; live longer. Perfectionism is one of the leading causes of self-imposed stress. Even though we know that perfection is impossible (no one can do everything right according to everyone’s standards every day of their lives), we often act as if we should be able to! We just don’t want to disappoint anyone, ever. Instead, we disappoint ourselves, continually. This adds to our stress, shortens our lives, and shortchanges our happiness. So what if you’re not perfect? Neither is anyone else! Strive for excellence, instead of perfection, and live longer and happier.

Secret #6: One key can open many doors. This secret is meant to encourage you to understand the root cause of the conditions standing between you and happiness. When you do, you will be surprised at how circumstances will begin to spiral positively, rather than negatively. For me, a key that changed the direction of my entire life was a conversation with a friend’s uncle, who encouraged me to go to medical school. At the time I was an engineering student—but wasn’t very happy in it. What a difference that conversation made!

For a patient whose story I describe in my book, the key that changed her entire life was this Insight card: Forgive yourself . Until she read that card, she hadn’t even realized that she was holding onto the past and all the disappointment and self-recriminations she felt about it. Forgiving herself set in motion a cascade of positive changes in her life.

Secret #7: Give yourself permission to… You fill in the blank! Give yourself permission to be healthy, happy, AND successful. You don’t need anyone else’s authorization. YOU are the author of your life. Be and do what fulfills the one-and-only you. You can even give yourself permission to throw away those diet books—like one of my patients did. Instead, she put herself on what she called a “whole life diet.” She organized her life around what made her happy—including her work, family, and social relationships—and as a side benefit, she also lost weight. In fact, when I saw her again a year later, in the produce section of the grocery store, she’d lost so much weight and seemed so much more relaxed and happier, that at first I didn’t recognize her! You can do the same; you just have to give yourself permission.

The Secrets Of A Happy Life

Happiness may have diverse meanings to diverse individuals. But regardless of how we define happiness, our distinct passions and life experiences contribute in making each one of us cheerful. Undoubtedly, the secrets on how to live a happy and healthy life depends on how we sort out all the factors that play an imperative role in accomplishing the level of happiness we desire for ourselves. Secrets to a happy life • For you to know how to live a contented life, you should know first the dissimilarity between what is right and what is wrong. Then, you have to choose to do things the right way. • You will also experience cheerfulness if you know how to be appreciative in everything that you get and in all the things that other folks do for you. One way of upholding your happiness is by memorizing how you were as a child. • Being kind is another advantageous tip on how to live a happy and healthy life. Committing ourselves to be sympathetic to others along with to ourselves brings a new pinnacle of joy and gusto to us. • Other suggestions on how to live a joyful life include having a copious social life by spending time with friends and making new ones, taking adequate time to rest after a tough day at work or in school, and chasing your goals for your individual life, relationships or for your profession. • There are varied sources of pleasure for every one of us. Some find pleasure in their preferred religion, some in their relations, and others in their occupations. Finding

Explain the Difference Between Narrow and Preference Hedonism. Which Is a More Plausible Theory of Happiness?

Narrow Hedonists assume, fasely, that pleasure and pain are two distinctive kinds of experience. Compare the pleasures of satisfying an intense thirst or lust, listening to music, solving an untellectual problem, reading a tradegy, and knowing that one’s child is happy. These varioous experiences do not contain any distinctive common quality. What pains and pleasures have in comon are their relations to our desires.

The Pursuit Of Happiness In The Declaration Of Independence

Happiness is an essential goal for most people. From books and expensive classes that teach people how to achieve happiness to the fundamental right of “the pursuit of happiness” in the Declaration of Independence, the importance of happiness is evident in society. This causes the rise to two fundamental questions: “How does one attain happiness?” and “,How does happiness create a meaningful life?” Both happiness and living a meaningful life are achieved simultaneously. The search for happiness and the factors that make it brings meaning to life. Happiness can stem from several factors such as wisdom and knowledge, savoring life and its experiences, and even suffering and pain. Analyzing these factors brings meaning to one’s life.

Analysis Of Living By Denise Levertov Living

Nowadays, it seems that we are too busy making a living that we tend to forget how to make a meaningful life. We are all dreaming of some magical things will happen instead of enjoying a beautiful little thing happens around us. The main thing is we don’t know if we will wake up tomorrow when we go to sleep tonight. Therefore, rather than hardly put off a living, reminds ourselves to enjoy every minute of our live as if it is the last minute. Denise Levertov, the author of the poem “Living”, illustrates the philosophy of living a simple life is to live entirely in the present without thinking about what will happen next in the future. The reason for that philosophy is because happiness is not what you have but how you feel toward what you have and how you accept it.

Some Thoughts On Playwriting By Thornton Wilder

In sum, life is supposed to be about more than happiness. We are supposed to do something important, adhere to some ethic, and serve a greater good. We live for a goal, a principle, or a destiny—not just for pleasure.1

Fun Explosion By Joseph Wood Krutch: An Analysis

There is no correct way to live life. There cannot be one approach to life, because there are multitudes of contrasting varieties of people walking the Earth. Although, a technique that can be applied individually to anyone’s life is balance. Like my dad says, too much of anything isn’t a good thing, everything is good in moderation. Everyone needs to find harmony in their lives between family, friends, love, hate, work, play, healthy food, junk food. Anytime that there is contrasting ways to live life, there needs to be balance. I do not know of anyone who has ever enacted a perfect balance of everything in life for longer than a day. Day to day, life changes and we cannot be so focused on one goal, whether the goal be complete fun all the time or working day in and day out, because we will miss the beauty of life. I believe to be successful, we need to find a balance that works for our life, and a person whose balance is compatible with ours. Having tunnel vision gets us nowhere. We need to see all aspects of life, the good, the bad, the fun, the unpleasant, the work and the pastime and work them together into a suitable

It 's More Than Being Happy, By Emily Smith

In life, there are many ways you can live, however, the manner in which you live is your choice. In most peoples’ lives, they want to leave this world and say that they were happy and enjoyed every single moment of it. People feel like if they lived a happy life, then that is all that matters. But what if life has more to do than just being happy, what if it was meant for you to change the world or the lives of others? If you changed the life of another person and made them happy, you made a difference. A happy life is a good one, but a meaningful life is fruitful.

All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten

For one to be happy, you need to simply, live a little. If you wake up, get dressed, go to work, come home, and go to bed everyday, you’re not going to have a fun, happy life. When Fulghum said play and work some everyday, he didn’t mean go play tag for an hour. Make the most out of everyday. Solely having a smile on your face can make your

Sacrifice in Life of Pi, Pi by Yann Martel Essays

Happiness is a key to everybodys life. Even the most depressed man on earth has a little happiness deep down inside. Its what keeps us striving to fulfil our needs and wants on an everyday basis. There is not one kid who does not get excited over a dollar to spend at the candy shop. What about the feeling of getting a promotion at your job, or even finding the cure for cancer. Being happy is not just healthy, but it is also rewarding for each and every individual. We strive to find anything that will turn a bad day to a good one. Individuals will compromise to attain their happiness. You can not get what you want without giving something first.

Epicurus And John Stuart Mill

In part one of our book, “The Good Life,” we studied five different philosopher’s viewpoints on what is needed in order for a person to have a good, fulfilling life. They all included the concepts of pleasure and happiness to some extent in their theories, but they all approached the ideas in different ways. The two hedonists we studied, Epicurus and John Stuart Mill, place heavy emphasis on the importance of pleasure. They both believe that pleasure is a necessity in the ideal life. Jean Kazez agreed with their viewpoints in her theory and said that happiness was a necessity for a good life. Epicurus and Mill also argue that there is nothing else that we ultimately desire beyond pleasure and that it is an intrinsic good.

Everyone has their own way to find happiness. As it is a feeling, each of us has our own range and different definitions about this term. We know that there are many joyful things

The Pursuit Of Happiness In 'The Alchemist'

When first asked, I believed that happiness was simply fulfilling a desire, but through topics discussed in class, I now realize that there is so much more to happiness. The road to happiness includes using virtues to receive gifts from God and from others. From the Beatitudes, we can learn to use what Jesus has taught us, to gain happiness in our everyday lives. We are taught that when we believe in God, mourn, be gentle, seek righteousness, show mercy,

Free Choice Of The Will By David Foster Wallace

Living a happy life is the goal that all humans strive for. All our actions point us to a direction that we believe will make us happy. However, we must make the right decisions to live a truly happy life. Our decisions we make are based on the desires we have. We can desire

Life : It Is The Ultimate Meaning Of Life

Many believe that being truly happy is the ultimate meaning of life.  If that were the case, achieving the meaning of life would be much simpler than most think.  In order to be truly happy, one must put that perspective into their life.  It is all about the outlook.  "Your life has no meaning." (Roth 15.)  Every single person who has, is, or ever will be alive and breathing is in control of their own life.  Every single person is in charge of what they want to do.  Whatever route is taken, is the choice of he who took that route.  Once this idea is programmed into someone's head, it is much easier for them to become more complete physically, mentally, and emotionally.  Professor Bernard Roth of Stanford University is a true eyeopener in this topic.  In his best-selling novel, The Achievement Habit: Stop Wishing, Start Doing, and Take Command of Your Life, Roth clearly demonstrates the idea of putting life into perspective with several detailed examples, observations, and demonstrations.  He makes it clear that to truly succeed in life, you must follow Aristotle's Rhetorical Triangle.  Using this Triangle, Roth clearly supports his statement "Your life has no meaning," through Ethos, Pathos, and Logos.

So, what is happiness? The research suggests that happiness is a combination of how satisfied you are with your life. For example, finding meaning in your work and how good you feel on a day to day basis. Both of these are relatively stable. Life changes and our mood changes, but our general happiness is more genetically determined than anything else. The good news is that with consistent effort, this can be offset. Think of it like you think about weight: if you eat how you want to

Secret of Health, Success and Power Lesson Summary Notes and Explanation in English Class 12th

Table of Contents

Introduction:

‘The Secret of Health, Success, and Power’ is an essay written by James Allen. It is an extract from his book ‘From Poverty to Power’. This essay, as the title suggests, talks about the ways from which one can attain good health, success, and power.

About the Author:

James Allen (1864-1912) was a notable English writer. He is best known for his inspirational and philosophical writing. Famous works of his include ‘By Ways of Blessedness’, ‘Majesty of Destiny’ and ‘As a Man Thinketh’.

The theme of this essay is inspirational. It details on how one can lead a happy, meaningful life. Health, success and power, the three main aspects according to the author, are what seems to be the key to attain this.

According to the author, health is the most important out of the three criterions he lays out. He feels that should people fall prey to sickness and diseases, one would not be able to attain success and power. For this, the author urges the readers to lead a life free of physical ailments and poisonous thoughts such as jealousy, suspicion and anger.

True health and success, according to the author, go hand in hand. In order to attain success, the author urges the reader to possess unwavering faith in the Supreme. He believes that this purity and faith is what would bring success and riches and ensure that people have a peaceful, joyous mind.

To attain power, the author asks the readers to attain ‘poise and passivity’. What he means by this is that one must remain stoic, calm and fearless in order to achieve success. A mind that is fit to command must be controlled, according to the author. Passion, he feels is not power. It is, rather, an abuse of power.

Conclusion:

The author concludes by stating how, above all, one must have a purpose, a single aim in life. He urges the readers to remain devout to this cause, to this ambition, come what may. Thus, in addition to an eager mind, the secret to life, according to him, is a pure heart, a well-ordered mind, an unfaltering faith and a wisely directed purpose.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Model Answer - A long and healthy life by Andrew Turner @ EnglishWithAnExpert.com

It may be an uncomfortable truth for some, but those who think exercise and diet are not fundamental to longevity are unfortunately mistaken. For the vast majority of people, eating well and moving more will directly result in living a longer, healthier and happier life.

The impact of our lifestyle choices on our health is extremely well documented. Since at least the 1960s, science has shown repeatedly that eating the right foods in the correct amount, combined with regular physical activity, reduces the risk of developing a wide range of health conditions and associated complications. The consensus among the scientific and medical community is clear, and to suggest otherwise is mere speculation.

Diet and exercise are interlinked; they go hand in hand. Poor nutrition inhibits the body from reaping the full benefits of physical activity, while a sedentary lifestyle often increases the desire to eat unhealthy foods – thus creating a vicious circle and accelerating weight gain. On the other hand, consuming healthy foods empowers the human body to perform better, thus making exercise more enjoyable – which, in turn, reduces cravings for junk food. With improved metabolism comes psychological benefits, too; among them are the release of endorphins, which contribute to a more positive mood, a reduction in stress and a higher quality of sleep.

To conclude, it is indisputable that lifestyle makes a significant impact on our health and wellbeing, both physically and psychologically. I therefore strongly disagree with the idea that you can live a long, healthy life without eating well and exercising often.

New research reveals young Australian adults largely base their happiness on whether they have positive and healthy relationships and meaningful and secure work.

A report by the  Youth Research Collective found when it comes to life satisfaction, there are other key contributors, including positive outlooks as well as the ability to appreciate one’s situation whilst acknowledging the role of luck and hard work.

22 Australians aged between 33 and 34 took part in the 2023 study, which explored young adults’ views on the determinants of life satisfaction and happiness.

The participants were chosen among a larger cohort of young Australians based on their reporting of a consistently high level of life satisfaction between 2018-2022 in the annual surveys of the  Life Patterns research program .

The findings underscore just how vital prosocial behaviour and social connections are to an individuals' overall well-being.

Co-author Dr Qunetin Maire said, “after completing school in 2005-06, this group of participants has been building lives through engagement with tertiary education and work for over 15 years. They have had the resources and support to seize opportunities to lead satisfying lives. Their views about what makes a happy life provide valuable insights into key factors associated with social fulfilment for the Australian generation often referred in popular terms as Gen Y or ‘millennials’.”

The following provides a summary of the four major contributors to life satisfaction discussed by participants:

  • Positive Relationships: Strong bonds with partners, family, colleagues, and friends provide emotional support and security, fostering happiness and resilience in times of uncertainty.
  • Meaningful Work: Finding purpose and fulfillment in one's work, being able to build a career, working in supportive environments and being able to achieve a healthy work-life balance.
  • Attitudes Towards Life: Embracing a forward-thinking and adaptable mindset, characterised by gratitude and appreciation for one’s life journey.
  • Luck and Effort: Balancing the role of luck with personal effort in shaping one's circumstances underscores the importance of holistic well-being, including financial security, education, and social connections.

Co-author Dr Eric Fu said, “the report highlights the growing importance of both personal and structural support networks in empowering young adults to construct lives that are subjectively meaningful and fulfilling. It sheds light on the aspects of life most valued by Gen Y Australians and can be used as an important point of reference when developing social and economic policies to support young people and young adults.”

Life Patterns gathers data on how three generations of Australians navigate our rapidly changing world. The data from the program has helped researchers understand what has happened to young people since they left school - where they have been, what their hopes and aspirations are for the future, and how they engage with shifting socioeconomic circumstances. The research is ongoing, with new data currently being collected as part of the 2024 survey.

You can access the report through the link.

Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut Documentary Explores How to Improve Your Microbiome - Netflix Tudum

Maya Okada Erickson using a blender in ‘Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut’

.css-1ylq17j em,.css-1ylq17j i{font-variation-settings:'ital' 1;}.css-1ylq17j strong,.css-1ylq17j b{font-weight:700;} In the Search for Wellness, Hack Your Health Goes Straight to the Gut

In recent years, doctors and scientists have studied the gut with renewed interest. Research has revealed that the digestive system is more than just a processing center for the food we eat, and that it has a much bigger effect on our overall health than previously thought. Issues as varied as stubborn weight gain and Parkinson’s disease can be linked to the gut, which means that understanding our digestive system — and, by extension, how it thrives or suffers based on what we eat — is crucial. In a new documentary,  Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut , German scientist Giulia Enders partners with colleagues to explain how the gut works — and how to make it work for you.

A scene from ‘Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut’

How does the gut work?

For those who need a quick biology refresher: The food we eat travels from the esophagus to the stomach before moving onto the small intestine and then the large intestine. Whatever is left is waste, and it’s expelled as poop. Approximately 70% of our immune system lives in our gut, and those microscopic organisms communicate with our other organs. “Our gut affects our whole body,” neuroscientist John Cryan says in the doc. “The gut really is the second brain.” Many conditions once thought to be determined by one’s genetics may actually be attributable to one’s microbiome.

A scene from ‘Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut’

How does our microbiome develop?

Like a bacterial fingerprint, everyone’s microbiome is unique. The bacteria that contribute to each person’s distinct microbiome are acquired the moment we’re born and evolve based on what we eat, who we touch, where we travel, and where we live. An “industrialized microbiome” has less diversity, which can arise from being born by C-section, eating processed foods, taking antibiotics, and more.

“The gut is flexible. It really changes when we change the way we eat,” Enders says in the doc. Transforming our diets for the better can reintroduce good bacteria we’ve lost, but it’s difficult to know how to make the right changes, because everyone’s gut is unique.

A scene from ‘Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut’

How can we learn about our own microbiome?

In  Hack Your Health , four test subjects discover what their stomach can tell them about their health. In order to gain insight into their microbiomes, they participate in a gut study that collects samples of poop to examine their gut bacteria. Of course, a lone sample can only reveal so much — when scientists have a variety of samples, they can compare new ones against the others to reveal how each stacks up against the collective.

How can we improve our gut health?

The science surrounding gut health is developing, but there are ways we can all improve our microbiomes. Studies show that the average American diet falls far short of the amount of fiber needed. But diversity within one’s diet is key. Dr. Annie Gupta recommends aiming to eat 20 to 30 fruits and vegetables per week. Some food for thought: “If you eat a lot of sugar, you get sugar-loving bugs. If you eat a lot of fat, you get a lot of fat-loving bugs,” says microbial ecologist Jack Gilbert. Diversifying our diets produce microbiomes that can do more for the rest of our bodies and minds.

Meet the Hack Your Health test subjects:

Maya Okada Erickson

Maya, the pastry chef who’s afraid of her own food.

For Maya Erickson, a Michelin-starred pastry chef and recovering anorexic, rebuilding her relationship with food has been difficult. When she eats “fun” foods, she feels ill — her diet now consists of vegetables and dietary supplements. “If I eat pretty much anything that’s not vegetables, I start getting stomach pains — which makes my job incredibly difficult,” she says in the doc.

Erickson’s gut health analysis revealed that while her consumption of greens has been helpful in boosting her health, a diverse diet (rather than a restrictive one) encourages a thriving microbiome. In order to reintroduce sweets, snacks, and other foods into her diet, Erickson’s advisors suggested she try them in small quantities to start — which allows her to enjoy new things without having an adverse reaction.

Daniell Koepke

Daniell, the doctoral student with chronic gut pain.

“It’s really hard for me to remember what it was like to eat food before it became associated with anxiety and pain and discomfort,” says Daniell Koepke, a doctoral student in clinical psychology. After indulging in a severely unbalanced diet during her undergraduate years, she began to suffer from symptoms that encompass a number of digestive conditions — IBS, constipation, and indigestion. After taking an excessive amount of antibiotics  in the past to maintain a sense of normalcy in her everyday life, the number of foods she can consume without incident has been whittled down to about a dozen.

Because of the drastic decrease in quality of life, Koepke has been experimenting with the burgeoning field of fecal microbial transplant, in which someone’s fecal matter is inserted into another person’s colon to introduce new bacteria to the microbiome. This process can do more than transfer bacteria that promotes healthy digestion, however. When Koepke used her brother’s fecal matter, she acquired his predilection to hormonal acne. When she used her boyfriend’s, she began to suffer from the depression he lives with.

Kimmie “Karma” Gilbert

Kimmie, the mom who struggles to lose weight.

“I’ve tried to control my weight all kinds of ways,” Kimmie Gilbert, a caregiver and single mother of three, says in the doc. “I would lose a lot, and I would gain a whole lot more.” Diets, weight loss medication, and expensive gym memberships have proven useless so far, but with a family history of diabetes to consider, Gilbert is eager to lose enough weight to ensure that she’ll be able to live a long life and be there for her children.

Gilbert’s gut analysis showed that her microbiome wasn’t very diverse. In particular, her sample lacked bacteria associated with losing weight and feeling full. Rather than attempting another diet, she decided on a long-term lifestyle change that prioritizes foods that complement her gut bacteria and are also enjoyable for everyone at the dinner table.

Takeru “Kobi” Kobayashi

Kobi, the competitive eater who can’t feel hunger.

Despite his profession as a competitive eater, Kobi Kobayashi no longer experiences hunger. “I hear people say they’re hungry, and they look very happy after they’ve eaten,” he says in  Hack Your Health . “I’m jealous of those people.” Though he can recall having cravings as a child, he can now go for three days without realizing that he hasn’t eaten. As a result, Kobayashi wonders if competitive eating has somehow damaged his body irreversibly.

After analyzing Kobayashi’s poop and also performing other tests, including scanning his brain’s responses to images of different foods, doctors informed him that his microbiome was actually in good shape, and his brain scans were normal. This revelation means that getting to the bottom of Kobayashi’s lack of hunger will be more complex, and in order to focus on restoring his health, he’s decided to quit competitive eating. He has “mixed feelings” about it, but after years of ignoring his body’s signals, he’s eager to see if he can repair his gut-brain connection.

Work stress is a pervasive problem. A 2022 Zippia report found that 83% of U.S. workers suffer from work-related stress, with 25% saying their job is the top stressor in their lives. Unrelenting stress has mental and physical consequences, raising your risk for chronic conditions like heart disease .

Whether you’re struggling with the symptoms of burnout , such as fatigue, agitation, and a loss of motivation, are stressed about the dynamic between you and your boss, or are wrestling with a lack purpose , it may be time to do some light reading to build a healthier relationship with work .

Fortune asked a range of mental health and workplace culture experts to recommend their go-to books that can help you reframe work stress, combat burnout, and feel happier.

Here are their top five.

“The authors demonstrate through research results, the broad and lasting impact our friends and family members, both immediate and those more distant from our inner circle, play on our physical and emotional health,” says Dr. Richard Safeer , the chief medical director of employee health and well-being at Johns Hopkins Medicine and author of A Cure for the Common Company. “This book opened my mind to the idea that the stress (and other emotions) of those around me at work was impacting my own stress levels. In part due to this book (and my mindfulness practice), I’m much more acutely aware of how the emotions of others might impact me.  However, now I am much less likely to let the negative emotions cause me to feel the same.”

The Upside of Stress by Kelly McGonigal

It put my relationship with work in greater perspective and resulted in me taking my own mental health more seriously,” says Ariela Safira, CEO of Zeera, a workplace mental health platform. “Reading Burn Rate has motivated me, to this day, to pay attention to my own signs of burnout and mental health decline; and it has compelled me to actually make a change when I notice those signs.”
